SURREY HILLS EQUICULTURE WORKSHOPS
16 - 17 August 2024, 9:30 am – 3:30 pm
The Surrey Hills National Landscape and Surrey Wildlife Trust are delighted to invite horse owners to attend an Equiculture workshop led by Stuart Myers. These workshops are for horse owners that are located in and around the Surrey Hills National Landscape.

species in order to reduce the feed bill, whilst maintaining good ground cover, reducing erosion and run off into waterways, reducing the worm (parasite) burden of horses and controlling weeds.
Horse owners who attend a workshop will learn all about these important subjects and much more besides, maintaining ground cover, protecting water sources, increasing biodiversity and soil health are some of the key messages. A light lunch will be provided.
We are delivering two workshops, one based in the East of Surrey and one in the West. Please only book onto one of the workshops. surreyhills.org

New Ashgate Gallery is delighted to present “Trevor Price: Printed Perspectives,” a captivating solo exhibition by the distinguished printmaker Trevor Price. Known for his finely detailed drypoint and engraved relief prints, as well as his impressive large-scale woodcuts, Price continues to push the boundaries of printmaking.
Trevor Price’s recent works showcase his dedication to the art of handmade and handprinted pieces. His meticulous process involves carving and scraping a 2mm polycarbonate sheet with a drypoint needle and a Dremel, resulting in prints that are both intricate and emotionally resonant. Once the ink is applied to the surface, the plate is pressed with damp paper, creating prints that invite viewers to lose themselves in detailed mark-making and abstract forms. From a distance, his prints resemble sepia-toned photographs, but up close, they reveal captivating

abstractions and intricate details. Some pieces are enhanced with stained paper, evoking a sense of antiquity and nostalgia.

experience through the evocative medium of hand-built ceramics. Su Jameson’s collection invites viewers on a profound journey, exploring narratives both unique and universal, portrayed through meticulously crafted sculptures and vessels.
Su Jameson’s creative process is a dialogue between materials and emotion, where each ceramic form embodies layers of meaning and texture. Using stoneware clays such as porcelain, black, and crank, Jameson employs slab and direct modelling techniques to create pieces that resonate with raw authenticity. Marks and textures are meticulously impressed upon the clay, fostering physical and emotional exchanges that invite contemplation and personal interpretation.
About Su Jameson
Based in Liphook, Su Jameson is known for her one-off hand-built ceramic sculptures, primarily figurative in form. Her work is deeply personal yet universally resonant, aiming to provoke thought and encourage reinterpretation. How to wear white this season
If Wimbledon had you wondering how to style an all white outfit – here are five ways to pull off the look. By Lara Owen
A canvas to make a statement
If you’re wanting to break up the white, using it as your base tone is the best way forward, creating a statement with an understated canvas. Paige Lorenze, girlfriend of American tennis player Tommy Paul, used this style trick with a strapless polka-dot dress for Wimbledon’s first round. Pinstripes and polka-dots are classic prints often by the Princess of Wales, to add interest to an outfit without standing out. Kate used this tactic on her first Wimbledon appearance in 2011 in a Temperley London tiered dress, with pleats evoking posh pinstripes and the dresses on the court.
Waistcoat and wide-legged whites
The waistcoat renaissance has certainly been a welcome one – and doesn’t look to be disappearing any time soon. Perfect for all occasions, a polished waistcoat-and-trousers co-ord offers a cool alternative to a dress for any events this summer. Stars including Sofia Richie Grainge has sported the all-white waistcoat look in linen recently, whilst model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley has kept it smart with a tailored cotton trouser. Paired with heels and a smart clutch, or flat sandals and sunnies – the clean lines of a tailored white waistcoat offers a laid-back look every time.
All white everything
If you’re feeling bold – and particularly accidentresistant – opting for an all white look from headto-toe is an elegant and eye-catching way to style monochrome. Opera singer, Katherine Jenkins, indulged in an all-white draped dress with a white belt and bag for Wimbledon this year, and its simplicity let the tailoring do the talking. Styling with contradicting fabrics, such as silk and leather, can help add detail to the look without busying the ensemble.
The
suit
An obvious option for a smart and slick alternative to the formal midi dress is the suit. An all white suit manages to emanate an easy-breezy, preppy feel, without seeming too severe – and the trick is all in the ivory. Actress Rachel Weisz sported an all white suit to watch Wimbledon last year with her husband, Daniel Craig. Mixing in different shades generated a soft insouciance to the outfit, and added a feminine flair to the structured ensemble.
The strappy sundress
When crafting an all-white look, it’s best to go back to the basics – and there is nothing more foundational in a capsule wardrobe than a plain but perfect white sundress. Whether you prefer frills and lace trims à la Pippa Middleton, or something more timelessly simple – a well fitting white dress is an outfit you can rely on. Paired with detailed sandals, classic tortoiseshell sunnies and a statement bag – this white dress formula is one everyone can get behind.

