Albury Vineyard Awarded with Surrey Hills Trade Mark

A

lbury Organic Vineyard was one of 9 outstanding Surrey businesses to be awarded the Trade Mark Surrey Hills on 11th May at Surrey’s Rural Economy Conference. Vineyard owner Nick Wenman received the Award from the Rt Hon Michael Gove MP, Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. The award celebrates those businesses of high quality that are shining examples in Surrey who use local products and reflect and support the distinct and special nature of the Surrey Hills and the local environment. The Trade Mark Surrey Hills is a new accreditation and a Mark of local provenance and quality designed to promote the very best of what Surrey has to offer and to support those businesses who share the values of supporting the local environment. Environment Secretary Michael Gove said: “We are continuing to see the rural British economy go from strength to strength, with food and drink exports soaring, farm incomes increasing and rural enterprises thriving. The Surrey Hills Trade Mark awards play an important role in celebrating the high quality products and services the area is renowned for, and the winners all deserve our congratulations.” “I was delighted to accept the Trade Mark from Surrey Hills Enterprises. We have a passion for producing English wine of the highest quality from grapes grown organically here in the beautiful Surrey Hills, and it’s lovely to be recognised for our commitment to this” says Nick Wenman, vineyard owner. Albury Vineyard produces still and sparkling organic wines of the highest quality. The vineyard was planted in 2009 by owner Nick Wenman and comprises 21,000 vines spanning 12 acres across the North Downs. Nick believes that key to the success of the wines is the vineyard’s commitment to organic and biodynamic principles, and Albury 14 JUNE 2018

is one of only a handful of organic vineyards in England. Demand is soaring for Albury wines with many restaurants both in the local area and further afield now featuring them on their wines lists. The Trade Mark award coincides with the release of Albury’s Silent Pool Rosé 2017, the latest vintage of their flagship wine which was served on the Royal Barge to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012. Only 4000 bottles were made from the 2016 harvest and they are expected to sell out within a few months of release. “Kerry and Tilly travel the world gaining inspiration for each original collection, and their eyes are open both to the more obvious sources and the less so”

Fuelling the imagination The brilliant metal artwork of Kerry and Tilly Whittle

A

ccording to Lucy Quinnell, who is the owner of Fire & Iron Gallery in Leatherhead, husband and wife team Kerry and Tilly Whittle are “on fire”. “Just when I think that they cannot possibly come up with anything new, they blow me away with innovative shapes, colours, patterns and textures.” Kerry and Tilly travel the world gaining inspiration for each original collection, and their eyes are open both to the more obvious sources and the less so – Gaudi’s astonishing Sagrada Familia in Barcelona was the stimulus for one recent body of work, but graffiti in Chile and even a bustling international airport have also triggered fresh ideas and stunning new pieces. Floral themes appeal to Tilly, who originally studied horticulture, and her lively flower panels are hugely popular; some of her more abstract wall art conceals her source material more cunningly – who would guess that such striking patterns are inspired by part of an old river map or somebody’s route to work? Lucy has worked with the Whittles for sixteen 16 JUNE 2018

years now, and she describes the relationship with great enthusiasm: “There is a terrific sense of life and joy about this couple, and it is reflected in their art. They love what they do, and they are burning to do more and more. In all these years, they have never lost their infectious desire to experiment – to get into the workshop early in the morning and play. Their absolute commitment to trying out new ideas and ground-breaking techniques translates into a vibrancy and sense of invention in each unique creation.” Kerry and Tilly work predominantly with steel and bronze, using the experience gained from years of technical training and teaching to build strong pieces that incorporate numerous metalworking processes. In addition to the striking silvery-graphite tones of steel, petrol-like deep blue and burgundy colours are achieved through heat patination, and a warm, rich gold is attributable to the bronze. Bronze is an alloy of copper and tin, and the way in which the Whittles apply it to the steel artworks brings out to great effect the salmon-pink tones of the copper within the overall yellowness of the bronze. More recent collections have featured bright reds, blues and greens, as well as black, as the artists have developed extra colour possibilities. Fire & Iron always has a wide selection of Kerry and Tilly’s work on display, and the Whittles have also collaborated frequently with Lucy to achieve one-off commissioned artworks. Lucy explains: “We have worked together locally and internationally, in public and private properties – the biggest piece was a long horizontal triptych for a palace in Qatar.”

HOW GEMMED UP ARE YOU ON YOUR JEWELS? Best in class jewels and gemstomes in demand and prices soaring at auction

M

eteoric price rises for top-quality antique jewellery and gemstones mean tens of thousands of Britons may be sitting on valuable family heirlooms without knowing their true value. Coloured diamonds, sapphires, rubies and emeralds, as well as fine pieces of jewellery from key eras like the 1920s and 1930s, have enjoyed unbroken price rises over the past decade, according to industry experts.

Analysing lots sold at auction, Bonhams is reporting excellent prices now being achieved at auction versus a decade ago. These include a 970 per cent price increase for sapphires; a 1,100 per cent increase for rubies and a 1,900 per cent price increase for emeralds. Prices for Art Deco (1920s and 1930s) and Belle Époque (1890 to 1915) jewellery have soared by a remarkable 72 per cent since 2007. Antique jewellery has risen by 54 per cent and jewellery from the post war era (1945-1975) has risen by 89 per cent during the same period according to data released by Art Market Research. Such rises mean many owners may be sitting on jewellery they rarely wear or may have inherited that is worth far more than they realise. Jacqueline Adams, jewellery specialist for Bonhams for Surrey and Berkshire (pictured top left), said: “Investors are rapidly recognising the opportunities of collecting jewellery and, in the process, driving up prices of an already limited commodity. “As a result, we are opening up our doors virtually through our Bonhams Jewellery in June campaign and will also be conducting a series of valuations in Surrey and Berkshire and the surrounding area in the next two months. We would love to see what gems and pieces of jewellery people have tucked away in their jewellery boxes and in safe deposit boxes. Now is a great time to get an up-to-date valuation, especially for those who don’t realise the value of the pieces they own.” According to newly released data from the Knight Frank Luxury Investment Index, which tracks the price growth of 10 luxury investment sectors over the past 12 months, jewellery is a consistently strong performer. The research shows that jewellery as an alternative asset class increased by 138 per cent in the last 10 years.

