The venue itself resonates with history of course, and so has worked its magic as a marvellous time machine, inspiring many of the musical choices.

The 2024 artist line-up includes newcomers to Hatfield alongside old friends: the Bechstein Piano Trio, the Consone Quartet, Magnus Johnston, Maggie Cole, Gwilym Simcock, Emma Rawicz, Victor Maslov, Max Baillie, Brett Dean, Recordare, Kaleidoscope Chamber Collective, Claire Booth, Ensemble 360, Merryweather Theatre and students from the Purcell School. This wonderful line-up of performers will transport audiences through the ages from Dowland to a world premiere of a new Handel/Beethoven/Hendrix commission arranged by Simon Parkin and back to Brahms, pausing en route to commemorate some significant anniversaries: Fauré, Schoenberg, the BBC New Generation Artists.

Now, the storied jeweller is entering a new chapter, relocating to a lavish new boutique just a few doors down from their current site. This move is more than just a change of address—it marks the beginning of a new era for luxury in the region. At the heart of this transformation is the addition of a master watchmaker, a rare talent who brings decades of experience working with the most prestigious Swiss brands.

This is a significant moment for the town of Bedford, which is poised to become a new epicentre of horological excellence. The master watchmaker joining Baker Brothers is a true artisan, a craftsman whose skills are typically reserved for the luxury capitals of the world. This isn’t just shopping, it’s an immersive journey into the world of luxury watchmaking.

“For us, the addition of such a highly skilled craftsman is more than just a business move; it’s a cultural milestone,” says Director Lizzie McAuley. “Bedford has been our home for decades, and we hope that our investment will enhance the town’s reputation, drawing watch enthusiasts and collectors from far and wide, and adding a new layer of prestige to the local community.”

SUPERIOR : INFERIOR

A Class & Status in Roman Britain Exhibition at Verulamium Museum. Until 11 November

Anew thought-provoking exhibition at Verulamium Museum, SUPERIOR : INFERIOR seeks to get people talking by asking visitors to examine social class and status in Roman Verulamium and think about those concepts within society today.

The exhibition runs until November 11 and is guest curated by ancient historian Andrew Deathe.

Andrew said: “Social status was important to the Roman residents of Verulamium and this exhibition explores how they showed and used their social position.

“For me, the best history makes you think ‘What would I do if I was there?’, so we encourage visitors to think about how we view class today, how they would react in different social situations and how they would measure themselves against the ancient citizens?”

Visitors are taken on an interactive journey where they meet seven pairs of imagined inhabitants of ancient Verulamium whose stories vividly come to life through designs by local St Albans illustrator, Simon Maskell. Each pairing represents a different situation and uses archaeological objects, imagined conversations and other clues to enable visitors to decide who would have been perceived as higher status and who of lower status.

Catherine

Newley, Audience Development Manager at St Albans Museums, said: “This unique exhibition is part of our ‘Revisiting the Romans’ series of interventions at the museum. Regular visitors will know that you can explore the wonders of Roman life, be immersed in recreated Roman rooms and admire the craftsmanship of the intricate large-scale mosaics on display but through this intervention, visitors are encouraged to explore how the occupants of Roman Verulamium viewed their social class and status - and discover how it affected their everyday lives.

“It’s been a delight to work with Andrew on this incredibly insightful and absorbing project and we look forward to seeing how visitors perceive class and society.”

THE DETAILS

Verulamium Museum, St Michael’s Street, St Albans, AL3 4SW, is open Monday to Friday 10am – 4.30pm (last admission 4pm) and Saturday 11am –3.30pm (last admission 3pm). Admission charges apply. Visit stalbansmuseums.org.uk and follow @stalbansmuseums

AUTUMN AT THE ABBEY THEATRE

The Company of Ten is delighted to be celebrating its 90th season – opening on 13th September. The company was founded in 1934 and staged its first production A Murder has been Arranged in Culver Hall on Culver Road. In 1965 St Albans City Council offered a lease on land by the, then new, Westminster Lodge Leisure Centre. Sir Michael Redgrave laid the foundation stone of the first purpose built theatre to be built in St Albans since Roman times!

