GLAMPING AT HOME FARM

If someone would have told me there is a slice of glamping countryside magic with live music just 20 minutes from London I wouldn’t have believed them, but At Home Farm have mastered just that.

Iwas lucky enough to be invited along to the At Home Farm opening night featuring live music from Vanessa Haynes, and it was just incredible. The set up was amazing, on arrival you are introduced into the farm and given a map to your glamping tent, we were also presented with a basket which included cups, plates along with some sticks and marshmallows - everything we needed for the perfect camp fire set up. The glamping tent was a short walk and wow we were so impressed, when we unzipped the tent we were presented with a full double bed with rustic Moroccan deco featuring lamps, rugs, bedside tables and even a comfy chairs - the addition of the small BBQ and seating was all just perfect for a cheeky night in the country.

After we settled into our tent we headed over to the stage area ready for the night to begin. It was full of pretty lights, great music and not to forget the smell of yummy food cooking. You are then given your tickets to collect your food, the bar is fully stocked with the whole works from cocktails, wine and local beers to purchase. We collected our food which included middle eastern chicken with dates, olives and capers all served with humous and salsa, beautifully cooked and full of flavour - but I have to admit the dessert of chocolate brownies was my ultimate favourite, they were to die for, if I could of squeezed it in I would have had another portion. After dinner we were directed by staff through the forest to the concert set up, the walk was magical something

straight out of a mid summer nights dream with twinkly lights over a little bridge, and all whilst the sun setting it really was something special. The evening show set up area has everything you need with haystacks to get comfy for the evening along with another bar. Vanessa brought the party to life with her Aretha Franklin tribute covering all of her classics and stunning vocal range. At one point in the night I looked around and felt like I was at some VIP Secret concert, lucky to be there. It was definitely one of those nights I didn’t want to end. As the night came to a close and Vanessa said one last song “ say a little prayer” the whole crowd was up dancing, laughing and singing - It really was such a fitting end to an amazing evening. As we were glamping we were lucky enough to be able to take the short walk back to our tent and enjoy a glass of wine under the stars whilst toasting some marshmallows.

Waking up the following morning I can honestly say was the best nights sleep ever, the bed is beyond comfortable and its was beautifully silent waking up surrounded by our lovely nature. It’s a small walk to the spotless showers and bathrooms and there is also a social area and kitchen with free tea, coffee and sofas etc just somewhere you can relax and spend the morning. I have no doubt in my mind we will be returning to this beautiful place and I highly recommend others getting booked up. Please check out their website for upcoming events, tickets are going fast! So, get in and get booked before the summer is officially over.

Next event is Saturday 17th August with the amazing Nick Mulvey. @homefarmlive; @homefarmglamping www.athomefarm.live

THE FOX AND HOUNDS HUNSDON CELEBRATES 20-YEAR ANNIVERSARY

Exciting birthday events include celebrity guest chefs and retro menus

The Fox and Hounds Hunsdon – the Hertfordshire pub & restaurant in the Michelin Guide, with an on-site shop, beautiful garden and covered terrace –is celebrating its 20-year anniversary in 2024.

Independently owned by James and Bianca Rix, who met at school and have raised their children in the homely pub environment, The Fox and Hounds has provided a warm and relaxing spot for two decades, offering imaginative food with rustic Italian and French influences.

During the Covid pandemic lockdown, when pubs had to temporarily close, the couple opened a pop-up shop to keep supporting the local community. The Fox Shop was such a hit that it remained a permanent fixture. The shop supports small and local businesses with products such as local gin, beer, honey, chocolate & baked goods, plus a range of Brindisa Deli nibbles, treats & store cupboard essentials, alongside a range of Fox & Hounds home cooked ready meals, bread & treats from the pub kitchen.

Chef and owner James previously worked alongside chefs Gary Rhodes and Alastair Little, before 2000, when he moved to Tom Conran’s The Cow in Notting Hill as head chef for four years before opening The Fox and Hounds. Driven by a desire to open their own restaurant outside London, James and Bianca found and lovingly restored The Fox and Hounds it to create the stylish pub & restaurant it is today.

This year will see a host of exciting special events to mark the anniversary, including:

Guest Chef Charity Takeover with Matt Tebbutt

On Thursday 3 October, top chef and Saturday Kitchen presenter Matt Tebbutt will host a ‘Tebbutt Takeover’ in the kitchen with James. The pair became firm friends after working together back at Alastair Little’s Frith Street restaurant in Soho in the 90s and together will create a special three-course menu.

