The Taste of Autumn Menu at The Ivy

A new three-course menu with glass of English Sparkling for just £29.50

This Autumn, The Ivy Collection announces the launch of its new The Ivy Collection Cuvée, set to be the star of the wine list at restaurants nationwide. To celebrate the launch, the restaurant brand has created an exclusive ‘Taste of Autumn’ menu, perfectly paired to complement the wine, in which guests can enjoy a seasonal, three course meal along with a glass of Cuvée for just £29.50

Available at The Ivy Collection Restaurants around the UK* from 18th September, the menu has been expertly crafted by The Ivy’s executive chefs to celebrate seasonal produce and flavours, as well as perfectly complement The Ivy Collection Cuvée’s tasting notes and flavour profile. The new Wild Idol Sparkling White, a non-alcoholic sparkling wine, is also available as an alternative for guests seeking an option without alcohol.

Guests can select three courses, starting with dishes such as a comforting and indulgent Truffle Taglioni; fine durum wheat pasta doused in a warming cheese sauce and topped with grated black truffle at the table, or the Stilton, Chicory and Pecan Salad, served with sliced apple and a honey and wholegrain mustard dressing. For mains, guests can tuck into options such as the iconic, Ivy Classic Shepherd’s Pie or the new Artichoke and Sweet Potato Tagine, complete with toasted almonds, olives, aubergine and harissa couscous. To finish off the meal, selections include the decadent Cherry and Pistachio Nougat Glacé Flambé, served with raspberries and doused in kirsch to provide that signature flame, and the classically comforting Sticky Toffee Pudding served with salted caramel sauce, clotted cream and gold flakes.

The Ivy Collection Cuvée is an English sparkling wine made in Kent for The Ivy Collection and will be the first English sparkling to join the portfolio

of The Ivy wines. The sparkling boasts aromas of elderflower, white hedgerow flowers, pear, and apricot which lead to a fine mousse and refreshing finish. Lingering flavours of citrus and ripe stone fruit add to the charm, perfect for pairing with seasonal, autumn dishes.

Sebastian Kasyna from The Ivy Collection said: “When we were looking for a new sparkling to add to our wine list we decided that it just had to be an English Sparkling – wineries around the country are really coming into their own and producing great quality wines and as our autumn menu celebrates the best of seasonal, British produce, it seemed like the perfect selection to accompany it. We chose the wine from a Kent-based vineyard for its distinctly English flavour profile and can’t wait for guests to try it alongside our seasonal autumn dishes.”

The ‘Taste of Autumn’ menu will be available at The Ivy Collection restaurants around the UK* until Sunday 20th October, available Sunday to Friday (excluding Saturday), from 11:30am until restaurant close.

Autumnal Taste Sensation at the Auberge Du Lac

Inside a former 17th Century hunting lodge, on the vast countryside of the Brocket Hall Estate, lies a hidden Hertfordshire gem, the Auberge du Lac Restaurant. Set within this majestic setting, our executive Head Chef John Barber cooks up culinary masterpieces, showcasing his tremendous talent for rich and flavoursome food.

John’s journey started at a young age showing a flare for cooking at just 14 where he started as a kitchen porter in a local restaurant. Studying at a professional culinary school in Birmingham led John to his first big break at The Belfrey Hotel and Resort.

After a successful period at The Belfry Hotel and Resort John was enrolled within a three-year culinary programme at the exclusive Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Knightsbridge. This allowed John to further his experience in different culinary disciplines, including cold larder, banqueting, fine dining and pastry.

At the conclusion of the three-year program,

and to continue his quest for culinary excellence

John took on a new role at the renowned Bar Boulud, the only European restaurant under the guidance of multi award winning and culinary hall of fame chef Daniel Boulud.

Building on his experience John took on a new challenge opening his first restaurant, a vibrant all day dining restaurant and bar called 14 Hills, perched on the 14th floor of 120 Fenchurch Street in the heart of London’s Square Mile.

As his career was growing so was his family, and John wanted to bring his knowledge of fine dining and the vibrant energy of all-day dining of the city back to his hometown in Hertfordshire. Being based in Hitchin, Brocket Hall was the perfect venue for John to show off his culinary flare and expertise in both a fine dining and banqueting and so his Brocket Hall journey began.

The re opening of the Auberge du Lac has been driven by John’s passion to showcase his culinary excellence within the stunning listed building that still embellishes the original features from its origins as the estates hunting lodge. Stepped in history the restaurant emits a rustic yet peaceful dining atmosphere with majestic views across the River Lea and Brocket Hall Estate.

“Stepped in history the restaurant emits a rustic yet peaceful dining atmosphere with majestic views across the River Lea and Brocket Hall Estate”

On the eve of launching our new Autumn menu filled with favourable dishes John was asked what dish was his personal favourite? “Fallow Deer without doubt, this had been an extremely popular choice with our guests, so I am pleased to have it back on the menu ready for the new season.

To compliment the change of season, we have introduced new seasonal ingredients including a delicious range of seasonal foraged mushrooms such as Chicken of the Woods, Girolles, Trompets and Pied blue.

As the season for harvest is upon us, we are excited to be bringing our new seasonal menu to life at the elegant Auberge du Lac, set within the magnificent Brocket Hall Estate.

SUPERIOR : INFERIOR

A Class & Status in Roman Britain Exhibition at Verulamium Museum. Until 11 November

Anew thought-provoking exhibition at Verulamium Museum, SUPERIOR : INFERIOR seeks to get people talking by asking visitors to examine social class and status in Roman Verulamium and think about those concepts within society today.

The exhibition runs until November 11 and is guest curated by ancient historian Andrew Deathe.