What’s hot The greatest price gains are being seen with fancy coloured diamonds, exceptional colourless diamonds, Burmese rubies, Colombian emeralds, 18 JUNE 2018

The Secret to a Happy Marriage A

fter riding as a child, Rachel Hilton, a consultant nephrologist, never dreamed she’d take up the reins once again. Then one Christmas she and her husband Terry went to watch the showjumping at the London International Horse Show, Olympia. Terry who is a Professor of Renal Pathology at Imperial College London, was inspired by watching 61 year old jumping legend, John Whitaker. Much to Rachel’s amusement he said ‘‘I want to do that! So he researched Wimbledon Village Stables, booked a lesson, fell in love with a horse called Jazz and nagged me to join him’’. So after a 30 year break Rachel found herself back on a horse and totally hooked! Rachel had never considered owning a horse again after growing up with her own pony, “’I was worried about the trouble and expense of owning a horse compared with the convenience of riding other people’s horses but I knew Terry was keen’’. Then one day, out of the blue she received an email from the stables asking, “Have you ever dreamed about owning your own horse?’’ Within seconds she found herself replying: ‘“Yes!’’ Wimbledon Village Stables takes the stress out of horse ownership, ‘’The horses have a marvellous life and we can be as involved as we like, knowing that if we go away our horses are receiving five star care.’’ A year after buying their first horse the couple began consider a second horse. ‘’It was surprisingly hard to share a horse. We didn’t argue over Bertie but it became clear as our riding progressed that we were looking for different things in a horse’’. They took the plunge and Merlin joined the family! Having a shared interest has added another dimension to their marriage, even their holidays have turned into horsey expeditions! ‘’We talk about the horses all the time and have pictures of them everywhere on our laptops and social media’’ laughs Rachel, ‘’I definitely think the secret to a happy marriage is having a horse...EACH!’’ 20 JUNE 2018

“Our non-horsey friends think we are bonkers” smiles Rachel, “But compared with sports cars and expensive shoe collections it’s a relatively harmless addiction! Our children know we are spending their inheritance but haven’t made a fuss yet!” Juggling work and home life can be tricky for the professional pair whose high stress roles can be very demanding. Both work very hard on their non-riding days to support their equestrian lifestyle which Terry explains has become an essential way for them to unwind and de-stress: “It is also very important to maintain fitness and strength as you age and riding is a very enjoyable way to do it. Wimbledon Common and Richmond Park are two of the most beautiful places you could wish to ride, we are very lucky”. If you have been contemplating starting or returning to riding then why not consider Wimbledon Village Stables? Perhaps, like Rachel and Terry, you can enhance your life in more ways than you could imagine.

THE SILENT POOL GIN GARDEN WINS THE PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARD AT CHELSEA

I

t is the garden the public loved: A stunning water garden inspired by the award winning Silent Pool Distillery and designed by local company Neale Richards Garden Design for Chelsea Flower Show. It had already won Silver Gilt in the Space to Grow category this week but on Friday came the best news of all. The final award to be announced was the coveted People’s Choice Award for the most popular garden in each category and the garden lovers who had come to Chelsea in their droves all week were quite sure which one they wanted: The Silent Pool Gin Garden. Designer David Neale and Silent Pool Distillery director Ian McCulloch were absolutely over the moon. The distillery itself has confounded all expectations with its meteoric success and the garden has now done the same. The centrepiece of the Silent Pool Gin Garden was the infinity pool with its weathered oak decking. The whole concept was a brilliant interpretation of the distillery - its beautiful setting on the Albury Estate, huge copper stills and eyecatching teal blue bottle embossed with copper illustrations of the botanicals used in the gin. “David came to us with his ideas and captured our imagination immediately,” said Ian McCulloch, “We set out to try and capture the Surrey Hills in a bottle and he’s succeeded in recreating that same magic at Chelsea. It’s been a brilliant week with celebrities, television interviews and fantastic visitor feedback and we are utterly thrilled” The brief was to provide an inspirational and relaxing space for a London based professional

36 JUNE 2018

couple and it won approval from a throng of high profile professionals including Piers Morgan, Ed Balls, Brendan Cole from Strictly Come Dancing, Maureen Lipman, Georgia Toffolo from Made in Chelsea and the Winner of I’m a Celebrity, Philip Schofield, Charlotte Hawkins, This Morning presenter, Sarah Hewson, Sky News Presenter and Nick Knowles, TV presenter. The fat belly of the distillery’s copper still inspired the copper drinks cooler and filigree copper wall panels reflected the embossing on the gin bottles. The copper theme was topped off by a very tactile copper sculpture of a swirl of citrus peel by sculptor Giles Raynor. The planting, supplied by Van Arnhem Nursery in Godalming and Hardy’s Garden Plants included botanicals used in Silent Pool’s intricately realised gin - Angelica, Chamomile and Orris and the colours of the pool and the bottle are echoed by Mechonopsis, Iris and white Camassia. “I’m overwhelmed at winning the People’s Choice Award,” said David. “We had such good feedback from people during the show but to win against such amazing competition from the other Space to Grow gardens at Chelsea is just so exciting. A huge thank you to everyone who voted for us.” If you missed the garden at Chelsea you will be able to admire the copper panels when they go on display at the distillery in Albury. www.silentpooldistillers.com

EMBER BIG BAND, “THE AVENGERS” AND A TROMBONE LEGEND From Nick Handel

T

he Ember Big Band originated as a community band in Elmbridge. It performs regularly, sometimes promoting its own concerts, often supporting other organisations. It also holds `open rehearsals` where everyone is welcome to come along and listen over a pint or two. The line-up, 23 musicians plus three talented singers, performs in styles and tempos ranging from the Great American Songbook to swing, Latin, funk and rock. The band`s musical director is Bill Geldard, one of the UK`s best known trombonists and arrangers. Since turning pro at the age of fifteen, he has played with some of Britain`s most famous orchestras including Ted Heath`s and John Dankworth`s, toured with the likes of Frank Sinatra, Liza Minnelli and Sammy Davis Jnr. – and also played on the sound track of the first Bond film, “Dr. No”. Popping round for a cuppa at Bill`s home in Thames Ditton, I spotted a black and white picture of bunch of musicians propped up against the toaster (the photo, that is, not the musicians!) “I`ve just come across that one,” said Bill. “We were recording the music for ITV`s “The Avengers” series. There were some good players on that session – including Don Lusher and Kenny Baker.” Most of us (of a certain age) can still hum “The Avengers” theme - and I, for one, will never forget Diana Rigg delivering those karate chops in her black leather cat suits!