They will also run a Charity Raffle, with raffle prizes from suppliers and brands, including a Brindisa Hamper, Adnams beer & Nyetimber sparkling wine; local artwork, flowers, a Fox & Hounds gift voucher and Matt Tebbutt’ new Pub Food Cookbooks, signed by the chef himself.

The fun and sociable evening will include canapés and fizz on arrival, a three-course set menu, teas and coffees, a chance to chat with Matt, and will end with the Charity Raffle.

Throughout September and October, The Fox and Hounds will be marking their 20-year anniversary with a number of mini events, promotions, offers and great specials, as well as an archive photo display from the restaurant over the years. Their newsletter subscribers and followers to their Instagram and Facebook pages can look out for special offers and events, including a book signing with friend of the Fox & Hounds, Lisa Snowdon

Chef owner James Rix says: “We’re proud to be able to celebrate 20 years in business, having successfully run our restaurant for two decades and ridden the waves of the hospitality business over the past few years. We’d like to thank all of our customers, and we hope that customers old and new will come to celebrate with us this year, whether it’s to come to one of our special anniversary events or just to come in for a drink, some great food and a friendly chat.” foxandhounds-hunsdon.co.uk

Special limited-edition menu, with dishes, wine and prices from 2004

The Fox and Hounds will be celebrating its dishes of old, offering a special set dinner and drinks menu for a limited time only, with dishes from its opening year.

A Class & Status in Roman Britain Exhibition at Verulamium Museum

Anew thought-provoking exhibition at Verulamium Museum, SUPERIOR : INFERIOR seeks to get people talking by asking visitors to examine social class and status in Roman Verulamium and think about those concepts within society today.

The exhibition runs until November 11 and is guest curated by ancient historian Andrew Deathe.

Andrew said: “Social status was important to the Roman residents of Verulamium and this exhibition explores how they showed and used their social position.

“For me, the best history makes you think ‘What would I do if I was there?’, so we encourage visitors to think about how we view class today, how they would react in different social situations and how they would measure themselves against the ancient citizens?”

Visitors are taken on an interactive journey where they meet seven pairs of imagined inhabitants of ancient Verulamium whose stories vividly come to life through designs by local St Albans illustrator, Simon Maskell. Each pairing represents a different situation and uses archaeological objects, imagined conversations and other clues to enable visitors to decide who would have been perceived as higher status and who of lower status.

Newley, Audience Development Manager at St Albans Museums, said: “This unique exhibition is part of our ‘Revisiting the Romans’ series of interventions at the museum. Regular visitors will know that you can explore the wonders of Roman life, be immersed in recreated Roman rooms and admire the craftsmanship of the intricate large-scale mosaics on display but through this intervention, visitors are encouraged to explore how the occupants of Roman Verulamium viewed their social class and status - and discover how it affected their everyday lives.

“It’s been a delight to work with Andrew on this incredibly insightful and absorbing project and we look forward to seeing how visitors perceive class and society.”

Verulamium Museum, St Michael’s Street, St Albans, AL3 4SW, is open Monday to Friday 10am – 4.30pm (last admission 4pm) and Saturday 11am –3.30pm (last admission 3pm). Admission charges apply. Visit stalbansmuseums.org.uk and follow @stalbansmuseums

LADYBIRD BOOK EXHIBITION FLIES HOME TO ST ALBANS

Until 8 September 2024

From Peter and Jane with Pat the dog and What to Look for in Summer to classic fairy tales like Chicken Licken and The Three Little Pigs – just one look at an iconic Ladybird book and you’re instantly transported back in time by the distinctive designs that captured the imagination and hearts of so many children.

‘The Wonderful World of the Ladybird Artists’ exhibition, which opened at St Albans Museum + Gallery on 10 May, uncovers the story of the talented artists who illustrated Ladybird books and recounts the fascinating history of the little Loughborough print business which became a giant in children’s publishing.

Visitors are greeted by a ‘Wall of Books’ showcasing just about every Ladybird book issued between 1940 and 1980 (around 500 books) and can leaf through over 200 shared books in a ‘Summer Meadow’ installation of ‘grassy’ rugs and comfortable beanbags and enjoy interactive games too.

Colourful and family-friendly, the exhibition is the brainchild of Ladybird book expert and curator, Helen Day who has spent more than 20 years collecting books and researching the company.

