rom Dubai to Sweden and London to New York, Rana Begum’s work has been viewed by millions across the globe. She now returns to her former home of St Albans in Hertfordshire to present brand new works at her solo exhibition, Ordered Form. Curated by UH Arts + Culture and played out in the underground Weston Gallery of St Albans Museum + Gallery, the exhibition focuses on Begum’s geometric work to create a remarkable spatial and visual experience. Presenting sculptures, paintings and screenprints, newly created relief works and a panel painting installation, the exhibition poignantly brings the acclaimed artist’s work to her former home city and celebrates the success of an alumna of the University. As a young artist she studied her foundation course at University of Hertfordshire, which she has said had a pivotal impact on her in ‘opening up’ ideas and disciplines. Rana Begum, says: “Solo exhibitions are always exciting but this one has significant meaning as, after many years of long-haul destinations, my family and friends from my home city where I grew up, can now come and see my work.” From January, Begum will take over the stunning Assembly Room with an awe-inspiring, vast sitespecific installation No. 670 Mesh. CHRISTIAN DIOR, CHRISTIAN BÉRARD. JOYFUL MELANCHOLY, A NEW BOOK PUBLISHED BY GALLIMARD

T

his joint biography of Christian Dior and Christian Bérard’s sets us out into a fascinating period, from inter-war Paris to the post-war Café Society. In a munificently detailed book published by Editions Gallimard in collaboration with Dior, Laurence Benaïm looks back at the sincere ties uniting Christian Bérard and Christian Dior. On the surface, everything seems to oppose them: the extravagant, ultra-sensitive Bébé contrasts with the discreet, mysterious Monsieur Dior. Yet it was love at first sight. “All of Dior is in Bérard, all of Bérard is in Dior. This book is not a two-headed biography — it is a meandering in the heart of a history haunted by dreams, affinities, and secrets sewn in the lining of vanishing time.” Laurence Benaïm* In the 1930s, Christian Dior, then a partner in the Pierre Colle gallery, exhibited the young Bérard’s paintings alongside those of Dalí, Picasso and Matisse. A few years later, when he opened a house in his own name, Christian Bérard gave him

28 JANUARY 2024

his bountiful support. In return, the couturier entrusted Bérard with the decoration of his first boutique, Colifichets, on Avenue Montaigne. Christian Bérard advised him to adorn this initial setting in toile de Jouy – the celebrated signature-print and emblem of French savoir-faire, that would become an iconic Dior reference. “The seeming casualness brought the whole place to life,” Monsieur Dior wrote referring to the work of his friend, ”that arbiter of parties, of all elegance…”. The book Christian Dior, Christian Bérard. Joyful melancholy – sumptuously illustrated with works of art and precious photographs – brings to life the Paris of artists, from the Belle Epoque to the Liberation, from the Boeuf sur le toit to the post-war Café Society. Two destinies that respectfully echo and influence each other; two Christians, two men always brought together by their shared passions, art and beauty in all their forms. From page to page, they appear in the truth of their purest talent, between triumphs and doubts, promises and secrets. An ode to friendship and dreams. The book can be purchased at Dior boutiques in New Bond Street and Sloane Street, and also WHSMITH (£30), Amazon (£25), World of Books (£22) and Waterstones (£30). * French journalist, biographer and writer

‘SPIRIT OF INNOVATION’

officially the world’s fastest all-electric aircraft

R

olls Royce have announced that their all-electric ‘Spirit of Innovation’ aircraft is officially the world’s fastest all-electric aircraft, having set two new world records which have now been independently confirmed. The aircraft reached a top speed of 555.9 km/h (345.4 mph) over 3 kilometres, smashing the existing record by 213.04 km/h (132mph). In further runs at the UK Ministry of Defence’s Boscombe Down experimental aircraft testing site, the aircraft achieved 532.1km/h (330 mph) over 15 kilometres – 292.8km/h (182 mph) faster than the previous record. Both records have been officially verified by the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI), the World Air Sports Federation that controls and certifies world aeronautical and astronautical records. During its record-breaking runs, the aircraft, which is part of the UK Governmentbacked ACCEL or ‘Accelerating the Electrification of Flight’ project, also clocked up a maximum top speed of 623km/h (387.4mph) making it the world’s fastest all-electric vehicle. The aircraft was propelled on its record breaking runs by 400kW (500+hp) electric powertrain and the most power-dense propulsion battery pack ever assembled in aerospace. Rolls Royce worked in partnership with

As well as a stunning technical achievement, the project and world record runs provided important data for their future electric power and propulsion systems for all-electric urban air mobility (UAM) and hybrid-electric commuter aircraft. The characteristics that ‘air-taxis’ require from batteries, for instance, are very similar to what was developed for the ‘Spirit of Innovation’. Rolls-Royce has an incredible history of flying speed record attempts and breaking records, dating back to the Schneider Trophies of the early 1930’s. The speed achieved by test pilot and Rolls-Royce Director of Flight Operations Phill O’Dell in the ‘Spirit of Innovation’ was more than 213.04 km/h (132 mph) faster than the previous record set by the Siemens eAircraft powered Extra 330 LE Aerobatic aircraft in 2017. The Hub on Verulam

