WINKWORTH ARBORETUM & CLAREMONT LANDSCAPE GARDEN

As the season moves from summer to autumn, there’s lots to look forward to at two distinct National Trust outdoor properties and a unique fourteenth century cottage in Surrey.

Autumn colour at Winkworth Arboretum: midSept – mid-Nov

It’s during the autumn season that Dr Wilfrid Fox’s vision of ‘painting the landscape with trees’ comes to life. As the seasons moves from summer to autumn the many trees, he planted slowly change from verdant greens to dazzling displays of colour. Hawthorns, Enkianthus, Sorbus, Stewartias and Acers light up this wooded valley with pockets of colourful fruits, leaves, and stems but the main vista must be the extended view from the meadow across the lake to take in The Bowl and Oak Bank.

Early morning autumn photography: 15 Oct, 22 Oct, 29 Oct, 5 Nov

They are opening their gates early for an opportunity to capture the arboretum’s autumn hues with morning photography sessions. Limited to just a 25 people, budding photographers and social media content creators will have exclusive access to the arboretum with a chance to work their magic on capturing the atmosphere and views of this special place.

Sarah the Spider half term trail: Saturday 19 October – Sunday 3 November

Autumn is spider season and it’s also the best time to spot them outdoors. On dewy or frosty mornings, their delicate spider webs reveal themselves, like jewels, glistening amongst the trees.

In celebration of these fascinating creatures, they’ve teamed up with children’s author, Hillary Robinson, writer of the Sarah and Spider book series. Her books have been brought to life on an autumn trail through the arboretum. Climb through a giant spider’s web and enter a world where Sarah has lost her boots and follow the trail around the arboretum to help her find them.

Fungi Fun with Sarah Shepley: 5 Oct, 24 Oct, 3 Nov, 6 Nov

Autumn is fungi season. What kind of slimy,

surprising, and spectacular fungi will you discover around Winkworth? Join our expert fungi spotter Sarah Shepley for this fun walk around the Arboretum.

Autumn at Claremont Landscape Garden: mid-Sept – mid-Nov

Embracing many of the traditions of British landscape garden design, the serpentine lake, elegant vistas, grotto and natural-looking treescapes all feature at Claremont. During the autumn, the trees slowly start to change, creating wonderful golden-brown views from across the lake and down from the top of the amphitheatre. Visit for morning walks with the dog, meet-ups with friends and family or join a guided walk.

Enchanted Claremont half term trail: Saturday 19 October to Sunday 3 November

Grab your broomstick and join Claremont’s Wandering Witch and her merry band of goblins, pixies and other magickal creatures for an adventure packed family trail around the garden this October half term. Each of the magickal creatures share their favourite lesson from ‘Magick School’, which will your favourite be?

Have you visited ‘Surrey’s Hidden Gem’ The Sculpture Park?

For art lovers, collectors, sculptors, photographers and nature enthusiasts - The Sculpture Park in Churt is a hidden gem. From the gates you may not expect the treasures that lie within. Upon entering the 10-acre site, nestled in the heart of the Surrey Hills, you are transported into a magical world of water gardens, woodlands and incredible sculptures.

A folly nestles above a waterfall, a giant tarantula towers over a winding path and varied works of art create a myriad of photo opportunities throughout the park. Three lakes complement the park’s diverse landscape and are home to an abundance of water creatures and unusual sculptural features.

An eclectic mix of sculptures from national and international artists are on display for all to see, giving the talented artists a platform to

be recognised and appreciated. From up and coming local sculptors, to well established globally recognised names, artists come from far and wide to display their work in this picturesque outdoor gallery. Visitors marvel at the sheer number, size and diversity of the works, finding something for every taste, style and budget.

The Sculpture Park features sculptors that bring in admirers year after year. Ruth Moilliet’s colourful tributes to nature, flowers and insects, James Doran-Webb’s driftwood animals in frozen, animated poses and Jonathan Loxley’s tactile stone creations all continue to gain admiration. New work arrives almost weekly, meaning there is always something new to discover. Sculptures have been created using every subject, material and style available and are displayed upon the water, amongst the bushes and high in the trees.