The theatre also enjoyed a Royal visit when in April 1968 Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother came to the opening performance of The Recruiting Officer

Our 90th season opener is Hay Fever, one of Coward’s most enduring works, and a masterful comedy of manners that explores the eccentricities of the Bliss family—a group of artistic, selfabsorbed individuals whose theatrical personalities turn a quiet weekend in the country into a

whirlwind of misunderstandings and romantic entanglements. When each family member invites a guest to stay, the stage is set for an uproarious clash of egos, miscommunication and comic mischief.

Director Alison Wright says: ‘It’s fabulous to open the Company of Ten’s 90th season with the Coward classic Hay Fever celebrating its hundredth year! The play follows the antics of the eccentric Bliss family and their hapless weekend guests. Coward neatly described it as “a light comedy in three acts” and we’re having tremendous fun with it. Hay Fever is all about style — it’s beautifully crafted with the style and wit of Coward’s exquisite writing complementing the style of our 1925 country-house setting, costume and props. We’re going to do it in style!’

The season continues with The Father, a tragi-comedy, followed by the lively musical, Nell Gwynn before.

To beer or not to beer? This festival is for everyone!

Over recent years, there’s been a proliferation in festivals showcasing people’s favourite drinks. While they may take place locally, many of these events are commercially-run, and often replicated in various towns and cities.

In St Albans though, there’s one such event that genuinely is local. And now into its 27th year, it can lay genuine claim to being Hertfordshire’s original festival – as well as one of the most energetic and exciting.

St Albans Beer & Cider Festival is, naturally, an event that puts beer and cider at the heart of things. Showcasing hundreds of different beers across all styles – traditional and modern – plus a vast selection of ciders, it’s long been a destination for serious enthusiasts.

But these days it offers something for everyone. With premium wine and spirits now on offer too, a diverse selection of delicious street food, plus a brilliant entertainment line-up including nine live bands, it’s simply a great day or evening out, whatever your tipple.

Unusually, the festival is non-profit making. Not only does that benefit the local community, but it means great value, with ticket prices set much lower than other similar events. In fact, you can

purchase a ticket package for St Albans Beer & Cider Festival that includes your first few drinks and a souvenir glass, for less than it would cost you just to get through the gate at some other festivals! Being organised by local volunteers also makes for a great, genuinely local atmosphere – not corporate uniformity parachuted into the area. So whether you’re a beer drinker or not, why not check out what this regular fixture in the St Albans calendar has to offer!

INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS GUIDE

THE FINEST SCHOOLS IN THE UK

LOCKERS PARK

The school has evolved over the past 150 years and continues to do so. We embrace change and recognise that boys today need a different education than in the past. However, some aspects of the school remain constant. We cherish the history and traditions that are integral to our boys’ development. Our goal is to nurture young men who are considerate, respectful, resilient, and who develop a lifelong love of learning.

Lockers Park offers several distinctive features that set us apart. Our personalised approach to education, combined with a small student body, allows boys to excel in a variety of areas. The bond between staff and students is particularly strong, with our dedicated team committed to nurturing each boy’s growth and offering education without limits. Our Learner Profile focuses on key skills that will drive our boys’ success, which they apply to all aspects of school life.

The advantages of single-sex education are clear, allowing boys to develop at their own pace without comparisons to girls. We embrace each boy’s unique learning style, fostering a hands-on approach that encourages them to explore the “why” of things. As they mature, they can ask questions freely, without fear of embarrassment, and pursue a wide range of activities without gender stereotypes. Our boarding environment further extends these opportunities, offering a 12hour day and an optional Saturday school program, providing everything needed for excellent results and a lifelong enthusiasm for learning. We have appointed a Director of Outdoor Learning, so

we literally take education beyond the classroom, whether it’s through Forest School, environmental activities, or re-enacting scenes from Harry Potter during guided reading. There’s a definite benefit to getting the boys outdoors.

