the Regent Street App Europe’s first shopping street to pioneer a personalised mobile phone app with Beacon technology. Technology provides exclusive offers tailored to shoppers’ preferences while keeping their data private.
T
he app uses Bluetooth technology to communicate with beacons in each store so that as shoppers walk past, they receive alerts direct to their mobile phone about a range of things, from information about new products and upcoming events to exclusive offers only available to those shopping on the Street that day. Beacon technology is a new innovation which has only previously been trialled by a handful of individual retailers; this is the first time the technology has been employed across an entire shopping street. The app is free to download from the app store. As well as providing content, the app is also intuitive, building a profile for each shopper so that the content they receive is tailored to their individual preferences. It will also enable shoppers to better explore what the street has to offer, helping them plan their visits and introducing them to new brands that align with their interests, all while maintaining their anonymity. The introduction of the app forms part of the £1bn Regent Street regeneration programme being delivered by The Crown Estate, which has already seen an array of internationally renowned brands like Burberry, J Crew, Karl Lagerfeld and & Other Stories and soon to open Watches of Switzerland. David Shaw, Head of The Crown Estate’s Regent Street portfolio said: “This is a fantastic example of how Regent Street is continuing to evolve as the world’s most successful shopping destination, bringing together online, physical and now mobile retailing to provide an
1 6 j u ly 2 0 1 4
experience which delivers across all of the platforms that appeal to 21st century shoppers.” Paul Lorraine, UK General Manager of Longchamp said: “Success in retail in the 21st century is strongly linked to how you engage your customers in store and online. Regent Street already has a reputation as being the place to be for brands like ours and the new mobile app will bring the digital and physical together, providing an exciting new way for us to speak to our customers.” The app is being introduced in conjunction with the Regent Street Association, which represents the Street’s retailers. “We are delighted Regent Street is the first shopping street in Europe to utilise beacon technology. The retailers have embraced this initiative and understanding it is the ways forward, fully support the digital advancements. The Regent Street app is ideal as it enables the customer to choose the brands they wish connect to with out it tracking their personal data. This is perfect for Regent Street.” Annie Walker, Director Regent Street Association. the Regent Street app now freely available to download from the App Store http://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/regent-street/id880921803?mt=8 www.regentstreetonline.com RegentStreetOnline.com facebook.com/RegentStreetOfficial twitter.com/RegentStreetW1 instagram.com/RegentStreetW1

T
he intimate London festival has been commended, not only for its selection of headliners over the years, but for bringing up-andcoming acts to the forefront in their support slots. Artists like Alt J, Chet Faker, Chloe Howl and Miles Kane are amongst those who have been booked in the past to open the gigs. London’s favourite songstress, Jessie Ware went from supporting Paloma Faith in 2012 to headlining a sold-out show the next year. Opening Summer Series in 2014, D.D. Dumbo will play at Daughter’s show on 10th July. Oliver Hugh Perry’s unconventional coupling of West African Blues and minimal art pop is making waves around the world and in his native Australia. Since igniting the blogosphere with their track, ‘Set My Heart’, Sons & Lovers have built up an impressive touring record, going on the road with the likes of Ellie Goulding, One Republic and they will be supporting Kodaline on 11th July. Emerging talent, Laura Doggett has been selected to support Agnes Obel on 12th July. Her striking and unique voice has earnt her fans within the industry and she will be making waves this summer. Anyone who shares a stage with festival favourites, The Cat Empire needs to match their renowned and unforgettable stage presence. On 13th July, London-based singer songwriter and world-class harpist Lucinda Belle, will bring her ‘rockabilly gypsy jazz’ to Summer Series. With a new album and a sound which is contemporary with the sentimentality of 1930s and 40s songwriting and the sex appeal and style of the 50s and 60s, she is sure to wow. A night for strong and soulful vocals, Jess Glynne will open for Kelis on 14th July. With two number ones under her belt (for collaborations with Route 94 and fellow Summer Series act Clean Bandit) she is set to take the UK by storm this year, with her new single ‘Right Here’ set for release in July. Kyla La Grange joins Bastille on 15th July with the Somerset House audience. With the arrival of her ‘Cut Your Teeth’ album, Kyla’s music is brighter, bolder, and more colourful, with a subtly emotional electronic pop smartness. François and The Atlas Mountains have been selected for the Franz Ferdinand date on 16th July. Domino’s first French signing, the band bring a dose of vibrant French charm with tales of romance and fantasy set to danceable rhythms and sophisticated pop melodies.