Biggie Chikodzai, resident Zimbabwean sculptor, brings the largest UK exhibition of Shona sculpture to The Sculpture Park, which can be enjoyed and purchased throughout the year. This also helps to support the artists back in Africa.

Shona sculpture is the name given to a modern movement of stone carved sculpture created in Zimbabwe. It gets its name from the ‘Shona’ tribe of people who are the largest in Zimbabwe. The country itself gets its name thanks to the Shona people’s long artisan tradition of stone working.

Nearly all sculptures throughout The Sculpture Park and indoor gallery are available to purchase. Advice on choice, installation and delivery can be given by expert staff. So keep your eye out for the sculpture that sings to you and you could have it in your own garden by the very next day!

The park is a family business, founded in 2001 by local businessman Eddie Powell. At the time of purchase it was undeveloped land that Eddie and his team set about the mammoth task of landscaping. It now welcomes well over 30,000 visitors a year, visiting from all corners of the globe. It is open every day, all year round (sometimes even Christmas Day!) and is worth seeing at any time of year as the landscape evolves with the seasons.

Saatchi Gallery Presents

The Landscape, Reimagined

Until 20 September 2024

BEERS London returns to Saatchi Gallery with The Landscape, Reimagined, a group exhibition including eight internationally based emerging and mid-career artists who reinterpret the conventions of landscape painting as radical and contemporary.

The landscape is among the most traditional of subject matter. For British audiences, artists like Turner, Constable, and Gainsborough are synonymous with a history of landscape painting. But in recent years, the painted landscape has been reinvigorated with fresh styles that push the limits of this timeless tradition.

The eight artists here are interested in pushing the boundaries of landscape through technique, interpretation, or even utilizing representational

modes that toy with digital and analogue modules. These contemporary landscape painters embrace both crude, abstract tendencies and forwardthinking new formats. Whether utilising digital image-mapping techniques (Quiñonez) or a wildly unconventional colour palette (Bader), these artists bring a topsy-turvy, and wholly unexpected approach to landscape painting. From the dreamlike textures of (British, Australia-based) Ross Taylor or the impasto, reductive technique of (Canadian, USbased) Caroline Larsen, these works resituate the landscape within a contemporary art context.

EXHIBITING ARTISTS:

Raffael Bader

Ksenia Dermenzhi

Jan Sebastian Koch

Caroline Larsen

Gavin Lynch

Myrna Quiñonez

Karen Seapker

Ross Taylor

SCULPTURE IN THE CITY

Sculpture in the City, the annual public art exhibition set amidst the iconic architecture of the City of London, comprises 17 artworks, including ten new sculptures, as well as five works retained from previous editions, and two permanent acquisitions.

Featuring an eclectic mix of sculptures from established and emerging artists, the 13th edition continues the tradition of transforming the City’s public spaces into a vibrant open-air gallery.

This year’s new sculptures include the interactive work Kissing Gate by Maya Rose Edwards, situated in Aldgate Square, which playfully brings a rural kissing gate into the urban landscape, prompting romantic encounters between passersby. At Mitre Square, CAUCUS by Samuel Ross invites public engagement with the sculpture, prompting familiar gestures like sitting, standing, and leaning.

Four new works unveiled in September by Julian Opie, Charles, Jiwon, Nethaneel, and Elena, at 100 Bishopsgate, capture a diverse group of faces through strict vertical symmetry, combining elements of traditional portraiture, modern face recognition, and public monuments.

At The Leadenhall Building, Hilary Jack’s Deluge invites reflection on the climate crisis with two LED text strips resembling a scrolling newsreel, one of them displaying contemporary flood data and the other narrating ancient flood myths.

Transforming a gilded paper bag to architectural

scale, Temple by Richard Mackness evokes both the mundane of everyday commerce and the sacredness of a shrine from its location on the corner of 99 Bishopsgate and Wormwood Street. Permanent acquisitions include Oliver Bragg’s work, In Loving Memory, featuring engraved brass plaques situated on existing benches around the City of London commemorating fictional or abstract ideas with a mix of optimism, humour, and reflection. On show in a pedestrianised space outside 70 St Mary Axe, Elisa Artesero’s The Garden of Floating Words is a neon poem that appears to be floating in the darkness from within the foliage of a garden.

