Bill’s St Albans

ill’s In St Albans – I’m not going to lie – it’s always somewhere I have thought about for a breakfast or brunch. So, a Friday evening for cocktails and dinner had never crossed my mind – but let me tell you now I would not be making that mistake again! Our evening started off with a warm welcome into Bill’s, with stylish and vibrant décor, comfortable seating and dimmed lights and candlelight, it really is a beautiful venue. Our friendly waitress Loretta was attentive straight away and full of personality! She made sure we had drinks straight away which always gets a 10 star rating from me. Loretta then explained the menu and gave her recommendations which I found was refreshing, and then made sure we received olives and water for the table before we had even ordered our starters. My husband and I love to share starters so we were pleased to see on the menu sharing platters and small plates and nibbles you could order Tapas style. We decided to try humus with pitta bread, grilled halloumi cheese with salsa and lamb meat balls! Every mouthful was fresh and full of flavour and my tastebuds were tingling throughout! The starters were light and different and a real tasty on-trend treat. I can see myself going back again and ordering all the small plates with a nice glass of wine and making a night of it with just those dishes. For mains, my husband opted for the steak and chips with peppercorn sauce and I went for a good old fashioned burger. I could tell it was homemade and full of flavour, It was a generous portion and wasn’t sure I would finish it. My husband’s steak was cooked to perfection, piping hot, and the sauce was served on the side which is always a winner for him as he loves to dip rather than pour. We couldn’t leave without dessert after Loretta made sure we were aware how gorgeous they were! My husband went for a toffee banoffee dessert

1 2 M AY 2 0 1 8

which came out with hot toffee sauce that poured over the chocolate bomb, melting it – and I went for a triple chocolate brownie with vanilla ice cream. Both desserts were to die for and ended our meal perfectly. I must admit though, I was a little jealous of my husband’s! The rest of the evening we laid back and enjoyed the beautiful chilled atmosphere in Bill’s – background music which wasn’t too loud. We decided to indulge and try some of the new cocktails on the menu – well it was Friday after all! I can highly recommend the Espresso Martini, which came with a toasted Marshmallow on the side which was yummy. I can highly recommend Bill’s in St Albans 5 stars all the way. Gary and his team couldn’t do enough for us and they really are a fantastic team. Breakfast, brunch, coffee, lunch, dinner or just drinks and cocktails – Bill’s can do it all, and now they have also officially opened their secret garden outside so you can start to enjoy the summer months eating alfresco and or just sipping cocktails with friends.

PERFUME AND PARADE LIKE ROYALTY WITH A REGAL WEEKEND IN LONDON

Gearing up for Harry and Meghan’s wedding, London’s Langham Hotel is offering visitors the chance to live, eat and sleep like a prince or princess. Sarah Marshall trials the experience.

W

hen King Edward VII attended the glamorous opening of London’s Langham Hotel in 1865, he must have been impressed by its fancy hydraulic lifts - the first in the capital. More than 150 years later, I’m equally amazed by the elegant, mirrored capsules whizzing me up to the hotel’s exclusive Langham Club Lounge, where temporary members have their own dedicated reception. Members of the monarchy have frequently passed through these doors: Princess Diana has partied in The Grand Ballroom, Prince Edward has dined at Roux at The Landau, and the Duchess of York still pops in for tea at The Palm Court. But here, just metres from London’s busy Oxford Street, everyone has the opportunity to live (even if just for a night) like royalty. And that experience just got better, with the introduction of a new royal-themed package to celebrate the forthcoming wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. Eager to capitalise on their stately connections across the capital, the hotel has set up exclusive behind-the-scenes access to companies issued with a Royal Warrant to provide goods or services to the crown.

2 0 M AY 2 0 1 8

I went along to sample the ‘crown jewels’ on offer...

Find out how to smell like a princess A family-run perfumers since 1730, Floris has been supplying the royals with bespoke scents for decades, although the actual ingredients of each perfume are a tightly guarded secret. Proud to be the oldest family perfumers in the world, the company has earned 19 Royal Warrants throughout its history and sticks to strict regulations set by the crown - including not testing any products on animals. Filled with mirrors and ornate wooden cabinets, their flagship store on Jermyn Street is a cherished antique in its own right. I’m led into a back room museum, where a ‘peineta’ hair-clip in a glass cabinet is a nod to the company’s Spanish heritage. On the wall, black and white photographs illustrate past and present A-list customers, including Marilyn Monroe, Winston Churchill, Gwyneth Paltrow and Ian Fleming. The 1951 fragrance worn by the Bond author is a classic, leathery scent popular with visitors from overseas. “Everyone wants to smell like 007!” chuckles staff member, Amaua Robles. While some celebrity favourites are available to buy, more exclusive concoctions will never be available to the public. Robles admits that Floris has created a special perfume for Meghan and Harry as a wedding gift. “There is a relevance to the elements of the

perfume, but the recipe is a secret,” she says coyly. “Although I can tell you it has a base of vanilla and amber.” Only one bottle will be made - and hopefully worn by Meghan on her big day - although fans can purchase Bergamotto Di Positano, a fragrance which shares similar base notes. Described as a perfume to “excite the senses, anticipating new discoveries just over the horizon”, it would be an adequate fit for the adventurous couple. Special access also takes me to an elegant chemistry lab-cum-gentleman’s drawing room, where handwritten ledgers list 18th century purchases and a piece of wedding cake gifted by Kate and William is proudly displayed. “It came with a ‘thank you’ letter,” explains Robles, “for a special scent we created using stephanotis - the flower of love.” For £450, members of the public can also purchase a bespoke fragrance. Dressed in a white overall, perfumer Nicola Pozzani shows me dozens of potions and imperial measuring jugs, all used to create scents based on memories and an individual’s life story.

Dress in a stately fashion Royal outfits regularly feature in the fashion pages of magazines, but what about uniforms worn by the Queen’s ceremonial bodyguards? Made with fiery red wool and elaborate embroidered gold thread, each costume costs around £35K to make - so it’s no surprise they’re kept under lock and key. Fortunately, members of the public can admire them from behind glass in the upstairs room of Gieves & Hawkes at number 1 Savile Row, an historic building once belonging to the Royal Geographical Society. 2 2 M AY 2 0 1 8

Issued with several Royal Warrants to make military uniforms (there’s some suggestion they were even connected to Lord Nelson), the company continues to take care of the bodyguards’ attire and carries out fittings and adjustments every time they are used. Framed pages from historic ledgers hang on the walls, and a coffee table book illustrates a red military jacket commissioned and worn by Princess Diana. On the shop floor, a mannequin is dressed in a sparkly disco adaptation of a naval admiral’s tunic - a replica of a garment ordered by Michael Jackson. Today, the store sells both ready-to-wear and bespoke suits, with prices for the latter starting at £5K. While flutes of champagne are served to prospective customers mulling over shirts and jackets, the real action happens downstairs in the cutting room, where I’m given special access. Brown paper patterns flutter from rails underneath bright strip lighting, and semi-made jackets sculpted using hundreds of stitches are testimony to the love and dedication invested in each piece. A suit can require up to 100 hours of work, and tailors consider a well-fitting garment a work of art. “When a customer tells you it’s the most comfortable thing they’ve ever worn, that’s the ultimate compliment,” one tells me.

