London Antique Rug & Textile Art Fair The next London Antique Rug & Textile Art Fair (LARTA) will take place at an exciting new location, the Battersea Evolution Marquee, also home to the Winter Decorative Antiques & Textiles Fair, in Battersea Park.

L

ARTA provides the UK with its only high-end specialist event to focus on fine antique carpets and textiles for collectors, decorators and trade buyers. LARTA continues to be the only major event in this field, not just in the UK but in Europe too, and as such draws an international clientele. The Fair offers an unparalleled choice to everyone with an interest in woven art, and this year it will be bigger and better than ever, showing the most diverse selection and highest quality to date. The Fair’s spacious new location on the Mezzanine of the Marquee enjoys wonderful views across Battersea Park. Exhibitors are leading specialists in woven works of all periods to the early 20th century, and from across the world. Buyers flock to the Fair to find luxurious antique tapestries and popular embroideries such as suzanis; exotic silks from China and Italy; rugs, kelims and runners from the Middle East, the Caucasus, Persia, India and the Himalayas; specialist textiles including ikat, batik and African tribal cloths; clothing and headwear; ethnic jewellery, and associated works of art. Carpets for sale will date from 18th century rarities to Modernist masterpieces and, for the first time, contemporary hand-woven designer pieces. LARTA introduces several important new participants for 2017 - Liberty – Oriental Carpets, the world-famous department from Liberty of London, will

take part in what will be their first ever fair: they will be launching a new exclusive range of hand-woven silk rugs, while C. John Rare Carpets, doyen of the London trade, veteran of the Grosvenor House Fair, and the only fine carpet gallery to hold a Royal Warrant, will bring important carpets, tapestries and textiles of all periods including Modernist. Also new is Peta Smyth, internationally-renowned expert in European textiles of the 16th to 19th centuries. Turkmen Gallery of Belgravia, and Brian MacDonald Antique Rugs return to the Fair, joining regular exhibitors such as Aaron Nejad, James Cohen Antique Carpets, Owen Parry, Seneh Carpets, Hakiemie Rugs Ltd and Andy Lloyd. “The Organisers of the Decorative Fair have welcomed us as a complimentary event, although LARTA is completely independent,” says Aaron Nejad, LARTA Organiser. “Our successful Virtual Fair, an online viewing gallery that goes live at www.larta.net as the Fair opens, is an excellent resource we will continue to deliver. Dealers post images and details of their best pieces and many buyers have come to purchase at the Fair as a result,” adds Aaron. “We are looking forward to our new space at the Battersea Evolution Marquee alongside the wonderful Decorative Fair.”

Gothic gets a 21 Century restyle at the Winter Decorative Antiques & Textiles Fair

The Winter Decorative Antiques & Textiles Fair starts the New Year with an unusual Foyer display, a 21st Century interpretation of Gothic design - featuring beautiful period examples refreshed by modern styling, including carved and decorated furniture, mirrors and architectural elements, diffused with select 20th century pieces and even a dash of steampunk and elaborate pattern for a contemporary, dramatic spirit.

T

ypical gothic decoration, which should be light and airy in feel, includes the pointed arch and lancet window, slender columns, trefoil and quatrefoil tracery, leaf and fleur-de-lys (and later heraldic) motifs, which appear in English and European interiors from the 13th century onwards. The style has proved enduringly popular, remaining in wide use throughout England to the 16th century, and experiencing revivals in the mid-18th century, the Regency and later Victorian periods, and heavily influencing the Arts & Crafts movement.

The Fair will offer a fresh perspective on how this style – which originated as light, delicate and highly decorated grandeur - can work in new ways for today’s interiors. Taking historic inspiration from Strawberry Hill House (built by Horace Walpole, born 1717) and Jane Austen’s ‘gothic’ novel Northanger Abbey (published 1817), the foyer display of the Winter Fair will weave a gothic-infused fantasy for modern times. Around 145 exhibitors will be taking part, bringing the wonderful range of period design that customers have come to expect, encompassing the practical, the statement piece, the eccentric and the purely elegant. With furniture and objects for sale dating back to the 17th century and up to the 1970s, every era of style and craftsmanship can be found at the Decorative Fair, the go-to event for interior design trade and savvy private buyers hunting the perfect one-off piece. Furniture (fine, formal, country and decorative antique, art deco and mid-century designs) lighting, accessories (mirrors, glassware, ceramics, treen), collectors’ items including fine and vintage couture jewellery, textiles and art of every kind from folk to contemporary can be found. Some of the most influential interior designers shop at the Decorative Antiques & Textiles Fair: Rose Uniacke attends every event and has brought clients such as David and Victoria Beckham; Max Rollit and Edward Hurst the leading international antiques dealers turned decorators are often first in the queue on opening day; Rose Tarlow, US interiors guru to the stars, loves to buy country and folk furniture and naive art; and many UK decorators and trade buyers including Nina

I lost my heart to a starship trooper

GLENN BROWN

at Griffin Gallery until 24th February 2017

Griffin Gallery is delighted to present their spring exhibition, I Lost my Heart to a Starship Trooper, curated by Catherine Loewe and Gallery Director Becca Pelly-Fry.

T

he exhibition explores the idea of mass media, popular culture and venerated Old Masters. It will feature ten London artists; from YBA Gavin Turk, Turner Prize nominee Glenn Brown to Wolfe von Lenkiewicz, whose great-grandfather was the court painter to the Fairy Tale King of Bavaria. The exhibiting artists reimagine Old Masters with a contemporary twist, such as Henry Hudson’s plasticine paintings of Van Gough, and Luke Caufield’s 3D projected sculptures. I Lost my Heart to a Starship Trooper features the artists: Glenn Brown, Gavin Turk, Luke Caulfield, Gordon Cheung, Stephane Graff, Henry Hudson, Nick Hornby and Sinta Tantra, Wolfe von Lenkiewicz and Mariele Neudecker. Catherine Loewe, the curator and London-based art consultant said: ‘The exhibition’s title comes from the 1978 Hot Gossip song of the same name, and also refers to the artist Glenn Brown, who used the title for one of his paintings, a meticulous rendition of a Rembrandt. Through this appropriation, Brown united something old and almost sacred with something modern, and this, in part, was the genesis of the exhibition. While all of the featured works open up myriad lines of inquiry, from challenging notions of value and authorship to examining modern morality, the show is in essence about the artists’ relationship with the art historical canon, from Old Masters to the present.’ The works in the exhibition include both traditional materials and the use of new technologies in a wide variety of media, from plasticine to video projection.

ENTWINED LIVES © TIM LAMAN

Capturing the natural world The Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition is now open at the Natural History Museum, London. The 100 inspiring images tell the story of Earth’s wildlife, from intimate portraits to vast landscapes.

T

his year’s grand title winning image, Entwined lives (above), was taken by field biologist and photojournalist Tim Laman. The young male orangutan’s face shot from above gives a new perspective on the story of Bornean organuatans, and is a reminder of both the beauty and fragility of the natural world. The backdrop is the rich rainforest of the Gunung Palung National Park, in West Kalimantan, one of the few protected orangutan strongholds in Indonesian Borneo. The orangutan has returned to feast on the crop of figs. He has a mental map of the likely fruiting trees in his huge range, and he has already feasted here.

Tim knew he would return and, more important, that there was no way to reach the top – no route through the canopy – other than up the tree. But he had to do three days of climbing up and down, by rope, to place in position several GoPro cameras that he could trigger remotely to give him a chance of not only a wide-angle view of the forest below but also a view of the orangutan’s face from above. This shot was the one he had long visualised, looking down on the orangutan within its forest home. Entwined lives is just one of a set of Tim’s images documenting the plight of the organutan that is included in this year’s exhibition. Wild orangutans face a crisis of habitat loss due to agriculture and logging. Combined with increased poaching for the illegal pet trade their future is uncertain. See the 100 award-winning images at the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition at London’s Natural History Museum until 10 September 2017. THE DETAILS For details and to book tickets visit nhm.ac.uk/wpy

Protecting their remaining habitat is critical for orangutans to survive. If we want to preserve a great ape that retains its vast culturally transmitted knowledge of how to survive in the rainforest and the full richness of wild orangutan behaviour, we need to protect orangutans in the wild, now TIM LAMAN 22 JANUARY2017

Modernist photography from The Sir Elton John Collection

Tate Modern, Until 7th May 2017 Open daily 10am – 6pm and until 10pm on Friday and Saturday

Tate Modern presents a major new exhibition, drawn from one of the world’s greatest private collections of photography.

T

his unrivalled selection of classic modernist images from the 1920s to the 1950s features almost 200 works from more than 60 artists, including seminal figures such as Berenice Abbott, André Kertész, Man Ray, Alexandr Rodchenko and Edward Steichen among many others. The exhibition consists entirely of rare vintage prints, all created by the artists themselves, offering a unique opportunity to see remarkable works up close. The quality and depth of the collection allows the exhibition to tell the story of modernist photography in this way for the first time in the UK. It also marks the beginning of a long term relationship between Tate and The Sir Elton John Collection, as part of which Sir Elton and David Furnish have agreed to give important works to the nation. Featuring portraits of great cultural figures of the 20th century, including Georgia O’Keeffe by Alfred Stieglitz, Edward Weston by Tina Modotti, Jean Cocteau by Berenice Abbott and Igor

24 JANUARY2017

Stravinsky by Edward Weston, the exhibition gives insight into the relationships and inner circles of the avant-garde. An incredible group of Man Ray portraits are exhibited together for the first time, having been brought together by Sir Elton John over the past 25 years, depicting key surrealist figures such as Andre Breton and Max Ernst alongside artists including Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso and Dora Maar. As life underwent rapid changes in the 20th century, photography offered a new means to communicate and represent the world. Alexandr Rodchenko, László Moholy-Nagy and Margaret Bourke-White employed the ‘worm’s eye’ and ‘bird’s eye’ views to create new perspectives of the modern metropolis - techniques associated with constructivism and the Bauhaus. A dedicated section of the exhibition looks at the new approaches that emerged in capturing the human form, highlighted in rare masterpieces such as André Kertész’s Underwater Swimmer,

Hungary 1917, while Imogen Cunningham’s Magnolia Blossom, Tower of Jewels 1925 and Tina Modotti’s Bandelier, Corn and Sickle 1927 feature in a large presentation dedicated to the Still Life. The Radical Eye: Modernist Photography from the Sir Elton John Collection is curated by Shoair Mavlian with Simon Baker and Newell Harbin, Director of The Sir Elton John Photography Collection. The exhibition is accompanied by an exclusive audio tour of the exhibition featuring commentary from Sir Elton John, and a major new catalogue from Tate Publishing including an interview with Sir Elton John by Jane Jackson. For 2017, more clubs will be invited to display a range of models, while top classic dealers will be on hand with mouth-watering machinery for sale.

The Royal Warrant holders From piano tuners to opticians to a whip maker, the Royal Warrant holders belong to a very special club.

T

he history of the Royal Warrant can be traced back to medieval times, when competition for Royal favour was intense and the Monarch had the pick of the country's best tradespeople. By the 15th century, the Lord Chamberlain, as head of the Royal Household, formally appointed tradespeople with a Royal Warrant of Appointment – a practice that continues to this day. A Royal Warrant of Appointment – A crest that states "By Appointment To…" is a mark of recognition of those who have supplied goods or services to the Households of HM The Queen, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh or HRH The Prince of Wales for at least five years, and who have an ongoing trading arrangement. The Monarch decides who may grant Royal Warrants. These are known as the Grantors: HM

32 JANUARY2017

The Queen, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh and HRH The Prince of Wales. Today there are around 850 Royal Warrant holders representing a huge cross-section of trade and industry, from individual craftspeople to global multi-nationals. They are united by a commitment to the highest standards of service, quality and excellence. Almost all Warrant holders are members of the Association. There are silversmiths and jewellers, champagne houses and wine merchants, wheelwrights and gun-makers, glovemakers, luxury car manufacturers, tailors and kiltmakers - the kind of luxury brands befitting of a royal family who reside in palaces and castles. Some firms have a record of Royal warrants reaching back over more than 100 years. Warrant-holding firms do not provide their goods or services free to the Royal households, and all transactions are conducted on a strictly commercial basis. Chocolatier Prestat was the last warrant holder to be appointed by the Queen Mother - who loved their chocolate mint fondants and violet cremes - in 1999. To apply for a Royal Warrant, a company must

have been doing business with the household for at least five years. If they are successful, they can advertise the fact by displaying the Queen’s coat of arms. “The Royal Warrant is the ultimate seal of approval,” says Roger Gadd of whip maker Swaine Adeney Brigg. “Our customers definitely take note of it, which is good for business.” But a Warrant also carries with it responsibilities. Beholders must exercise discretion, and make it their duty not to let standards slip. “Royal warrants don't just cover what the Royal Family needs, but what a business needs, so there are agricultural and engineering service suppliers, as well as the technology that supports a large business," says Richard Peck, secretary of the Royal Warrant Holders Association.