FIT TO FLY: GP shares advice for staying healthy in the air
Your out of office is on, your bags are packed and you’re ready for a well earned holiday! The last thing you want is to arrive at your destination feeling groggy and sick.
The flight is all part of the adventure, but can take its toll on the body – from an increased risk of catching air-borne diseases to Deep Vein Thrombosis. To help passengers stay healthy at 30,000 feet, Dr Hagar El-Habti, a GP at King Edward VII’s Hospital highlights possible flight risks and how to mitigate them, including diet tips, yawning and swapping contacts for glasses.
1. Practice mindfulness
Some people can suffer with quite intense
anxiety before and during a flight, also known as aerophobia. This can be due to fear of heights, being in an enclosed space or fear of accidents. Practice mindful activities such as listening to your favourite podcast or reading a book which can help take your mind of the fear. If you find your anxiety is impacting on your day-to-day life, you may need to discuss further options with your doctor, and which can vary from therapy to antianxiety medicines.
2. Yawn during take-off and landing
During take-off and landing, the air pressure inside the cabin changes dramatically, and the pressure in your inner ear tries to quickly re-calibrate to match this. Sometimes this will be signalled by your ears

popping. To help avoid this, try swallowing or yawning as you take off and land. This will open the eustachian tube in your inner ear – which controls pressure – and should makes the process less uncomfortable.
3. Eat light before you fly
Similarly, the change in air pressure can have a gastrointestinal effect, whereby you become more bloated or feel pressure in your stomach. Try and plan ahead before you fly and avoid having too big a meal before you take off, eating small meals whilst on board, and steer clear of pulses or legumes known to cause gas.
4. Stay hydrated and swap contact lenses for glasses
Aeroplane cabins have very low humidity levels meaning there isn’t much moisture in the air that you’re breathing. This can lead to your throat, eyes and nose feeling dry and itchy. To combat this, make sure you take a refillable water bottle and fill it up after you go through security. If you usually wear contact lenses, swap for glasses, to prevent further discomfort to your eyes, and consider taking nasal drops on-board.
5. Wear compression stockings
Immobility increases the risk of feet swelling due to blood pooling in your legs, as the lack of activity mean blood circulation slows. Depending on the duration of your flight and co-morbidities some people may be at increased risk. To help minimise the risk of this, keep moving the legs and feet regularly, get up and walk around a bit and wear compression stockings that can be purchased from most pharmacies.
6. Stretch your legs
Lack of movement, and not having enough leg room to stretch, can increase the likelihood of developing a DVT. This occurs when being immobile leads to a lack of blood flow in the veins