Eat like a real king Embraced by a curved window flooded with sunshine during the day, Langham’s Roux at The Landau is possibly one of the most beautiful restaurants in London. A recent renovation has given the space an oval centre counter, where diners can pull up a stool alongside Cornish crabs and bowls of oysters. It’s all part of a more relaxed approach adopted by the restaurant, where - one waitress whispers to me staff are even now allowed to have tattoos. Relaxed, though, doesn’t mean slack. Service is delivered with finesse and chef Nicholas Pasquier’s menu is outstanding; a chicken gyoza bathes in citrus zing, and the crab salad is so meticulously shredded, I wonder if it’s been done with a ruler. It’s a banquet fit for any member of the monarchy worthy of its own Royal Warrant, in fact.

THE DETAILS The Langham Hotel’s Royal Season Package starts at £695 per room per night, including breakfast for two. Price also includes the two exclusive Royal Warrant holder experiences and Limited Edition Langham Pink Hunter Boots. The package is available to book now from May 19 to October 12, 2018, subject to availability. Visit www.langhamhotels.co.uk or call 020 7636 1000.

Possibly guilt, we don’t feel good enough, we can’t justify to spend that money or even that time doing something that’s just for us? I

MG has announced that Grigor Dimitrov, Hyeon Chung and Lucas Pouille have joined the line-up for this year’s Aspall Tennis Classic at the prestigious Hurlingham Club. 2018 marks the 25th anniversary of the event, which, over the years, has become one of the world’s most starstudded tennis exhibitions. The Aspall Tennis Classic brings world-class tennis and hospitality together for an unmissable summer event, kicking off the British tennis season, during the week prior to Wimbledon. World No.5 Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov first broke into the top 10 in 2014 after advancing to the Wimbledon semi-finals, having defeated defending champion Andy Murray. Dimitrov claimed the biggest title of his career at the 2017 Nitto ATP Finals, finishing the season at a career high of World No. 3. He won four of his eight ATP titles in 2017, including Brisbane, where he beat top 10 opponents Dominic Thiem, Milos Raonic and Kei Nishikori. Rising star and top 20 player South Korean Hyeon Chung began this year with the biggest win of his career, beating World No. 4 Alexander Zverev in the third round of the Australian Open. He went on to upset six-time champion Novak Djokovic to reach his first Grand Slam semi-final, becoming the youngest player to do so since Marin Cilic in 2010. This spring, Chung passed Nishikori in the ATP rankings to end the Japanese player’s seven-year reign as the No. 1 Asian player, achieving a career-high of World No. 19. This will be Chung’s first time playing at the Aspall Tennis Classic at Hurlingham. Accompanying Dimitrov and Chung is Frenchman Lucas Pouille, who turned pro in 2012 and claimed his first ATP title in 2016 at Metz. Pouille was the only player in 2017 to win titles on

During its 25 year history, some of the sport’s best players have competed at the event, including Grand Slam champions Andy Murray, Rafael Nadal, Stan Wawrinka and Marin Čilić, as well as Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Kei Nishikori. The Aspall Tennis Classic also draws many celebrity spectators; in the past, attendees have included Eleanor Tomlinson, Emilia Fox, Sol Campbell and Romeo Beckham. Set on the tranquil 42 acre grounds of The Hurlingham Club, The Aspall Tennis Classic is one of the most intimate tennis events in the social calendar, showcasing both the stars of today and alltime legends playing in a series of singles exhibition matches as they finalise their preparations ahead of Wimbledon.

NEW BOUTIQUE GUEST HOUSE OPENS IN THE GROUNDS OF

W

HATFIELD HOUSE

e are delighted to announce the opening of Lawn House, a new Guest House set within the historic grounds of Hatfield House, home to the Marquess and Marchioness of Salisbury. Originally built around 1785, the property has been sympathetically restored and is bursting with character and charm. Set within its own garden Lawn House comprises of 15 unique bedrooms all traditionally decorated and all with ensuite facilities. Nestled between our visitors’ farm and beautiful woodland it offers guests attending weddings or events at the Hatfield House Estate a perfect place to stay.

THE DESIGN: Threshold Interiors, were appointed to manage the interior design of Lawn House. They took inspiration from John Tradescant the Elder who was an English naturalist, gardener, collector and traveller. He began his career as head gardener to Robert Cecil, 1st Earl of Salisbury at Hatfield House. In 1611, at Robert Cecil’s behest, John Tradescant the elder travelled through the Low Countries & Flanders to Paris, buying trees, flowering shrubs, vines, & bulbs for the new gardens at Hatfield. This inspiration was bought to life with the interior of each room carefully crafted. “Lawn House is a beautiful building with so many traditional features that bring the rooms to life. We enjoyed the challenge of working with the Estate’s existing furniture and upholstery, whilst sourcing new pieces that would sit alongside, seamlessly. The bathrooms are clean and modern but have traditional Victorian tiling and detailing in every one. We worked closely with Lady Salisbury to create interiors that are an eclectic mix of both modern and traditional.” Nicola McEwan (Director at Threshold Interiors) Lady Salisbury has been closely involved in the project to ensure Lawn House compliments Hatfield House itself. The bedrooms are designed with a mix of contemporary and classic pieces of furniture, with rooms featuring individual objects gleaned from the attics of Hatfield House. ‘A family house for a number of years, Lawn House was empty, unloved, and dilapidated. As there was a great need for accommodation to run alongside the many events that take place in the Park, we decided to bring it back to life, and this is the result.’ Lady Salisbury.

THE RESTORATION: The principle challenge was to retain the character of Lawn House whilst respecting the fact that it sits within the Grade 1 listed curtilage of Hatfield House. All work undertaken has ensured that the property was returned virtually to it its original condition, which involved items such as constructing windows sympathetically to the original design. www.lawn-house.com 4 0 M AY 2 0 1 8

ory McIlroy has confirmed he will return to the BMW PGA Championship – the first of eight Rolex Series events on the European Tour’s Race to Dubai in 2018 – with the four-time Major Champion set to join Paul Casey and 2017 Race to Dubai Champion Tommy Fleetwood in the field at Wentworth Club. The former World Number One, who won the prestigious title in 2014, will get his first chance to take on the revamped West Course, which underwent an extensive renovation programme before the 2017 BMW PGA Championship, after being forced to miss last year’s event due to a rib injury. After a strong start to the European Tour season with consecutive top three finishes in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, it will be McIlroy’s first appearance on European soil in 2018. “I’m looking forward to going back to Wentworth,” said McIlroy. “I haven’t played there in a couple of years but from what I’ve seen, with the new grass that they’ve put in, it looks a much better golf course, a much more playable golf course. It was always a great golf course but sometimes it could get very tricky with some of the lies you could get. For them to re-grass the place and for it to look as good as

it does is great, and I’m looking forward to playing it. It’s always a good week. If Wentworth gets good weather, and hopefully we do, the crowds are awesome, the golf course is great, and the area is beautiful, so I’m looking forward to going back.” Lee Westwood is also confirmed to play, making his 25th consecutive appearance at the event, having not missed the tournament since 1994. The former World Number One has finished second on two occasions. “The BMW PGA Championship is always one of my favourite tournaments and I’m really looking forward to going back to Wentworth” said Westwood. England’s Paul Casey admits he cannot wait to play in front of his home crowd again after confirming he will return to the BMW PGA Championship. Casey grew up in Surrey and regularly walked the fairways of the famous West Course as a youngster, watching legends of the game such as Seve Ballesteros and Sir Nick Faldo play in, and win, the prestigious tournament, before the three-time Ryder Cup player went on to emulate his childhood heroes by lifting the title himself in 2009. England’s Tommy Fleetwood will make his first appearance on home soil since being crowned the European Tour’s Race to Dubai Champion. The World Number 11 (at time of release) has confirmed he will be part of the star-studded line up, with tickets to see him in action over the famous West Course, in Surrey, England, now on sale. “The BMW PGA Championship is one of those events you watch as a kid and always dream about winning,” said Fleetwood. “It has always been one of the best events on our Tour – the next one down