Andrew said: “Social status was important to the Roman residents of Verulamium and this exhibition explores how they showed and used their social position.

“For me, the best history makes you think ‘What would I do if I was there?’, so we encourage visitors to think about how we view class today, how they would react in different social situations and how they would measure themselves against the ancient citizens?”

Visitors are taken on an interactive journey where they meet seven pairs of imagined inhabitants of ancient Verulamium whose stories vividly come to life through designs by local St Albans illustrator, Simon Maskell. Each pairing represents a different situation and uses archaeological objects, imagined conversations and other clues to enable visitors to decide who would have been perceived as higher status and who of lower status.

Catherine

Newley, Audience Development Manager at St Albans Museums, said: “This unique exhibition is part of our ‘Revisiting the Romans’ series of interventions at the museum. Regular visitors will know that you can explore the wonders of Roman life, be immersed in recreated Roman rooms and admire the craftsmanship of the intricate large-scale mosaics on display but through this intervention, visitors are encouraged to explore how the occupants of Roman Verulamium viewed their social class and status - and discover how it affected their everyday lives.

“It’s been a delight to work with Andrew on this incredibly insightful and absorbing project and we look forward to seeing how visitors perceive class and society.”

THE DETAILS

Verulamium Museum, St Michael’s Street, St Albans, AL3 4SW, is open Monday to Friday 10am – 4.30pm (last admission 4pm) and Saturday 11am –3.30pm (last admission 3pm). Admission charges apply. Visit stalbansmuseums.org.uk and follow @stalbansmuseums

On Friday 4th October, St Albans welcomed customers to the historic street George Street for an evening of Gin & Jazz.

The annual social event kicked-off the party season in St Albans and saw the community come together for a night of celebration and merriment under the stars. Drinks stalls lined the street offering a smorgasbord of gins and other delectable tipples, whilst live Jazz music filled the evening air.

Organised by St Albans City Centre BID and George Street Retail Association, the free event saw businesses, open their doors for late night shopping and host pop-up bars, each one offering something different to the evening crowds. Local Hertfordshire distilleries were showcased on the night with George Street Canteen offering their Honey Gin made in collaboration with Puddingstone Distillery, contemporary jeweller Galio teamed up with Black Bridge Gin, Christopher Wharton Goldsmith hosted Spirit of Hertfordshire Gin, which included a range of Alban Gin’s which are inspired by the city’s Cathedral and Dwayne Edwards welcomed people into their kitchen showroom with Willow Tree Gin from neighbouring Bedfordshire.

It wasn’t just gin on the menu, Flower Box

There were plenty of places to grab a bite to eat too, including hot pizzas from Locanda Bagutta, a selection of bites from The Loft and The Hub on Verulam served gourmet hot dogs alongside their drinks offering.

The event continues to grow year on year and welcomed new additions to the line-up this year. St Margaret’s School Hosts High Performance Sports Event for Elite Young Athletes with Olympic Badminton Player

Independent day and boarding school, St Margaret’s, recently hosted a High Performance Programme (HPP) event for its elite young athletes as part of its commitment to nurturing and mentoring sporting talent while giving children opportunities to meet role models from the sporting world. As part of the event, St Margaret’s welcomed Olympic badminton player, Gail Emms MBE onto the school campus, who delivered some special badminton masterclass workshops for elite junior school pupils in Year 5 and 6 as well as senior pupils in Years 8 to 11.

Despite it being a particularly warm day, the pupils displayed lots of enthusiasm, energy and drive, fully embracing the badminton sessions while being keen to learn new skills and techniques. Gail Emms worked closely with the selected children looking at aspects such as speed of movement, with the children soon learning that playing badminton at an elite level is hard work.

A badminton player since the age of four, Emms was first chosen to represent England in 1995 and regularly played for her country until her

retirement from professional sport in 2008, she said, “Visiting St Margaret’s has been a wonderful experience. I felt instantly welcomed and was super impressed by the children’s energy and the effort they showed. It was also wonderful to see the older children letting their guard down, asking intelligent questions and generally having fun.”

After the workshops, the children and their parents attended a special evening presentation and panel discussion which shared more insight about the school’s High Performance Programme (HPP) and included talks from St Margaret’s students who shared their own personal experiences in the world of elite sport.

“It was fantastic to see that sport at St Margaret’s is not only a very serious addition to school life but is also given recognition more widely from a careers perspective too. Playing sport at an elite level can be very tough, you need to learn to love pressure, absorb everything, ask your coaches questions and keep a training diary too. The more you can do to prepare from a young age, the better,” added Emms. stmargarets-school.org.uk

ST COLUMBA’S COLLEGE

The longer I am at St Columba’s College, the more special it becomes to me. It truly is a sanctuary for young people, where a perfect balance is created between academic excellence and personal attention. As I begin my second year as Headmaster, my job is simple: make it even better than it currently is, and I am determined to do exactly that.

This perfect balance begins in our Prep School, where our youngest children are nurtured and introduced to the unique nature of a Columban education: surrounded with positivity, encouragement, challenge (pastoral and academic excellence). The firm foundations are built and strengthened by the time they are ready for the transition to the Senior School, and based on our academic results this year, what an amazing foundation this is!

A Level results were the best in ten years, and GCSE results were not only higher than the Independent School average but over three times higher than the national average for boys. The expertise of our teachers in their knowledge, planning and preparation is self-evident with such outstanding results and, from September 2025, this proficiency will also be applied to a new range of post-16, Level 3 Alternative Academic Qualifications. This ensures that St Columba’s will continue to guarantee that all its young people will have access to qualifications that suit their interest and promote their individual abilities – a true mark of a holistic education.

