The Last Laugh

The Eric Morecambe Centre, Harpenden, 26 – 27 July 2024

If you’re a fan of classic comedy, don’t miss The Last Laugh at The Eric Morecambe Centre in Harpenden on July 26th and 27th. In this brand-new play, three of Britain’s all-time greatest comedy heroes – Tommy Cooper, Eric Morecambe and Bob Monkhouse – meet in a dressing room. They are old friends, comedy colleagues and masters of their craft. Together they pass the time, discussing the secret of life, death, their trade and what it means to be funny… really funny!

A homage to three comedy legends, to their craftmanship and to laughter The Last Laugh is written and directed by the award-winning Paul Hendy. It is based on Hendy’s short film of the same name which won ‘Best Film’ at Manchester Film Festival, ‘Special Audience Award’ at Oxford Film Festival and ‘Best Comedy Drama’ at The Los Angeles Independent Film Festival.

The show stars local legend, Bob Golding as Eric Morecambe, Simon Cartwright as Bob Monkhouse and the hilarious Damian Williams as Tommy Cooper.

Writer and Director Paul Hendy said ‘I’ve always been fascinated by what makes something, or more importantly someone, funny, I wrote this piece to examine those very questions and to delve into the mechanics and intricacies behind the comedy. For me, and for many others, it seems, memories of watching these comedy greats on television as a family are seminal childhood memories. These heroes who made children, parents and grandparents all howl with laughter became gods to people like me embarking on a career in entertainment. I grew spellbound as I wondered what these three men with very different styles and approaches to comedy would say to each other about the pressure of always having to be funny… of always having to have the last laugh. As this year marks the fortieth anniversary of the deaths of great Tommy Cooper and Eric Morecambe, this play is my love letter to the golden age of comedy.’

We can’t wait to bring ‘The Last Laugh’ to the incredible Eric Morecambe Centre’ said Hendy, ‘It feels like it’s the perfect theatre for it’. the-emc.co.uk

CLASSIC IBIZA PERFECTS ITS BEST SHOW YET AHEAD OF HATFIELD HOUSE RETURN

With Classic Ibiza’s return to Hatfield House on Saturday 17 August rapidly approaching, Urban Soul Orchestra, the show’s headliners, assembled in a London recording studio last week to put the finishing touches to their performance ahead of their eight-night tour of our country’s best-loved stately homes.

Having worked on the orchestrations over the winter, Stephen Hussey, USO’s founder and Classic Ibiza conductor, led his musicians and vocalists through their paces to perfect the 16

new tracks in this year’s orchestral set of over 40 house classics. You can get a taster of one of the new tracks, Don’t You Want Me by Felix, recorded at the rehearsal by heading over to Classic Ibiza’s YouTube channel (@classicibiza).

Stephen Hussey comments: “Hearing the orchestrations that I’ve been dreaming up being brought to life for the first time is always something very special. This year is particularly exciting though, as we’ll be performing more new tracks than we’ve ever played before. For me, musically, this is our best show yet. I think we’ve got a perfect mix of some absolutely belting new

tracks and some firm Classic Ibiza favourites. I can’t wait to share what we’ve got in store with our awesome Hatfield House audience.”

The general rule at Classic Ibiza is that the BPM goes up as the sun goes down. The evening starts at 5pm with a vibe straight from one of Ibiza’s iconic beachside bars, before building to an alfresco nightclub by the time the concert reaches a crescendo at 10.30pm. Headlining the event is Urban Soul Orchestra, known for working alongside dance music greats like Groove Armada, Robert Miles and Nightmares On Wax. They’ll be delving into house music’s rich archive with DJ Goldierocks, reinventing the most iconic tracks from the last 30 years. Along the way, highlights include a set by former Pacha Ibiza resident, DJ Jose Luis, and an awe-inspiring laser and light show.

If you can’t wait until the summer to get a taste of the Classic Ibiza experience, USO yesterday released a new live album, Classic Ibiza III,

recorded at multiple venues on last year’s tour. The album is available on all major streaming platforms.

