The Last Laugh

The Eric Morecambe Centre, Harpenden, 26 – 27 July 2024

If you’re a fan of classic comedy, don’t miss The Last Laugh at The Eric Morecambe Centre in Harpenden on July 26th and 27th. In this brand-new play, three of Britain’s all-time greatest comedy heroes – Tommy Cooper, Eric Morecambe and Bob Monkhouse – meet in a dressing room. They are old friends, comedy colleagues and masters of their craft. Together they pass the time, discussing the secret of life, death, their trade and what it means to be funny… really funny!

A homage to three comedy legends, to their craftmanship and to laughter The Last Laugh is written and directed by the award-winning Paul Hendy. It is based on Hendy’s short film of the same name which won ‘Best Film’ at Manchester Film Festival, ‘Special Audience Award’ at Oxford Film Festival and ‘Best Comedy Drama’ at The Los Angeles Independent Film Festival.

The show stars local legend, Bob Golding as Eric Morecambe, Simon Cartwright as Bob Monkhouse and the hilarious Damian Williams as Tommy Cooper.

Writer and Director Paul Hendy said ‘I’ve always been fascinated by what makes something, or more importantly someone, funny, I wrote this piece to examine those very questions and to delve into the mechanics and intricacies behind the comedy. For me, and for many others, it seems, memories of watching these comedy greats on television as a family are seminal childhood memories. These heroes who made children, parents and grandparents all howl with laughter became gods to people like me embarking on a career in entertainment. I grew spellbound as I wondered what these three men with very different styles and approaches to comedy would say to each other about the pressure of always having to be funny… of always having to have the last laugh. As this year marks the fortieth anniversary of the deaths of great Tommy Cooper and Eric Morecambe, this play is my love letter to the golden age of comedy.’

We can’t wait to bring ‘The Last Laugh’ to the incredible Eric Morecambe Centre’ said Hendy, ‘It feels like it’s the perfect theatre for it’. the-emc.co.uk

LADYBIRD BOOK EXHIBITION FLIES HOME TO ST ALBANS

Until 8 September 2024

From Peter and Jane with Pat the dog and What to Look for in Summer to classic fairy tales like Chicken Licken and The Three Little Pigs – just one look at an iconic Ladybird book and you’re instantly transported back in time by the distinctive designs that captured the imagination and hearts of so many children.

‘The Wonderful World of the Ladybird Artists’ exhibition, which opened at St Albans Museum + Gallery on 10 May, uncovers the story of the talented artists who illustrated Ladybird books and recounts the fascinating history of the little Loughborough print business which became a giant in children’s publishing.

Visitors are greeted by a ‘Wall of Books’ showcasing just about every Ladybird book issued between 1940 and 1980 (around 500 books) and can leaf through over 200 shared books in a ‘Summer Meadow’ installation of ‘grassy’ rugs and comfortable beanbags and enjoy interactive games too.

Colourful and family-friendly, the exhibition is the brainchild of Ladybird book expert and curator, Helen Day who has spent more than 20 years collecting books and researching the company.

Launched in 2018, the exhibition has toured the UK, but it has always been Helen’s ambition to bring it home to St Albans where she was born. Helen’s parents were both teachers in St Albans, Helen went to Cunningham Hill primary school as a young child, worked in Oaklands College for many years and went on to teach English as a foreign language around the world. Helen now resides with her husband in Harpenden.

A Ladybird book chosen to feature in this exhibition specifically is Warwick The Kingmaker as it refers to the famous Battle of St Albans which took place on 22 May 1455 and traditionally marks the beginning of the Wars of the Roses in Britain.

Helen says: “I’m thrilled that the exhibition is coming home to St Albans. I’ll have a chance to show my friends, family, colleagues and students what’s been absorbing me over these years!”

Displayed in the Weston Gallery and showcasing an unparalleled collection of books, original artworks and artefacts, the evocative exhibition traces the interconnected work of the many talented illustrators and tells the Ladybird story itself over its ‘golden years’ from 1940 to 1975 and how the artists played an immeasurable role in the extraordinary success of the company in the 20th century.

Helen continues: “For many years now, I’ve been interested in the history of Ladybird books and in the artists who illustrated them. I began as a collector, but my interest soon broadened into a desire to understand better the social history of Britain that the books contain. Ladybird books illustrated many childhoods, and the Ladybird artists gave us an interpretation of the 20th century in bright colour and careful detail.

“Hundreds of books are made available for visitors to browse through and share and it’s always such a joy to watch the expressions of adults as they recall the images and the memories they stir from their childhood and of children as they discover the wonderful illustrations for the very first time.”

