Tartan has taken the trophy as the biggest fashion trend for Autumn/ Winter this year. While tartan always enjoys a resurgence once the temperatures drop, this year particularly has seen fashion collections awash with the heritage check that channels British countryside chic.

A NEXT- GEN SOCIAL SPACE

The Hub on Verulam, a next generation social space has embedded itself into the St Albans and surrounding communities since it’s opening 2 years ago. Created by founders Alex Addison and Hannah Petrouis, located at 5 Verulam Road, the reimagined 6,000 sq. ft space has been designed to challenge what we think we know about hospitality, offering lifestyle interiors, coworking space, informal dining, event space and 2 screening rooms. It offers a new take on hospitality that is focused on community, experience and sustainability to meet the needs of today’s market. On site facilities include;

• The Open Kitchen: an intimate 30 cover restaurant with brunch, lunch and dinner options.

• The Yard: an all-season outdoor space, covered and heated in winter months equipped with an outdoor bar.

• Two screening rooms; The Terrace and The Box, providing a luxurious setting with 50 bookable seats to watch movies, sporting events and documentaries.

• Co-working memberships and a private members workspace.

The restaurant’s menu has been stripped of nutritionally lacking pub classics and filled with hearty and healthier brunch dishes, small and large plates. Gone are pints, with beer servings in European schooner glasses alongside a large and innovative low-and-no alcohol offering. With sustainability core to the venue’s offering, food waste from The Hub on Verulam is turned to compost within 24 hours using their on-site commercial composter, affectionately named ‘Colin’.

“Our mission is to shake up the way people socialise – our offering deliberately doesn’t fit in just one box. We’ve created a space to work and play, to watch sports, films, comedy and to learn and create. Yes, we serve 4-5% beers, but we also serve great low ABV options. We serve cocktails, and alongside them you’ll see low alcohol equivalents – no ‘mocktails’ around here – that taste just as good. We serve fresh Cornish day-boat fish, alongside sunday roasts and delicious bar nibbles. It’s all about giving people great options so they can make better choices for the odd, or regular, occasion as they want to.” Alex Addison, Co-Founder.

SUPERIOR : INFERIOR

A Class & Status in Roman Britain Exhibition at Verulamium Museum. Until 11 November

Anew thought-provoking exhibition at Verulamium Museum, SUPERIOR : INFERIOR seeks to get people talking by asking visitors to examine social class and status in Roman Verulamium and think about those concepts within society today.

The exhibition runs until November 11 and is guest curated by ancient historian Andrew Deathe.

Andrew said: “Social status was important to the Roman residents of Verulamium and this exhibition explores how they showed and used their social position.

“For me, the best history makes you think ‘What would I do if I was there?’, so we encourage visitors to think about how we view class today, how they would react in different social situations and how they would measure themselves against the ancient citizens?”

Visitors are taken on an interactive journey where they meet seven pairs of imagined inhabitants of ancient Verulamium whose stories vividly come to life through designs by local St Albans illustrator, Simon Maskell. Each pairing represents a different situation and uses archaeological objects, imagined conversations and other clues to enable visitors to decide who would have been perceived as higher status and who of lower status.

Catherine

Newley, Audience Development Manager at St Albans Museums, said: “This unique exhibition is part of our ‘Revisiting the Romans’ series of interventions at the museum. Regular visitors will know that you can explore the wonders of Roman life, be immersed in recreated Roman rooms and admire the craftsmanship of the intricate large-scale mosaics on display but through this intervention, visitors are encouraged to explore how the occupants of Roman Verulamium viewed their social class and status - and discover how it affected their everyday lives.

“It’s been a delight to work with Andrew on this incredibly insightful and absorbing project and we look forward to seeing how visitors perceive class and society.”

THE DETAILS

Verulamium Museum, St Michael’s Street, St Albans, AL3 4SW, is open Monday to Friday 10am – 4.30pm (last admission 4pm) and Saturday 11am –3.30pm (last admission 3pm). Admission charges apply. Visit stalbansmuseums.org.uk and follow @stalbansmuseums

PADDINGTON BEAR TAKES A SEAT AT WESTFIELD LONDON & CONNAUGHT VILLAGE

Fans of all ages can take a pew next to Paddington as STUDIOCANAL unveils a series of cute statues of the marmalade loving bear. Launched as part of Paddington Visits – Westfield London and Connaught Village are just two of 23 locations across the UK and Ireland.

The statues are being unveiled in cities, towns, and beauty spots to celebrate the forthcoming release of PADDINGTON IN PERU, arriving in cinemas on 8th November.