Emilie Nicolas has been added to the Churches date for the festival this year on 17th July. The Norwegian songwriter has been making lasting impressions with her minimal and meloncholy pop gems. Praised for her spell binding stage set up and visuals, festival-goers can expect a truly unforgettable performance. Having already worked on music for two Summer Series acts – a remix for Bastille and co-production for Clean Bandit – MNEK is the perfect addition to the line-up this year on 18th July. The 19 year-old Grammy nominated producer joins Sam Smith at the event. Praised for production credits on tracks from the likes of Duke Dumont, Rudimental and Gorgon City, he will shine a light on his own music with his forthcoming debut album. Canadian singer-songwriter, Kiesza has been chosen as support for Clean Bandit on 19th July. Having written for Rihanna, Kylie Minogue and Icona Pop, her number one single, ‘Hideaway’ this year, propelled her to chart topping artist in her own right. Unplugged Summer Series New for 2014, Unplugged Summer Series at Somerset House with American Express® will feature free lunchtime acoustic sets by emerging new talent from 17 – 19 July. 2014 Concours of Elegance at H am p ton C o u rt Pa l ace 5 t h - 7 t h S e p tem b er 2014
From the inaugural Concours of Elegance of 2012, held within the private grounds of Windsor Castle to mark Her Majesty the Queen’s diamond jubilee of reign, the award-winning Concours has set a new global benchmark for a classic car concours event. 2 2 j u ly 2 0 1 4
c ov e r s to ry
T
he second Concours of Elegance, held to equal acclaim at the Royal Palace of St James, London in 2013, improved upon the exceptionally high stand set at Windsor Castle, and this year, the Concours once again retains its Royal Palace connections, moving to the spectacular surroundings of Hampton Court, Palace near London, from 5th-7th September.
Sixty of the highest calibre of rare and desirable cars have been painstakingly selected and invited to the Concours of Elegance at Hampton Court Palace, to be joined by hundreds of the very best cars from a wide variety of leading car clubs, as well as the very latest bespoke sports cars and luxury models from a number of prestigious car manufacturers, to create the ultimate motoring summer garden party in a historic and uniquely British setting. This September’s Concours of Elegance will dramatically tell the story of the motor car through each of the 60 carefully selected vehicles. From the pioneering days of the horseless carriage in the late 19th Century, right through to the very latest state-of-the-art 200 mph+ ‘hypercar’, the 60 exceptional Concours cars – many of them never seen before in this country – will grace the Fountain Gardens on the East side of the historic Hampton Court Palace. From an ultra-rare 1896 Lutzmann and on through the decades to the finest contemporary machinery, including the very latest, state-of-the-art Ferrari LaFerrari, the majority of historically important and sought-after car marques will be represented at the Concours of Elegance. Ranging from Alfa Romeo to Zagato, visitors to the Hampton Court Palace Concours will be able to admire stunning examples of Rolls-Royce, Bugatti, Bentley, Hispano-Suiza, Ferrari, Packard, Aston Martin and Maserati, plus many other fine marques, making this is an unmissible occasion for anyone who appreciates the inherent creative magnificence of great automobiles. A taster of the 60 exceptional cars already confirmed for the 2014 Concours of Elegance includes a stunning Alfa Romeo 6C 1750, built specifically for the 1931 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, where it was accompanied by model Josette Pozzo, and together they fittingly took the prized Coppa d’Oro di Villa d’Este trophy. The historically significant Alfa Romeo will make its UK debut at the 2014 Concours of Elegance. A brace of significant and rare pre-war Mercedes-Benz models will also be present at Hampton Court Palace. Supporting the Concours will be a display of over 350 other desirable cars