In addition to the artworks on display, Sculpture in the City offers a free activation programme throughout the summer to March 2025, with a diverse range of events including Muamba Movement, Little Art Critics TV workshops for children, Art on the Skyline: Cocktail & Create workshops, exhibition tours, a BSL guided tour, talks and student takeovers.

GREENS ARE NOW OPEN AT ROYAL WINDSOR

Renowned chef Bradley Green has made a remarkable return to the culinary scene with the grand opening of the new Green’s in Windsor on Peascod Street. Known for his original group of restaurants, also called Green’s, Bradley quickly earned a stellar reputation in the culinary world. His restaurants traded phenomenally well, garnering 16 prestigious awards. However, in 2020, Bradley made the bold decision to sell Green’s to pursue a new venture.

With the proceeds, he invested in a five-star hotel and restaurant on the picturesque south coast, which now boasts two AA Rosettes. This establishment underwent extensive renovation under Bradley’s meticulous eye, resulting in a stunning venue that seamlessly blends luxury and comfort with an exceptional dining experience.

Despite the success of his south coast project, there remained a persistent demand for the return of Green’s, especially near their biggest site in Bracknell. Fans eagerly awaited the revival of their favorite dining spot, and the anticipation grew as Bradley hinted at a new chapter for Green’s. Last week, the new Green’s in Windsor officially opened its doors, marking a significant milestone for both Bradley and the local dining scene.

Located in the heart of Windsor, this new establishment promises to deliver the same

INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS GUIDE

SEPTEMBER 2024

THE FINEST SCHOOLS IN THE UK

Empowering Young Women at Notre Dame School

Academically, socially and emotionally, girls educated at all-girls’ schools are excelling.

The ethos of our progressive foundress, St Jeanne de Lestonnac, who wanted girls to make a positive difference in the world, is the beating heart of our school. All our girls are encouraged and prepared to unleash their full potential and to go out confidently into the world.

Research reveals that girls in GSA (Girls’ School Association) schools possess higher mental toughness than girls in maintained and independent coeducational schools. They have greater commitment, greater control (particularly emotional control) and greater confidence.

Being at an all-girls’ school is empowering, both pastorally and academically. Notre Dame enables learning without limits, and we believe all ambitions are valid, encouraging every student to be the agents of their own future. We are laser-focused on academic excellence, which we balance with award winning pastoral care. We have been educating young women for more than 400 years and put simply, we know that an all-girls’ educational environment works.

The GSA report highlights that higher attainment continues to be seen at all-girls’ schools, compared with co-ed schools. The gap between girls in girls’ school and girls in co-ed schools is widening for most subjects. Additionally, girls in girls’ schools are more likely to take STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics)

subjects. They are more than twice as likely to take further maths, physics and computer science A-levels.

We believe in the power of hands-on learning, and that’s why STEM plays a central role in our curriculum and co-curriculum.

Beyond the classroom, we offer an extensive enrichment programme which includes our Prep STEAM and Science Club, providing opportunities for students to delve deeper into scientific concepts through interactive projects and experiments. This lays the foundations for a continuous passion for STEM in the senior school, where we offer extensive co-curricular opportunities. Numerous weekly clubs enrich and broaden STEM learning outside the classroom: from engineering to maths, chemistry, textiles, robotics and astronomy!

Mathematical fluency is equally developed, and we encourage students to maintain a ‘can do’ attitude towards maths, teaching them that mistakes are part of the learning process. We teach our students to become experts at problemsolving, encouraging innovative thinking and curiosity, preparing students for university and high-demand careers.

To give our students the best possible opportunities, in October 2024, we will unveil our new, multi-million-pound Innovation Space. This state-of-the-art facility will provide students with access to the latest technology, integrating it into their everyday learning.