This new adventure will see Paddington return home to the Peruvian jungle to visit his beloved Aunt Lucy, now a resident at the Home for Retired Bears. With The Brown Family and Mrs Bird in tow, a thrilling adventure ensues when a mysterious disappearance plunges them into an unexpected journey from the Amazon rainforest to the

mountain peaks of Peru.

With passers by stopping for selfies, everyone was buzzing with excitement as they gathered to welcome their new neighbour - a meticulously crafted and painted statue sporting the wise bear’s signature red hat, blue duffle coat, and a marmalade sandwich in paw.

Film creators STUDIOCANAL came up with the idea to spread the Paddington love, so has teamed up with the Ordnance Survey to help intrepid explorers discover Paddington near them. Families can embark on their own adventure, with locations ranging from John O’Groats to Land’s End, Westport Co. Mayo to London, and, of course, a very special stop in Newbury, the hometown of Paddington’s creator, Michael Bond.

Speaking on the launch of Paddington Visits, a spokesperson from STUDIOCANAL commented: “We are delighted to launch Paddington Visits, a trail which will see everyone’s favourite bear bringing fun, kindness and warmth to communities across the UK. We hope that everyone seeks out their local Paddington, whether that’s dropping by for a chat about your day or to enjoy a marmalade sandwich or two while enjoying the view! Paddington is ready to welcome everyone!”

For 65 years, British-born writer Michael Bond has delighted readers all over the world with his stories about Paddington, the bear from Peru. The kindness and humour in the stories appeal to children and adults alike, ensuring Paddington’s enduring popularity from one generation to the next.

The World of Tim Burton

Until

21 April

2025 at the Design Museum. In partnership with Harvey Nichols

The Design Museum has revealed for the first time the highlights of its major autumn exhibition on the exceptional career of director Tim Burton.

Visitors to the museum in west London are invited to step into The World of Tim Burton and to journey through five remarkable decades of creativity. Today the famed and fascinating objects which will be seen are announced — from Tim Burton’s earliest unrealised projects to his most recent film, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024).

Over 600 incredible items will be brought together in the exhibition to chart the evolution of Burton’s unique design aesthetic. Objects are loaned from Tim Burton’s extensive personal archives, key film studio archives including Paramount, Amazon MGM Studios, and Warner Bros., and the private collections of Burton’s collaborators. Many items have never been on public display in the UK before.

Highlights include hundreds of Burton’s expressionistic sketches and drawings that he has created prolifically since childhood. These will be seen alongside props, set designs, and costumes from his iconic films, including Michelle Pfeiffer’s Catwoman costume from 1992’s Batman Returns, and the black and white striped dress from 1999’s Sleepy Hollow, worn by Christina Ricci.

The World of Tim Burton will showcase Burton’s remarkable output, with over 18 of his films individually spotlighted in the exhibition. It will celebrate the creative processes behind some of the most significant movies of the past five decades, including Beetlejuice (1988), Batman (1989), Edward Scissorhands (1990), and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005).

The exhibition comes to London after a hugely successful decade-long world tour that has seen it visit 14 cities in 11 countries since 2014. Yet not only will this be the first and only time it will be

seen in the UK, it will also be the very final time the exhibition will be staged. For this very special homecoming – to Tim Burton’s adopted home city – it has been specially adapted, expanded, and physically reimagined for the Design Museum. Visitors will for the first time be able to take a deeper look at the director’s work by seeing it through a design lens. With the addition of over 90 new objects to the exhibition, this iteration of the show will examine Burton’s hands-on and design-led approach to filmmaking.

A major aspect will also be the spotlighting of his long-term collaborations with designers working across costume, set and production design. This includes the renowned costume designer Colleen Atwood, production designer Rick Heinrichs, architect and designer Anton Furst, and the award-winning puppet makers and stop-motion animators Mackinnon and Saunders.

IN PARTNERSHIP WITH HARVEY NICHOLS

The World of Tim Burton is presented in partnership with Harvey Nichols. To celebrate the exhibition and its new partnership with the Design Museum, Harvey Nichols will unveil a Burtonesque Christmas window display later this year. It will feature five unique objects from Tim Burton’s private collection, previously showcased in his exhibitions around the globe. designmuseum.org @designmuseum

IT’S THE MONOPOLY: ST ALBANS EDITION’S ‘BIG REVEAL’

Abrand-new official MONOPOLY: St Albans Edition - featuring the great and good of the city - is now available in shops.

The game - which sees bespoke property spaces and cards - hit the shops on 14th October, following a formal launch at The Odyssey Cinema.

When it was announced earlier this year that St Albans is getting its own version of the

world’s most popular board game, the public was invited to send in suggestions for landmarks and organisations to feature in the game. Landing at the top of the board is St Albans Cathedral. At the other end - ‘Old Kent Road, the game’s most affordable square - is the Roman Theatre. This, say the game’s makers, is on account of it being “so very old”.