C

o-Founder of The Hub on Verulam Hannah Petrouis, was in the wedding sector of hospitality for 16 years before moving onto this project. Handy hey? With over 500 weddings under her belt, here are her top 5 tips on how to stay happy (and sane) throughout the wedding planning process.

the aisle, the list of tough conversations with close family members can be endless when it comes to weddings. Before you start planning, you need to know where you stand. So bite the bullet and bring it up, this will enable you to make better decisions for you and your partner from the outset and ease any stress caused by the build-up. Images: katieoneillphotography.co.uk / @contentwithkatie

Be realistic about what you can handle. There aren’t many people who can plan a wedding alone, on top of upkeeping their day to day lives, jobs, children etc. Most people will need help in some form, whether it’s from a professional, or family & friends. Before diving in, ask yourself: Do I have the energy and do I have the time? If the answer is no, seek help. At very least, lean on your suppliers wisdom, they do this all the time. Don’t rush into planning mode. After your engagement, relax for a while. Once planning starts, it starts, so use at least the first few weeks to celebrate and chill with your new fiance. Anyone who peppers you with questions straight away (is nuts,) can wait. Have difficult conversations with family members early on. Whether it’s about financial contributions, kids not being invited or who you’d like to walk you down 40 JANUARY 2024

Do I need a lasting power of attorney? Graham Hearnden, of Trust Matters Group in St Albans, warns about the dangers of not having lasting powers of attorney in place

A

s people are living longer, so too will there be an increase in the number of people expected to need to give a third party power over their affairs. Lasting powers of attorney (LPA) are legal documents that let you appoint one or more people —known as ‘attorneys’ — to help you make decisions or to make decisions on your behalf in the case of loss of mental or physical capacity. This must be set up before

that occurs, as once you’ve lost capacity it’s too late and only a deputyship is possible. It can take months to apply for deputyship once someone is unable to look after their own affairs, and the fees to apply can be costly. These can include solicitor fees to apply for deputyship, an assessment from a GP and fees to apply to the Court of Protection (£371). If the court decides your case needs a hearing, a further £494 is payable. In

some cases, you must also pay to set up a bond to insure against misuse of funds, which must be paid for annually. There’s also an annual ‘supervision fee’ to the Office of the Public Guardian (£320 per annum and, in the first year, an extra £100 assessment fee). The person authorised by the Court of Protection to handle your affairs on your behalf is not only unlikely to be who you would have chosen, but may even be a court official — who can charge every time they act for you. By contrast, once an LPA has been granted, it doesn’t need to be renewed. The LPA rules, introduced in 2007, have enhanced the protection offered and ensure people are of sound mind when they set it up. Those with dementia are particularly vulnerable to the theft or illegal use of their property, money or other valuables. Those without an LPA are powerless to

“There are two types of lasting power of attorney: property and financial affairs; and health and welfare”

intervene. The delay involved in obtaining deputyship could also cause serious harm as finances are left inaccessible for several months. It’s also not a solution for those needing help in managing their affairs to give PINs as this could jeopardise the parents’ ability to recover losses if the account is hacked with no LPA in place. There are two types of lasting power of attorney: property and financial affairs; and health and welfare. It’s important to note that existing enduring powers of attorney are still valid, but they only cover property and financial affairs. Trust Matters is able to deal with all the legal requirements surrounding the drafting of an LPA, including preparing your documents, liaising with the Office of the Public Guardian and registering your documents.

BALLITO BOMBSHELLS: A Tale of Silk and Steel

New Exhibition at St Albans Museum + Gallery

A

fascinating tale of silk and steel, Ballito Bombshells exhibition opens 20 October at St Albans Museum + Gallery, Hertfordshire, and tells the story of Fleetville’s Ballington Hosiery Mill that manufactured everything from delicate stockings to robust artillery shells between the 1920s and the 1960s. The free exhibition will run in the Keeper’s Galleries until 04 February. Inspiring and remarkable, Ballito Bombshells recounts the stories of its employees – from their rigorous work to popular social events at the mill – and charts the history of the factory itself. Visitors will be able to enjoy a selection of the striking designs that made Ballito so memorable, a rundown of the machinery used in production, and an insight into the company’s role in the Second World War. The name Ballito is believed to have originated from the company’s first hosiery mill in Ballington,