Prestigious Royal Warrant Holders in London include: Asprey Berry Bros & Rudd Ltd Cartier Elizabeth Arden Fortnum & Mason Jeeves of Belgravia Champagne Bollinger Gieves & Hawkes Holland & Holland Jeroboams The Ritz Hotel THE DETAILS For more information about Royal Warrant holders visit www.rwha.co.uk

BONHAMS Travel and exploration auction Bonhams to sell uncensored First Edition of 1907 Shackleton Book First ever published in Antarctic

A very rare copy of Aurora Australis- the first book to be published and printed on the Antarctic continent is the centrepiece of a wealth of remarkable documents and memorabilia relating to the British Antarctic explorer, Sir Ernest Shackleton, to be offered at Bonhams Travel and Exploration sale in London on 1 February. One of only 90 copies, it is estimated at £25,000-35,000.

T

he book, containing poems, stories and essays by the men of the 1907 British Antarctic Expedition, was printed on the spot using equipment brought from England by the expedition leader, Ernest Shackleton. His aim was to help the team while away the time during the dark winter months. Only 80 copies of Aurora Australis were brought back from the Antarctic in 1909 when the expedition ended but this volume is particularly rare because it is from the very first, uncensored, state of the book. The first state contains the full version of an essay which humorously – and under a thin disguise – criticised five wealthy men who had refused to sponsor the expedition. Fearing the consequences for future funding if this became public, Shackleton ordered the offending page to be removed and replaced by an illustrated

36 JANUARY2017

plate. A very few copies, however, slipped through the net. The book for sale is one of those rare, TRAVEL & uncensored, volumes. EXPLORATION Printing the books was a laborious process. AUCTION The printing press, type, ink, paper and 1st February 2017 engraving tools were brought from England. Bonhams, Montpelier The ink had to be heated by candles and the Street, Knightsbridge, SW7 1H printing done at night while most of the men H were sleeping to minimise the vibrations Specialist: Matthew Ha ley caused by movement. Printing a leaf on both Head of Fine Books , sides would often take up to a day. and Manuscripts Included with the book is a copy of the printed menu for a mid-winter dinner which took place at 23 June 1908 at Shackleton's Winter Quarters at Cape Royds' hut, East Antarctica (the Antarctic winter of course coinciding with the British summer). On the menu were Penguin Patties, Seal Cutlets, champagne, whisky and "MORE WHISHKY!!!!!?". Shackleton's privately financed British Antarctic Expedition of 1907-1909 was also known as the Nimrod expedition after the name of its ship. The copy of Aurora Australis and the menu were owned by Henry J.L. Dunlop (1876-1931), Chief Engineer on the Nimrod and have been in the family ever since. THE DETAILS

London’s mainline stations to become luxury home hotspots Huge regeneration programmes are revitalising some of London’s mainline stations as plans are unveiled for thousands of new homes, shopping centres and commercial space.

N

ot since the great Victorian railway era have mainline stations been such important commercial zones - and such desirable places to live. Here are just a few hotspots... KING'S CROSS Twenty years ago it was a red light district, now 67 acres of what was industrial land behind the station, form a stunning urban quarter with 2,000 luxury homes, Google’s European HQ, a University of the Arts London campus, a Jamie Oliver cookery school - to be launched - and a piazza that’s a field of fountains and attractive wooden benches. Following the release of

44 JANUARY2017

luxury flats built within the framework of listed gasholders, it sees the launch of Fenman House, a 14-storey tower and linked podium building with 75 flats priced from £655,000. Call Knight Frank on 020 3691 3969. VICTORIA A blighted island site opposite Victoria station is being turned into Nova - five fresh buildings including a block of 172 apartments, all part of a £2 billion project sweeping away the grey-slab office buildings that have dominated the area for decades. LONDON BRIDGE London Bridge station is being completely rebuilt. The Shard has helped catapult the area to a new level. The main challenge now is to integrate the contemporary tower with its surrounding streets, including medieval lanes and passageways. London Bridge Quarter is the name of the wider development zone. Regeneration has involved cutting new viaducts through ancient Borough Market and improving street-level space for stallholders and shoppers. Derelict

railway arches along Crucifix Lane are being opened up to provide links with Hay’s Galleria Wharf overlooking the Thames. Snowsfields Yard is a stylish scheme of 28 new apartments just moments from the Shard. Prices from £765,000. Call Crest Nicholson on 020 3002 7009. LONDON WATERLOO A City Hall vision for a revitalised quarter surrounding Waterloo station is also coming to fruition. This includes a part-demolition of the Shell Centre buildings and bulldozing a run-down strip along York Road. Thirty Casson Square, the second phase of the 790-home Shell Centre project has been launched, with two-bedroom flats from £1.2 million. Call 020 7001 3600. The sprawling station complex extends to 24½ acres and is home to the disused Eurostar terminal, which is to be revived for commuter services and a shopping mall. Dover House, a former hotel and restaurant in Lower Marsh, which has a street market and attracting more upmarket shops and boutiques, has been refurbished and split into nine rental apartments. Call Savills on 020 3430 6870.

Get Ready for the UK’s Most Exciting Theme Park

From Bear Grylls adrenalin adventures to pampering spa treatments on one site Forget Disney or Universal. Post Brexit, stay-cations are the new normal. And the 2017 professional family expects a lot more from their leisure time. Our appetite for adventure is ravenous. We need an escape from the pressures of work and school. Hand-in-hand is a desire for holistic health and the inner peace it brings. Using the family holiday as a time of strengthening relationships, even healing rifts brought on by the relentless stress of everyday life.

I

s it asking too much to achieve both goals during one holiday? Not any more. The UK’s most exciting new theme park in a generation has just been launched. Set in 485 acres of the beautiful Afan Valley in South Wales, this new concept combines the beauty of hills and forests with the accessibility that comes with being just ten minutes from the M4. Already in the top ten global venues for mountain biking, the area’s reputation for adventure is about to explode. The park will feature 40 adrenalin-fuelled activities designed by the Bear Grylls Survival Academy. Names like Sheer Drop, Leap of Faith and Canyon Crossing give you a flavour. Or you can spend the day in the water slides and plunge pools of the aquatic centre, cycle or ramble round the mountains and valleys or undergo extreme pampering in the 5 star spa. When the day’s action is done, the Central Hub area will come alive with street parties, live music, parades and a tough decision on whether to eat out in one of the restaurants or have a family dinner in the luxury lodge. Ah, yes,

46 JANUARY2017

the lodges. Did I mention that you can own the cabin you stay in, with all the facilities you’d expect in a permanent holiday home? One to four bedrooms, fully fitted kitchen, utility room, en-suite master bedroom, hot tub and decking. And a 50 year warranty, five times as long as you get on a new brick-and-mortar property. As a lodge owner you receive a whopping 8% per annum rental income and 14 days of family use in this year-round resort. Lodges range from £149,000 to £259,000, with a 50% initial deposit, 25% in August 2017 and the balance due when your lodge is delivered in late 2018/early 2019. The 8% payments start as soon as your deposit and paperwork is received, reducing the amount of the final payment. The team behind this landmark project have just pulled off a major coup. They’ve recruited as their new chairman Peter Moore OBE, the former Managing Director of Center Parcs and Marketing Director of Alton Towers. Here’s what Peter has to say about this unique development “It's an exciting concept, with many similarities to, yet very different from Center Parcs, in its core offer. It does, however, require a similar skillset to turn it into an exciting guest experience and having done it before, I am convinced an offer of this type is absolutely right for the marketplace.” Reservations are now being taken for the first phase of the project, with some excellent plots near the Central Hub being snapped up by families who want to combine the unique experience of regular retreats to the countryside with an investment that pays passive income for years to come. Elite Investor Club can provide you with full information and access to the episode of Sky TV’s Make Your Money Work programme in which the project is featured. LUXURY WEDDING GUIDE

Planning your dream wedding

Where to start...

Congratulations on your engagement! Once you have named the date and are ready to start planning for your big day, here are some helpful tips to guide you through the initial steps. TALK TO YOUR PARTNER Have a conversation about what you and your partner want. Do you wish to have a huge, grand affair or something small and intimate? Do you want to be married in a church, registry office or on the beach in an exotic destination? This conversation will be the foundation for everything else. It will be one of your first conquests as an engaged couple. START A SCRAPBOOK OR MOOD BOARD Whenever you see something you like, add it to the collection. It could be a hair style, a dream dress or simply a colour swatch. It will help you to visualise what you would like your day to look like and can also be an easy way to eliminate ideas along the way. START SCOUTING LOCATIONS Do you want the ceremony and reception to be at the same venue? A beachy wedding, somewhere in the forest or a modern and chic venue? The options are limitless, so choose what works for the both of you. Once you have found the perfect location, you can pay the initial deposit to secure the date. You also need to decide whether you want a sit-down meal or a buffet. SET A BUDGET You might want the lavish, extravagant event you dreamed of since you were a child, but it is always sensible to set a budget however high. SELECT A THEME A theme could be a colour, a style or an era. Once you have that theme it will make it easier to decide between different options going forward. THINK ABOUT YOUR BRIDAL PARTY Bridesmaids, maid of honour, the best man, flower girls and page boys. 50 JANUARY2017

How many? And who? Think carefully as to who you would like in your party, without upsetting anyone. START THINKING ABOUT YOUR DRESS Go into wedding dress shopping with an open mind. You might love a photo of a dress in a magazine only to try it on and not feel comfortable in it. Give every style a try, you could be surprised which cut flatters and gives you that wow factor! It can be an exhausting process, so only shop for as long as you are enjoying it or break it up over a few trips to make sure it doesn’t become a chore. CAPTURING THE DAY Look around for professional photographers with a portfolio that suits the style you like. It’s a good idea to meet them, often photographers will be there long before the first guest arrives and won’t leave your side until the last guest leaves, so it’s essential that you get on well. THE CAKE AND THE CARS Recommendations for your wedding cake would be ideal, but most wedding cake makers should be able to provide a small sample to help you decide. As for the cars, would you prefer a limo or a horse drawn carriage? Travel in style with what suits you. START A GUEST LIST This will be an organic document that will change many times during your planning process, so don’t be too quick to lock it in. Factors like venue capacity, access and ability to travel and cost will all come into play . Write everyone down at first and then you can work with your partner to refine it closer to the time to send out invitations. ENTERTAINMENT Would you prefer a live band, or a DJ? or both? If you can get recommendations it would be valuable. If not, you need to see them in action before you book them! You might also want to add some entertainment to keep children amused, while you and your guests can enjoy the celebrations without having to worry too much about bored or misbehaving little ones. Remember, this is you and your partner’s day to celebrate your love for one another, so don’t worry too much about pleasing everybody else.

ecognised as one of the most beautiful cities in the world, Bath is the only city in Britain to enjoy UNESCO World Heritage status. It is the perfect location for a wedding, with its stylish combination of beautiful architecture, breath-taking scenery and luxurious accommodation. Only 90 minutes from London, Bath is both an exceptional and accessible city. Bath’s Historic Venues are integral to the city’s history and include some of the country’s most iconic buildings:

ROMAN BATHS & PUMP ROOM Situated at the heart of the World Heritage site, the Roman Baths and Pump Room is without doubt one of the most distinctive and unique buildings in the country. Not only is there nothing like it in the world, it also provides a fantastic opportunity to be married in the open air, but remain under cover, safe from the unpredictable British weather. The Great Bath continually flows with naturally hot water which rises up bubbling from deep underground, warmed by the heat of the earth’s core. Surrounding the ancient baths is 2000 year old paving, where couples can exchange their vows amid the flickering torchlight and rising steam. Beyond the classical statues on the Terrace above, Bath Abbey will be illuminated whilst guests can gather and enjoy a stunning and atmospheric wedding. The grand Pump Room, built in the 1790s was the focal point of Georgian society and Jane Austen observed people and fashions from within the building. This elegant room is now a prestigious event space and a perfect location to continue celebrations, with a seated wedding breakfast and dancing. There is a choice of rooms, and the venue can cater for intimate groups as well as much larger wedding parties for up to 200 guests. ASSEMBLY ROOMS The Assembly Rooms is one of Bath’s most prestigious venues and has been at the heart of the city’s social life since the 18th century. 58 JANUARY2017

I know everyone says it’s the best day of their lives, but it was and this is down to the beautiful venue, amazing staff and perfect food. You don’t deliver a wedding; you deliver an experience of a lifetime! GEMMA DAVIDSON

With stunning crystal chandeliers and impressive architecture, it has everything necessary for a stylish city wedding. There are four inter connecting rooms of varying size providing versatile space for weddings with 50-300 guests. Searcys, our esteemed in-house caterer at the Pump Room and Assembly Rooms, have an enviable reputation. Since 1847, they have been one of the UK’s most prestigious catering companies. With a passion for quality and an ability to execute an event to the very highest standards, they have developed a world-famous reputation for catering and hospitality at their iconic, exclusive venues which include Blenheim Palace, the Gherkin and St Pancras Grand. The

Ultimate Honeymoon to the world’s ten most romantic destinations - £68,500

Hawaii VeryFirstTo exclusively presents an opportunity of a lifetime This exceptional amorous adventure features locations which have earned a place in the top ten of the most romantic destinations in the world, as voted by VeryFirstTo’s worldwide members. Research was conducted on behalf of Hurlingham Travel in order to establish which luxury destinations should appear in their truly remarkable trip.