If you are considering an all-girls setting for your daughter, our Admissions Team would be delighted to speak to you and support you through the admissions process. We run Open Days or Private Tours throughout the year.

PRIVATELY EDUCATED PEOPLE DOMINATE TOP BRITISH JOBS

The study, by the Sutton Trust education charity, shows that virtually every key profession is dominated by privately educated pupils grabbing the senior management/director positions

Their grip on power is most noticeable in the judiciary, where 74 per cent of leading judges (those in the High Court or Court of Appeal) were privately educated.

Figures in the report also show that one in three MPs (32 per cent) was privately educated – as were half the members of the Conservative Cabinet. Even in Jeremy Corbyn’s Shadow Cabinet, 13 per cent of members went to private school. Nationally, the figure is just 7 per cent.

The report, carried out by Dr Philip Kirby, goes on to show that 71 per cent of senior Army officers – two-star generals and above – went to private schools. Only 12 per cent attended comprehensives.

“The

higher echelons of journalism are also dominated by the private sector, with 51 per cent educated in independent schools”

In medicine, 61 per cent of doctors were privately educated while 22 per cent went to selective state grammar schools and just 16 per cent to comprehensives. The list goes on – 48 per cent of civil servants were educated privately, 29 per cent went to selective grammar schools and 23 per cent to comprehensives.

The higher echelons of journalism are also dominated by the private sector, with 51 per cent educated in independent schools. And of those chief executives of FTSE 100 companies who were educated in the UK, 34 per cent were privately educated.

Nearly half the top actors – 42 per cent of Bafta Award winners – went to private schools, fuelling criticism that the profession is becoming more elitist.

“Our research shows that your chances of reaching the top in so many areas of British life are so much better if you went to an independent school,” said Sir Peter Lampl, the chairman of the Sutton Trust. “As well as academic achievement, an independent education tends to develop the essential skills such as confidence, articulacy and teamwork, which are vital to career success.

MEET THE HEAD

Mrs Samantha Price is Head of Cranleigh School in Surrey, having joined in September after a successful decade as Head of Benenden School. She shares with us her philosophy for education, nurturing teenagers and preparing young people for the world.

I have been privileged to work with teenagers for over twenty years and boarding education is my passion. Teaching is so rewarding because it underpins the whole of society, a springboard for children that affects the rest of their lives. I boarded myself at Malvern Girls’ College and absolutely loved it. Malvern was a school where every child is known, similar to Cranleigh, it’s one of the things that drew me to my new role because being seen and understood is so important to young people. Adolescent years are challenging so schools have a vital role to play in nurturing and strengthening their pupils, building confidence and self-esteem.

We want children to reach their potential and Cranleigh has a strong track record of helping its pupils to exceed their expectations academically. We are not a narrowly selective school yet we produce outstanding results, prioritising a love of learning confirmed by the number of leavers who join top universities.

It’s important that children are future ready and that we prepare them for real life, work as well as university. We won’t know what jobs will exist in 2030 but we can still prepare pupils for the future. Everyone needs great technical and digital skills and it’s a school’s responsibility to ensure they leave with those, as well as transferable skills such as effective communication; ethical leadership; collaboration; understanding different personalities and getting the best from people. These are skills

that a boarding environment really nurtures and we want our pupils to grow into themselves through developing agile, flexible and hardworking mindsets.

Cranleigh is a genuine co-educational school with a fantastic co-curricular programme. The skills we want to nurture are built on the stage, on the pitch, in the art studios and orchestra pits, in the House challenges. Also through charity events and partnerships, developing a sense of responsibility for the community. Our international schools, with exchanges and collaborative projects help to foster a global outlook. All these activities help to build confidence, increase skills and strengthen resilience. Cranleigh has a genuinely warm heart and a vibrant culture giving young people the best all round educational experience and I am really looking forward to driving the school through the next stage of its 160-year history.

Opening the door to your child’s future

A guide to School Open Days

As we approach the new term, it is now when thoughts turn to Independent School Open Days - allowing you to get a genuine feel for the school and whether on first impressions it is right for your child.