38 JUNE 2018

Bill said “Musicians were in their heyday in the sixties and seventies because there was so much work for live orchestras. On a good day, I could cover three jobs: a radio show in the morning, a session at Abbey Road in the afternoon – then maybe on to Television Centre for a “Parkinson” or a “Wogan”. I was in the band the night Parky got attacked by the Emu – and also the show that nearly turned ugly when a slightly `out of control` Freddie Starr upset Muhammad Ali. When rock and pop shows arrived, he recalls a certain ageist BBC executive who announced that he didn`t want to see orchestras `with bald heads and beer bellies`. “One of my mates bought a wig and kept it in his trumpet case,” he recalls. “It looked like a dead ferret – but it certainly gave us a laugh whenever he put it on.” So how did Bill come to take on The Ember Big Band? “I was happy to do it,” he says. “It may be an amateur band, but we take a professional approach to everything we do. There`s a difference between being `amateur` and `amateurish`.” The band is playing at The Walton Beer Festival on Saturday, July 7th (tickets from www. ticketsource.co.uk/waltononthamescricketclub) and preparing a gala concert for the Shooting Star Chase, a hospice charity caring for babies, children and young people with life-limiting conditions and their families. The concert is at The Hammond Theatre on Saturday, September 29th. Tickets from: www.thehammondtheatre.co.uk. GRIGOR DIMITROV, HYEON CHUNG & LUCAS POUILLE ARE CONFIRMED FOR ASPALL TENNIS CLASSIC AT THE HURLINGHAM CLUB, SW6 Tuesday 26th June – Friday 29th June 2018

I

MG has announced that Grigor Dimitrov, Hyeon Chung and Lucas Pouille have joined the line-up for this year’s Aspall Tennis Classic at the prestigious Hurlingham Club. 2018 marks the 25th anniversary of the event, which, over the years, has become one of the world’s most starstudded tennis exhibitions. The Aspall Tennis Classic brings world-class tennis and hospitality together for an unmissable summer event, kicking off the British tennis season, during the week prior to Wimbledon. World No.5 Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov first broke into the top 10 in 2014 after advancing to the Wimbledon semi-finals, having defeated defending champion Andy Murray. Dimitrov claimed the biggest title of his career at the 2017 Nitto ATP Finals, finishing the season at a career high of World No. 3. He won four of his eight ATP titles in 2017, including Brisbane, where he beat top 10 opponents Dominic Thiem, Milos Raonic and Kei Nishikori. Rising star and top 20 player South Korean Hyeon Chung began this year with the biggest win of his career, beating World No. 4 Alexander Zverev in the third round of the Australian Open. He went on to upset six-time champion Novak Djokovic to reach his first Grand Slam semi-final, becoming the youngest player to do so since Marin Cilic in 2010. This spring, Chung passed Nishikori in the ATP rankings to end the Japanese player’s seven-year reign as the No. 1 Asian player, achieving a career-high of World No. 19. This will be Chung’s first time playing at the Aspall Tennis Classic at Hurlingham. Accompanying Dimitrov and Chung is Frenchman Lucas Pouille, who turned pro in 2012 and claimed his first ATP title in 2016 at Metz. Pouille was the only player in 2017 to win titles on

During its 25 year history, some of the sport’s best players have competed at the event, including Grand Slam champions Andy Murray, Rafael Nadal, Stan Wawrinka and Marin Čilić, as well as Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Kei Nishikori. The Aspall Tennis Classic also draws many celebrity spectators; in the past, attendees have included Eleanor Tomlinson, Emilia Fox, Sol Campbell and Romeo Beckham. Set on the tranquil 42 acre grounds of The Hurlingham Club, The Aspall Tennis Classic is one of the most intimate tennis events in the social calendar, showcasing both the stars of today and alltime legends playing in a series of singles exhibition matches as they finalise their preparations ahead of Wimbledon.

NEW RACE FOR LIFE KIDS EVENT LAUNCHED IN GUILDFORD Guildford boys and girls are being invited to get muddy for a good cause - at a brand new event from Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life.

T

he city has been chosen to host Race for Life Pretty Muddy Kids for the first time at Stoke Park on Saturday 28th June. Pretty Muddy Kids is a new exciting obstacle course designed just for children - with added mud, thrills and spills. From scramble nets and space hoppers to mud chutes and muddy pools, children will face a range of fun and muddy obstacles to crawl under, clamber over and charge through. The Race for Life family of events also includes the traditional 5k and Pretty Muddy courses, which thousands of women will take part in at the same venue on Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th July. By taking part in Pretty Muddy Kids, children in Guildford can have fun with friends and help raise valuable funds to beat cancer sooner at the same time. Money raised will help Cancer Research UK scientists find new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat the disease, helping save more lives. Georgina Horne, Cancer Research UK’s Guildford Event Manager, said: “We can’t wait to bring Race for Life Pretty Muddy Kids to the city for the very first time. The obstacle course promises plenty of fun, thrills and spills and we hope children will rally their friends, family and schoolmates to sign up and make a splash for Cancer Research UK. “Race for Life events are not competitive and

