The Ascot Classic Car Auction Historics’ hosts showcase sale on Saturday 2nd March

espite electric cars occupying the motoring headlines, the popularity of owning and driving a yesteryear classic continues to grow. Over 1.5 million ‘historic’ vehicles were UK-road registered in 2021, up nearly 50% on the number in 2015. An evocative insight on the phenomenon comes by way of a major live, open-to-public sale of 180 hugely varied classic cars at Ascot Racecourse on Saturday 2nd March, hosted by the renowned classic and collector car auction specialists, Historics. Mark Perkins, co-founder of Historics in 2010, commented: “The auction is a great opportunity to immerse yourself in a touch of evocative and colourful motoring culture. The fascination of owning a classic car for leisure time enjoyment is mirrored at the sale by a terrific variety of cars, from very affordable to hugely collectible. Everyone is very welcome, whether bidding or not.” The Historics sale most certainly reflects a real cornucopia of classic cars, brimful of character and interest. Well over thirty different marques are represented within the regal setting of Ascot Racecourse. There are fine examples from well-known marques such as Aston Martin, Austin Healey, MG, Triumph, Jaguar, Porsche and Ferrari. In contrast, classics abound from less familiar brands including Borgward, Riley, Singer and even an Eastern bloc rendition of a ubiquitous jeep by the name of UAZ, brought from the McAlpine Estate collection. One of the many star entries is most certainly an exquisite example of the successor to the famed Aston Martin DB5, a 1968 DBS – best known as George Lazenby’s Bond car in “Her Majesty’s Secret Service”. This example has superb and unique provenance, fitted with a prototype of the V8 engine that powered this model.

1973 Lamborghini Espada S3 restoration project

Equally high on the rarity stakes is a steroidal 1973 Jensen ‘Viperceptor’. It’s a bespokelydesigned and hand-built one-off clone of UK and US performance culture - a Jensen Interceptor powered by a raucous 8.3 litre V10 Viper engine of the famed American Dodge Viper street sleuth. But this fascinating sale is not just about highoctane classic sports cars. Interest runs deep and is fuelled by the likes of an equally-fascinating 1960’s aluminium-skinned Airstream motorhome, a charming pre-war 1938 wind in the hair two-seater MG and a holy grail, air-cooled Porsche 911 from the early 1970s. On sale too is a freedom-loving 1970s beach buggy, a tempting Lamborghini Espada restoration project and a noble selection of stately Rolls-Royce and Bentley models – including a superb 1964 Continental Drophead first owned by the Earl of Inchcape. This and much more besides awaits visitors. Three preview days prior to the sale enable you to pore over all the entries, aided by chatting to Historics’ hugely knowledgeable specialists, with the sale commencing at 9.30 on Saturday, 2nd March. THE WORLD’S GREATEST CELEBRATION OF DOGS RETURNS

O

7 – 10 March 2024, Nec Birmingham More than 20,000 dogs will be taking their paws to the greatest Dog Show in the World next month - Crufts 2024.

rganised by The Kennel Club, the iconic Show will run from Thursday and across the weekend with a four-day action-packed schedule, celebrating our four-legged friends and all things dog. The event will showcase over 200 diverse breeds and see dogs from all walks of life put their best paw forward in fast-paced and fun competitions including agility, heelwork to music, flyball and obedience. The family-favourite Scruffts final sees the nation’s pets - who earned their place in heats across the country throughout the year - compete for the ‘top dog’ title and on Sunday evening, one of five very special finalists will be crowned as the winner of The Kennel Club Hero Dog Award, as voted by the public. Shortly after, following four days of competition, one canine Crufts competitor will put their paws on the coveted Best in Show trophy, which in 2023 was awarded to Orca, the Lagotto Romagnolo, whose ‘tail never stops wagging’. Each day will conclude with one dog earning their place in the Best in Show final on Sunday evening, beginning with the Utility and Toy groups on Thursday 7 March, Gundog group on Friday 8 March, Working and Pastoral groups on Saturday 9 March and concluding with the Terrier and Hound groups on Sunday 10 March. For the 30th year, the popular Discover Dogs area will be welcoming over 200 different breeds of all shapes, sizes and personalities - enabling visitors to learn more about the variety of our four-legged friends from breed experts and see which canine might be the right companion for them. From discovering the lesser known ‘underdogs’, like the rare Otterhound, to understanding what the popular family-favourites, like the Labrador Retriever, really need in a home, Discover Dogs is a unique area of the event. Each breed ‘booth’ can help prospective puppy owners

on every step of their journey – from responsible puppy buying tips to day-to-day training and caring requirements. For those hoping to rehome a rescue dog, The Kennel Club Breed Rescue organisations will also be on hand to provide visitors with everything they need to know about rehoming. Over 500 stands selling all sorts of doggy delights will cover 25 acres of the NEC at Crufts. The event also showcases a range of dog-focussed charities and organisations, including The Kennel Club Charitable Trust, who will demonstrate how dogs can support us, and how we can support them. Many of these organisations will also showcase their work through displays, like the super sniffing Medical Detection Dogs and the brave West Midlands Police Dogs. After a successful launch of the Stand Up To Cancer Crufts Walkies Challenge in 2023, which saw dogs and their owners raise an incredible

£1.4 million, the challenge will be returning for a second year - encouraging two and four-legged friends to walk 60 miles in April to support lifesaving cancer research. The Young Kennel Club, for 6–24-year-olds, and The Kennel Club’s Good Citizen Dog Training scheme, will be running displays and demonstrations in dedicated rings throughout the four days. There is also a Dog Activities ring for those interested in learning more about getting started in activities such as agility, heelwork to music and obedience. TV viewers can soak up the atmosphere by tuning into Channel 4, More4 and All4 broadcast. The action is also live streamed on the official Crufts YouTube channel. The Deer of Richmond Park

R

ichmond Park was originally a deerhunting park, and still has 300 red deer and 350 fallow deer. When Charles I moved his court to Richmond Palace (no longer standing) to avoid the plague in London, in 1625, he turned his manor into a deer park with herds of fallow and red deer. The park was enclosed with an 8 mile long brick wall in 1637. Most of the wall that still encloses Richmond park is the original. The Royal deer have been maintained in Richmond ever since. The deer have played a major role in the Park’s history and have shaped the landscape too. Their special grassland habitat depends on grazing and the parkland trees have a distinctive ‘browse line’ as the deer eat all the leaves and twigs growing below about 1.5 metres. Deer grazing also prevents tree seedlings from growing, keeping the grassland open. For young trees to survive they need to be

protected against damage from deer antlers for some 50 years. During the autumn the deer ‘rut’ (breeding season) takes place. The red stags and fallow bucks compete for females (known as hinds and does respectively). At this time, the large males roar, bark and clash antlers in a spectacular way in an attempt to fight off rivals and to attract as many females as possible. The young are born mainly in June, and are hidden by their mothers amongst the bracken and long grass. Females and their young are very vulnerable and sensitive to disturbance at this time Herds of red and fallow deer roam freely within much of the park. The herds are culled in November to keep numbers manageable and the park population healthy. The British Deer Society and the Deer Initiative of England and Wales, who are regarded as the main welfare organizations dealing with the welfare and management of deer nationally, recognise that parkland deer numbers must be managed and that removal of some of the deer is necessary each year to keep populations at acceptable levels. The keeping of deer in enclosed English parkland has a long heritage. Although many ancient parks were originally maintained for hunting purposes, in recent times it is recognised that the deer herds of the Royal Parks in London are an integral part