from all eras within the grounds of Hampton Court Palace on the Saturday and Sunday, within a dedicated area, adjacent to the Concours, presented by a wide variety of car clubs and motor manufacturers. For the first time, a Club Trophy will be presented to the very best car to have won its own car club concours events earlier in 2014, in recognition of the spirit and dedication of Car Club owners, and their support of the grass roots concours movement in the UK. The major prestige car clubs in the UK have been invited to send the winning cars from their own car clubs’ concours events along to Hampton Court Palace, to be then judged for the coveted Club Trophy on Saturday 6 September. Fittingly, the Royal Automobile Club will be coordinating the judging for this new prestigious prize. Ultimately the overall Club Trophy winner will be named the British ‘Historic Car of the Year.’ In addition to being awarded the coveted Club Trophy, the overall winner will also automatically be one of the 60 cars to be entered into the line-up for the 2015 Concours of Elegance event, to be held at an as-yet unspecified British Royal Palace. Also new for 2014 is the Talking Concours, a live stage are to help bring the Concours of Elegance to life, and give a live platform for regular interviews and informal chats with interesting guest speakers, from the world of classic cars, motor sport and fashion, including advise on preparing a car for concours by Autoglym, plus experts from RM Auctions discussing current classic car market trends. A tempting selection of hospitality and picnic options are available at the 2014 Concours of Elegance, to suit all tastes and budgets, for the perfect British summer garden party. Post-Concours, RM Auctions will be holding its London sale of fine collectors cars at Battersea on Monday 8 September. Adult entry tickets available to purchase from £25 per person, per day, including entry into Hampton Court Palace and its extensive grounds. Tickets can be purchased in advance at the Concours of Elegance website www.concoursofelegance.co.uk Limited edition Concours of Elegance Posters and Concours of Elegance Souvenir Catalogues are also available.

IT DOESN’T GET ANY T
he Fish Media management were selected from a pool of premium media by Relevance, the PR agency in Monaco, and invited to the Monaco Grand Prix to get a taste of French Riviera lifestyle. On the Saturday of the Grand Prix qualifications, Rory and I got up and set off on a weekend to remember. We were fast tracked through Gatwick Airport by the excellent No. 1 Traveller to get to our Monarch flights. The flight to Nice was a breeze and 45 minutes after hitting the tarmac, we were in the prestigious Paddock Lounge overlooking the qualification. The Paddock Lounge is part of the 5-star luxury Hermitage Hotel, one of Monte-Carlo SBM’s delightful hotels in the Principality (www.montecarlosbm.com).SBM provides an exclusive F1 concept with a terrace which overlooks the superyachts of Monaco’s Port Hercule. “The Paddock Lounge is part of the 5-star luxury Hermitage Hotel, one of Monte-Carlo SBM’s delightful hotels in the Principality” For Q2 we headed over for lunch at the famous Café de Paris. Our concierge, Hélène, from Monte-Carlo SBM led us up a back stairway to avoid the crowds and we were soon seated in the shade of the Monte-Carlo Casino, overlooking the casino turn.
A “once in a lifetime” weekend in Monaco to watch the Monaco Grand Prix 2014 in luxurious style…….

Lunch was an excellent buffet accompanied by an exciting side-dish of the controversial Lewis Hamilton battle with Nico Rosberg to secure pole position. The service was simply excellent and the company great. The Café de Paris is a splendid place to catch up on what is happening around the entire track on a large screen. We moved on to the Hotel de Paris terrace for Q3, overlooking the Massanet corner.