Launched in 2018, the exhibition has toured the UK, but it has always been Helen’s ambition to bring it home to St Albans where she was born. Helen’s parents were both teachers in St Albans, Helen went to Cunningham Hill primary school as a young child, worked in Oaklands College for many years and went on to teach English as a foreign language around the world. Helen now resides with her husband in Harpenden.

A Ladybird book chosen to feature in this exhibition specifically is Warwick The Kingmaker as it refers to the famous Battle of St Albans which took place on 22 May 1455 and traditionally marks the beginning of the Wars of the Roses in Britain.

Helen says: “I’m thrilled that the exhibition is coming home to St Albans. I’ll have a chance to show my friends, family, colleagues and students what’s been absorbing me over these years!”

Displayed in the Weston Gallery and showcasing an unparalleled collection of books, original artworks and artefacts, the evocative exhibition traces the interconnected work of the many talented illustrators and tells the Ladybird story itself over its ‘golden years’ from 1940 to 1975 and how the artists played an immeasurable role in the extraordinary success of the company in the 20th century.

Helen continues: “For many years now, I’ve been interested in the history of Ladybird books and in the artists who illustrated them. I began as a collector, but my interest soon broadened into a desire to understand better the social history of Britain that the books contain. Ladybird books illustrated many childhoods, and the Ladybird artists gave us an interpretation of the 20th century in bright colour and careful detail.

“Hundreds of books are made available for visitors to browse through and share and it’s always such a joy to watch the expressions of adults as they recall the images and the memories they stir from their childhood and of children as they discover the wonderful illustrations for the very first time.”

Visitors will be taken through different zones and themes including Nature and the

Environment, History, Fairy Tales, and Learning to Read, each exploring the story and work of different artists including photographs of the locations, families, friends and neighbours who inspired them, and looking at the moments in time they were capturing.

One artist to look out for is Martin Aitchison, who illustrated around 100 books for Ladybird from the early 1960s including the popular Peter and Jane series and many Fairy Tale books including Martin’s personal favourite commission, Gulliver’s Travels. Martin was the only Ladybird book artist Helen met in person and they became friends before he died in 2016.

Alongside the exhibition, there will be engaging activities taking place during the May half-term and summer holidays for families and adults to enjoy including Making a Model Ladybird, a Ladybird Trail and several Talks.

Catherine Newley, Audience Development Manager at St Albans Museums, says:

“It’s fantastic to bring this magical exhibition home to St Albans, where Helen would have enjoyed the books herself as a child. The iconic Ladybird covers and illustrations were central to their success, and we are delighted to host this extensive and heart-warming exhibition which is sure to evoke feelings of childhood nostalgia and times gone by.”

Watch Collectors, What Makes You Tick?

Being a watch collector is an exhilarating and rewarding hobby, Paul from Baker Brothers tells us. The thrill of discovering a fantastic timepiece, buying it, and eagerly bringing it home or awaiting its delivery is unmatched. But once the excitement fades, the hunt for the next prized watch begins anew.

“Watches are incredibly personal possessions,” Paul explains. “They say so much about their owners. Each collector and watchmaker has a unique style and approach to watch collecting.”

Paul outlines the five types of watch collectors:

1. The Classic Collector: “This type of collector appreciates traditional watchmaking. They focus on detail and simplicity, valuing thoughtful design and the original purpose of the watch. It’s all about skilled craftsmanship.”

2. The Historian: “These collectors love horological achievements and aim to build a museum-worthy collection. They’re motivated by the stories and historical significance of watches, curating timepieces that represent pivotal moments in watchmaking history.”

3. The Investor: “Investors prioritise long-term value over immediate excitement. They have a keen eye for detail and a passion for watchmaking, ensuring their investments appreciate in worth over time.”

4. The Trendsetter: “Trendsetters embrace and set trends, often wearing pieces from smaller, lesser-known brands. They value rarity and uniqueness, always on the lookout for distinctive designs.”

5. The Driver: “Combining a passion for cars with watch collecting, Drivers admire the connection between automobile racing and sports chronographs. They appreciate the cultural significance of these watches, often inspired by the golden age of racing.”

To start collecting watches, Paul emphasises the importance of focusing on craftsmanship and condition whilst also considering the make and condition of a watch. “Watches that have been serviced or modified with non-branded parts can lose value. Knowing the key players

in the watchmaking industry helps avoid these pitfalls. Some watchmakers specialise in traditional techniques, others in cutting-edge technologies, and some blend both.”

Staying informed about new watch launches and opportunities is crucial. Paul recommends building relationships with retailers and keeping up with watch innovations.

