Galvin brothers launch restaurant at Centurion Club, St Albans
T
wo of the UK’s most esteemed restaurateurs, Chris and Jeff Galvin, have just launched their first venture in the Home Counties at the impressive Centurion Club. Just opened, Galvin at Centurion Club will showcase the classic cuisine and timeless dining experience for which the brothers are renowned. Starting out in Baker Street with their first restaurant, Bistrot de Luxe, the Galvin brothers have been producing some of the UK’s finest French cooking for the past ten years, gaining a Michelin-star at Galvin at Windows and Galvin La Chapelle. Casual yet perfect dining is catered for at Galvin HOP, a Pub de Luxe in Spitalfields, while Galvin Demoiselle in Harrods gives shoppers a bijou break in classic French style. Two Galvin restaurants were opened in Edinburgh, The Pompadour and Brasserie de Luxe. The most recent addition to their culinary portfolio is Galvin at The Athenaeum in Piccadilly. The 84 cover Galvin at Centurion restaurant, which is open to the public, will stay true to the signature Galvin experience, offering a warm, welcoming and informal environment in opulent surroundings. Dining will be available in the main restaurant, bar or on the terrace, in addition to three adjoining private dining rooms, which will seat 12-14 guests each. The cooking is ingredient-led, with simplicity, passion and seasonality. Signature dishes include lasagne of Dorset crab with beurre Nantais and roast rump of Herdwick lamb, grilled Provençale vegetables & black olives together with well-balanced desserts such as Provence apricot & Valrhona chocolate soufflé. Lunch and dinner is available seven days a week and will also offer affordable two and three course set-menus. Inspired to embark on this project by his love of golf, Jeff Galvin comments, “I was initially introduced to Centurion Club a few years ago through my passion for

golf. The club itself has a relaxed, family friendly feel without compromising on detail or quality which echoes our own ethos at Galvin Restaurants. Very soon after meeting the owners I realised how ambitious their plan was; simply to create an exceptional, yet accessible and good value restaurant that would complement their already world-class golf facility. Over the last 2 years we have been planning Galvin at Centurion Club and are very excited by the result. We look forward to welcoming the public as well as Centurion Club members.” With a wealth of expertise, the launch of Galvin at Centurion Club sees the Galvin brothers bring their friendly and hospitable service, and informed, contemporary French dining, to the rural Hertfordshire countryside.

n October 2, 1950, the four-panel comic strip by 27-year-old Charles M. Schulz made its debut. Known as Peanuts, it eventually became one of the world’s most widely read comic strip turning its characters—Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Linus, Lucy, Peppermint Patty and Schroeder—into pop culture icons. “Snoopy’s appearance and personality have changed probably more than those of any of the other characters. As my drawing style loosened, Snoopy was able to do more things, and when I finally developed the formula of using his imagination to dream of being many heroic figures, the strip took on a completely new dimension.” – Charles M. Schulz, 1975
How did Peanuts come to be called Peanuts? “I don’t like the name of my strip at all. I wanted to call it Good Old Charlie Brown, but the person at the syndicate who selected Peanuts just picked it at random from a list of possible titles he jotted down. He hadn’t even looked at the strip when he named it. The syndicate compromised on Sunday, though. Once I rebelled and sent it in without any title. We finally agreed to put Peanuts at the top and include Charlie Brown and His Gang in the sub-title on Sunday.” – Charles M. Schulz, 1969 Following the 1967 Apollo 1 fire disaster, NASA officials contacted Charles Schulz to use Snoopy as their safety mascot. Schulz helped design a pin for the Silver Snoopy award, which was presented to aerospace workers for outstanding contributions toward safer spaceflight operations. Later, during the Apollo 10 mission (which served as the dress rehearsal for the historic Apollo 11 moon landing), NASA dubbed the lunar module “Snoopy” and the command module “Charlie Brown.” The official Limited Edition “Stars” published under license from Peanuts Worldwide LLC also features an official photograph from the NASA archives. Snoopy, received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame right next to the star of the creator of Peanuts comic strips, Charles M. Schulz. Snoopy happens to be the first fictional Beagle to be honoured with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The character was honoured with the star just 4 days before the movie’s premiere worldwide in November 2015. The famous comic had an audience of 355 Million people! 52 NOVEMBER 2016