BETTER THAN THIS Watching the drivers pull through the gears from the long straight and head into this corner was hair-raising and really every reason why you should come to the Grand Prix in Monaco.
up white chocolate bavarois and key limes in a strawberry cup with fresh raspberry. Each course was accompanied by an exquisite complementary wine, expertly selected by Grand Cros (www.grandcros.com).
Before we knew it, we were whisked away in the chauffeured black Mercedes to get a taste of the French Riviera. Our first stop was a penthouse on the 34th and 35th floors in the Château Perigord, offered for sale by La Costa Properties Monaco luxury real estate (www.lacosta-propertiesmonaco.com/en/), which is the leading agency in the Principality with a stunning portfolio of prime properties. This dream penthouse overlooks Monte-Carlo with panoramic sea views, from a commanding position.
French Riviera property expert, Philip Weiser gave us the benefit of his 30 years real estate experience on the Cote D’Azur with an overview of the region’s property market. Sleep was easy to come by under the sumptuous covers of the Sylviane beds and with race day upon us, we set off for Monte-Carlo.
Moving away from the bright lights, we headed through towards Valbonne, a quaint Provençal Roman village. Our party was welcomed at the Domaine de la Sylviane (www.domaine-la-sylviane.com), a delightful ancient monastery available to rent with Carlton International (www. carlton-international.com/en). We were accommodated in the former monks’ cells, now comfortably converted into cosy, Provençal style bedrooms. We toasted our beautiful surroundings with a delicious light and bright champagne selected by Ayala(www.champagne-ayala. fr/en). Chef Emmanuel Sofonea (www. unchefchezvous.com) provided scrumptious toasts with salmon before moving on to a gourmet four course meal with amazing produce and ingredients provided by Froggy Gourmet (www.froggygourmet.fr). Finding enough energy after this back-to-back day, we moved up to the bar where we lapped
where the pool party had already started and champagne was duly sprayed. A very memorable and almost regal 48 hours in Monte-Carlo. Monarch fly to Nice from London Gatwick. Flights London Gatwick start at £32.99 each way. Please note that taxes and fees apply and customers are reminded that checked baggage, extra leg room seats and on board meals should be booked in advance for the best price. (www.monarch.co.uk).
“It doesn’t get better than this” cried one of the journalists in our party. It was a truly apt comment as we were introduced to THE spot of the Grand Prix by Claudia Batthyany: The Fairmont Monte Carlo overlooking the most famous bend in the world. The Grand Prix track view room accommodates up to 12 people. Four night packages start at 6,700 Euros (www.fairmont.com/monte carlo). Philip, the executive chef at Nobu, Fairmont Monte-Carlo arrived and dosed us with champagne and delightful canapés. Once the race started with Nico Rosberg in pole, the engine noise echoed around the skyscrapers of Monte-Carlo making the experience almost deafening. One feels quite almighty watching the most skilled drivers on the planet racing the most advanced human driving machines up high with a glass of champagne in hand. After an ecstatic couple of hours of speed, crashes and intense competition, Nico Roseberg won with Lewis Hamilton right behind. We then ascended up to the roof

WIMBLEDON 2014
HIGHLIGHTS
Andy Murray crashed out of Wimbledon in the quarter-finals against Grigor Dimitrov. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were left despondent in the Royal Box while Murray’s girlfriend Kim Sears was stony-faced as she hurried out of Centre Court.
A
fter the game, Murray admitted: “ I just didn’t play well today and he played much better than me from the beginning to the end. That’s not going to add up to a good day at the office.” He revealed he would take a few days off following the defeat, but “ probably won’t be on a beach”. The reigning champion was cheered on by a host of famous names in the Royal Box, including actor Hugh Grant, comedian Michael McIntyre, Princess Beatrice and England rugby union coach Stuart Lancaster. The Scot’s fans inside Centre Court were left disappointed by the defeat.
