Jane takes inspiration from my local Norfolk and Cambridgeshire countryside, history and tradition, flora and fauna. She loves colour and the textural qualities of natural materials like wood, wool and copper. Jane experiments with the power of invention through processes such as steam-bending that expose the natural properties of materials but also reference history and sentiment. Jane amplifies these traditional values, in an innovative way using the simplification of processes, crafts and construction techniques to celebrate the simplicity of design that unifies form and function. This innocence, honesty and naivety expose an understanding of how it was made to teach and inspire children and adults in the mythology of making and materials.10am-5pm. Painshill begins restoration of one of its most spectacular 18th century follies
P
ainshill, England’s most elegant 18th century landscape garden is delighted to announce that restoration is now underway on The Temple of Bacchus. One of Painshill’s most treasured follies, holding a rich heritage and reputation, The Temple of Bacchus is the pièce de résistance to be completed in July 2017. With works now underway on the restoration of The Temple of Bacchus, Painshill are working closely with contractor Cliveden Conservation (who also restored the Crystal Grotto at Painshill), to reinstate the original vision and concept of the brilliantly imaginative designer Hon. Charles Hamilton. The Temple originally home to a collection of antiques collected by Hamilton during his Grand Tours to Italy, featured a seven foot marble centrepiece statue of Bacchus, the Roman god of wine as well as 12 marble busts of Caesars. And whilst the contents of The Temple of Bacchus were sold in 1797, the original foundations of the temple have been preserved and restored ready for the restoration. An important and historic folly which dates back to 1762, The Temple has been admired throughout history with previous visitors including John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, the second and third presidents of the United States in 1786. It was also described by William Gilpin, English artist and landscape designer as ‘One of the most beautiful things of its kind that I have ever seen. Its form is Grecian and in the highest degree elegant and beautiful’. Michael Gove, Chief Executive of Painshill comments; ‘the restoration of The Temple of Bacchus has been longawaited and thanks to the benefit of a private donation, a fine casting from the original Bacchus statue has been gifted to the Trust and we are all very excited to see this housed in the completed Temple’. Restorations are now underway, with estimated
completion in July 2017, where it will be open for public viewing. Painshill Park Trust funds its business and conservation operations from visitor income and other revenue streams, but all restoration to date has been funded through the generosity of individuals and charitable trusts along with the Lottery Heritage Fund. Visit www.painshillpark.co.uk to find out how you can make a donation and be part of this remarkable project.
THE DETAILS Whilst anticipation builds for the restored folly’s reveal, the remaining 158 acre wonderland offering something for everyone, is open to the public 10am – 6pm (Mar-Oct) and 10am – 4pm (Nov – Feb).Visit www.painshill.co.uk to book your visit online. 1 2 NOVEMBER 2 0 1 6

Albury Vineyard Harvests its Best Fruit Yet!
A
n army of nearly 100 local wine enthusiasts spent three days recently grape picking at Albury Vineyard and their verdict – the fruit are the best they have seen since the vines were planted in 2009. Vineyard owner Nick Wenman believes firmly in involving the local community with the annual harvest. The pickers include members of Albury Wine Club and the harvesting is a great social event in the Albury calendar. The harvest is almost complete now after a tricky season of exciting highs and worrying lows, all down to the unpredictable English weather! “We had a difficult start to the year with extreme spring frosts, followed by a cold early summer and a terrible onset of downy mildew in the vineyard,” said Nick. “However, we are delighted to now be harvesting some of the best fruit we’ve ever had since planting the vines seven years ago! “Temperatures on the vineyard in August and September were much higher than average and, as a result, the fruit is very ripe. Yields are lower than the last couple of years and rumour has it this is the case for a number of vineyards in the area, but quality is much more important to us than quantity.” Albury Wine Club members are always the first to taste the new release of Albury’s Silent Pool Rosé, and the 2016 vintage will be available in May next year. But they will have to wait a bit longer to taste the sparkling wine made from this year’s grapes as that won’t be ready until 2019! Albury Vineyard, in the beautiful Surrey Hills just outside Guildford, produces still and sparkling organic wines of the highest quality. The vineyard was planted in 2009 by owner Nick Wenman and comprises 21,000 vines

spanning 12 acres across the North Downs. Nick believes that key to the success of the wines is the vineyard’s commitment to organic and biodynamic principles, and Albury is one of only a handful of organic vineyards in England. Demand is soaring for Albury wines, especially since they were voted Producer of the Year in the Surrey Life Food & Drink Awards earlier this year. Searcy’s St Pancras (Europe’s longest Champagne bar) and the Michelin starred Chez Bruce in Wandsworth are the latest restaurants to feature Albury wines on their lists.