Stephen Hussey adds: “I’m really proud of our new album. Although there’s nothing quite like being at the show, I think it captures the energy and musicianship our performance, as well as the incredible vibe of the audience. Featuring some of the tracks that we’ll be playing this summer, it’s the perfect appetiser ahead of this year’s tour. Turn it up and enjoy!”

Demand for Classic Ibiza tickets is strong again this year, with some venues already at capacity. The show is proud to be supporting Herts Young Homeless.

Choosing Your Perfect Wedding Ring: Expert Tips from Baker Brothers

Selecting the perfect wedding ring is a significant decision, symbolising your enduring love and commitment. With a myriad of options available, it can be overwhelming. However, the experts at Baker Brothers have curated a guide to help you find a ring that truly resonates with your style and sentiment.

Start Early

Procrastination is your enemy when it comes to choosing a wedding ring. Begin your search at least five months before your wedding. This timeframe allows you to thoroughly explore options, compare prices, and make a decision without feeling rushed.

Choose a Style that Suits You

Your wedding ring should reflect your personal taste. Think about the type of jewellery you usually wear. If your style is simple and classic, you might prefer a traditional gold or platinum band. If you prefer unique and bold, a ring set with diamonds or coloured gemstones could be ideal. Baker Brothers offers a diverse range of styles, from timeless classics to modern and vintage-inspired designs, ensuring there’s something for every preference and budget.

Consider the Metal

The choice of metal significantly impacts the look and feel of your wedding ring. Gold and platinum are the most popular choices. Gold is versatile, available in yellow, white, and rose hues, each offering a distinct look. Platinum is celebrated for its durability, natural white sheen, and hypoallergenic properties. Your lifestyle should also influence your choice; if you lead an active life, a more durable metal like platinum might be preferable.

Choose the Right Diamond

For those considering a diamond-studded wedding ring, understanding the 4Cs – cut, colour, clarity, and carat weight – is crucial. These characteristics determine the quality and brilliance of the diamond. At Baker Brothers, our diamond specialists will guide you through selecting diamonds that meet your aesthetic preferences and budget, ensuring your ring sparkles perfectly.

Get the Right Size

Comfort and fit are paramount for a ring you will wear daily. Have your finger professionally measured to ensure the perfect fit. Baker Brothers offers complimentary sizing services, guaranteeing that your wedding ring will sit comfortably.

Consider Your Budget

Wedding rings come in a variety of price ranges. It’s essential to find one that aligns with your budget. Baker Brothers is home to a broad selection of rings at different price points. We also offer a free design service, working with renowned UK-based goldsmiths to create custom pieces that fit both your budget and style.

Choosing your wedding ring is a significant step, but with these expert tips, you’ll navigate the process with confidence. Whether you’re drawn to a classic gold band or a distinctive diamond ring, Baker Brothers is dedicated to helping you find the perfect symbol of your love. Our commitment to quality, excellence, and customer satisfaction ensures a seamless and memorable experience in selecting your wedding ring.

LADYBIRD BOOK EXHIBITION FLIES HOME TO ST ALBANS

Until 8 September 2024

From Peter and Jane with Pat the dog and What to Look for in Summer to classic fairy tales like Chicken Licken and The Three Little Pigs – just one look at an iconic Ladybird book and you’re instantly transported back in time by the distinctive designs that captured the imagination and hearts of so many children.

‘The Wonderful World of the Ladybird Artists’ exhibition, which opened at St Albans Museum + Gallery on 10 May, uncovers the story of the talented artists who illustrated Ladybird books and recounts the fascinating history of the little Loughborough print business which became a giant in children’s publishing.

Visitors are greeted by a ‘Wall of Books’ showcasing just about every Ladybird book issued between 1940 and 1980 (around 500 books) and can leaf through over 200 shared books in a ‘Summer Meadow’ installation of ‘grassy’ rugs and comfortable beanbags and enjoy interactive games too.

Colourful and family-friendly, the exhibition is the brainchild of Ladybird book expert and curator, Helen Day who has spent more than 20 years collecting books and researching the company.