JERMAIN DEFOE: GOING MEAT-FREE The footballer’s found that eating plant-based foods has helped prolong his time on the pitch. WORDS: Prudence Wade, Press Association

n the professional footballing world, most players are done before they reach their mid-30s. But not Jermain Defoe, 35, who was recalled to the national squad last year. Not only that, but Defoe even scored the first goal in his return to England football, 13 years after first joining the team. So, what’s his secret? Other than a superhuman ability to get the ball in the net, Defoe puts the longevity of his career down to one thing: His recent adoption of a plantbased diet. Why he wanted to do it Defoe is refreshingly honest about why he started exploring the options in his diet. “When you come into the later stages of your career, you always try to find anything you can do to prolong it,” he explains, showing his steely dedication to football. It was documentaries like Netflix’s What The Health that convinced Defoe to cut meat out of his diet, showing him the benefits and alternatives that were on offer. “I wanted to try something different to prolong my career, and that’s how I was inspired,” he says. In his drive to continue to play football at a top level, Defoe has now cut meat out altogether, but he still eats some fish. How he found the transition No matter how in vogue the vegan diet is, for most people, the transition is still a pretty tricky one. Even though Defoe hasn’t gone fully vegan, cutting meat out of his diet was still tough, because of the culture he grew up with. “At first it wasn’t easy,” he admits. “It’s something completely different to what I’ve done before,

66 00 JJ U UN N EE 22 00 11 88

especially coming from a West Indian background.” Defoe is close to his family, and says: “When I first started, it was difficult. I used to go to my mum’s on a Sunday and she’d make lamb, beef, all this kind of stuff.” Admittedly, Defoe has it easier than most people. He works closely with a nutritionist who helps shape his diet to make sure it’s balanced. In fact, it doesn’t seem like Defoe does that much cooking at all. “I don’t mind cooking,” he says, sounding very unconvinced. “My girlfriend does most of it, but I help her.” Now, Defoe’s diet has settled into a pretty consistent rhythm. “I try to stick to vegan meals at home, but after training at the ground, I’ll have a bit of fish, like tuna or salmon, to get some energy back into my system,” he says. And don’t worry, because his mum has also managed to adapt - he was at her house the night before we spoke, and she made him a lovely vegetable curry. How it changed his performance For Defoe, changing his diet so significantly has undoubtedly been worth it. “It wasn’t easy, but as I was doing it, I noticed the difference,” he says. “I didn’t get one muscle injury last season, and in your 30s, that’s quite unusual. “I thought it must be down to my diet - cutting meat out and really understanding what I’m actually putting into my body.” His muscles aren’t the only thing that have benefited from a meat-free lifestyle. “I’ve always had energy, but sometimes you feel a little bit lethargic and bloated,” he says. “Now I feel like I’ve got more energy. I feel completely different - I’m able to train every day, I don’t get any injuries, it’s helped with my game. That, for me, is the most important thing.” How his teammates have responded Veganism isn’t exactly seen as a macho lifestyle choice, which seems at odds with the lads-centric nature of football. However, Defoe says his teammates are really receptive to his diet. “A lot of the younger players look at me and they’re like ‘Wow, how can he still be playing at that sort of level at 35?’ I think they wanted to know what the secret is,” Defoe says. The answer he always gives them? His diet. “I think they look at me and think they should try it themselves - and they should, because the earlier you try it, the better it will be,” Defoe says. With top sportspeople like Serena Williams and David Haye adopting veganism, plant-based diets are shedding the image of being wishy-washy and unbalanced. If a 23-times Grand Slam winner can succeed without getting her protein from meat, then there’s got to be something in that.

“Now I feel like I’ve got more energy. I feel completely different - I’m able to train every day, I don’t get any injuries, it’s helped with my game. That, for me, is the most important thing”

diet has been an eye-opening one. “When I was younger, I didn’t understand much about food, I just ate what was in front of me,” he says in disbelief. “Even at the training ground I just ate like everyone else.” It was education that showed Defoe that there are so many alternatives to meat. That’s why he did a film with Quorn and Ben Fogle about how reducing your meat intake can be so much healthier and better for the environment. “It encourages kids to understand what they’re putting in their bodies,” Defoe says. “It shows you can be healthy and fit without eating meat.” For now, you won’t see Defoe reaching for grilled chicken breast to get his #gains. Instead, he’ll be opting for tofu - which will probably help power his professional career for a few extra years. Jermain Defoe has partnered with Ben Fogle and Quorn to explore how meat reduction can be healthier for you and the planet. Watch their film here.

Want to tighten your skin, reduce sagging, wrinkles and fine lines? INTRAcel has stood the test of time.

Dr Peter Forrester has been using INTRAcel skin rejuvenation for over 5 years. During this time he has witnessed the introduction of many other non-surgical skin-tightening treatments. These new treatments are usually well publicised, celebrity-endorsed and expensive. They are often promoted with ‘before & after’ photographs which are rarely achievable in practice. Dr Forrester continues to be impressed with the results of INTRAcel and believes that it offers a better and more cost-effective result than most of the newer ‘trendy’ techniques. INTRAcel cleverly combines the two established techniques of micro-needling and radio-frequency (RF) skin tightening. INTRAcel delivers short bursts of RF energy into the deeper layers of the skin.

INTRAcel can: • improve the tone & texture of skin • reduce wrinkles and fine lines • tighten the jowls and neck • improve acne scars • improve active acne Recovery from an INTRAcel treatment is usually quick. At the end of treatment the skin will be red with a sunburn-like sensation for a few hours. This redness will diminish over the first 1-2 days. A toned and tightened effect will be noticeable immediately after a treatment but the full effects will develop over subsequent weeks. Although you should notice an improvement after the first treatment, a course of 3 treatments at 4-6 week intervals may be recommended. Following this, improvements will continue to develop for up to 6 months as new, healthy collagen develops.

REVAMP YOUR KITCHEN Is a complete kitchen makeover out of the question? Lydia Tsiouva reveals some simple ways to spruce up the space.