ravel the Steppes of Central Asia and feel the patriotic heart of Russia beating in this concert of evocative, passionate sound-painting by Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov, Borodin and Glinka at G Live, Guildford on November 19, 7.30pm. This is a tremendous programme: Glinka’s Overture – Russlan and Ludmilla; Borodin’s In the Steppes of Central Asia; Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No 2 and Rachmaninov’s Symphony No 2. Did you watch our last Russian concert two years ago? We introduced our audience to a fabulous young Japanese pianist, Masayuki Tayama, who combines flamboyant virtuosity with great musical communication. He went down a storm then and we are absolutely delighted to welcome him back to play another of Tchaikovsky’s great piano concertos, this time, the No 2. Glinka’s overture is an earthy and exuberant showpiece of Russian folk music noted for its imaginative use of dissonance, chromotics and Eastern elements. East meets West again in the Borodin. In the Steppes of Central Asia was composed as a musical tableau so listen out for the sound of plodding hooves of horses and camels and the Asian theme given to the French horns. Rachmaninov’s magnificent Symphony No 2 eventually won the composer his second Glinka Award but because he lacked confidence he spent months revising the work before its successful premiere in 1908. The triumph regained Rachmaninoff ’s sense of self-worth as a

Where Luxury Lives A lifetime spent in the company of world renowned-silversmiths, master goldsmiths and exceptional jewellery designers has given boutique owner, Mike Taylor, the inspiration to try something new in the beautiful surrounds of Royal Berkshire.
W
hen it comes to luxurious jewellery, beautifully crafted silverware and the finest examples of goldsmithing in the United Kingdom, your mind may instantly take you to the gleaming boutiques on London’s Bond Street. But one goldsmith has transformed his well-established jewellery boutique in Royal Berkshire into a unique destination for quality and craftsmanship in the Home Counties, causing some of Britain’s finest crafts people to stand up and take notice. Since 1989, professional goldsmith and jewellery designer, Mike Taylor, has welcomed customers into his Crowthorne boutique. Inside, Taylor’s loyal customers have become accustomed to seeing glimpses of his in-house workshop, where precious family jewels are restored, polished and perfected to look like new. This workshop is also where Taylor brings his own, unique designs to life; blending his lifelong training as a goldsmith with his passion for jewellery to create something truly unusual for his clients. Yet despite this success, Taylor’s first-hand experience of owning a high street boutique has encouraged him to try something new. The result is Taylor & Co Master Goldsmiths – a complete rebranding of his Crowthorne boutique and an exciting reimaging of what it means to sell jewellery, silverware and fabulous objet d’art in 2016. While all of Taylor & Co’s in-demand workshop services will remain, the boutique will be transformed with a handpicked selection of the UK’s very best master goldsmiths. Many have a personal connection with Taylor and, as a result, will make regular visits to Crowthorne to meet customers, share their experiences and sit down in the in-house workshop to produce bespoke commissions. “We pride ourselves on bringing a ‘Bond Street