Our success story in the transition to coeducation continues. In the past year, we have created an Expressive Arts faculty which promotes Art, Textiles, Drama, Music and Performing Arts. All of our students thrive in this environment,

and if any proof was required all I need do is walk through our Art Studio to see the variety of skills developed by our students, listen to the choirs and musicians rehearse, or buy a front row ticket for our up-coming production of Shrek The Musical. Expressive Arts is alive and well at St Columba’s College. Our sporting offer for our girls is also a significant area of growth and expanding success; champions of Netball leagues at their first attempt, winners in mixed Basketball, fierce competitors in football teams to name but a few. Our new pitches of grass, 4G and Astro turf only add to the sporting portfolio, not forgetting multiple fixtures, training sessions and national and international sporting tours.

No curriculum should ever be permanent and, in our drive to ensure we meet all the needs of our young people, our curriculum next year will also involve creating a Food Tech Department for the first time in the College. I know that this will create huge excitement for our young people and will open other opportunities for them to succeed.

My vision for St Columba’s College will always be to offer a holistic education and one that is provided through personal attention. I believe young people deserve an education that is as wide as possible, with absolutely no compromise on excellence. For us, this means that our students leave us as young Columbans intellectually able and curious with a breadth of experience in order to further develop a moral compass that will foster happiness in themselves and in others.

Visit us at Felsted School!

Felsted was named ‘Boarding School of the Year’ by the prestigious Times Educational Supplement in 2023 and it’s easy to see why. Not only does the school campus present 90 acres for children to explore but this is the setting for an education that is exciting and inspiring.

Felsted School is a wonderful environment for children aged four to 18 to learn, grow and develop their characters, interests and talents. When the Independent Schools Inspectorate visited in December 2023, they were particularly impressed by Felsted’s curriculum, which they described as ‘well-designed, broad and balanced’, and the ‘effective’ teaching.

Teaching at Felsted is informed by the latest research in children’s learning. The youngest really engage with their education and are taught to become independent learners from the start, while older pupils have the choice of a huge range of subjects to study at GCSE and A Level, alongside the rigorous International Baccalaureate Diploma programme.

Pupils at Felsted discover their talents and life-long interests. Inspiring facilities and teachers spark their passion for art, drama and music and all sorts of adventurous activities. Sport at Felsted is for all levels and abilities, with our most committed pupils joining elite pathways benefiting from highlevel coaching and support.

Boarding is extremely popular too. In fact, three-quarters of Felsted’s senior students (age 13 and up) stay for three nights a week or more in homely on-site boarding houses. Students develop independence and forge life-long friendships.

Why not visit us at Felsted? We host open days and taster sessions – just visit felsted.org/ opendays to register or take a virtual tour of the campus before you come along in person.

ST. ALBANS MATHS TUTORS

We started St. Albans Maths Tutors in September 2009. A joint enterprise of two highly qualified senior maths teachers with over 40 years combined teaching experience in both state and private schools. Our primary aim was to offer high quality Maths tuition to pupils in Secondary schools to become more proficient and confident in Maths in order to pass their exams.

Our aim was underpinned by our philosophy:

• To teach in a way that everyone can understand,

• To make learning enjoyable,

• To motivate students to learn,

• To inspire students to achieve academic success and confidence.

Since 2009, we have successfully demonstrated that our philosophy works. We have taught

numerous students of varying abilities in private and state schools to achieve their full academic potential and succeed in their exams.

The Success Story Continues

Our success in Maths, led to an overwhelming demand from parents for primary tuition and also secondary tuition for English and Science

In June 2023, we seized the opportunity and took the initiative to extend our enterprise beyond the boundaries of Maths, and opened “The Tutor Hub” in Redbourn High Street.

“The Tutor Hub” is a tuition centre that has given us the opportunity to branch out into primary tuition by offering Maths and English and offering secondary tuition in English and Science. We now have an extended highly qualified tuition team with excellent specialist Primary tutors and outstanding specialist Secondary tutors who share our vision commitment and passion.

Since 2009 our tuition services have changed, however our educational philosophy and aim to deliver excellent face to face tuition remains unchanged. Sandra & Jae Simon stalbans-mathstutor.co.uk

AUTUMN AT THE ABBEY THEATRE

The Company of Ten is delighted to be celebrating its 90th season – opening on 13th September. The company was founded in 1934 and staged its first production A Murder has been Arranged in Culver Hall on Culver Road. In 1965 St Albans City Council offered a lease on land by the, then new, Westminster Lodge Leisure Centre. Sir Michael Redgrave laid the foundation stone of the first purpose built theatre to be built in St Albans since Roman times!

The theatre also enjoyed a Royal visit when in April 1968 Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother came to the opening performance of The Recruiting Officer

Our 90th season opener is Hay Fever, one of Coward’s most enduring works, and a masterful comedy of manners that explores the eccentricities of the Bliss family—a group of artistic, selfabsorbed individuals whose theatrical personalities turn a quiet weekend in the country into a

whirlwind of misunderstandings and romantic entanglements. When each family member invites a guest to stay, the stage is set for an uproarious clash of egos, miscommunication and comic mischief.

Director Alison Wright says: ‘It’s fabulous to open the Company of Ten’s 90th season with the Coward classic Hay Fever celebrating its hundredth year! The play follows the antics of the eccentric Bliss family and their hapless weekend guests. Coward neatly described it as “a light comedy in three acts” and we’re having tremendous fun with it. Hay Fever is all about style — it’s beautifully crafted with the style and wit of Coward’s exquisite writing complementing the style of our 1925 country-house setting, costume and props. We’re going to do it in style!’