T

hose wine-fuelled, candlelit tapas nights with your girlfriends, the smell of a roasting chicken on a Sunday afternoon, sunlight streaming in through the window as you’re washing up... No matter how big or small your kitchen is, it’s the little details and moments like these that make it your own. Admittedly, many of us have encountered a lifeless kitchen that seems beyond saving - and it’s tempting to pick up the phone and ask the professionals in for a complete makeover (until you realise, that’s really only realistic if you have thousands to spare). The good news is, it can actually be relatively easy to transform a tired kitchen - with minimal budget and effort required - and the kitchen cupboards are usually a good place to start.

Want to breathe new life into your kitchen? Here are some ideas... Paint your cupboards Giving your cabinets a new splash of colour can be a cheap and effective way of refreshing your kitchen. A simple lick of paint in an eye-catching colour instantly transforms an old-fashioned layout into a contemporary and catalogue-worthy space. This is also great for small kitchens; painting over dark mahogany cupboards will make the room appear brighter, bigger and more open. Remove cupboard doors Another great way to lighten up your kitchen, and make it feel less bulky and more modern, is to remove some of the cabinet doors and turn those spaces into into open shelves instead. Displaying your crockery not only adds personality, but it also makes them easily accessible and quicker to organise. Add glass panels If you like the light and open look, but feel removing cupboard doors entirely might not provide enough security (or keep clutter sufficiently hidden), consider replacing the door panels with glass instead. Glass manufacturer, Bendheim, suggests that refacing cabinets yourself can save up to 80% of what you would pay to replace them entirely. It’s a job you could complete in the space of a weekend, too. When the glass is cut to your desired size, lie it flat within the frame and secure the edges with silicone caulk. Once dry, the doors will be ready to screw back into place. Or chicken wire inserts This look might not be for everyone, but it adds a cute, farmhouse feel - and it’s a super-simple option. Using garden pliers, cut your chicken wire to the size you need and lay out on the back of the cupboard frame. Staple the edges of the wire to the frame all the way round - and you’re good to go! Change the cupboard knobs Though it may seem like a small detail, changing the door knobs on your kitchen cupboards can add accents of colour and personality. Small and patterned designs stand out beautifully on plain

74 JUNE 2018

white cupboards. If you’re finding it hard to match colours, why not opt for jewel knobs? This is a simple way to add a touch of elegance. Insert some shelves Is there any space space among your kitchen cabinets? Why not utilise it and install a few shelves. This is a great way to free up your worktops, providing somewhere neat and tidy to store utensils and other items - while giving you more room to prepare meals. The shelves could become a style feature in themselves - think about displaying a few carefully chosen plates or a cherished teapot, or a stack of favourite cookbooks. Liven up open cupboards with liners If you are opening up a few of the cupboards, how about going a step further and lining the backs with sheets of patterned wallpaper? So easy, and low-cost, but it could be a really effective way of transforming the space and adding personality. Make a DIY plate rack Want a better way to store your plates? Building in your own plate rack could make the storing task simpler and less stressful - and help revamp the look of the room. You’ll need some suitably-sized poplar dowels. Once you’ve measured the dimensions, drill small holes, spaced evenly, where you’ll slot the dowels in to create the rack.

Creating beautiful attic bathrooms Looking for an inventive way to make effective use of a loft conversion? An attic bathroom can transform your new room into a show-stopping area.

T

ucked away in the roof, an attic bathroom can be a quiet retreat from everyday life and, with the right finishing touches, will become a warm and welcoming place to escape to after a busy day. Make the most of your space by working with the original features: exposed beams, a sloping ceiling and extra skylights can all create a beautiful attic bathroom to relax in. Or, you can create something special from scratch, adding in your own accessories and features. Working with the natural architecture of your attic, you can choose a shower and clever storage solutions for smaller areas. Well-placed mirrors will also create the illusion of a much larger bathroom, lending a light and airy feeling, even to cramped attic spaces. Add extra features to larger rooms, such as a freestanding bath or a heated towel rack to add a luxurious touch to your new attic bathroom.

How to design a loft conversion bathroom Before starting to build a loft conversion you will need to check if you need planning permission 78 JUNE 2018

“Make the most of your space by working with the original features”

from your local planning department. However, regardless of whether or not you need planning permission a loft conversion will require Building Regulations approval. When building a loft conversion bathroom, or indeed any additional bathroom in the house, consult a specialist in bathroom loft conversations – they can give you all the expert advice - initially whether or not your boiler is capable of supplying hot water to the extra bathroom. One solution to this could be an electric shower that produces its own hot water on demand. Also, consider if you wish to have a window in your loft bathroom, and if so where. Have a clear idea of what you want for your bathroom, but be aware that you may have limitations or need to make some changes based on the layout of the room. For example, where the staircase will need to be and if there are any restrictions with plumbing. Again the experts can advise you and suggest ideas on how to achieve your loft bathroom retreat. Whether a full or part en-suite, it will provide the privacy to unwind - and of course add value to your property.

THE DETAILS Roundhouse kitchens start at £35,000. Roundhouse 5 Trinity Gate, Epsom Road, Guildford GU1 3JQ 01483 573584 www.roundhousedesign.com textured finishes, create a layered effect. As they age they acquire a natural patina, which adds to their beauty and richness.

+++Stop Press++ Direct from Milan Broken plan Broken plan designs are much in evidence. This is where the space is physically divided by for example; changes to floor levels or materials, glass partitions, partial walls, shelving, bookcases, storage or furniture. The idea is that with subtle divisions you can keep the sense of space that you get with an open plan layout but that there are areas where you can retain your own space away from the rest of the family.

Built in With the trend toward open living spaces, open plan or broken plan, lines are often blurred between living, cooking and dining areas. Built in means having furniture in the living space that echoes that of the kitchen. For example audio-visual furniture, or shelf units that are made in the same materials in the same style as your kitchen, thereby maintaining a coherent overall design.

Texture contrast Matt and high gloss lacquers are always popular but highly textured finishes like rough sawn Oak ply, deeply riven river-washed finish and beautiful bleached wood are growing more evident. As are textures used in unusual combinations, with simple hand painted matt lacquer and gorgeous natural stone worksurfaces or beautiful polished concrete that with age, acquires its own patina.