experience’ to the Home Counties,” Taylor says proudly. “I decided to rename my business Taylor & Co to really highlight the company we keep, the master craftspeople we associate ourselves with and the wonderful, experienced designers that our customers will have access to.” Unlike other boutiques on the high street, Taylor & Co will offer designers and goldsmiths much more in exchange for their skills and expertise. When you buy from Taylor & Co, you can be confident in the fact that the people who lovingly crafted your new silverware or piece of jewellery are rewarded fairly for their work. Taylor says: “We take a philanthropic approach at Taylor & Co by ensuring every single designer or goldsmith we feature in the boutique is rewarded for their brilliant work, their creativity and their lifetime of training. We offer the reward and recognition that they deserve, but which is so often lacking in today’s world.” Taylor & Co may be tucked away in leafy Crowthorne, far from the bright lights of London, but visitors will discover British heritage brands that can’t be found in retail premises anywhere else in the world. Take for example the
illustrious and world-renowned House of Benney, which, as the proud owner of three royal warrants, makes precious objects for Her Majesty the Queen, Prince Philip and the rest of the Royal Family. Until now, the House of Benney has only ever worked with a small selection of private clients, but a personal relationship with Taylor has encouraged the prestigious company to find a second home in Crowthorne. In fact, House of Benney’s late founder Gerald Benney employed Taylor as his last ever apprentice in the 1970s; teaching him countless skills and enabling him to become the master goldsmith he is today. Gerald’s son Simon Benney now runs the company, and is proud to be continuing the relationship his father forged with Taylor so many years ago. Benney says: “My relationship with Taylor & Co is based on trust, which is why I think it will work so well. The House of Benney specialises in contemporary hollowware and silverware, especially fine enamelling. My clients are based all over the world, including here in the UK, in America and the Far East.
“I have created jewellery for Princess Diana, for Margaret Thatcher and for both Prince Harry and Prince William”. “I have created jewellery for Princess Diana, for Margaret Thatcher and for both Prince Harry and Prince William. There is no other retailer in the world that has my work, but I’m very proud to now be associated with Taylor & Co.” Stunning examples of the House of Benney’s signature enamelling, fine silverware and jewellery will take pride of place in Taylor & Co, providing customers with an inspirational showcase from which to commission their own pieces. Crucially for Taylor, his aim is to fill Taylor & Co with goldsmiths, silversmiths and designers of the highest calibre.
As a freeman of the City of London and a freeman of the capital’s prestigious Goldsmiths Company, Taylor is uniquely placed to find the craftspeople often hidden behind workshop doors. His quest has also led him to The Institute of Professional Goldsmiths – an organisation that promotes and supports craftspeople with unrivalled, world-class talent. The most accomplished members of this organisation are described as ‘Fellows’, with many praised for maintaining some of Britain’s most crucial jewellery-making skills. One such Fellow is Paul Draper, also known as Jewel Mechanic, who will also be presenting his handmade creations at Taylor & Co. Draper is a designer, goldsmith and diamond mounter, with a passion for creating bold and distinctive jewellery that’s not for the faint-hearted. Dedicated ‘Designer Days’ at Taylor & Co will give fans of Draper’s jewellery a chance to meet the man himself and discuss one-of-a-kind bespoke creations. It is this unprecedented access to some of Great Britain’s finest craftspeople that sets Taylor & Co apart from the competition. As Taylor explains: “What we want to do is find exceptional designers, be it of jewellery, silverware or objet d’art, and introduce them to our customers in the Home Counties, as well as discerning collectors across the UK. “We’ve created a new concept that truly rewards these skilled artisans for their craftsmanship, while allowing them to meet the customers who may one day commission that very special heirloom piece they will treasure for generations to come.” If it’s something unique you’re after, the boutiques of Bond Street may be enthralling, but there’s plenty of luxury to be found a little closer to home. ‘SENSORY STORYTELLING’ A sensory experience to create unique memories that live on. THE FRAGRANCE COLLECTIONS Working with AccorHotels perfumery team, Lizzie Ostrom has helped create nine fragrances that each tell a story and bring to life a moment from British cultural history – from the fashionable beauty products of Regency spa towns to a bouquet inspired by the Victoria art of ‘floriography’ and an aroma inspired by Windsor Great Park, each fragrance is grounded in English fragrance heritage. Castle Hotel’s ‘Making a Mark on History’ collection feature recreations of original nineteenth century recipes directly inspired by the Victorian Royalty.

M
Gallery by Sofitel, the intimate collection of boutique hotels with stories to tell, unveils Sensory Storytelling, a programme of sensory guest experiences that bring to life the unique story of each property. Available from 31st October, guests staying at Castle Hotel, Windsor, Francis Hotel, Bath and Queen’s Hotel, Cheltenham will be able to choose their own scent to help create memories that live on past their stay. Partnering with renowned scent historian Lizzie Ostrom from Odette Toilette, MGallery by Sofitel has created three new fragrance collections for each of its UK properties, inspired by the heritage, personality and unique story of each hotel. Referencing each hotel’s unique positioning and drawing from archival research on eighteenth and nineteenth century perfume formulations, guests will be able to choose their fragrance as a finishing touch for their room or suite. Continuing their Sensory Storytelling journey outside the room, guests can learn about some of the individual notes and materials that make up each scent, via smell and taste through a specially-created cocktail and Afternoon Tea. “Smell” says Lizzie Ostrom, “is so often described as evocative, a trigger for buried memories and a poignant reminder of a place we once knew. Often we form these associations by accident. We don’t try to lay down a scent memory rather it comes to us involuntarily”.
2 4 NOVEMBER 2 0 1 6
Ensuring the sensory journey does not end in room, each hotel has created a unique signature cocktail and Afternoon Tea heroing particular fragrance notes from its collection. Using key ingredients from Victorian baking, Castle Hotel Windsor’s afternoon tea features honey & orange delices and jasmine sponge cakes, whilst the signature cocktail playfully infuses jasmine and neroli within its serve. Each hotel will have a visual celebration of their unique fragrance collection via a stunning welcome floral display created by a local florist, consisting of floral notes found in their particular signature scents. Sensory Storytelling at MGallery by Sofitel is available from 31st October 2016, priced at £170.00 pp which includes an overnight stay, room fragrance, signature Sensory Storytelling cocktail and Afternoon Tea.