The UK’s only Seve Ballesteros course Recently rated London’s #1 golf experience, The Shire London is unique in many ways. Its spectacular Seve Ballesteros golf course sets golfers’ pulses racing, and it is forever destined to be the late Spanish maestro’s one and only gift to golfers in the UK. The club believes in removing golf ’s traditional barriers wherever possible, with no clubhouse dresscode. Its status as the home of The Golf Trust charity often creates opportunities for it to host golf events which show the sport at its most inclusive. The Shire London’s smart, stylish and comprehensive facilities have made it one of the capital city’s leading venues for corporate golf, and the welcome is warm, genuine, unpretentious and friendly. For the 2018 golf season The Shire London has simplified the way in which people book golf days by going all-inclusive – just like your summer holiday. Many clubs start with a basic price, and load on extra costs for adding elements such as complimentary range balls, live scoring or a private 5 4 M AY 2 0 1 8

dining room. But The Shire London’s two new all-inclusive Masters Packages give golf day bookers a comprehensive events deal starting at £70 per golfer including food plus favourites such as Nearest The Pin and Longest Drive contests (with prizes) and a drinks trolley, and extras such as an exclusive room for dining and prize-giving. The two new Masters deals, named after the club’s renowned Seve Ballesteros golf course, are open to groups of 12 or more golfers. There’s a new Ultimate Golf Day package, cramming in every conceivable ‘extra’ for a single price of £105 per person from Monday to Thursday (£110 Fridays) for groups of more than 40 golfers. And if you feel like taking friends and colleagues out for golf on what is traditionally the most miserable day of the week, there’s even a straightforward new ‘Monday Blues’ deal at £55 per head, including food both pre-and post-golf for groups of 16 or more. The new all-inclusive deals are available now, until November 1st this year. See www.theshirelondon.com or call 020 8441 7649.

Merchant Taylors’ school Creating happy, balanced students

As schools’ pastoral focus continues to grow, Head of Middle School at Merchant Taylors’, Tom Jenkin, talks about his role and how pupils benefit from support structures outside of the classroom.

A

ll schools have pastoral responsibilities and a duty of care to pupils with clearly established policies on safeguarding, discipline or anti-discrimination, to name but a few. However, there is a huge disparity in the quality and personalisation of pastoral care between schools. At Merchant Taylors’, we see the individual support for students as centrally important to their happiness and overall experience. Our structures are based around a vertical tutor group system, where small groups of up to 14 students, from a range of ages, are mentored and supported by a specific member of staff. The vertical grouping allows older students to mentor and advise younger boys, but above all allows a more intimate relationship between school, parents and pupils. Happy, balanced students whose unique talents are recognised and nourished are invariably more successful, and better equipped to cope with the inevitable anxieties of modern life. Each boy is allocated a personal tutor from the day they join, taking a personal interest in the boy, getting to know him, supervising his welfare and academic progress and giving a single point of contact for parents. The prioritisation of pastoral care of this nature aims to develop young men of character, as well as qualification. This ethos and structure allow a greater focus on the overall experience of young people, above and beyond the accumulation of academic results. 5 6 M AY 2 0 1 8

Aristotle wrote that the aim in life was to flourish and that meant fulfilling our purpose to an excellent level. The order of priorities, therefore, are really important: to live a full and rounded life; to learn to form meaningful, positive relationships; to study the subjects we love; to pursue the interests we have. As boys progress into the senior years, they are encouraged to lead clubs and societies and set the tone, eventually serving the broader communities which have served us. Of course, few of us progress through life without having to negotiate significant bumps in the road. It is perhaps here that the quality of relationship between school, student and home becomes more crucial than ever. One hears a great deal about modern pressures: increasing anxiety and mental health challenges for young people, social media and family breakdown. Then, there is increased competition for university places, and unavoidable changes of adolescence into the mix only adds to our central conviction that it is the unique, holistic experience of the child which should be the focal point for care. Obsessing over whether his algebra is level 4a or 5 misses the more important picture. To this end, and to supplement the individual care of the tutor if needed, Merchant Taylors’ employs a full-time, independent counsellor. An ambitious, school-wide wellbeing strategy – encompassing physical, emotional and mental health components, is designed to enhance the boys’ experience and better prepare them for adult life. Tutors, and Heads of Houses who oversee them, are increasingly trained and experienced in mentoring techniques. Our children deserve pastoral care which is more aspirational, and which is more deeply embedded in the culture of the school than statutory obligation alone requires. www.mtsn.org.uk

Radlett Learning Centre provides specialist GCSE maths support Tutoring centre in line with Government plans to expand specialist maths schools

M

aths is the most popular subject at A level, with almost 25 per cent of all students choosing to study the subject. It supports the transition to many STEM degrees, such as engineering and physics, and maths is one of the most sought after skills within the job market. However, as a nation, maths isn’t our top subject; more than a fifth of our 15-year-olds don’t know enough maths for everyday life. The ‘maths gap’ has been exacerbated by a shortage of maths teachers, which means in some schools the more challenging

5 8 M AY 2 0 1 8

curriculum is being taught by non-specialists. In its industrial strategy last January, the Government set out plans to expand the number of maths schools across the country. Now, it has announced an extra £350,000 in dedicated funding for the creation of specialist maths schools across the UK to drive up standards in schools and get more children studying maths. How will it work? Top universities can apply to open specialist maths schools for 16-19 year olds to help more young people learn from the best mathematicians in the country. This will encourage

“More than a fifth of our 15-year-olds don’t know enough maths for everyday life”

5 ways Mathnasium can help support your child’s maths learning more students to study maths and open up a wide range of options for future study, training and work. The strategy builds on the success of two specialist maths schools that are already seeing outstanding results in maths – Exeter Mathematics School and King’s College London Mathematics School. In addition, Cambridge Mathematics School is due to open in 2020. It will be led by Cambridgeshire Educational Trust, in partnership with St John’s College, Cambridge. In the meantime, Mathnasium Learning Centres have decided to extend the tutoring programme at their Radlett learning centre to accommodate students at GCSE level. At Mathnasium, students are taught by specially trained maths instructors who utilise the Mathnasium Method™ to go beyond traditional maths tutoring to develop real understanding and build a love for maths. UK Director of Mathnasium Learning Centres, Steve Felmingham, commented: “Mathnasium’s expert instructors look at different ways of approaching the same problem to help develop independent thinking skills. Students are also taught how the rules work so that they fully understand, not just memorise, them.” All Mathnasium, students start by taking a unique customised assessment which pinpoints

their specific learning needs. The Centre Director then creates a customised learning plan designed to close any educational gaps, which can be shared with the student’s school maths teacher for continuity. The instructors then work through the learning plan with each student in a way that makes sense to them. Says Steve: “With one-to-one tutoring, the tutor tends to do much of the work; explaining a concept to the child, giving an example, and then showing them how they’d work out the problem. But it is better for learning, and less intimidating, for the student to work in an environment where they can process new concepts in their own time without the pressure of constant one-to-one involvement. The results speak for themselves — showing measurable changes in attitude, confidence, and school progress, as well as reducing stress.” This approach helps students catch up if they are behind at school, as well as giving them a “preview” of maths concepts to prepare them for sixth-form, university, and beyond. The Radlett centre is situated at 289 Watling Street and offers maths tuition for children aged six to 16. For more information, visit: www.mathnasium.co.uk or call 01923 388641.