– usually in the legs – which can cause potentially life-threatening clotting. It’s important to try and get up and stretch your legs, even if it’s just walking from one end of the aisle to the other. You could also opt for a seat with extra leg room –particularly if you’re in the group at increased risk of DVT i.e., those who have recently had surgery, are pregnant, obese or have cancer – as this will allow you to do simple leg stretches and keep the circulation flowing. Also, ensuring you are well hydrated will help prevent the risk of a DVT as well and wearing compression stockings.
The dos and don’ts of fake tanning in rainy summer weather
Warm and wet weather doesn’t go hand-in-hand with applying fake tan. So, experts reveal the toolkit you need to achieve bronzed skin without the sun. By Lara Owen
If you’re not heading to sunny Europe this summer, you may need a boost from a trusty bottle to evoke a glowing tan. But Britain’s quintessentially soggy season means the ordeal of full-body tanning is even tricker than usual in the muggy weather.
Whether you’re a novice or seasoned faketanner, you can improve your routine for a rich and radiant look. So, we’ve consulted tanning experts to reveal their tricks of the trade for the perfect home tan.
Create the best environment inside
“The main thing to keep in mind when applying fake tan when the weather is hot is to try to keep the skin as cool as possible,” notes Beauty Pie’s editorial director and in-house beauty expert, Nicola Moulton. “When the skin is hot, it naturally tries to cool the body down, resulting in sweating, which in turn prevents the skin from absorbing anything, especially something as light as a tan solution.”
So waiting at least a couple of hours after a hot shower is imperative, and opt for a quick-drying formula. Solutions that are light, such as a mousse as opposed to a lotion, will lessen the feeling of suffocation on the skin. “Formulas with hydrating ingredients, like hyaluronic acid and peptides will dry down into the skin, and you will wake up with
a lit-from-within glow,” says Moulton.
Just like selecting a foundation or concealer –deciding which shade of tan to go for alongside the formula is imperative to a fabulous finish. If you have pink undertones, go for a tan that has a more golden guide colour, if you have cooler undertones, go for a tan that has a green guide colour to avoid washing you out. The Bare by Vogue Williams line has a whole ‘shop by shade’ approach, which is helpful for newbies.
Prepping and application
In hot and wet weather your skin will have produced even more oils than usual. Just as we prep our face before make-up, we need to prep our skin before tanning. For best results, exfoliate your whole body so that the tan will blend in and absorb more evenly.
While prepping your skin for tanning is imperative, the process truly begins with getting the application right, and this means taking your time. “Take it section by section, starting from the legs upwards. Use sweeping motions to ensure a seamless finish and leave hands, feet and face until last,” advises Charlene Flanagan, make-up artist and co-

Applying an oil-free barrier cream to particularly dry areas, such as knees, ankles and knuckles will prevent streaks and patchiness. As opposed to adding new product to the mitt, using what’s leftover from your body application to sweep across your wrists, hands, ankles and feet means you won’t have darker patches.
If you feel you’ve made a mistake, don’t panic. Even the most seasoned self-tanners miss spots from time to time. “If you notice streaks or uneven patches, don’t worry, you can just reapply a gradual lotion onto these areas and you’ll see a blend within four to six hours” says Flanagan.
How to avoid streaks in the wet weather
The most important thing to have in your tanning canon – potentially more so than the tan itself – are tools. “To avoid streaks and orange palms, invest in a top-quality tanning mitt,” says Flanagan. “This ensures a smooth and even application, while also preventing unwanted staining.” Avoiding any chances to introduce humidity into the mix is essential. While carrying waterproofs is advised, Moulton suggests to avoid showering right before you tan and make the most of the coolest time of day, such as early mornings or evenings.
Top tip for fake tanning when it’s hot and muggy
One thing that particularly applies to hotweather tanning is the age-old adage to never wear tight clothes immediately after. “Tight clothing can rub against freshly applied fake tan and cause streaking or smudging,” says Flanagan. “Opt for loose, breathable clothing until your tan has fully dried and developed. Wear loose-fitting clothes that cover your skin to protect the tan from getting wet,” notes Moulton, “and carry an umbrella!”
To avoid at all costs…
When we’re in a rush, it can be tempting to load on the product, which results
a sweaty and streaky
“Never try to apply your fake tan with a DIY application (e.g. socks, cloths) or your hands,” says Moulton, “and don’t try loading fake tan on your face with the same volume as your body.” Instead, try a face-friendly tanning mist or liquid. “This formula is ultra-fine to ensure no product gets stuck in fine lines or dry patches,” says Moulton. Opting for one with brightening niacinamide will help care for your skin as well as giving a sunkissed glow.
Flanagan emphasises the importance of prepping. “Rushing through the preparation process can result in a patchy or uneven tan. Take the time to exfoliate, moisturise and remove any unwanted hair before applying fake tan for best results.”