For the third year in a row, Rafael Nadal made an early exit from Wimbledon after a stunning loss to a player ranked 100th or worse. Nick Kyrgios, a 19-year-old wild card from Australia with a world ranking of 144, served 37 aces and used a fearless go-for-broke style to beat the No. 1-ranked Nadal 7-6 (5), 5-7, 7-6 (5), 6-3 to reach the quarterfinals. Playing in his first Wimbledon and second major, Kyrgios is the first player outside the top 100 to defeat a No. 1 at a Grand Slam since No. 193 Andrei Olhovskiy downed Jim Courier in the third round at Wimbledon in 1992. Kyrgios served out the match at love, hitting an 3 4 j u ly 2 0 1 4
ace on match point. He’s the first man to get to the quarterfinals in his Wimbledon debut in 10 years.
MENS SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE Novak Djokovic wins the Wimbledon men’s singles final in a thrilling, nailbiting five-set match against Roger Federer. Federer won the opening set of the clash in a tense tie-break, before Novak Djokovic took the next two sets. Djokovic, the higher ranking player, appeared to struggle with injury at times but looked dominant in the three middle sets. It appeared that the match was in the Serbian’s hands after he broke Federer in the fourth – but the Swiss sportsman won an impressive five games back-to-back and went onto take the fourth set by seven games to five. Both men showed signs of fatigue in the final set. It was the first five-set Wimbledon men’s single final since the 2009 clash between Federer and Andy Roddick. However, it was Djokovic who rose to the challenge of the final set - winning it six games to four. It was a great match to be a part of”, Djokovic said after the match. He joked with Federer, who he called a “great athlete” and a “role model for many children”, saying: “Thank you for letting me win today.”
LADIES SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE Petra Kvitova defeats Eugenie Bouchard 6-3, 6-0 to win the 2014 Wimbledon Women’s Championship. With a masterful performance, sixth-seeded
f e at u r e
Petra Kvitova dominated No. 13 Eugenie Bouchard to win her second Wimbledon title by a score of 6-3, 6-0. The 24-year-old played a nearperfect game, backing up her powerful serves and returns with impressive agility as she moved around the court, limiting Bouchard’s opportunities to take control. The fast-paced match featured mostly short rallies, with Kvitova finding ways to win points on both sides of the service game. For 20-year-old Bouchard, her first appearance in a Grand Slam final is another step forward in her impressive rise this season. She didn’t play badly on Saturday; she just couldn’t find a way to get the best of Kvitova. For her part, the 24-yearold Czech backs up her 2011 Wimbledon title with what could be the most impressive match of her career, signalling that she’s a force to be reckoned with one again in women’s tennis. A well-deserved victory for Petra Kvitova.
MEN’S DOUBLES CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE American Jack Sock and and Canadian Vasek Pospisil win the men’s doubles title against the Bryan brothers in five long sets. The scratch pair, who only signed up days before the draw, eventually triumphed 7-6 (7-5) 6-7 (3-7) 6-4 3-6 7-5 in just over three hours. They are ranked 99 and 94 respectively in the world doubles rankings and claimed their first title together. Sock, aged 21 years 285 days, is the third youngest man in the Open era to win both a Grand Slam men’s doubles title and a Grand Slam mixed doubles title, having previously won the 2011 US Open mixed doubles title with fellow American Melanie Oudin. Bob and Mike Bryan, the top seeds, were seeking their 16th Grand Slam title. Despite the disparity in rankings there was little to separate the two pairs in the opening two sets which were decided by tie-breaks. The Bryan brothers, seeking their 99th career title, hit back, converting one of their two break points in the next to take the match into a deciding fifth set.