Launched in 2018, the exhibition has toured the UK, but it has always been Helen’s ambition to bring it home to St Albans where she was born. Helen’s parents were both teachers in St Albans, Helen went to Cunningham Hill primary school as a young child, worked in Oaklands College for many years and went on to teach English as a foreign language around the world. Helen now resides with her husband in Harpenden.

A Ladybird book chosen to feature in this exhibition specifically is Warwick The Kingmaker as it refers to the famous Battle of St Albans which took place on 22 May 1455 and traditionally marks the beginning of the Wars of the Roses in Britain.

LOVE LOCAL 32 JUNE 2024

Helen says: “I’m thrilled that the exhibition is coming home to St Albans. I’ll have a chance to show my friends, family, colleagues and students what’s been absorbing me over these years!”

Displayed in the Weston Gallery and showcasing an unparalleled collection of books, original artworks and artefacts, the evocative exhibition traces the interconnected work of the many talented illustrators and tells the Ladybird story itself over its ‘golden years’ from 1940 to 1975 and how the artists played an immeasurable role in the extraordinary success of the company in the 20th century.

Helen continues: “For many years now, I’ve been interested in the history of Ladybird books and in the artists who illustrated them. I began as a collector, but my interest soon broadened into a desire to understand better the social history of Britain that the books contain. Ladybird books illustrated many childhoods, and the Ladybird artists gave us an interpretation of the 20th century in bright colour and careful detail.

“Hundreds of books are made available for visitors to browse through and share and it’s always such a joy to watch the expressions of adults as they recall the images and the memories they stir from their childhood and of children as they discover the wonderful illustrations for the very first time.”

Visitors will be taken through different zones and themes including Nature and the

Environment, History, Fairy Tales, and Learning to Read, each exploring the story and work of different artists including photographs of the locations, families, friends and neighbours who inspired them, and looking at the moments in time they were capturing.

One artist to look out for is Martin Aitchison, who illustrated around 100 books for Ladybird from the early 1960s including the popular Peter and Jane series and many Fairy Tale books including Martin’s personal favourite commission, Gulliver’s Travels. Martin was the only Ladybird book artist Helen met in person and they became friends before he died in 2016.

Alongside the exhibition, there will be engaging activities taking place during the May half-term and summer holidays for families and adults to enjoy including Making a Model Ladybird, a Ladybird Trail and several Talks.

Catherine Newley, Audience Development Manager at St Albans Museums, says:

“It’s fantastic to bring this magical exhibition home to St Albans, where Helen would have enjoyed the books herself as a child. The iconic Ladybird covers and illustrations were central to their success, and we are delighted to host this extensive and heart-warming exhibition which is sure to evoke feelings of childhood nostalgia and times gone by.”

As proud holders of the prestigious Green Flag with Distinction from Eco-Schools, children at Nursery on the Green in Redbourn are benefitting from an award-winning eco-education, which looks to set them up for the rest of their lives.

The accolade, which is the highest in the global scheme and given for exceptional environmental awareness and conservation practices, has been earnt by children at the setting on South Common for their continued commitment to taking care of the planet, which includes a curriculum packed full of exciting and immersive experiences.

From babies using natural and recycled materials in their sensory play and exploring sea life themed water trays to learn about the impact of ocean pollution, to older children creating habitats for garden wildlife and embarking on litter picking missions around their local area, there is something for every child from six weeks to nearly five years to enjoy.

Activities, which also include growing herbs and vegetables for talented nursery chefs to use in daily meals, as well as nature walks, bug hunts, composting and gardening initiatives, are designed to promote the development of personal, social and emotional life skills, as well as introducing the children to basic maths, science and environmental messages in preparation for school.

46 JUNE 2024 EDUCATION
THE DETAILS

Herts headteacher offers sage advice ahead of exams results days this year

The head at a local independent day and boarding school in Bushey, has shared some helpful advice as GCSE and A-level exams are in full swing. This year, students in England will be given some extra help in maths and science in recognition of the major disruption to education during the previous Covid lockdowns. This is the last year that GCSE students will get formulae and equation sheets. This year’s Year 11 and Year 13 cohorts are currently knee-deep in revision as exams are now in full swing. With the end of term in sight and the long summer wait ahead, Lara Péchard at St Margaret’s School has shared some useful tips and advice for students and parents to help them to prepare for results day when it comes in August.