BENTLEY’S HERITAGE COLLECTION THE FINAL MULSANNE ADDS A ROYAL TOUCH

B

entley Motors presents the latest prestigious addition to its rejuvenated Heritage Collection – a bespoke 2020 Mulsanne Extended Wheelbase, the final example of the Mulsanne handcrafted at Bentley’s Dream Factory in Crewe, which has now returned home after service with the Royal household. The last Mulsanne was commissioned by, and built for, Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, and includes a range of bespoke features to ensure the car was fit for royal duties. The starting point was an exterior in solid Barnato green, paired with an interior in Twine and Cumbrian hide, Burr Walnut wood veneers and deep lambswool carpets. To this, the specification added rear privacy curtains and the Royal coat of arms of the United Kingdom inlaid into the door waistrails, while the front centre armrests were removed in lieu of a custom-

sized tray to accommodate the Queen’s handbag. Discretely concealed blue police lights, a siren and a bullhorn were also installed, with a dedicated switch panel hidden beneath a walnut-veneered door behind the gear lever. Bentley’s famous 537PS 6.75-litre V8 engine, 21” alloy wheels and chrome brightware for the grille and front wing vents and the iconic Flying B complete the car, which will be retained as the third and final Mulsanne in Bentley’s Heritage Collection. It will join the second Mulsanne ever built, VIN 0002 from 2010, and a 2019 Mulsanne Speed that previously saw service on Bentley’s press fleet. The three Mulsannes are part of an expanded 45-car Collection, 2.5 years into a threeyear programme to completely rebuild a family of cars that together explain and describe Bentley’s 104-year history.

In 2016, a new Mulsanne was launched at the Geneva Motor Show, with the car further raising the standards of luxury with a redesigned interior – featuring new seats, door trims, armrests, navigation technology and a brand-new infotainment system. The front end of the car was also upgraded with new grilles, lights and a new bonnet. Alongside the new Mulsanne in 2016, Bentley also launched the Mulsanne Extended Wheelbase, with a 250 mm extension of the Mulsanne’s footprint enabling space for an ornate folding table, centre console, electronic leg-rests and privacy curtains to deliver the best-in-class luxury experience for the rear-seat passengers. Bidding farewell to the Mulsanne in 2020, the final 30 series production cars formed the unique ‘6.75 Edition by Mulliner’, with the name derived from the car’s legendary 6.75-litre engine – which also came to the end of production alongside the Mulsanne after more than 60 years. The Mulsanne was in production for over a decade, with each of the 7,300 cars handcrafted at Bentley’s factory in Crewe, England.

THE BENTLEY HERITAGE COLLECTION Bentley’s Heritage Collection now consists of 45 cars, from the oldest Bentley in the world (the 1919 3-Litre EXP2) through to the 2021 Continental GT Speed, with some of the most extraordinary Bentleys ever made representing every decade of the company’s 104-year history. 37 road registered, road legal cars describe the development of the Bentley model range over the same period, bolstered by eight of the most famous motorsport and record-breaking vehicles – including three Speed 8s, both generations of Continental GT3, and Pikes Peak and Ice Speed Record cars. All of the cars in the Heritage Collection are maintained and on display at Bentley’s carbon neutral Dream Factory in Crewe. Customers, VIPs, media guests and Bentley colleagues are all able to view the company’s history through the Collection as part of the factory tour experience. bentleymotors.com 28 FEBRUARY 2024

V&A presents the UK’s first dedicated exhibition

GABRIELLE CHANEL: Fashion Manifesto The Sainsbury Gallery, Until 25 February 2024

paved the way for a new elegance and continues to influence the way women dress today. Highlights will include one of the earliest surviving Chanel garments from 1916; original costumes designed by Chanel for the Ballets Russes production of Le Train Bleu in 1924; outfits created for Hollywood stars Lauren Bacall and Marlene Dietrich; an early example of Chanel’s ground-breaking evening trousers and ensembles from Chanel’s final collection of 1971. Chanel designed first and foremost for herself.

T

he first UK exhibition dedicated to the work of French couturière, Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel, charts the evolution of her iconic design style and the establishment of the House of CHANEL - from the opening of her first millinery boutique in Paris in 1910 to the showing of her final collection in 1971. Featuring over 200 looks seen together for the first time, as well as accessories, perfumes and jewellery, the exhibition will explore Chanel’s pioneering approach to fashion design, which

34 FEBRUARY 2024

“Towards A New Elegance offers an introduction to the beginning of Gabrielle Chanel’s career as a milliner, opening her first boutique in Paris in 1910”

By creating clothes fit for an independent and active lifestyle, she anticipated the needs and wants of the modern woman. The exhibition will explore Chanel’s innovative approach to fabric, silhouette and construction, and will examine how she drafted a new framework for fashion in the twentieth century. Showcasing a stunning array of some of Chanel’s most notable designs from her sixty years in fashion, the exhibition analyses her professional career, the emergence and the development of her style, and her contribution to the history of fashion. Through ten themed sections, Gabrielle Chanel: Fashion Manifesto will showcase the exquisite skill and innovation from the founder of the House of CHANEL: Towards A New Elegance offers an introduction to the beginning of Gabrielle Chanel’s career as a milliner, opening her first boutique in Paris in 1910. This section outlines how the success of this business enabled her expansion into clothing and will feature one of the earliest surviving Chanel garments, characterised by minimalism and precision – laying the foundations of her design principles. The Emergence of a Style focuses on how Chanel developed an immediately identifiable signature style in the 1920s and 1930s. With clean lines, fluid materials and a simplistic colour palette, her understated designs were radical in their practicality yet displayed a refined elegance. This section also includes Chanel’s British influences and business ventures, and her creations worn on the theatre stage and silver screen. The Invisible Accessory showcases the creation and impact of Gabrielle Chanel’s debut perfume No.5 which became the world’s bestselling fragrance. Chanel made No.5 the signature of her fashion house. This section will also explore the launch of Chanel’s range of make-up in 1924 and skincare in 1927. Luxury and Line focuses on how Chanel’s eveningwear demonstrated a refined mix of inventiveness and classicism which subtly accentuated the female form- harmonising proportions and materials to create garments which expressed elegance, freedom and simplicity. This section will also look at “Bijoux de Diamants”, her first and only 1932 collection of fine jewellery commissioned by the International