“We have been spoilt with choices when putting this MONOPOLY board together,” says Ella Gibbs, Custom Games Executive at Winning Moves UK. “We produce official MONOPOLY games based on places all over the world, including in recent years Palm Beach, Dubai, Phuket and The Hamptons. Now St Albans has joined the world’s MONOPOLY elite!”.

The Mayor of St Albans City and District, Cllr Jamie Day, says: “It is wonderful to see the historic city of St Albans celebrated as an official game of MONOPOLY”.

The MONOPOLY: St Albans Edition is available to purchase at Waterstones and WHSmith - as well as extensively online, including at Booghe.co.uk and Amazon.co.uk.

St Margaret’s School Hosts High Performance Sports Event for Elite Young Athletes with Olympic Badminton Player

Independent day and boarding school, St Margaret’s, recently hosted a High Performance Programme (HPP) event for its elite young athletes as part of its commitment to nurturing and mentoring sporting talent while giving children opportunities to meet role models from the sporting world. As part of the event, St Margaret’s welcomed Olympic badminton player, Gail Emms MBE onto the school campus, who delivered some special badminton masterclass workshops for elite junior school pupils in Year 5 and 6 as well as senior pupils in Years 8 to 11.

Despite it being a particularly warm day, the pupils displayed lots of enthusiasm, energy and drive, fully embracing the badminton sessions while being keen to learn new skills and techniques. Gail Emms worked closely with the selected children looking at aspects such as speed of movement, with the children soon learning that playing badminton at an elite level is hard work.

A badminton player since the age of four, Emms was first chosen to represent England in 1995 and regularly played for her country until her

retirement from professional sport in 2008, she said, “Visiting St Margaret’s has been a wonderful experience. I felt instantly welcomed and was super impressed by the children’s energy and the effort they showed. It was also wonderful to see the older children letting their guard down, asking intelligent questions and generally having fun.”

After the workshops, the children and their parents attended a special evening presentation and panel discussion which shared more insight about the school’s High Performance Programme (HPP) and included talks from St Margaret’s students who shared their own personal experiences in the world of elite sport.

“It was fantastic to see that sport at St Margaret’s is not only a very serious addition to school life but is also given recognition more widely from a careers perspective too. Playing sport at an elite level can be very tough, you need to learn to love pressure, absorb everything, ask your coaches questions and keep a training diary too. The more you can do to prepare from a young age, the better,” added Emms. stmargarets-school.org.uk

Autumn nail trends

Here are the prettiest polish trends you should try this month.

Autumn is the season when nail designs come into their own. Perhaps with more time to spend inside, cosy sweater weather and Halloween festivities on the horizon, now is the perfect time to try a new mesmerising mani.

This autumn calls upon burgundies, chocolate brown, burnt oranges and deep earth tones. Yet, for the more daring among us, 3D details and stiletto pointed tips are trending again: perfect to dress up any autumn nail look.

We hear from celebrity manicurists on the top autumn manicures you should try this season.

BLACK CHERRY

Plums, aubergines and burgundies have been trending this season – but this palette is certainly not confined to clothes. When it comes to nails, ‘black cherry’ seems to be reigning supreme this autumn. “Dark, gorgeous shades such as espresso, black cherry and deep moody greys are the colours du jour this season, direct from New York and London Fashion Weeks,” says Robbie Tomkins, celebrity manicurist to the likes of Naomi Campbell, Claudia Schiffer and Olivia Colman. Black cherry treads a fine line between being deep but not too deep: a combination of burgundy with a touch of dark chocolate. Just as the name of the trend suggests, black cherry nails are inspired by the sweet fruit, and are a low-maintenance and sexy look to sport this season.

MOODY AURAS

October is seeing an increase in popularity of the aura nail, says Tomkins, thanks to the trend’s versatility and moody ambience. “Aura nails are back, and with the help of any eyeshadow palette and a matte topcoat, they can even be achieved with normal nail polish,” says Tomkins. According to Tomkins, the trend is perfect for those wanting to experiment at home without having to go to the salon. “To achieve the look, just paint on a thin base coat, two coats of your favourite colour, and finish with a matte topcoat. Wait at least an hour for this to dry, then using a sponge applicator, gently apply a little of a contrasting colour of eye shadow to the centre of the nail, and finish with a glossy top coat.”

STRIKING STILETTOS

When it comes to shape, the clean-girl, short and neat nails are out. For this autumn, the longer nails are back in. If you’re wanting to achieve long, strong nails without using acrylics, Tomkins recommends investing in at-home treatments.

“Invest in a quality nail strengthening treatment, such as Protein Formula Strengthen Treatment.