She said, “The current cohort of Year 11 students have spent every year of their senior school education either in the middle of the pandemic or in the wake of it. For many, their learning experiences over previous years will have been tarnished by the lockdowns, with many struggling to catch up or reach their full potential. This final push of support is very much needed and I know how hard our students have been working and the resilience and determination they have shown over recent months, they absolutely deserve success.”

Education Secretary, Gillian Keegan, announced last year that students in England would get formulae and equation sheets for a final time this

year in maths, physics and combined science, with normal exam arrangements resuming in 2025.

Ms Péchard also urged parents to start thinking about results day, she added: “Once exams are over, I would urge students and parents to squeeze as much information and support out of their school as possible, in particular, insight around careers advice. If students know what they are studying at A level or university, then start gently preparing and reading. Trust the process that your school has put in place, try not to worry and channel any post-exam anxieties into something productive that will help you for the next stage of the journey.”

In preparation for results day, Ms Péchard says families should keep talking and set time aside. She said, “Eat together as a family and enjoy face to face conversation away from the virtual world. Parents might want to take a few days off work leading up to results day if that is possible. Encourage an early night before the big day so you are raring to go that morning. Be prepared, clear on the time that the results are released in schools and come into school so staff can help and support. Parents should focus on the hard work and offer support rather than the grades. Keep the attention on the excitement of what is coming –after all, results are about the future.”

REDEFINING TREATMENT FOR KNEE OSTEOARTHRITIS

We look at the cutting-edge injectable hydrogel that delivers long lasting, proven pain relief for knee osteoarthritis without surgery (1-4)

For many of the 8.5 million people in the UK living with knee osteoarthritis (OA),(5) life is hampered by constant pain, limited mobility, and difficulty with simple, everyday tasks. But there’s hope with Arthrosamid® – the first and only permanent injectable treatment that is proven to maintain a significant, long-lasting reduction in knee OA pain – even three years post treatment.(1-4) Experts are calling it a ‘game-changer.’

Sufferers delay seeking help for knee pain, assuming it’s an unavoidable part of ageing. But Arthrosamid® offers patients a new pathway. Unlike traditional treatments, it’s proven to offer respite from knee osteoarthritis with a single treatment, and without the need for surgery.(1-4)

Knee OA: common causes and treatments

Knee OA is a long-term condition where shockabsorbing cartilage is worn away, causing bones to rub together and the joint to become stiff, swollen, and painful. Despite OA being the most common type of arthritis and the fastest cause of disability worldwide,(6) the treatment area has seen minimal progression in the last 20 years. With so little known about the exact causes of knee OA, a permanent cure has yet to be discovered. Many sufferers find themselves in an ongoing cycle of treatments, such as painkillers, physiotherapy appointments and various knee joint injectables (eg steroids or hyaluronic acid). Despite providing some relief, the effects can often be relatively short-lived, leaving many fearing

70 JUNE 2024 FASHION, HEALTH & BEAUTY
Mr James Donaldson, an orthopaedic surgeon from the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore,

that knee replacement surgery is the only longterm answer.

The emergence of Arthrosamid®, however, has been hailed by leading clinicians as an exciting, first and only injectable hydrogel that has been proven(7) to help patients with knee osteoarthritis and offers a real alternative to surgery.

What the experts say

Mr James Donaldson, an orthopaedic surgeon from the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore, offering the Arthrosamid® treatment, says: “I’ve treated many patients with Arthrosamid® and have seen them experience significant reductions in pain, as well as improvements in their mobility, and overall quality of life.

“In contrast to other treatments, Arthrosamid® appears to be offering patients long-lasting respite from the pain and immobility of knee osteoarthritis and, in many cases, avoiding or delaying the need for surgery.”

How does Arthrosamid® work?