Diamond Corporation of London. Closing the House will outline the impact of the outbreak of war in 1939 on her personal and professional life. The exhibition will continue with Chanel’s official Return to Fashion on 5 February 1954, featuring the signature hallmarks that she had so successfully introduced during the 1920s and 1930s. The Suit will spotlight the defining garment of Gabrielle Chanel’s post-war contribution to fashion, with over fifty ensembles on display. A declaration of her vision of modern femininity, the Chanel suit combined ease and comfort with simplicity and style. Described by Vogue in 1964 as “the world’s prettiest uniform,” the Chanel suit, which has since become a timeless classic, remains a staple reference for fashion today. Chanel Codes will focus on how accessories were fundamental to Chanel’s conception of a harmonious silhouette. They reflected her pragmatic vision of fashion and provided recognisable codes which underlined the unity of her style. Since the 1950s, the Chanel 2.55 handbag and two-tone slingback shoes have become two of the most enduring accessories in the world of fashion. Into the Evening showcases eveningwear as an important part of Chanel’s couture collections in the latter part of her career. From the late 1950s onwards, she adapted her suits to include a range to be worn into the evening. These cocktail suits followed the same form as her day suits, realised in a plethora of richly decorative fabrics such as gold and silver lamés, textured weaves and intricately patterned silks. A Chanel Hallmark will explore this essential part of Gabrielle Chanel’s distinct style. Rejecting the conventions of fine jewels, Chanel gave costume jewellery a new status. From the early 1920s, Chanel’s boutiques offered a dazzling range of costume jewellery to wear with her sleek fashionable garments. Timeless Allure – the exhibition finale – celebrates the evening dress as Chanel’s exercise in style. She proposed a relaxed version of the formal dress that was both discreet and refined. This section will showcase that right up until her final collection of Spring-Summer 1971. Gabrielle Chanel reinterpreted, updated and perfected her rules and principles, continuously refining her quintessential style. FEBRUARY 2024 35

Sam’s Waterside, Brentford R

estaurateur Sam Harrison launched Sam’s Waterside in Brentford, west London, in November 2023. Located in the new Brentford Project development by Ballymore, and situated facing the water (the River Brent, a tributary of the Thames), the restaurant and bar’s glamorous interior has a certain echo of the contemporary brasserie style of the hugely successful Sam’s Riverside in Hammersmith. The menus also have a hint of the crowdpleasing repertoire from Sam’s Riverside – the immensely popular Parmesan Churros and Portland Crab on Toast appear, as well as a selection of Oysters and Shellfish – but there are many delectable seasonal options from Head Chef Jacob Keen Downs. Highlights include Crispy Duck Salad with Watercress and Persimmon; Bass Ceviche with Avocado and Chilli; Delica Pumpkin and Coconut Masala with Pomegranate and Spiced Samosa; Braised Short Rib, Parsnips and Horseradish Mash; Chargrilled Tronçon of Halibut with Crayfish Beurre Noisette; and Hereford Aged Ribeye with Peppercorn Sauce and Chips. Desserts show flair with Basque Style Cheesecake; Chiswick House Apple Pie with Vanilla Ice Cream (to share); and Sticky Rum Cake with Coconut Ice Cream. And wherever possible, Sam and his kitchen team keep it local with fruit and vegetables sourced from local gardens and charities – including

Chiswick House & Garden, and Phoenix Farm, part of the Hammersmith Community Gardens Association. Sunday lunch, always a big hit at Sam’s Riverside, sees traditional roasts added to the regular à la carte repertoire. And the great value ‘TW8 Set Menu’ is £28.50 for three courses (or £23.50 for two) and is available from Monday-Thursday lunch and early dinner (bookings 5pm-6pm) and lunch only on Friday. The Bar serves a full range of cocktails, beer and wine, and a short menu comprising Oysters; Pork and Shrimp Burger; and the hugely popular Waterside Smash Cheeseburger. The wellpriced and well-chosen wine list comprises 55 international bins (from £28 bottle). The impressive space features two sides of the building with large windows with bi-folding doors, ideal for milder weather to take advantage of an outdoor space (opening soon!). Interior design notes include blush pink and ivory leather dining seats and teal velvet banquettes, as well as large bespoke Art Deco-inspired pendant lights. Centre-stage is an island bar for eating and drinks, and the open kitchen offers a glimpse into the cooking action. A commissioned painting by renowned west London artist Tomo Campbell is an impressive and colourful additional feature. Sam Harrison is hugely proud of the new Sam’s Waterside, stating: “Staying in west London for my businesses means that we have a great many loyal customers who love what we do – and appreciate having various options for dining out. Sam’s Waterside extends our reach a bit further west, into new neighbourhoods – and we’re proud that the initial reaction to coming to Brentford has been so incredibly positive. The Brentford Project is regenerating a whole section along the riverfront – with many new flat complexes, food and retail businesses joining the area in the coming months.”

Cranleigh Drama

T

aking part in a production, whether as an actor, designer, stage manager or technician provides an unparalleled challenge which builds teamwork, creates long-lasting friendship and gives young people social confidence. It’s also extremely enjoyable and will remain one of the most memorable experiences of a student’s time at school. The confidence boost afforded by Drama, whether academic or cocurricular, will naturally positively impact academic studies. Learning lines can help with memory and recall and is invaluable for subjects such as English where learning chunks of text is a necessary skill. Drama develops the softer skills like empathy and collaboration, which are vital for students as they move from school to university and beyond. The best drama can help to raise emotional and difficult issues and encourage pupils to address them, it also encourages empathy and social tolerance. We’re supported at Cranleigh in our aim to put on challenging, meaningful plays that confront the big issues faced by students today and our productions are always exciting and contemporary. Cranleigh has a reputation for staging edgy productions that have a positive impact on other areas of school life because they give pupils a way to talk about the things they are facing, like entertaining PSHE. Last year we

staged Polly Stenham’s brutal play That Face, as well as Moana Jr – The Musical and a challenging immersive production of Neverland. Drama is a key part of school life and Cranleigh approaches performance, in all its forms, highly seriously. It’s a popular choice at GCSE, offering a way to study that’s not behind a desk. Many students also take the subject at A-Level or EPQ, when they have the ability to explore and develop ideas independently. The principal focus of all forms of Drama at Cranleigh is for pupils to enjoy performing, whilst being pushed to reach the highest standards possible. We have a flexible environment that can be used for all kinds of traditional and immersive productions, and amazing facilities including a dedicated smaller theatre and green-screen room. As a boarding school we also have ‘House Plays’ which are less high-profile productions open to anyone in the boarding house, these are also scripted and produced by pupils and they take place in our smaller theatre space so that those less confident onstage also have a chance to perform. Pupils at Cranleigh can take part by helping to stage manage productions and our Theatre Tech group learn about theatre management, from props and lighting to production. cranleigh.org

FAMILIARITY, UNDERSTANDING AND NURTURE

Parkside School, Cobham recognises that fun is the foundation of a wellrounded education and lays the foundations for a solid learning journey from Nursery to Year 8. After all, we know that happy children want to go to school and tend to thrive. Play is the common denominator throughout the EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage) and the primary form of learning at Parkside’s Nursery. Children develop language skills, their emotions and creativity, social and intellectual skills through play.