The sun is out! Here is the best headwear to celebrate summer – even if you’re not a hat person…
By Lara Owen
Awallet. Crochet raffia is a good option to survive being stuffed in a suitcase.
On-trend bucket
s well as a good layer of SPF, a cool hat is an essential to top off your summer look. Wide-brimmed hats have recently made waves on the runway, and as the weather warms up, it’s important to add stylish protection.
From flopping-lampshade styles to the nonchalant baseball cap – these are the on-trend styles to accessorise your beach-day or weekend-away.
Cool crochet
It feels like crochet makes a comeback every year. Ideal for layering, crochet makes a statement beyond your clothes, and having been big for bags last year – 2024 is all about the crochet cap. Coming in the form of a knitted cap, bucket or even visor – crochet is certainly one of the cutest hat trends this summer.
Statement straw
Raffia and floppy hats have become the headgear of the summer, making any look go from English garden to Saint-Tropez style. Unfortunately, not all of these types of hats are made for our cramped carry-ons. Opting for soft-structure over stiff fabric is best – not to mention it’s kinder to your
Easy to bundle up and pop in your bag as you’re flying out the door – the bucket hat is the ultimate Gen Z summer accessory. From statement prints to humble pastels, the on-trend bucket is an intergenerational staple whether you’re at Glastonbury or in your garden.
Reliable baseball
The true style that will always work is undoubtedly the baseball cap. Possibly the least glamorous of the styles – the baseball cap has a cool insouciance to it. When styled right, it can give nautical chic vibes, or look like you’re a humble millionaire trying to discreetly run errands. Either way, a simple colourway can often edge up the most classic of looks – or at least hide you from accidental bump-ins.
Hot florals
Floral season came back with gusto earlier this year, with celebrities from musician Myleene Klass to presenter Alex Jones showcasing their best floral gowns at the Chelsea Flower Show. However, if you’d rather accent your look as opposed to going full-force with a frock, a statement hat is the way forward – adding a feminine and quaint country touch to any outfit.

How to modernise the country club look
Whenever the term “country club” is mentioned, retro visions of cable-knit cardigans and navy-cream palettes spring to mind à la Ralph Lauren and Tommy Hilfiger. However, this summer, designers have taken to revamp the preppy look with clashing colours, micro minis and androgynous silhouettes.
Where does country-club chic come from?
The more commonly known “preppy style” was popularised back in the late Nineties and early Noughties by teen hits such as Clueless and CW’s Gossip Girl. Defined by pleats, polos and an academic polish; the “preppy” aesthetic derives from the “prep” schools that served the wealthy children of North America’s elites.
The heyday of preppy fashion coincided with the rise of the excess in Eighties fashion, and was cemented by Lisa Birnbach’s The Official Preppy Handbook, which was a tongue-in-cheek examination of both the garments and lifestyle

that defined the country club set.
Since it’s inception, the preppy aesthetic has taken many forms: from Princess Diana’s off-duty gym wear to Alexa Chung’s eponymous label, and to Bella Hadid in Gucci today.
Depop’s in-house trend specialist, Agustina Panzoni, identified ‘Eclectic Prep’ as a key fashion theme for SS24, noting that “This trend mixes and matches streetwear imprints with classic brands. With searches for ‘preppy’ up 730% since January,