hether for the experienced shooting enthusiast, the novice or the crack shot, the recently expanded William Evans gun room and shop in Bisley, Surrey brings the very best in traditional gun making quality and craftsmanship to the home-counties. Located on the grounds of The National Shooting Centre, William Evans Bisley is one of the few remaining independent, traditional gun makers, boasting more than 130 years of world renowned service. Formed in 1883 and recognised as one of London’s finest gun makers, William Evans retains its shop at 67A St. James’s Street in Mayfair, London and has now extended the Bisley store to cater for all local needs, particularly as Christmas fast approaches. At its heart is the gun room, with a selection of new and second hand side-by-side and over-and-under shotguns, bolt-action and double rifles from a range of manufacturers. Alongside the well-appointed gun room, the boutique gun maker also stocks a range of cartridges, accessories, clothes and gifts to suit any shooting discipline. The company has a proud history dating back to 1883, and from its early years it soon garnered a reputation for quality and attention to detail – counting members of the aristocracy and ranking officers in the Guards Regiments amongst its earliest clients. As its reputation grew the business attracted the patronage of members of several prestigious gentlemen’s 2 6 NOVEMBER 2 0 1 6
clubs, while it was also proud to list HRH The Duke of Connaught and HRH Prince Arthur of Connaught among its customers. Today, visitors can expect the same high level of service and attention to detail that was so important all those years ago. Alastair Phillips, Manager at William Evans, said: “The business was founded on a reputation for quality and high level craftsmanship at affordable prices – an ethos that still drives us to this day. “Whether you’re just starting out or have been shooting for years, you can be assured of a warm welcome.” Experts are on hand for all customer needs for both guns and accessories. egendary chef Rick Stein ensured the 2016 Guildford Book Festival came to a triumphant close on Sunday (16 October) after a week-long celebration that brought a wealth of top authors and household names to the premier literary event in the South of England. The Festival (9 - 16 October), Paddy Ashdown now in its 27th year, featured 60 authors in a programme of over 50 wonderfully diverse events. More than 6000 tickets were sold throughout the week and an unprecedented number of events sold out this year, making it one of the most successful Guildford festivals ever. Held in 18 venues across the town, the mix of genres included history, literary fiction, autobiography, comedy, food, sport and more. New for 2016 were additional events for budding writers and for children, both proving to be very popular. Amongst the highlights were Jeremy Paxman in conversation with ITV’s Mark Austin to discuss Jeremy’s candid new memoir, A Life in Questions; Robert Harris in conversation with former BBC foreign correspondent and newsreader Michael Buerk to discuss Conclave, Robert’s highly acclaimed new novel; Deliciously Ella founder Ella Mills who shared insight into her healthy-eating philosophy which has amassed a huge online following and has

All About Dr Natalie Blakely Get to know the multi-award winning Medical Director of the Light Touch Clinic.
6 8 NOVEMBER 2 0 1 6
What do you love most about your job as a cosmetic doctor? I strongly believe that cosmetic medicine is about confidence not vanity. How someone looks on the outside can have a massive impact on how they feel on the inside. I love hearing how the treatments at the clinic have restored our patients’ confidence and changed their lives. It is such a rewarding profession. What motivated you to work in aesthetics and establish your own clinic? It was a combination of factors. I was originally interested in establishing my own clinic as I had a young family and I wanted a better work-life balance. I was particularly drawn to aesthetics as it is an area of medicine where you get to spend proper time with patients – I don’t feel rushed. I get to know each of my patients as an individual and feel I can make a big difference to their confidence. What do you think is one of the most exciting innovations in aesthetics at the moment? I think cosmetic treatments which use radiofrequency and ultrasound are really exciting. In the clinic we use ULTRAcel which is fantastic for tightening and lifting the chin and jawline. What I think is great about radiofrequency and ultrasound treatments is that they are pain-free and have no downtime. I really believe that this is where aesthetics should be heading. What have been some of the biggest highlights of your career? In 2012 I won the ‘Rising Star’ award at the Aesthetic Awards which was a massive achievement. This was my first industry award and the competition was incredibly tough! I also won the award for ‘Best Non-Surgical Makeover’ at the MyFaceMyBody awards last year for an INTRAcel acne treatment I did for actress Aisling Knight. I am particularly proud of this award as the judging panel was made up of my peers. Another highlight has been relocating the Light Touch Clinic from Guildford to our larger Weybridge premises. The clinic décor is beautiful and it is equipped with the very best state-of-the-art aesthetic technology.
What are your top 3 skincare tips? Firstly, wash your face properly – not with a makeup wipe! Use a cleanser and follow up with an exfoliator. Takes a little bit longer, but your skin will thank you for it. Avoid prolonged exposure to the sun and always remember to wear SPF, even when it’s cloudy outside. Doing this will minimise sun damage and help look after your skin for the future. Finally, I think it is definitely worthwhile investing in a collagen boosting treatment such as INTRAcel. Using a combination of microneedling and radiofrequency energy, this treatment encourages your skin to produce more collagen and elastin for stronger, youthful skin.
What is one product you wouldn’t be without? I love CULT51 night cream – I am always recommending it to my patients! This clever night cream has 51 skin benefits and you can really see results. The rich formula leaves my skin feeling smooth and nourished.
“I was particularly drawn to aesthetics as it is an area of medicine where you get to spend proper time with patients”