The season continues with The Father, a tragi-comedy, followed by the lively musical, Nell Gwynn before. abbeytheatre.org.uk

Alexa Chung is creative director for Barbour’s AW24 collection

The British model and presenter has a longstanding history of collaborating with the brand. By Lara Owen

Model and presenter Alexa Chung has taken on the role of creative director and designer for Barbour’s new collection, entitled ‘The Edit, by Alexa Chung’.

It marks Chung’s fifth collaboration with the brand – and it’s being billed as her ‘most personal’ Barbour collection yet.

The style icon, 40, has long been an endorser of the brand’s iconic British wax jackets, and for this autumn/winter she has collaborated closely with Barbour’s in-house team to create a fresh take on the vintage styles.

The collection includes quilted and wax jackets, cardigans, shirts and, a new addition for Chung, wellington boots. Each item is named after her close friends and family, making it her most personal collaboration to date.

Chung first rose to fame as a style ‘it girl’ of the early Noughties, hailed for her inimitable style and witty personality, with Vogue’s Anna Wintour calling her “a phenomenon”.

Her fashion is known for being quintessentially British, with an eclectic spin on whatever looks she puts together – and her influence is undeniable. When Chung wore a Barbour jacket to

Glastonbury Festival, she sparked a new wave of demand for the classic style.

For this collection, Chung reflected on her lifelong connection with Barbour, noting: “I am so pleased to be exploring a new chapter with Barbour. Designing this collection was a total joy.

“My intention was to create something immediate that reflects my wardrobe, interests and style in this moment, while staying true to the brand’s epic heritage.”

Born in rural Hampshire, Chung drew upon her childhood memories of horse rides through lush fields, as well as stomping through the mud at Glastonbury over the years.

As creative director of the collection, she promised to bring her long-standing relationship with Barbour into every piece.

How to make your summer dresses work in autumn

Here’s how to make your summer dresses still work.

With the right layering and autumnal accessories – not all hope is lost for your favourite summer dress this season.

Despite the clouds closing in, your frilly florals are more versatile than you think. From pastel maxis to breezy baby dolls, there’s still time to revive your go-to summer styles this September.

After all, a wardrobe staple can – and should – last longer than just one season. We here from leading stylists the best ways to wear your summer dresses this autumn.

HOW TO LAYER CORRECTLY

When taking our dresses through to the cooler months, our first port of call is to layer as many knits over the piece as possible, but there’s more to it than that.

“The key to layering lies in incorporate a variety of textures such as velvet, suede, and wool,” says Sally Boddington, CEO of fashion boutique White Coco. “Additionally, selecting colours and accessories that reflect the mood of the season is essential.”

Adding in plum, taupe and espresso tones through your accessories can successfully make a white summer dress look like an autumn staple. To make your ensemble versatile for the erratic British weather, ensure your layers are made from breathable fabrics. “Start with sleeveless or short-sleeved dresses made from a lightweight fabrics such as cotton or linen,” says Philips’ garment expert, Lamprini Fameli, “then add a lightweight cardigan and a slouchy blazer, if you’re commuting, for an office-appropriate look.”

STYLING SUMMER SILHOUETTES

It’s not just your midi dresses that can work in autumn. If you’ve got a mini dress you’re not quite ready to part with –focus on balancing the silhouette with seasonal accessories.

“The aim is to strike a balance between style and comfort by ensuring sufficient coverage,” says Boddington. “Pair your mini dress with a chunky knit, sheer tights or knee-high boots for a sleek look.

“You can also layer a contrasting tank or rich-coloured knit over the dress, and complete the ensemble with statement gold jewellery to add a touch of warmth and sophistication.”

British fashion designer, Karen Millen OBE, says the secret lies in tailoring. “Sharply tailored pieces mean your frame is complimented. These sartorial silhouettes are very flattering and elongate your legs – so they’re great if you’re petite like me.”

Millen’s smart designs have been worn by the likes of The Princess of Wales and British MPs. By pairing your floaty summer dress with a sharply tailored trench or structured wool jacket smartens the look while adding warmth for the chillier months.

If you’re looking for sharp inspiration, Millen looks to Stella McCartney and Phoebe Philo, “They’re geared towards tailoring and quite androgynous designs,” says Millen, “I admire anyone that is a great cutter, because for me there, my go-to is sharp tailoring with a twist.”

BLENDING SEASONAL COLOURS

Pairing your summer brights or vivid pastels with your autumn wardrobe can be a tricky task.

“Opt for a tonal approach by pairing these lighter hues with deeper, richer tones to create a harmonious look,” says Boddington.

“Introduce autumnal textures like wool or suede, which will not only complement the colours, but also add depth and warmth to your outfit, ensuring it remains season appropriate.”

Millen says big colours for autumn/ winter 2024 are rich and warm, “A lot of aubergines and burgundies, which for me, is a great alternative to the blacks that I wear.”

STYLES TO TEST

Rock Chick: Boddington says don’t be afraid to juxtapose accessories with your summer dress. “Toughen up your dress with a leather jacket, biker boots, and chunky silver accessories for an edgy, ‘indie sleaze’ feel.”

Boho Chic: If you’re transitioning your broderie Anglaise dresses into autumn, style the floaty number with a tasselled cardigan, caramel velvet accessories and ankle boots for a relaxed, yet polished, look.

Country Glamour: If you’re channelling the cosy countryside comforts this autumn, pair your summer dress with a palette of greens and browns, “opt for a wax jacket, tall leather boots and a trilby hat for a sophisticated and rural-inspired aesthetic,” says Boddington.