TOP TIPS FOR GETTING THE MOST OUT OF A SCHOOL OPEN DAY…

• Check on the school website if you need to make an appointment prior to visiting

• It is vital that you are prepared so read their school brochures thoroughly

• Take your child with you – their opinion is the most important. Children will get an idea whether they feel comfortable there.

• Talk to as many people as you can: pupils, teachers and the headmaster ideally

• Take an independent walk around with your child and chat about any reservations you might both have.

QUESTIONS TO ASK AT A SCHOOL OPEN DAY….

Some questions will differ according to your child’s age and whether you are visiting a day or boarding school.

• How selective is the school academically and what is the current pass rate for the common entrance exam?

• Are there high expectations and high academic achievements?

• Is the curriculum broad and well balanced? (you want your child to be successful but not too

“Take your child with you – their opinion is the most important”

compelled in pressure)

• What are the classroom sizes?

• What is expected of my child with regard to homework?

• Is there a healthy balance of fun and academia?

• Is there a bullying policy?

• What lunchtime meals are available?

• What sports and music facilities are available?

• What after school clubs and trips are available?

• How many pupils branch out into further education?

After the tour, you may have the opportunity to meet other parents and children on a more informal footing whereby the teachers and the head can answer queries over coffee and biscuits.

What happens if you think you have gynaecological cancer?

If you think you may have gynaecological cancer, a million thoughts could be racing through your head. Something that can help calm your nerves is getting the right information about what happens if you’re referred by your GP for further tests and investigations for gynaecological cancer.

What are the chances I have gynaecological cancer?

Noticing something that’s different or unusual to you and your body can be a worrying time. But if you think you may have one or more of the signs and symptoms of gynaecological cancer, it’s important to speak to a doctor as soon as possible. 1 in 20 women referred to a specialist by their GP will have cancer, meaning that 19 in 20 won’t, and that their symptoms can be attributed to

something else. If you do have cancer, the earlier it’s detected, often the better your chances of successful treatment.

When should I see my GP?

If you notice anything that’s out of the ordinary to you, or that concerns you, make an appointment to speak to your GP.

Examples include:

• Unusual vaginal bleeding

• Vaginal bleeding after the menopause

• Pain or discomfort in your lower abdomen or back

• A general feeling of being uncomfortable in your lower abdomen

• Abdominal swelling and bloating that doesn’t go away

• Frequent urine infections

“1 in 20 women referred to a specialist by their GP will have cancer, meaning that 19 in 20 won’t”

• An increased frequency or urgency in urination

• Sharp stabbing pains in your vagina

• Pain or bleeding during or after sex

Your GP will talk through your symptoms and how long they might have been going on for. So it’s helpful to have some notes with you that include what type of symptoms you’ve been experiencing, when they occur, and for how long.

Never feel like you’re being a nuisance or that you’re being “over the top”. It’s always best to get anything unusual checked out.

What tests do I need to get a diagnosis?

If your GP thinks that your symptoms require further investigation, they will refer you to a specialist, usually in a hospital or clinic setting.

Your specialist will arrange the appropriate examinations and investigations, depending on your symptoms. This will usually include various blood tests and possibly a variety of different scans including:

• A cervical biopsy. This is slightly more uncomfortable than a smear test, but can still be performed in doctors office, with pain relief provided.

• An ultrasound. This would be done to look at an abnormalities and potentially the best place to take a biopsy of the womb lining.

• Hysteroscopy. This is where a long, thin surgical telescope is passed into the womb through the vagina and cervix. This allows your medical team to gain a better understanding of what may be causing your symptoms.

An ultrasound scan isn’t always sufficient for detecting whether changes are benign (noncancerous) or not. Therefore, you may also be sent for an MRI or a CT scan (or both).

All of these tests and investigations are very effective at excluding or confirming the presence of cancer.

What happens after my tests and investigations?

After you’ve had all of the necessary examinations, a multidisciplinary team of doctors and other experts will meet to discuss your results. If your medical team rules out cancer, you may then be referred to a different specialist to investigate further or arrange treatment for a different condition.