Arthrosamid® is a hydrogel made up of 2.5 per cent cross-linked polyacrylamide and 97.5 per cent water. Arthrosamid® combines with the synovial tissue in the knee to form a permanent scaffold,(8) and it’s this unique characteristic that provides a significant reduction in OA pain over a longer period(1-4) — with one single treatment.(7)

Move freely, live fully

Jeanne Zivoni is a keen gardener from Hampstead and has suffered from joint issues for many years

but noticed a real improvement since being treated with Arthrosamid®. “The chronic and persistent pain in my knee was starting to get me down and I was keen to look for an alternative to pain medications. I also wanted to help ward off the need for potential knee surgery, as I was concerned about the intensive recovery period necessary to get back to full strength and fitness.

“I decided to give Arthrosamid® a chance and, following a quick procedure with minimal recovery time, I was immediately impressed by the improvements in my pain levels and uplift in overall mobility. As someone who wants to remain fit, active and pain-free for many years to come, I’m confident I made the right decision which has given me a new lease of life!”

FASHION ‘N’ FABRICS

After being under Simone’s management for 6 years, long established Fashion n Fabrics is now offering Long Arm Quilting Services. This is a great addition to this popular ‘Aladdins Cave’ of crafting and dressmaking supplies.

Simone has been doing long-arm quilting for customers for 12 years at home, working around family life. Her trusty Handiquilter Avante 18 with the Pro-Stitcher® computerised quilting system is now in its new purpose built secure home next to the classroom at the back of the store. Also the service allows quilters to get their tops finished off with standard or custom edge-to-edge designs of any complexity.

“I know all too well that quilting on a standard sewing machine is difficult and cumbersome, and is a task that sometimes detracts from the fun of creating the top! I love being part of the finishing

process with the quilter who has lovingly created their quilt and done all the hard work, by providing options and discussing their requirements. And of course, I love to see the finished art work and a happy quilter at the end.”

Salone del Mobile furniture fair & Milan Design Week 2024

Installations, interiors, exhibitions, energy, furniture, frolics. Yes, it’s the Salone del Mobile furniture fair and Milan Design Week 2024.

With the Milanese streets abuzz with excitement, it’s where luxury interior design and theatricality collide. From immersive installations –exhibits to climb through, light shows set to music, rooms focused on smell and mood, usually-offlimit buildings to explore – furniture found new and creative ways to wow us.

DEEP REDS:

Dive into the full-bodied richness that dominated this year’s Milan showrooms; fruity burgundy/ cherry/oxblood shades that feel intense and energising as well as muted and elegant at the same time. The colours came in all guises, from gleaming lacquer to please-tell-me-where-yourquarry-is heavily veined marble; carried best on forms that were simplistic in

order to let the rich pigment lead the way and set the tone in stone.

LACQUERS:

‘Shinier, glossier, more polished!’ yelled the walkways of Salone del Mobile, and the designers delivered, with hard furniture from dining tables to storage covered in layers of practically mirror-like brilliance at every turn. How does lacquer impact a space? It turns any object into a sculpture, a working reflection-distorting piece of art that draws all eyes in.

Long associated with extravagance and elegance, lacquered furniture has a history of making an impact indoors. This year, lacquered furniture is all about contrast: classic tones such as iconic deep red and dark bottle green are being combined with experimental, contemporary forms, the designs standing monolith-like within a room, awaiting discussion and admiration alike.

“‘Shinier, glossier, more polished!’ yelled the walkways of Salone del Mobile, and the designers delivered, with hard furniture from dining tables to storage covered in layers of practically mirror-like brilliance at every turn”

PADDED & PILLOWY:

Get ready to sink into unadulterated comfort –contemporary furniture is getting super- stuffed. This year’s design cohort of chairs, sofas, footstools, tables and more are voluptuous, curvy designs that aren’t skimping on materials. From cushions on seating that seem over-filled, plush, and puffy to generously shaped hard furniture, this design movement tells the story of cosiness and relaxation where more is oh-so more.

Each piece is outrageously tempting – you can practically feel it enveloping you before you’ve even begun to take a seat. They’re soothing. Welcoming. Each piece is a sanctuary – nothing and no one can get you (possibly even find you) when you’re nestled safely in these soft, cocooning embraces.