CHILLI PILATES

An exercise studio with a difference.

Nestled in the heart of Harpenden is Chilli Pilates, an exercise studio with a difference.

Specialising in Reformer Pilates with a unique type of exercise to strengthen your muscles, improve your flexibility, tone and sculpt your body while promoting great posture and preventing injury.

Having never tried Chilli Pilates before, I thought it would be easy and slow paced, this wasn’t the case!

Trainer Ross started the session professionally checking on every one’s health needs. He explained the equipment thoroughly. Initially seems complicated but after a quick demonstration it was easier than expected. The studio itself is beautiful, with a high end vibe, red lights and mirrors with an extremely inviting atmosphere, you feel as though you have stepped into a private club.

The class started and it was not as easy as expected, Ross was on hand every time I needed help and to assist with my form. The class were very friendly and supportive, once or twice I looked around for a smile of support; you don’t have to worry about being a newbie.

The class itself worked your full body, upper, lower and core with control. If you are wanting

to feel every muscle this is the class for you, it really tested me in many ways and I loved that. I train regularly, as they say “it’s always good to mix up your training to get results”. Ross was brilliant, throughout every move he explained which area was working, how you could push yourself further and how to make sure your posture was correct, making you feel in safe hands at all times.

During the class I felt very calm and my mind switched off from daily life, I concentrated on the moves and focused on my posture.

There is no question in my mind my body will feel the benefits of my first class in the next few days and I am already looking forward to my next class.

BRAIN-HEALTHY LIFESTYLE

Research indicates that adopting a “brain-healthy lifestyle” can reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s and other dementias, potentially preventing symptoms and slowing or even reversing cognitive decline. One crucial component of this lifestyle is lifelong learning.

Lifelong learning benefits the brain due to its ability to learn and grow as we age, a process known as “brain plasticity.” Regularly challenging and training the brain is essential for this growth. Myelin, the white matter in our brains, plays a key role in improving and maximizing performance on various tasks. The more we practice learning something, the denser the myelin becomes, enhancing our ability to learn better and faster. Myelin acts as a coating for the axons (nerve fibers) of brain cells, facilitating the formation of more neural pathways. This enables faster transmission of electrical impulses, allowing for quicker information processing. As we age, myelin naturally decreases, making it harder to acquire

new skills. However, learning new skills later in life can help regrow myelin and boost brain power.

LEVEL UP LADIES

“Iwas lucky enough to be invited along to the first -Level Up Your Mind and Body event on Sunday 23rd September held at the stunning Cucumber Fields. Level Up Ladies is hosted by the incredible Sara and Jess, two women devoted to bring women together to network, collaborate, share tips and level up in life and business.

A beautiful warm welcome commenced the event with Sara talking us through the day ahead. We started with a beautiful 45 min yoga and flow class with Sara, stretching out the body and finding inner peace through the flow of the movements, the session had me sweating, I thoroughly enjoyed the class. We moved onto a Crystal healing, meditation and stress relief session with Heather Rooke. The session took place in a yurt which had the most beautiful setting with soft cushions, candles and peaceful, calm music.

Heather made the session extremely relaxing from the start. She guided us through crystals and how to utilise the crystal energies to help with stress and anxiety. We also discussed breathing techniques to use, even if we only have 5 minutes a day.

Lunch was then provided by an incredible company called ‘Bite Around The World’ the food was delicious and nutritious, making it a meal we thoroughly enjoyed. After lunch we moved on to an informative talk regarding nutrition delivered by Victoria Bell. We discussed foods, proteins, and the benefits of good fats. We were given time for a QandA session with Victoria who answered all our questions, this included information on Peri Menopause and vitamins.

The last session of the day was stunning.. facilitated by Tia Harris, the session was sound healing.. The soothing sound waves and Tia’s

beautiful singing voice transported you out of the room; this took you into deep meditation and mental clarity. I felt so relaxed and calm, as if all the tension had melted away, leaving me in a peaceful state of mind.

Before the day ended we were presented with a lovely gift to take home from the team and we shared our thoughts of the day and positive comments.

Over all this day totally did what it was supposed to, it worked my body, soul and mind! I felt uplifted, strong and awakened. The Level Up ladies and all the other amazing women on the day were welcoming. I highly recommend you book on the next one for a day you won’t forget!”

REDEFINING TREATMENT FOR KNEE OSTEOARTHRITIS

We look at the cutting-edge injectable hydrogel that delivers long lasting, proven pain relief for knee osteoarthritis without surgery (1-2)

For many of the 8.5 million people in the UK living with knee osteoarthritis (OA),(3) life is hampered by constant pain, limited mobility, and difficulty with simple, everyday tasks. But there’s hope with Arthrosamid® – the first and only permanent injectable treatment that is proven to maintain a significant, long-lasting reduction in knee OA pain – even four years post treatment. (1) Experts are calling it a ‘game-changer.’

People delay seeking help for knee pain, assuming it’s an unavoidable part of ageing. But Arthrosamid® offers patients a new pathway. Unlike traditional treatments, it’s proven to offer respite from knee osteoarthritis with a single treatment, and without the need for surgery.(1-2)

Knee OA: common causes and treatments

Knee OA is a long-term condition where shockabsorbing cartilage is worn away, causing bones to rub together and the joint to become stiff, swollen, and painful. Despite OA being the most common type of arthritis and the fastest cause of disability worldwide (4), the treatment area has seen minimal progression in the last 20 years. With so little known about the exact causes of knee OA, a permanent cure has yet to be discovered. Many people find themselves in an ongoing cycle of treatments, such as painkillers, physiotherapy appointments and various knee joint injectables (e.g. steroids or hyaluronic acid). Despite providing some relief, the effects can often be relatively short-lived, leaving many fearing

Mr James Donaldson, an orthopaedic surgeon from The Wellington Hospital, London offering the Arthrosamid® treatment

that knee replacement surgery is the only longterm answer.