Visitors will be taken through different zones and themes including Nature and the

Environment, History, Fairy Tales, and Learning to Read, each exploring the story and work of different artists including photographs of the locations, families, friends and neighbours who inspired them, and looking at the moments in time they were capturing.

One artist to look out for is Martin Aitchison, who illustrated around 100 books for Ladybird from the early 1960s including the popular Peter and Jane series and many Fairy Tale books including Martin’s personal favourite commission, Gulliver’s Travels. Martin was the only Ladybird book artist Helen met in person and they became friends before he died in 2016.

Alongside the exhibition, there will be engaging activities taking place during the May half-term and summer holidays for families and adults to enjoy including Making a Model Ladybird, a Ladybird Trail and several Talks.

Catherine Newley, Audience Development Manager at St Albans Museums, says:

“It’s fantastic to bring this magical exhibition home to St Albans, where Helen would have enjoyed the books herself as a child. The iconic Ladybird covers and illustrations were central to their success, and we are delighted to host this extensive and heart-warming exhibition which is sure to evoke feelings of childhood nostalgia and times gone by.”

Naomi Campbell’s stylish life in layers as she celebrates 40 years in fashion at the V&A

Ahead of the V&A opening its multifaceted exhibition, NAOMI – we uncover the model’s most iconic layered looks. By Lara

The V&A is launching a new exhibition that explore the life and career of supermodel Naomi Campbell.

With a selection of her archival pieces, the exhibit, NAOMI, goes beyond fashion, diving deeper into Campbell’s layered career, activism and cultural reach.

Open to the public from June 22, it provokes impressive, sensitive and evocative stages of

Campbell’s life.

To celebrate, here are some of those moments embodied in iconic outfits, peeling back the layers of her life in looks.

VIVIENNE WESTWOOD TARTAN SUIT

Meeting on a Los Angeles photoshoot in 1992, Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss were among the founders of the Nineties supermodels. Campbell’s outfit pictured at the end of London Fashion Week perfectly encapsulated how many layers there were to come of the young model.

Against Moss’ fairly reserved monochromatic look, Campbell’s overlapping tartan suit paired with ultramarine accessories and a hot pink feather boa were emblematic of the 23-year-old’s rebellious and carefree spirit.

NEWSPAPER AND DOLLAR BILLS DRESS

From then on, there was no stripping back for Campbell. The following year she modelled a

wedding dress made entirely of newspapers and dollar bills at the Harvey Nichols and Perrier New Generation Designers Show.

Perhaps the perfect choice for the rising star who was making leaps and bounds in her career whilst having a tumultuous relationship with the press. The abundance of ruffled newspapers were symbolic of how the mainstream press disguised what the model felt was the real Naomi.

HAIR FLICK AND FRINGE

Alongside copious clothes – wigs and extensions have been a part of Campbell’s canon throughout her career. Routinely shifting her image required flexibility; thus layering extensions over wigs and intense styling contributed to bald patches.

Telling the Evening Standard in 2017, “I lost a lot of [my hair] with extensions,” she revealed, “I am more careful and do things differently.”

Campbell dismissed the idea of black hair as a political issue, noting that “everybody in the world wears wigs… I do whatever the job calls for”. Campbell’s persevering attitude unveiled a deep insight into the model’s ambition.

FRILLS AND RUFFLES

Layering doesn’t mean covering up. In 2004, Naomi sported a sheer tiered mini dress at the Louis Vuitton party for the brand’s fall/winter collection. The bohemian ruffles and natural hair evoked a more laid-back countenance in Campbell. The neutral colour palette, eclectic accessories and sheer bodice foreshadow some of the model’s relaxed future looks.

DECONSTRUCTING HER IMAGE

The year 2017 saw Campbell taking a more structured and straightforward approach. Angularly layering suit trousers, skirts and formal lapels, this look symbolises Campbell’s ability to do it all. Integrating bold accessories in the form of fishnet tights and a bejewelled nose ring epitomised Campbell’s chameleon-like character. Whilst the layering seemed disjointed, she held it all together with her poised persona.

REMEMBERING HER ROOTS

Whilst mainly sporting simple silhouettes and muted hues, Campbell reminded the world that she is never predictable at the 2019 MET Gala. The model harked back to her feather boa frolics with

this pale pink Valentino gown – a piece featured in the coming exhibition.

Themed ‘Camp’ Campbell imbued the freedom to be oneself and bearing all through this sheerly layered look. Offering strength in the form of a bold feathered cape and fragility through lace tights, Campbell’s look was unapologetically authentic, revealing her true disposition.

SLEEK AND SIMPLE WITH DOLCE AND GABBANA

As Campbell enters her fifth decade, the model is leaning into bearing all. When walking for Dolce Gabbana FW 2024 show, she once again sported an all black outfit which experimented with textures and opacity through its use of lace, silk and mesh.