When looking to help support their children’s learning - perhaps leading up to a school entry exam or the 11-plus - many parents opt for the traditional one-to-one tutor. However, experts agree that small group tuition, where children work alongside peers, often works better than one-to-one tutoring. Here’s five ways Mathnasium can help support your child’s maths learning: Equates maths with fun Children need a learning environment where they feel secure. At Mathnasium, children quickly make friends with others in their group and realise that they are not alone in needing a bit of extra help. They come to enjoy the sessions and look forward to coming each week. Targets only the areas your child struggles with All Mathnasium students take a unique customised assessment which pinpoints their individual learning needs. Tutors then design a customised learning plan designed to close any gaps, which can be shared with your child’s school maths teacher for continuity. Fosters independent thinking and builds confidence At Mathnasium, your child will work in a small group where they have the space to process new learning without the pressure of constant one-to-one tutor involvement. Makes maths an interactive experience Children learn best by doing, not by listening. By turning a difficult mathematical problem into a challenge - a race against other students, for example - children often grasp it better. Mathnasium’s expert tutors look at different ways of approaching the same problem to help develop independent thinking skills. Students are also taught why the rules they’re learning work so that they fully understand, not just memorise, them. Embraces flexible learning At Mathnasium, learning is more flexible. Students can drop in, unscheduled, several times per week to work on their bespoke learning plan. Mathnasium will also help with homework, taking away the frustration felt by parents having to think back to maths concepts that they perhaps haven’t revisited for 20 years or more!

Westbrook Hay A wonderful education

he start of school is a big step in a child’s life and also in that of its parents. There is much debate about when is the right age to start being taught, but here at Westbrook Hay we feel that it is obvious; it is when the child is ready. Children can come to us in the term in which they turn 3, some will come from nurseries, others straight from home, while some will choose to remain at the local nursery and join us in Reception, when full time school begins. In our purpose-built Lower School, children benefit from a secure setting, with its own playgrounds, and advantageous teacher: pupil ratios. The aim is to provide a gentle start to life here, building on children’s existing skills. After two years or so in our Nursery, children move to Reception and this is the stage at which we see most children make the break through to literacy and numeracy. One of the aspects that most appeals here is that the curriculum that underpins all the learning in the Nursery is delivered through children playing while they are learning. The subtlety involved requires skilled planning and delivery, but does mean that children largely remain blissfully unaware that they are being taught at this early stage. The setting has to be exciting for children, sustaining their interest and one that offers sufficient variety to make every day an enjoyable challenge. Give a child the opportunity to discover that the 10 coloured blocks they have can be sorted

6 0 M AY 2 0 1 8

into a variety of groups and then built into a threedimensional shape and the seeds of mathematical knowledge are sown in a practical manner, which has to be better than sitting there barking out the rote order of numbers in a robotic fashion that demonstrates little of value. The modern child expects to be engaged by what they are doing and here at Westbrook Hay we believe that we provide children with the best start to their learning journey. As children progress through the school, parents sole desire for their children’s happiness is gradually replaced by a desire for their children to pass an entrance test. The success of this transition is best described as academic progress with a smile. Given the diverse requirements of various schools’ testing arrangements, children are prepared for specific tests for target schools. This comes on the back of exam preparation and familiarisation, with every child getting used to revising for and sitting exams twice a year as part of our annual exam programme. The best preparation for exams is obviously to be well-taught and we have the advantage that from Year 5 and beyond, all lessons are taught by subject specialists, which is one of the reasons why we have an enviable record of scholarship awards and are proud of placing our children in an independent school of their choice. In an increasingly pressurised world, we do all this and still retain the smile! www.westbrookhay.co.uk

OUT & ABOUT

A Real Turkish Delight W

hat Can I say about Okka Café Eatery? A total hidden gem with amazing food, beautiful ambiance and staff that can’t do enough for you. Visiting a Turkish restaurant was a first for my husband and I to experience, but it certainly won’t be our last. The owner Deniz Ash and his staff couldn’t have given us a warmer welcome as we arrived, and the fact it was a Saturday night – the lighting, chilled music vibes and feel of the restaurant made us feel we were in for lovely night ahead. We started by ordering a number of starters to share between us including grilled halloumi, authentic Turkish sausage and a number of dips with homemade hot pitta bread. For our main courses we both opted for Turkish Comfort Food kebabs including lamb and chicken and finished by squeezing in a dessert to share together. I can honestly say every mouthful was beautifully cooked, hot, fresh and full of flavour and I tasted best chicken kebab I have ever had! The staff were very attentive – they didn’t rush us between courses, were topping up our hot pitta bread at all times and never kept us waiting for a refresh on drinks. It was so nice to go somewhere different and it was a real new food experience for us. I will say every portion size was very generous and there was so much food we never finished it all. My meal was matched up with a beautiful tasting prosecco and being someone who loves bubbles the size of the glass was very agreeable as well! 6 2 M AY 2 0 1 8

Everything was beautifully presented, the atmosphere was buzzing. I would agree that our experience was excellent– and I would recommend over and over. Deniz was proud to tell us that all the ingredients are fresh, seasonal and always locally sourced where possible. He describes their menu as just straight forward, unpretentious food, freshly prepared with no fuss. Okka is open for breakfasts with everything on offer from toast and porridge, the Full Monty to eggs benedict. Also worth a visit for lunch including Okka Burgers, fishcakes and mixed meze sharing boards – or even if you just fancy catching up with friends for a large hot cup of coffee. Based right in the heart of Harpenden, this is a must visit for all and has something for everyone. Okka Cafe Eatery, 62 High Street, Harpenden, 01582 763975, www.okkacafeeatery.com