Metallics Glamorous metallic finishes include Burnished Copper and Bronze, and Hammered Silver which gives a textured look. Metal wrapped doors and panels are a continuing theme – with a move away from uniformity and a trend towards more individuality. Finishes like these are reflective and rich, with depth and texture and used with matt or gloss lacquers, beautiful book matched veneers or 80 JUNE 2018

At the influential Milan Salone di Mobile, generally, furniture was less dark but lighter, sophisticated and crafted, with the industrial luxe look more pared down.

The very latest trends emerging include; • Wood - though still lots of dark wood around it appears to be becoming blonder and beautifully finished. Often used for open storage for curated displays. • Colours - becoming softer and paler with lots of greys but also peach, pink, green. • Greenery - evident everywhere, so houseplants are perhaps having a revival. Whatever trend you pick up on, with judicious thought and planning and the help of a good designer, you can create a stunning kitchen that will last the test of time.

We love bathrooms, especially beautiful and spa-like ones where we can create our own little oasis at home. Whether you have your own bathroom retreat or are looking to create a new one, you’re just a few ideas, products, and steps away from the bathroom of your dreams

athroom design has come a long way in the last 20 years. Whilst the importance of functionality remains; many more homeowners are now spending time and money to ensure striking aesthetics within their bathroom. Designer bathrooms are a common site in many homes and such a project can add real value to the property. If you are seeking to create a modern designer bathroom look in your home then the tips below will help you achieve that goal.

A STYLISH BATH The first bathroom suite item to deal with is the bathtub. This is the piece of furniture that you will get the most enjoyment from and it is important to ensure that it provides comfort to the user. However, going for a practical model doesn’t mean that you have to sacrifice style and there is a vast range of bathroom models, from twin baths that allow two people to bathe side by side, to corner baths that serve to maximise available space. If you prefer the more traditional rectangle shaped bath, there are still options available that provide that designer feel. Going for a separate tap installation also serves to create a unique look.

THE SHOWER OPTION Whether you have enough space to install both a bathtub and a shower, or prefer to just have the latter in your bathroom; your choice of design will

82 JUNE 2018

have a huge impact on the room. Quadrant shower enclosures that fit into the corner of the room with an arc shaped glass enclosing the two sides, give an elegant finishing look to the suite. If you are planning to splurge on your bathroom and you have the space, you might like to consider a walk-in shower enclosure. Walk-ins give you greater mobility and access, and look grand as well as plenty of space to really relax and unwind. It is a good idea to have glass on as many sides of the shower enclosure as the bathroom allows. This will greatly help to increase the light in the room, which will in turn give the illusion of spaciousness.

AN APPEALING BASIN Although you probably consider the bath or shower as being the most important of furniture

in your bathroom, it is also the basin that acts as a central item in designer bathrooms. This is due to the fact that it will almost always have a mirror placed above it, which immediately draws the attention of anyone who enters the room. As such it is important to install a basin that looks fantastic. One option is to fit a vanity unit, with the basin sunk in so that it is flush with the surface. Alternatively you could add to the aesthetics by mounting the basin on top of the vanity unit and go for an unusual design, such as a funnel shaped basin. However, if you are going for an ultramodern look and want to keep furniture down to a minimum, then a vanity unit may not be the right choice for you. In such instances a hovering sink with hidden pipes is a good option. If you have a big enough bathroom and enough wall space, you could even decide to go for the double sink, which not only look great, but are also useful in a busy household.

LUXURY TOUCHES Carefully coordinate your towels with the colour of the walls and bathroom suite. Add a stylish looking towel rail electric element to heat up the towels for added luxury, which also comes with an added advantage of warming up your bathroom. Decanting your soap and shower products into matching bottles is a simple way to create a stylish look in your bathroom. Coordinate other accessories such as the toilet roll holder and toothbrush holder. Get a sleek and stylish cabinet or matching boxes to hide away less attractive products or those you don’t want to show. A wellchosen bathroom rug, a potted plant in the corner, or a framed picture hung on an empty wall; small pieces which can completely revamp the look of your suite. Strike a balance by picking just a few significant pieces of bathroom furniture which will contain a certain colour. Offset it by choosing a neutral or contrasting colour in other accessories. By ensuring that your accessories are attractive and functional, along with some good, soft lighting, you can create a calm and relaxing retreat, right inside your home.

Everything but the kitchen sink

C

hoosing a stylish sink is just as crucial as the rest of your kitchen. Even if you and your dishwasher are joined at the hip, you’ll still rely on your kitchen sink for soaking your largest baking trays, washing out your most delicate glassware and rinsing your fruit and veg. Although quality sinks can last 15 years or more, they do wear out. Finishes start to dull or chip, and annoying leaks appear mysteriously around the rim and drain. And if you’re planning a kitchen remodel, it makes sense to replace your sink and taps.

more workspace, and giving you a sleek look (but no drainer). They’re a no-no for laminate surfaces, as you won’t be able to seal the edges of the cutout. Inset or drop-in sinks are the easiest to fit, particularly if you have a wood surface - granites, slates and composites will need to be templated for the sink cut-out. The plumbing for a new sink is fairly straightforward — there’s not a lot of choice involved. But how and where the sink is attached to the countertop is a decision you’ll need to make before you order your new basin. You will be living with your new sink for a long time, so choose carefully. A well-made sink will last as long as you need it and maintain its good looks as well.

CONSIDER THESE FACTORS BEFORE BUYING: Size Matters Most people favour a one-and-a-half or two-bowl setup with a drainer, which lets you wash up and prep food simultaneously.

Materials Make sure you consider the materials before buying... Ceramic is enjoying a renaissance, being a materials with wow factor, but remember it can stain and scratch, so consider buying a sink mat for protection. Synthetic sinks are a better choice as they are more durable, reasonably inexpensive and come in a range of colours. Stone composites are even more hardwearing, and super-hygienic as they are non-porous. They also give you more choice in terms of colour and texture. Stainless-steel sinks score the most brownie points for practicality, easy maintenance and affordability, but modern designs can look out of place in a traditional setting.