Using the most delicate of fabrics, this look evoked a vulnerability in Campbell, as the mourning veil almost disguised her face of true emotion. It seems the supermodel has become more comfortable in simple silhouettes and monochrome palettes, as she continues to reveal more of herself, whilst always leaving a protective facade: in this case, one of a mesh veil.

THE CONNAUGHT MAYFAIR

unveils art installation by Alex Israel on Carlos Place

Until 14th August 2024

Legendary Mayfair hotel The Connaught has revealed an outdoor installation by American contemporary artist Alex Israel outside the hotel on Carlos Place.

The plexiglass sculpture, entitled ‘Watermelon Sugar’, forms part of Israel’s ‘Fins’ (2023) series, and marks the UK debut for the work. It coincides with a new exhibition, REMEMBR (2023), opening at Gagosian’s Davies Street gallery in London.

Israel is known for his exploration of the visual culture of Los Angeles, and the ‘Fins’ series is no exception. By transforming the familiar surfboard fin into a brightly coloured work of art, Israel invites the viewer to engage with the culture of surfing in a new and unexpected way.

The Connaught has stood as an emblem of discreet and authentic elegance since 1897, with a long tradition of craftsmanship. Israel’s contemporary artwork provides a striking juxtaposition to the traditional façade of the hotel, and has been crafted with meticulous attention to detail, resulting in an installation that is both playful and strikingly beautiful. The colourful piece is in situ for the public to enjoy at The Connaught until 14th August and coincides with a new exhibition, REMEMBR (2023) at the Gagosian Davies Street Gallery in London.

For further information about Alex Israel please contact Ashleigh Barice at Gagosian: abarice@gagosian.com

Jumeirah Carlton Tower Launches NEW AFTERNOON TEA

Jumeirah Carlton Tower is delighted to announce its new afternoon tea in concept with Highgrove House & Gardens, the iconic gardens developed by His Majesty King Charles III. Launching on 14 June the afternoon tea will bring guests a seasonal, botanically inspired experience that champions sustainability and seasonality, in a celebration of the very best of British produce.

The new offering will further elevate Jumeirah Carlton Tower award-winning ‘A Tribute to Nature’ afternoon tea, taking inspiration from the most iconic of British gardens to deliver an experimental take on the classic British tradition in a sophisticated display of flavour. Working with locally sourced, seasonal produce, the afternoon tea will explore the best ingredients available in England through a carefully curated selection of imaginative dishes that pay tribute to the rich flavours of nature.

Over four decades, His Majesty King Charles III has devoted much energy to developing Highgrove House & Gardens into the innovative space it is today, with each of the interlinked series of gardens reflecting his own personal interests and enthusiasms. Jumeirah Carlton Tower has chosen Highgrove due to an admiration of His Majesty’s passion for the earth and consistent sustainability

efforts – values which the hotel deeply respects. The carefully curated afternoon tea menu incorporates a selection of classically British savoury dishes, such as a coronation chicken sandwich in a nod to the gardens’ royal connection, before delving into a unique scone experience with four flavours of scone, including a scone served with honey crumble and thyme sour cream to represent Highgrove’s work with bees. Guests will then enjoy a selection of pastries inspired by garden ingredients, including a rosemary lavender strawberry tart adorned with decoration made from strawberry wastage, before ending with three royal-inspired cakes – a Queen Victoria sponge favoured by Queen Camilla, His Majesty’s own favourite fruit cake, and a chocolate biscuit cake inspired by the late Queen Elizabeth II’s preferred sweet treat, which was also served at the wedding of the Prince and Princess of Wales. Gianluca Priori, General Manager at Jumeriah Carlton Tower says: “We are incredibly excited to be launching our new and exclusive afternoon tea inspired by His Majesty King Charles III’s Highgrove House & Gardens. Using seasonal produce and true British flavours and ingredients we are looking forward to welcoming guests and visitors into the hotel to experience this marvellous offering.”

Sarum Hall School Year 6 celebrate 11+ success

The 2024 leavers’ and the staff of Sarum Hall School have been celebrating this year and with good reason!

The Year 6 cohort of 24 pupils have achieved outstanding results, with every individual securing a senior school place on results day. Collectively, the pupils received over 100 offers to prestigious senior schools, including 21 academic scholarships and 5 music scholarships. Some of the schools they will be moving on to include Francis Holland School, Regent’s Park, St Paul’s Girls’ School, City of London School for Girls, Queenswood School, South Hampstead High School and Cheltenham Ladies College.