The season of colour T

his Summer promises to be packed with bright and bold vibrant colours. After what has felt like the longest Winter ever we need to inject a massive dose of colour into our lives and the Spring/Summer 2018 fashion trends are nothing if not bright, bold and beautiful. Black however did not make the list as one of the must-have colours in your wardrobe this Summer. The colour black is often every woman’s default, her go-to colour, the one colour she can rely on. But what if I told you that black doesn’t suit everyone. Infact if black isn’t your colour then you can expect to look tired, washed out, older, your skin tone to look dull and sallow when you are wearing it. Whilst some people think by wearing black it projects a dominance or a strong personality it can make you hide behind the colour and therefore hiding who you really are or want to be. Summer is your time to shine, now is the perfect time to invest in getting your colours done. By knowing the right colours for your skin tone, you can instantly look younger, more radiant and healthier. It also makes shopping all that more easier, as you focus on your colour palette and no longer have to consider whether the colour suits you or not. This Summer designers raided the pantone colour chart for pulsating primary colours, tomato red, yellow and a fresh green took centre stage. But colours will take two opposed directions: on one side towards a strong, vibrant palette, on the other towards pastel hues for an ethereal look. On the opposition, sugary almond feminine shades of pastels such as the palest pink, green and of course colour of the season lilac. It is a great time to add some colour into your wardrobe and use brighter colours as highlights for the darker colours that make up your current wardrobe. It’s amazing what a red belt can do to a

pair of jeans with a white top tucked in and a navy blazer over the top. Trying buying sandals in a colour that tones well with a summer dress, orange or tan sandals with a khaki dress will freshen up the dress and your style. If you are feeling brave then wearing this season’s ice cream colour palette in a two piece suit could crown you the most stylish guest at this year’s wedding reception. A great way to bring a little sunshine to your wardrobe is by wearing a canary yellow dress for that birthday lunch with your family, you will shine brighter than the sun. So whilst this season is full of colour, come out of your black rut and dare to be bolder with your colour choices. It won’t just guarantee a fresher style and look but it will brighten up your daily mood! Nina Whitehead, Personal stylist & image consultant providing expert advice across Hertfordshire and London. #Beauty that follows your heart. The BYONIK® - Pulse Triggered Laser The first ever skin rejuvenation system that is guided by your pulse.

A treatment for everyone…. The BYONIK® is just as beneficial for those in their mid-twenties and thirties as a preventative measure, as well as those of us that are on the other side of the forties and are looking for the elusive pain free fountain of youth.

How it works…

T

he future is pain free, chemical free and with no needles. Riverbanks Wellness is proud to launch our new premium skincare system BYONIK®. This rejuvenating treatment not only helps to plump your skin but also improves texture by harnessing the power of plants, medical knowledge and your own heart-beat, to produce optimum results. As we age, the cell processes, which are responsible for keeping our skin looking young, start to slow down combine this with stress as well as environmental damage, our skin can no longer hide the effects of the passing of years. The BYONIK® - Pulse Triggered Laser, has forged a new path in anti-ageing between professional cosmetology and medicine. Guided by your pulse, this patented method allows for a non-invasive, pain free, non-surgical lifting treatment with the aim of visibly reducing signs of skin ageing as well as treating skin conditions such as rosacea, acne and healing scar tissue it will also help with dry skin, scars, fine lines, dermatitis, psoriasis, large pores, melasma, dehydration, cystic acne. Let’s talk about Telomeres – you can picture them as being like the ends of a shoelace (they become frayed once we get older). Every time a cell divides the telomeres become shorter and shorter until they are gone. Most cells can replicate approximately 50 times before the telomeres become too short. At this point the cell simply ages and is no longer able to replicate. Some researchers believe that telomeres are the “secret to longevity”. The BYONIK® treatment protects the telomeres, slows down the aging process and is therefore is considered to be “true antiaging”.

The BYONIK® - Pulse Triggered Laser is the world’s only system that repairs skin at a cellular level and locks in hydration at the same time. By stimulating cell processes and introducing special hyaluronic acid gels with antioxidants into the skin. Elastin can move more freely, elasticity improves, the skin receives intensive moisture, gains volume and contours become more defined. The BYONIK® Pulse Triggered Laser adapts its frequency to your pulse during the entire treatment. With every beat of the heart, it releases its energy into the skin. This allows the antioxidants in the hyaluronic acid gel to enter directly into the skin cells. The combined release of red and near infrared light ensures that the energy is transferred to all layers of the skin simultaneously.

The treatment … We prepare the skin by double cleansing, then applying an enzyme peel to ensure the skin is as clean and free of debris as possible. A second round of cleansing ensures that the skin is completely free of oils. There are three sets of laser application, each lasting between 5 and 10 minutes. Before each application, our unique Hyaluronic Acid Formulation is applied and massaged deeply into the skin. For the last element of the treatment, we generously apply BYONIK® SEAL – a gel that contains a maximum number of ceramides, rehydrating the skin and protecting from environmental stresses. No down time, just plump beautiful glowing skin that will be admired. Dr Ravi Jain

A

wards season is done and dusted for another year, but the glam doesn’t have to stop now the red carpets have been rolled up and the gowns returned to the ateliers. You can emulate A-list glitz by trying your hand at the hair and make-up looks of the stars - and for significantly less than the price of a designer dress. Here, we hand out the gongs for the beast beauty looks of the season, and ask the experts for their advice on how to get the Hollywood look at home...

Best curls: Jennifer Lawrence To complement her stunning Dior disco ball dress at the Oscars, Jennifer Lawrence opted for Seventies-inspired curls. Award-winning hairdresser Lee Stafford has this hair how-to. “For Jennifer Lawrence’s voluminous curls, opt for a wand with a medium sized barrel like my Rainbow Shine Wand. Section your hair into two and work from the back of your head towards the front. For this look you want to curl even sections of hair, roughly one-inch, away from the face. Once you’ve finished curling, take a pea sized amount of hair wax and rub between your hands and comb the wax through the hair. This will give you matte texture a la J-Law.” Lee Stafford Rainbow Shine Wand, £29.99 7 4 M AY 2 0 1 8

Best blush: Emma Stone “This was a power blush moment. I was inspired by the unabashedly high glamour and powerful feeling of the late Seventies and early Eighties - a time when women wore strong, modern looks,” explains Rachel Goodwin, Nars celebrity make-up artist who did Emma Stone’s Oscars look, starting with a base of Nars Natural Radiant Longwear Foundation. “I mirrored the pink colour blocking in Emma’s suit and applied the Nars Wanted Cheek Palette high on the cheeks blending up toward the eye,” Goodwin explains. Best lipstick: Lupita Nyong’o For the Baftas, make-up artist Nick Barose was inspired by Lupita Nyong’o’s latest movie role. “She’s wearing all black, I wanted the make-up to feel regal and fierce. The ‘panther eyes’ is a nod to her movie Black Panther,” the make-up artist says. “Dramatic graphic liner that looks cat-like adds so much toughness and attitude, and when paired with perfect elegant red lips, it gives the classic, feminine red lips a fun and tougher attitude.” Barose recommends Lancome’s Caprice shade to emulate this bold look: “Apply two coats for intensity.”; Lancome L’Absolu Rouge in Caprice, £25.50

Best up-do: Zendaya American actress Zendaya is a real red carpet chameleon, constantly switching up her hair; but for the Oscars she went with a super-sleek, scraped back chignon. Hair stylist and Viviscal Ambassador Neil Moodie offers his advice on updos: “A lot about putting hair up is having grip on the hair itself. Don’t have it too clean as it will be smooth and slippy. I recommend a little bit of root backcombing as this gives support as you’re putting it up. “For a neat, tight up-do, I always recommend spraying hairspray onto the brush so as you’re brushing the hair it distributes evenly and gives hair grip. Pins and grips are essential. Bend the end of the pin over and create a little hook so if it starts to slip out the hook will grip to the hair. I also suggest using a matte texture spray at the roots.” Windle and Moodie Sculpture Hairspray, £20

KATE HUDSON ON ATHLEISURE The actress and Fabletics founder speaks to Katie Wright.