shoppers are also looking for boat shoes (up 296%) and loafers (up 326%), with top brands to shop including Lacoste and Dior.”
One thing is definite: country-club flair has taken on a new form as Gen Z style the trend with messy hair and chunky urban accessories for an effortlessly chic look.
THE POLO
Little introduction is needed for this summer staple. The preppy polo is back with a vengeance and is incredibly versatile. Coming in the form of oversized rugby shirts and tight-Nineties minis, the polo made it’s debut during fashion week on the spring/summer runways of Miu Miu, Gucci and Diesel.
Plain polos can be an easy alternative to your classic crew neck, while striped shirts can be dressed up with a tailored blazer or edged down with distressed denim.
Mark Hogarth, Harris Tweed ambassador and luxury style commentator, notes, “As with any fashion movement or trend there are parameters, but you can input personal style within these boundaries,” something the Italians call ‘sprezzatura’, “this is loosely translated as a studied carelessness.” This nonchalant attitude lends itself perfectly to the re-appropriation of the polo.
PLEATED TENNIS CHIC
With Zendaya’s highly celebrated tennis-turnromance film, Challengers, hitting screens earlier this year, excitement for crisp whites and preppy pleats has ignited.
Country-club chic combines elements of quiet luxury, but builds on it with sporting motifs, as Panzoni notes, the trend “blends Sportscore’s comfort with the sophistication of old prep, creating a sense of effortless elegance reminiscent of classic sportswear.”
Retro athletic attire has been a welcome trend for a while now, but emerging brands like Alo Yoga and Varley have taken the tennis dress in a trendier direction than we’ve seen before. Elegant pleats paired with a sporty sneaker or oversized jacket is a sure way to modernise the classic tennis attire.
CHUNKY LOAFERS
Mary Jane shoes have dominated autumn and spring street style – but late summer
is beckoning in the chunky loafer. A quintessential country-club fad, the loafer has become a Gen Z staple thanks to Gucci’s bulky reinvention at Milan Fashion Week, sported by guests including model, Bella Hadid.
Many traditional brands have used this resurgence as an opportunity for a modern rebrand. “G.H. Bass could claim to be the quintessential for a chunky loafer,” notes Hogarth, “but Clarks are among the many other brands worth a look.”
HERITAGE PRINTS: MODERN CUTS
A welcome twist to the aesthetic is taking classic styles and incorporating modern cuts. Heritage tweed often evokes thoughts of your grandpa’s suit jacket, but thanks to runways showcasing heritage prints with sparkle-threaded embellishments, this is no longer the case.
“The general rule would be to have a plain tweed jacket, or even a suit, and accessorise with brighter colours – scarf, socks, and tie,” says Hogarth. “Tartan is a bit more difficult as a bright pattern will dominate any look.” Hogarth suggests taking one colour out of the multi-toned print and leading with that as the palette for your outfit to avoid a look becoming too busy. Taking a slouchy tartan blazer or a mini tweed skirt is the perfect way to bring old-age fabrics into 2024.
COQUET WITH COLOUR
The biggest giveaway of any country club look is in its colour palette. Usually showcased through navy, creams and tans, this year is all about adding colour to the classic Sloane Ranger ensemble.
Going bold with prints, hues and accessories is the crème de la crème when it comes to modernising country-club chic. Elevating preppy staples with contrasting colours and finishing the look with a messy undone hair-do is the ultimate way to bring preppy into 2024.

