LONDON INTERNATIONAL HORSE SHOW 2024

Excel London, 18 – 22 December

London International Horse Show returns to Excel London from 18 – 22 December with five days of topclass international equestrian sport, amazing equestrian displays and a luxury shopping village. The Show, which is a hallmark of the global equestrian calendar, is the only indoor show in the United Kingdom to host three FEI World Cup™ competitions bringing exceptional elite international talent and competition to the country’s capital this Christmas.

Show Jumping commences at Excel London on Wednesday 18 December with a highlight of the day coming from the exhilarating LeMieux Puissance. The jumping action then continues with the Yeti Under-25 British Championship on Thursday 19 December, where exciting upand-coming British talent will fight it out for

the prestigious title. Friday 20 December then welcomes a double act of CSI5* Show Jumping thrills, starting with the Christmas Pudding Speed Stakes in the afternoon, and followed by the famous London Grand Prix that evening, an event visitors will not want to miss. The weekend is then capped-off in style with the Longines FEI Jumping World CupTM – won last year by Britain’s most decorated Olympic Show Jumper and London International Horse Show Ambassador, Ben Maher – on Sunday 22 December.

The FEI Dressage World Cup™ supported by Horse & Hound, takes place on the first two days of the Show, with the Grand Prix opening the Show on the morning of Wednesday 18 December. The evening of Thursday 19 December will showcase the Freestyle to Music. Meanwhile, the FEI Driving World Cup™,

where a team of four horses are driven around, through and over a set of obstacles against the clock, takes place on Friday 20 December with the final on Saturday 21 December. Viewers can expect to be on the edge of their seats when watching these extreme classes.

The Markel Jockeys Jumping in aid of The Injured Jockeys Fund will take place on the evening of Friday 20 December and will feature some of the most celebrated jockeys from Great Britain and Ireland, including Sir AP McCoy, going head-to-head in teams over a Show Jumping course.

The New Horizon Plastics London Arena –which launched last year – will play host once again to a variety of classes including the London International Showing Series, as well as Kennel Club Dog Agility classes including the Crufts Agility and Jumping Qualifiers and Kennel Club Starters Jumping classes. Alongside these, visitors can also experience masterclass sessions each day demonstrating skills development in Dressage, Eventing, Jumping, Showing, and Driving.

Fan favourites, the Shetland Pony Grand National and Kennel Club Dog Agility, are back once again and will feature in the International Arena every day. The Brilliance Horse Auction will also take place on Saturday evening where worldclass Sport Horses will be auctioned off to both a live audience and online through live streaming.

James of St Albans is a small family business on the historic and beautiful George Street. Established over sixty years ago by Lionel James and is carried on today by his son Steve (pictured) and daughter Wendy.

THE CONNAUGHT CHRISTMAS TREE 2024 by artist Conrad Shawcross RA unveiled in Mayfair

The legendary Connaught Christmas Tree 2024 has been unveiled outside The Connaught - this year designed by influential British artist Conrad Shawcross RA, marking the start of the festive season on Mount Street in the heart of Mayfair.

The magnificent Nordmann Fir tree, sourced from Denmark, stands nine metres tall on Carlos Place and is bedecked with 90 eye-catching, bespoke lanterns, each one made from aluminium and hand painted with a silver coating. At the top of the tree is a bright, shining star which illuminates the streets of Mayfair, representing a symbol of hope this Christmas. Shawcross is known for incorporating mathematical ideas and geometrical patterns of interference within his designs, which are also echoed across this year’s tree design.

Commenting on his creation, Shawcross said, “I first stepped inside The Connaught as a young boy in the ‘80s when my stepfather, Jonny Dewe Matthews, was an artist in residence at the hotel. He captured the busy processes of the chefs in the kitchen and portrayed this in his artwork. I still have a copper saucepan that I was given at the time, and the chef made me the best scrambled eggs. I am pleased to be re-living this happy memory and working with the hotel to create a bit of Christmas magic. I’ve been using light for over 30 years in my work so I hope my unique perspective on this medium will be a fitting and welcoming continuance of the designers who came before me.”

This will be the ninth year The Connaught Christmas Tree has been designed by a celebrated artist. Past tree designers include Dame Rachel Whiteread, Suzy Murphy, Damien Hirst, Sir Antony Gormley, Dame Tracey Emin DBE, Michael Craig-Martin, Sean Scully, Idris Khan and Annie Morris. Christmas Cracker kicks off the festive season in St Albans

The annual street festival took place from noon until darkness fell on Sunday 17 November with St Peter’s Street closed to traffic to create a vibrant atmosphere.