Y

ou will spend a considerable amount of time in Italy, which, thanks to the seductive appeal of Venice, Florence, and Rome, must be acknowledged as the world’s most romantic country, as well as in seven other destinations where love is constantly in the air. You will be staying at the most romantic and luxurious hotels and greeted by the sound of love songs in each with a petal-filled bath surrounded by scented candles on offer. You will also enjoy the finest quality tours at each destination each invariably ending in a candle-lit dinner at the finest restaurant in the area. The survey asked participants: “Which destination is the most romantic in the world?” Whilst Paris has consistently topped previous surveys, Venice has eclipsed it thanks to its über evocative gondola rides, stirring opera, lavish baroque buildings and dreamy bridges, canals and piazzas. It is no accident that this city is home to Casanova, one of the world’s most famous lovers. Those surveyed were also especially influenced by the iconic monuments, beautiful architecture and mouth-watering food of Paris; the exquisite multi-coloured cliffs of Santorini; and the white sands, swaying palms and crystal blue waters of The Maldives. A donation of £1,000 is made to The Prince’s Trust charity when a trip is purchased. The trip can commence at any time from Feb 14th 2017 and lasts 30 nights. HOLIDAYS & TRAVEL

This winter’s hottest

Holiday Destinations With the cold months of UK winter upon us, we all dream of warm and sunny climates. If you’re looking to escape the bitter, cold weather and indulge in some winter sun, you’ll want to check out some of these destinations and leave the cold behind you. COSTA RICA With a coastline facing both the Caribbean Sea and Pacific Ocean, Costa Rica is an ideal destination for some winter sun. Misty waterfalls, rugged rainforest, exotic wildlife, deserted beaches and adventures abound. Try kayaking, white water rafting or scuba diving, or simply sit back and relax. MOZAMBIQUE The Quirimbas archipelago off the coast of northern Mozambique mingles 34 islands, many of which are uninhabited, with the Indian Ocean. Sand bars, coral reefs and mangroves make this area rich with marine life, and snorkelling and sea-kayaking are ideal pursuits. BORACAY, PHILIPPINES Surfers have been keeping Boracay their little secret for years, but a new airport on the island means Boracay is now easier to get to. Less than an hour from capital Manila, and quieter than some of the larger islands, Boracay has endless stretches of white sand beaches, and a new hotel designed by Philippe Starck and John Hitchcox make this the perfect time to go. 76 JANUARY2017

INDIA If you’ve seen the film of The Jungle Book, starring Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson, you might want to visit India. Writer Rudyard Kipling was inspired by the Madhya Pradesh landscape in central India where you can try and spot a wild Bengal tiger for yourself in one of the area's national parks. SEYCHELLES Long known for their breathtaking beach beauty and opulent marine life, the 115 islands of the Seychelles provide postcardperfect solace from a dismal winter. With six marine national parks protecting turtles, spinner dolphins and over a thousand fish species, it is a scuba diver’s dream. NEPAL Warm weather and clear skies make winter the ideal time to take in the incredible mountain vistas of Annapurna and Everest on a trekking holiday. Visit the Kathmandu Valley, which has the largest concentration of UNESCO heritage sites in the world, many of which had to undergo serious restoration projects after earthquake damage. There are also many picturesque villages to visit along the way.

Swimway: A NEW CONCEPT IN

SWIMMING EDUCATION

S

wimWay is the leading home visit Swimming School in London. Since 2005, the company has developed a reputation for providing high quality swimming lessons for parents & babies, children and adults. Locations include exclusive private developments, homes, schools and gyms around London, as well as 11 sites open to general public. Because SwimWay specialises in private or semiprivate lessons, the children receive full, direct support inside the water from their teacher. This allows them to use only a kickboard as a floatation device without sacrificing any safety measures. Other swim schools often use backpacks, shark wings and noodles which inevitably delay the learning process. A good programme will work on fundamentals such as breath control, buoyancy, body position, gliding and correct leg kick action before introducing the full stroke. Students that are given the correct core elements will thrive, and become good swimmers. The majority of SwimWay swimming lessons are provided as one-to-one, or as semi-private classes. This allows the instructor to

82 JANUARY2017

create a specific lesson plan for each student. Other swimming schools have to follow a generalised swimming plan due to the high student/teacher ratio, and the number of students taught per week. The SwimWay programme has been developed inserting a combination of skills obtained from many countries throughout the world, including Australia, New-Zealand, USA, South Africa and Brazil, to provide you or your child with the best swimming lessons in London. The most important aspects of the classes are the lesson quality, teachers’ enthusiasm, and the methodology that has been developed and implemented. Of course, the environment and water quality/temperature also play an enormous factor in students’ progress. The swimming programme that SwimWay has created enables all the students to develop and practice key techniques and skills, progressing as stroke and skill competency is achieved. The technology used for booking and assessments allows the instructors to continually assess all students to ensure they are progressing through the programme. This system also allows clients to

register and view this progression from home. The SwimWay team has a huge base of knowledge and experience of which they are incredibly proud. All instructors undergo constant training and development, ensuring they are the best they can be when it comes to health and safety, and teaching techniques. This enables SwimWay to provide you with fantastic swimming lessons that are also safe, and lots of fun! SwimWay have a number of swimming pools located in London: • Kensington High Street • Putney • Kew Gardens • East Sheen • Bloomsbury • Wimbledon / Southfields • Mandarin Oriental Hotel • Balham • Wandsworth Common For further information please email info@swimway.co.uk, telephone the SwimWay offices on 0208 871 3972 or visit their website at www.swimway.co.uk

‘Little people day nursery knew they were good, but how did they become

‘OUTSTANDING?”

This was a question posed after the last Ofsted inspection at Little People of Fulham. Like many nursery managers, Jane Gleasure concentrated on the “foundations…which lay with the quality of staff and their skills” focusing on keeping them motivated, well qualified, develop in-house and external training, regular team meetings and following best practice.

J

ane believes you can see the improvements in the happy contented children at play. Recent achievements such as achieving Bronze & Silver awards by the Healthy Early Years Partnership and the Millie’s mark for excellence in First Aid training and practice result from inspirational and passionate leadership. All settings will follow the Early Years Foundation stages of learning, but inspectors are looking for the children to be truly engaged with the learning process. Much of this you can see in the children’s work, development folders or on the display boards. One recent practical improvement

90 JANUARY2017

by Dawn Cove at Little People of Willow Vale was the introduction of “Forest School’- trips in wellies and wet weather gear, to local parks to see and learn about the natural environment, taking calculated risks like climbing trees, identifying birds and insects. Children make their own decisions about their play and their environment in an adventures way. School trips to the local farm, fire stations, local markets and a small children’s theatre excite not just the children but energise staff too. At this age learning is fun and the Montessori method of teaching helps “Children learn their early number, writing and reading skills brilliantly. They are extremely well prepared for their next stage of learning”. Ofsted 2016. What must never be lost is putting the children first. Safeguarding policies and procedures together with regular reviews and training ensure that an Outstanding nursery’s primary focus is always the children in their care. Girls Enjoying Success... ...is ingrained in Channing School’s ethos. For over 130 years, Channing has been successfully educating girls in Highgate.

W

e caught up with Headmistress Barbara Elliott, who has been at the helm of Channing during an ambitious £13million building programme, which includes a bespoke Sixth Form Centre, a state of the art Music School, Sports Centre with gym and an extended Dining Room. The last piece in the puzzle is a Performing Arts Building, with 300-seater Theatre, due to open in 2017. As the Admissions process for 2017 is well underway, we asked Barbara to give us some insights into the school’s success and how parents can best support their daughters in the run up to joining a new school.

Q WHAT IS THE ONE THING

PARENTS SHOULD DO FOR THEIR DAUGHTERS TO HELP THEM SUCCEED?

“Make sure they are "ready to learn".... this means making sure they are well-fed, well-rested, well-exercised. It also helps if they have observed the value their parents place on a good education by seeing intellectual curiosity in action... learning, reading, thinking deeply and enjoying the experience. Model the behaviours you want to nurture in your daughters. If you'd rather spend all evening looking at a screen, why would/should she want to read a book, play an instrument, engage in discussion?”

Q GOOD ADVICE! AND WHAT IS THE ONE THING PARENTS SHOULDN'T DO?

94 JANUARY2017

“Alleviate their boredom. One or two out of school clubs/classes/teams is fine - it teaches them about commitment, teamwork and tenacity, but overstimulation stifles creativity. Give them time and space to just.... be.”

Q YOU PRIDE YOURSELF ON SPOTTING POTENTIAL IN GIRLS WHO APPLY TO CHANNING.WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER TO BE THE MOST COMMON PERSONALITY TRAITS OF A CHANNING GIRL? “Intellectual curiosity, and kindness.”

Q HOW IS CHANNING PREPARING GIRLS TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN THE FUTURE?

“By prioritising creativity, resilience, flexibility and collaboration. (And kindness. And fun!)”

Q WHAT, DO YOU THINK, IS THE

MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION PARENTS SHOULD BE ASKING DURING THE PROCESS OF LOOKING FOR A SCHOOL FOR THEIR DAUGHTER?

“What values do I want my daughter to have and will they be fostered here?” THE DETAILS For more information about Channing School, please visit www.channing.co.uk Or contact the Registrar, Maureen McHarg, on 020 8340 2328 for all enquiries. Channing School The Bank, Highgate, London N6 5HF

We care for each other The Hampshire School, Chelsea

Situated in the impressive former grade II listed Chelsea Library, The Hampshire School has been an enduring presence in the neighbourhood, providing education for boys and girls from early years up to grade eight examinations.

T

he school was founded in Surrey in 1944 by June Hampshire who set the school up to educate her daughter, award winning actress Susan Hampshire who had dyslexia, as there was little recognition of this or support during this time. The school then moved to Kingsbridge in 1946 to St Saviour’s Hall, before relocating to Manresa Road, Chelsea. Early Years is housed nearby at Wetherby Place in Chelsea, and was founded on the principles of accessible education; as well as an emphasis on and passion for dance and the arts. It benefits from a central London location, where the children have access to a huge number of galleries and museums, which they take trips to on a regular basis. The school’s head is Mr Donal Brennan,

96 JANUARY2017

who continues to maintain the schools ethos ‘We care for each other’ to this day. Mutual respect is palpable throughout the school, as well as a continued passion for dance, music and reading. The school prides itself on the fact that any child, regardless of their gender, is encouraged to take up anything that interested them, from ballet to football and everything in-between. The Hampshire School has a strong success record with the 11+ and 13+ exams and their children take up places in the UK’s top independent schools including Dulwich College, City of London, St Paul’s, Francis Holland and Godolphin & Latymer. environment that ensures that their needs are fully met. While our intention is to enable your child to re-join mainstream education as quickly as possible, our provision now offers the possibility of remaining in our school to undertake the first major examinations that a pupil will face. Many of our alumni have enjoyed great success at GCSE and A-Level and they have progressed to top universities and have successful careers in a range of professions.