Beyond this, our boys enjoy an enviable range of opportunities, including excellent sports, unparalleled music, art, and drama programs. Our choir regularly competes and sings in Chapel, and we offer them the chance to travel – whether it’s visiting CERN, skiing, or examining volcanoes in Iceland. From 7:30am to 7:30pm, the activities are endless: chess, debating, fencing, robotics, and many more. Our recent sports hall refurbishment, complete with a climbing wall, fitness studio, and golf simulator, further enhances what we offer. lockerspark.co.uk

St Margaret’s School Hosts High Performance Sports Event for Elite Young Athletes with Olympic Badminton Player

Independent day and boarding school, St Margaret’s, recently hosted a High Performance Programme (HPP) event for its elite young athletes as part of its commitment to nurturing and mentoring sporting talent while giving children opportunities to meet role models from the sporting world. As part of the event, St Margaret’s welcomed Olympic badminton player, Gail Emms MBE onto the school campus, who delivered some special badminton masterclass workshops for elite junior school pupils in Year 5 and 6 as well as senior pupils in Years 8 to 11.

Despite it being a particularly warm day, the pupils displayed lots of enthusiasm, energy and drive, fully embracing the badminton sessions while being keen to learn new skills and techniques. Gail Emms worked closely with the selected children looking at aspects such as speed of movement, with the children soon learning that playing badminton at an elite level is hard work.

A badminton player since the age of four, Emms was first chosen to represent England in 1995 and regularly played for her country until her

retirement from professional sport in 2008, she said, “Visiting St Margaret’s has been a wonderful experience. I felt instantly welcomed and was super impressed by the children’s energy and the effort they showed. It was also wonderful to see the older children letting their guard down, asking intelligent questions and generally having fun.”

After the workshops, the children and their parents attended a special evening presentation and panel discussion which shared more insight about the school’s High Performance Programme (HPP) and included talks from St Margaret’s students who shared their own personal experiences in the world of elite sport.

“It was fantastic to see that sport at St Margaret’s is not only a very serious addition to school life but is also given recognition more widely from a careers perspective too. Playing sport at an elite level can be very tough, you need to learn to love pressure, absorb everything, ask your coaches questions and keep a training diary too. The more you can do to prepare from a young age, the better,” added Emms. stmargarets-school.org.uk

Top tips for settling into a school nursery

Sarum Hall School takes in a full class of new recruits to its nursery this year. Mrs Hooper, teacher at the school, gives us her top tips to settle your child into nursery life:

Prepare, but don’t over prepare your child

Speak positively and regularly to your child in the run up to their new start, but don’t make them anxious with too much talk. This might include taking your child for walks to their new school building and getting them excited about new uniform. But it’s critical that a child doesn’t become anxious, so avoid over-preparing them.

Meet and communicate with the teacher: they are on the same team as you!

Sharing information with staff is really important. Sometimes the smallest snippet of information can really help. It’s key that teachers and parents are on the same team and work seamlessly together.

Work on your child’s self-sufficiency

Try to make sure your child is self-sufficient where possible. Can they put their own socks on yet? Can they carry a plate? At Sarum Hall we don’t expect children to have mastered any of these things, but an introduction will help them on their way to settling into their new independent life.

Saying goodbye in the first few weeks

The first week or two of drop offs are the hardest. Say goodbye swiftly, calmly, and with a smile. Accept that your child might cry and it will feel traumatic. In most cases children will have stopped crying within 10 minutes of a parent leaving.

Organise to spend time with a trusted friend after drop off to fill those emotional first moments after saying goodbye so that you have the right support too.

No news is good news!

Updates to your money phone will be fewer compared to other childcare settings. Be assured that the school will get in touch if there is a problem. Try and see it as a good thing that you aren’t hearing from the school about every meal, toilet trip, or plaster given.

Be prepared for a very tired child!

A school day can be extremely exhausting. Try not to plan too many after school activities, and allow for early bedtimes. Be ready for tears and tantrums, and possible sleep disruption while they make the adjustment to their new routine.

ST. ALBANS MATHS TUTORS

We started St. Albans Maths Tutors in September 2009. A joint enterprise of two highly qualified senior maths teachers with over 40 years combined teaching experience in both state and private schools. Our primary aim was to offer high quality Maths tuition to pupils in Secondary schools to become more proficient and confident in Maths in order to pass their exams.

Our aim was underpinned by our philosophy:

• To teach in a way that everyone can understand,

• To make learning enjoyable,

• To motivate students to learn,

• To inspire students to achieve academic success and confidence.