“They have four different formulas altogether, each targeting specific nail issues, and the brand has created an online nail diagnostic quiz to tell you which one would suit you best.”

3D JELLY AND EMBELLISHMENT

This season’s trends aren’t all smooth and simple however, for those wanting to make a statement, jelly-like details and embellishments are making waves online, especially when it comes to celebrity manicures. “It’s the perfect way to add personality and glamour to your nails for a special occasion,” says Lily Collins’ nail tech at Paint Nails London, Angie Campbell. “This is the trend for anyone who loves eye-catching nails that shift and change with the light. The translucent nature of jelly nails feels fun and fresh, and is the perfect antidote to grey autumn days.

How to wear florals this autumn

Here’s how to style everything from bold blooms and ditsy florals this season. By Lara Owen

It was the fictional Miranda Priestly that once said: “Florals? For spring? Groundbreaking.”

However, when it comes to florals in autumn – that’s a trend even The Devil Wears Prada tyrant can approve of.

Styling fresh florals can be a difficult pattern to negotiate in the grey months. But with the season’s trending palette ranging from deep plums to forest greens – a good floral motif is a match made in heaven.

We hear from leading fashion experts about the best way to style florals this season.

EMBRACE DEEPER HUES

A sure way to perfect florals this autumn is through some trusty seasonal hues. Burgundy, rich browns and forest greens are trending this year –accompanied with some feminine floral prints, its the perfect combination.

“It’s time to embrace floral patterns in deeper, rich hues like maroon, mustard, and forest green,”

says Ben Roberts from the British jeweller Clogau.

“These warm tones not only evoke the spirit of the season, but also blend beautifully with autumn staples such as midi dresses, skirts, and oversized blouses.”

To ensure your florals are seasonally appropriate, combine with a cable-knit cardigan, oversized scarf or quilted coat.

THAT DOESN’T MEAN YOU CAN’T BE BOLD

Despite burnt and muted tones usually reigning supreme at this time of the year, that doesn’t mean we have to disband with our summer brights just yet.

If the Duchess of Edinburgh is anything to go by, taking a vibrant autumnal hue and pairing it with bright neutrals like white, chalk or grey is a great way to bring life and energy into your fall wardrobe.

Sophie recently sported a floral Erdem orange

ZARA SATIN SHIRT, £22.99
JOULES CARA CREAM DITSY CORD TWISTED FRONT DRESS, £79.95

skirt with a vibrant Sophie Habsburg ‘Lola’ bag on a recent visit to Malta.

Erdem is a British label favoured by royals, also frequently sported by the Princess of Wales, and their refined ready-to-wear pieces are certified showstoppers all-year round.

If you’re not confident with vibrant florals: “Always stick to no more than three colours when building an outfit,” says celebrity colour analyst Charlotte Elizabeth, who has partnered with Joules to advise how to balance colours and patterns in the autumn. “Learn how to recognise cool from warm colours and don’t mix them as they won’t create harmony or a balanced, stylish look.”

DITSY DAISIES OR BIG BLOOMS? IT DEPENDS ON YOUR BODY TYPE

When it comes to picking the perfect pattern, there are almost too many florals to choose from.

“When considering patterns, it’s helpful to look at your body shape first and use patterns to complement your body

image,” advises Elizabeth.

If you want to elongate your body, wear the pattern on your top half: “Elongate the legs with a plain or lengthening print, and choose a soft curvy, floral for your top half,” recommends Elizabeth.

“Patterns can be used to highlight your best feature but, conversely, do not choose a pattern which focuses on your worst feature,” she explains.

“For example, over a large bust, avoid large floral prints and pear shapes should avoid adding ditsy patterns over

IT LIES IN ACCESSORISING

When it comes to accessorising with florals – the trick is to not go overboard with the same print or clashing colours.

“Floral prints can be bold, so when accessorising, you’ll want to keep things understated yet cohesive,” explains Roberts. “If you’re wearing a floral blouse or dress, it’s key to choose jewellery that complements rather than competes with your look.”

According to Roberts it all lies in the balance. If you’re wearing a dark floral dress – pair it with a minimal silver bangle or simple flower studs can enhance your outfit without overwhelming it.

If you’re feeling adventurous, layering one or two subtle pieces can allow both the floral print and your jewellery to shine in harmony.

HOW TO WEAR THE TARTAN TREND THIS SEASON

The Scottish pattern is making a comeback, and here’s how to style it. By

Tartan has taken the trophy as the biggest fashion trend for autumn/ winter this year.

Everyone from Taylor Swift to the Princess of Wales have been sporting the check in both its refined and punkish plaid forms.