W

hile many actresses dabble in fashion design with the odd collaborative collection here or there, Kate Hudson has become a fully-fledged fitnesswear mogul with her hugely successful Fabletics brand - which later this year celebrates five years in business, and has just opened its first UK retail space. “We like calling it a presence, because it’s not really one of our stores,” the actress explains, curled up on a chintz armchair in a posh London hotel (she’s in the city for the launch). “My best girlfriend here, Stephanie [Burrows], opened her new studio called POPfit, so it seemed fitting that I would put some of our product in there and have a presence.” Fabletics now has 1.2 million members - who have signed up to get monthly deliveries of workout gear - and 24 stores in America, in addition to the UK opening. So while Hudson, 38, was in town, we sat down with the actress and mum-of-two to talk all things fashion and fitness... You’re launching the new Fabletics retail space in London at a time that’s pretty challenging for high street retailers - why now? “For us, it’s a little bit different because we’re a

7 8 M AY 2 0 1 8

digitally native brand. Being a predominantly online brand allows us to be able to take opportunities to test the market, and what we found was that when we strategically placed stores in places where we had a lot of activity, our customers became even more engaged. They wanted to go to the store, they wanted to touch and feel, they wanted the shopping experience. It’s something that actually grows our brand, it doesn’t take away from our brand. So it’s worked the opposite in a climate now where retail is struggling.” This October will mark five years of Fabletics do you have ambitions for where the brand will be in another five years from now? “Yeah, of course, shoot for the stars, right?! It’d be great in five years to be the biggest athleisure line out there! That being said, I think our focus, as much as it is on growth - which is important for any company - it’s really about perfecting our quality. Focusing on quality and fashion first is what we’re really all about, and we know that’s what our customer loves. So that for me is always the most important thing to focus on.” A selection of Fabletics clothing is now available in store at POPfit studio (wearepopfit.com).

COVER UP TO KEEP SAFE THIS SUMMER There may be clouds in the sky but that doesn’t mean your skin is safe!

T

hat’s the message skin experts are hoping to get across as summer approaches and people start shedding their shirts in an attempt to get their annual sun tan. With Sun Awareness week taking place from May 14 to 20, dermatologists are taking the opportunity to highlight the dangers of spending too much time in the sun. And they are keen to point out that it doesn’t have to be ‘a scorcher’ before people should start taking protective action. “When the sun is blasting down everyone knows the drill by now,” explained Dr Crichlow a consultant dermatologist at Spire Harpenden Hospital. “The danger is when there is cloud cover or a breeze that is making everything appear cooler. Clouds reduce the amount of ultraviolet A and B radiation that reaches the earth’s surface and our skin, but they don’t stop the damaging rays. Clouds block more visible light than ultraviolet radiation,” she explained. “Admittedly there will be ‘summer days’ when it is pouring it down with rain and the clouds are so thick and grey that your umbrella and raincoat should give all the cover you need but, basically, if you can see without artificial light, there is sufficient UV radiation and your skin is in danger.” Government figures show skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the UK and rates continue to rise with at least 100,000 new cases diagnosed each year resulting in approximately 2,500 people deaths. So how do you apply sun cream? A recent British Association of Dermatologists survey showed that 70% of people were not applying sun cream adequately. Dr Crichlow advises “sun cream (at least

8 4 M AY 2 0 1 8

factor 30) should be applied at least 15 minutes prior to sun exposure and then reapplied every two hours. Dr Crichlow added: “In the case of young children if it is warm enough for them to be playing out in shorts and tee shirts then the sun is usually strong enough to merit covering them in a protective cream or lotion. Please don’t forget that the sun is at its most intense between 11am and 3pm.” “It is always better to be safe than sorry and my advice would be that if you are outdoors in summer take care. Just because you can’t feel the burn doesn’t mean you aren’t burning!”

Top tips for looking after your skin in the sun • Wear protective clothing – the tighter the weave the better the protection. • Use SPF 30+ /broad spectrum UVA sunscreen and re-apply every two hours. • Never use sunscreen to increase the amount of time you can spend in the sun. • Wear on a wide brimmed hat that covers your ears and the back of your neck. Dr Sharon Crichlow is a Consultant Dermatologist at Spire Harpenden Hospital who sees the full range of skin diseases in adults, specialising in skin lesions and moles, and treats inflammatory skin conditions, allergies and skin cancer. With regular clinics available at Spire Harpenden, Dr Crichlow provides a confidential and comfortable environment for all her patients. Why fitting energy rated replacement double glazing is a no brainer

W

ith energy prices at an all-time high and over time set to rise higher, even UK one bed flat owners would benefit from having “A+” rated energy efficient windows installed, especially when done in conjunction with draught proof, thermally efficient doors. Consequently the larger the property you own, the greater your energy savings are going to be if you decide to have energy saving, energy rated double glazing fitted, given it costs exponentially more to heat a premises the larger it gets. Many UK homes were fitted with “first generation” double glazing over 20-30 years ago, which whilst revolutionary then, is now (in today’s terms) dreadfully old hat and not very energy efficient. Many home owners have improved 9 0 M AY 2 0 1 8

their older larger properties by having cavity wall insulation and loft insulation fitted, but have not got round to fitting modern thermally broken double glazing. There is a range of genuinely “A+” rated fenestration products available, be they made using aluminium, UPVC or wooden frames. One cannot under estimate how much more energy efficient these energy saving products are when you compare them to single glazed windows and even earlier generations of double glazing. As an example, many UK homes were fitted years ago with silver anodised aluminium double glazing within hardwood frames, with some home owners subsequently reporting occasional condensation on the inside frames on cold winter mornings. This condensation can be caused by various factors like insufficient ventilation and/or heating within a room, and secondly by the fact older double glazing products did not have a “thermal break”. Nowadays most high quality aluminium windows have a polyamide thermal break between the inner and outer frames which prevents the external cold surface of the outer window pane meeting the warm surface of the inner window pane, hence why today you can purchase “A” rated thermally broken aluminium double glazing as well as “A+” rated UPVC double glazing, and even “A++” energy rated UPVC triple glazing. Whatever material double glazing frames are made of, the other crucial element of an energy efficient double glazing system is the sealed unit. Most energy saving double glazed windows need a sealed unit with a centre-pane U-Value (a measure of thermal efficiency) of about 1.2 W/m2K to enable it to achieve an overall energy rating of “A+” when combined with the gaskets and window frames. Consequently the glass sealed unit specification is critical to the overall energy performance of double glazed windows. In between the two panes of glass (usually each 4mm thick) is an air gap of 16mm to 20mm. These two panes are separated by a “WarmEdge” spacer bar to prevent thermal transference. This vacuum gap is then usually filled with 90% Argon or Krypton which basically helps retain warmth generated by the property’s heating system on cold winter days and helps keep out excess heat on hot summer days. For example, double glazing firms like independent manufacturers and installers Hazlemere Window Company of High Wycombe use a high specification of glass as standard in their sealed units for their replacement windows. On the external pane they use an Eco clear low iron glass with no “green” colouring, which allows more