48 FEBRUARY 2024

C

hildren learn to take risks, explore new ideas, problem solve and develop their imaginations both independently and as part of a group. Adults play a crucial part in facilitating this type of learning by providing time, space and resource to have fun and learn through play. Here at Parkside School, FUN is also used as an acronym for Familiarity, Understanding and Nurture. These are the key values practised in our early years setting. The overall aim in the early years is that children have fun in a structured environment where they can grow in confidence, supported by individuals who genuinely care about their wellbeing. Having ample outdoor space is also a real bonus for children. Familiarity, Understanding and Nurture: The importance of children having a familiar environment with adults they know and trust is paramount in building their confidence and, therefore, their ability to learn. The comfort of a daily routine and set expectations within certain boundaries work to create security and contentment in their early years. When children are relaxed and know what to expect, their attentions are focused fully on learning and not on worrying about when their adult is coming to collect them.

We support the children to understand their world by creating opportunities to learn through play and structured tasks both inside and outside of the classroom. The emphasis should always be on encouraging children to take calculated risks, to take the lead independently as well as supporting and guiding them to persevere with tasks to ‘make it happen’. The two elements above should be underpinned by a focus on nurturing the children and is paramount to their development and ability to learn. A proactive pastoral care provision should sit at the heart of any learning environment to guide children successfully through their early years and to build a firm foundation for children to progress into senior school. With the current emphasis on mental health and increasing pressures on children to do well, it has never been more important to establish healthy habits early on to ensure they are supported to do their best. These three ‘FUN’ values should be instilled at the earliest opportunity. And we all know how time flies… and in the blink of an eye, they are walking through the gates of their senior school. Parkside Nursery and Reception classes are available all year round. Shortlisted for Best Independent Boys’ School for the Independent School Parent Awards 2023. Whole School Open Event: Friday 8 March 2024. To enquire, email admissions@parkside-school.co.uk or call 01932 862749.

your child’s future A

A guide to School Open Days

s we approach the new term, it is now when thoughts turn to Independent School Open Days - allowing you to get a genuine feel for the school and whether on first impressions it is right for your child.

TOP TIPS FOR GETTING THE MOST OUT OF A SCHOOL OPEN DAY… • Check on the school website if you need to make an appointment prior to visiting • It is vital that you are prepared so read their school brochures thoroughly • Take your child with you – their opinion is the most important. Children will get an idea whether they feel comfortable there. • Talk to as many people as you can: pupils, teachers and the headmaster ideally • Take an independent walk around with your child and chat about any reservations you might both have.

QUESTIONS TO ASK AT A SCHOOL OPEN DAY…. Some questions will differ according to your child’s age and whether you are visiting a day or boarding school. • How selective is the school academically and what is the current pass rate for the common entrance exam? • Are there high expectations and high academic achievements? • Is the curriculum broad and well balanced? (you want your child to be successful but not too 50 FEBRUARY 2024

compelled in pressure) • What are the classroom sizes? • What is expected of my child with regard to homework? • Is there a healthy balance of fun and academia? • Is there a bullying policy? • What lunchtime meals are available? • What sports and music facilities are available? • What after school clubs and trips are available? • How many pupils branch out into further education? After the tour, you may have the opportunity to meet other parents and children on a more informal footing whereby the teachers and the head can answer queries over coffee and biscuits.

PRIVATELY EDUCATED PEOPLE DOMINATE TOP BRITISH JOBS

The study, by the Sutton Trust education charity, shows that virtually every key profession is dominated by privately educated pupils grabbing the senior management/director positions

T

heir grip on power is most noticeable in the judiciary, where 74 per cent of leading judges (those in the High Court or Court of Appeal) were privately educated. Figures in the report also show that one in three MPs (32 per cent) was privately educated – as were half the members of the Conservative Cabinet. Even in Jeremy Corbyn’s Shadow Cabinet, 13 per cent of members went to private school. Nationally, the figure is just 7 per cent. The report, carried out by Dr Philip Kirby, goes on to show that 71 per cent of senior Army officers – two-star generals and above – went to private schools. Only 12 per cent attended comprehensives.

“The higher echelons of journalism are also dominated by the private sector, with 51 per cent educated in independent schools”

In medicine, 61 per cent of doctors were privately educated while 22 per cent went to selective state grammar schools and just 16 per cent to comprehensives. The list goes on – 48 per cent of civil servants were educated privately, 29 per cent went to selective grammar schools and 23 per cent to comprehensives. The higher echelons of journalism are also dominated by the private sector, with 51 per cent educated in independent schools. And of those chief executives of FTSE 100 companies who were educated in the UK, 34 per cent were privately educated. Nearly half the top actors – 42 per cent of Bafta Award winners – went to private schools, fuelling criticism that the profession is becoming more elitist. “Our research shows that your chances of reaching the top in so many areas of British life are so much better if you went to an independent school,” said Sir Peter Lampl, the chairman of the Sutton Trust. “As well as academic achievement, an independent education tends to develop the essential skills such as confidence, articulacy and teamwork, which are vital to career success.