he black stuff is the beauty industry’s hottest ingredient right now, but we’re not talking the same bricks you buy at B&Q. Activated charcoal is produced with a special heating technique that causes the substance to become porous, meaning it can be used to trap chemicals. “The first time I saw charcoal was in a Korean doctor’s consulting room, he used it to purify the air,” says Katalin Berenyi, co-founder of Erborian. “Then I saw it in Korean spas. It lined the ceilings of the steam rooms and was used to trap impurities.” It can do exactly the same for your skin, which is why we’ve seen heaps of new product launches with charcoal featuring high up on the ingredients list.

he Starskin Applicator was inspired by the patting techniques of celebrity make-up artists, using a high-speed pulsating motion to deliver an airbrushed look. To give it a go, I start by squeezing some foundation on the back of my hand before dabbing it with the oval silicone sponge on the applicator, and then positioning the device against my cheek before switching it on. It’s tempting to move it around in circles, like I usually would with a brush, but by gliding it over my face using a sweeping movement, I find I use
up less product but end up with a beautifully even texture on my face. There are two speed settings - I use the slower one on tricky areas around my eyes, nose and chin, and the faster one everywhere else. The pulsating sensation’s really soothing, and my make-up looks so even and toned after using it that friends ask if I’ve invested in a new foundation. The Starskin does take a bit of taking used to, but once you master it, the results are amazing.” Starskin Artist FX Auto-Patting Makeup Applicator, £79.95, available at Harrods (www.harrods.com)

Back in frizz-ness There’s finally some good news for those who spend half their life struggling to control a mass of curly hair... It’s officially back in fashion - and the more natural the better. By Kate Whiting, Press Association
C
urls were out in force at the AW16 shows - from beachy waves to tight ringlets, volume and texture were king - in complete contrast to the sleek, poker straight SS16 look. It’s catching on in Hollywood too, with Mad Men’s Christina Hendricks stepping out at the recent opening of Vivienne Westwood’s Paris store with her flame-red locks tumbling to her shoulders in loose ringlets spirals. It’s about time, says Michele Scott-Lynch, the curly founder of haircare brand Boucleme (www.boucleme. co.uk). “When I was growing up, curly hair was largely ignored by the beauty industry. There was no advice on caring for curls, no curly role models and absolutely zero effective products on the market. Hairdressers would encourage you to straighten it, so you couldn’t even rely on them for tips,” she says. “The internet and social media changed all this: it became a mine of information as curly girls started sharing their daily routines and favourite products, and this strong global curly community just grew and grew.”

TOP TIPS FOR NATURAL CURLS Ready to banish your straighteners and let your barnet bounce free? Here are Michele Scott-Lynch’s top tips on embracing your natural curls... 1. The most important thing is to understand that frizz is a sign your hair lacks moisture - with proper hydration, frizz will transform into a wave/curl. A little bit of frizz is also your friend, as it helps give volume and shape to your curls.
2. Weekly deep conditioning helps boost moisture levels and if curls are dry, try leaving your conditioner in, rather than washing out. This, plus using a non-foaming (paraben and sulphate-free) hair cleanser, can be a game-changer.
3. At night, protect curls by tying them up in a loosely on top of your head. If your hair isn’t long enough, try using a hair net.
4. Sleeping on a silk pillowcase helps prevent frizz due to friction (it’s also great for a line-free face in the morning!).
5. Find a hairdresser who specialises in curls; they’ll have a greater understanding of the best products to use and how to dry/ style your hair. Curly hair is best cut dry, when you can see where the curls sit naturally. When wet, curly hair stretches and it’s harder to work out the natural spring factor. If a hairdresser mentions razoring your hair to lose bulk, run a mile. Fortunately, there are more and more curly hairstylists popping up. I go to a lady called Lindsey Hughes ‘Curl Whisperer’ (www.lindseyhughescurl whisperer.co.uk).