Sarum Hall School is rightly proud of its excellent academic results and established record of scholarship and examination success. Karen Coles, Headmistress of the school explains:

“We are a non-selective school which means we don’t choose children at 3+ based on their academic ability. To have such strong results at 11+ year on year is a real testament to the hard work of our pupils, the dedicated teaching staff, and the whole school community who have supported them to achieve so much”.

The 11+ process is renowned for the stress that it can cause for pupils and their families, with competition for senior school places at an all-time high. Sarum Hall School does all it can to reduce anxiety for families by ensuring that the parents are fully supported and guided through the process on an individual basis.

Miss Coles continues: “Our strategy is to speak with parents individually about the 11+ process,

“Sarum Hall School is rightly proud of its excellent academic results and established record of scholarship and examination success”

understand their expectations for their child, and to let them know what needs to happen and when, so that there are no nasty surprises.”

The process kicks off with an annual ‘Senior Schools Forum Evening’ for Year 4 and 5 parents where Heads from leading senior schools are invited to speak to parents on a variety of subjects such as ‘The perils of tutoring’, ‘how does learning change at senior school’, and ‘how can schools take classroom theory into real life’. This is followed by an opportunity for parents to meet Heads and senior members of staff to ask questions and get a feel for how different schools operate.

From here the Headmistress personally oversees a series of individual parent meetings to guide them through the 11+ process, making recommendations and suggestions to find the right senior school for each individual. This hand-held approach continues until the pupils’ transition at the end of the Summer Term. Miss Coles continues: “Finding the right school for each individual is so important. We want each of our pupils to be happy in their senior school, whilst also achieving their personal best. One can’t happen without the other”.

As well as preparing parents, the pupils are wellprepared by the school too. Examination practice comes as standard, and they are also supported through the interviewing process with dedicated practice sessions with an independent interviewer.

“The School offers a strong and varied curriculum masterminded and led by Deputy Head (Academic and Innovation), Mr Chen Lee, who works closely with all staff to ensure teaching excellence throughout the school”

The School offers a strong and varied curriculum masterminded and led by Deputy Head (Academic and Innovation), Mr Chen Lee, who works closely with all staff to ensure teaching excellence throughout the school.

In addition to the strong curricular ethos, the School also provides first-rate pastoral support, led by Deputy Head, Ms Bev Gayton. The School highlights its Golden Values of: Kindness; Courage; Respect; Honesty; Fairness and Resilience, as underpinning all life at School. Miss Coles is keen to point out that it’s not all about academic success at Sarum Hall School: “Most children at the age of 11 won’t have come anywhere near finding out what they are good at yet. At Sarum Hall School we are determined to ensure that every pupil embodies our Golden Values in everything they do. If we can ensure that each pupil has a positive attitude and wants to embrace life and all it has to offer, then we have done a good job. The rest is added bonus.”

The pupils themselves have been enjoying their final weeks at prep school before they move onto their senior school. They enjoyed a recent trip to Osmington Bay for outdoor adventures which included zip-wires, high-wire climbing, a giant swing and kayaking! Now they are working on a STEM project involving stomp rocket launches and designing and building racing cars to be fired across a track. And then there is the muchanticipated final show to look forward to as well, which this year is Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

Miss Coles concludes: “As we launch our pupils into the next chapter of their lives, I wish them nothing but luck and happiness in their futures. Each and every one of them deserves nothing less.”

Independent day and boarding school, St Margaret’s, recently delivered an incredible Expressive Arts Showcase for local parents at the Radlett Centre, a performing arts theatre in the village of Radlett. The event was a wonderful opportunity for the local Herts pupils to perform in front of a live audience and showcase their amazing creative talents. The pupils delighted the audience with several dramatic performances across music, drama and dance. Exhibiting the very best of the Expressive Arts Faculty at the School, visitors to the Radlett Centre were also treated to a stunning pupil art exhibition in the foyer.

The art department at St Margaret’s School has gone from strength to strength over recent years with many of its photography pupils gaining some of the highest grades in the last academic year. With considerable investment in its arts facilities and the addition of dance this academic year, pupils have been given multiple opportunities to join troupes and participate in high level competitions across the country.

Lara Pechard, Head at St Margaret’s School commented, “The Radlett Centre is such a fantastic local venue and it was wonderful to witness such a display of young talent. Our pupils have worked tirelessly perfecting their performances, giving the audience a chance to relive some of our most memorable moments within the performing arts, including our production of Les Misérables last December. The

St Margaret’s School Stages Stunning Expressive Arts Showcase in Radlett

The event was hosted by St Margaret’s alumna, Nicola Bonn, broadcaster, writer and award-winning podcast creator. Nicola has also presented on prime time radio stations and is a regular contributor on ITV1, she said, “It was a real honour to be asked to host the showcase and see just how much the students had achieved. The performing arts are so important and as a former St Margaret’s student, it’s so exciting to see that it is still such a huge part of school life. Not all young people who love music, dance and drama will go on to pursue them as careers but if my experience is anything to go by, a school that provides these opportunities is equipping its students with a confidence and passion that will be with them for life.”