Hurst College Commemorates the Holocaust

A

s part of a series of Holocaust Commemoration events this week, Hurst welcomed two Holocaust survivors—Marcel Ladenheim BEM and Dorit Oliver-Wolff BEM—to share their stories with the College community. Interviewed by broadcaster Natasha Kaplinsky OBE, herself a member of the Prime Minister’s Holocaust Commission, Marcel told of the harrowing experiences his family suffered at the hands of the Nazi regime. Having fled to France following the Anschluss in 1938, Marcel’s parents hoped to find refuge in Paris, yet the capital soon fell to Nazi Occupation in 1940. Over the course of the war, Marcel’s father was sent to Auschwitz, never to return, and his heavily pregnant mother suffered a severe nervous breakdown, for which she was hospitalized. Marcel was thus forced to fend for himself, and was fortunate enough to be taken in by two brave sisters: Olga and Esther Masoli. He would only be reunited with his brother at the end of the war, when the pair moved to Manchester to live with their aunt and uncle. The following evening, Dorit shared the story of her equally troubling experiences of WWII. She remembers her childhood years with great 54 FEBRUARY 2024

clarity; nights spent risking discovery in air-raid shelters, escaping a German holding camp hidden in a laundry basket, and spending nine months in a cellar without any light. At the end of the war, Dorit emerged as a nine-year-old weighing three stone and without hair, with supposedly just three months to live. Yet she was absolutely determined to carry on with her life, and did exactly that—Dorit went on to become an extremely successful recording artist in Germany and, more recently, has written a book detailing her wartime experiences: Behind the Smile: From Yellow Star to Pop Star. At a time when there are increasingly fewer Holocaust survivors still with us, it was an absolute privilege for our pupils, parents, and staff to hear these testimonies first-hand. Throughout their talks, both Marcel and Dorit emphasized the absolute necessity of continuing to remember and reflect upon the atrocities of the Holocaust, as well as the lessons we must learn from this terrible period of History. In particular, Marcel stressed that while he can never forgive the Nazi regime for the Final Solution, we must turn our gaze forwards to the future to ensure that ‘never again’ is not just a phrase, but our reality. hppc.co.uk

Kate Moss’s wellbeing secrets as she turns Supermodel and all-round British national treasure, Kate Moss, recently celebrated her 50th birthday. By Yolanthe Fawehinmi

“I

’m not turning 50,” Moss, who rose to fame in the Nineties, said in a recent interview with the Sunday Times. “No. I’m not thinking about it. I do not feel 50.” It’s hard to belive she’s marking such a milestone, but the Croydon-born, mum-of-one has swapped catwalks and London parties for a more holistic life in Oxfordshire. So how does she look after herself ? Here are her wellbeing secrets through the years. Morning tea and meditation “I don’t look back. I’ve reflected a lot on the past but now I like to be present, live in the now. I’m being present in the moment, seeing things, being mindful,” she says on her skincare and wellness website Cosmoss, where she also sells her infamous Dawn Tea, her drink of choice for first thing in a morning. The tea includes hibiscus flowers, crushed bay leaves and ginger roots, designed to help energise the body, strengthen skin, hair and nails and maintain immunity. “I find taking these few moments to myself really helps me prepare for my day,” she told Porter Magazine.

68 FEBRUARY 2024

Though it took her some time to find the type of meditation that works best, she now practices transcendental meditation for 10-15 minutes, where she repeats a personalised mantra. She has said that it helps to build the discipline to stop and be “in herself ”. Manifesting and daily affirmations Spending a lot of time in the make-up chair throughout her modelling career means that

Wild swimming It seems Moss, who has been the face of Calvin Klein and Chanel, has taken her bucolic lifestyle to another level. Since moving to Little Faringdon in West Oxfordshire, where she is surrounded by outdoor space, she has taken up wild swimming and growing her own vegetables. Moss goes wild swimming “in a secret place, in the middle of lots of fields and only the villagers are allowed to use it”, according to the Sunday Times, which has many surprising health benefits, such as improving blood pressure and fat levels in the blood. fashion’s former wild child has learned plenty from the best MUAs in the industry. Moss says it was Charlotte Tilbury who taught her about manifesting and affirming herself. “If you believe enough, the universe will deliver,” Moss said in an interview for Harper’s Bazaar. The wellness entrepreneur also created Love Letters for Cosmoss – a set of 150 daily affirmation cards curated by Moss and contributors from fashion, philosophy and the arts – in order to support, share and inspire.

“If you believe enough, the universe will deliver,” Moss said in an interview for Harper’s Bazaar

Crystal charging Moss, who has appeared on the cover of British Vogue over 40 times, also keeps healing crystals, which she charges under the moonlight. “I put all my crystals on a tray and put them outside in the garden,” the model said during her Sunday Times interview. “Just cleansing the crystals, charging the crystals.” Her favourites include rose quartz, which represents compassion and love, and melonite, which is meant to channel protective and grounding properties.

T

he perfect combination of fashion and function, boots are a hard-working cold-weather staple and a great way to update your look in the New Year. For AW23, you’re spoilt for choice with a flurry of catwalk-inspired styles hitting the high street ready to complete your winter wardrobe. From sturdy stompers to elegant evening options, these are the boots to be seen in this season…

USH PUPPIES BLACK/ PINK RAYA CHELSEA BOOTS, £59 (WERE £100)

BILLIE BLACK SUEDE, £239, AVAILABLE FROM SOLE BLISS.

70 FEBRUARY 2024

Knee-high boots The biggest footwear trend of the season, long boots (hitting just below the knee or slightly above) have taken over from shorter styles as the celebrity-approved staples AW23. Embraced by the likes of Kim Kardashian and Selena Gomez, flat or block-heeled black knee boots can be teamed with mini skirts, midi dresses and more, and they’re a chic day-to-night option too. Creamy colours Chunky tread boots are still very much on trend, but this year for a fresh feel it’s all about pale hues. Part of the ‘latte dressing’ look, a beige or cream pair will complete any coffee-inspired outfit. Stiletto heels After years of super-thick soles and oversized

silhouettes, we’re now seeing the return of spindlyheeled boots. From neat kitten heels (seen on the runways of Christopher Kane and Jil Sander) to vertiginous stilettos (courtesy of Loewe, Hermès and Acne Studios) these boots mean business. Bright soles Want to add a pop of colour to brighten up winter outfits? A pair of bold-hued boots will do the trick. Take your cue from Bottega Veneta – the originator of the tyre tread trend – with a pair of chunky ankle boots with a neon orange, sunny yellow or emerald green sole. All-weather boots Taking the ‘hikingcore’ look to the next level, ultra-insulated all-weather boots are the catwalk trend that’s proving practical during this season of storms. Whether you’re hitting the slopes or socialising in the city, team padded boots with cosy knits and a puffer jacket for a sporty-chic vibe. Statement silver As decreed by Beyoncé and a slew of big-name designers, silver was the shade of 2023 and it’s not going anywhere yet. Metallic boots are an easy way into the disco-tastic aesthetic. Make Sixties-style block heels or western boots your daytime staple, or go glam with silver stilettos.