“Watch collecting is both an art and a science,” Paul concludes. “Start by appreciating the history and craftsmanship of watchmaking. A great watch embodies intricate engineering, cultural heritage, historical processes, and time-tested traditions. With knowledge and passion, you can build a remarkable collection that reflects your unique style and interests.”

This year’s edition will continue to foster growth and excellence in the sector, building on a 21 year legacy with a commitment to promoting and supporting the UK’s design community.

As one of the world’s premier design events, the Festival showcases the diversity and dynamism of the global design community while highlighting London’s pivotal role as a hub of creativity.

This year’s Festival promises to be a beacon of inspiration, bringing together leading designers, architects, brands and innovators.

London Design Festival has earned the reputation as a key calendar moment of London’s autumn creative season, alongside London Fashion Week, Frieze Art Fair and the London Film Festival, attracting the greatest thinkers, practitioners, retailers and educators to the capital, in a citywide celebration.

The 2024 Festival programme will take over the city presenting groundbreaking ideas and creative concepts that underscore the vital role of design. The 2024 programme will feature major installations, museum exhibits, Design Districts

that highlight creative clusters spanning London, the Design Fair Material Matters, and the Global Design Forum, a thought leadership programme that brings together creative leaders to explore and propose solutions for pressing global issues.

LANDMARK PROJECTS INCLUDE:

Vert – Parade Ground, Chelsea College Of Art London Design Festival in association with American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC) will present ‘Vert’ at the Parade Ground at Chelsea College of Art, designed by leading industrial design practice Diez Office in partnership with climate farming experts OMC°C.

A sustainable structure in red-oak glulam is poised to revolutionise the cityscape. This Landmark Project proposes an innovative architectural solution for cooling cities, providing serene green spaces and enhancing urban biodiversity, while seamlessly integrating with existing infrastructure.

The structural frame will hold a biodegradable net with a curated selection of around 20 plant species. The living ecosystem will support local biodiversity, serve as a habitat for essential insect populations, enrich the urban environment, and provide a sheltered space where visitors to the Festival can gather and relax.

Duo - Old Naval College

Duo by Turkish designer and artist Melek Zeynep will be an innovative suspended installation that serves as an exploration of duality and interaction. Conceived as a rectangular prism with a minimalist design reminiscent of ancient forms, the installation embodies simplicity to evoke a sense of psychological closeness. At its core, Duo encapsulates the essence of ‘two’: a dialogue, a duality, an agreement, and the dynamic interplay between the centre and periphery.

Central to Duo’s concept is its interconnected mechanical system, meticulously crafted to induce a delicate balance and rhythmic harmony. Duo transcends traditional boundaries of design and space, inviting visitors to contemplate their primitive relationship with the environment.

FESTIVAL COMMISSIONS INCLUDE:

Power Out of Restriction & Battersea Power Station:

In partnership, to create a community inspired installation for the exciting new riverside neighbourhood. The pupils delighted the audience with several dramatic performances across music, drama and dance. Exhibiting the very best of the Expressive Arts Faculty at the School, visitors to the Radlett Centre were also treated to a stunning pupil art exhibition in the foyer.

The art department at St Margaret’s School has gone from strength to strength over recent years with many of its photography pupils gaining some of the highest grades in the last academic year. With considerable investment in its arts facilities and the addition of dance this academic year, pupils have been given multiple opportunities to join troupes and participate in high level competitions across the country.

Lara Pechard, Head at St Margaret’s School commented, “The Radlett Centre is such a fantastic local venue and it was wonderful to witness such a display of young talent. Our pupils have worked tirelessly perfecting their performances, giving the audience a chance to relive some of our most memorable moments within the performing arts, including our production of Les Misérables last December. The performing arts are so important and as a former St Margaret’s student, it’s so exciting to see that it is still such a huge part of school life. Not all young people who love music, dance and drama will go on to pursue them as careers but if my experience is anything to go by, a school that provides these opportunities is equipping its students with a confidence and passion that will be with them for life.”

Silverstone Festival (previously known as The Classic) is an award-winning event staged annually at the famous Silverstone Circuit in Northamptonshire: birthplace of the FIA Formula One World Championship and home to the Formula 1 British Grand Prix.

Perfect timing for the ultimate summer festival atmosphere, the epic end-of-summer event not only boasts the country’s biggest line-up of retro races but also welcomes unrivalled displays of much-loved classic cars in their thousands. The

event regularly attracts close to 1,000 race entries and draws crowds of more than 100,000.