Since 2009, we have successfully demonstrated that our philosophy works. We have taught

numerous students of varying abilities in private and state schools to achieve their full academic potential and succeed in their exams.

The Success Story Continues

Our success in Maths, led to an overwhelming demand from parents for primary tuition and also secondary tuition for English and Science

In June 2023, we seized the opportunity and took the initiative to extend our enterprise beyond the boundaries of Maths, and opened “The Tutor Hub” in Redbourn High Street.

“The Tutor Hub” is a tuition centre that has given us the opportunity to branch out into primary tuition by offering Maths and English and offering secondary tuition in English and Science. We now have an extended highly qualified tuition team with excellent specialist Primary tutors and outstanding specialist Secondary tutors who share our vision commitment and passion.

Since 2009 our tuition services have changed, however our educational philosophy and aim to deliver excellent face to face tuition remains unchanged. Sandra & Jae Simon stalbans-mathstutor.co.uk

Do you work in education? Could you use some of your skills to become a foster carer?

Hertfordshire County Council urgently needs people to become foster carers and is appealing to anyone with the passion to care for a child in a need to find out more about fostering. There are currently 1,000 children in care in Hertfordshire, many of whom are looking for a loving and supportive home.

There is a particular need to find people to foster teenagers and sibling groups.

Helen and Dave, who foster teenagers, still keep in touch with those who have moved on to independence.

Helen said: “It’s a completely new way of life, having a house full of lovely young people who keep us young! We are a fostering family; our children have embraced fostering too, and they’ve been amazing.”

More than half of children in care in Hertfordshire belong to sibling groups and of those, 54% live in different homes. While some are separated for personal reasons, for many it is because there are not enough carers with the space or time to foster siblings.

Hertfordshire County Council is also looking for people to become intensive foster carers to provide safe and nurturing foster homes for these children.

If you are aged over 21, and have a spare room, please contact us to find out more. Fostering is flexible and there are lots of different types of

fostering to suit your needs.

Do you already work with children or young people with complex and additional needs? Or are you simply caring and have the passion to help a child in need?

You may have the skills needed to foster children who would otherwise be cared for in residential children’s homes, owing to their exceptional needs.

Hertfordshire County Council is looking for Intensive Foster Carers who will be trained and will also be paid a yearly £65,000 skills and payments allowance.

Carers will be offered therapeutic parenting training, and carers and children will receive ongoing support by a dedicated team of outreach workers.

PRIVATELY EDUCATED PEOPLE DOMINATE TOP BRITISH JOBS

The study, by the Sutton Trust education charity, shows that virtually every key profession is dominated by privately educated pupils grabbing the senior management/director positions

Their grip on power is most noticeable in the judiciary, where 74 per cent of leading judges (those in the High Court or Court of Appeal) were privately educated.

Figures in the report also show that one in three MPs (32 per cent) was privately educated – as were half the members of the Conservative Cabinet. Even in Jeremy Corbyn’s Shadow Cabinet, 13 per cent of members went to private school. Nationally, the figure is just 7 per cent.

The report, carried out by Dr Philip Kirby, goes on to show that 71 per cent of senior Army officers – two-star generals and above – went to private schools. Only 12 per cent attended comprehensives.

“The higher echelons of journalism are also dominated by the private sector, with 51 per cent educated in independent schools”

In medicine, 61 per cent of doctors were privately educated while 22 per cent went to selective state grammar schools and just 16 per cent to comprehensives. The list goes on – 48 per cent of civil servants were educated privately, 29 per cent went to selective grammar schools and 23 per cent to comprehensives.

The higher echelons of journalism are also dominated by the private sector, with 51 per cent educated in independent schools. And of those chief executives of FTSE 100 companies who were educated in the UK, 34 per cent were privately educated.

Nearly half the top actors – 42 per cent of Bafta Award winners – went to private schools, fuelling criticism that the profession is becoming more elitist.

“Our research shows that your chances of reaching the top in so many areas of British life are so much better if you went to an independent school,” said Sir Peter Lampl, the chairman of the Sutton Trust. “As well as academic achievement, an independent education tends to develop the essential skills such as confidence, articulacy and teamwork, which are vital to career success.