The emergence of Arthrosamid®, however, has been hailed by leading clinicians as an exciting development; the first and only injectable hydrogel that has been proven (5) to help patients with knee osteoarthritis and offers a real alternative to surgery.

What the experts say

Mr James Donaldson, an orthopaedic surgeon from The Wellington Hospital, London offering the Arthrosamid® treatment offering the Arthrosamid® treatment, says: “I’ve treated many patients with Arthrosamid® and have seen them experience significant reductions in pain, as well as improvements in their mobility, and overall quality of life.

“In contrast to other treatments, Arthrosamid® appears to be offering patients long-lasting respite from the pain and immobility of knee osteoarthritis and, in many cases, avoiding or delaying the need for surgery.”

How does Arthrosamid® work?

Arthrosamid® is a hydrogel made up of 2.5 per cent cross-linked polyacrylamide and 97.5 per cent water(5). Arthrosamid® combines with the synovial tissue in the knee to form a permanent scaffold,(6) and it’s this unique characteristic that provides a significant reduction in OA pain over a longer period (1-2) – with one single treatment.

Move freely, live fully (1,2,7)

Jeanne Zivoni is a keen gardener from Hampstead and has suffered from joint issues for many years

but noticed a real improvement since being treated with Arthrosamid®. “The chronic and persistent pain in my knee was starting to get me down and I was keen to look for an alternative to pain medications. I also wanted to help ward off the need for potential knee surgery, as I was concerned about the intensive recovery period necessary to get back to full strength and fitness.

“I decided to give Arthrosamid® a chance and, following a quick procedure with minimal recovery time, I was immediately impressed by the improvements in my pain levels and uplift in overall mobility. As someone who wants to remain fit, active and pain-free for many years to come, I’m confident I made the right decision which has given me a new lease of life!”

CELESTIALLY INSPIRED INTERIORS

The nights are creeping in and darkness is all around – so it’s no wonder our gaze is being pulled upward to what’s going on overhead in the cosmos. The mystery and grace of stars, skies, lunar bodies and their hypnotic arcing movements have descended, bringing a sense of wonder and ethereal beauty into our lives and living spaces.

Fusing circles, spheres and organic forms with metallic finishes, black, white and the odd burst of fiery red, the trend is led by the glowing balls and free-floating formations of lighting, which mimics the soft ambience of distant stars or the phases of the moon. Larger pieces of furniture and accessories are getting in on the act too, with their patterns and colours, as well as extra-terrestrial streamlined and spherical forms.

There are two schools of thought in the celestial interiors trend. Number one is go literal, a la Moooi’s Celestial Carpet by Edward van Vliet which represents the movement of the planets. Inspired by the origins of the universe and the possibility of life on other worlds, it depicts mathematical-style imagery of the universe in soft woven textile. The other take on the celestial trend is more abstract, generally using multiple globular shapes to hint at planetary-style movement and interaction in the way of Cattelan Italia’s Planeta lighting family by Studio Kronos – the blown glass shades of the 1960s-inspired table, ceiling, wall and floor lamps centre around steel frames, each creating a miniature revolving cosmic system.

Approach the trend from a slightly scientific angle, or on a more sculptural level, and either way celebrate the innovative aesthetic of the 1950s/60s space-race with a contemporary minimalism and sleekness. Modern celestial designs feel both organic and futuristic, the copious amount of rounded forms involved creating an atmosphere which is surprisingly calming and tranquil, as well as out of this world. chaplins.co.uk

IS AN INDOOR SWIMMING POOL A GOOD INVESTMENT?

Exploring the Value and Impact on Your Home

Investing in an indoor swimming pool from Origin offers a multitude of benefits that make it a perfect choice for homeowners seeking both luxury and practicality. From year-round enjoyment and increased property value to customisable designs and health benefits, an indoor pool provides a versatile addition to your home. As you consider whether an indoor pool is a good investment, it’s essential to understand how it can impact your home’s value and the potential return on investment (ROI). Here’s a closer look at why an indoor swimming pool might be a wise investment and what you can expect regarding value and ROI:

Investing in an indoor pool can be an excellent choice for many homeowners.

Unlike outdoor pools, indoor pools offer yearround enjoyment regardless of weather conditions. This continuous usability makes them a versatile addition to your home, enhancing your lifestyle and providing a dedicated space for exercise, relaxation and family fun. You’ll also reap the health and wellness advantages, as regular swimming benefits cardiovascular health and muscle strength, reduces stress and contributes to overall mental and physical well-being. Origin offers bespoke indoor pool designs tailored to your preferences and needs. This customisation ensures that the pool complements your lifestyle and integrates seamlessly with your home’s aesthetics, whether as an extension to your home or a stand-alone pool house in your garden.

“This continuous usability makes them a versatile addition to your home, enhancing your lifestyle and providing a dedicated space for exercise, relaxation and family fun”

Indoor pools also offer several practical benefits. They offer greater privacy and security than outdoor options, as they are protected from public view and weather-related damage, reducing maintenance efforts and costs.

DOES AN INDOOR POOL ADD VALUE TO YOUR HOME?

One of the primary considerations when adding an indoor pool is its impact on your property’s value. An indoor pool can indeed increase the value of your home, especially if it is welldesigned.