HOW TO WEAR THE PANTONE COLOUR OF THE YEAR 2024

P

The trend forecaster predicts this peachy hue will be popular next year. By Katie Wright

antone has announced its Colour of the Year 2024 is Peach Fuzz. The trend forecasting company said the pastel shade was chosen because it highlights “our desire for togetherness with others and the feelings this creates”. Reminiscent of peach skin, shade 12-1023 is said to be “a gift to the senses, creating a symbiotic relationship between our sense of taste, sight, touch, and scent”. The faded coral tone is much paler than last year’s Viva Magenta and 2022’s Very Peri (a periwinkle blue). “Peach Fuzz presents a fresh approach to a new softness,” said a statement unveiling the shade on Instagram. The “subtly sensual” colour is “a heartfelt peach hue bringing a feeling of tenderness and communicating a message of caring and sharing,

community and collaboration.” The cool-toned hue is similar to that of the Gucci gown worn by actor Jenna Ortega on the 2023 Golden Globes red carpet. It also harks back to the peaches and cream make-up trend as seen on the likes of Margot Robbie (who, let’s not forget, almost singlehandedly ushered in the ubiquitous Barbie Pink trend), Hailey Bieber and Natalie Portman. Launched in 1999, every year a panel of experts at the Pantone Colour Institute analyse global trends in entertainment, art, travel, fashion and technology. Together, they select a colour that they think represents the current zeitgeist and will resonate with people around the world in the coming year. Wondering whether you should start stocking up on Peach Fuzz fashion buys in preparation for 2024?

“They select a colour that they think represents the current zeitgeist and will resonate with people around the world in the coming year”

“Peach Fuzz will bring a refreshing and gentle sophistication to your wardrobe,” says Cliff Bashforth, managing director of Colour Me Beautiful Europe. Compared to the last two shades it’s a “subtler and more refined shade, rendering it a versatile choice” in terms of clothing and accessories. “One of Peach Fuzz’s strengths lies in its gender-neutral appeal,” Bashforth continues. “As the fashion industry progresses towards greater inclusivity and the dismantling of gender stereotypes, this colour emerges as a symbol of transcending traditional boundaries, appealing to a diverse spectrum of individuals.” From floaty summer dresses and cosy knits to suits and sportswear, peach pieces can work whatever the season. Experiment with different fabric textures and prints, Bashforth suggests: “The incorporation of Peach Fuzz into patterns, such as floral prints or geometric designs, can add depth and interest to garments.” And remember you don’t have to wear it head to toe: “Maybe shoes, sandals, a handbag or even a belt can elevate your look and bring you bang up to date without spending a fortune.” Worried that you might look ‘washed out’ by this pale peach? Bashforth says that people with dark hair and eyes (no matter what their skin tone) may want to team it with other colours. “You’ll need to balance your contrasting appearance by wearing Peach Fuzz with darker neutrals such as charcoal or burgundy,” he says. “Should you wish to make an entrance and turn heads, team it with purple.” On the other hand, it’s good news for blondes (from mousey to platinum) with porcelain to olive skin: “This is the perfect shade for you – team it with taupe, cocoa or pewter for an elegant tonal look, or sage green if you want to be enviably

fashionable this coming season.” Want to jump on the Colour of the Year bandwagon right away? Ethical footwear brand Cariuma has collaborated with Pantone on a range of Peach Fuzz trainers. Available in four styles, the minimalist sneakers are made with sustainably sourced materials including natural rubber, organic cotton canvas and recycled plastic. FEBRUARY 2024 73

How to wear bold colours and wow in winter

Think bright and beautiful if you’re feeling blue, says Sam Wylie-Harris.

“Don’t underestimate the power of colour, and how wearing bright shades on drab days can lift your mood”

W

hen the weather is dull and those dark mornings are getting you down, the best tonic is to ditch those dark separates and reach for the rainbow… “Don’t underestimate the power of colour, and how wearing bright shades on drab days can lift your mood – and have a positive effect on the people around you,” says Cliff Bashforth, managing director of Colour Me Beautiful, Europe. Indeed, a little bit of selfexpression can go a long way. 76 FEBRUARY 2024

“Whether it be head to toe tonal brights or an accent using your accessories, a pop of colour is a great way to brighten your style as we wait for the warmer months,” says Debbie Seymour, head of buying and quality women’s and kids, FatFace. Otherwise

FASHION, HEALTH & BEAUTY

also think about texture… “A shiny fabric will appear brighter than something in a faux fur, boucle, corduroy, or tweed – the type of fabrics you’ll probably be wearing in winter months. “So again, if you want to cheer yourself up and wear brighter shades, texture can play an important part in the overall look of the garment or accessory,” suggests Bashforth.

Coloured knits

known as dopamine dressing in fashion circles, if the thought of wearing bold colours fills you with dread, Bashforth suggests adding a colourful accessory – instead of choosing a vivid colour as a major garment. “Of course, if you’re a creative or dramatic kind of person, you’ll just adore wearing a showstopping number that will turn the heads of everyone around you!” he highlights.

HERE’S HOW TO NAIL THIS UPBEAT LOOK…

Bright accessories First things first, and depending on your budget, Bashforth suggests ‘shopping your own wardrobe’ – and pulling out several brighter accessories. “A scarf can brighten up a neutral piece, whether it be patterned or plain. And jewellery can really ‘lift’ an outfit, especially if a moderate-sized piece is chosen.” Otherwise, he says to opt for a colourful handbag, or purchase shoes or boots in a brighter shade.”

Eye-catching hues with luxelooking sheen When it comes to colour coding, Bashforth says to 78 FEBRUARY 2024

“Add a touch of warmth to your outfit with a cosy knit or cardigan in a bright hue, helping you lift the tone of your day”

“Just because the day is grey doesn’t mean your wardrobe has to be!” declares Seymour. “Cosy knits in refreshingly bright shades provide a much-needed escape from even the dreariest days – beat the blues by dressing in all the colours of the rainbow.” She continues: “Add a touch of warmth to your outfit with a cosy knit or cardigan in a bright hue, helping you lift the tone of your day. “Lively hues can act like a burst of sunshine on a cloudy day, injecting warmth and positivity into your mood, as well as your attire.”

Bold and brave “Red is bold, red is bright, we associate it with effortless confidence,” notes Seymour. “So dress to match.” Whether you opt for a solid or kaleidoscope of colour, she suggests styling your showy dress with a chunky knit or black leather jacket, tights and boots for a statement look. And if you choose a lightweight fabric, she goes on to say: “It’s totally seasonless, also great for spring and summer with a denim jacket and sandals.”

Pop of colour to cheer the clouds Naturally, the lousy weather tends to dampen our style – but every cloud has a silver lining… As Seymour puts it: “The dark mornings and harsh January wet winds aren’t set to go anywhere, so brighten up your day with bright tones, such as a colourful waterproof coat. “Not only can it protect you from the elements, but its vivid shade will lift your mood instantly, protecting you from the winter blues, too. “By infusing a splash of lively colour into your everyday outfits, you can transform the overcast atmosphere into a canvas of optimism,” she adds.

WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENS TO YOUR BODY DURING A COLD WATER SWIM? “R

Imy Brighty-Potts asks GPs about the immediate impact on the body.

esearch suggests that cold water swimming has a wide variety of health benefits including mood improvement linked with the release of ‘feel good’ brain chemicals, reduced depression and improvement in general wellbeing. Cold water swimming can also have cardiovascular benefits,” says GP Dr Nisa Aslam from Puressentiel (uk.puressentiel.com). However, safety is obviously something to be wary of when it comes to cold water swimming – also known as winter swimming or ice swimming. “[It] requires preparation and acclimatisation and should be done with a group of people, not on your own,” warns Aslam. “Warm up your leg and arm muscles before you wade in. Don’t jump into cold water, rather wade in slowly up to your waist, dip your shoulders into the water then swim.” But what happens to different parts of our bodies when we take our cold water dip?

80 FEBRUARY 2024

LUNGS

Ever jumped in a cold pool and suddenly felt like you can’t breathe? “The first stage following full immersion is known as ‘cold shock’. In the first few seconds your lungs contract. This [can be] followed by uncontrollable rapid or deep breathing – hyperventilation – and loss of breathing control,” says Aslam. It wouldn’t necessarily happen to regular, acclimatised swimmers (although it may). But, she says: “If you are not a regular cold water swimmer, this can happen as a physiological reaction.”

HEART Our hearts react quickly to the shock. “Your heart rate, blood pressure and output of blood from the heart – cardiac output – increase rapidly,” Aslam says. If you are fit and healthy then this isn’t necessarily something to worry about. However it may be, “if you have not done this type of activity before – and let’s say have a full stomach from Christmas dinner plus consumed a few alcohol-based drinks”.

“[It] requires preparation and acclimatisation and should be done with a group of people, not on your own”

SKIN “Swimming in cold water can actually change your complexion slightly. Due to the increased heart rate and blood flow your skin will get a healthy glow for a short time after you’ve finished,” says Dr Rhianna McClymont, a GP at online healthcare service Livi (livi.co.uk/).

BRAIN Swimming in cold water makes your brain produce more endorphins – a hormone that makes us feel good and can even relieve pain – to combat the stressful feelings created by the quick change in environment, McClymont explains. “This kind of activity has also been shown to be beneficial for our mental health too. Regular cold water swimming can help us to cope better with different types of stress, as the body starts to learn how to regulate our stress hormones,” she notes. “Not only are these changes internally happening, but the increase in adrenaline from being in cold water can create a feeling of euphoria, [due to] the release of endorphins. As a result, cold water swimming or a cold bath can improve our overall mood, confidence and even libido.”

the skin, feet, toes, hands and fingers – constrict. It’s a response which is the result of the action of ‘cold receptors in the periphery peaking after 30 seconds with adaptation taking a couple of minutes or so. “Once a swimmer is able to bring their breathing under control following the first two-minute phase of cold exposure, they enter the second phase of short-term exposure,” she adds. “During this phase, the muscle and nerve function is affected, particularly in the arms, head and neck. Biochemical activity in the body cells, muscles and nerves is interrupted. As the muscles cool further, there may be an increased sense of pain.”

“Swimming in cold water makes your brain produce more endorphins – a hormone that makes us feel good and can even relieve pain”

OUR LIMBS There’s a reason we feel the cold most in our extremities; like hands, feet, arms and legs. Aslam explains: “Blood vessels in the periphery – such as FEBRUARY 2024 81

PERSISTENT HIP PAIN:

when to consider surgery

T

he hip is the largest ball and socket joint in the body. It’s susceptible to damage given the level of continuous wear and tear it receives on a daily basis. And, this degeneration can lead to injury or osteoarthritis. Hip replacement surgery can correct this. If your hip problems are affecting your quality of life day-to-day, surgery could mean your life improves tremendously. So how do you know if you need hip replacement surgery? King Edward VII’s Hospital in London offers this advice: Hip pain that doesn’t go away Hip replacement could be appropriate if you start to experience persistent hip pain; • at night • at rest • during exercise • or all three Hip pain that that gets in the way of daily life If your hip pain starts to interfere with everyday tasks and things you enjoy, this is the biggest sign. If left untreated, this discomfort will lead to a loss in mobility and independence.

84 FEBRUARY 2024

Sometimes it is then tempting to learn to live with the pain. This can mean relying on pain relief medications and walking aids. And, everyday life could become more difficult as your mobility diminishes. What hip replacement surgery involves Hip replacement surgery removes the damaged part of the hip joint, and replaces it with an artificial one known as a prosthesis. Once completed, it will typically last a minimum of 15 years. What to expect after surgery If your hip pain was due to your hip joint only, then you can expect to be free from pain once you’ve recovered from surgery. Sometimes, back and leg pain can still persist after surgery to correct the hip joint. It’s common for patients to get up and out of bed the same day, or the day after surgery, with the help of physiotherapists and nurses. Sweetpea & Willow 2023 in Review and News for 2024 | Colour of the Year Pieces

A

s we say goodbye to 2023 and step into the New Year, we have been reflecting on all the exciting collaborations and trends that have graced Sweetpea & Willow. From UK exclusive brand launches to fresh Handmade in London designs, we would love to take some time to look back on a handful of our favourite moments of the year, and what we are looking forward to in 2024.

THE YEAR FOR COLLABORATIONS AT SWEETPEA & WILLOW 2023 was a year filled with exclusive collaborations and new brand launches as we introduced a handful of sophisticated and contemporary designs at Sweetpea & Willow. Our work with Uttermost and Skyline Design as well as being the only UK retailer of Belgium interior brand Dome Deco and One London House, allowed us to bring refined luxury and timeless pieces into many interiors.

SWEETPEA & WILLOW HOME INFLUENCER AWARDS 2023 Our Home Influencer Awards returned for the third year in a row in 2023, and we were truly thrilled with the response and entrees we received. We were extremely excited to crown Olive Haller as our winner this year, with recognition to Borja and Dean, and Sophia as our runner’s up!

SINK INTO HANDMADE IN LONDON Throughout the year we introduced a number of dreamy Handmade in London designs, with many more in the works to be unveiled in 2024! Our brand new modular sofas introduced a new way to build your own seating space to suit any style of interiors, making sure your house always feels like a home. We also extended our gorgeous fabric selection to include more hard-wearing and eco-friendly fabrics as part of our move to make sustainable choices across our website. We are excited to see this trend of modular designs take over the interior design world next year!

PANTONE COLOUR OF THE YEAR Pantone have just released their Colour of the Year 2024 and it is... Peach Fuzz! Pantone Colour of the Year 2024:

PEACH FUZZ

Create a mindful space with peach

A

velvety gentle peach tone, Peach Fuzz calls for connection and compassion as we look to the year ahead. Rebecca Snowden, Interior Style Advisor at Furniture And Choice shares 3 ways to style this cosy and playful colour at home.