If they find the presence of cancer, they will then discuss the results with you, including the grading and staging of a tumour or pre-cancerous cells and what treatment options you have.

Lots of people are involved in the process, from behind the scenes pathologists and scanning experts who will look at your bloods, biopsies and scan results, to surgeons, oncologist and nursing teams, and all will help to provide you with the information you need to make informed decisions about your treatment.

Once they’ve decided on the best way to progress, they will talk to you about your options, what your treatment may involve and to offer you support in all areas of your cancer journey.

A Touch of Glass

As we move further into 2024, glass remains a pivotal material in interior design, celebrated for its delicate nature and timeless appeal. Brands like Brokis, Gallotti & Radice, Fiam Italia, and Glas Italia are leading the charge, each offering distinct interpretations that range from minimalist to avant-garde. Whether through the sculptural forms of dining tables, the low-lines of coffee tables, or the poetic luminosity of lighting, these brands are showcasing that glass as a material is the crystal clear-choice for contemporary living spaces. Glass is here to stay, and it is more innovative and elegant than ever. Enjoy this transparent list of the greatest in Glass and where to start building with one of natures most delicate materials.

DINING TABLES:

Gallotti & Radice perfects the art of large-scale minimalism with their dining tables utilising clean, sleek lines. The use of clear and smoked glass in the Platium table creates a sophisticated, almost ethereal appearance. The combination of glass with metal accents, particularly in gold or brass finishes, adds warm classic luxury to the otherwise modern designs. If you’re looking to go a step further and Fiam Italia’s Ragno dining table is a veritable masterpiece of glasswork. Almost as if it were carved from a singular block of marble and the table was found within.

COFFEE TABLES:

Glas Italia’s coffee tables are a celebration of playful geometry, featuring bold shapes and unexpected angles. This year, the focus is on transparency and colour contrast, with many designs incorporating clear and tinted glass in striking combinations. This is emphasised perfectly in the Shimmer coffee table. Alternatively, Fiam Italia continues to explore organic, flowing shapes in their coffee tables, which are often inspired by natural elements. The brand’s use of curved glass creates soft, uniquely stunning forms that add a sense of movement to living spaces. The Atlas coffee table is a prime example of this with a singular linear curve running through the surface that smoothens your space.

LIGHTING:

Brokis remains at the forefront of lighting design with their poetic, hand-blown glass lights that blend artisanal craftsmanship with the efficiency of modern technology. Their lighting collections focus on organic shapes and natural materials. There is a noticeable trend toward using opal glass, which diffuses light softly, creating a warm, inviting ambiance with pieces such as the Geomteric collection, that utilises beautiful shapes and unique patterns to match the inviting glow of the light itself. While they traditional work with glass, they recently have begun the integration of wood with

their pieces to further display their ability mix the delicate and the durable, this can be seen in the new wooden version of their flagship “Muffins Lamp” a beautiful collaboration between two materials synonymous with luxury interiors.

If you would like to see one of the largest collections of Brokis in the UK then a quick visit to second floor of the Chaplins Furniture showroom in Northwest London would prove to be an enlightening experience. From the latest luminary solutions to stalwarts of the Brokis catalogue that provided them a platform to build their prestige in the glasswork world. You’re likely to see some stunning pieces from the other brands mentioned in this article along the way with 180+ iconic and innovative brands available. chaplins.co.uk

PAINT IT BLACK

Lick & M·A·C introduce limited-edition paint

In a world first, Lick and M·A·C have teamed up to create a limited-edition matt paint ‘M·A·C BLACK 40’ in a rich, jet black with only black undertones.

The collaboration highlights the versatility of black in both beauty and interiors, showcasing how M·A·C black 40 is the one colour that fits all.

Available only on Lick.com and in-store for a limited time only.

Lick and M·A·C have come together in a bold new collaboration to announce the launch of M·A·C Black 40 - a limited edition paint which celebrates black as the ultimate colour for selfexpression.