Understanding how boys think, grow and learn!

Why an all boys school? There are of course obvious differences between the ways that boys and girls learn with significant research outlining the benefits of single-sex education, so of course, I can champion the merits for our all boys school. However, as a parent first and teacher second, for me it is not about Boys vs Co-ed, it is about finding the right environment for your son to flourish. Choosing the right school for your child doesn’t have to be an over-complicated decision. Ultimately, we all wish for our children to be happy, engaged and challenged, after all that is when we are all at our very best. I believe when you walk into a school you instantly feel if it is the right environment for your child.

I am proud to represent Aldwickbury as a dynamic and forward-thinking school but also an environment that retains and upholds traditional values. Our broad and balanced curriculum both in and outside the classroom allows boys the freedom to be themselves whilst ensuring they make excellent academic progress, preparing them

for not only for the next steps of their education but for life.

I invite you and your family to come and visit and see the school in action. Please contact us to book onto our open morning or to arrange a personal visit. I look forward to welcoming you.

HOW IS EXERCISE GOOD FOR THE BRAIN ?

Exercise affects the brain in many different ways.

It augments the release of hormones which provide an excellent environment for the growth of brain cells.

Exercise also promotes brain plasticity by stimulating growth of new connections between cells in many important cortical areas of the brain.

Research has shown that exercise increase growth factors in the brain which makes it easier for the brain to grow new neuronal connections.

Also exercise make you “feel good” the same antidepressant-like effects associated with the “runner’s high” has been correlated with a drop in stress hormones and a Swedish study showed that the antidepressant effect of running was also associated with more cell growth in the hippocampus, an area of the brain responsible for learning and forming memories The study

reported “Thus, suppression of cell proliferation in the hippocampus could constitute one of the mechanisms that underlie depression, and physical activity might be an efficient antidepressant.”

CHILLI PILATES

An exercise studio with a difference.

Nestled in the heart of Harpenden is Chilli Pilates, an exercise studio with a difference.

Specialising in Reformer Pilates with a unique type of exercise to strengthen your muscles, improve your flexibility, tone and sculpt your body while promoting great posture and preventing injury.

Having never tried Chilli Pilates before, I thought it would be easy and slow paced, this wasn’t the case!

Trainer Ross started the session professionally checking on every one’s health needs. He explained the equipment thoroughly. Initially seems complicated but after a quick demonstration it was easier than expected. The studio itself is beautiful, with a high end vibe, red lights and mirrors with an extremely inviting atmosphere, you feel as though you have stepped into a private club.

The class started and it was not as easy as expected, Ross was on hand every time I needed help and to assist with my form. The class were very friendly and supportive, once or twice I looked around for a smile of support; you don’t have to worry about being a newbie.

The class itself worked your full body, upper, lower and core with control. If you are wanting

to feel every muscle this is the class for you, it really tested me in many ways and I loved that. I train regularly, as they say “it’s always good to mix up your training to get results”. Ross was brilliant, throughout every move he explained which area was working, how you could push yourself further and how to make sure your posture was correct, making you feel in safe hands at all times.

During the class I felt very calm and my mind switched off from daily life, I concentrated on the moves and focused on my posture.

There is no question in my mind my body will feel the benefits of my first class in the next few days and I am already looking forward to my next class.

A Touch of Glass

As we move further into 2024, glass remains a pivotal material in interior design, celebrated for its delicate nature and timeless appeal. Brands like Brokis, Gallotti & Radice, Fiam Italia, and Glas Italia are leading the charge, each offering distinct interpretations that range from minimalist to avant-garde. Whether through the sculptural forms of dining tables, the low-lines of coffee tables, or the poetic luminosity of lighting, these brands are showcasing that glass as a material is the crystal clear-choice for contemporary living spaces. Glass is here to stay, and it is more innovative and elegant than ever. Enjoy this transparent list of the greatest in Glass and where to start building with one of natures most delicate materials.

DINING TABLES:

Gallotti & Radice perfects the art of large-scale minimalism with their dining tables utilising clean, sleek lines. The use of clear and smoked glass in the Platium table creates a sophisticated, almost ethereal appearance. The combination of glass with metal accents, particularly in gold or brass finishes, adds warm classic luxury to the otherwise modern designs. If you’re looking to go a step further and Fiam Italia’s Ragno dining table is a veritable masterpiece of glasswork. Almost as if it were carved from a singular block of marble and the table was found within.