A truly holistic approach to educating children

F

ulham Prep School celebrated its twentieth anniversary in the summer. It now has over 650 pupils on the roll. The school’s success means that opportunities for its pupils have grown enormously and it now offers a truly holistic approach to educating children. In both the Pre-Prep and Prep schools the children are encouraged to develop passions and interests through an array of clubs and activities which balances their academic endeavours. Music, drama, art and sport are all viewed as important pursuits; the school recently acquired the use of sports pitches in Acton to enhance the team games. The School was taken over by Inspired in 2014 following an “Outstanding” Ofsted inspection. Inspired is a global group which educates over 15,000 pupils in Europe, Africa and Australia. Recently Fulham Prep School released news that it is to open its own senior school which will give pupils an opportunity to stay within the family of schools through GCSEs and A Levels. Importantly the Prep School will continue its tradition of preparing children for entry into the top London Day Schools and National Boarding Schools. This tradition revolves around sending children to the “right” school; one in which the child will thrive, feel challenged but not be overwhelmed. In this way Fulham Prep School has developed strong links with over thirty senior schools. The new Senior School will give parents and pupils yet another option. It will also take in external candidates thus increasing the choice of independent secondary schools in West London. The school will, like the Prep School, strive for academic and all-round excellence. INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS GUIDE

The future landscape of learning at Windlesham House School Windlesham’s educational landscape has changed dramatically over recent years and technology has become a major driver of this change. They are now able to use these tools to create, as part of their learning, like they have never been able to before - this truly is a great and exciting time to be involved in education.

A

t Windlesham, a real emphasis has been placed on developing the students into responsible, effective and creative users of technology. Windlesham would like to see all learners develop into responsible and effective users of technology who are able to make the right choices. Windlesham believes they can do this through a variety of experiences where students are able to develop their skills of Computer Science, Digital Literacy, Information Technology, Digital Citizenship and effectively using learning technologies. They are basing their technology use and 102 JANUARY2017

choices on the School’s Technology plan, The Road Ahead. Windlesham are using this as a framework which future proofs the technology they have and allows them to stay in touch with the latest developments. Obviously, these changes occur regularly, however, by using their framework, they are able to stay up to date and select the most effective tools for the job. Teaching and learning is, as always, at the heart of all of these decisions at Windlesham.

eaturing iconic fashion photographs, couture garments, wigs, hairpieces and film and audio installations, the exhibition will unveil the little-known creative process behind the craft of hair styling and explore McKnight’s relationships with key, long-term collaborators. Throughout his career, McKnight has worked with the most celebrated image-makers, collaborating with designers, photographers, stylists and make-up artists to create some of the most recognisable images of the past 40 years. He has worked with fashion legends like Karl Lagerfeld and Dame Vivienne Westwood, photographers such as Nick Knight and Patrick Demarchelier, and make-up artists including Mary Greenwell and Val Garland. McKnight has created some of fashion’s most recognisable styles such as Princess Diana’s slicked back bob, Tilda Swinton channeling David Bowie and Kate Moss’ trademark ‘done/undone’ look. He has created over 100 Vogue UK covers and over 190 Vogue covers internationally, and styled models, stars and musicians ranging from Linda Evangelista to Cara Delevingne, Cate Blanchett to Uma Thurman, and Lady Gaga to Björk. LONGFIELD

DERBY

Smart and practical style for shooting enthuisasts We may be reaching the end of the official season but any shooting aficionado is aware that this does not mean the end of working in the field since our four legged friends require year-round training and of course regular exercise to maintain their prowess as effective gun dogs.

W

hether you are out training or participating in a shoot, the correct choice of outerwear is essential if you want to go for your best performance every time. Keeping warm and dry are of course the main priorities but it is also important to find a jacket that enables freedom of movement without generating any sound when the fabric is required to adapt to any changes in body position. All too often, shooting enthusiasts are faced with sacrificing silence for a heavy duty, waterproof coat but with Baleno - specialists in high performance country clothing - you can have the best of both worlds and all delivered with effortless style. The Baleno Derby jacket provides the ultimate solution, combining noiseless fabric with superior protection from the elements (all Baleno jackets undergo stringent testing to ensure they 110 JANUARY2017

are suited to the most challenging outdoor environments). In addition, the Derby offers unsurpassed breathability allowing body heat and perspiration to pass through the fabric and away from the skin, while the tightly woven membranes prevent any wind from travelling through the material to keep the wearer comfortable at all times. The unique Interchangeable Lining System provides the option to zip in a cosy Baleno gilet (Harvey) or sleeved fleece jacket (Henry) to create an extra layer of warmth but without creating bulk or the dreaded ‘Michelin Man’ effect! As you’d expect from a jacket designed to be worn for shooting, the Derby also includes a number of practical features such as two chest pockets with fleece hand warmers to help keep numb fingers at bay; two large front cartridge pockets with popper stud flaps to safely store cartridges and other shooting essentials; two back pleats with a zipper to allow for extensive range of movement around the hips and waist and neat inner cuffs and adjustable cuff straps to give a snug, draught free fit. With the Derby’s classic smart design, you may even choose to wear the jacket as general country attire - thankfully the abrasion resistant fabric with its excellent cleaning qualities makes it easy to restore the jacket’s good looks after a day out in the field! his jacket exudes quality. The collar and cuffs are lined with soft cotton corduroy which feels great and adds warmth in cold weather. The coat is incredibly light weight and is manufactured in a dry wax fabric. It features modern brass zips and closures and is belted to provide additional feminine shaping. The cotton tartan lining also adds extra elegance to the jacket. There are multiple pockets for storing those every day essentials and also a biker style collar which also has a throat strap to keep the jacket

fastened. All of the features are authentic brass and look great against the waxed finish. This is a fantastic outdoor jacket which is incredibly warm and ideal for either country walks or modern enough to wear around town! Another great feature of the jacket is that it is waterproof. So if you are caught out and about you are sure not to get soaked as no water will be able to penetrate through. The cotton lining is comfortable and breathable to wear close to your skin and feels and looks amazing. Compared to other waterproof jackets the Croft certainly has the edge, as many don’t have that modern twist and are only shower proof. If you are looking for a fashionable jacket that keeps you warm and protected then this is a great choice, one that I would highly recommend. It will certainly stand you apart from the rest. The croft jacket is available from Baleno in sizes XS – 2XL. THE DETAILS View the full range and find your nearest stockist at www.baleno.be

Chapman Bags Authentically British Made Bags, Luggage and Accessories

Chapman Bags started life as a manufacturer of rugged, traditional fishing and shooting bags, a range long since expanded to offer high quality, authentically British made bags, luggage and accessories for Men and Women. Each bag is designed and manufactured in the company’s own factory in Carlisle, Cumbria, using traditional artisanal techniques and British made materials and components wherever possible. The natural beauty of the surrounding Borders and Lake District provides much of the inspiration for the brand.

J

ohn Chapman, the founder, is still a regular visitor to the factory. While the products he designed soon found their way on to the arms and shoulders of celebrities and royalty, his vision was to offer a high quality British made product at a reasonable price, values to which the Company still subscribes. Daniel Chamier, the current owner

114 JANUARY2017

and CEO, believes that an authentic British provenance is key to the appeal of the brand: “So many brands now don’t deliver what they promise, we feel it’s an important differentiating factor for us to do this the hard way! It would be much easier for us to source our products say in China, but we don’t. We work hard with young people locally to get them into the business and develop the skills they and we need to make our products in this country. We have a real stake in a local community of people here in Carlisle, Cumbria, and we believe that is critical to the Company’s future.” As a sign of its commitment to British manufacturing, Chapman recently expanded its Carlisle facility and runs a number of apprenticeship programmes. While the appeal of Chapman’s heritage products remains undimmed, the Company actively develops new styles and collections to suit contemporary needs. The new British Rivers Collection offers a range of modern Men’s bags and luggage, specified in a British dyed and shower proofed 18oz canvas twill. Each piece is named after a British river and all of the styles feature padded technology compartments. THE DETAILS For more information about Chapman Bags visit the website at www.chapmanbags.com

Dr Ariel Haus

Introducing UltraShape Power the latest Non-Surgical Body Shaping Treatment

Dr Ariel Haus is a Dermatologist from Brazil and delighted to announce that his Harley Street Clinic is now home to the UK's very first UltraShape Power Platform.

U

ltraShape Power is the next generation of a treatment that Dr Haus has been performing for some time and which Tatler Magazine judged to be the 'Best for Slack Tummies' in their 2016 Cosmetic Guide. With the arrival of this new more powerful platform, Dr Haus' patients will be able to benefit from better results and shorter treatment times. UltraShape Power uses ultrasound technology for immediate and permanent fat cell destruction, reduced body circumference and to tighten the skin of treated areas. This is a non-surgical procedure that does not require any recovery time or leave any visible signs of treatment on the skin. To date over 350,000 UltraShape treatments have been carried out worldwide. UltraShape Power uses focused energy which means that fat cells are targeted but the surrounding skin, blood vessels, nerves and connective tissue all remain unharmed. The broken down fat cells are cleared by the body naturally following treatment. A minimum of 3 treatments spaced 2 weeks apart are advised and results will usually be seen within the first 14-28 days following treatment. UltraShape Power can be used to treat the abdomen, flanks or love handles, upper arms, inner and outer thighs. Depending on

116 JANUARY2017

the area to be treated, a treatment can be done in as little as 45 minutes. For anyone also concerned by the appearance of cellulite, Dr Haus usually recommends a combination treatment incorporating UltraShape and VelaShape Technologies. VelaShape is a treatment that combines infrared, laser and suction technology to target cellulite and improve skin elasticity. Dr Haus has been carrying out treatments with VelaShape for a number of years and his London Clinic is home to VelaShape III which is also the latest version of this treatment. 2017

Fitness Forecast BY ABI JACKSON

The last few years have seen some major trends emerge in the world of fitness. The days of merely ticking a box with an exercise class, or a few weekly sessions in the gym to tone up and keep trim are, for many, long gone. We now want so much more from our fitness regimes.

W

hat's it doing for us? How can we improve - and is there a gadget that'll help us record that improvement? Will it make us stronger, but also more calm, happy and motivated? And we don't just want to participate - we want to read about our chosen disciplines, buy the gear, and share and compare on social media too. Having a keen interest in fitness is, of course, nothing new. What is new is how ensconced it's become in the mainstream. You no longer have to work in the industry, or be pro or semi-pro, to want to take your exercise seriously and seek to understand its mechanics; everybody can. Here's a quick look at how some of these key trends are forecasted to develop in 2017... MIND IS THE MATTER While there's still a way to go with mental health awareness, we are talking about mental health more now than ever - and we're increasingly aware that looking after ourselves is as much about managing stress and keeping our minds healthy as it is about getting our all-important five-a-day and not smoking. Much research has found that exercise can have similar - and indeed sometimes even more effective - results than antidepressant drugs, and that regular exercise can improve mood in those with mild to moderate depression, and also play a role in the treatment of major clinical depression. Most people I know who see exercise as a crucial part of their lives cite 'stress-relief' as one of its key benefits. Getting our heart rates up 120 JANUARY2017

and flooding our veins with oxygen triggers chemical reactions that offset the strain and exhaustion of our demanding worlds, not only helping us feel more in control and grounded, but also serving as a reminder that there's more to life. CHASING ZEN As well as being a general factor across all exercise disciplines, 'mindful fitness' is growing in more targeted ways too, specifically with the continually growing popularity of the likes of yoga, Pilates and Tai Chi-type classes, where calm, focus and deep breathing play central roles, and for many people are the number one appeal of participating. "Yoga has become a perennial player in the trend lists and its massive range of different style, alongside its continuous results in participants means it is staying in the top list and going nowhere," says celebrity trainer Matt Roberts, whose clients include David Cameron. CHALLENGING TIMES Alongside this, our thirst for adrenalin and escapism through exercise also looks like it knows no bounds, as more and more of us sign up to personal challenges. It's not just about achieving ever-more challenging targets though; the escapism plays a key part too, wanting to be more well-rounded people with multiple interests and skills, whose lives and identities no longer revolve so disproportionately around work and income. SHOW ME THE RESULTS High-intensity interval training [HIIT], something that's now incorporated across countless workout classes and disciplines. These workouts tend to be fast, and promise fast results too, which, in research trials at least, also deliver. "[HIIT] has stayed popular because those people who are into their training like the hard, high-intensity, barrier-pushing appeal, while for those who are less exercise-inclined, it offers a solution that doesn't eat up too much time but does produce good results," says Roberts. "There will always be concerns about the safety of true high-intensity training for certain individuals but, as always, provided the individual is generally in good health then the approach is fantastic for many different goals and outcomes."

Bored of the treadmill? Looking for another way to keep fit? Here is a guide to the ultimate fitness classes - which one is for you?