Summer make-up trends you’ll want to try

With summer round the corner, freshen up your usual beauty routine with these new makeup trends, which are set to be popular this season. Celebrities are already hitting the red carpets with on-trend rosy doll cheeks and bold neon eyeliner, and beauty experts are on hand to show us how we can give the new looks a go at home.

Here are the summer make-up trends you’ll want to try for yourself…

BOLD NEON EYES

The top trend for this summer is neon, so don’t be afraid to go bold with your looks using neon eyeliner and eyeshadows. They are the look to go for this season, says Rachael Divers, resident makeup artist at Face The Future. She suggests using brightly coloured eyeliners or eyeshadows to create a striking winged liner or a bold wash of colour on the lids.

WET LOOK

Beauty lovers are opting for a fresh, dewy aesthetic and ‘glass’ or ‘wet’ skin is everywhere in summer

From bold neon eyes to sun-kissed skin, these are the beauty trends to look out for. By

2024, says beauty expert Hayley Walker, a make-up artist for Justmylook. “This look can be achieved using cream, liquid and glossy formulas that create a dewy glow. To heighten the look, moisturise and hydrate during your skincare routine before applying make-up to achieve a smooth canvas,” she says. “A hydrating mask or hyaluronic acid creams work perfectly for this. As part of your make-up routine to achieve a wet-skin look, opt for a serum, lightweight foundation that provides a moisture boost and a smooth, natural-looking finish. A liquid highlighter is useful here as it enhances a dewy, luminous finish.” The look aims to create a glowing, luminous complexion, leaving you with a wet, glass appearance.

SUN-KISSED

The minimal make-up sun-kissed look is a musttry for the summer, with many opting for a natural,

MODEL USING ICONIC
LONDON INSTANT
SUNSHINE BRONZING DROPS, £22

bronzed finish. Moisturising and applying SPF are essential to create a soft, fresh-faced look and Walker advises to opt for a lightweight serum foundation to ensure a natural-looking base, avoiding full-coverage, matte-based products. “Tinted moisturisers work well for this look for a minimal, bronzed finish. Apply cream blusher to enhance the natural, no-makeup appearance, imitating sun-kissed cheeks. Opt for gloss or lip balm instead of lipstick here and finish the look with a hydrating setting spray.”

SMOKEY EYES

Grunge is back for the summer and you can make a statement with a bold look by adding dark eyeshadow into your make-up routine. Divers shares that “lived-in liner” is gaining popularity, with smudged and smokey eyeliner looks adding an effortless edge to any make-up style. Walker

tells us how to get the aesthetic by carefully blending dark eyeshadow from the outer corner of your eyes into the crease. “Blend this well to your preferred intensity; remember to be bold with this look. Next, apply an eyeliner, which can be liquid or pencil. Start from the outer corners of your eye and work your way inward. This will enhance the look, deepening the smokey effect. Finish the look with mascara.”

DOLL BLUSH

Doll-like rosy pink cheeks are trending this summer and Walker shares how you can achieve the look. “You can perfect this look using cream or matte blush, however, I recommend opting for a cream-based blush to create a smooth, fresh-faced finish. Apply a light layer of pink, rosy blush onto the apples of your cheeks to bring colour to your face. Enhance the look with a highlighter for a subtle shine effect.”

Boho Beauties

Last summer called quiet luxury to the forefront of fashion, with nautical stripes, raffia accessories and tailored linen populating both runways and high street stores.

However, with the highly anticipated Sienna Miller collaboration with M&S, it seems the polished prim and proper look is taking a backseat this summer.

It’s long been agreed that trends move in 20-year cycles, but with the rapid consumption of fast fashion, this gap seems to be closing. This is probably why it feels like only yesterday that we were emulating Kate Moss’ wellies and waistcoats.

Alongside the growing aversion to fast fashion, there has been a noticeable uptake in sourcing vintage this season, lending itself to the revival in printed maxis, layered and tiered tops and boho beads.

From revival on the runway to Sienna Miller’s return to the high street: here’s why boho is big right now and how to wear it. By

HERE ARE FIVE WAYS TO STYLE THE LOOK…

Boho beads and precious stones

Whilst Coco Chanel said before leaving the house take one thing off, boho-chic said put three things on. The secret to the nonchalance of bohemian style is through layering miscellaneous accessories and this season: bold beads. This summer, designers are letting the pendulum swing as long-line necklaces and sculptural stones make a comeback. Toe rings and colourful stones seen on the runway last season have seeped their way onto the high street, predicting an avalanche of stacked and statement jewellery this summer.