While tartan always enjoys a resurgence once the temperatures drop, this year particularly has seen fashion collections awash with the heritage check that channels British countryside chic.

Fashion experts share some easy ways to wear the trend this season – without looking too much like a Lady-of-the-Manor or Clueless’ Cher.

GET THE COLOUR CORRECT

This season’s hero colour, burgundy, has been making its way into autumn’s biggest fashion trends, from florals to Fair Isle. However, when it comes to tartan, blue and green is dominating the high street.

“Black Watch tartan with its green and navy check is a timeless classic,” says Emma Starrs from Elkin. “It’s easy to style, and looks great on top or either as a mini or a long-length kilt.”

However, if you want to don tartan in the season’s plum shades, “burgundy and berry shades from deep purples to ruby are also in demand,” notes Starrs.

WHICH STYLE OF TARTAN TO PICK

You may not be aware of every style of check that tartan comes in, but picking the right print for you will make or break an outfit – as well as determining the look you’re going for.

“Royal Stewart tartan has universal fashion appeal because of its associations with tradition and punk culture through icons such as Vivienne Westwood and The Sex Pistols,” says Starrs. “Young and old can relate to it and while it’s bold, it’s also a classic.”

If you’re less inclined to channel the Nineties grunge aesthetic, opt for Black Watch Stewart or Royal Weathered Tartan, which offer more muted colourways and are easier to style in a more minimalist wardrobe.

GO BIG OR GO HOME

For an elevated look, throw on an oversized checked coat over a chic knitted dress and pair it with knee-high boots. Or style your high-waisted plaid skirt with a chunky knit and Mary Jane flats for an effortlessly feminine outfit.

Sporting the print in all its swathes has been the go-to for both royals and celebs alike. The Princess of Wales often dons the heritage print in her outerwear, keeping the rest of outfit pared back and simple.

From her beloved Holland Cooper tartan trenches to her waterproof quilted Burberry, if you’re channelling the relaxed royal style of Balmoral, Kate needn’t be your only inspiration.

Claudia Winkleman’s Traitors wardrobe, curated by celebrity stylist Sinead McKeefry, has produced a smorgasbord of seasonal inspo. Pairing a plaid skirt with a chunky knit and pumps or an argyle knit with a tartan blazer and boots are simple ways to channel the ultimate autumn uniform.

ACCESSORIES AND ACCENTS

Whilst some of us may not be as bold as Kate or Winkleman, that doesn’t mean you can’t dip your toe into the tartan trend. Adorning an autumn ensemble with checked accessories is a great way to incorporate the style without going overboard.

“If you want to get a bit of colour into your look but avoid contemporary block and check patterns, a tartan scarf can be a classic way to achieve this,” says owner of Glencroft, Edward Sexton.

“Grey Thomson is a subtle tartan that will add some colour to a winter theme,” recommends Sexton. “And let’s not forget that Burberry have been using their variation of the Camel Thomson tartan for decades.”

A scarf or tartan-print bag paired with a green waxed jacket or trench coat is a match made in heaven.

WHAT FRAGRANCE TO WEAR DEPENDING ON YOUR STYLE

Here are expert tips on matching your perfume to your outfit. By Lara Owen

Fragrance makes up an essential part of your personal style. When searching for your signature scent, it’s easy to be overwhelmed by the abundance of perfumes out there, from classics by the likes of Chanel and Dior, to lesser-known gems from Dossier and Diptyque.

So, where do you begin when trying to suss out a scent that suits your style? Beyond practical considerations – such as whether it’s officeappropriate or how long it lasts on the skin – the best perfumes are those that smell beautiful to you and conjure a range of emotions as a result.

That comes down to science. Here’s what to look for when finding the perfect perfume to suit your style, according to experts.

WHERE DO I START?

Shopping for fragrances has become increasingly difficult in recent times, with the rise of online shopping, finding you signature scent is more of a task than a treat.

The easy part about shopping for fragrance as opposed to make-up is that you can’t go wrong.

“Searching for the one is like a game you can’t lose – each single fragrance you try will bring you closer to the understanding of what works for you or what doesn’t,” says Oriflame’s fragrance specialist, Anya Pavlenko.

The Fragrance Shop’s Rachel Goalby says you should start with understanding the science behind your fragrance. “When searching for your signature scent, start by learning how fragrances are layered.

“Top notes are what you smell first, usually lighter and fresher; heart notes follow, creating the main body of the fragrance, often floral or spicy; and base notes are the deep, lasting scents, like woods, amber, or musk.”

MATCHING YOUR SCENT TO YOUR STYLE

Cottage-core

If you adore the soft, pastoral charm of the ‘cottage-core’ aesthetic, fragrances that evoke warmth and natural surroundings are key.