BEAUTIFUL KITCHENS FROM
T
he third-generation family firm has been dealing with materials, forms and design for more than 80 years. This combination of tradition and craftsmanship is the basis for a their, timeless kitchen architecture, which combines elegant materials with a selfcontained design language and intelligent functionality. Kitchens with a strong character and lasting perfection are created with responsibility and passion at the company’s headquarters in St. Martin, Upper Austria, where Steininger was founded
ROCK
A joint design by Martin Steininger and Alberto Minotti, is a kitchen archipelago consisting of four different blocks, which can be made from a range of the finest stone materials. ROCK can be implemented either as a bold, monolithic island solution, or as an unusual standalone concept comprising four cubes - based on Donald Judd’s art installation “Minimal Myth” - with a few centimetres spacing to each other. Every kitchen is unique - even the inside is individually designed for each custome.. Drawers made of stainless steel and a magnetic, double hand-stitched, felt base are divided up using magnetic dividers and equipped with a wide variety of functional modules. All parts are made from 6 mm thin natural stone with a 45° edge. Featuring a special, patented handle, the kitchen blocks appear to be one single piece.
Pure
PURE
The monolithic kitchen island PURE impresses with clear and precise style. The integrated solid wood table and stainless steel revolving herbs bed are not only functional elements, but also allow PURE’s surface materials to come alive – particularly in combination with concrete. The 8 mm thin concrete is heat-resistant and food-safe. We developed a procedure that allowed us to make the conrete so thin that it was light enough but not brittle, and maintain its interesting surface texture with fine cracks and bubbles“, says Steininger. What the unusual outer skin of the kitchen promises, is also delivered in the top-quality interior, made of stainless steel and the finest wood. As with all STEININGER kitchens, reduction down to the essentials and visual order are part of the concept.
Slim
SLIM
The elegant kitchen island SLIM fully follows the trend of using extraordinary materials in the kitchen. The unit block and cupboard element are fully clad in anodised aluminium. Austrian workmanship comes into effect in the carefully crafted wine racks and the unusual sliding mechanism of SLIM. Steininger exercised its usual quality in getting down to work on the new SLIM. The aluminium parts are processed with engineering precision. The gap dimensions of the fronts match, in their precision, those found in vehicle manufacturing. To replace and adjust the aluminium parts, Steininger used a patented procedure for the first time to enable an even more precise execution. Thanks to the new processing method, the feel of the aluminium parts is especially pleasant, smooth and silky. “The aim was to produce an even more robust and long-lasting surface. The outer skin of the new SLIM consists of 3 mm thick, massive aluminium. With the newly developed folding technology,we can use it on flat surfaces and fold around corners”, says Steininger. Blackcurrant Beauty Clean lines and sharp design create sophistication in this Surrey kitchen
Charlie Davies Photography
D
aunted by the prospect of moving house, this Walton couple with a school-aged son contacted Kate Diss at Sanctuary Kitchens. “They were happy with where they lived for the past nine years, with lovely neighbours and their son settled in a nearby school so wanted to look at the space they had and see how this could work better for their changing lifestyle,” recalls Kate. One of their main concerns was the dining room - they simply didn’t use it due to having a garden room where they had their dining table. “The brief was to open up the downstairs area and incorporate the unused dining room as well as upgrading the family bathroom and downstairs cloakroom too. They wanted clean lines and a sharp contemporary design. Sanctuary Kitchens and Bathrooms was their one stop shop for everything they needed,” she explains.
Layout The couple already had a builder assigned so Sanctuary was happy to provide the builder with all the necessary paperwork and electrical details to liaise with the build during the installation. “The decision to remove the dividing wall resulted in additional space to introduce an island,” explains Kate.
Cabinetry “We designed reflective high gloss white units with the integral capped handle, all made to our specification,” explains Kate. “This meant that we weren’t limited to set sizes and were able to order lots of deep drawers for crockery and pans, ensuring that everything was stored away and tidy.” Units feature a combination of storage solutions, so that the countertops can be kept clutter free. 8 2 NOVEMBER 2 0 1 6
Surfaces “We used a 30mm Nero Zimbabwe granite worktop throughout the kitchen and chose a statement blackcurrant toughened glass splash back to give the kitchen its ‘wow’ factor!” says Kate.
Appliances The client was a keen cook and his priority was to include a Fisher and Paykel American fridgefreezer with icemaker and a Fisher and Paykel range cooker. The integrated Miele appliances in the form of washer dryer, dishwasher and microwave kept everything hidden away from sight. The Miele Extractor, stylish, quiet and extremely effective was a perfect choice for this family room.
“We designed reflective high gloss white units with the integral capped handle, all made to our specification”
Lighting and accessories “A must for the island was a Sensio pod pullout power socket, providing 3 power sockets and a USB connection. This is a safe option when using small appliances with electrical leads so that the leads don’t get in the way,” explains Kate. We also added one of these into the worktop near the range cooker so to avoid having cut-outs in the glass splash back. LED under lighting was factory fitted into the thickness of the carcase eliminating the need for the addition of any form of pelmet and was paramount in showcasing the stunning blackcurrant splash back. Keep your home happy this winter with a Harvey Water Softener
T
he water that runs through your home is vital to the maintenance of it, impacting everything from your family’s skin, to boiler efficiency. All of this is determined by the area you live in. Rainwater is ‘soft’ but when it flows underground through limestone and chalk it picks up minerals. Hard water then enters your home. Limescale is one of the best insulators and if you live in a hard water area the scale buildup on pipes will prevent the heating system from working as effectively. The most obvious place for this scale is in the kettle, where you can actually see the white residue furring up the heating element. This is happening inside your hot water system too, which results in reduced efficiency, higher energy consumption and maintenance costs.
With soft water