Clashing layers

Lace and linen

Two staple summer fabrics are lace and linen, they even sound light, these soft yet powerfully feminine fabrics are fundamental to a bohemian ensemble. Keeping you cool in extreme temperatures – lace frills and linen trousers never go a miss. Balanced with chunky jewellery and minimalist strappy sandals, they offer an easy and wearable boho look.

Statement embroidery

The idea of bohemia is to be unconventional, artistic and insouciant. So, combining eclectic pieces is integral to the look. Don’t worry if you’re not as confident as Helena Bonham Carter – an easy way to get started is through monochromatic layering that focuses on fabric over print. Try pairing an ecru structured jacket over a frilly cream top or a leather suede bag with a silk-satin dress. If you’re using one colour palette, such as creams and blushes, or blues and greys, combining clashing materials is an easy way to achieve chic bohemian nonchalance.

Boho chic often brings to mind blushed florals and paisley prints, but the overuse of these in the 2010s has left room for more interesting experimentation with print. Embellishment, embroidery and broderie anglaise are all distinct ways to add character to a laid-back look. From jackets to capes, embellishment can transform a simple look to an elevated statement.

Elevated denim

Boho-chic isn’t all floaty fabric – using structured denim can anchor an outfit, adding depth to an otherwise loose look. Skip straight-legged skinnies and experiment with wide-leg silhouettes featuring studded accessories. Pair with leather belts, ruffle tops and chunky sandals to create a 70s-inspired look.

REDEFINING TREATMENT FOR KNEE OSTEOARTHRITIS

We look at the cutting-edge injectable hydrogel that delivers long lasting, proven pain relief for knee osteoarthritis without surgery (1-4)

For many of the 8.5 million people in the UK living with knee osteoarthritis (OA),(5) life is hampered by constant pain, limited mobility, and difficulty with simple, everyday tasks. But there’s hope with Arthrosamid® – the first and only permanent injectable treatment that is proven to maintain a significant, long-lasting reduction in knee OA pain – even three years post treatment.(1-4) Experts are calling it a ‘game-changer.’

Sufferers delay seeking help for knee pain, assuming it’s an unavoidable part of ageing. But Arthrosamid® offers patients a new pathway. Unlike traditional treatments, it’s proven to offer respite from knee osteoarthritis with a single treatment, and without the need for surgery.(1-4)

Knee OA: common causes and treatments

Knee OA is a long-term condition where shockabsorbing cartilage is worn away, causing bones to rub together and the joint to become stiff, swollen, and painful. Despite OA being the most common type of arthritis and the fastest cause of disability worldwide,(6) the treatment area has seen minimal progression in the last 20 years. With so little known about the exact causes of knee OA, a permanent cure has yet to be discovered. Many sufferers find themselves in an ongoing cycle of treatments, such as painkillers, physiotherapy appointments and various knee joint injectables (eg steroids or hyaluronic acid). Despite providing some relief, the effects can often be relatively short-lived, leaving many fearing

Mr James Donaldson, an orthopaedic surgeon from the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore,

that knee replacement surgery is the only longterm answer.

The emergence of Arthrosamid®, however, has been hailed by leading clinicians as an exciting, first and only injectable hydrogel that has been proven(7) to help patients with knee osteoarthritis and offers a real alternative to surgery.

What the experts say

Mr James Donaldson, an orthopaedic surgeon from the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore, offering the Arthrosamid® treatment, says: “I’ve treated many patients with Arthrosamid® and have seen them experience significant reductions in pain, as well as improvements in their mobility, and overall quality of life.

“In contrast to other treatments, Arthrosamid® appears to be offering patients long-lasting respite from the pain and immobility of knee osteoarthritis and, in many cases, avoiding or delaying the need for surgery.”

How does Arthrosamid® work?

Arthrosamid® is a hydrogel made up of 2.5 per cent cross-linked polyacrylamide and 97.5 per cent water. Arthrosamid® combines with the synovial tissue in the knee to form a permanent scaffold,(8) and it’s this unique characteristic that provides a significant reduction in OA pain over a longer period(1-4) — with one single treatment.(7)

Move freely, live fully

Jeanne Zivoni is a keen gardener from Hampstead and has suffered from joint issues for many years

but noticed a real improvement since being treated with Arthrosamid®. “The chronic and persistent pain in my knee was starting to get me down and I was keen to look for an alternative to pain medications. I also wanted to help ward off the need for potential knee surgery, as I was concerned about the intensive recovery period necessary to get back to full strength and fitness.