Inset Or Undermounted? As the name suggests, undermounted sinks are fixed to the bottom of the worktop, freeing up 84 JUNE 2018

PERFECT PATTERNS FOR YOUR KITCHEN

M

ezzo is Original Style’s latest collection of patterned wall and floor tiles which boasts eclectic designs inspired by arts and cultures from around the globe. It has been added to the brand’s Odyssey range, sitting comfortably between the larger format Grande tiles and smaller - Primo - products. Mezzo’s new nine exclusive patterns have been designed in-house, taking inspiration from everything from traditional tiles and rugs to ancient art. These designs are anything but old fashioned – they have a modern feel with an urban edge and work well in period properties .

As well as being designed here they are also printed in our Exeter factory, in the heart of Devon. The cement-effect surface has a slightly aged, worn look. The subtle and limited colour palette of duck egg blue and grey on the warm beige base is limited so the nine designs can be combined into an elegant mélange (available as a pack of nine) as well as working beautifully as individual layouts. Mezzo glazed porcelain tiles are all 200 x 200 x 8mm, a versatile size for both large and small spaces. Suitable for residential interiors (walls and floors) they are not restricted to bathrooms and kitchens, as they look just as glamorous in living and dining areas, hallways and conservatories. www.originalstyle.com 90 JUNE 2018

T

he kitchen is your workshop in which you create meals and spend a lot of time. Prepare a space for yourself in which you will feel good and that will inspire you to compose new meals, detox, or simply cook Sunday chicken soup. The kitchen is a good place to introduce vivid colours and interesting designs - both on the walls and furniture. Especially if you have a kitchen designed in Scandinavian or minimalist style. Bold colours will add warmth, dynamics, and energy to an arrangement and delicate pastels will complete the stark space. What colours can be applied and what techniques can be used to make changes?

A world of colour Yellow, lemon, honey-coloured

Yellow is a colour that is taking the world by storm and replacing pink, which has been fashionable for several years. Generation Z considers it their favourite colour, that screams “look at me.” Yellow is bold and vivid. When you use it on a larger surface, e.g. walls, cabinet doors or kitchen countertops, the kitchen will become bright and optimistic. If you don’t want to introduce too much yellow into your kitchen, select a few elements – niche, cabinet, table, and wrap them with lemoncoloured stickers.

Ultra Violet, or violet with a touch of blue Ultra Violet is the colour of the year 2018, announced by the Pantone Institute, i.e. the global colour specialists. Violet is mysterious, mystical and spiritual. It gives the space an artistic and creative character. As it is a strong and definite colour, it is good to use on smaller spaces - a wall that is naturally illuminated, or several kitchen cabinet doors.

Oriental blue Blue is a cool, calm and attenuates colour. If vivid colours are not your favourite, choose blue, turquoise or cobalt to create a calm space in your kitchen. You can use very light shades on one of the walls to enlarge the room or use darker blue variants on kitchen furniture elements to cool a room with lots of sun. 92 JUNE 2018

Pastel pink Pink is a fresh and joyful colour, most often associated with girlishness. In rooms, it can be used as a complement to stark gray, very trendy in recent years. It also blends well with wood and the colour white. Small amounts of this colour will bring a touch of fun and sweetness to our kitchen. It’s also a good colour for those of you who are ready for delicate changes in the appearance of your kitchen and are afraid to experiment with bold colours.

Green mint Green is a soothing colour of nature – of grass, leaves, herbs, vegetables, and fruits. Bright and brisk shades, such as lime or peas, will give the kitchen an energetic and cheerful atmosphere. In turn, lighter and more subdued colours, like mint or olive, bring peace and work well on larger surfaces. Green is a safe colour for the kitchen space, it complements white colour, wooden or steel elements. It also goes well with fresh herbs kept in pots on the kitchen windowsill. www.pixers.uk

REASONS TO INVEST IN A QUALITY BATHROOM SUITE Designed and installed by experts 1 A fabulous bathroom adds value to your property Due to the relative permanence of a bathroom installation (fixing of tiles, plumbing arrangements etc), it is important to take your time and plan to achieve a quality finish. At worst, a poorly composed installation or unfashionable bathroom suite choice can put off would-be buyers, thereby reducing sale value of your property. At best, a high quality bathroom suite can improve the value of your home, potentially adding more to its overall value than you spent on the products and installation. Hence, this is one instance when it pays to spend a little extra on good quality, branding and design. 2 Better design Unless you are a bathroom expert, or experienced in renovations, replacing your bathroom suite is likely to involve replacing existing pieces, in current positions. It doesn’t necessarily have to be this way though. In some instances changing the layout of a bathroom is unnecessary, or impossible, but seeking the guidance of a specialist will help confirm that, or open your eyes to other possibilities. If an existing layout isn’t working for your family,

a bathroom design service can provide inspiring and practical solutions for using even the smallest of spaces in an attractive and efficient way. A designer will listen to your needs and provide you with concepts and visuals that provide that extra confidence when purchasing. 3 Safety Most bathroom installations include elements of electrical works (lighting, mirrored cabinets, shaver sockets, underfloor heating etc), and all include plumbing works, of course. These tasks, along with potentially complex tiling, should all be undertaken by qualified and experienced tradespeople. To correct poor workmanship at a later date can be disproportionately costly and most certainly disruptive. In the case of shoddy plumbing, leaks can cause hugely expensive damage and incorrect electrical installations can be potentially life threatening. 4 Buy cheap buy twice Cutting corners and costs initially is almost certainly not going to cut costs in the long term. It stands to reason that the cheapest bath tubs, shower trays and brassware on sale in the UK are also the least costly to produce. This often means unidentifiable branding (which leads to difficulty obtaining spare parts in years to come), poor quality china surfaces, poorly engineered valves, substandard plating and so forth. Given that labour costs in bathroom installations equal or exceed material costs, failing to invest in superior, well-functioning and durable products will only lead to repeat labour costs to repair and exchange items earlier than necessary. 5 Finishing touches shouldn’t be missed Never underestimate the impact and power of beautiful accessories such as mirrors and towel rails, the effect of a layered lighting scheme, a water softener to keep your metal and china surfaces shiny and new looking and in good working order and the final small details such as fluffy and luxurious towels. All these elements combine to finish your bathroom, giving it the style and feel of an indulgent hotel experience – a wonderful place to relax in your home. A professional bathroom expert will remind you of these finishing details, to ensure everything is considered during the bathroom creation process.