PRODUCT FOCUS: DS-888, DE-SEDE

Enter, next-level seating flexibility. Following visually in the footsteps of its much celebrated predecessor: the 1972-designed DS-600, the DS-

888 is similarly snake-like and curvaceous thanks to a set of thin segments. What’s new is the backrest – able to move in multiple directions, the recurrent upholstered ridges can each be customised in height and angle to create individual head and neck support, as well as innovatively sliding along the modular base to be positioned as needed.

“With the DS-888 Collina, we wanted to redefine the limits of what is possible with a modular design and achieve a seating landscape that stands out with its versatility, ergonomics and sophisticated aesthetics.” Monika Walser, CEO of de Sede.

Created for use inside and out, the interior sofa is upholstered in premium leather on a high gloss chrome, or satin black, base frame, while the weatherproof outdoor models are wrapped in durable fabric developed by Kvadrat and The Romo Group on stainless steel frames in finishes such as black silk matt or white silk gloss. chaplins.co.uk

DISCOVER THE BENEFITS OF AN INDOOR POOL

Origin - crafting pools, creating dreams

In today’s hectic world, finding time for selfcare is essential. Still, the hustle and bustle of daily life can make it challenging to prioritise our health. However, what if the key to achieving both physical and mental well-being could be in your garden or part of your home?

Enter Origin Pools – your gateway to a healthier, happier lifestyle through the transformative power of swimming.

Swimming is so much more than just a recreational activity, it’s a holistic approach to health and well-being that offers countless benefits for both body and mind. As it’s a form of lowimpact exercise, swimming is ideal for people of all ages and fitness levels.

Whether you’re a seasoned athlete or a novice swimmer, the buoyancy of water supports your body, reducing strain on joints and muscles while providing a highly effective workout. Beyond the physical benefits, swimming has a profound impact on mental well-being. The therapeutic properties of water have long been recognised for their ability to promote relaxation, reduce stress and improve mood. Immersing yourself in water creates a sense of weightlessness that eases tension in the body and calms the mind, providing a natural antidote to the pressures of modern life. Moreover, regular swimming has been linked to increased levels of endorphins – the body’s natural mood enhancers –leaving you feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.

But the advantages of swimming stretch beyond physical and mental well-being. Did you know swimming can actually make children smarter? Research has shown children who swim regularly tend to perform better academically, exhibiting improved cognitive function, problem-solving skills, and concentration levels. The rhythmic, repetitive nature of swimming stimulates the brain, fostering neural connections and enhancing overall cognitive development. One of the most valuable gifts we can give our children is a love for physical activity. Griffith University’s ‘Early Years Swimming’ report suggests that children who develop a passion for swimming are more likely to maintain an active lifestyle as they grow older. With an Origin pool, you’re not just providing your family with a fun recreational activity – you’re investing in their future.

So why choose Origin for your swimming pool needs? They bring over 40 years of expertise and passion to every project. From initial design consultations to construction, maintenance and upgrades, they are committed to delivering unparalleled quality and service at every step of the journey. RHS Chelsea Flower Show inspired trends

This year’s show gardens were full of colour and championed the importance of sustainability. By Yolanthe

From the blend of historical literary inspiration with contemporary design excellence to the use of native plants, there has been an emphasis on sustainability and allowing nature to be itself at this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show. These are some of the key gardening trends to emerge from this year’s event.

SUSTAINABILITY

According to the chair of The Society of Garden Designers (SGD) Andrew Duff, the main trend at this year’s RHS Chelsea is sustainability.

“It’s become the norm, and I don’t see it as a passing trend. There is a lot of native planting of plants from the UK, which makes it more adaptive. These are like birch trees, native grasses and a big move away from lawns,” said Duff.

“People are more conscious of climate change. We will get a lot more rain as well as increased temperatures, which broadens the level of planting that’s being celebrated.”

The way people are using their gardens has changed, mainly due to the pandemic, Duff said.

“They are enjoying planting again and want to be outside, nurture a living thing in their garden

and see how they can plant their own food and conserve rainwater.

“We can’t continue to water our gardens in the way we are doing. So plants need to be tougher and that’s why British natives are so important. It can also show that it’s okay for the garden to do its thing, which is a refreshing change – the garden is not seen as a big burden as it once was.