ZUMBA Originating from Latin dance styles, Zumba is a cardiovascular and aerobic exercise routine that infuses exercise with dance and choreography. The workout alternates between fast-paced and slow-paced dance moves which are practiced in time to Latin rhythms. Among the dance form’s influences are salsa, hip-hop and rumba. This South American workout tones the body through its use of resistance exercises which effectively amount to interval training due to the varying speeds at which they are carried out. CIRCUIT TRAINING Circuit training involves a number of exercises – or ‘stations’ – which are performed one after the other, with a short rest in between. Exercises vary, but tend to include aerobic exercises such as shuttle runs, star jumps and burpees, along with strength moves such as pushups, squats and lunges. The nature of a circuit training class means that, rather than raising your heart rate and keeping it high for the duration of the class, it gives you more of an ‘interval training’ effect, where you mix intense bursts of activity with recovery periods. It is a very effective way of improving aerobic fitness. BOXERCISE/KICKBOXERCISE Boxercise and kickboxercise are derivatives of boxing and kickboxing and use the drills and techniques of their respective sports in a non-contact setting, usually in the form of a circuit. For example, you might find yourself shadowboxing, skipping, using punch bags or teaming up with a partner to punch or kick focus pads. Both are considered one of the best all-round high intensity exercise classes to get you in great shape. One study found that people felt more calm, more focused and less anxious after a kickboxing class. Taking out all that aggression on a punch bag can be a great stress reliever! 124 JANUARY2017

PILATES Pilates is a form of exercise which works on restoring correct posture and alignment (which are under constant attack from our seated, sedentary lifestyles), strengthening the muscles that stabilise the joints, and working particularly strongly on the abdominals and back. The movement exercises are very precise, focused and controlled, and performed on an exercise mat in a class context. YOGA Yoga strengthens muscles, improves joint flexibility, and enhances balance, coordination and posture through a series of diverse poses (or ‘asanas’). There are many types of yoga. For example, ashtanga yoga is more energetic than viniyoga. Yoga works on the whole body without favouring one side, and includes forward and backward bending, twists, balances and inversions.Movements are coordinated with the breath. Different types of yoga have very different focuses and approaches – so it’s best to watch a class or speak to the instructor before you take part. DANCE Dance classes are a lot of fun and very sociable – plus the high concentration factor means you’ll hardly be aware that you are doing a ‘workout’, on not if you are spending half the class trying to figure out which way to spin or how to shimmy. That said, there are so many different types of dance to try that you are sure to get the hang of one of them. Ballet sculpt class won’t teach you to be a ballerina, and salsa aerobics won’t give you the skills to take to the floor like a dance champion, but what they will do, is give you a taste of the benefits of dance and appeal of the ‘real thing’.

Could This

be Your Year?

Make This Your Year! Dear Reader Happy new year. I hope you don’t mind, but I’m going to get serious here for a moment…. Whatever your politics, there’s no doubt that 2016 was a tumultuous year. From Brexit to the US presidential elections, we have all been through a lot of change recently. Last week I talked to you about feeling exhausted as a result of Christmas. I am absolutely certain that many of us are also mentally exhausted following an unrelentless few months of breaking news…. And a great number of people are worried about what the future will bring, too. That’s not good for any of us. So as we stand at the opening of a brand new year, I want to make a plea to you. While world events are very important – and affect us all – make 2017 the year when you focus on yourself. I don’t mean that in an “all about me” or selfish way. I just mean that we sometimes need to focus on our own health and wellbeing, both physical and mental. Take care of yourself… put yourself first... And indulge in a little “me time”. I know that makes some people feel a little guilty, but it really shouldn’t. After all, if we’re not operating at 100% optimal level, we’re no good to ourselves, let alone others, are we? And when you do take care of ourselves, it’s easier to do our best and be there for our close friends and family. You may remember that over the last few months, I’ve sent out a few emails about mindfulness. That’s something I’m a firm believer in. Like many of my patients, who are also practising it, I’m trying hard to learn not to worry about the past or the future, but to enjoy every day as a separate day. Mindfulness may be a trendy ‘buzzword’ at the moment, but it’s a simple principle that’s based on the age-old idea that we need to look after ourselves. That ‘looking after’ can take many forms… It can be a half-hour sit-down with a cup of tea and a good book. It can be an energetic workout at the gym or a walk with a friend. Or it can be a ‘just for me’ treatment at a beauty salon or at your local aesthetic clinic :- ) It doesn’t matter what the ‘me time’ is – the important thing is that you make time for it…. Yes, your children may be going back to school in a few days’ time, but don’t forget that in only a few weeks they’ll be off again for half-term. So it’s vital that you take your ‘me time’ now and yes - let’s say it loud and proud – indulge yourself so that you recharge your batteries! After all, to paraphrase a well-known TV advert…. because you’re worth it! Warm regards, and here’s to a wonderful 2017,

Ravi

BEST FOOT

forwards BY ABI JACKSON

Does running feature in your 2017 fitness goals? Signed up for the London Marathon? As one of the most convenient and efficient forms of exercise out there, more and more people are catching the jogging bug - but while the simplicity of running is no doubt a big part of the appeal, getting the kit right can be daunting for beginners, and one of the things you’ll want to consider is your footwear.

I

f you’re a newbie, you might not want to spend a fortune, but it’s worth remembering that a lot of technology goes into developing running shoes and, ultimately, it’s about avoiding injury, as well as enhancing performance and enjoyment.

So what should we be looking out for? SOLE SEARCHING “Every runner is different, and every run is different. A good running shoe should cater for exactly what you need,” says Angus Wardlaw, director of FUTURE Running at Adidas. The key design elements in any shoe, he notes, are the outsole, midsole, and upper, all of which serve a vital purpose in the overall function, stability and comfort of the shoe. “The outsole, normally

made of rubber, provides the grip for the runner. When running in mud or on trails, the outsole needs to have a deeper and more aggressive set of lugs that perform like a mountain bike tyre. The midsole is what provides the cushioning and gives you the comfort under your heel when running. The upper is what wraps your foot and is responsible for giving a running shoe its comfortable fit and support. Different combinations are used to build running shoes that meet the needs of any athlete.” MADE WITH PURPOSE If you already have a decent enough pair of trainers, can you just run in them? Lots of us are guilty of using the same footwear for all our fitness activities, whether it’s a gym class, weights workout or jog, and that’s not always a bad thing, as it is possible to get a decent all-rounder - but it can be. Again, it depends on the shoe specifics and your needs, but if you are aiming to run frequently, investing in a shoe that’s designed for running could make a big difference. For gym work and gym classes you ideally need a versatile all-rounder. The disciplines within that environment can put different demands on the body and many people will do a variation of exercises when they train. A versatile training shoe will provide some stability to help with lifting, some cushioning to help with running and then some support for jumps and lateral movements. People who want to focus on specific aspects of training can pick more specialised shoes, for example; a shoe for aerobics should be lightweight, have some shock absorption and a flexible forefoot, whereas a shoe for lifting weights should have a firm, flat sole with grip on the ground to support a secure stance. KNOW YOUR NEEDS Considering your needs in terms of a shoe takes in the terrain you’ll be running on, how often and how far you’ll be running, plus additional factors, such as the shape of your foot, any problems you have with gait, pain or injuries and the way your foot touches down when you run. Talking to a specialist stockist and having your gait analysed can help identify any individual needs in this area. Some people may benefit from additional support from an orthopaedic insole - especially those with ‘flat feet’, low arches, sufferers of plantar fascia strain and anyone adding on the miles in preparation for a half marathon, marathon or ultra distance. Custom orthotics can be pricey but generic insoles aren’t always successful and give customised support, and are designed to gently lift your arch into its optimal position while allowing your foot to function properly and prevent overpronation. The deep heel cup stabilises your foot in the shoe and reinforces your heel’s natural shock-absorbing quality. SOLE footbeds flex as you run so they are supportive but not controlling.

HEALTH & FITNESS

Get fit as a family While we're all leading busy lives, it can be hard to fit in family time, let alone time to exercise. We've put together some family fitness activities that will help you to bond with your children as well as keeping everyone fit and healthy!

G

etting the family involved in sport is a guaranteed way of improving everyone’s fitness – so why not try out some of the following... Swimming is always a sure-fire hit with the kids, and a fun family activity. An hour’s swimming can burn up to 300 calories as well as build your upper-body strength and it also gives your heart, lungs and all the major muscle groups in your body a good workout. Family cycling. There are now more and more safe cycling routes that are traffic-free for family-friendly cycling. Even if your child is too young to control a bike on their own, you can buy child seats or attachments that link their bike to yours.

130 JANUARY2017

Cycling is a fun way to shift the pounds because it burns between 200 and 800 calories per hour! Indoor games for the family. Badminton, ten-pin bowling and table-tennis (to name just three) are all activities that everyone in the family can have a go at. Activity holidays. Nowadays, there is a growing trend for the traditional beach holiday to be supplemented by something a little more dynamic and adventurous. The opportunity to experience a new sport without compromising family time is ideal – and with the wide range of sports now on offer, there will be something for everyone. Water sports, trekking or even daily excursions are more beneficial and healthy than sun-lounger-type breaks – plus they are more enjoyable family activities. Walking with the family. The simplest of healthy activities, costs nothing and can be enjoyed almost anywhere. A family walk over a couple of hours will tire out the children and bring a multitude of health benefits including exercising the cardiovascular system, strengthening and toning the legs and burning approximately 100 calories per hour. Family outdoor activities. Whether it’s a playing in the garden, a game of ‘tag’ in the

local park or some fun on the swings and slides, simple outdoor games and activities are great for quality family time and exercise. The children will love it and you’ll also benefit from the getting your heart rate a little higher. Make sure all the family members can get involved so that everyone has the chance to exercise. Family day trips. Any event that involves everyone getting up and about will contribute to the family’s health and fitness. Visiting the zoo, going to a sporting event or exploring a theme park is something that can be enjoyed by all the family and will also involve expending plenty of calories en-route! It doesn’t have to be hell to be healthy for you or your family and using some smart combinations of activities such as the ones above means that you’ll neither neglect your family nor your fitness. Of course everyone is busy and yes, everyone wants a piece of you, but there aren’t many more important things than maintaining your health and fitness and spending some time with your family, so go and do it!

The fountain of youth? Turn to a once-a-day Nutraceutical skin DRINK for youthful healthy skin Healthy skin has abundant collagen, ‘stretchy’ elastin, and is well hydrated. Over time, the ageing processes such as glycation and oxidation take their toll on the appearance and function of our skin. The aesthetic industry is now saturated with high quality, effective topical creams and serums plus a whole array of high tech lasers, facials, microdermabrasion devices, peels, micro-needling, injectables, etc, which all help to stimulate and boost collagen in the skin, thus giving us a more youthful appearance.

T

hese all work very well, but how about also stimulating collagen from the INSIDE rather than just working externally? After all, collagen-making fibroblast skin cells are found in the deeper layers of the skin, so it makes sense to also stimulate them from inside the body – doesn’t it? One product is clinically proven to do just that, Totally Derma® is a unique pharma-grade, nutraceutical skin drink that supports anti-ageing of the skin from the inside. Totally Derma® was originally a medical supplement for osteoarthritis patients, who began to notice firmer, plumper, more hydrated skin as well as more flexible joints. Totally Derma® contains a world renowned superior form of highly bioavailable collagen, named Arthred®; clinical studies prove 95% absorption. This ensures the Totally Derma® collagen passes the gut barrier and is then distributed via the blood circulation to the fibroblasts (the cells responsible for producing collagen) which are then clinically shown to be stimulated and increase their collagen production by

fourfold after consuming Totally Derma® for 4 weeks. Totally Derma® also contains patented Synovoderma® Hyaluronic Acid which, like Arthred®, holds a 95% scientifically proven absorption level for maximum results. Most Hyaluronic Acid supplements are poorly absorbed and are therefore minimally effective, unlike Synovoderma®. Hyaluronic Acid is a gel-like water holding molecule that hydrates and plumps the skin, thus ironing out fine wrinkles. Totally Derma® also contains 7 co-factors. These include Grape Seed Extract, Green Tea extract, Vitamin C, Alpha Lipoic Acid, Zinc, Manganese and Copper. The combination of all these ingredients not only help to make more collagen in the skin but they also assist in repairing skin damage and inflammation. Consumers should expect to see results for hydration within 2 weeks and visible results within two months. The skin drink will complement the use of cosmeceutical skincare and medical aesthetic treatments for a double pronged approach to anti-ageing, internally and externally.