THE DETAILS To find out more about energy rated windows and draught proof replacement doors contact the independent fenestration experts at Hazlemere Window Company for free help and advice or no obligation consultation and/or quote on 01727 238658 or visit www.hazlemere.co.uk

light and heat into a room (Solar Gain). This clear glass reduces the amount of artificial light required, thereby saving on electricity bills. On the internal pane they use a high performance low emissivity softcoat glass, a product which has a special coating on the internal side of the inside pane, which helps retains heat that has been generated by the central heating system or by solar gain, or both! Softcoat glass has a highly neutral appearance with optimal solar heat gain, thermal insulation and light transmission to provide the highest Window Energy Rating (WER) performance. The WER scheme is the UK Government backed method of assessing and ranking the energy efficiency of a complete window. Taking into account its U-Value, solar gain and air infiltration, the scheme allows straight forward comparison of the energy efficiency of different windows, with an “A++” rating being the best and “C” rating being the minimum replacement windows must achieve. This new minimum standard of energy efficiency came in after far back as 1st October 2010 when revised Building Regulations make it a requirement that any property owner replacing one or more windows must comply with. The reality is that “C” rated windows are exceptionally thermally efficient when compared to first generation double glazing and single glazed windows, and provide a level of thermal efficiency that most UK house holders would give their right arm for, given the amount of energy they will save the property owners. Those with larger homes that have thermally inefficient windows and doors who want to future proof their homes against rising energy bills therefore need to replace their old draughty windows with modern energy rated double glazing. Given the additional costs of heating larger homes, fitting technologically advanced replacement double glazing is an absolute no brainer.

CEDARWOOD S et within a generous mature landscaped plot with views across the open Cheshire countryside Cedarwood offers a contemporary rural residence completed to the highest possible specification. The brief was to create a timeless yet elegant design, which connected with the surrounding landscape. Nestled deep within the established plot the simple series of refined linear buildings blend seamlessly and capture the innate natural beauty of their setting. Strategically positioned the buildings provide an array of landscaped courtyards each with its own distinct character. Constructed from the highest quality natural materials the buildings are designed to provide a healthy and sustainable living environment, highly insulated and filled with light. The large panels of recessed glazing which adorn the elevations provide panoramic views across the site whilst creating a series of bright internal living spaces. The purity of the roof forms are further enhanced by the use of recessed guttering and concealed down-pipes. Constructed from a rigid steel frame the buildings are clad externally in western red cedar, which has a superior natural durability and resistance to moisture, decay and insect damage. Selected for its warm textured grain and rich colour cedar has an inherent quality that has been proven to retain its appearance for several decades. The use of cedar provides a strong visual connection and roots the buildings within its landscape. The buildings themselves are highly thermally insulated using sustainable wood-fibre board that not only reduces heat loss but also gives protection from overheating in the summer months. the building construction is highly breathable and vapour permeable protecting the building fabric and providing a naturally healthy living environment. What can hydrotherapy do for you?

W

ater has been used as an effective natural treatment for pain and illness for thousands of years. However, many of us are still unfamiliar with the healing effects of a hydrotherapy pool and the hugely positive impact it has on our mental and physical wellbeing. Origin, the UK’s longest established swimming pool company, has helped hundreds of families to bring the healing powers of a hydrotherapy pool into the comfort of their own home, as well as installing the world-famous pool at the Stoke Mandeville Hospital in Buckinghamshire. With over 35 years’ experience, the multi-award winning company answers some frequently asked questions about this life-enhancing choice.

What is hydrotherapy? A hydro pool works by stimulating touch receptors on the skin using the motion of the water to relieve muscles. This type of physiotherapy was first discovered in 2000BC when ancient Egyptians 9 8 M AY 2 0 1 8

recognised the therapeutic benefits of bathing in warm water. Over 4,000 years later, doctors and physiotherapists still recommend hydrotherapy as an effective treatment for a number of conditions.

What are the health benefits of hydrotherapy? Hydrotherapy has many benefits, from treating major physical illness and injuries to improving general health and well-being. A hydro pool can be invaluable in helping with muscular conditions such as arthritis, rheumatism, fatigue, back pain and other conditions caused by inflammation. In addition, swimming and bathing in a hydrotherapy pool has been proven to help those suffering with long-term illnesses or those in need of pain relief. Hydro pools are often used to help physically disabled people and those with learning disabilities to exercise. It can also be used for rehabilitation by convalescent people.

“A hydro pool works by stimulating touch receptors on the skin using the motion of the water to relieve muscles”

Anna’s Story Our unique understanding of hydrotherapy made us the perfect choice for Anna’s mother Jan when she selected Origin to install a specially equipped hydrotherapy pool for her daughter. Anna, who sustained a significant brain injury during birth and suffers from dystonic quadriplegic cerebral palsy, has enjoyed swimming from a young age. After trying hydrotherapy at a local swimming pool, her mother Jan realised that it could help improve her enormously, adding greatly to her strength and stamina.

Hydrotherapy is also an effective way for people of all ages to get fit and healthy and is proven to improve cardiovascular fitness, as well as strengthening and restoring muscles. As well as its physical benefits, hydrotherapy can have a positive impact on a person’s psychological well-being and is proven to promote relaxation and reduce blood pressure. It also encourages the production of endorphins, a natural stress fighter, and can help to relieve anxiety and stress.

What do I need to consider when installing a hydrotherapy pool? A hydrotherapy pool construction requires specialist design, knowledge and experience and must to be tailored to the needs of an individual. This will dictate the planning and design, the equipment required, and the water and air temperatures needed. There may also be additional access and safety requirements to be considered. At Origin, we believe it’s the smaller details that make the difference. We take time to understand how the hydrotherapy pool may help you, both now and in the future if your symptoms change.

Hydrotherapy water temperatures of 33°C to 34°C allows you to benefit from the heat of the water, from relaxing muscles and improving muscle length to reducing pain and muscle spasms. You can also enjoy water-based exercises to improve core strength, global strength, coordination and cardio vascular fitness. Many of these benefits aren’t achievable at lower water temperatures, so a hydrotherapy pool design needs advanced equipment to manage the high levels of water evaporation in the environment to stop condensation, mould or deterioration of the building. While a hydro pool is crucial for pain relief and treating major physical problems, it isn’t just the water that’s important. For those suffering from certain conditions, the lighting, air heating, internal building finishes and even sounds can have an impact on comfort, and these are all considerations that we take into account during the planning process. Finally, it is important to think about the maintenance of your pool once it has been installed. Your pool is for life, and we understand the maintenance this requires. For many of our customers, we look after this final stage of the process, from routine maintenance to emergency support, winter-proofing your building, and water health checks. For full details of all Origin’s pools and pool houses or to ask any questions, get in touch with Origin on 01895 453996 or email info@originpools.co.uk

After consulting physiotherapists and her swimming instructor, it was decided that Anna should have a pool of her own in order to continue her therapy and Origin was a natural choice. Plans for the pool were submitted and accepted and the building was created at the family’s property alongside the family’s busy lifestyle. Today, ready access to a suitable pool continues to have a positive impact on Anna’s life and she enjoys having friends and family round to enjoy the pool with her and her siblings. Although Anna will always have difficulties as a result of her disability, swimming remains a firm passion of hers and she feels stronger, fitter and more skillful in her lifechanging pastime. Anna’s mother Jan summed up their experience of installing an Origin hydrotherapy pool: “Anna’s regular access to a pool has greatly benefited her quality of life, and that has made it all worth it.”