This year’s amazing programme of historic motorsport features a stellar line-up of 20 spectacular showdowns spanning a century of standout on-track action. The festival will also be honouring the legacy of Ayrton Senna, with displays of the cars that shaped his life and career.

And, adding to petrolhead heaven, 100 car clubs (and counting!) have already signed up for special infield showcases. Members of registered clubs can take advantage of the not-to-be-missed opportunity to snap up special Car Club Display Packages.

As tradition dictates, many of these participating clubs will be celebrating milestone automotive anniversaries in stunning style with their own dazzling displays topped by memorable track parades on the legendary Silverstone Grand Prix circuit.

Landmarks being celebrated in style this

Ayrton Senna Tribute

August include 60 years of the mighty Ford Mustang and 110 years of Maserati. It was a decade ago when, to mark the Italian marque’s centenary, the late Sir Stirling Moss led-out a parade on track driving one of the revered company’s seminal 250F racers – Maserati Club UK has more plans for 2024.

Two very welcome newcomers to the 2024 Festival are the Marcos Owners Club and Mk1 Golf Owners Club, both with significant birthdays to honour in 2024. The former is the original worldwide club for all those interested in Marcos Cars, the British sportscar company set up by Jem Marsh and Frank Costin exactly 65 years ago in 1959. The latter is marking the golden anniversary of Volkswagen’s game-changing Golf, first introduced in 1974.

Other notable anniversaries include 75 years of Abarth, 50 years of the wedge-shaped Triumph TR7, 30 years of the Mazda MX-5 Owner Club (always a big supporter of the Festival) and, intriguingly, the 75th anniversary of the Healey Silverstone. Giving his Riley-engine roadster a sporty tag, Donald Healey named his two-seater after Silverstone where it raced. Just 105 examples were produced in period, all hand-built locally in Warwick, and several are expected to join the Healey Drivers’ Club celebrations at the model’s eponymous venue.

“The incredible turnout of wonderful classic cars is, in every sense, right at the heart of the Festival,” commented Event Director, Nick Wigley. “The superb displays never fail to provide a brilliant canvas of motoring history while the deep-seated enthusiasm and passion shared by their loving owners always creates a true community vibe among such an impressive gathering of like-minded car lovers.”

Visitors of all ages will also be treated to access to both racing paddocks, open trackside grandstands plus an incredible assortment of demos, displays, activities and interactive entertainments over all three days.

For those who prefer other activities to enjoy, off-track highlights returning in 2024 include the event’s Foodie Fest with chef demos and Tasting Tent masterclasses, a Shopping Village, interactive experiences, high energy stunt shows in the Shift & Drift Zone, a host of funfair rides and live music on all three evenings. Sophie Ellis-Bextor tops the bill on Friday evening, followed by Brit Award-winning Busted on Saturday and celebrated singer, songwriter and television personality, Olly Murs on Sunday.

Extensive 10-hour broadcasts of each day are available to view for free on the Silverstone Festival YouTube channel, but there’s nothing like witnessing the very best historic motorsport first-hand.

A wide range of tickets including camping, VIP hospitality options and Car Club Display Packages, are available.

BRAIN-HEALTHY LIFESTYLE

Research indicates that adopting a “brain-healthy lifestyle” can reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s and other dementias, potentially preventing symptoms and slowing or even reversing cognitive decline. One crucial component of this lifestyle is lifelong learning.

Lifelong learning benefits the brain due to its ability to learn and grow as we age, a process known as “brain plasticity.” Regularly challenging and training the brain is essential for this growth. Myelin, the white matter in our brains, plays a key role in improving and maximizing performance on various tasks. The more we practice learning something, the denser the myelin becomes, enhancing our ability to learn better and faster. Myelin acts as a coating for the axons (nerve fibers) of brain cells, facilitating the formation of more neural pathways. This enables faster transmission of electrical impulses, allowing for quicker information processing. As we age, myelin naturally decreases, making it harder to acquire

new skills. However, learning new skills later in life can help regrow myelin and boost brain power.

The dos and don’ts of fake tanning in rainy summer weather

Warm and wet weather doesn’t go hand-in-hand with applying fake tan. So, experts reveal the toolkit you need to achieve bronzed skin without the sun. By Lara Owen

If you’re not heading to sunny Europe this summer, you may need a boost from a trusty bottle to evoke a glowing tan. But Britain’s quintessentially soggy season means the ordeal of full-body tanning is even tricker than usual in the muggy weather.