Tennessee. In the early 20th century, NewYork brothers Alexander and Charles Kotzin took advantage of the growing demand for silk stockings after the First World War and began importing the popular products to the UK. When new import duties threatened the profits of the new businesses, the duo acquired an old factory in Fleetville, Hertfordshire, and technicians were brought over from Tennessee to install machines and train new employees. The Ballington Hosiery Mill opened in August 1925 and, within four years, was manufacturing more than 14,000 pairs of stockings each month. Farhana Begum, Arts, Tourism, Heritage and Culture Manager at St Albans City and District Council and Head of St Albans Museums, says: “Ballito Bombshells is a compelling exhibition that gives us an insight into life at the Ballington Hosiery Mill like never before. It is an exciting opportunity to understand more about the industrial history of St Albans and its role in the war, as well as the varied lives of its employees. “We are thrilled to showcase Ballito’s intriguing story in our Keeper’s Galleries at St Albans

Museum + Gallery, which offers visitors a fitting stage on which to enjoy this historical and delightful tale.” The social life at Ballito was an integral part of the employee experience. In the early 1930s, the company created a social hall and canteen that became so popular that the facilities were expanded a few years later to accommodate space for more clubs and activities (and underground shelters as war loomed on the horizon). Some of the most popular social sessions were boxing and Saturday-night dancing, including the ‘Ballito Tango’- a dance specially created by M. Pierre of the famous Regent Street School of Dancing. Employees spoke so highly of the activities that locals began to join in. By the 1950s, Ballito had even acquired its own sports fields in St Albans. The Fleetville factory was commandeered in 1939 as part of the war effort. Hosiery machines were pushed aside to make room for larger machines that would facilitate the creation of shell casings. Two-shift – day and night – working days were introduced to ensure a constant level of production. The premises would also go on to manufacture parts for de Havilland Mosquito and Tempest fighter planes as well as radar equipment. A small group of employees maintained some stocking production for the home markets. Sarah Keeling, curator (post-medieval to contemporary) at St Albans Museum + Gallery, says: “A history so close to home, it is an honour to be sharing the story of the Ballito and their crucial and varied roles within the company and community. It’s a story of hard work, determination and glamour which Fleetville and St Albans should be proud of. I encourage everyone to discover more at the exhibition starting at the end of October.” 46 JANUARY 2024

“The social life at Ballito was an integral part of the employee experience” Import pressures and shareholder control got the best of Ballito in 1967 when Courtauld bid successfully for the company. Unfortunately, Courtauld was only keen to buy the Ballito name and reputation, the reality of its veiled promise to maintain the manufacture of hosiery in the area. The Ballito management had to announce the high level of redundancies to its employees. Ironically, Marconi Instruments – the business responsible for the assembly of radar equipment at the Fleetville factory during the war – went on to lease space in the factory to expand its production line. Lynn Cunningham, Lead Councillor for Museums, says: “This is a fascinating project that celebrates the story of a hugely successful and historical brand and shines the spotlight on those behind it. Once again, the team at St Albans Museums + Gallery has curated an incredibly insightful and interesting exhibition that the community of St Albans and beyond will thoroughly enjoy.”

ROYAL REVIEW:

How Kate upped her fashion and beauty game in 2023 The Princess of Wales stepped out in some incredible outfits last year. By Katie Wright.

A

s the royal family’s foremost fashion icon, the Princess of Wales is often in the sartorial spotlight. Aided by assistant Natasha Archer, Kate has continued to evolve her style in recent years, and has impressed royal watchers with her outfit choices in 2023. “Over the last year Catherine, Princess of Wales, has proven she’s equally adept at showstopping glamour for state occasions and formal events, and casual elegance when carrying out charity engagements,” says Caroline Young, fashion writer and author of The Fabulous Frances Farquharson: The Colourful Life of an American in the Highlands. “There may be rules for royal dressing, but Catherine’s style isn’t conservative – she embraces fashion-forward garments from both the high street and haute couture in bursts of colour. “Rather than just keeping it muted with beiges and blues, she often favours warm tones, such as pinks, reds and yellows.” Plus, the royal’s glam squad always ensure her hair and make-up are perfectly suited to her outfit and the occasion. Here, we look back at some of Kate’s most memorable fashion and beauty moments of 2023… 68 JANUARY 2024

McQueen gown On the Bafta red carpet in February the Princess donned a reworked version of a flowing white Alexander McQueen gown she wore to the 2019 awards, with the corsage on the shoulder replaced with a flowing cape detailing. Kate teamed the dress with black opera gloves and clutch bag, finishing her look with a pair of £17.99 statement earrings from Zara, which instantly sold out. “Kate is keen to prove that you can wear the same dress twice,” Young says. “She’s often described as the queen of recycling in the way she re-wears old favourites, which fits with the environmental ethos that she champions.” Erdem suit Attending the Commonwealth Day service at Westminster Abbey in March, Kate chose an elegant navy skirt suit with delicate floral embroidery from one of her long-time favourite designers, Erdem. She paired the two-piece suit with a midnight blue saucer-style hat and had her hair styled in a chic updo that beautifully complemented the ladylike ensemble. Coronation outfit Kate was praised for her stunning outfit at the most high-profile royal event of the year, the