Summer of Interiors: 2024
“Whispering Luxury focuses on high-quality, designer icons that are crafted to last a lifetime”
With summer reaching its peak, our minds are turning turn to thoughts of out-of-office messages, feeling some sun on our faces, and finally finding time to wind down.
Focus lands on our indoor and outdoor spaces and how we can indulge in, or escape, the heat.
As the world of interior design continues to evolve and progress, the term ‘trend’ gets thrown around a lot. While we’re not focused on fleeting TikTok-esque crazes with cryptic names, it’s evident that the design zeitgeist and the broader cultural atmosphere, coupled with our individual style and personal history, does gently influence our design choices. These elements serve as our creative compass, empowering us to authentically express ourselves in our homes, and make living that bit more delightful.
For 2024 so-far, the general theme has been... no theme. As recent design shows Salone del Mobile and 3daysofdesign disappear into the distance, new shapes, sizes, colours, tones, textures and materials are ripe for the picking. Colours are fusing in new and
interesting ways, contours are getting more audacious, influences range the plain to the pioneering, and furniture is helping us to all connect.
Dive into our summer interiors report 2024, where there’s something for everyone, the rulebook is relaxed and it’s all about doing what makes you feel good and showing who you are. So, what’ll it be?
WHISPERING LUXE:
Whispering Luxury focuses on high-quality, designer icons that are crafted to last a lifetime, and rooms should still be places that feel beautiful but not overdone, while we’re adding in the occasional statement object, conversationprompting pieces of design to show off our personality and taste in a way that elevates the everyday, as well as being elegant.
It zooms in on excellence, timelessness, refinement, and careful selection, but with a dash of fun and personality mixed in. More characterful, less austere. A way to live with both chic-ness and joy.
COLOSSAL CURVES:
We’re still stuck on curves – and we’re not sorry. They’re just more soul-enriching and soothing than harsh and sharp am-I-going-to-bump-myself-onthat angles and lines.
Over the past few seasons, we’ve seen curves move through the home, first on upholstered pieces then in accessories and smaller items until the curved hard furniture movement came last year. As our homes get ever comfier and more comforting, curves have become bigger, bolder, braver and better than before. And it feels good.
This all goes hand-in-hand with the contemporary penchant for ‘seating systems,’ seats and sofas that extend and lengthen to create multi-person seating islands which provide endless seating arrangement options in a litany of shapes.
SURPRISING SHADES:
It works, it really does, the pop of that-doesn’tmatch brightness smiling out from a space putting a grin on faces too. Moving forward, we’re liberating, loosening up and getting ready to experiment. It’s time for ‘Unexpected Colour’ to enter the home, a zing of vividity where there’s no business being one. Be it lemon yellow, sage green or glowing magenta, the only rule is that the pigment should stand out and draw the eye.
Let’s break free from the design constraints, and dictate ourselves the colours that will take the spotlight from room to room. Showcasing a single splash of standout colour or a restrained few pieces of pigment in a space is – there’s no other word for it – fun.
TALKING POINTS:
The time of the TV as the entertainment centre du jour is over – so why should all of our furniture angle towards it? Let’s shake off that convention and make rooms more about people again, about talking and contemplating. About hosting and games and drinks and snacks and generally connecting. Try to put that phone down for a moment. Sounds good doesn’t it?
Decorating-wise, it’s really quite simple. Some kind of vague circle formation is key, do bear in mind the other beautiful things to enjoy – window views or artworks or fireplaces – but seating should be primarily focused on the most important thing in the room: other people.
PAPER FOLDS:
Paper-inspired forms are seeing a rise in 2D-esque experimental approaches to furniture construction, from Ron Arad’s sculptural One Page chair and footstool for Moroso which was conceived when considering the curves of a single piece of paper, to Tiziano Guardini and Luigi Ciuffreda’s Narinari chair for B&B Italia: back and seat seemingly folding together origami-like. Meanwhile Lema’s Blanca armchair by Roberto Lazzeroni appears to be composed of shapely cut out pieces, leaving a gaping recess in the back, while Gallotti & Radice’s H2O chair by Studiopepe is decorated with a circle cut out from its backrest, and the brand’s Selce-T table – also by Studiopepe –comprises of cut-and-stick-style fragmented shapes. chaplins.co.uk