Leading Aesthetic Doctor, Dr Natalie Blakely, Light Touch Clinic, Weybridge, says, “I spend my life trying to get my patients to do things which build more collagen in the skin. It’s kind of the holy grail for anti-ageing. The reason I like Totally Derma® is because it is scientifically proven and we know what the therapeutic doses are. I strongly advise my patients in between courses of treatment, where we are using machines to try and stimulate collagen production, to take Totally Derma®, because everything we can do to get the body to make collagen is only going to enhance results and improve downtime periods.” Dr Gabriela Mercik, Dr Gabriela 56 Harley Street Clinic, leading expert in PDO threads nonsurgical face and body lift says, “I was awaiting the kind of drink (medically proven) which will help daily to increase collagen and HA and will help me to achieve better result with the PDO lifting. Totally Derma® came at the right time. The biggest advantage compared to other treatments, is that the collagen and hyaluronic acid in Totally Derma® are increased all over the body, not just in a targeted area. The overall skin quality of the body improves as do general joint aches and pains, plus patients comment that their hair and nails are much healthier and stronger.” Totally Derma® is easy to take, just one scoop mixed in water or juice before bed every day is all that’s needed. Consuming it at night time helps to take advantage of the body’s own optimal collagen production which happens in the first few hours of sleep. Or if a morning routine better suits, add it to your Ninja/Nutribullet smoothie! Women in their menopausal years can also experience a relief in vaginal dryness and discomfort by taking Totally Derma. These are all wonderful side effects from taking a product to improve the appearance of fine lines on your face. Totally Derma® is an effective, natural product that should be considered by most, especially those who are 35 years plus, as part of their anti-ageing defense.

supermodel skin

hile most of us can only dream of having a supermodel figure, it is possible to get their flawless, glowing complexion by following their top beauty secrets. Here are five simple tricks to make sure your skin is ready for its close up.

FRESHEN UP American fashion model Karlie Kloss has revealed that she likes misting her face with rose water in the morning due to its refreshing and moisturising qualities. Rose water, which is created through the distillation of rose petals and water, is a natural and sweet-smelling beauty product that is great for freshening up skin throughout the day and which can also be used as a toner for dry skin types. It also has anti-inflammatory properties, so is great for reducing redness and soothing irritated skin. Those with oily skins can also benefit from using a face mist to freshen up their skin throughout the day. Lavender water is particularly good for those with oily or acne-prone complexions. You could even try making your own face mist using purified water and essential oils. This can be stored in the fridge and used to tone and freshen up your skin when required. TRUST IN MOTHER NATURE Natural skincare has become increasingly popular in recent years, due to the potentially harmful nature of many chemical ingredients used in synthetic beauty products, and many supermodels have cottoned on to this trend. Lily Cole is a fan of tea tree oil for helping to keep her complexion blemish-free. Miranda Kerr is also a big advocate of organic products and has even launched her own beauty line, KORA Organics. If you don’t want to splash out on skin products, you could try making your own natural skincare products using ingredients found in your kitchen. Many common kitchen staples can double up as beauty products, such as olive oil – which makes a great natural body moisturiser – and brown sugar, which can be mixed with olive oil to make an exfoliator. Oatmeal is also a useful ingredient for those with dry or eczema-prone skin, either used as an exfoliating cleanser or added to bathwater. 136 JANUARY2017

USE AN SPF One of the most important steps for maintaining a supermodel-like complexion is to make sure you always apply sunscreen before you leave the house. Heidi Klum advocates wearing a daily SPF and avoids spending too long in the sun. As a supermodel knows, when it comes to wrinkles prevention is better than cure, so try making an effort now to ward off one of the leading causes of wrinkles. While many of us wait until summer to bring out the sun protection, the UV rays which cause premature ageing (as well as skin cancer) can penetrate through clouds and cause irreversible damage. To help delay signs of ageing, wear an SPF of at least factor 15 every day. GO MAKEUP-FREE Many supermodels, including Ranya Mordanova and Rosie HuntingtonWhiteley, are regularly seen out and about without a stitch of makeup. In fact, many of them make a point of going makeup-free while they are away from work. Ranya Mordanova has revealed that she will only wear concealer on her days off, to allow her skin to breathe. Going make-up free every now and then is good for your skin, and it can also be good for your confidence to know that you don’t need all the cosmetics. To look beautiful without your makeup, try exfoliating your skin and applying a good moisturiser for a natural glow, grooming your eyebrows to help shape your face and wearing colours that complement your natural complexion. EAT BEAUTY-BOOSTING FOODS To get clear and flawless skin it is important to pay attention to your diet as well as your skincare, as most supermodels know. Karolina Kurkova is said to drink green smoothies made from green vegetables and fruit juice as part of her healthy diet, while Mirte Maas has revealed that she eats a diet rich in healthy foods such as whole grains, fresh fruit and veg. Aminata Niaria also puts her glowing skin down to her high consumption of fish, which is rich in beauty-boosting omega-3 fatty acids. To keep your skin in good condition, make sure you eat a wellbalanced and varied diet rich in face-friendly foods, including nutritious fruits, vegetables and oily fish. Deficiencies in nutrients such as iron and vitamin B12 can lead to pale, sallow skin, so make sure you are getting enough of these nutrients in your diet. Nuts are also a great source of vitamin E, which can help the skin to retain its natural moisture levels and stay soft and hydrated.

Get a good night’s sleep this winter with Westend Bed Company

Westend Bed Company is a new specialist bed showroom located in East Sheen, South West London. The highly experienced team are dedicated to educating clients on the importance of getting a quality night’s sleep and showing them how best to achieve this every night.

A

s we delve into the winter months and the UK starts to battle plummeting night-time temperatures it is no surprise that people are hiking up the thermostats and digging out their high tog duvets. But 140 JANUARY2017

with energy costs already sky high, turning your thermostat down during the night could not only save you money, but could also help you get a good night’s sleep. Brent Cooper, Managing Director at Westend Bed Company, advises: “People need to resist the temptation to increase the temperature in their bedroom this winter. A hot room will dramatically impact on the quality of their sleep as it will increase their core temperature making them sweat – this will cause them discomfort and either break their sleep pattern or cause them to wake.” “Maintaining a neutral temperature throughout the night is a vital component to a healthy night’s sleep. The bedroom only needs to be heated to around 18°C to ensure people experience deep, restorative sleep and avoid feeling exhausted the following day.”

Thermoregulation – your body’s heat distribution system – is strongly linked to sleep cycles. When you sleep, your body’s internal temperature actually drops to its lowest level, generally about four hours after you fall asleep. Scientists believe a cooler bedroom may therefore be most conducive to sleep, since it mimics your body’s natural temperature drop. Choosing the right bed and linens is also essential to aid thermoregulation and your bed should contain as much natural material as possible. Brent adds: “Many of the beds available in Westend Bed Company, particularly in our Marshall & Stewart Diamond Collection, contain nature’s finest materials, such as cotton, lambswool, cashmere and hand teased loose horsehair, allowing the body to breathe and regulate its temperature, giving our customers the best possible restorative sleep.” Westend Bed Company is home to a fantastic collection of luxury beds including the largest selection of Hypnos beds in the UK. The showroom is also the flagship store for Marshall & Stewart’s exclusive Diamond Collection. Every bed in this collection has been handmade in the UK by master craftsmen using traditional techniques. Perfectly complementing these beds is a specially chosen selection of beds from Simon Horn. This collection includes the exquisite upholstered and caned Louis XV and Louis XVI style beds, the Mirror Obelisk Four Poster and traditional Sleigh beds. As part of the team’s mission to help improve people’s sleep, the showroom also has a purpose built Sleep Room where customers can experience the market-leading Super CAD adjustable bed from Treca Interiors Paris. Westend Bed Company has a fantastic winter sale across all its collection of luxury beds. Find out more in store. The bed linen collection available at Westend Bed Company has been expertly created using age-old traditional techniques combined with precise finishing and decades of expert handicraft. The exquisite collection includes fitted sheets, flat sheets, duvet covers and pillow cases. The experienced team are always on hand and happy to offer great tips and advice to get the perfect linen to suit your sleep requirements and interior style.

The team at Westend Bed Company also offer a complimentary bed consultation service to help you discover the correct model, design and support system for you to achieve a truly restorative night’s sleep, every night. Room for romance Romance is a funny old thing; it can sneak upon you, hit you like a thunderbolt, or just be tantalisingly out of reach, but there’s one place where it’s all too easy to feel the love - at home.

R

ooms which are cosy, cherishing and cosseting are as good as a hug on a cold winter’s day, while those dressed with tactile ‘touch-me’ textures and sensual curves seduce the senses. Similarly, while love comes in all shapes and sizes, so do settings, and there are several looks to fall for, which could appeal if you’re flirting, infatuated or totally committed to a romantic decor choice. If all things amour set your heart racing, be inspired this 14th February and use the red of those classic love tokens, hearts and roses, as a decor cue. Pastel pinks and pretty touches are for those with a head-over-heels crush on fashionable boudoir style, while neutral tones, skilfully embellished with decorative accents, are so subtle that they have a timeless appeal. So don’t wait for love to come knocking - simply romance the rooms!

142 JANUARY2017

Red’s not for the faint-hearted, as its rich shades can overpower. But allow it to star in a pure white room, and it will leave no doubt of your love of drama. “Red is undoubtedly the most dynamic colour in the spectrum,” says Marianne Shillingford, creative director for Dulux. “We are drawn to it as it attracts attention and promises excitement with an edge of danger. Whether it’s a little red dress, a lipstick, roses or a sport’s car, this colour always has impact. That’s because all colours have wavelengths, similar to sound, and each has a distinctive characteristic. As red has the longest wavelength, it could be described in sound terms as mimicking a pounding heart or a beating drum, and stimulates the appetite for everything, including love and passion. Remember also that bursts of passion are exciting in a relationship - and bold colours enliven rooms. Consider painting a piece of furniture in your favourite red shade, and add pops of red - ‘kisses’ - in accessories.” Heartfelt Touches A sofa’s a vital ingredient for that classic romantic movie scene; open fire, candlelight and a sumptuous sofa. Heart-shaped accessories may abound at this time of year, but avoid the naff and predictable - there are more quirky, interesting pieces around.

The Latest Trend in

Table Top Design There are many available options when it comes to choosing the perfect table top material.A few of the most common and popular materials include glass, aluminium and timber. Each material can help to provide your home with a different aesthetic.Although these are quite popular in the market at the moment there are also other materials that are increasingly becoming a popular choice.

C

eramic as a table top finish has shown a lot of interest in the past couple of months and is already showing signs of the trend continuing into 2017. Ceramic is an ideal finish for a table top as it is longer lasting and completely stain resistant meaning there is no maintenance required. IQ Furniture’s Marmi ceramic table tops designed by Cattelan Italia are now more popular than marble due to their incredible characteristics and low maintenance. The Marmi ceramic table tops are available in three beautifully grained finishes including Calacatta, Alabastro and Aredesia with the option of four stylish bases including Gordon, Yoda, Eliot and Spyder. With a wide variety of sizes with up to one piece of 300cm wide x 120cm deep in a rectangular shape, IQ’s tops can also be ordered in round and square shapes. The Gordon dining table is available in a range of shapes and sizes,

allowing you to fit the item of furniture in your required space. With the choice of three finishes you are able to find the perfect finish to match the rest of your interior design. The Gordon stand is available with a transparent varnished metal, white, black or graphite embossed lacquered steel. The Yoda dining table has a similar top to Gordon although the table top sits on a thicker base made with satin titanium steel or white, black or graphite embossed lacquered steel. The Eliot dining table has a long, rectangular fixed table top with two table legs available in white, black or graphite embossed lacquered steel or in satin stainless steel. This is available as a fixed or extendable table, allowing you to create even more space for your friends and family to enjoy a meal. The Spyder dining table is also a very popular choice due to its wide range of base finishes including satin bronze, Canaletto Walnut or Heritage Oak. With the range of ceramic table top finishes and base finishes, you are able to make this dining table suit your interior design perfectly. The legs are very similar to those on the Eliot table, although these legs are more spider-like creating four table legs. See the light in 2017 BY GABRIELLE FAGAN