With hard water
With the cold weather approaching it is vital to keep your heating working as efficiently as possible. Your pipes and appliances buildup cm’s worth of scale over the years. Just 1/16 an inch of scale around your boiler’s heating element can increase your fuel costs by 15%. Once a heat source is scaled up it can’t work as efficiently. The introduction of softened water with a Harvey Water Softener will descale pipes and appliances, making them more efficient and longer lasting. As well as limescale being removed from pipes, with softened water, you will notice that it disappears from your surfaces too. You can spend less time cleaning and more time with your feet up! Softened water lathers better with products, so you are left with softer, more manageable skin and hair. Help soothe your skin by reducing the amount of chemical products you use and if you suffer from dry skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis you might see improvements there too. Harvey Bowden started up the business when he and his family suffered the effects of hard water first hand, the product you see today has been tested and adapted to be at the forefront of innovation. The UK’s number one twintank cylinder design has been developed in the local factory in Old Woking, Surrey to work with British plumbing systems and fit neatly under the kitchen sink. Harvey’s vision of having softened water in every home grows closer; “every home in the UK would benefit from a water softener, if it makes sense for one person, then it makes sense for everybody. Water is used everyday and softened water does any job better than hard water”. Book a survey or ask for a quote by calling 01483 670498 or visit harvey.co.uk

REDUCING YOUR CARBON FOOTPRINT

As more of us begin to worry about our carbon footprint, employers and householders are increasingly realising that “sustainability” is becoming a very hot topic in both the working environment and the home.

ark Austin, Sales & Marketing Director for leading home improvement specialists Hazlemere Windows, whose Head Office is in High Wycombe in Bucks says “This is a subject that is growing in importance to employers. Thinking more about the future today is now an essential part of the planning process for businesses, as it can affect staff productivity, if the right impression is not given in the workplace.” As Mark says, “with the majority of us in the UK being householders we all realise the importance of protecting the environment for future generations, but thinking “green” at work will improve a company’s image, reduce its operating costs and impact positively on productivity