COFFEE TABLES:

Glas Italia’s coffee tables are a celebration of playful geometry, featuring bold shapes and unexpected angles. This year, the focus is on transparency and colour contrast, with many designs incorporating clear and tinted glass in striking combinations. This is emphasised perfectly in the Shimmer coffee table. Alternatively, Fiam Italia continues to explore organic, flowing shapes in their coffee tables, which are often inspired by natural elements. The brand’s use of curved glass creates soft, uniquely stunning forms that add a sense of movement to living spaces. The Atlas coffee table is a prime example of this with a singular linear curve running through the surface that smoothens your space.

LIGHTING:

Brokis remains at the forefront of lighting design with their poetic, hand-blown glass lights that blend artisanal craftsmanship with the efficiency of modern technology. Their lighting collections focus on organic shapes and natural materials. There is a noticeable trend toward using opal glass, which diffuses light softly, creating a warm, inviting ambiance with pieces such as the Geomteric collection, that utilises beautiful shapes and unique patterns to match the inviting glow of the light itself. While they traditional work with glass, they recently have begun the integration of wood with

their pieces to further display their ability mix the delicate and the durable, this can be seen in the new wooden version of their flagship “Muffins Lamp” a beautiful collaboration between two materials synonymous with luxury interiors.

If you would like to see one of the largest collections of Brokis in the UK then a quick visit to second floor of the Chaplins Furniture showroom in Northwest London would prove to be an enlightening experience. From the latest luminary solutions to stalwarts of the Brokis catalogue that provided them a platform to build their prestige in the glasswork world. You’re likely to see some stunning pieces from the other brands mentioned in this article along the way with 180+ iconic and innovative brands available. chaplins.co.uk

TOMAS KITCHEN LIVING

The Tomas brand has become synonymous with the ‘Classic Modern’ style. It’s an understated and timeless look, which can be described as ‘modern, yet not overly modern’.

All Tomas kitchens and furniture are manufactured at their production centre in Cambridge. Their handle-less naturalSHEER model sits at the centre of their collection and is perhaps the archetypal Tomas Kitchen. Curvy corners feature in many of their ergonomical designs, which make the kitchen space so beautiful, functional and lovely to live with. Other models available include the pared back minimalSHEER based on a cubic and minimalistic theme and decoSHEER, which has more of a vintage feel.

Another nice detail is the palette of Tomas colours, which are taken from five abstract oil paintings inspiring the earthy and original ‘Abstract Five’ colour range. Additionally, any colour can be made or matched and there are also many options for natural woods, book-matching and metallic.

The design sessions known as ‘live design’ take place round the computer either in the showroom or remotely. Difficult spaces are un-locked and unique storage solutions developed. Says Head of Design Tom Hinton, “Working closely with the customer is an essential part of what we do! Bouncing ideas round and creating a bespoke kitchen for the individual or young family,

whatever their requirements, is hugely satisfying”. Sustainability, Locality, Quality and Longevity are just some of the key ingredients that makes a Tomas kitchen a green kitchen. By building a product locally that stands the test of time, they have managed to create a kitchen that has an exceptionally low carbon footprint, since it wouldn’t need replacing. From this starting point, the materials chosen are from sustainable sources and ultimately renewable and recyclable.

The company has its own team of fitters and works closely with plumbers, electricians, project managers and architects to co-ordinate the installation process.

The Tomas Kitchen Living AUTUMN SALE is in full swing with big discounts on appliances and other treats, so there’s never a better time to put a deposit down on your dream kitchen. tomas-kitchen-living.co.uk

Debbie Leigh, Design Manager at ILIV advises, “One of the quickest ways to bring in that warm and cosy feeling we all long for during the cooler months, is to add layers of soft furnishings to our homes, such as throws, cushions and curtains. From cosy living rooms to snuggly bedrooms, cleverly layered textiles not only create a cohesive look but help to create a feeling of warmth.