r Ravi Jain launches new Hyaluronic Acid skin super-booster, Profhilo, at Riverbanks Wellness®. With next-level skin remodelling capabilities, and leading a new category in injectable treatments, this is no filler! Beyond plumping cheeks and filling wrinkles, cosmetic injectable treatments have evolved to actually achieve skin structural changes by stimulating the natural tissue and influencing the nature of our collagen and elastin production, orchestrating our skin’s behaviour. Moving modern developments forward, the new Profhilo treatment is based on savvy hyaluronic acid technology and has been formulated, in essence, as a bioremodeling skin enhancer, it’s in a different league entirely to ‘fillers’, more of a forefronter in the category of ‘skin super-boosters’. Cosmetic Physician and Medical Director of Riverbanks Wellness® Dr Ravi Jain, is Profhilo’s key opinion leader in the UK, he explains “It’s important to understand this is NOT a volumising dermal filler. It is also not mesotherapy. It sits between skinboosters and fillers as a Super Skin Booster in that it offers fantastic hydration but ALSO triggers collagen and elastin production, resulting in bioremodeling of the skin.” Uniquely, Profhilo combines both high molecular weight and low molecular weight Hyaluronic Acid creating a dual action that nourishes the dermal cells and actually remodels the skin (referred to as Bioremodeling). By directly delivering unique levels of hyaluronic acid, Profhilo hydrates from the inside out while simultaneously stimulating collagen and elastin production to tighten

lax skin, change skin quality and eliminate crepey-ness. The solution flows freely, integrating with subcutaneous tissue fluently, making it capable of rejuvenating areas that were previously a challenge, such as the neck, arms and forehead. There are multiple characteristics that qualify Profhilo’s revolutionary status. It is BDDE-free and treatment entails fewer injection points, limited discomfort and side-effects, less top-up sessions and longer-lasting results. “Our patients have been overwhelmed with their results from Profhilo” says Dr Jain “it’s a pretty quick treatment which achieves big improvements by accelerating the skin’s own capabilities.” At Riverbanks, Profhilo is customised for each individual, and two treatments (with a one-month interval between) are recommended for the optimal effect. Treatable areas include: • All areas of the face • The neck and décolleté • Arms Profhilo treatment takes approx. 30 minutes and results last from 4 to 6 months. Price starts from £850. THE DETAILS

he Starskin Applicator was inspired by the patting techniques of celebrity make-up artists, using a high-speed pulsating motion to deliver an airbrushed look. To give it a go, I start by squeezing some foundation on the back of my hand before dabbing it with the oval silicone sponge on the applicator, and then positioning the device against my cheek before switching it on. It’s tempting to move it around in circles, like I usually would with a brush, but by gliding it over my face using a sweeping movement, I find I use
up less product but end up with a beautifully even texture on my face. There are two speed settings - I use the slower one on tricky areas around my eyes, nose and chin, and the faster one everywhere else. The pulsating sensation’s really soothing, and my make-up looks so even and toned after using it that friends ask if I’ve invested in a new foundation. It’s about time, says Michele Scott-Lynch, the curly founder of haircare brand Boucleme (www.boucleme. co.uk). “When I was growing up, curly hair was largely ignored by the beauty industry. There was no advice on caring for curls, no curly role models and absolutely zero effective products on the market. Hairdressers would encourage you to straighten it, so you couldn’t even rely on them for tips,” she says. “The internet and social media changed all this: it became a mine of information as curly girls started sharing their daily routines and favourite products, and this strong global curly community just grew and grew.”