CHLOÉ NOMADE EAU DE TOILETTE30ML, £44 (WAS £55), LOOK FANTASTIC
RABANNE MILLION GOLD FOR HER EAU DE PARFUM 50ML, £95, THE FRAGRANCE SHOP

“Look for scents that evoke cosiness and warmth,” says Floral Street’s founder, Michelle Feeney. When it comes to notes, “The combination of natural vanilla with jasmine gives a comforting yet confident vibe, like a warm hug.”

Classic scents like Lancôme’s La Vie Est Belle are good examples, while Maison Noir’s Claudio Denz suggests, “a herbal essence to a fragrance that embodies the free-spirited and natural vibe of cottage-core is key when pairing.”

If you’re wanting a less-sweet and more earthy scent, look for notes like amber, cedar and tonka bean.

Corporate siren

If you’re wanting to channel a more Devil Wears Prada ‘corporate siren’ approach, you’re probably looking to exude sophistication and elegance.

“When it comes to ‘office-appropriate’ scents –the territory seems to be quite subjective, with no clear rules,” says Pavlenko. “But think about it this way: if your colleagues can guess you are already in the office because of the strong trail of perfume they detected in the elevator, you might want to reconsider your choices!”

“Think fresher fragrances with uplifting floralfruity combos to keep your energy high while lasting the whole working day,” Pavlenko advises.

If you’re wanting something strong, “Boss Alive by Hugo Boss is a good choice,” says Goalby. “With its bold mix of plum, apple and vanilla, this fragrance commands attention without overwhelming the senses, just like a confident professional.”

Edgy maximalist

If your style leans into the leopard print, red lipstick look donned by the likes of Kate Moss and Cara Delevingne, then an unapologetic fragrance should follow suit.

“Rabanne Million Gold always brings necessary drama with its intoxicating blend of rose, white flower bouquet and mineral musk – perfect for someone unafraid to make a statement,” says Goalby.

“Yet, Jean-Paul Gaultier Scandal is another great fit, with its rich combination of honey, blood orange, and patchouli,” Goalby adds, “a scent that’s as daring and unpredictable as your fashion choices.”

If you want something less dramatic, “Try a

fragrance that has some surprising notes that are more playful,” advises Feeney. Something warm and floral, with notes of amber works best for a sultry but cool look.

Breezy boho

For the free-spirited among us, something light, earthy and effortless is the scent to match the boho aesthetic.

Yet when it comes to looking effortless, “The first rule? Don’t try too hard to look cool,” says Pavlenko. “Combination of skin-like musks with addictive, creamy sandalwood and the occasional touch of fruits will help you to keep it casual with an effortless bohemian touch.”

The pioneering brand of boho, Chloé, has a great set of fragrances to perfectly embody the look. “Chloé Nomade is a beautiful match, with its notes of oak moss, Mirabelle plum and freesia, it evokes a sense of wanderlust and freedom,” says Goalby.

“If you’re seeking something a bit more floral, Gucci Flora Gorgeous Gardenia captures the essence of a carefree bohemian day with its blend of pear blossom, red berries and gardenia – both grounded and graceful.

THE KEY TO FINDING YOUR SIGNATURE SCENT

“When choosing a signature scent, think about how you want to feel and how you want others to perceive you,” says Goalby.

“Ultimately, your signature scent should feel like a second skin – one that expresses your personality and makes you feel good about yourself, whether that’s cosy, bold, or effortlessly chic!”

LIGHTING REPORT

As darkness draws in, and with a renewed focus on the ambiance and feel of our homes, lighting design is under the spotlight, shaping the atmosphere in ways that go far beyond pure illumination. As technology, craft and imagination intersect, lights are now so much more than just functional – they have become statement pieces that reflect individual style and set the tone of a space. From sculptural forms that demand attention and create drama to calming designs that draw on the home’s ever-increasing connection to nature, lighting is evolving to enhance not just how we see a room, but how we experience it.

For 2024, lighting trends are pushing the boundaries of creativity and innovation, with an emphasis on unique forms, expressive design and a contemporary connection to nature. Whether it’s bold, futuristic structures or a spectrum of colours from dramatic to calm, lighting has become an art form in its own right. As the design world increasingly moves towards curating spaces that feel personal and meaningful, lighting has evolved into an essential tool to transform a space from

every day to exceptional – and not only with luminescence. Here’s where contemporary pendant lights, table lights, floor lights, wall lights and more are heading.

TIMBER TOUCH:

Sleek materials like glass and metal often define lighting design, but the introduction of timber brings a soothing warmth, infusing nature into the modern home. Juxtaposing the soft pattern of grain and timber’s alluring organic texture with modern technology creates a captivating balance between nature and innovation. One element feels artisanal and ancient, the other, precise and industrial. Together, they form a fusion that feels both timeless and forward-thinking, inviting us to bask in the tactile beauty of the natural world alongside the precision of contemporary design.