“Soft furnishing have a significant impact on the overall feel of a room. Layer plains and patterns carefully; when using bold patterns on upholstery it is best to keep the cushions plain or go for a plain fabric for the upholstery and experiment with a mixture of colours and patterns on scatter cushions”, continues Debbie.

CHOOSING CURTAINS

Debbie advises, “For a subtle look, pick a fabric for your curtains that is slightly lighter or darker than your wall tone. If you prefer a contrasting colour, choose an accent colour from in the room, drawing a shade from a cushion or throw for example. Another great tip is to hang thermal lined curtains; good quality, lined curtains are worth the investment. They are suitable all-year-round offering temperature control and privacy and their ability to help keep the cold air from seeping into the home makes them particularly useful during the autumn and winter months. Blackout and thermal linings are also great for bedroom curtains as they help to keep the room warm, increase energy efficiency and block out unwanted light promoting a good night’s sleep.” iliv.co.uk

PAINT IT BLACK

Lick & M·A·C introduce limited-edition paint

In a world first, Lick and M·A·C have teamed up to create a limited-edition matt paint ‘M·A·C BLACK 40’ in a rich, jet black with only black undertones.

The collaboration highlights the versatility of black in both beauty and interiors, showcasing how M·A·C black 40 is the one colour that fits all.

Available only on Lick.com and in-store for a limited time only.

Lick and M·A·C have come together in a bold new collaboration to announce the launch of M·A·C Black 40 - a limited edition paint which celebrates black as the ultimate colour for selfexpression.

For 40 years, M·A·C has empowered people to express themselves through makeup and colour, now they have joined forces with Lick to reframe an historically daunting colour in both beauty and interiors as inspiring and accessible. M·A·C Black 40 is a rich, matt jet black which is versatile and

timeless - the one colour that fits all.

“M·A·C black 40 is the colour that everyone can have in their homes. It’s truly versatile: it adds dimension and contrast to any room, and will effortlessly accent your furniture and decor, whatever your style.” - Tash Bradley, Director of Interior Design and Colour Psychologist at Lick

Black is widely regarded as the colour of rebelliousness and nonconformity, and is commonly associated with words such as ‘brave’, ‘bold’ and ‘daring’; this collaboration challenges this sentiment by highlighting four different ways to decorate with M·A·C Black 40:

Colour drenching: “Colour drenching with black will help to create a very calm environment. If you have a small, north-facing room, this is a great option as black will absorb the shadows, blue the edges of the space and add heaps of personality.”

50/50 decorating: “This monochrome effect will help to trick the eye and open up your space, especially if you use black on the bottom 50% of the room and a light neutral on the top 50%. The key thing to remember is to ensure everything in that lower 50% should also be black, including radiators and skirting boards.”

Artistic pattern: “Black pairs with every other colour, so you can have a bit of fun with it. Pattern play helps to open up a room and vertical stripes will elongate your space. Whatever your style, black is a truly versatile colour with lots of potential for creativity.”

Accent colour: “Every room can benefit from an accent of black to bring contrast and depth. The best way to do this is to use black to accentuate a feature, such as a staircase or fireplace, to draw your attention to the architectural highlights of your home.”

Tash Bradley, Director of Interior Design and Colour Psychologist at Lick said: “I’ve always been fascinated by the unique role black plays in our lives. In fashion, it represents elegance and sophistication, however, in the world of interiors, many view black as a colour that requires a level of bravery and boldness to decorate with. We are challenging that perception, showing that M·A·C Black 40 is the colour that everyone can have in their homes. This rich, matt hue absorbs all natural light, so if you’ve got a room that lacks sunlight, such as a bedroom or small space, lean into that by colour drenching your space to create a calming

and cocooning effect.”

Developed through Lick’s industry-leading formulation process, M·A·C Black 40 has unrivalled depth of colour and is made with the highest-quality pigments. This limited edition hue is inspired by M·A·C’s iconic branding and the new M·A·Cximal Silky Matte Lipstick in the shade Caviar.

Dom Skinner, Director of Make-up Artistry at M·A·C said: “Celebrating M·A·C’s 40th year with Lick has been an honour, as black is at the heart of M·A·C’s DNA. What has been the most exciting part of this collaboration with Lick has been exploring the versatility of black. Showing how it can be harnessed in multiple ways from fierce rebellion to clean minimalist, from a simple sheer sweep to dynamic overdrawn intensity, black can go from cool to chic and proves why it’s a must for any trendsetter.”