“Gardens should be fun and shouldn’t be precious. Families with young children should be able to kick a ball and see bees on plants. Gardens also have other functions, like drying clothes.”

WATER

Landscape designer Tom Massey and architect Je Ahn, who designed The WaterAid Garden, which featured flood and drought-resilient plants to adapt to a changing climate, agreed with Duff.

“There are so many gardens here dealing with sustainable water management, including The WaterAid Garden, which is really all about rainwater harvesting.

“In this country, we had a lot of flooding this winter and in previous summers we have had 40 degrees Celsius heat and drought. So even here, in the UK, this is something we should all be thinking about. It’s really important,” said Massey.

GENTLE GARDENING

‘Gentle gardening’ is a term Massey used to describe another trend to better support biodiversity.

“There are so many gardens here dealing with sustainable water management, including The WaterAid Garden, which is really all about rainwater harvesting”

“Planting that is designed for pollinators and insects. So I think a looser and more gentle approach to gardening, one that is more in tune with nature and moves away from the very clipped, formal and sterile landscapes that maybe we would have seen 10 years ago,” he said.

“This requires less chemical use, being more patient, not demanding perfection immediately, just being a bit more relaxed in the way we approach our gardening.

It’s also about having the right plant and knowing the right location to plant them, Ahn added.

“That’s a really important message. After Covid, more people started to buy house plants and are learning more about how to properly take care of them.

“But people just need to do a little more reading, make use of social media, the enormous amount of resources the RHS have or even work with a professional.”

GROWING YOUR OWN FOOD

Garden designers and passionate growers Lucy Hutchings and Kate Cotterill, who founded their heirloom seed company She Grows Veg in June 2023, have tried their best to get rid of the gardening jargon, avoid using the Latin names and anything else that can put people off from growing their own food.

“Growing your own food can be straightforward,” said Hutchings. “You don’t need a big garden, and can literally sprinkle some lettuce seeds in a pot and leave it by the windowsill.

90 JUNE 2024 HOME & PROPERTY

And if it doesn’t work or dies, it really doesn’t matter, just have another go. It’s about taking out the fear of failure.

“People have become a lot more conscious of where their food comes from, especially young people. They care and want to know that it hasn’t had too much impact on the planet as well.

“For these reasons, they’ve also realised that they don’t have much control when you buy food from a shop. But if you grow it yourself, you know exactly what happens to it, it’s from nothing but love and you can taste the difference. You know it’s massively nutrient-packed.

“With anything grown, as soon as it’s picked, the nutritional levels start to decrease, so if you pick a fruit or vegetable from your garden or windowsill – wherever you grow it – you can eat it almost straight away and it’s so much better for you.

“People love anything that’s brightly coloured, which has the highest level of nutrients in it. This allows you to eat other things you wouldn’t usually see in the supermarket aisle. Swiss chard is a great example of this, it’s a bit like spinach with a big fat stem, lasts for pretty much a year and it doesn’t die in the winter – a brilliant one for beginner gardeners.”

COLOURFUL PLANTS

A variety of summer plants were used throughout RHS Chelsea, which could mean an increase in

“If you grow it yourself, you know exactly what happens to it, it’s from nothing but love and you can taste the difference:

colourful plants in gardens untill September, including the tall yet familiar Foxglove – also known as Digitalis – and perennials, which featured in many different designs.

“The subtle use of planting colours is a nod to people’s desire to feel more immersed in nature and be part of their countryside. I think there is a link to interiors too, which are becoming bolder and brighter, and often gardens would go the opposite way,” said Duff.

TREES

The power of trees can sometimes be overlooked, especially how they adapt to climate change.

Bonsai, the Japanese art of growing and shaping miniature trees in containers, was also featured at the show.

“We’ve seen a huge increase in people getting into bonsai. If you are suffering from depression or any other mental health issues, this helps you become extroverted instead of introverted,” said amateur grower Nick Payne from The Bonsai Boys.