coronation of the King. She wore a deep blue Royal Victorian Order mantle edged in scarlet, over an Alexander McQueen embroidered ivory silk crepe dress. In a break from tradition, she decided not to wear a tiara, instead choosing an intricate silver headpiece by Jess Collett x Alexander McQueen, with her long brown locks twisted into a neat updo. Spotty dress Kate has worn trendy London-based designer Alessandra Rich several times in the past few years, including for her appearance at the Order of the Garter service in June. The vintage-style spotty white dress, teamed with a navy and white feather-trimmed hat, drew comparisons to Diana, Princess of Wales, who wore a similar outfit to Royal Ascot in 1988.

were twisted into a braided bun which celebrity hairdresser Edward James described as a “polished Princess Leia” look, referencing the Star Wars character. Purple suit Opting for another sharp suit for the Shaping Us National Symposium in November, the Princess donned a bright purple two-piece by British designer Emilia Wickstead. Young admires Kate’s bold, on-trend look: “Throughout 2023 she’s particularly favoured block-coloured blazers and trousers in various hues, a look that is smart and on-point but also lends a more casual, approachable feel.”

Pink dress “In June, Kate was on-trend with the blush ‘Ahana’ dress by Beulah worn when she opened the Young V&A,” says Young. “With its tailored bodice and floaty skirt, it was the hit dress of the summer, but she got there first, having worn it two years before, at Wimbledon.” The Princess had her glossy locks styled in bouncy waves for the occasion. Balmain blazer For her first appearance at Wimbledon 2023, Kate – who is patron of the All England Lawn Tennis Club – chose an Eighties-style mint green blazer by glamorous French fashion house Balmain. Tapping into the Wimbledon whites theme, she teamed the double-breasted jacket with a white pleated maxi skirt and court heels. Blazer and twisted braid On a visit to the Orchard Centre in Sittingbourne in September, the Princess rewore a favourite Zara blazer, but switched up her look with a bold new hairstyle. BABY DIOR

Spring 2024 Collection

F

or the Baby Dior Spring 2024 line, Cordelia de Castellane pays a wonderful tribute to all the world’s mothers. A celebration of this precious bond and of those powerful women who, every day, strive to provide a surge of life, of joy: a cocoon of gentleness. Reflecting the many facets of motherhood, this three-part narrative reveals a first – entitled Madre Dior – inspired by the creative energy of Mexico. In a captivating play of contrasts, looks are created on which delicate patterns and vibrant colors blossom. Returning to her literary explorations, Baby Dior’s Creative Director also chose to honor Marcel Proust’s mother, whom the author fondly remembers in the first volume of his iconic novel, À la Recherche du Temps Perdu*. A series of models are dressed in velvet or tulle, enhanced by touches of glittering sequins, while some outfits are adorned with a large bow, a subtle reference to the Odette dress designed by Christian Dior for the Dior haute couture autumn-winter 1953-1954 collection. This typically Parisian elegance is also reflected in the Madeleine universe – evoking the foundingcouturier’s mother – and revisits the House’s symbols, from the emblematic toile de Jouy – reinterpreted in a Toile de Jouy Paris print – to the CD Diamond and the timeless Bar jacket. An experience imbued with tenderness and poetry, a promise of unforgettable moments of complicity. *Published in 1913 by Editions Grasset. The Collection can be purchased at: House of Dior, 160-162 New Bond Street, W1 Tel: 0207 172 0172; dior.com

YOUR PERFECT LIPSTICK SHADE ACCORDING TO YOUR STAR SIGN Astrologists suggest the tones that match your traits. By Katie Wright.

ARIES For the sign ruled by Mars, aka the red planet, bright reds and fiery oranges complement Aries’ confident personality. “These warm hues symbolise their dynamic spirit and help them command attention wherever they go,” says intuition coach and psychic Julie Chandler. “Whether it’s a classic red lipstick that exudes power or a statement orange that represents their zest for life, Aries can rock these shades with their natural charisma.”

O

ur star sign can tell us a lot about our personality type and preferences in life, and when it comes to make-up, there’s one product that epitomises one’s style more than any other: lipstick. From matte to gloss and bright to neutral, the possibilities are endless, but what lip look is best according to astrology? We asked Zodiac experts for their advice on the lip shades that suit each sign…

80 JANUARY 2024

“A grounded and peaceful sign, Taurus favours a subtle aesthetic,” says celebrity psychic and astrologer Inbaal Honigman, which is why she recommends a neutral, brown-toned lip colour. “Burnt caramel is a gentle and warm shade, which illustrates the cosy outlook of those born under the sign of the bull. Luxury styling will be enhanced by a rich satin finish.”