For 40 years, M·A·C has empowered people to express themselves through makeup and colour, now they have joined forces with Lick to reframe an historically daunting colour in both beauty and interiors as inspiring and accessible. M·A·C Black 40 is a rich, matt jet black which is versatile and

“Lick and M·A·C have come together in a bold new collaboration to announce the launch of M·A·C Black 40 - a limited edition paint which celebrates black as the ultimate colour for self-expression”

timeless - the one colour that fits all.

“M·A·C black 40 is the colour that everyone can have in their homes. It’s truly versatile: it adds dimension and contrast to any room, and will effortlessly accent your furniture and decor, whatever your style.” - Tash Bradley, Director of Interior Design and Colour Psychologist at Lick

Black is widely regarded as the colour of rebelliousness and nonconformity, and is commonly associated with words such as ‘brave’, ‘bold’ and ‘daring’; this collaboration challenges this sentiment by highlighting four different ways to decorate with M·A·C Black 40:

Colour drenching: “Colour drenching with black will help to create a very calm environment. If you have a small, north-facing room, this is a great option as black will absorb the shadows, blue the edges of the space and add heaps of personality.”

50/50 decorating: “This monochrome effect will help to trick the eye and open up your space, especially if you use black on the bottom 50% of the room and a light neutral on the top 50%. The key thing to remember is to ensure everything in that lower 50% should also be black, including radiators and skirting boards.”

Artistic pattern: “Black pairs with every other colour, so you can have a bit of fun with it. Pattern play helps to open up a room and vertical stripes will elongate your space. Whatever your style, black is a truly versatile colour with lots of potential for creativity.”

Accent colour: “Every room can benefit from an accent of black to bring contrast and depth. The best way to do this is to use black to accentuate a feature, such as a staircase or fireplace, to draw your attention to the architectural highlights of your home.”

Tash Bradley, Director of Interior Design and Colour Psychologist at Lick said: “I’ve always been fascinated by the unique role black plays in our lives. In fashion, it represents elegance and sophistication, however, in the world of interiors, many view black as a colour that requires a level of bravery and boldness to decorate with. We are challenging that perception, showing that M·A·C Black 40 is the colour that everyone can have in their homes. This rich, matt hue absorbs all natural light, so if you’ve got a room that lacks sunlight, such as a bedroom or small space, lean into that by colour drenching your space to create a calming

“Every room can benefit from an accent of black to bring contrast and depth. The best way to do this is to use black to accentuate a feature, such as a staircase or fireplace, to draw your attention to the architectural highlights of your home”

and cocooning effect.”

Developed through Lick’s industry-leading formulation process, M·A·C Black 40 has unrivalled depth of colour and is made with the highest-quality pigments. This limited edition hue is inspired by M·A·C’s iconic branding and the new M·A·Cximal Silky Matte Lipstick in the shade Caviar.

Dom Skinner, Director of Make-up Artistry at M·A·C said: “Celebrating M·A·C’s 40th year with Lick has been an honour, as black is at the heart of M·A·C’s DNA. What has been the most exciting part of this collaboration with Lick has been exploring the versatility of black. Showing how it can be harnessed in multiple ways from fierce rebellion to clean minimalist, from a simple sheer sweep to dynamic overdrawn intensity, black can go from cool to chic and proves why it’s a must for any trendsetter.”

Whether used as a dominant colour on your walls or as an accent colour on your woodwork, M·A·C Black 40 is the perfect choice for creating bold and timeless spaces. This elegant and empowering black pairs seamlessly with Lick White 02 for a high-contrast monochromatic look or Lick White 05 for a softer, neutral scheme. M·A·C Black 40 is the new go-to for interiors lovers and beauty enthusiasts alike to celebrate and elevate their style identity.

For minimalists and maximalists alike, M·A·C Black 40 is the one colour that fits all. lick.com/uk

FLORAL FANCY

From the soothing embrace of a wildflower meadow to the enchanting radiance of a rare flower, our handcurated collection of floral favourites captures the essence of a season and the comfort of a feeling.

Our Garden Collection brings the outdoors indoors with four exclusively designed beds, each showcasing fresh florals and available with or without accompanying soft furnishings.