DISCOVER TROPICANDI STYLE
When it’s sunny, even your décor wants to shine. Get to know more about Tropicandi - a hybrid trend that combines the dreamy Palm Springs colour palette with a touch of Scandinavian cool.
Amthal Karim, Head of Design at Furniture And Choice comments:
“Tropicandi celebrates the best of summer with its bold and cheerful style. Bringing together tropical décor and Scandinavian style may seem surprising initially but they have more similarities than you think! For one thing, they both bring touches of the outdoors inside through their décor.
Tropicandi takes a lot of inspiration from Palm Springs design. Think airy open plan living with retro-inspired pieces and splashes of colour. Combine that with Scandi’s sleek, minimal style and you get a cheerful summer vibe that’s fresh, chic and utterly Instagrammable.
The Tropicandi colour palette has to include peach - after all, what’s Palm Springs style without peach and sky blue? Sage green and light pink are also colours originally part of the popular design trend so channel that retro aesthetic by introducing dreamy California tones. The key element is to make the most of your natural lighting. The sunshine streaming into your home is the magic ingredient to make it feel like you’re chilling at a celeb pad in LA.
Neutral touches are also essential in creating this look. Taking inspiration from the Palm Springs desert, earthy tones are the way to go as well as crisp whites to evoke the clear sky. Bringing in splashes of pastel colours will also accentuate the retro motel aesthetic - think flamingo pink or teal tints for that fresh and funky pop of colour.
What else makes Tropicandi stand out? It’s the subtle glamour thanks to its Palm Springs influence. Accessories go hand in hand with making this colour palette stand out. Pay homage
to its retro roots by giving pastels more vibrance and meaning. Pick soft furnishings with patterns like a cushion with stripes or a colourful throw to match the summery look. It’s also not Tropicandi without palm trees and sunshine so if you have any photos of your holiday snaps lying around it’s a good idea to frame up and display them.
“Tropicandi also brings together tropical and Scandi decor’s shared love of natural materials”
Tropicandi also brings together tropical and Scandi decor’s shared love of natural materials. Wood plays an important part in bringing this trend to life through furniture, flooring or accessories. A wooden dining set or coffee table helps highlight both tropical style and Scandi elements thanks to their relaxing texture. There’s also no such thing as too many plants for this trend! The California aesthetic doesn’t stop here with palms and monsteras. Hanging plants like pothos or ivy also fit right in and complete the tropical touches.” furniturechoice.co.uk