“When I’m working with my trees, I completely forget about everything. A lot of these trees are pretty old and you can carry them around. They are fed, pruned and looked after very well.”

ELYSIAN RESIDENCES PRESENTS THE DENTON

Newly opened elegant retirement living in Berkhamsted

Elysian Residences, the leading developer in retirement living, is proud to introduce The Denton, a luxury retirement community in Hertfordshire which is now open.

Located on Shootersway in Berkhamsted, The Denton offers 103 one- and two-bedroom apartments, across two buildings, set either side of a landscaped central courtyard, with views out towards the Chiltern Hills. Almost every home has either a private balcony or terrace and ensuring that each residence benefits from plenty of natural daylight, and views of green spaces.

Gavin Stein, Elysian Residences CEO said: “The Denton has been an exciting project and as our first development in Hertfordshire we will ensure that it demonstrates the high level of service and quality that homeowners can expect from all Elysian Residences. have created The Denton. With state-of-the-art facilities more often seen in top five-star hotels and a variety of activities, The Denton will set a new benchmark for retirement living in the home counties.”

The Denton’s Japanese-inspired gardens have been designed by multi-award winning BradleyHole Schoenaich Landscapes, who considered the design of the grounds not purely for appearance and aesthetics, but also its connection to the wider landscape with a focus on biodiversity.

Homeowners will enjoy access to health classes, cooking and art class, and various events and activities with staff ready to help with groceries, dog walking, securing tickets for the theatre or even organising major events, with help from the resident chef. The Denton’s restaurant and cafe will offer homeowners, guests and the local community both fine dining and more casual menus, which will change throughout the year with a focus on local, seasonal produce. Designed to an extremely high specification, each apartment is spacious, with warm and neutral interiors, expertly designed to be easily adaptable whilst maintaining a sense of style and luxury.

The Oren

Elysian residences launch first show apartment at The Oren: Hampstead’s new luxury retirement development designed by Stanton Williams

Elysian Residences have unveiled the first show apartment at their premier development, The Oren, on West Heath Road, Hampstead, London. The £150 million (GDV) retirement community conceived, developed and operated by Elysian Residences, has been designed by RIBA Stirling prize-winning architectural practice Stanton Williams, working closely with renowned landscape architect and Chelsea Flower Show Gold Medal winner Christopher Bradley-Hole, of Bradley-Hole Schoenaich Landscape.

The Oren provides 44 two- and three-bedroom apartments, including four penthouses, all set in stunning grounds, and delivers a new concept in luxury retirement living, combining exceptional services with premium amenities.

Olive, the first show apartment at The Oren, located on the first floor offers excellent westerly views over the grounds from the main reception and three bedrooms. The apartment draws on its stunning surroundings, both manmade and natural, blending elements from both, to create a calm,

welcoming, contemporary home that is luxurious, while remaining at one with its surroundings.

Influenced by colour, texture and tone, the interior design team at Elysian Residences were inspired to create a space that reflects both the natural and built environments. Soft, natural tones have been contrasted with earthy reds and bold greens, inspired by the trees and planting within the grounds of The Oren. Contrasting tones and textures of the buildings provided further inspiration, with wood, velvet, leather and metallics being drawn in. Sitting perfectly against this backdrop home furnishings and lighting inspired by iconic designs of the 20thcentury, themselves evolved from a desire to be well designed, ergonomic and comfortable, provide excitement and flair.

Gavin Stein, Chief Executive Officer, Elysian Residences, says: “Elysian Residences is delighted to announce the launch of the first show apartment at The Oren, a state-of-the-art luxury address which combines exceptional hospitality with hotel-style amenities and beautiful private residences, set in beautiful grounds.

“It has been an exciting journey working with both Stanton Williams and Bradley-Hole Schoenaich Landscape, who have helped us deliver our vision. We believe The Oren, completing this autumn, will represent one of the best retirement living developments in the world. We look forward to welcoming homeowners and visitors to The Oren and for them to experience the very best in retirement living, in one of the finest places to live in the United Kingdom.”

THE DETAILS

The Oren is currently one of 11 Elysian Residences and will provide 46 apartments, including four penthouses, with build completion expected in 2024.