GEMINI For the social butterflies of the zodiac, a versatile but vibrant pink or coral will suit their playful nature. “These shades capture their youthful and

lively energy while allowing them to express their fun-loving side,” Chandler says. “Whether it’s a playful hot pink or a subtle coral, Geminis can effortlessly pull off these shades and add a touch of flirtatiousness to their look.”

CANCER For homebody Cancerians, it’s all about simplicity and feel-good vibes. “Cancer likes to get made-up with the minimum of fuss, and will choose a balmy lip tint for ease of application and a fuss-free feel,” says Honigman. “Gentle peach hues fit the loving vibe of those born under the sign of the crab.”

LEO It won’t come as a surprise to glamour-loving Leos that bold hues are best. “A shade that complements their radiant and passionate aura is a deep, rich burgundy or a luxurious, vibrant plum,” Chandler says. “These shades reflect their regal presence and help them command attention wherever they go.”

VIRGO “Neat and organised, Virgos enjoy a natural look, letting their innate beauty shine,” says Honigman, who recommends a lightweight lip tint or stain, rather than a full-coverage lipstick. “A fresh shade of pretty pink, such as rosewood, suits the practical style of those born under the sign of the virgin.”

LIBRA Representing their harmonious nature, a subtle ‘your lips but better’ look suits Librans. “A shade that complements their gentle and romantic aura is a soft, rosy pink or a warm, peachy nude,” Chandler says. “These shades reflect their innate elegance and help them create a sense of balance and poise in their appearance.”

SCORPIO “Intense and dramatic, Scorpio appreciates individuality in styling, with a bit of an edge,” says Honigman, which is why she suggests rich berry tones with a matte or satin finish. “Burgundy lips in berry shades are the perfect balance of shade and sweetness for those born under the sign of the scorpion.”

SAGITTARIUS Free-spirited Sagittarians should embrace their

adventurous side with an eye-catching lip colour. “A shade that complements their bold and fiery energy is a vibrant berry or a fiery orange-red,” says Chandler. “These shades represent their adventurous spirit and help them make a statement wherever they go.”

CAPRICORN “A business-minded and focused sign, Capricorn practically invented power dressing and powerful make-up,” Honigman says, and it’s got to be “luxe not dupes” when choosing a statement red lip. “Nononsense lips in the reddest of reds scream ‘strength’ for those born under the sign of the sea-goat. They’ll favour a matte finish for that upmarket feel.”

ELIZABETH ARDEN BEAUTIFUL COLOR LIQUID LIPSTICK LACQUER BURGUNDY, £14.15, AVAILABLE FROM ESCENTUAL.

VIEVE MODERN MATTE LIPSTICK MUSE, £23, AVAILABLE FROM VIEVE

AQUARIUS One might expect unconventional Aquarians to rock something distinctive such as metallic lilac, but Chandler recommends a more minimalist approach: “A clear gloss, with its natural shine and subtle enhancement, can go a long way in showcasing an Aquarius’ unique and creative personality. “It’s a reflection of their ability to stand out effortlessly without relying on bold colours. The clear gloss adds a touch of freshness and minimalism, allowing their natural beauty and individuality to shine through.”

GUERLAIN ROUGE G SATIN LIPSTICK REFILL ROSEWOOD, £22.10, AVAILABLE FROM ESCENTUAL

PISCES “Dreamy and romantic, Pisces aspire to emulate the feels and looks of storybook characters and leading ladies of their favourite love stories,” Honigman says. That’s why only a rosy pink will do: “Enduring and kissable, a romantic peony shade will suit those born under the sign of the fish. A glossy finish will give Pisces that otherworldly quality that they appreciate.”

2023: The Year of the

ECLECTIC INTERIOR J

ust where has the time gone... One moment we’re still basking in the glow of Salone del Mobile and now, the year is over and it still feels like we’re still waiting for The Big 2023 Interiors Movement to emerge – this isn’t how it’s supposed to be! Or is it? Sure, there have been some growing themes throughout the year, but unlike before they exist either happily merging into each other, the dividing lines broken down, or completely contradicting each other. And that’s what 2023 has all been about, the throwing away of the rule book, and the uninhibited celebrating of good design, whatever it may be, and whatever it may sit next to in the home. Eclecticism, doing whatever we like in our interiors, was the decorating motto of 2023. We’ve seen the rise of ‘The home as the sanctuary’ in recent years – this year it’s more like ‘My home is just for me’. Like that chair? Take it. Like that table? Take it. They don’t go together? That’s ok, it’s all about how they make us feel – if they summon that warm, fuzzy feeling in your chest, they belong in your dining room. It’s historic. It’s hyper-contemporary. It’s highgloss smooth. It’s heavy texture. It’s colourful. It’s maximalist. It’s iconic Scandi. It’s luxe. It’s laid back. Put all of the interior pieces you love into a big pot, mix them all together, and that’s 2023. Spaces became dynamic, personalised and free.