TOP TIPS FOR NATURAL CURLS Ready to banish your straighteners and let your barnet bounce free? Here are Michele Scott-Lynch’s top tips on embracing your natural curls... 1. The most important thing is to understand that frizz is a sign your hair lacks moisture - with proper hydration, frizz will transform into a wave/curl. A little bit of frizz is also your friend, as it helps give volume and shape to your curls.
2. Weekly deep conditioning helps boost moisture levels and if curls are dry, try leaving your conditioner in, rather than washing out. This, plus using a non-foaming (paraben and sulphate-free) hair cleanser, can be a game-changer.
3. At night, protect curls by tying them up in a loosely on top of your head. If your hair isn’t long enough, try using a hair net.
4. Sleeping on a silk pillowcase helps prevent frizz due to friction (it’s also great for a line-free face in the morning!).
5. Find a hairdresser who specialises in curls; they’ll have a greater understanding of the best products to use and how to dry/ style your hair. Curly hair is best cut dry, when you can see where the curls sit naturally. When wet, curly hair stretches and it’s harder to work out the natural spring factor. If a hairdresser mentions razoring your hair to lose bulk, run a mile. Fortunately, there are more and more curly hairstylists popping up. I go to a lady called Lindsey Hughes ‘Curl Whisperer’ (www.lindseyhughescurl whisperer.co.uk).

Top Products for Curly Hair Aquis Lisse Luxe Hair Towel Towel drying can add to the frizz, warns stylist Phil Smith, who has a Be Gorgeous Curly Locks range. “Instead, tilt your head forward and using a T-shirt, gently squeeze to remove any excess water.” Or invest in this Aquis Towel, which uses Aquitex fibres to quickly wick water away, meaning fewer breakages and less frizz. £30 (aquishair.co.uk)
OWAY Curly Potion Made from natural ingredients from a biodynamic eco farm in Italy, OWAY’s Curly Potion helps nourish hair to give the perfect mix of support, bounce and definition to curls. A pea-sized amount detangles and defines, while also naturally moisturising, strengthening and providing an intense anti-frizz action, leaving hair soft, shiny and gorgeous. £24 (www.oway.co.uk)
2
Boucleme cleanser, conditioner & gel Made with all natural active ingredients - no parabens or sulphates - the Boucleme three-step cleanse, condition and define system moisturises hair without the feeling of sticky residue. The cleanser’s non-lathering and, for those with very dry hair, it’s recommended you leave the conditioner on, before lightly drying hair with a T-shirt or the Boucleme Curl Towel (£25), and then popping on the gel. Once dry, simply scrunch for beautiful, shiny ringlets. Curl Cleanser, £15, Curl Conditioner, £17, Curl Defining Gel, £15 (www.boucleme.co.uk)

Goldwell Kerasilk Control Intensive Smoothing Mask Mark Leeson, Goldwell Kerasilk global creative ambassador, says: “Curly hair naturally lacks moisture, so it’s important to prep using a good quality conditioning product to help moisten the hair and scalp and smooth cuticles, making hair much more manageable. The Kerasilk Intense Smoothing Mask is the curly hair hero product; it smooths for long-lasting manageability and control and gives a beautiful, glossy shine.” Just 10 minutes is all it takes to work its magic. RRP £27.50, from Amazon or Goldwell salons nationwide (www.goldwell.co.uk/salonfinder)
Moroccanoil Curl Defining Cream Regis creative director, Kieron Fowles, says: “Curl serums and sprays will help with curl retention and keep hair looking glossy and full of life between salon visits.” Smooth Moroccanoil Curl Defining Cream through damp hair for curl definition. It’s quite a heavy cream - so a small amount’s all you need and make sure you spread liberally - but ideal for thick, wiry locks that need taming, and the effects can last at least a couple of days. £24.72 (www.regissalons.co.uk)