Whether you’re a novice or seasoned faketanner, you can improve your routine for a rich and radiant look. So, we’ve consulted tanning experts to reveal their tricks of the trade for the perfect home tan.

Create the best environment inside

“The main thing to keep in mind when applying fake tan when the weather is hot is to try to keep the skin as cool as possible,” notes Beauty Pie’s editorial director and in-house beauty expert, Nicola Moulton. “When the skin is hot, it naturally tries to cool the body down, resulting in sweating, which in turn prevents the skin from absorbing anything, especially something as light as a tan solution.”

So waiting at least a couple of hours after a hot shower is imperative, and opt for a quick-drying formula. Solutions that are light, such as a mousse as opposed to a lotion, will lessen the feeling of suffocation on the skin. “Formulas with hydrating ingredients, like hyaluronic acid and peptides will dry down into the skin, and you will wake up with

a lit-from-within glow,” says Moulton.

Just like selecting a foundation or concealer –deciding which shade of tan to go for alongside the formula is imperative to a fabulous finish. If you have pink undertones, go for a tan that has a more golden guide colour, if you have cooler undertones, go for a tan that has a green guide colour to avoid washing you out. The Bare by Vogue Williams line has a whole ‘shop by shade’ approach, which is helpful for newbies.

Prepping and application

In hot and wet weather your skin will have produced even more oils than usual. Just as we prep our face before make-up, we need to prep our skin before tanning. For best results, exfoliate your whole body so that the tan will blend in and absorb more evenly.

While prepping your skin for tanning is imperative, the process truly begins with getting the application right, and this means taking your time. “Take it section by section, starting from the legs upwards. Use sweeping motions to ensure a seamless finish and leave hands, feet and face until last,” advises Charlene Flanagan, make-up artist and co-

founder of tan and skincare brand, Ella & Jo.

Applying an oil-free barrier cream to particularly dry areas, such as knees, ankles and knuckles will prevent streaks and patchiness. As opposed to adding new product to the mitt, using what’s leftover from your body application to sweep across your wrists, hands, ankles and feet means you won’t have darker patches.

If you feel you’ve made a mistake, don’t panic. Even the most seasoned self-tanners miss spots from time to time. “If you notice streaks or uneven patches, don’t worry, you can just reapply a gradual lotion onto these areas and you’ll see a blend within four to six hours” says Flanagan.

How to avoid streaks in the wet weather

The most important thing to have in your tanning canon – potentially more so than the tan itself – are tools. “To avoid streaks and orange palms, invest in a top-quality tanning mitt,” says Flanagan. “This ensures a smooth and even application, while also preventing unwanted staining.” Avoiding any chances to introduce humidity into the mix is essential. While carrying waterproofs is advised, Moulton suggests to avoid showering right before you tan and make the most of the coolest time of day, such as early mornings or evenings.

Top tip for fake tanning when it’s hot and muggy

One thing that particularly applies to hotweather tanning is the age-old adage to never wear tight clothes immediately after. “Tight clothing can rub against freshly applied fake tan and cause streaking or smudging,” says Flanagan. “Opt for loose, breathable clothing until your tan has fully dried and developed. Wear loose-fitting clothes that cover your skin to protect the tan from getting wet,” notes Moulton, “and carry an umbrella!”

To avoid at all costs…

When we’re in a rush, it can be tempting to load on the product, which results

a sweaty and streaky

“Never try to apply your fake tan with a DIY application (e.g. socks, cloths) or your hands,” says Moulton, “and don’t try loading fake tan on your face with the same volume as your body.” Instead, try a face-friendly tanning mist or liquid. “This formula is ultra-fine to ensure no product gets stuck in fine lines or dry patches,” says Moulton. Opting for one with brightening niacinamide will help care for your skin as well as giving a sunkissed glow.

Flanagan emphasises the importance of prepping. “Rushing through the preparation process can result in a patchy or uneven tan. Take the time to exfoliate, moisturise and remove any unwanted hair before applying fake tan for best results.”

Summer of Interiors: 2024

“Whispering Luxury focuses on high-quality, designer icons that are crafted to last a lifetime”

With summer reaching its peak, our minds are turning turn to thoughts of out-of-office messages, feeling some sun on our faces, and finally finding time to wind down.

Focus lands on our indoor and outdoor spaces and how we can indulge in, or escape, the heat.

As the world of interior design continues to evolve and progress, the term ‘trend’ gets thrown around a lot. While we’re not focused on fleeting TikTok-esque crazes with cryptic names, it’s evident that the design zeitgeist and the broader cultural atmosphere, coupled with our individual style and personal history, does gently influence our design choices. These elements serve as our creative compass, empowering us to authentically express ourselves in our homes, and make living that bit more delightful.