OPAQUE DIFFUSION:

“The introduction of timber brings a soothing warmth, infusing nature into the modern home”

Clear bulbs? Not anymore. Modern designs favor opaque, misty, white-toned glass, emitting soft, diffused light that transforms a room into a serene, tranquil haven. The subtle white-ness adds understated elegance while offering space for

experimentation. Oversized and artistic, these glass bulbs, often perched on minimalist bases, seem to defy gravity, creating focal points that elevate a room’s ambiance. It’s all about the mood they set, rather than their understated aesthetic appeal.

THE ART OF LIGHTING:

Is it a bird? A plane? No, it’s a sculptural designer floor lamp. Lighting is evolving beyond function, prioritizing bold, artistic statements over pure illumination. Gone are the days of task lights—now, freestanding lamps embrace originality and creative form. From gravity-defying designs to totem-like structures, lighting pushes boundaries, transforming into art pieces rather than mere light sources. Expect ever-bolder designs as our perceptions of what a lamp should be continue to shift.

SOFT ROSE:

The pastel lighting colour of the moment? A delicate rose pink takes the spotlight, adding subtle, sugary charm to interiors. This nearlyneutral tone brings playful sweetness without overwhelming, blending effortlessly with white or clear glass. Often featured in pared-back shapes or on smaller accents, this soft hue shines with understated whimsy, transforming lighting into both functional pieces and artful statements that sprinkle spaces with joy.

LINEAR LIGHTING:

Today’s pendant lights shed utilitarian vibes,

favouring elongated, eye-level designs that illuminate entire surfaces—ideal for dining tables or islands. These streamlined pieces replace rows of matching pendants, cutting back on ceiling support and wiring. Designs range from minimal, thin lines to thicker tubes, with options for ornamental bulbs and shades. Efficient-yetbold, they balance simplicity with unexpected details, playfully breaking from uniformity to add personality and brightness to interiors.

HONEY HUED:

This season, honeyed tones take the spotlight in lighting design, casting a soothing glow even when switched off. These rich, golden hues evoke sunset warmth, autumn leaves, and candlelight, infusing spaces with natural comfort. Modern pieces feature all-over golden finishes, often in smooth, rounded shapes reminiscent of honey dips. Large or subtle, honey-hued lights bring an organic, nature-inspired touch indoors, exuding a golden warmth that feels timeless and serene.

PRIMARY BRIGHTS:

Seeking colourful, modern lighting with punch? Primary tones – pillar-box red, sunshine yellow, Yves Klein blue – are ideal. These bold brights demand attention, each adding drama and energy; combine all three for a dynamic, lively atmosphere to invigorate any room. Designs range from chunky, commanding forms to sleek, understated shapes that showcase colour in subtler ways. Primary-coloured lights add personality and flair, serving as eye-catching, conversation-starting focal points and practical sources of illumination for a vibrant, audacious mood. chaplins.co.uk

Long story short: 125 years of quality

Miele is the world’s leading manufacturer of premium kitchen appliances including cooking and steam-cooking, refrigeration, coffee machines and dishwashers. Founded 125 years ago, Miele has always been a familyowned company, holding quality in the highest regard and since designing and delivering their very first cream separator in 1899, Miele’s philosophy and conviction remain unchanged: Immer Besser (Forever Better).

Discover Miele’s appliances for yourself by visiting one of their Experience Centres in London at Oxford Circus, Brent Cross, Bluewater and Mayfair. We caught up with Cesar Fernandez, Lead Culinary Manager to learn more about Miele’s Experience Centres and their prepurchase courses.

What do you love most about cooking with Miele?

I love that I can trust the ovens to always deliver brilliant consistent results. Miele ovens provide evenness of cooking with no need to turn your trays and cake tins halfway through. Plus, there’s no need to preheat the oven because of their fast heat up times.

I’m always amazed by the features of Miele ovens. Taste Control opens the oven door automatically right at the end of the cooking cycle, preventing your food from burning or overcooking, which is great if you’re not ready to serve it yet and will even keep it warm at the perfect temperature. Or Moisture Plus where I can create the best-looking sourdough loaf or the juiciest chicken by releasing bursts of steam throughout.

What tips do you have for people choosing appliances for a new kitchen?

I would definitely recommend visiting any of the Miele Experience Centres as we have live kitchens where people can come and try everything. We also run pre-purchase courses to help customers navigate our range and owners’ courses where we can teach Miele customers how to maximise the use of their cooking appliances.

What appliance in the kitchen can you not live without?