Interiors became about self-expression, each area a visual representation of who you are, design objects becoming strokes on an artist’s canvas. Beautiful objects stood in the home to be admired standalone or as part of the fuller exhibition. Colours danced, textures soared and materials intermingled. Styles, influences and ages fused. It’s wild, it’s calm, and yet it really makes sense. 2023 was the year of the Me Interior, the Do Whatever You Like Interior, the Embrace It All Interior. But there were a few signals along the way as to where we’re headed. Surfaces spanned got tactile, from the highlytextured to the mega smooth, with colours similarly extreme and high-definition, pigmentrich tones taking over. Scandi design took an unexpected twist, sofas went exploring and metallics got involved with it all. It was quite the year. In the closing moments of 2023, the echoes of such eclectic design resonate, leaving a lasting impression for the new interiors era, one where diversity and the celebration of unique aesthetics define the way we curate our spaces. Let us present the key materials and finishes from the mix that will guide us into the coming year...

COLOURFUL EXPLOSION: Dig out your kaleidoscopes and pop on your sunglasses because the pigment party isn’t over. 86 JANUARY 2024

“It’s historic. It’s hypercontemporary. It’s high-gloss smooth. It’s heavy texture. It’s colourful. It’s maximalist. It’s iconic Scandi”

Powerful, impactful colours have reigned this year and there’s no sign of a slowdown. Lead by the primary tones of vivid scarlet, rich ultramarine and radiant yellow with support from fiery orange, intense magenta and in-the-jungle green, the modern furniture designs of 2023 were soaked in saturation.

THE NEW NORDIC:

SUPER TEXTURES:

If you’re an aficionado of Scandi style, you always knew what you were going to get when adding to your collection – the highest quality materials, illustrious design names and classic, pass-down-the-generations-worthy design. OK – nothing’s changed in that regard, but this year Nordic furniture had a different feel, many pieces completely shaking off the past and creating brand new, original and innovative designs rather than the quiet subtleties we may be used to.

ADVENTUROUS SOFAS:

From exaggerated upholstery to extravagant finishes, this year we honed in on touch. Ridged markings were carved into solid materials and tailored into the soft to highlight their threedimensionality form a layer of shadows. Glass took a U-turn and went from the definition of smooth to hazy, distorted and uneven, taking on the look of frozen water and casting shadows that transform a room into something ethereal. Materials got loose, relaxing their yarns to become more tactile, plush or soft for a cosy cocooning feel as well as creating experimental juxtapositions alongside other textures.

The modern sofa has moved into the realms of indescribability – it’s something curved, something angled, something long, something compact, something with gaps in, something a bit hard... Furniture-wise, the sofa is the centre of the home. It’s the comfiest place to be, where everyone wants to sit, its where we unwind, its where we relax, it’s where we catch up, it’s where life happens. Our seating needs are growing – to engage with each other, to fit around corners beauty, to fit the extended family, to double as a work space, to create sculptural – and sofas have heard us.

Disco-ball-worthy spaces entered the contemporary design sphere this year with metallic accents edging indoors. It was a year that glittered, glistened and shone as playful and exuberant metallics graced platforms of all kinds: from the most up-to-date of living rooms to the catwalks of Dior, Chanel and Tory Burch, as well as stages stormed by Beyoncé, Taylor Swift and Harry Styles. From golden glints to silvery sheens, metallic accents in the home are enthralling and magical.

DAZZLING METALLICS:

“Powerful, impactful colours have reigned this year and there’s no sign of a slowdown.”

PANTONE COLOUR OF THE YEAR

P

antone have unveiled their Colour of the Year for 2024 as Peach Fuzz. Charlie Farrar, Creative Product Executive, at Naturewall, said: ‘Peach Fuzz is warm and optimistic, perfect for brightening up interiors. Fresh yet nostalgic, it can be used as a statement shade to create a kitsch feel or as a subtle pop of colour to invigorate contemporary spaces.’ Nicole Hussey, Creative Manager of funky beanbag brand rucomfy, said: “This is an interesting choice! It’s certainly a refreshing colour

92 JANUARY 2024

that could be paired with lots of different hues. “For us, we have previously struggled to sell this tone, so it will be interesting to see how it does next year. It will certainly complement our collections, such as “Secret Garden” Tara Rodrigues, award winning interior designer, founder of TR Interiors and winner of Channel 4’s £250,000 Big Interiors Battle, said: “A revival of peach is long overdue. Peach was once commonly used in interiors but as modernism spread, it lost its place in the contemporary home. “It’s a soothing warm colour and I love pairing