Among the attractions were live music, fairground rides, Santa’s grotto, street entertainers and around 100 market stalls selling hot food, drinks and seasonal gifts.

Much of the family-friendly entertainment was free with something to suit people of all ages and abilities.

Festive decorations and installations were illuminated throughout the event and there were guest appearances from some of the stars of this year’s Alban Arena pantomime, Cinderella.

The Christmas Cracker was organised by St Albans City and District Council, sponsored by St Albans City Centre BID and part-funded by the Government’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund.

British Sign Language Interpreters and Sighted Guides were at the activities throughout the day.

Councillor Anthony Rowlands, the Council’s Lead for Events, said: “This was a fantastic occasion to get the festive season underway and I was delighted to see so many people out and about, enjoying themselves.

“The run-up to Christmas is a vital time for many of our local businesses – shops, pubs,

restaurants and market traders.

“The Cracker provided a boost to the local economy by attracting so many residents and visitors to the City Centre and hopefully they will have been encouraged to come back for more in the weeks leading up to Christmas Day.”

Vivien Cannon, Manager of St Albans City Centre BID, said: “Christmas is well and truly launched! We welcome you back into our City Centre to continue enjoying the festive spirit and to tick off the items on your Christmas shopping list.”

Charter Market

Another highlight of the festive season will be the additional December dates for the twice-weekly Charter Market. The Market will take place every Thursday, Friday and Sunday, 9am to 3pm, in the fortnight leading up to Christmas Day as well as the usual Wednesdays and Saturdays. There will be an extra day’s trading, too, on Tuesday 24 December.

Pantomime

Cinderella starts at the Alban Arena on Thursday 12 December and runs until Sunday 12 January. Its stars include EastEnder Samantha Womack, comics Bob Goulding and Ian Kirkby, and Union J singer George Shelley.

Healthy Conversations at Christmas

With the Christmas holidays on the horizon, parents will be trying hard to make room for healthy discourse within the family and sometimes as adults, it can be challenging to manage our own phone habits during the festive season or while at the dinner table, let alone those of our children. It is therefore no surprise that many parents are struggling to ensure positive conversations with their teenagers, which can be tricky at the best of times.

For schools, helping parents to develop improved conversations with their children can be problematic. Namely, because the biggest struggle for schools is reversing some of the parent behaviours around phone and device usage. Encouraging parents to redress the balance and to make changes that are reflective of the behaviours they wish to see from their children, means schools must work even more closely with parents and pupils.

During the Christmas holidays, there are three main areas that parents can focus their attention on. The first is around establishing boundaries. We need to be communicating that parents should initiate redlines that are well understood. Perhaps that means everyone comes to the dinner table

to eat together and that phones and devices are not permitted at this time. Or in-keeping with the season, it might be the case that the whole family goes to a place of worship together, or watches a football game, or has tea with a grandparent. Creating shared time or specific experiences over the holidays will naturally facilitate more conversation.

Just as during the school day, if we don’t introduce ‘protected time’ at home, there is far less chance for conversation to flow. Secondly, routine at home can encourage conversation. Children will often find familiar situations more comfortable, and it is perhaps during these moments that they are more likely to open up about their day or express difficulties. Encouraging parents to think about using car journeys to cricket practice or time during a dog walk to talk to their child can be helpful. Often, these occasions provide a platform to talk but in a limited capacity which isn’t always face to face.

Listening to our young people is key regardless of the time of year, and schools are continually having to find new ways of leaning into conversations and nurturing pupils to talk more but as ever, keeping up as parents is not easy. The Christmas holidays provide families with more time to be together and nurture connections; but it’s also a time for tolerance, understanding and empathy.

SKIN CANCER AWARENESS: What to Look for and How Early Detection Can Save Lives

Here’s a brief guide to help you identify the most common types of skin cancers and understand when it’s time to seek professional advice.

THE THREE KEY TYPES OF SKIN CANCER

While there are many forms of skin cancer, the three most common are melanoma, squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), and basal cell carcinoma (BCC). Each type can be identified when the lesion reaches a few millimetres in diameter, but it’s the subtle signs that can often go unnoticed at first.

Melanoma: The Most Dangerous, But Less Common

Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer, known for its ability to spread quickly beneath the skin and into the lymph nodes. While melanoma only accounts for around 3% of all skin cancers, it is crucial to catch it early. Melanomas typically appear as new or changing moles. Key warning signs include:

• Asymmetry: One half of the mole is different from the other

• Irregular borders: Edges that are jagged or blurred

• Multiple colours: Shades of brown, black, or even red, white, or blue

• Growing size: Moles that increase in size or change shape

If you notice any of these changes, it’s essential to consult a dermatologist. In children and teenagers, new moles can be normal as they go

through growth stages, but melanoma in this age group is rare. However, young adults—particularly those who have used sunbeds or spent a lot of time in the sun—are at higher risk. By the age of 50, your skin will have developed its full set of moles. Any new mole appearing after this age should be carefully evaluated.

Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC): Often Missed, Yet Important to Spot Early SCC is more common than melanoma but less so than BCC. This type of skin cancer tends to affect older individuals and, though less aggressive than melanoma, it can metastasize (spread to other parts of the body) if left untreated. SCC often appears as a small, scaly spot or a crusty scab that refuses to heal. Over time, the lesion may grow larger, often on sun-exposed areas like the face, ears, or hands. The key signs to look for include: • A persistent scab or ulcer that doesn’t heal

If you notice any such changes, especially if they appear in areas exposed to the sun, a prompt consultation is important.

Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC): Slow-Growing but Common

BCC is the most prevalent type of skin cancer and, fortunately, it rarely metastasizes. It typically presents as a small, shiny nodule that grows slowly over time. However, it can also appear as a flat, scaly patch or a scar-like area. While BCCs are often seen in older adults and those with prolonged sun exposure, they can also occur in those with fair skin who have had intermittent sunburns or who spend a lot of time outdoors.

Typical characteristics of BCC include:

• A pearly or waxy appearance

• A persistent, non-healing sore or ulcer

• A slow-growing area that may bleed or crust over time

Although BCCs are less dangerous than melanomas or SCCs, early treatment can help prevent complications and ensure a better cosmetic outcome.

Early Detection and Why It Matters

While the signs of skin cancer are often visible, they can be subtle and easy to overlook, especially when they resemble benign skin conditions. Regular self-exams and professional checks are essential for early identification. In summer of this year, Sienna Miller launched the ultimate Boho-chic clothing line at M&S, with most pieces selling out within hours.

Following its success, the 42-year-old actor has released a second collection with the British retailer, comprising of 35 partywear designs – arriving in stores just in time for the festive lead-up.

Featuring romantic ruffles (quintessential to Miller’s free-spirited taste) luxurious satin, sequins and rich velvet, the designs are inspired by the days of disco and New York’s legendary nightclub, Studio 54.

“I’d love to have partied with David Bowie,” says Miller, “back in the real heyday.”

With animal print, wide-leg trousers and fitted waistcoats, the collection brings a retro edge to partywear. “No one partied like they did then,” Miller notes, “so I tried to capture that spirit.”

Miller has long been hailed for her unique style, and has subsequently become the ‘it’ girl of Noughties Boho fashion.

There’s nothing that says “party season” quite like sequins. Whether you’re partial to just some sparkle or prefer a more ostentatious approach, designers break down the best ways to style sequins this Christmas, without looking tacky.

Why do sequins keep coming back?

Love them or hate them: sequins are a guaranteed fashion staple each December.

“Sequins embody celebration, confidence and add that touch of ‘fabulous’ we all love during the festive season,” says British fashion designer and podcast host Amanda Wakeley OBE.

“For 2024, designers are reimagining sequins beyond just the classic dress – we’re seeing them in structured blazers, fluid trousers, as well as shirts and T-shirts that can be layered up.”

modern twists and in a lower key sparkle, making them more appropriate for daytime style and more wearable beyond the party season.”

How to style sequins as a minimalist

Understated style has been a leading trend in 2024, with minimalist brands like The Row, founded by Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, steering the simple sartorial choices. Searches for their classic Margaux tote spiked by 198% year-on-year according to the online fashion retailer, Lyst.

If this trend speaks to you, then the trick to styling sequins subtly is all about balance. “A sequin top under a sharp blazer or a shimmering skirt paired with a crisp, white shirt or a cosy cashmere knit gives you that understated glamour,” explains Wakeley.

Opting for sequins in neutral tones is an easy way to add a festive touch to an otherwise simple outfit. “Champagne, silver or even a soft blush catches the light in a way that’s chic but not over the top,” says Wakeley. “It’s that whisper of shimmer that says you’re in the Christmas spirit without shouting it from the rooftops.”

If you’re dipping your tow into the trend, “consider incorporating sequins as an accent rather than the main event,” suggests AliExpress UK‘s general manager, Bonnie Zhao. “A sequin-trimmed camisole paired with tailored trousers and a blazer offers a sophisticated touch of shimmer. A simple knit sweater with subtle sequin embroidery elevates a casual look.”

How to make sequins high-end

With the ‘quiet luxury’ trend still riding high, knowing how to style sequins with a touch of sophistication is key for your 2024 Christmas ensembles.