For 2024 so-far, the general theme has been... no theme. As recent design shows Salone del Mobile and 3daysofdesign disappear into the distance, new shapes, sizes, colours, tones, textures and materials are ripe for the picking. Colours are fusing in new and

interesting ways, contours are getting more audacious, influences range the plain to the pioneering, and furniture is helping us to all connect.

Dive into our summer interiors report 2024, where there’s something for everyone, the rulebook is relaxed and it’s all about doing what makes you feel good and showing who you are. So, what’ll it be?

WHISPERING LUXE:

Whispering Luxury focuses on high-quality, designer icons that are crafted to last a lifetime, and rooms should still be places that feel beautiful but not overdone, while we’re adding in the occasional statement object, conversationprompting pieces of design to show off our personality and taste in a way that elevates the everyday, as well as being elegant.

It zooms in on excellence, timelessness, refinement, and careful selection, but with a dash of fun and personality mixed in. More characterful, less austere. A way to live with both chic-ness and joy.

COLOSSAL CURVES:

We’re still stuck on curves – and we’re not sorry. They’re just more soul-enriching and soothing than harsh and sharp am-I-going-to-bump-myself-onthat angles and lines.

Over the past few seasons, we’ve seen curves move through the home, first on upholstered pieces then in accessories and smaller items until the curved hard furniture movement came last year. As our homes get ever comfier and more comforting, curves have become bigger, bolder, braver and better than before. And it feels good.

This all goes hand-in-hand with the contemporary penchant for ‘seating systems,’ seats and sofas that extend and lengthen to create multi-person seating islands which provide endless seating arrangement options in a litany of shapes.

SURPRISING SHADES:

It works, it really does, the pop of that-doesn’tmatch brightness smiling out from a space putting a grin on faces too. Moving forward, we’re liberating, loosening up and getting ready to experiment. It’s time for ‘Unexpected Colour’ to enter the home, a zing of vividity where there’s no business being one. Be it lemon yellow, sage green or glowing magenta, the only rule is that the pigment should stand out and draw the eye.

Let’s break free from the design constraints, and dictate ourselves the colours that will take the spotlight from room to room. Showcasing a single splash of standout colour or a restrained few pieces of pigment in a space is – there’s no other word for it – fun.

TALKING POINTS:

The time of the TV as the entertainment centre du jour is over – so why should all of our furniture angle towards it? Let’s shake off that convention and make rooms more about people again, about talking and contemplating. About hosting and games and drinks and snacks and generally connecting. Try to put that phone down for a moment. Sounds good doesn’t it?

Decorating-wise, it’s really quite simple. Some kind of vague circle formation is key, do bear in mind the other beautiful things to enjoy – window views or artworks or fireplaces – but seating should be primarily focused on the most important thing in the room: other people.

PAPER FOLDS:

Paper-inspired forms are seeing a rise in 2D-esque experimental approaches to furniture construction, from Ron Arad’s sculptural One Page chair and footstool for Moroso which was conceived when considering the curves of a single piece of paper, to Tiziano Guardini and Luigi Ciuffreda’s Narinari chair for B&B Italia: back and seat seemingly folding together origami-like. Meanwhile Lema’s Blanca armchair by Roberto Lazzeroni appears to be composed of shapely cut out pieces, leaving a gaping recess in the back, while Gallotti & Radice’s H2O chair by Studiopepe is decorated with a circle cut out from its backrest, and the brand’s Selce-T table – also by Studiopepe –comprises of cut-and-stick-style fragmented shapes. chaplins.co.uk

Exploring the health benefits of swimming for women FEEL THE POWER WITH ORIGIN

For women of all ages, swimming isn’t just a refreshing activity; it’s a versatile and accessible exercise that champions women’s health and vitality. From bolstering cardiovascular fitness to supporting bone strength and mental well-being, this lowimpact exercise offers many benefits that address various aspects of women’s health.

Origin understands the unique benefits swimming offers women of all ages and has crafted indoor pools that enhance these advantages for over 40 years. As women navigate different life stages— from managing hormonal changes to preventing chronic conditions —swimming provides a comprehensive approach to wellness. In this article, we’ll delve into how regular swimming can contribute to a healthier, more balanced lifestyle, highlighting its specific advantages and offering insights into how this timeless activity can support and enhance women’s overall well-being.