“I decided to give Arthrosamid® a chance and, following a quick procedure with minimal recovery time, I was immediately impressed by the improvements in my pain levels and uplift in overall mobility. As someone who wants to remain fit, active and pain-free for many years to come, I’m confident I made the right decision which has given me a new lease of life!”

MODERN FLORALS TREND

Flowery prints don’t have to be predictable.

There’s a reason why the fashion set can’t resist bringing out the timeless print during the warmer months. Adding an appropriate dose of colour and interest to any look, there are countless ways to wear florals to make them modern and trendy.

CO-ORDS

Although florals are harder to style than more neutral prints such as stripes or polka dots, the beauty of a flowery print is that it can totally elevate your look in one simple yet timeless step.

Step out of your comfort zone and embrace the modern floral trend with one of these simple yet stylish outfit formulas that will serve you well all through the season.

Co-ords will look chic no matter what print or style you’re wearing, but they work especially well with florals. Rather than a predictable maxi dress for the summer, a co-ord gives a similar feel but with much more edge. Embrace the Gucci-esque style with a statement floral suit, or shop for some floaty trousers and a matching oversized blouse to look and feel cool in the warmer weather. Finish off the look with some neutral or plain accessories, like some black boots and a minimalist handbag, to let the print do the talking and to avoid making your outfit appear too busy.

CLASHING

One of the best ways to make florals look more modern and trendy is by clashing them. This is not a trend for the fainthearted, but when done right, it looks impossibly cool. Simply opt for two different floral prints in your top and bottoms and pair them together for a head-turning ensemble. To make the look feel intentional rather than just thrown together, ensure there are common colours between both items to create a sense of harmony throughout your outfit.

STATEMENT TROUSERS

If you’re new to the florals trend, one of the least intimidating ways to start off is with one statement

item, like trousers. Pairing bright floral trousers with a more minimalist top makes the trend wearable for everyday without being at all boring. If you usually wear jeans day-to-day, look for a blue floral pattern in a similar hue to your favourite denim to ease yourself in. This way, you can also be sure that your statement trousers of choice will fit in with the rest of your capsule wardrobe. Stick to the silhouette of trousers that makes you feel most comfortable and shop for a statement floral style in the same shape. This will help you to look and feel your best when embracing the floral trend.

SWIMWEAR

If you’re still reluctant to add florals into your everyday wardrobe, consider how floral swimwear can liven up your holiday outfit rotation. Less intimidating than investing in a full floral get-up, a floral swimming costume allows you to try out the trend in a subtler manner. Not only will it make a nice change from plain block-coloured swimwear, but floral prints will look even better in the summer sun. There are countless floral bikinis and swimming costumes available on the high street, so this is a way to experiment with the trend without breaking the bank.

5 OF THE BEST at Three days of design

It’s that time when the eyes of furniture fans around the world swivel north, as annual Danish design spectacular 3daysofdesign showcases the best and freshest interior ideas coming out of the Scandi nations and beyond. With renowned luxury behemoths sharing the spotlight with emerging talents, it’s where every Nordic name worth knowing gathers.

For its 11th year, the festival is bigger and bolder than ever. Enveloping Copenhagen’s shops, studios, streets and show spaces with refined and forward-thinking furniture as well as lighting, accessories, new materials and limited edition pieces in increasingly awe-inspiring exhibitions, it ignites a city-wide celebration of extraordinary design across 11 districts.

RFH COLLECTION - &TRADITION

A partnership between &Tradition and the Robin and Lucienne Day Foundation has led to the return of the RFH furniture series, five distinctive designs created for The Festival of Britain at London’s Royal Festival Hall in 1951 as part of Day’s first major furniture commission.

While the designs have been sitting pretty in the concert hall, foyers and public spaces of the iconic cultural venue for over 70 years, this is the first time some pieces are available to purchase, while others haven’t been available for decades.

ANAGRAM SOFA - VITRA

Based on the premise that everyday living has evolved past being focused on – and positioned around – the television and now needs to cater to an increasing array of activities, the Anagram Sofa by Swiss design studio Panter&Tourron was born. Created for its layout to be reinvented time and time again, this is a seating system deeply imbued with adaptability.

An ‘assortment of possibilities’ rather that a static object, Anagram is made up of a handful of modules and elements that can quickly and easily respond to daily needs, or lifestyles changes: from an exercise regime, sports final or cocktail hour to a house move or family resize. Oh, it’s ready for anything.