with a happier, healthier workforce. Plus there is 100% enhanced capital allowance in the first tax year on investments in energy saving equipment.” Some simple steps can help greatly with reducing energy usage. Use high efficiency fluorescent lights; more of the consumed energy is converted to usable light and less to heat, which also means less work for air conditioning units. Dimmable and individual controls help to reduce unnecessary usage, or consider automatic switching by movement sensor in open plan areas where practical. You can also lower energy use by making the most of the natural light available, rather than relying totally on artificial lighting. Having well insulated windows and doors can make a vast difference to any premises as each part of a window
and/or door contributes to its overall insulation, dependent on their quality, design of the seals and the thermal performance of the frames and type of double glazed unit. A building prone to heat gain can reduce reliance on the cooling system with the use of specialist paints. You could always go literally “greener”, the right trees and shrubs outside can provide shade for a building where heat gain is a problem and of course indoor plants aids air purification. Often overlooked, yet still an effective measure is to simply check your systems’ timers are adjusted to the optimum for how the building is actually used. Windows and doors that have the largest expanse of glass will naturally allow more light into the home and workplace, and therefore benefit the most from “solar gain”. Heat gained in this way reduces reliance on central heating, reducing both costs and emissions. In 2007, Hazlemere Window Company became the first company in the UK to design, manufacture and install a dual frame aluminium window system that achieved an ‘A’ Window Energy Rating, which was recognised by the Energy Saving Trust, who estimate that up to 20% of energy lost through un-insulated homes is through windows. Hazlemere’s Eco-friendly aluminium windows, apart from having a long life in use, once aluminium reaches the end of its life it can be infinitely recycled, so is highly positive material environmentally. Recycling aluminium uses just 5% of the energy needed to produce the original material, plus the finished product has all of the same qualities as the original, so can be recycled time and again. “Self-cleaning glass” for use on conservatory roofs or roof lantern lights is also beneficial for the environment, as only small amounts of cleaning agents are ever needed. This highly efficient self-cleaning glass called can be combined with other glass products in insulating glass
units to provide benefits such as thermal insulation, noise reduction, solar control and fire protection. In 2015, during their 30th Anniversary, Hazlemere introduced A+ energy rated double glazed UPVC casement windows as standard, plus also can offer a triple glazed A++ energy rated UPVC casement window that has a combined U-Value of 0.99 W/m2K. Such thermally efficient energy saving replacement windows are a great way to save energy and reduce heating bills. Other ways to reduce your carbon footprint include fitting washrooms with efficient low flush toilets, reduced
“A building prone to heat gain can reduce reliance on the cooling system with the use of specialist paints” flow taps and sensor taps to save on water consumption. Purchase energy efficient kitchen equipment as appliances are replaced, and even simpler; avoid overfilling kettles when preparing tea and coffee. Ensure any furniture you purchase is hardwearing and easy to maintain to ensure longevity plus do your bit for the environment/ those less fortunate by donating unwanted furniture, IT equipment and appliances to charity. So don’t be mean “go green”.

Conservation without compromise …
I
f you’re the owner of a period home built between the 1920s and 1940s you may have grown fond of the traditional steel windows commonly fitted to properties at this time. But pretty as they are, these windows come with a host of problems after many years of use – ill-fitting casements, faulty handles, condensation and draughts to name just a few. Often the only solution is to fit new double glazing, but many are wary of the high cost of steel replacement windows or the loss of aesthetic that tends to result from uPVC installations. Help is at hand though in the form of The Conservation Range from the Heritage Window Company, a range of slimline aluminium windows specifically designed to deliver all the benefits of modern double glazing without compromising the character of your property.
“Some friends don’t even notice we’ve had them done, and that’s exactly what we wanted!” The Conservation Range was the result of extensive consultation with conservation officers, and combines ultra-slim aluminium frames allowing the maximum amount of light in, with styling that mimics the minimalist sightlines of steel windows. As Heritage Sales Director, Ben Flatt points out, “Many of our customers want to update their windows, but they don’t want to lose that ‘period’ look.” And one customer recently said, “Some friends don’t even notice we’ve had them done, and that’s exactly what we wanted!” But it’s not all about appearance, the performance is outstanding too. Owners benefit from excellent heat retention and noise reduction as the latest in double glazed sealed units do their job. And an “A” Window Rating mean the Conservation Range meets all new Building 9 0 NOVEMBER 2 0 1 6
Regulations. The multipoint locking system ensures that the windows are secure too, and additional security studs make certain that window casements, once locked in position, cannot be removed from the outside. Cleverly, Heritage frames are designed to fit both direct to brick or stone or into existing timber sub-frames. Thus it’s possible to remove the old metal casements and fit new without the need for extensive redecoration afterwards. If the survey shows that existing timber work is damaged or rotten beyond repair then new frames can be fashioned to match the originals. The frames are finished with a tough powder coated paint and customers can choose from over 200 interior and external colours to complement their chosen décor. Matching traditional handles and peg-stays complete the period effect. The Heritage Window Company has manufactured aluminium windows at its south London factory since 1978 and completed thousands of installations all over the south of England from terraced houses to stately homes. It’s built a reputation for quality products and customer service - windows are installed by directly employed fitters and the company also employs surveyors who carry out pre- and post-installation inspections to make sure that every job meets exacting quality standards. The result is a long list of satisfied customers who are only too happy to refer others, and a growing collection of testimonials which can be viewed at any of its showrooms in Beaconsfield, Dorking, Sevenoaks or Loughton.