DESIGNER STYLE: Understanding the Japandi trend
It’s easy to fall in love with Japandi interiors - they’re calming, minimalist and with purpose. With its close connection to nature, Japandi isn’t just about chic aesthetics but feeling at peace in your home. Amthal Karim, Head of Design at Furniture And Choice comments on how to style this trend like a designer.
“Even though Japandi interiors may seem like the cool kid on the design block, it’s far from intimidating. It takes the most meaningful elements of Wabi Sabi philosophy and Scandinavian hygge to create a style that centres on comfort and tranquillity.
Japandi’s strength lies in its simplicity. Its Scandi roots emphasise curating your décor while the Wabi Sabi connection values beauty in imperfection. This means that even though you have a minimalist interior that feels refined, there is a rustic element that makes the space feel livedin and cosy instead of cold and uninviting.
So what’s the best way to start? Decluttering your home is essential in bringing Japandi’s minimalist aesthetic to life. This is what makes Japandi interiors look so stylish without having to blow your budget. Putting purpose first when choosing furniture and accessories will help set the mood of your space. For example, choose a sofa or armchair with clean lines or soft curves to bring out Japandi’s sleek yet simple feel. Tie this together with soft upholstery like cotton, linen or boucle to amp up the cosiness.
A neutral colour palette is essential in creating
the Japandi look. Textured wallpaper in a neutral hue is one way to bring this element to life. If you prefer a light base for sofas go for cream, taupe, beige, oatmeal, ivory and light brown. You can also go darker with browns, stone shades and greys to make a more moody statement. However, it’s best to avoid ‘loud’ colours like red or orange to keep it understated.
It’s no secret that traditional Japanese interiors exude a sense of peace and calm. This is because of its link to biophilic design where you bring the outdoors in through interiors - and Japandi is no different. One easy way is to incorporate wooden accents throughout your home like a coffee table,
“Besides wood, textures like stone tiling or linen upholstery also help create a tranquil space and ground us in the present”
chairs or even a bowl. Besides wood, textures like stone tiling or linen upholstery also help create a tranquil space and ground us in the present.
When we talk about layering in Japandi design, this is where Wabi Sabi comes into play. It’s a lifestyle philosophy that celebrates the unique or handmade so bring in personal touches through soft furnishings, artwork or accessories. If you have pieces that have been passed down like old ceramics or trinkets from your travels, display them proudly. If you’re in the mood to shop, there’s always the thrill of browsing vintage markets and finding a piece (or three) with a piece of history attached to it.
The best kept secret about giving Japandi a designer look is in the lighting. Get the ‘Japandi glow’ with round paper lantern lights or lamps which fit right in with the room’s clean, minimal aesthetic. Pendant lighting is also a good way to highlight specific areas of your home like your kitchen-diner or reading corner. Besides ceiling lights, table lamps are another option for brightening your interior giving you the flexibility to move the lamps around. Basically, you want to bring warmth and cosiness to your interiors to make it feel like you never want to leave home!” furniturechoice.co.uk

Transform your fireplace area for autumn with designer tiles
It hasn’t exactly been a scorching summer so far, but if you’ve managed to refrain from turning your heating back on, now is the perfect time to jazz up your fireplace area with some super-stylish tiles. On our latest blog, we offer expert advice on how to choose your materials, highlight the latest tile styles available, explain how size, shape and pattern can impact the results you achieve – and even suggest some outdoor firepit patio designs. We also showcase interior design student Charlotte’s fireplace renovation in her home, featuring our Memphis Porcelain Coral tiles.
Our director Richard Skeoch explains: “New tiles are a fabulous way to transform your fireplace surround and create a stand-out focal point in your living room. They can be used on the chimney breast, in the alcove, around the grate, and in the hearth. But first and foremost, you’ll need to take into account some practical considerations. If your fireplace is functional, you must make sure that the tiles you choose can withstand the high temperatures your fireplace can reach.”
Richard’s top tips for choosing the best fireplace tiles include:
• Choose your material wisely. Fireplace tiles need to be durable and heat-resistant. They also need to be easy to clean! Porcelain and ceramic tiles are popular picks, in addition to natural stones such as
“New tiles are a fabulous way to transform your fireplace surround and create a stand-out focal point in your living room”
marble and granite.
• Evaluate your room’s style. Is the interiors setting modern or traditional? That’s not to say you can’t mix and match – a subtle clash of styles can look fantastic. But bear in mind you don’t want the finished effect to be jarring, or to look completely out of place.
• Assess size and shape. It sounds obvious, but the size and shape of your fireplace should also guide your fireplace tile selection. Consider which areas you will actually be tiling – there’s a big difference between a wall-to-chimney ceiling breast and a compact hearth surround.
• Pick the right pattern. Fireplace tiles don’t have to be plain. Patterns work well in both modern and traditional settings, adding contrast and visual interest.
We have new and existing comprehensive patterned tile collections, with more than 15,000 bespoke floor and wall tiles in a variety of patterns, colours, shapes and sizes. We also offer a dedicated collection of luxury wallcoverings, distinctive bathroom pieces, from mesmerising mirrors to stylish storage, and paint. Our highly skilled team is available to offer expert advice, such as technical know-how and in-depth product knowledge to homeowners, designers, specifiers and architects. hyperiontiles.co.uk