Evoke the summer sunshine with peach Described as a ‘perfect balance between pink and orange’, embrace peach’s warm and cosy qualities by choosing it as the primary colour in the bedroom. “Use peach to evoke the fresh summer sunshine on a sunny day,” Rebecca says. Choose a lighter peach tone alongside Peach Fuzz for two tone walls and balance with relaxing neutrals. Ground the room with a comfy grey fabric bed and white linen as well as wooden textures such as a rattan bedside table. Layer with pops of sky blue and peach accessories to complete the soft, feminine look.

Contrast peach with bold, vibrant green “With peach’s gentle and nurturing elements fostering a close connection with nature, create a chic contrast with a bold and vibrant green in an open plan kitchen diner,” Rebecca says. “Pantone recommends pairing peach with blue-green hues like 16-5123 Baltic or 14-5416 Bermuda for a harmonious and peaceful feel.” Bring out peach’s soft and relaxing qualities by complementing it with a wooden dining table and oak flooring. Style 94 FEBRUARY 2024

‘’Bring peach’s cosy sensibilities to the forefront with two tone peach walls in the living room,” Rebecca says. “Anchor the room with a grey faux leather sofa and layer with colourful cushions.” Tie the look together with mindful accents throughout the room to create a soothing ambience. Set the scene with natural textures that inspire the senses like a jute rug, rattan accessories and indoor greenery. Add personal touches such as artwork or personal photographs to inspire cheerfulness and prioritise wellbeing. furniturechoice.co.uk

A POOL FOR EVERYONE There are so many reasons to choose Easy Pools… GREAT DESIGNS AND SPEED OF INSTALLATION Easy Pool’s huge modular range means that there is a shape and size to suit everyone. Gone are the days when building a pool meant having builders on site for weeks on end, not to mention delays caused by rain. Most pools in the range are completed in a few weeks. Compare that to a concrete pool that can take months to complete, during which time your garden looks a mess. Pool sizes range from 4m to 12m with flat or sloped bases. There are currently short lead times as most models are in stock.

SMOOTH FINISH Leisure Pools fibreglass swimming pools have a smooth, clean gelcoat finish that is non-abrasive.

MAINTENANCE-FREE The gelcoat finish on a Leisure Pool not only looks great, it is also so easy to look after. The surface is smooth and non-porous so it cleans easily and is very stain resistant.

COLOUR RANGE Leisure Pools offers an exclusive range of seven beautiful colours, each with its own sparkle and shimmer finish, ensuring you will be able to find the ideal colour to suit your home, taste and budget.

COMPATIBILITY Salt chlorinators, chlorine, freshwater systems and ozone systems all work wonderfully well with Leisure Pools fiberglass pools. Whatever your choice may be, it will be compatible.

SAFETY FOR CHILDREN AND PETS Automatic safety covers comply with all EU regulations. Many pool owners have children or grandchildren or entertain friends with children. When owning a pool where kids will be playing, safety is a major concern. The side of a swimming pool can often be slick and hard to grasp for children. The safety ledge allows children to stand on the ledge and grasp the side of the pool. This can be helpful for children learning to swim, and can provide parents with added peace of mind..

WARRANTY If you are getting quotes, ask if a lifetime warranty is being provided on the structure of the swimming pool. At best with a concrete pool you will get a seven-year warranty. Do you hope to have a pool for longer than that? The manufacturer is so certain that they build the world’s best composite pools, that they offer a Lifetime Structural Warranty and a Lifetime Structural Osmosis Warranty on all swimming pools. 96 FEBRUARY 2024

Top things to consider when designing a bathroom space fittings are the perfect choice. By hiding the pipes within the wall cavity, the fittings sit flush to the wall, reducing the possibility of bumping into them when showering and creating a sleek finished look. You can create additional in-shower storage by utilising the void in a stud or false wall to build alcoves for storing shower products, in turn maximising space on the floor. These alcoves can easily become a real design feature, by adding lighting and/or contrasting tiles to inject personality into the space.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT GLASS Shower glass comes in many shapes and sizes but there’s always an option to suit your space. Firstly, think about whether you want a shower enclosure or a more open space with a shower screen. If you’re opting for an enclosure, consider which shape will work best, such as pentagonal to utilise the corner of a room or three-sided if you have a bit more space available. If you go for shower glass, think about which style you like, whether that be Crittall-style, fluted or the emerging trend, etched.

GO ECO Sustainability within bathrooms has never been more important than it is right now and with the cost of living also rising exponentially, it’s important to consider the ways in which you can minimise excess energy and water consumption within the bathroom. One way to reduce water usage is to choose a shower head fitted with a flow restrictor. Luckily, this option doesn’t mean you end up with a substandard shower as each flow restrictor shower has been carefully designed to reduce water consumption but still offer a pleasurable showering experience. Alternatively, you can opt for a technology-led shower which enriches shower water with air droplets, making for an invigorating shower experience.

Afternoon Tea Collection by Victoria Eggs

P

erfect for Mother’s Day, the Wildlife in Spring and Afternoon Tea collections from award-winning British designer Victoria Eggs make for thoughtful gifts. The delicately illustrated Wildlife in Spring collection highlights a nostalgic and hopeful view of this blossoming time of year. With the promise of new beginnings, the hedgerows are bursting with life, filled with birdsong and sweetly scented flowers attracting bees, butterflies and insects alike. A blackbird, sparrow and wren, some of Britain’s most well-known birds, can be found surrounded by budding blossoms, beautiful roses and elegant magnolia. Born from Victoria’s desire to create a timeless floral design inspired by childhood memories of exploring hedgerows around the UK on family holidays and being taught by her young daughter to stop and smell the roses. Wildlife in Spring offers a relaxed view through lush foliage and gives dreamers a space to breathe and enjoy well deserved peace and quiet.

110 FEBRUARY 2024

The collection includes two mugs, one with the word ‘mum’ inscribed on the inner rim, tea towel, apron, double oven glove, oven mitt, canvas bag, jugs, cosmetic bag, wash bag, notecards, cushion cover, pot grab, coaster, shortbread biscuits, and English breakfast tea. The decadent Afternoon Tea collection was inspired by Victoria’s love of this quintessentially British ritual. “There are few hours in life more agreeable than the hour dedicated to the ceremony known as afternoon tea.” - Henry James As with Victoria’s other collections, all of the products are hand-crafted right here in the UK. The fine bone china ceramics are made of the finest Cornish clay, and the textiles are printed onto unbleached 100% cotton using plant dyes that are environmentally friendly. The collection includes a mug, tea cup and saucer, tea towel, bauble, apron, double oven glove, canvas bag, English breakfast tea, shortbread biscuits, and coasters. victoriaeggs.com