what to look out for Miss Harleen K Deol, Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon at Spire Harpenden Hospital, outlines practical advice about how to check your breasts and the signs to look out for
I
t is important to know how your breasts look and feel normally, so that if you notice a change, you can present to your doctor. Most women’s breasts change during the month and many women find selfexamination difficult or daunting. I therefore recommend a few simple ways of regularly checking your breasts: • In the bath or shower, flatten the fingers of one hand and slide firmly over the breast tissue, also checking for any lumps in the under-arm area (axilla). Is there a lump or thickening to the breast that feels different to the rest of the breast tissue?
Look at your breasts in the mirror once-a-month:
• Is there a discharge of fluid or blood from the nipple? • Do you have constant or persistent pain in the breast or in the arm-pit?
What do I do if I have one or more of these symptoms? If you have any of these symptoms I recommend you see your GP to be referred to a Breast Rapid Access diagnostic clinic. During the clinic visit you will be seen and examined by a Breast Surgeon who can then ensure a mammogram and/or ultrasound of the breasts is organised as needed and the results explained to you during your clinic visit. Any further testing will be explained as needed.
• Has there been a change in the size or shape of either breast? • Are there any new changes to the nipples, eg. inversion (change in the protrusion or flattening), rash around the nipple skin? • Are there any lumps bulging out of the skin or dimples in the skin?
Spire Harpenden offer a rapid access breast clinic where you will have a consultation with an expert consultant, as well as a mammogram or ultrasound. The results will be given to you then and there, and if you need any further investigations these will be arranged for you.
With your arms raised above your head look at the outline, shape and the bottom of the breasts.
To find out more about the services offered at Spire Harpenden, or to book your rapid access breast consultation call 01582 714 420 or email info@spireharpenden.com

REDUCING YOUR CARBON FOOTPRINT

As more of us begin to worry about our carbon footprint, employers and householders are increasingly realising that “sustainability” is becoming a very hot topic in both the working environment and the home.
M
ark Austin, Sales & Marketing Director for leading home improvement specialists Hazlemere Windows, whose Head Office is in High Wycombe in Bucks says “This is a subject that is growing in importance to employers. Thinking more about the future today is now an essential part of the planning process for businesses, as it can affect staff productivity, if the right impression is not given in the workplace.” As Mark says, “with the majority of us in the UK being householders we all realise the importance of protecting the environment for future generations, but thinking “green” at work will improve a company’s image, reduce its operating costs and impact positively on productivity

with a happier, healthier workforce. Plus there is 100% enhanced capital allowance in the first tax year on investments in energy saving equipment.” Some simple steps can help greatly with reducing energy usage. Use high efficiency fluorescent lights; more of the consumed energy is converted to usable light and less to heat, which also means less work for air conditioning units. Dimmable and individual controls help to reduce unnecessary usage, or consider automatic switching by movement sensor in open plan areas where practical. You can also lower energy use by making the most of the natural light available, rather than relying totally on artificial lighting. Having well insulated windows and doors can make a vast difference to any premises as each part of a window
and/or door contributes to its overall insulation, dependent on their quality, design of the seals and the thermal performance of the frames and type of double glazed unit. A building prone to heat gain can reduce reliance on the cooling system with the use of specialist paints. You could always go literally “greener”, the right trees and shrubs outside can provide shade for a building where heat gain is a problem and of course indoor plants aids air purification. Often overlooked, yet still an effective measure is to simply check your systems’ timers are adjusted to the optimum for how the building is actually used. Windows and doors that have the largest expanse of glass will naturally allow more light into the home and workplace, and therefore benefit the most from “solar gain”. Heat gained in this way reduces reliance on central heating, reducing both costs and emissions. In 2007, Hazlemere Window Company became the first company in the UK to design, manufacture and install a dual frame aluminium window system that achieved an ‘A’ Window Energy Rating, which was recognised by the Energy Saving Trust, who estimate that up to 20% of energy lost through un-insulated homes is through windows. Hazlemere’s Eco-friendly aluminium windows, apart from having a long life in use, once aluminium reaches the end of its life it can be infinitely recycled, so is highly positive material environmentally. Recycling aluminium uses just 5% of the energy needed to produce the original material, plus the finished product has all of the same qualities as the original, so can be recycled time and again. “Self-cleaning glass” for use on conservatory roofs or roof lantern lights is also beneficial for the environment, as only small amounts of cleaning agents are ever needed. This highly efficient self-cleaning glass called can be combined with other glass products in insulating glass
units to provide benefits such as thermal insulation, noise reduction, solar control and fire protection. In 2015, during their 30th Anniversary, Hazlemere introduced A+ energy rated double glazed UPVC casement windows as standard, plus also can offer a triple glazed A++ energy rated UPVC casement window that has a combined U-Value of 0.99 W/m2K. Such thermally efficient energy saving replacement windows are a great way to save energy and reduce heating bills. Other ways to reduce your carbon footprint include fitting washrooms with efficient low flush toilets, reduced
“A building prone to heat gain can reduce reliance on the cooling system with the use of specialist paints” flow taps and sensor taps to save on water consumption. Purchase energy efficient kitchen equipment as appliances are replaced, and even simpler; avoid overfilling kettles when preparing tea and coffee. Ensure any furniture you purchase is hardwearing and easy to maintain to ensure longevity plus do your bit for the environment/ those less fortunate by donating unwanted furniture, IT equipment and appliances to charity. So don’t be mean “go green”.