Cardiovascular Health: Heart disease remains a leading cause of mortality among women globally. Regular swimming sessions strengthen the heart muscle and improve circulation, reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases. The ‘Million Women Study’ found that women who swam twice a week had a 20% lower risk of heart disease and stroke.

Having an Origin indoor pool at home offers a convenient and effective way to incorporate swimming into your weekly routine.

Bone Health: Women are more prone to osteoporosis and bone density loss, particularly after menopause. Swimming offers a gentle, lowimpact workout and helps improve bone health by providing weight-bearing resistance without stressing the joints.

Hormonal Balance: Swimming has been shown to positively impact hormonal balance in women, particularly during menopause and menstruation. During these periods, women often experience symptoms like hot flushes, mood swings, and anxiety. Swimming, especially in cooler water, has been found to alleviate these symptoms by regulating body temperature and releasing stress-relieving hormones.

Blood Sugar Regulation: Swimming has been shown to improve glucose control and insulin sensitivity in women, making it beneficial for those with diabetes or at risk of developing the condition. High-intensity intermittent swims are particularly effective in regulating blood sugar levels.

Stress Relief: Swimming’s rhythmic, meditative nature can promote relaxation and reduce stress levels by releasing endorphins, the body’s natural feel-good hormones. It’s a meditative activity that calms the mind, alleviates anxiety and improves overall mental well-being. A survey by Swim England reported that 74% of female swimmers felt mentally refreshed after swimming, highlighting its stressrelieving benefits.

Muscle Strength: Swimming engages multiple muscle groups, including the core, arms, legs, and back, promoting strength, endurance, and flexibility. Origin’s pools are designed to facilitate full-body workouts that improve muscle tone and enhance mobility as women age.

Swimming offers a holistic approach to women’s health through its unique combination of physical, mental, emotional and therapeutic benefits. By providing a controlled environment and expertly designed facilities, Origin empowers women to prioritise their health and well-being through the joy of swimming. Whether you want to improve your fitness, manage stress, or support your overall health and well-being, swimming offers many benefits. DISCOVER TROPICANDI STYLE

When it’s sunny, even your décor wants to shine. Get to know more about Tropicandi - a hybrid trend that combines the dreamy Palm Springs colour palette with a touch of Scandinavian cool.

Amthal Karim, Head of Design at Furniture And Choice comments:

“Tropicandi celebrates the best of summer with its bold and cheerful style. Bringing together tropical décor and Scandinavian style may seem surprising initially but they have more similarities than you think! For one thing, they both bring touches of the outdoors inside through their décor.

Tropicandi takes a lot of inspiration from Palm Springs design. Think airy open plan living with retro-inspired pieces and splashes of colour. Combine that with Scandi’s sleek, minimal style and you get a cheerful summer vibe that’s fresh, chic and utterly Instagrammable.

The Tropicandi colour palette has to include peach - after all, what’s Palm Springs style without peach and sky blue? Sage green and light pink are also colours originally part of the popular design trend so channel that retro aesthetic by introducing dreamy California tones. The key element is to make the most of your natural lighting. The sunshine streaming into your home is the magic ingredient to make it feel like you’re chilling at a celeb pad in LA.

Neutral touches are also essential in creating this look. Taking inspiration from the Palm Springs desert, earthy tones are the way to go as well as crisp whites to evoke the clear sky. Bringing in splashes of pastel colours will also accentuate the retro motel aesthetic - think flamingo pink or teal tints for that fresh and funky pop of colour.

What else makes Tropicandi stand out? It’s the subtle glamour thanks to its Palm Springs influence. Accessories go hand in hand with making this colour palette stand out. Pay homage

to its retro roots by giving pastels more vibrance and meaning. Pick soft furnishings with patterns like a cushion with stripes or a colourful throw to match the summery look. It’s also not Tropicandi without palm trees and sunshine so if you have any photos of your holiday snaps lying around it’s a good idea to frame up and display them.

“Tropicandi also brings together tropical and Scandi decor’s shared love of natural materials”

Tropicandi also brings together tropical and Scandi decor’s shared love of natural materials. Wood plays an important part in bringing this trend to life through furniture, flooring or accessories. A wooden dining set or coffee table helps highlight both tropical style and Scandi elements thanks to their relaxing texture. There’s also no such thing as too many plants for this trend! The California aesthetic doesn’t stop here with palms and monsteras. Hanging plants like pothos or ivy also fit right in and complete the tropical touches.” furniturechoice.co.uk