Windsor Garden Floral Bed: Enjoy an elegant damask-like pattern of roses, lilies and cornflowers together with ornate scrolls. Complete the set with a matching ottoman and bedroom cushions.

Pavilion Garden Stripe Bed: A wide-weave stripe of calming sage green and romantic petal pink brings summer garden party colours into your bedroom: think rose petals, mint leaves, cucumber, and strawberries. The stripes colours within this bed perfectly complement the Windsor Garden collection to create a contemporary pattern matching experience.

Tumbling Roses Linen Bed: This linen blend depicts cascading roses in shades of sage and jade, the colour tones likened to the leaves of the Lamb’s Ear plant. A pale sage velvet piping

perfectly complements the colour tones in the biophilic upholstery.

Tournier Garden Bed: This floral linen depicts bunches of spring flowers in bright, uplifting tones of ivory and green. Dream of lazy summer afternoon walks in green fields, awash with summer life and corsage-like blooms. Pick out the subtle pops of colour with cushions and bedspreads for a more maximalist aesthetic.

“Florals and their accompanying tones are the epitome of femininity – the ground on which French Bedroom was built upon. When designing each piece of the Garden Collection, my product team and I wanted to perfectly capture the beauty of nature, while carefully considering how each piece would age timelessly within the home – gone is the misconception that florals will age a space.”

– Georgia Metcalfe, Founder & Creative Director, French Bedroom.

Lisa Kendall Creative Interiors

Interior design is about creativity, innovative ideas and fine attention to detail - listening to what the client wants and how they would like to experience spaces.

I lived abroad across India, Singapore, Australia, South Africa & France, before returning to find a small piece of heaven in the East Sussex countryside. My interiors business began when I bought a 300 year old barn in one of the oldest villages in the Chamonix valley starting a large scale renovation to create a five bedroom chalet. After this, the renovation bug had taken hold and I took on an assignment to provide design and project management for the complete restoration of the neighbouring 18th century farm buildings. The properties have since featured in design magazines and been used as locations for film, TV and photo shoots.

My remit might be to source a chalet in the Alps, renovate a Sussex Arts & Crafts house, create a homestead amongst the hills of Kwazulu Natal in South Africa, or transform a cottage on the beach in Cape Town. I relish a challenge, working on projects large and small across the world.

I work closely with my clients to establish the desired look and feel, find possibilities inherent in the property suggesting options which add to the existing structures. I strive to tune into clients tastes and influence choices, without imposing or taking over.

Like an alchemist bringing it all together, I play with colour and texture in my designs to create beautiful, unique spaces. For me, it is not about satisfying fashionable trends or fads, but to bring each property I work with to life. Working from my garden studio in the beautiful Sussex countryside, I am inspired by my travels across continents that feed my soul and ensure a steady stream of inspiration.

If you are looking for a creative who understands the power of colour in successful interior design, who can transform mundane spaces, please get in touch either via my website Lisakendallcreativeinteriors.com or my Instagram lisakendallcreativeinteriors.

The collection of homes are situated on Broad Oaks Estate, in company with listed buildings such as the Mansion House and Coach House dating back to 1876, all set in a designed Victorian garden. As you approach Highfields, the treelined Parvis Road provides the community with a distinctly rural feel. The landscaping of the development itself has been designed to promote a tranquil environment to relax and socialise in, along with providing wild flower gardens and private allotments for community gardening and vegetable growing. Featuring two south facing gardens, securely enclosed by the development buildings, the beautiful landscaping creates a meaningful space for homeowners to overlook and enjoy spending time in.

Only a 9 minute walk to West Byfleet station and with a forecourt of plenty of car parking, you can feel connected with a range of travel options on your doorstep. A handy guest suite will be available for private booking by family and friends. Visitors can enjoy the shared facilities and be given

peace of mind that festivities and catch ups do not need to be cut short.

With respect to the history of the site, references to the existing buildings and gardens will be reflected within the landscape design. Original landscape features and planting will be restored where possible, to ensure that new elements are in keeping with the existing character of the building and its setting.