Conservation without compromise …
I
f you’re the owner of a period home built between the 1920s and 1940s you may have grown fond of the traditional steel windows commonly fitted to properties at this time. But pretty as they are, these windows come with a host of problems after many years of use – ill-fitting casements, faulty handles, condensation and draughts to name just a few. Often the only solution is to fit new double glazing, but many are wary of the high cost of steel replacement windows or the loss of aesthetic that tends to result from uPVC installations. Help is at hand though in the form of The Conservation Range from the Heritage Window Company, a range of slimline aluminium windows specifically designed to deliver all the benefits of modern double glazing without compromising the character of your property.
“Some friends don’t even notice we’ve had them done, and that’s exactly what we wanted!” The Conservation Range was the result of extensive consultation with conservation officers, and combines ultra-slim aluminium frames allowing the maximum amount of light in, with styling that mimics the minimalist sightlines of steel windows. As Heritage Sales Director, Ben Flatt points out, “Many of our customers want to update their windows, but they don’t want to lose that ‘period’ look.” And one customer recently said, “Some friends don’t even notice we’ve had them done, and that’s exactly what we wanted!” But it’s not all about appearance, the performance is outstanding too. Owners benefit from excellent heat retention and noise reduction as the latest in double glazed sealed units do their job. And an “A” Window Rating mean the Conservation Range meets all new Building 88 NOVEMBER 2016
Regulations. The multipoint locking system ensures that the windows are secure too, and additional security studs make certain that window casements, once locked in position, cannot be removed from the outside. Cleverly, Heritage frames are designed to fit both direct to brick or stone or into existing timber sub-frames. Thus it’s possible to remove the old metal casements and fit new without the need for extensive redecoration afterwards. If the survey shows that existing timber work is damaged or rotten beyond repair then new frames can be fashioned to match the originals. The frames are finished with a tough powder coated paint and customers can choose from over 200 interior and external colours to complement their chosen décor. Matching traditional handles and peg-stays complete the period effect. The Heritage Window Company has manufactured aluminium windows at its south London factory since 1978 and completed thousands of installations all over the south of England from terraced houses to stately homes. It’s built a reputation for quality products and customer service - windows are installed by directly employed fitters and the company also employs surveyors who carry out pre- and post-installation inspections to make sure that every job meets exacting quality standards. The result is a long list of satisfied customers who are only too happy to refer others, and a growing collection of testimonials which can be viewed at any of its showrooms in Beaconsfield, Dorking, Sevenoaks or Loughton.