It adds functional space that can be used for recreation, exercise and relaxation. This additional useable space can make the home more versatile and appealing to buyers. The added value is often reflected in the exclusivity and appeal of having a private year-round swimming facility, which can be particularly attractive in climates where outdoor swimming is not feasible yearround.

Moreover, an indoor pool can differentiate your property from others on the market. It adds a unique feature that makes your home stand out and attracts buyers seeking high-end amenities, potentially leading to a higher resale value and increased speed of sale. It’s also worth mentioning that modern indoor pools come with energy-efficient features and advanced systems that rely on the latest low-carbon alternatives. These improvements can make the home more attractive to buyers who value sustainability and low-maintenance options.

While indoor pools generally enhance property value, their impact is influenced by factors such as the overall quality of the pool and the housing market at the time of sale.

The return on investment for an indoor swimming pool can be substantial, but it varies widely.

When calculating ROI, it’s essential to consider not only the potential increase in property value but also the long-term benefits of having a year-round recreational space. The ability to use the pool throughout the year, combined with all the fun, health benefits and enjoyment the indoor pool will give you and your family, contributes to its overall value.

So, yes, an indoor swimming pool is a significant investment, but one that will enhance both your home’s value and your quality of life. While the financial return may vary, the myriad of benefits you gain from the unique appeal of year-round enjoyment far exceed the initial costs. The health advantages are remarkable, making your investment not just in your property but in your health and happiness. With an indoor pool, you’re not merely adding a feature to your home; you’re creating a lifestyle filled with joy, relaxation and countless family memories, transforming your everyday routine into something extraordinary. Dive into the opportunity to elevate your home and enrich your life—an Origin indoor pool is a step towards a healthier, happier you.

Kelly Hoppen CBE:

‘Accessorising

your home is like putting jewellery on when you get dressed’

The interior designer speaks to Sam Wylie-Harris about her new design collaboration with Marks & Spencer, styling tips and more.

The multi-award-winning designer Kelly Hoppen is famous for her signature neutral palette – taupes, beiges, blacks and creams, greys and whites – which have graced some of the most famous celebrity homes and hotels in the world.

“Whether it’s in Middle East, America or Asia, each one is very different, and it’s exciting,” highlights Hoppen.

With a wide array of projects on the go, she says it’s about understanding the philosophy of how people live, what your client wants, and then creating a story.

“So it’s not just a bedroom. It’s creating a backdrop, like in a theatre.” She continues, “My job is to create the backdrop for people to live.”

Today, at 65, with a career spanning 47 years, having conquered the world of luxurious interiors, she’s launching an exclusive home design collaboration with Marks & Spencer.

“I’m beside myself,” enthuses Hoppen. “It’s

about to be seen, having worked on it for a yearand-a-half in secret, which is not easy for a Leo!”

“With the Marks & Spencer collection, it’s my dream. To give people the tools to be able to do things in their home – it works easily, and can be mixed with different pieces of furniture because it’s neutral enough.”

Hoppen reveals it’s been a lot of work, with four more collections under way. “I’m really happy about it, and something I’ve wanted to do for a long time. The price range is fantastic, and the quality is good.”

She continues: “When you get to know someone, you’re designing something; or if you’re doing a hotel room, you’re imagining how people will use it.

“So it’s got to be practical, but it’s got to be ‘the dream’. It’s got to have lovely textures so you melt into them… there are so many different layers and factors.”

75-piece collection she describes as “affordable”, Hoppen wanted to create something “with beautiful bedding, cushions, vases, lighting, throws, curtains and small pieces of furniture – with all the accessories that go with it.”

“It’s about making people’s home feel luxurious in their own way. Everybody wants to have a beautiful home, but to have affordable luxury was something that I felt wasn’t really out there.”

In her own words: “It’s very much a classic Kelly Hoppen.”

As well as numerous decos inspired by clean lines and curves for a timelessly elegant look, in true five-star hotel style, a high level of comfort is part of the aesthetic.

“When people think about their bedrooms, the bed is the largest piece of furniture. So if you can dress the bed and make it look beautiful with lovely, soft fabrics, that’s half the battle in a bedroom.”

Then you can look at your lighting, suggests Hoppen. Maybe do a feature wall behind the bed, or reupholster your headboard, and then she says it’s all the little bits you put with it.

“Whether it’s a little candle holder to one of the vases, or a beautiful glass vase dish, or whatever’s in the collection that catches your eye.”

“I always say accessorising your home is like putting your jewellery on when you get dressed… it’s jewellery for the home.”

The designer who lives in London with her partner – who she fondly calls ‘The Fox’ –

says when designing your home, texture is all important, but it’s not only soft texture.

“So you’ve done your bed, you’ve got your lovely throw, you’ve got your cushions, you’ve got your art up, then you need some hard texture.

“It’s the same with cooking. You’re adding different tastes to create that stew you’re making. It’s not just the chicken with tomato.

“I know it’s a weird way of looking at it, but it’s the same when you’re creating a home, it’s a recipe, and you just keep adding things – and the different textures will make it feel much warmer.”

And with her confidence-boosting, best-selling interior books to help create a Hoppen home of your own, are these part of the hardware to make everything feel balanced?

“I always say to people, books are literally your best friend when you’re trying to accessorise.

“If you’ve got shelves and you’ve got books, lay them flat and then do them randomly. So you can put objects on them, creating more interest.

“On a coffee table, people get scared of what to put on them. If you’ve got a pile of books, put a candle so it’s slightly higher.”

She says you can then place a vase to the left. “Which is slightly lower, so it’s different heights on a coffee table. But as my partner says, you need to leave enough space to put a drink or cup of coffee.”