My favourite appliance by far is our combination

steam oven. If I’m cooking at home, it is always my go-to appliance, especially when I’m only cooking enough food for 1 -2 people, and I don’t want to heat up the main oven. From gently steaming veg and poaching eggs to cooking the most incredible rice. It can also do combination cooking, where I can grill and steam together, making sure I get the crispiest skin on a sea bass whilst retaining all its moisture. Finally, Hydro Clean, which will self-clean the oven!

What exciting new things has Miele launched this year?

The new matt black range of handleless built in cooking appliances would make a beautiful addition to any high-end kitchen.

Who inspires you?

I’ve been lucky enough to collaborate over the years with some incredible chefs thanks to Miele. Tommy Banks created some of the most delicious food I’ve ever tasted - I will never forget his turbot, strawberries and cream combination - and Chantelle Nicholson whose root to tail approach, circular economy and regeneration always amazes me.

To celebrate Miele’s 125th Anniversary, they are offering the chance to win £125,000 when you purchase an eligible Miele appliance between 01/05/2024 and 30/04/2025. Terms & Conditions apply, for full details visit miele.co.uk

BESPOKE LUXURY FROM OLIVE & BARR

Founded by cabinet maker Al Bruce in 2018, British handmade kitchen company Olive & Barr was born out of a passion for quality craftsmanship, attention to detail and an intuition for kitchen design.

Blending seamlessly into any home, from rustic country pile to contemporary new build, Olive & Barr’s signature shaker style combines traditional joinery with modern techniques to create an elegant, timeless kitchen that transcends trends and focuses on three pillars of design: simplicity, durability and function. Customers have the opportunity to experience an Olive & Barr kitchen up close before purchasing, in any of the three UK showrooms: South London, Malvern or newly launched Gloucestershire.

An Olive & Barr kitchen is as unique as its customer, thanks to a truly bespoke service from start to finish. The team takes nothing for granted and does its utmost to understand its customers’ needs and wants. Good value is also a mainstay here: Olive & Barr prides itself on its (seemingly) impossibly competitive prices, bringing customers both an impeccable finish and exceptional value.

To keep costs down, Olive & Barr invest in cutting-edge technology to save time on traditional techniques like dovetailing. Small changes guarantee the best products at the best prices,

alongside this, the drawer boxes are dovetailed using solid oak, to provide the very best quality. Harnessing the time-honoured traditions of yesteryear, whilst simultaneously embracing the technological developments of the future allows each customer to receive a reassuringly iconic Shaker kitchen, without having to relinquish the cutting-edge ‘bells and whistles’ of a contemporary design.

Made exclusively in the UK in their West Country workshops, each Olive & Barr Kitchen is crafted by artisans using carefully sourced materials which are both traceable and accountable. The materials used are accredited by the FSC (an international organisation dedicated to promoting responsible management of the world’s forests) and the team at Olive & Barr remain diligent with recycling and reuse wherever possible, recycling all packaging after installation and repurposing off cuts of timber.

A quintessentially classic kitchen maker, with a focus on timeless beauty, impeccable quality, excellent value and sustainable and forwardthinking design, Olive & Barr aims to break the mould of traditional kitchen companies and exceed its customers’ expectations in every way. Our Kent Project Wins the International Design & Architecture Awards 2024

We are thrilled to announce that our Kent project has been awarded the prestigious International Design & Architecture Award 2024 in the Luxury Residence - UK category, hosted by Design et al. This honour represents not only a significant achievement for our team but also a testament to the incredible collaboration with our client, a property developer who sought to elevate his personal build with a higher-end specification.

From the very beginning, we were entrusted with a vision that went beyond the ordinary. Our involvement in the project started at the planning stage, which allowed us to provide a detailed architectural specification package that covered everything from bathrooms to flooring, lighting, and interior elements. This early collaboration ensured that every detail of the home was meticulously planned before we proceeded with our full interior design service.

The client’s brief was to create a high-end family home that could also serve as a space for entertaining friends. As the father of two children,

it was crucial that the home felt welcoming and inclusive for the entire family, making the transition into their new home as seamless as possible. We took great care in involving the children throughout the process, ensuring the design reflected both sophistication and the warmth of a family residence.

While the client brought a few ideas to the table and remained actively involved throughout the 18-month journey, they trusted us to develop and expand upon their vision. We worked closely with them, holding regular meetings and providing updates to ensure the project stayed on course while aligning with their goals. This close collaboration was instrumental in the success of the project, as we were able to follow through on all fundamental developments on-site.

This award is not just a win for us but a celebration of the partnership we shared with our client, the dedication of our team, and the collective creativity that brought this breathtaking home to life.

We’d love to hear your thoughts on this project! aji.co.uk