BEST Y

SEAT IN THE HOUSE

WORDS: GABRIELLE FAGAN

ou just know when you’ve found ‘the one’. Supportive, and always there for you when you need comfort, a snuggle or just to relax. I’m not talking about a partner - at least, not a human one, but the sometimes more tricky matter of getting the right seating partner; a sofa. But with so much to consider, from size through to shape and colour, never mind sorting through a seemingly endless array of ranges, finding the perfect match for you and your home can be daunting. People often go to enormous lengths choosing a sofa, because it’s the most important piece of furniture in a living room. It can literally make or break the look of a setting. A lot of life happens on a sofa, so it’s worth taking time to find ‘the one’.

Follow the experts’ tips for a seatmatch made in heaven... GET THE MEASURE I’m a fan of sofas which are big enough to lounge around on and are super comfy, with deeper seat cushions than average, so they’re inviting to curl up on. Top tips: Measure your room before shopping, so you choose a sofa to fit the space and scale of the room. When you have one in mind, make a paper template of it and lay it out in the room to help you visualise the reality of its size, as display sofas always look smaller in large showrooms. Ensure it will fit, especially if there are awkward stairs or narrow doorways, although bolt-on arms or removable legs are solutions if space is tight.

CHECK OUT PATTERN Don’t be afraid to be adventurous and really push the boundaries when it comes to choosing seating it’s outdated to pick a matching sofa, armchair and footstool. Create an eclectic, customised look by mixing colours and patterns, so a sofa upholstered in a plain fabric could be paired with a leather armchair, or a patterned footstool. Top tips: Don’t be led purely by design. Comfort is key, so try out a few before you decide. For instance, deep-seated sofas can be uncomfortable for short people, while those who love a squashy sofa for snoozing and sprawling will struggle with a lean, low-backed contemporary model. People are becoming more adventurous in their decor, so clashing statement patterns and bold colours are starring. Pair a sofa with a bold fabric design with a plain backdrop, or if you love bold wallpapers, create a feature wall first and then match the sofa’s colour to the wall. 1 0 4 M AY 2 0 1 8

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION In large rooms, small sofas can look lost. Generally, high-backed sofas with upholstered arms dominate more and need more space around them, while a low-back slimmer sofa can be more discreet, and won’t block a view if placed in front of windows. L-shaped sofas can work well in a compact space, or act as room-dividers in an open plan area. Intricate fabric patterns and sofas customised with different details in piping, mixed fabrics or a choice of feet, are increasingly finding favour. While bold patterns bring a room to life, my preference is for large sofas upholstered in neutral tones or leather, which suit any decor theme.

“A lot of life happens on a sofa, so it’s worth taking time to find ‘the one’”

MIRROR MIRROR…

From maximising space and light to adding a touch of fun, mirrors really are a style gift that keeps on giving. Sam Wylie-Harris eyes up some of the best.

Beaded Antique Mirrors, from £99-£175 each, Graham & Green (grahamandgreen.co.uk) If you don’t want the hassle of mounting, why not stand a full-length mirror against the wall? Especially if you use identical frames in different heights, you can highlight low-slung pieces such as a velvet pouffe or decorative chest, and still have the height to show off a feature wall. John Lewis Concrete Mirror Range, £595, John Lewis Really want to make a statement? We love this range of oversized mirrors framed in concrete resin. Take some time to angle it correctly and tricks of the trade, such as reflecting light and opening up the room, can even create the illusion of an extra window.

rom creating eye-catching moments to adding interest to walls, mirrors are one of the easiest ways to style up a space - without having to spend a fortune or go to too much effort. Call it an interior design shortcut if you like, but a large mirror, whether that’s a full-length cheval or vintage piece hung like a picture, not only looks good but can be used to bounce light around the room, add depth and dimension and enhance other details in the room (and yes, even cover up an unsightly hole, mark or DIY mistake!). Of course, you may need a second pair of hands when it comes to hanging them (if you’re putting up something big and heavy, you’ll want to make sure it’s being done correctly and safely). But once you’ve nailed the mounting, you’ll be rewarded with a dizzying display.

Here are some of our favourites to choose from now... Bluebell Wall Mirror, £179.99, My Furniture (my-furniture.com) Perfect for a snug room, or dark, cosy corner or decadent dining room, this deep frame peppered with individual circular mirrors, would gorgeously reflect a chandelier, candelabra or French window to let the light stream in. 1 0 6 M AY 2 0 1 8

Porthole Mirrors, from £59-£170 each, Graham & Green (grahamandgreen.co.uk) A porthole wall mirror with convex glass can create an interesting illusion of depth. Pair the gently distressed style of these, with playful touches such as grouping them together, and you’ll create a statement feature that also reflects what’s hanging on the opposite side of the wall, to maximise a painting or hero piece. Blinds,

Shutters & Shades Y

ou need to decide whether you want your room bright and airy or more “buttoned up” and cosy. Do you want to block out light in the bedroom or hang a sheer fabric in your kitchen that lets the sun shine in? Are the windows you’re covering near the front door or facing the sunny side of the house? All of these factors will influence the styles and fabrics you choose.

BLINDS Blinds are best if you want tiltable slats that can be adjusted to let the sun shine in (or not). They offer a handsome, clean-looking custom fit and plenty of privacy. Prices for blinds generally climb in this order: vinyl, aluminum, faux wood (or textured vinyl) and wood. Insulating blinds help conserve energy and filter or block light, so they work hard for your money. Wider horizontal slats create the illusion of bigger windows and more space in apartments and small rooms. Vertical blinds work for windows that are wider than they are tall. They’re an ideal pick for picture windows with a sweeping view or across sliding glass doors. Blinds generally require more of a commitment to keep clean, because the slats attract dust and grime.

is gathered into billowy poufs make a high-style statement and are a dressy touch. • Blackout, with a room-darkening fabric, block out up to 100% of light and ideal for bedrooms and home cinemas. • Solar are made from a sheer weave that offers protection from harmful UV rays but don’t completely block your view. They are great for kids’ rooms, dining areas, and light-drenched offices. To keep them fresh and clean, you’ll need to hand-wash vinyl shades. Fabric shades should be vacuumed regularly and either spot-cleaned or sent out for professional cleaning.

SHADES

SHUTTERS

Shades are the answer if you’re looking for versatility and style. They provide more ways to create different looks and moods using texture, pattern, and fabric weight. • Woven wood (such as bamboo) offers full, naturallooking coverage, working well in conservatories where you may need to filter out the sun to read the newspaper or see your iPad screen. • Roman shades have soft, wide pleats that fold flat when raised by a cord. These are lovely for the dining or living room. Balloon, where the fabric

Shutters provide a chic and stylish alternative to blinds, and are a cost-effective way to completely update the look and feel of a room. They are more hygienic too as they simply wipe clean and don’t absorb the dust. There are three types of shutters: plantation, solid and café style. • Most people go for the plantation style, which have slats (also known as louvers) that rotate open and closed to control light levels. • Solid shutters are ideal for those wanting to create a more traditional look, and are designed to be folded back during the day and closed at night. • Café style shutters are popular in restaurants and cafes, hence the name - with this style, the shutters normally cover just the bottom half of the window. With tier-on-tier shutters, there are two sets of shutters, one above the other. You can open each set individually, which gives you more flexibility and more light control. These are ideal if you have larger bay window.