C u rtai n s Up You can instantly enhance or update a room by adding the right curtains, bringing the whole room together and creating a finished look. Deciding on the right curtains can make a dramatic difference to both the appearance and feel of a room

B

efore deciding on a particular type of curtain it’s worthwhile considering what you are trying to achieve in the room. Are you looking for practicality, a brand new style for your room or maybe a little of both? Are you trying to keep a room cosy in the evenings or shading a child’s bedroom from early morning sunshine? Deciding on your room’s requirements from the beginning will help you make the right product choice - ensuring you get the most from your window furnishing. Do you want the window dressing to be the focus of the room by injecting colour? Or do you need the solution to be more neutral so you can change your furniture without having to replace the curtains? Looking at the appearance and size of your window is a great way to decide on the most suitable type curtain.

CURTAINS ARE GREAT FOR… Decorative flair - sumptuous full-length curtains made from one of a range of luxurious fabrics adds the finishing touch to furnishing any room. Protecting upholstery - voiles and curtains act as a great way to protect soft furnishings from exposure to direct sunlight, helping minimise the risk of sun fade on delicate materials. Keeping the room warm - drawing curtains can help eliminate draughts and wasted heat, helping to reducing fuel costs and being more energy efficient. There are a variety of curtain headings to choose from, depending on the décor, theme and type of window in your home - pencil pleat curtains, tab top curtains, chrome ring top and slot top. You could also add in drapes for a more dramatic look, ideal for larger rooms.

LINED OR UNLINED? Which are best for you? Again you need to decide 102 JUNE 2018

the needs of every room and window. Lined curtains are great for: • Insulation - closed curtains help keep out draughts whilst trapping heat in the room. • Protection - lined curtains give an added level of resistance against strong sunlight that may contribute to material deterioration over time. • Hanging - lined curtains add extra wei6ght - which allows them to hang better. Unlined curtains are great for: • Low maintenance - unlined curtains can be washed at home with no need for dry cleaning. • Keeping a room cool - underlined curtains allow air to pass through easily - ideal for keeping temperatures lower in the summer. • Achieving a lighter look - unlined curtains allow more light into the room giving a lighter look that works best in smaller spaces.

CARING FOR YOUR CURTAINS Remember to remove all curtain accessories such as holdbacks and hooks before cleaning your curtains. Avoid machine washing curtains at high temperatures or for longer than necessary. Lined curtains need to be dry cleaned. Voiles should be hand washed in lukewarm water and left to drip dry.

Hello June W

& Hello Summer!

e welcome flaming June – the month for admiring the flowers, smiling the roses, enjoying BBQs, entertaining outside and hopefully also for snoozing in the garden! The oldest and arguably most beautiful garden centre in London, Clifton Nurseries London has been inspiring London gardeners since 1851 – and now Clifton Nurseries has another branch in leafy Surrey to inspire gardeners in 2018 and beyond! Only a few minutes away from M25, Junction 11, but tucked away in a peaceful location down the end of a drive behind residential houses on Woburn Hill in Addlestone, the new Surrey outlet of Clifton Nurseries is rapidly becoming one of Surrey’s best kept secrets. It’s a world of beautiful trees and shrubs, garden pots (from small to large, and even to enormous!), stylish garden furniture, outdoor cooking equipment, garden accessories ….. and more. Enhance your outdoor living area with a fire pit “Nothing adds to a summer patio party like a cosy outdoor fireplace or pit”

F

ire pits are an excellent way to enhance your outdoor living area, allowing you to extend the time you spend outside; well into the night and into the cooler months. Providing a social focus for after dinner conversation or even an early morning coffee, fire pits have evolved to suit every setting and now come in a range of styles, colours and fuels. You can choose a style that complements your outdoor décor, whether it is portable or permanent, metal or stone, wood or gas burning.

Functions: • Outdoor Fireplace: Nothing adds to a summer patio party like a cosy outdoor fireplace or pit, creating warmth and ambiance for those cooler summer evenings. • Simple Grilling: Some firepits come with a cooking grate doubling as a grill, too – great for simple outdoor cooking (e.g. sausages or kebabs) or marshmallow toasting. • Tables: Firepit tables allow family and friends to enjoy eating and drinking in the warmth of a roaring fire – outside! This feature provides a substantial rim on which to lay your drinks and food plates allowing you to entertain around a fiery centrepiece. • Decorative: Lit or unlit, firepits can simply act as an outdoor accent, like a piece of garden sculpture. Whether it’s a contemporary or rustic affair, the options are vast and dependent upon your own personal style and tastes. 108 JUNE 2018

What Type of Fuel? Firepits can use a variety of different fuels and essentially it all comes down to the brand of fire pit you want and personal choice. Here are a few key fuel facts: • Propane: Propane fed fire pits require gas bottles to feed them, so it is necessary to think about where a discreet place to locate the tank may be. It is always advisable to bury the piping under the patio, so it is best to plan ahead. • Wood and Charcoal: Depending on how big your fire pit is, you’ll need to use different sized logs and kindling. You can also combine a layer of charcoal on the base to increase your firepit’s efficiency by making log burning easier. Also, charcoal helps to produce a controlled, even heat with a smaller flame. • Natural Gas: Fire pits that run on natural gas generally need to be built-in, and connect to a natural gas line located in your home. Natural gas is significantly less expensive than other fuel options, but may cost more upfront as it must be installed by a professional. • Bio-Ethanol: A clean-burning, more environmentally friendly and efficient biofuel that emits no smoke, ash, or embers. Two major benefits are that it does not produce a smell or air pollutants. For smaller firepits you can get an ethanol based gel. The gel comes in bottles that you pour into the fire pit fuel reservoir. Like Bioethanol it does not emit smoke or odours.