Whether used as a dominant colour on your walls or as an accent colour on your woodwork, M·A·C Black 40 is the perfect choice for creating bold and timeless spaces. This elegant and empowering black pairs seamlessly with Lick White 02 for a high-contrast monochromatic look or Lick White 05 for a softer, neutral scheme. M·A·C Black 40 is the new go-to for interiors lovers and beauty enthusiasts alike to celebrate and elevate their style identity.

For minimalists and maximalists alike, M·A·C Black 40 is the one colour that fits all. lick.com/uk

House of Interiors

As the Lead Designer and CEO of House of Interiors, I have had the privilege of transforming numerous spaces into beautiful, functional homes that reflect the unique personalities of their owners. Interior design is more than just selecting colours, furniture, and fabrics; it’s about creating an environment that promotes well-being, efficiency, and happiness.

Interior designers excel at understanding and bringing your vision to life. While homeowners often have ideas, they may struggle to articulate them. A designer can ask the right questions, listen to your needs, and develop a cohesive plan that balances aesthetics with functionality. Whether it’s optimising storage in a small kitchen or creating a serene bedroom, designers tailor spaces to your specific requirements.

One significant advantage of hiring an interior designer is access to a network of trusted contractors and craftsmen. This network ensures quality workmanship and reliable service, essential for sourcing unique materials or hiring skilled tradespeople. Designers also possess a trained eye for detail and deep knowledge of design principles, ensuring your space is harmonious and balanced.

An interior designer saves you time and helps avoid costly mistakes. Managing a home renovation or redesign can be overwhelming, but a designer handles logistics, freeing you from the details. They guide you through decisions, preventing errors like choosing the wrong paint colour or buying furniture that doesn’t fit. This

ensures your investment is well spent and the outcome meets your expectations.

Moreover, professional interior design can boost your property’s value. A well-designed home not only attracts buyers but also commands a higher price. Designers understand trends and timeless principles, ensuring your home remains appealing for years. Even small updates can significantly impact your home’s overall value.

Ultimately, hiring an interior designer allows you to create a unique, personalised space that reflects your lifestyle and preferences. At House of Interiors, we are dedicated to helping you achieve a home that inspires, comforts, and delights. Your home is a reflection of who you are—let us help you make it the best it can be.

FLORAL FANCY

From the soothing embrace of a wildflower meadow to the enchanting radiance of a rare flower, our handcurated collection of floral favourites captures the essence of a season and the comfort of a feeling.

Our Garden Collection brings the outdoors indoors with four exclusively designed beds, each showcasing fresh florals and available with or without accompanying soft furnishings.

Windsor Garden Floral Bed: Enjoy an elegant damask-like pattern of roses, lilies and cornflowers together with ornate scrolls. Complete the set with a matching ottoman and bedroom cushions.

Pavilion Garden Stripe Bed: A wide-weave stripe of calming sage green and romantic petal pink brings summer garden party colours into your bedroom: think rose petals, mint leaves, cucumber, and strawberries. The stripes colours within this bed perfectly complement the Windsor Garden collection to create a contemporary pattern matching experience.

Tumbling Roses Linen Bed: This linen blend depicts cascading roses in shades of sage and jade, the colour tones likened to the leaves of the Lamb’s Ear plant. A pale sage velvet piping

perfectly complements the colour tones in the biophilic upholstery.

Tournier Garden Bed: This floral linen depicts bunches of spring flowers in bright, uplifting tones of ivory and green. Dream of lazy summer afternoon walks in green fields, awash with summer life and corsage-like blooms. Pick out the subtle pops of colour with cushions and bedspreads for a more maximalist aesthetic.

“Florals and their accompanying tones are the epitome of femininity – the ground on which French Bedroom was built upon. When designing each piece of the Garden Collection, my product team and I wanted to perfectly capture the beauty of nature, while carefully considering how each piece would age timelessly within the home – gone is the misconception that florals will age a space.”

– Georgia Metcalfe, Founder & Creative Director, French Bedroom.