Visually gorgeous, curvaceous vases feature among the M&S collection – with floral arrangements part of her signature style. “For me, any flowers are nice, just as long as they are one colour.”

With meticulous attention to detail, black and white photography is one of Hoppen’s passions. A case in point, she’ll soon be doing a masterclass on Instagram demonstrating how to frame and hang them.

“Every mount should be white or cream, or grey or black, depending on the look or feel of your room, but I would go for white.”

If you have two really beautiful black and white photographs, she says to get a simple black frame and have them both exactly the same size on either side of the bed.

“But if you’ve got a wall, say, across from your bed, you could do a collage of different sizes; or it could be pictures of your family or kids.

“It’s the way it’s framed that’s important, so every frame should be the same.”

Terzetto Stone

Leading specialists in the highest quality natural stone and porcelain tiles for inside and outside the home.

When it comes to choosing tiles for your upcoming projects, the choice of products available is endless. Terzetto’s unrivalled collections will give you endless interior design options, encompassing timeless favourites as well as brand-new discoveries to keep up with latest interior trends.

Terzetto’s natural stone collections are a timeless, natural beauty at its best, offering longevity and a truly unique character. Their new natural stone collections include tumbled limestone and marble chequerboard tiles, a staple pattern in interior design that adds a rich character to any hallway, kitchen, or living space. Many opt for a traditional black and white chequer look, such as Venetian Chequer White & Nero Marble and Casella & Carrara Tumbled Marble Chequer. However, if you’re after something a little different, Terzetto offer an innovative take on traditional black and white chequer by introducing other colour options.

Olivestone Limestone & Carrara Tumbled Marble Chequer features beige and olive green tones, contrasted with muted golds and milky white hues. Similarly, Crema Pearl Tumbled Chequer Limestone combines deep tones of oatmeal and grey with creamy shades of vanilla.

Many of the limestone and marble found in Terzetto’s chequer collections are also available

in a brick format, such as Carrara, Olivestone, Ashlar, and Cathedral Tumbled Bricks. These bricks can be used to experiment with different tile laying patterns, from a simple stack bond to a more complex herringbone pattern. Terzetto’s new Authentic Ashlar Limestone Outdoor Acid Washed & Tumbled Bricks allows you to take this look to your patio or any outdoor space.

If you love the idea of a chequerboard floor or herringbone brick pattern but desire a more durable and practical alternative to natural stone, many of Terzetto’s chequer and brick collections are available in a porcelain tile and offer a more generous choice of colour. For example, their Victorian Pastello Chequer collection and Monaco, Majorca and Palos Brick collections, are available in a variety of colours, from striking bold shades to softer muted tones.

Visit one of Terzetto’s 5 UK showrooms to gain expert advice and takeaway free samples, or browse their tile collections online and request their new collections brochure.

Why Reupholstering is the Future of Sustainable Design

In today’s world of fast consumerism, we often overlook the beauty of craftsmanship in favour of convenience. But reupholstering furniture is an art that invites us to slow down, appreciate quality, and embrace sustainability. Rather than contributing to a throwaway culture, reupholstery offers a costeffective way to breathe new life into cherished pieces while preserving their sentimental value. At House of Interiors, we believe furniture should be treasured, not discarded.

Our expert reupholstery service transforms your pieces, whether through a simple fabric refresh or a complete redesign. Each item is stripped down to its frame, carefully reinforced, and meticulously reupholstered using premium materials of your choice. The result? A beautifully crafted, custommade piece tailored to your exact needs and style. It’s more than just restoration—it’s a reinvention.

Choosing to reupholster isn’t just an aesthetic decision; it’s an eco-friendly choice that reduces waste and extends the life of your furniture. With a vast selection of luxurious fabrics, leathers, and textiles, you can personalise your furniture while making a sustainable statement. In an age where mass production rules, reupholstering stands as a

testament to the importance of preserving both craftsmanship and the environment.

Reupholstery allows us to maintain the rich character of vintage and antique pieces, enhancing their comfort with modern materials without compromising their history. Why throw away what can be beautifully restored? By choosing reupholstery, you’re not only saving your furniture—you’re preserving the art of design for future generations.

Our Kent Project Wins the International Design & Architecture Awards 2024

We are thrilled to announce that our Kent project has been awarded the prestigious International Design & Architecture Award 2024 in the Luxury Residence - UK category, hosted by Design et al. This honour represents not only a significant achievement for our team but also a testament to the incredible collaboration with our client, a property developer who sought to elevate his personal build with a higher-end specification.

From the very beginning, we were entrusted with a vision that went beyond the ordinary. Our involvement in the project started at the planning stage, which allowed us to provide a detailed architectural specification package that covered everything from bathrooms to flooring, lighting, and interior elements. This early collaboration ensured that every detail of the home was meticulously planned before we proceeded with our full interior design service.

The client’s brief was to create a high-end family home that could also serve as a space for entertaining friends. As the father of two children,

it was crucial that the home felt welcoming and inclusive for the entire family, making the transition into their new home as seamless as possible. We took great care in involving the children throughout the process, ensuring the design reflected both sophistication and the warmth of a family residence.

While the client brought a few ideas to the table and remained actively involved throughout the 18-month journey, they trusted us to develop and expand upon their vision. We worked closely with them, holding regular meetings and providing updates to ensure the project stayed on course while aligning with their goals. This close collaboration was instrumental in the success of the project, as we were able to follow through on all fundamental developments on-site.

This award is not just a win for us but a celebration of the partnership we shared with our client, the dedication of our team, and the collective creativity that brought this breathtaking home to life.

We’d love to hear your thoughts on this project! aji.co.uk