“Sophistication with sequins is all about elegant lines and careful styling,” Wakeley explains. “A beautifully tailored, floor-length sequin gown or a refined sequin midi with long sleeves can be stunning.”

For a more luxe look, take inspiration from the Princess of Wales’ love affair with Jenny Packham’s shimmering gowns. Boddington suggests opting for dark and muted tones, “emerald green, navy, gunmetal grey or classic black instead of silver or gold will create a more opulent affect,” she explains.

Wakeley says to team your rich and jewel-toned

sequins with minimal accessories and play with textures to elevate the ensemble. “Pair with barely-there jewellery – think gold hoops or a sleek bangle, then pare back the shine by shoulder-robing a tux jacket or a velvet smoking jacket.

“Playing with textures like a velvet clutch or satin shoes helps keep the look rich and layered. The goal is to make sequins feel like part of a polished, intentional ensemble, not just the showstealer,” she explains.

How to be the head turner

If you’re more on the extroverted side, perhaps the previous advice made your eyes roll. Well not to worry, there’s plenty of room for ostentatious glamour when it comes to styling sequins.

“If you’re ready to embrace full-on glamour, don’t hold back!” exclaims Zhao. “Embrace playful textures by layering different sequin sizes and finishes.”

Wakeley agrees, suggesting if you’re going all out, you must lean into it. “A full-length, sequin dress in a striking colour or a trouser suit will really steal the show.

“Pair it with a fabulous pair of heels and bold, sculptural earrings and a bold lip. It’s about movement, impact, and sparkle …embracing the joy of dressing up.

“As I always say, it’s about how your clothes make you feel. If you feel great you will undoubtedly shine.”

Kate Moss’ new Zara collection

The supermodel is collaborating with the Spanish high-street store to create a capsule collection. By Lara Owen

Two fashion power houses have collided as Nineties style icon Kate Moss and the high-street retailer Zara collaborate for a series of high-profile capsule staples.

The Zara X Kate Moss collection launches on 30th November in store and online, and will comprise of ready-to-wear pieces and accessories intended for a big night out.

Styled by Katy England, a fashion stylist known for her extensive work for Alexander McQueen, the collection blends classic cuts and grunge glamour.

Moss said that she wanted to create “the perfect party capsule [with] pieces that feel effortlessly chic, but with an edge.”

This is the first time Moss has collaborated on a fashion collection in 10 years, since launching her second Topshop collection back in 2014.

Since then, Moss has had various business forays, such as launching her eponymous talent agency in 2016 and a beauty brand called Cosmoss in 2022.

Moss’ first clothing collaboration with a highstreet store was in 2007, when the supermodel co-created and designed a fashion collection for Topshop that also sold through retailers including Barneys New York.

The collection created a frenzy of fashion lovers. A Moss “countdown to launch” board was erected in Topshop’s Oxford Street store window,

and on 30th April, Moss launched her line by briefly appearing in the window modelling a red dress from the collection.

This collection was quintessentially Moss: featuring boho vests and one-shoulder minidresses alongside grunge-y skinny jeans and cropped leather jackets.

Moss continued to design for the high street brand until 2010, when she turned her focus to more high-end retailers, such as designing handbags for the French label Longchamp.

But following the monumental success of her first line, Moss returned to Topshop for a one-off collection in 2014, and on the day it launched she appeared at Oxford Street once again in a black and gold tuxedo suit.

The event drew hordes of shoppers hoping to catch a glimpse of the supermodel – fans are undoubtedly crossing their fingers for a reenactment for the 2024 Zara launch.

With Moss’ Nineties party-girl past – there is no doubt that this collection will focus on the trademark slips, sparkles and bohemian blouses the model is famed for.

As a partywear collection, Moss’ iconic leopard print will surely feature, whether it be in the form of clothing or accessories.

Moss said this collection mixes “classic cuts with just the right amount of glam to take you through the party season.” There’s no doubt it will bring a new edge to this season’s party wardrobe.

Using data from Pinterest, Where Saints Go found searches for the term ‘bedding aesthetic’ have increased 90 per cent, while searches for ‘bedding sets’ are also on the rise.

NEW SHOW HOME AT HOMEWOOD GROVE UNVEILED

At Homewood Grove in Chertsey, one of Rangeford Villages’ specialist retirement villages for the over 60s, a brand-new show home that has been expertly designed by their newly appointed Design Curator and TV personality, Laurence LlewelynBowen, has just been unveiled.

At the launch event, guests were invited to take a tour of the opulent new show home and the exceptional village facilities, followed by a complimentary afternoon tea at Oak and Honey, the village’s contemporary restaurant, open to owners and the local community alike.