Lighting can transform rooms creating different atmospheres and even, by visual trickery, changing the dimensions of a space. Once you’ve learnt to play with the options, there’s no limit to the effects you can enjoy, but with such a huge array of lighting on offer, the right choice for your home may not always be glaringly obvious. Here we reveal illuminating advice on ‘seeing the light’, and the top trends for 2016... BIG & BOLD Lighting design is about to change dramatically. Rather than being the carrier of one or several large light bulbs, light fittings will become the source of light in their own right. Organic shapes and new materials will combine with the myriad, hugely effective, LED light sources, to create stunning and dramatic lighting, while standard, domestic lighting will become more elegant, compact and efficient. Almost daily, exciting and innovative lights are being launched, which showcase design talent, new materials and technology. Interestingly though, one of the strongest trends for the past few years has been anything but high-tech; retro industrial lighting is still hugely in demand. Sun metal pendants, workshop adjustable wall lights and factory floor and table lamps are very on trend, and look particularly effective teamed with traditional style filament light bulbs. LIGHTBULB MOMENT Decorative light bulbs, glass shades and cluster pendants are stars of this 154 JANUARY2017

year’s light range. Decorative bulbs - with LED, filaments or appealing shapes - are really making an impact as they are an easy, inexpensive but extremely appealing way to freshen up a space. Cluster pendants are a striking alternative to a large statement pendant shade, and work well in smaller spaces. To feature lighting - oversized floor lamps through to decorative wall lights - as a form of functional art, which make a statement in any room. MAJOR IN METAL Metallics, especially copper’s warm tones, combine with light to give a warm glow, and will take centre stage in this year’s collections. Metallics are expected to gain momentum in 2016, and that’s evident in lighting ranges. Bronze, brass, copper and chrome all provide a hint of vintage luxury, while their highly reflective surfaces dance a warm, sparkling glow around the room. Metallic accents are great because they can be adapted to suit all tastes, from clusters of distressed copper pendant lights for industrial style spaces, to glamorous mercury silver table lamps catering to the luxurious statement home. COLOUR & CALM More use of colour, and coordinating the style of a room’s lights, are two strong features - people are much more ready to experiment with lighting these days and there’s a huge choice available with chandeliers no longer confined to living rooms; they’re being used to add an instant glamour factor in kitchens, bedrooms and studies. Wall lights work wonderfully to draw attention to focal points - for instance, a pair of lights flanking a console table or work of art. Increasingly, people are co-ordinating table and floor lamps and pendants, a sure sign that they are taking more care over lighting, which ideally should be planned before redecoration. It’s all about using your imagination and indulging your own taste.

A fantastic floor show To put on a fantastic floor show, start by looking at the construction of your existing floor and make sure it’s suitable for the type of flooring you’ve got in mind. Heavy materials such as stone or terracotta tiles need a solid concrete base. If you’re laying a floor over wood, go for lighter materials such as lino, vinyl or wooden floorboards. VINYL FLOORING Comfortable and warm underfoot, vinyl is one of the most costeffective flooring options and comes in a range of colours and patterns. For a durable surface that won’t fade, choose a vinyl with the colour running through - those with surface patterns tend to develop a patchy look over time. Your supplier can advise you on the correct grade for your kitchen and, if you have the budget, have it installed by a professional, as badly fitting vinyl will peel at the edges. To keep it looking pristine, sweep it regularly and clean with a non-abrasive cleaner. STONE OR SLATE Consult an expert if you’re thinking of using stone or slate on a kitchen floor as its porous nature means it can stain easily. It’s also one of the most expensive floors you can buy, but it will add value to your home. To reduce the risk of staining, go for the less porous slate rather than marble or limestone and make sure you have it professionally sealed. Look at travertine too – a natural stone made in Italy from calcium carbonate. It has a pitted appearance, comes in many colours and stands up to most cleaning products, making it the durable choice. 156 JANUARY2017

If you have kids and pets running around, natural stone may not be the best option for you. LAMINATE This is a great, cost-effective option that creates an authentic, real wood plank effect at a fraction of the cost of the real thing. These days, you’ll also find stone and ceramic tile effects too. Laminates are tough so they’re ideal for busy households with lots of traffic in the kitchen. To create the appearance of real wood floorboards, choose a laminate with bevelled edges that form a v shape between the planks when they’re butted up together. Even better, this flooring is designed to be clicked together so there’s no need for messy glue and you can even lay it yourself if you’re a competent DIYer. HARDWOOD A real hardwood floor is expensive, but will add value to your home. Treat it with a Polyurethane finish to make it easier to maintain and clean. Wipe spills up quickly though, as any water sitting for a length of time on the floor will result in warping. Unlike laminates, if your floor gets damaged, you don’t have to replace the boards – you can simply sand them down and treat them again. CERAMIC TILES A popular choice for kitchens as they come in so many colours, textures and patterns allowing you to create your own unique look. You can even use a central colour and create a tiled border all around to frame the floor. Remember though, you need a solid concrete base for tiles as floorboards would shift underneath and cause cracks to form. Ceramic can be cold underfoot so consider installing underfloor heating. Choosing your kitchen flooring is as crucial as choosing the overall theme for your kitchen, so consult a specialist designer for further advice.

Every child needs somewhere

to play, think, cherish and grow... That’s why Little Lucy Willow has created furniture your child can depend on through their formative years and beyond.

H

andmade to order here in the UK and carefully finished in perfect pastels, each stunning collection is loved by girls, boys, toddlers and teens. Little Lucy Willow launched in 2005 filling a gap in the market for luxurious but affordable children’s furniture. Today, the Lancashire-based company boasts ten exclusive bedroom collections, each with its own flexible range of furniture, plus a deluxe selection of accessories, bedding, decor and gifts. Louise Thomas, managing director, says, “Our furniture has been carefully designed to be gorgeous yet practical so we offer space saving options as well as much larger pieces such as triple combination wardrobes and double beds. “The beauty of our furniture is that it can be built to suit any available space. As our products

158 JANUARY2017

are handmade to order it isn’t a problem for us to offer a bespoke service.” Timeless elegance plus solid, durable design lies behind the success of Little Lucy Willow which Louise says, they continue to build on. She added, “As parents ourselves we have a good idea of what works and what doesn’t but we like to hear what the customer wants too, so we are constantly evolving on that basis.” Themed collections such as Daisy Brambles and Little Buoy Blue sit aside the cleaner lines and sophistication of Archie Fairweather. All designs are built with both toddlers and teens in mind, thanks to a unique height adjustment feature. At its lowest setting, a bed base measures just 23cms from the floor. This can be raised as a child grows and underbed storage or a truckle added if required. Louise said, “It makes sense to invest in furniture which is going to last for many, many years. Customers love our height adjustment feature for this reason. Our furniture is built to last and we like to think that it will serve as a stunning backdrop to a child’s ever changing and evolving

personality. Just switching accessories and adding colour accents as a child’s tastes mature can keep a room looking fresh and on-trend.” Double beds are also now a popular choice for children. Louise explains, “If families have the space a double bed is a great option to consider. Not only will it last a child for many years but it will also serve as a guest bed if needs be. “Our furniture is all about investing in the future and we’re so confident in our products that we offer a five year guarantee. We believe there is nothing on the market today that matches Little Lucy Willow furniture in quality, affordability and design.” THE DETAILS For more information about Little Lucy Willow Heskin Barns,Top Floor, Heskin Farmers Market Craft Centre, Wood Lane, Heskin, Chorley, Lancashire PR7 5PA Telephone 0845 8030988 email enquiries@littlelucywillow.co.uk or visit www.littlelucywillow.co.uk

A Return To

Analogue

Candid shots of Hollywood stars, from Monroe to Hepburn and exquisite vintage travel lifestyle imagery from the fabulous Slim Aarons to enchanting social documentary photographs of a dachshund being greeted by a London hotel commissionaire by Kurt Hutton - welcome to the world of Archival photography.

“T

he world today is so fast paced and immediate, with screens, tablets and mobiles so prolific – it is impossible not to be bombarded with a constant stream of digital information and eye fodder almost every second of every day” says Galerie Prints founder, Stuart Möller. “Increasingly, there is a growing desire to want to slow it all down for a while and return to a semblance of something a little more special and real.” “Galerie Prints was created to celebrate beautiful archival photography, in the form of original silver gelatin prints, produced by hand, in a darkroom from the original negatives and utilisng the original transparencies wherever possible. There is something quite special about the fact that almost all of our prints are produced in this way – it has a directness and more intimate connection with the time in which a particular photograph was taken”. Working with some of the world’s most beautiful Archives & collections, like the prestigious Getty Images Archive & darkroom in London or the Everett Collection in New York, as well as with photographers directly, including the legendary music photographer Michael Putland Galerie Prints offers a breadth of subject matter – from Architecture to Film Stars and Sports to Social Documentary – in a variety of size and framing options. A photographer himself, and with decades of experience of working with image archives and photography magazines, Stuart adds “I don’t believe it is coincidence, that one of our best loved collections, the beautiful Slim Aarons* catalogue of work – which documents the high life of the wealthy and semi-famous of days gone by - from the 1950’s right through to the 1990’s – is so popular at the moment. Perhaps many of us long for a time before cell phones or the internet and before everyone knew instantly where everyone was and what they were doing. Maybe analogue has more of a place in the world then it ever had before.” Galerie Prints works in partnership with the prestigious Getty Images Archive and Slim Aarons Estate, to bring you officially certified prints from this beautiful collection. Our prints are produced as Original Colour C-type or Black & White Silver Gelatin Photographs – utilising the original transparencies and negatives housed at the Archive.

Award winning, fresh, new generation

Architectural Interior Design Olive Design Studio Ltd was set up in 2012 by Lucy Clark and Katie Singleton, two London based Interior Designers.

W

ith their collective 20 years’ experience in the Interior Design industry working on both luxury commercial and residential Interiors in the UK, Europe and Middle East and beyond at their studio, they have created an award winning, fresh, new generation Architectural Interior Design company with an impressive portfolio of luxury residential and commercial Interior Design schemes. Olive Design Studio recently won a 5* UK property award for an apartment in Marylebone, Central London. They were commissioned by a young Indian family with two children aged 7 and 5 to renovate a dated 1,500 sq ft apartment. Their clients had lived in the apartment for many years, pre-children. They had got to a point where they needed to update the design, put a new MEP scheme in place and organise the spaces more efficiently both in terms of structural alternations, storage and furniture layouts. Olive provided a turn key service dealing with the license to alter, project managing the build all the way through to styling and

162 JANUARY2016

accessorising the apartment. The design brief was to create an eclectic, open plan dining, living and kitchen space which was functional, practical and included an abundance of storage. With building regulations in place, particularly with regard to the Kitchen should a fire occur, we designed a bespoke glass crittal feature partition between the Kitchen and Living Space which still kept the light and open plan feel whilst also adding a unique personality to the space. Olive introduced eclectic tiles into the Kitchen from Artisans of Divises which added another dimension to the bespoke Bulthaup Kitchen and made the space feel much bigger. Olive also re-wired the apartment to create an abundance of light. The apartment was challenging in terms of spacial planning and furniture layouts so most pieces were designed bespoke by Olive and handmade in the UK with some of their trusted suppliers. iring a designer means you won’t have any of the stress usually associated when dealing with tradesmen and suppliers. A designer will not only save you time and effort, but money too, avoiding costly mistakes and passing on trade discounts where possible. Remember that you are not just using the skills of the designer, but also their trusted team of tradespeople and suppliers. So how do you go about selecting the right designer? The best place to start is the British Institute of Interior Design (BIID) www.biid.org.uk - you can explore their members throughout the country and worldwide - with each having the necessary insurances, qualifications and experience, and where you can see images of their style and type of work. I would recommend that you see three or four designers, you not only need to like a designer’s style but you need to get on with them too. Another online source is www.interiordesigners.net or any of Niche PR's 10 mostly award winning interior designer clients. It is vital that you give your designer as much information as possible about your lifestyle and tastes - gather interior images from magazines, collect paint or fabric swatches and styles you like. It is also important to be receptive to your designer’s ideas. 3D CAD visuals or freehand drawings are sometimes used and presented to a client to convey an original concept, which allows for amendments as the client wishes or as the design evolves. It is important to discuss your budget from the start. The way designers charge for their services vary on the size of the project. Overall there are four main ways of charging… A set fee is often used when the job involves complex structural renovations as well as decorating the interiors. In these cases the designer may agree a percentage of the contract as their fee, which can be around 15% for projects up to £250,000. Mark ups are usually adopted for smaller or pure decorating jobs. All designers can buy materials at trade prices and may charge the retail price and take their fee from the mark-up. Hourly rate - most designers offer a service whereby they will produce room schemes but leave the client to carry out or oversee the work themselves. This consultation is charged at an hourly rate, varying tremendously according to expertise and experience and could be anything from £75 an hour upwards. Some designers offer a free first consultation. Combination - for example a designer may charge an hourly rate for producing schemes and then charge retail prices and materials, or they may take a 5% design fee and then take a percentage of the mark-up on materials. Every job and price is different, it is recommended that you put aside around 15% as a contingency to allow for any unforeseen issues that arise or any changes to the scheme. So, whether you have a blank canvas or just want to refresh what you already have, hiring a designer will open the door to a realm of possibilities, through which you can wander at leisure while someone else does all the hard work.