H OME & PROPERTY

it with rich dark hues of blues and greens to create elegant and bold schemes. It’s a great way to soften a scheme making a home feel warm and inviting. For those that don’t love pink, peach is a great compromise in a family home adding a touch of femininity without being overpowering. I’d mix peach into a contemporary kitchen or living room scheme for a warm pop of colour to elevate a space.” Victoria Yardley, founder of eco-paint brand Victory Colours, said: “It’s a lovely colour and we are seeing a lot of peachy hues at the moment, it is a very similar colour to our “The Donald” which has been top of our colour charts for weeks now. “We think it is a great choice. We have seen a huge trend towards peachy hues and terracottas in the past few months so this wasn’t an unexpected choice from Pantone. “Pantone’s 2024 Color of the Year, Peach Fuzz, heralds a serene shift in interior design trends. Its warm, soothing tones evoke tranquillity and connection to nature, aligning perfectly with ecoconscious living. As an eco-paint company, we celebrate this choice, offering eco-friendly Peach Fuzz-inspired hues that resonate with sustainable aesthetics. “This soft, earthy shade harmonizes effortlessly

with natural materials, encouraging eco-friendly interior design. Peach Fuzz can revitalise spaces, embodying a mindful approach to living. “Peach, with its gentle warmth and softness, evokes feelings of tranquility and comfort. It imbues spaces with a sense of approachability and serenity, fostering a welcoming ambiance. This versatile hue inspires a subtle optimism, creating an inviting atmosphere that soothes and uplifts, making any room feel cosy and inviting.” Textile designer Jan Constantine, of Jan Constantine, said: “Peach Fuzz is a really beautiful colour which feels so right for now. It exudes warmth and cosiness, feels safe and is the perfect back drop shade to saturate a room. Its soft tones work perfectly with other warm hues from the same side of the spectrum – pink, terracotta, orange, yellow and red. Peach Fuzz also works well as a dramatic contrast to black and/or cream, hinting back at the most iconic colours of the Art Deco movement. Zoe Eaton, Creative Director at Ohpopsi, said: “Soft and feminine, peach fuzz lifts the spirits. A refreshing tone that will balance any interior space and work with a multitude of different palettes, it’s accessible, friendly and emits an abundance of warmth. It’s a really lovely positive tone and is a colour for everyone!

Natural Stone Everything The OG tile material, natural stone is a classic, and a complete superstar when it comes to sustainability. It’s about longevity and the wholelife carbon impact natural stone tiles have on the planet – typically very little. Natural stone tiles – slate, marble, limestone, terracotta and the such – last the course in every respect. They’re solid, they’re sturdy, they won’t let you down, and they always, always look good. Timeless is the word, and once laid, they can stay in place for a lifetime and longer. Ultimately, natural stone tiles are there to make a stand to throw-away culture, so lay them on floors, run them up walls and take them to your garden with planet-friendly pride.

Our Head of Creative, Grazzie Wilson, takes a look at her top picks...

Our Recycled Reform Collection 36 tactile tiles make up our game-changing Reform collection, all made from 60% recycled stone content AND, to make them more sustainable still, in a carbon-neutral factory. These are double-

whammy do-good tiles. They were soon snapped up by the likes of planet-conscious fashion brand Rixo who used two pastel Reform tiles in a chequerboard across their flagship store in London. Three sizes, 12 shades, and ready to be used across walls and floors, Reform is proof that sustainability looks and feels good. Planet-kind Pumice Terrazzo Tiles don’t get more chic than Italian-style terrazzo, whether the natural version of a porcelain ode to terrazzo like the Pumice collection. With two neutral versions to choose from, this micro collection contributes to the sustainability crusade by its makeup – 40% of which is from recycled materials.

Recycled Glass Tiles from Brasserie Porcelain, ceramic, natural stone – they’re the go-to materials you first think of in the world of tiles. But don’t go forgetting the underdog – glass tiles. Our Brasserie glass tiles are crafted not just from any glass, but recycled glass, meaning there’s no demand on the planet for extra materials to be sourced or formed, making use of what’s already out there and breathing new (and beautiful life) right back into it. Hexagonal mosaic tiles that are richly colored and that glimmer gorgeously on walls and floors? YES PLEASE. Rich and Reclaimed Terracotta Terracotta has to be one of the earthiest tiles out there. Already doing good by being a natural stone tile, to tile with terracotta is to already tread sustainable steps, but why not go one better? Enter reclaimed terracotta tiles. We’ve got two going on in our collection right now – the Antique Burgundy 100-year-old reclaimed French terracotta tiles and the Pavers reclaimed terracotta parquet and brick tiles. Every tile is completely unique and rich in stories as much as colour. Proper Good Intentioned Paint Stepping away from sustainable tiles for a moment, we couldn’t write on the topic without touching on the other string to the Ca’ Pietra bow – our planetfriendly paint range, Proper Good Paint. 44 serene shades to use across any and every room, they tick every sustainable paint box from being completely water-based and containing mega low VOCs (paint that contains high VOC levels can emit them for up to five years after being applied) to help improve air quality in and outside your home. WALL MURAL TRENDS

Fake it with marbellous textures If you’re here for an easy (yet glamorous) life, then you’ll be pleased to know that Wallsauce predicts customers will be fakin’ it in 2024! Marble is a timeless look – and an expensive one… Luckily, Wallsauce has the murals to help you achieve this. From traditional marble designs to colourful, fluid designs, there’s a plethora of designs for you to choose from.