MONOLIT CHAIR - FRITZ HANSEN

Aesthetically in line with its namesake impressive stone structure, the characterful Monolit chair by Danish designer Cecilie Manz is composed of a wrap-around back rest shell which forms a protective and embracing wall around the sitter. Its sculptural and slender profile raises majestically from the floor, creating individual capsules of personal space that are both flexible and come-and-curlup-here comfortable. Small design elements highlight its refined status, such as the linear piping around the seat

“The characterful Monolit chair by Danish designer Cecilie Manz is composed of a wrap-around back rest shell”

which has a sharp, haute-couture feel in either full grain leather or coordinating with the upholstery, as well as the option for a contrasting inner colour (the outside remains mono-toned to emphasise its statuesque silhouette) and the hardy, horseshoeshaped metal foot.

EAVE SEAMELINE SOFA - AUDO COPENHAGEN

Winding and meandering into the contemporary home of tomorrow is the Eave Seamline sectional sofa; a wave of alluring upholstered contours characterised by curves, clean lines and customisation.

Composed of architecturally-inspired concave and convex forms, it’s made up of nine pieces –from corner modules to chaise longue segments and open sections – that are waiting to be neatly fitted together and playfully slide and curl their way around a room, reacting to its specific shape and needs.

SETTLE OUTDOOR COLLECTIONMUUTO

No matter where you are, come rain or shine – nestle into Settle, the latest result of Muuto’s collaboration with Norwegian design duo Anderssen & Voll. Erasing the boundary between indoor and out, the upholstered all-weather seating range – which includes a cosy lounge chair, a neat two-seater and a generous three-seater – brings the softness and comfort of the living room into the fresh air, and the lightness and sense of freedom imbued into outdoor furniture inside.

“Today, many of us live in a way that blurs the lines between interior and exterior. These spaces support each other. You can see that in design, as the distinction between indoor and outdoor furniture becomes less clear. We bring the comfort of indoors out with us. So, we designed a sofa and lounge chair for spending the best of times outdoors,” says Espen Voll. chaplins.co.uk

Couple buy turnkey show apartment at Newland Park

They say true love is at first sight and this was certainly the case when Colin and Sue May stepped inside the newly completed show apartment at Newland Park – a grand 200-acre development set around a historic Grade II Listed mansion house. First opened to visitors at a dedicated launch weekend, Mr and Mrs May took the opportunity to see for themselves the first phase of new homes released on the private gated development, where prices start from £675,000 for a two-bedroom apartment.

Colin May said: “We came across the development by chance one day. We saw a sign for the show apartment launch weekend and were immediately struck by the marketing around the size of the grounds at Newland Park and the privacy that came with it. From the moment we set foot in the show apartment we fell in love with the space and design so much we asked there and then if we could buy the whole unit outright and thankfully Comer Homes agreed.”

The dressed show apartment was set within a two-bedroom garden terrace unit in Gott Place, which has already proven highly popular. Expertly designed and curated by Comer Homes’ inhouse interior design team, the show apartment possesses a premium and highly refined interior flair, with handmade furniture created to deliver a final design that perfectly complements each room.

The couple were also enticed by the ample outdoor space, thriving parkland and expansive landscaped grounds found throughout the estate. They were especially pleased with the south facing aspect of their property, allowing them to fully enjoy and soak up the sun.

Colin commented: “We were blown away by the extensive grounds and grand 17th century mansion that overlooks the estate, it’s amazing to think we will be moving to a setting with so much history and heritage behind it! We’re also very excited about the plans for a flagship David Lloyd Health Club, which will provide us direct access to best-in-class leisure facilities, so there’s no excuse not to stay fit and active.”

The spectacular David Lloyd health & wellness club, which is scheduled to open in 2025, comprises a full size swimming pool, tennis courts and Racquets Club, multi-sports pitches, Padel courts

and tennis courts. There will also be a five-star spa, bar, restaurant and relaxation terraces.

Along with the impressive outdoor space, Colin and Sue were drawn to the ease of living Newland Park offers through a combination of practical and more prestigious facilities, ranging from private underground parking to transportation aid via a courtesy shuttle bus, operating exclusively for residents by bringing individuals to local commuter stations and popular shopping destinations nearby. Colin and Sue are eager to start exploring the picturesque Chiltern countryside and charming local villages that surround their new home.

The latest phase of new homes released at Newland Park comprise an exclusive collection of 22 two and three-bedroom apartments at Gott Place, an impressive contemporary take on a heritage style building. Prices for the Gott apartments range from £675,000 for a two-bedroom/two-bathroom with two large private balconies to £2 million for a spectacular three-bedroom/three-bathroom duplex with three spacious balconies and a sizeable private roof garden.

In addition to the Gott apartment launch, Comer Homes have revealed details of 10 grand homes within the Pankhurst Houses collection, which are set to fully launch in September. Prices for the three-bedroom semi-detached and terraced houses start from £1.275 million, with the generous 2,045 sq. ft. homes benefitting from spacious interiors, private driveways and expansive rear gardens. Vehicle electric charging points are available for each unit.