or various reasons that we won’t go into here, 2016 got itself a bad name and 2017 is left with a lot of making up to do. Want this to be your year? Why not start by turning your attention to your home and wiping the slate clean. Imagine you’re a stranger, seeing it for the first time. Are there little imperfections that you’ve stopped noticing? Is it the home you’ve always dreamed of or one you’ve learned to live with? Take action and start with a deep clean and de-clutter. If the thought overwhelms you, do it room by room. If that’s too much, pick a corner of one room. Once you’ve given it an overhaul, you’ll be itching to do the rest. Now is also a good time to consider your flooring. It covers a large expanse and will make a dramatic difference if revitalised. It will also give you a strong backdrop for the rest of your home design. For a family, pet and heavy traffic friendly floor, why not consider wood? Wood flooring has come a long way since the days when engineered boards only came in honeyed hues. Now, they are available in a range of shapes, sizes and colours. The

Natural Wood Floor Company’s New England is a beautiful shade of buttermilk. It will breathe new life into your home with a fresh, clean look that doesn’t come with the headache of high maintenance. It won’t peel, blister or chip. The kids can thunder down corridors in their wellies and you can spill your tea on it without fear of leaving permanent marks. For a striking, modern look, there is Dusk, a stand out grey board that compliments all the key trends of 2017 – Nordic simplicity, Danish hygge, botanicals and more shades of grey. If you prefer the natural tones of wood, White Brushed offers a delicate spectrum of colour from silver and sand through to chocolate grey. “Like New England and Dusk, White Brushed has been manufactured using precision techniques,” explains Peter Keane, Director of The Natural Wood Floor Company. “This has enabled us to give the wood a rich colour whilst also enhancing the natural grain, meaning that no two boards will ever be the same.” Come and have a look at them for yourself at The Natural Wood Floor Company’s showrooms at 20 Smugglers Way in Wandsworth. A cool start to 2017 Surely this is traditionally the time of year for celebration. The idea of a Dry January is relatively new, and the first mention I can find of it being a good wheeze is the Finnish Government's directive of a "Sober January" to help its War Effort in 1942.

S

o, reverting to tradition it seems appropriate to start 2017 with a celebration of the Wine Cooler. Until the late 17th century numerous bottles of wine were cooled together in large basins of silver or marble. Up to then it was not the practice for a gentleman to drink alone or in small company, thus the individual bottle cooler is not known to have existed before 1698 when the Duke of Devonshire is recorded as having a pair in silver. In 1700 John 1st Duke of Marlborough beat him by having a pair made in solid gold. However, once these coolers were

168 JANUARY2017

introduced, within twenty years the leading silversmiths were commissioned to make them for every grand home in the country and they've never looked back. The first models had a separate detachable sleeve which dropped inside to enable the easy withdrawal of the bottle but this became an optional extra quite quickly. Their form and shape followed that of the fashionable lines of the time as in rococo or classical ornamentation but the big impetus in production came after the development of Sheffield Plate in the 1760's followed by Electro Plate in the 1830's. By the last quarter of the 19th century cafĂŠ society in the major cities had become the height of fashion and taking the evening meal in restaurants rather than at home became the thing to do. So the demand for handsome but heavy duty wine coolers grew, often made with the name of the establishment or the wine maker emblazoned on the side. These are now highly collectable in their own right and can be bought at easily affordable prices, while the stylish 1890's models can approach two to three thousand pounds. An important provenanced silver pair from the very early 1700's will cost a million. Now there's a celebration. BATHROOM GUIDE

ADD LUXURY TO YOUR BATHROOM WITH CASTELNAU TILES

PAGE 186

BATHROOM GUIDE

Wash this space We love bathrooms, especially beautiful and spa-like ones where we can create our own little oasis at home. Bathroom design has come a long way in the last 20 years. Whilst the importance of functionality remains; many more homeowners are now spending time and money to ensure striking aesthetics within their bathroom.

D

esigner bathrooms are a common site in many homes and such a project can add real value to the property. If you are seeking to create a modern designer bathroom look in your home then the tips below can help you achieve that goal.

A STYLISH BATH The first bathroom suite item to deal with is the bathtub. This is the piece of furniture that you will get the most enjoyment from and it is important to ensure that it provides comfort to the user. However, going for a practical model doesn't mean that you have to sacrifice style and there is a vast range of bathroom models, from twin baths that allow two people to bathe side by side, to corner baths that serve to maximise available space. If you prefer the more traditional rectangle shaped bath, there are still options available that provide that designer feel. Going for a separate tap installation also serves to create a unique look. THE SHOWER OPTION Whether you have enough space to install both a bathtub and a shower, or prefer to just have the latter in your bathroom; your choice of design will have a huge impact on the room. Quadrant shower enclosures that fit into the corner of the room with an arc shaped glass enclosing the two sides, give

178 JANUARY2017

an elegant finishing look to the suite. If you are planning to splash out you might like to consider a walk-in shower enclosure. Walk-ins give you greater mobility and access, and look grand as well as plenty of space to really relax and unwind. AN APPEALING BASIN Although you probably consider the bath or shower as being the most important of furniture in your bathroom, it is also the basin that acts as a central item in designer bathrooms. This is due to the fact that it will almost always have a mirror placed above it, which immediately draws the attention of anyone who enters the room. As such it is important to install a basin that looks fantastic. One option is to fit a vanity unit, with the basin sunk in so that it is flush with the surface. Alternatively you could add to the aesthetics by mounting the basin on top of the vanity unit and go for an unusual design, such as a funnel shaped basin. However, if you are going for an ultra-modern look then a hovering sink with hidden pipes is a good option. If you have a big enough bathroom, you could even decide to go for the double sink, which not only look great, but are also useful in a busy household. LUXURY TOUCHES Carefully coordinate your towels with the colour of the walls and bathroom suite. Add a stylish looking towel rail electric element to heat up the towels for added luxury. Coordinate other accessories such as the toilet roll and toothbrush holder. Get a sleek and stylish cabinet to hide away less attractive products or those you don't want to show. A well-chosen bathroom rug, a potted plant in the corner, or a framed picture hung on an empty wall; small pieces which can completely revamp the look of your suite. By ensuring that your accessories are attractive and functional, along with some good, soft lighting, you can create a calm and relaxing retreat, right inside your home.

BATHROOM GUIDE

New year, new bathroom? T

ime to update your bathroom? Joel Fry, Designer at bathroom retailer Ripples offers his advice about the three things to think about before you jump straight in this year…

THINK ABOUT YOUR TILING OPTIONS A tile will look very different on its own, compared to how it looks when it’s in place in your bathroom. It’s absolutely vital that people think about where they want their tiles placed, the colour and the size, before they make a final decision, these decisions will have a huge impact on the overall design of the bathroom. When it comes to tiling there’s a lot more to think about than people first realise and the style of the room will impact which tiles I would suggest someone picks, if a customer is looking for a contemporary finish, then I’d suggest we look at rectified tiles, the thinner grout lines will give you a crisp clean finish, through-body porcelain tiles (where the tile is the same colour throughout) will ensure that we don’t need to use tile trims and if a customer has a smaller bathroom, then I would suggest we look to use larger tiles to create a bigger feel. Mosaic tiles can create a beautiful feature in any bathroom, placed in the shower or on the wall next to the basin works very well. THINK ABOUT YOUR LIFESTYLE It’s paramount that before you think about colour schemes and products we ask all the essential questions to understand exactly how our customers use their bathrooms. I ask my customers how they use their bathroom, who uses the bathroom and how much time they spend in their bathroom. By asking these questions I can slowly start to build an understanding of their 180 JANUARY2017

requirements and our designers can work on creating them the perfect bathroom. If a customer suggests that they like to store a selection of beauty products in the bathroom, or that they like a very minimal look, then we would be thinking about streamline, simple storage options. Thinking about what you want in your bathroom will ensure that when it’s completed, it not only looks great but is practical too. THINK ABOUT YOUR WATER SYSTEM While there are an array of amazing products at Ripples, it’s important to consider whether the products that might have originally drawn your attention will work in your bathroom. For example, it’s important to get familiar with your water system because it will hugely affect what someone can buy. Do you have a gravity fed system, combination boiler or pressurised system? Knowing what type of water pressure you have and how it’s supplied to the bathroom will allow you to maximize the choice of product you specify and allow you to achieve maximum flow rates in your new bathroom. Visiting a bathroom specialist like Ripples will ensure that all of these areas (and more) are covered, and the outcome? A beautiful bathroom that suits you, perfectly. Wet rooms the essential guide

Want a wet room, but not sure whether it will work in your home? Read on for the advantages, disadvantages and expert design tips. With a wide range of wet room styles to suit every taste, they are becoming more popular and they're a great way to add value to your home. CAN ANYONE HAVE A WET ROOM? In theory, yes. A wet room is basically a shower room that does away with the shower screen and tray, and has an open, fully tiled shower area. If your bathroom is on the small side you probably will need to include a shower screen to prevent everything getting sprayed. WATER DRAINAGE Installing a wet room is a job for the professionals as a gradient needs to be created along the floor to channel the shower water into a drain and then the entire room needs to be tanked (waterproofed). The most common method for creating a gradient is to install a sub-floor made 182 JANUARY2017

from WBP Ply (a type of plywood), which is then tiled over. Another option is to install a ready-made sloping shower former (a bit like a giant shower tray), which is also then tiled over. A final method is to use a giant preformed tray that slopes towards a drain, and can be fitted across the entire floor without the need for tiling over. WATERPROOFING Waterproofing the wet room involves priming the floor, the lower section of the walls and the whole of the wall area around the shower and then covering with a syrupy membrane. Once it's set, the room is then tiled. It's also worth raising the bathroom door threshold by about 5mm from the floor in case the room fills with water (if someone covers the shower drain with a towel, for example). This will keep the water contained. ADVANTAGES OF A WET ROOM A wet room is super-stylish and perfect for creating a contemporary look. As a second bathroom, a wet room can easily increase the value of your home. Great for small bathrooms - removing the bath creates loads more space. Wet rooms are, in general, easier to clean.

There's no shower screen or tray to worry about and if you go for a wall-hung sink and toilet, it's easier still. If it's done properly, your floor is better protected than it would be in a standard bathroom. DISADVANTAGES OF A WET ROOM In small bathrooms, watch out for wet towels caused by spray from the shower. You'll need a professional fitter to waterproof the room - if it's not done properly leaking water can cause damage. Wet rooms should be tiled from floor to ceiling - and that's expensive. And if you go for porous stone tiles, they may need to be resealed every few months, which is hard work. Swapping a main bathroom with a bath for a wet room could make your home less saleable - buyers want at least one bath. The cost of installing a wet room is usually between ÂŁ5,000 and ÂŁ10,000. If you are paying a company to tank and install the wet room, including floor-to-ceiling tiles, suite and shower, expect to pay more. Retailers can offer you some ideas or may sell you those little extras you need to complete your wet room.

Stylish flooring ideas

for your bathroom

Finding the perfect floor design for your bathroom will add the finishing touch to your brand new look. A bathroom floor needs to be both durable and stylish to meet all of your needs and should give your bathroom a strong and solid foundation.

W

ith so much choice available, it can be hard to decide on one option. Take into consideration your daily routine and lifestyle: Do you have children who will need a slip-free and hardwearing floor? Or do you have a glamorous and grown-up bathroom suite that requires an equally chic floor? Don't be afraid to try unusual materials, such as wood, which can work well in a bathroom, despite any concerns you might have about the humid conditions affecting the wood. Try hardwood, laminate or PVC flooring to get the same effect, but without the damp results. Floors in marble, granite or polished concrete will also create a dramatic effect and lend a chic, polished finish to your bathroom. These are all hard-wearing materials that will look stunning and last for years. For something truly unique, try cork or rubber. Popular in the 1960s and 1970s, cork is back in a big way and is one of the most eco-friendly floor options around. Rubber is warm, waterproof and easy to keep clean, so a great option for anyone with children. Solid wood or laminate floors aren't usually suitable for bathrooms as the humidity will cause the material to discolour, swell and warp. But hardwood floorings, such as teak and bamboo, can work well (double-check with the manufacturer first) and engineered wood and bathroom-specific laminate - made with PVC - are designed to withstand moisture. 188 JANUARY2017