C

reators of custom-made wallpaper murals, Wallsauce has rolled out its predictions of the wall mural trends for 2024. From jungle vibes to fakin’ it with marble, there will be a mural for every home this new year. Wallsauce has a wide range of trending wallpapers ideal for sprucing up any room. Whether decorating your bathroom or your hallways, its stunning collections are ideal to complement a vast range of interior styles. The jungle trend is here to stay The jungle trend quietly appeared on the scene a couple of years ago, and it rapidly came into our homes during lockdown. We surrounded ourselves with as much nature as possible whilst confined to our homes to keep ourselves connected to the outdoors. Over this time, we have seen customers adorn their walls in vibrant jungle designs, but over the coming year, we predict customers will tone down the colour and opt for a more natural colour palette.

98 JANUARY 2024

Beige will remain the chosen colour palette After a few grey years, beige made its way in 2023. Wallsauce predicts the neutral colour palette shall remain for some. Mural choices for this palette are predicted to include beautiful florals along with concrete effects. Beige is a great base colour, so opting to add splashes of colour at a later date won’t cost you a new scheme. wallsauce.com

ABOUT

TIPS

I offer a friendly and approachable interior design service dedicated to creating interiors that embody my clients unique needs and dreams. Providing interior design that will stand the test of time, ensuring that each home is not just beautiful but also functional. I work closely with my clients providing a personal and adaptable service, building great relationships and often working with clients on numerous projects. I believe that great interior design is not simply about aesthetics, expertly done, it enhances the quality of people’s lives and transforms a home into a space which promotes feelings of well-being and tranquility. I work alongside highly skilled craftsmen and contractors to ensure the that the design production process runs accurately and efficiently.

Lighting plays a crucial role in setting the mood and ambiance of a space. Many people underestimate its importance and overlook the potential it has to transform a room. I often use down lights to highlight the features in a room, for example: fireplaces, artwork, mirrors, window treatments, tables etc alongside the use of chandeliers, pendant lights, lamps and wall lights which creates different layers of light. To ensure the design reaches its full potential, the lighting should be designed at the very beginning of a project before the electrical first fix. Adequate storage is essential for maintaining a clutter free and organised living environment. I use built in cabinets, shelving, and multifunctional furniture that can maximise a space whilst keeping your possessions neatly stored away. By considering these often forgotten tips when transforming your home you can create a more functional, organised, comfortable living space that meets your specific needs and preferences. Additionally, focusing on timeless design elements and avoiding short lived trends can contribute to the longevity of your designs. By selecting classic colours, materials, and furniture pieces, you can create interiors that won’t easily go out of style. This approach allows clients to enjoy their spaces for years to come without feeling the need for frequent updates or renovations. Please get in touch for a complimentary consultation.

WALLPAPER IN KITCHENS & DINING ROOMS

Wallpaper is a wonderful way to inject personality into a room. Here is a selection of stunning kitchens and dining rooms, all beautifully papered with Divine Savages, proving there is no need to shy away from colour and pattern in more traditionally functional spaces.

Metallic Pops Let the wallpaper shine by picking out its core colour of the wallpaper for the painted cabinetry & trimwork. The closer the colour match, the stronger the impact and the metallic pattern will pop. Bonus points for matching the metals of hardware and kitchen fixtures like the brass tap and sconces. Tell A Story This playful print features mischievous felines stalking unsuspecting budgies - a wallpaper inspired by designer Tom’s love of the classic chase scenes in early animation. Affectionately named Bye Bye Birdie! it’s the very essence of the words divine and savage. Deco On The Ceiling Kitchens often have limited wall space due to cabinets, so if you need to get your pattern fix in, the ceiling is the way to go. Vibrant Art Deco influenced wallpaper adds a sultry decadence to complement the green cabinets. One Wall Wonder With just one wall to decorate in this kitchen, it’s the perfect place to use wallpaper. The large pattern has the power to transform the whole

room, but with limited space to cover, it comes at a fraction of the cost. Maximalist Pattern Clash Make a statement by pairing a playful print on the walls with patterned chair cushions. Neutral But Make It Blue Our Crane Fonda wallpaper in Charcoal boasts intricate dark grey illustrations, but instead of using this dark tone as an accent, this designer has opted for a cool, neutral slate blue. All doors, windows, trim and even the fireplace are united together with this new-neutral, which frames the wallpaper pattern for a cohesive backdrop. Think Pink Pink isn’t one of the core kitchen colours, but it’s working on multiple surfaces here...the patterned wallpaper with matching upholstered chairs and a quiet pillow too. divinesavages.com