WOMEN’S DOUBLES CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci claim women’s doubles title to complete career Grand Slam together. The Italians overwhelmed Hungarian Timea Babos and Frenchwoman Kristina Mladenovic under the roof on Centre Court, claiming a 6-1 6-3 victory. Vinci fired down a service winner to clinch it, prompting Errani to fall to the turf in celebration. Vinci embraced her before the pair raced up to the players’ box to embrace friends and family. Errani and Vinci have been the dominant doubles team in the women’s game since 2012, the year in which they won the French Open and US Open. They added the Australian Open title last year and made a successful defence in January. This year’s victory makes them the fifth women’s team to complete the career Grand Slam, and the first since Serena and Venus Williams achieved the feat in 2001.
MIXED DOUBLES CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE Nenad Zimonjic of Serbia and 2011 U.S. Open singles champion Samantha Stosur of Australia won the Wimbledon mixed doubles title with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Max Mirnyi of Belarus and Taiwan’s Chan Hao-ching. Zimonjic and Stosur broke their opponents’ service in the third game of the second set to put them on the way to their first Grand Slam title together. Stosur, who won the U.S. Open women’s singles in 2011, won a Grand Slam mixed doubles title for the third time, including with Bob Bryan at Wimbledon in 2008. Zimonjic said he and Stosur had plenty of confidence. “I think it doesn’t matter who is on the other side, if we are playing good, we can win against anyone on that day,” he said. This is the tournament that I always dreamed of winning,” he continued. “This is the best tournament in the world”. j u ly 2 0 1 4 3 5

Lost Studios of London
words By Jonathan Futrell
I
You cannot visualize the soundtrack of London, but shown the streets and buildings where many of the classic pop and rock tracks were recorded, you can feel it; the beat, the melody, and the glamour of legend.
n it’s 80th year PPL, set up by the music industry to ensure that record companies, musicians and performers are fairly paid for the use of their recorded music in public and in broadcast, is celebrating some of those forgotten pop and rock shrines: From Barnes’ Olympic Studios, where locals were used to seeing John Lennon’s psychedelic Rolls Royce Phantom V parked outside, which today is a cinema, to Notting Hill’s Basing Street Studios where a galaxy of stars cut ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas’ for African famine relief in the winter of 1984.The music forged within them, and other lost studios, resonates to this day. Decca Studios, Broadhurst Gardens, West Hampstead This red brick Greek Revivalist building is today a rehearsal studio and wardrobe store for the English National Opera. David Bowie recorded his first single, Liza Jane, here in 1964 long before he was famous. The Moody Blues cut nearly all of their hit albums here, and it’s where Peter Green, on studio time bought for him for his birthday by blues man John Mayall, went on to form Fleetwood Mac. However, it is perhaps best known for being the studio where, on January 1, 1962, The Beatles failed their audition for Decca Records. IBC, 35 Portland Place, Marylebone This handsome Georgian town house, close to Regents Park, is today used to demonstrate life-size 3D holograms resurrecting famous musicians throughout history. Popular in its heyday with The Bee Gees, Slade, Cream, Rod Stewart, Gerry Rafferty, and where Jimi Hendrix mastered his debut album, Are You Experienced, IBC was a hit factory churning out tunes with The Small Faces, The Who and Status Quo. The Beatles filmed a live television special here in 1964. One of the house engineers was Joe Meek, who went on to record the first British single to top the US charts, Telstar by the Tornadoes. Maison Rouge, Wansdown Place, Fulham Next time you’re having a pizza in the Fulham Broadway Shopping Centre you may like to dwell on the scores of classic 80s and 90s pop hits recorded just feet away at Maison Rouge Studios. I went there myself once, while George Michael and Andrew Ridgely were making

Wham!’s debut best seller, Fantastic. That smash inspired a slew of other acts: from Power Station, and The Cranberries, to Thin Lizzy, and Blur who recorded Parklife, and The Great Escape within the studio’s unprepossessing two storey red brick exterior; more council house than rock ‘n roll ivory tower. Opening in 1975 it was targeted for demolition in 2000. Olympic Recording Studios, 117-123 Church Road, Barnes “It was absolute hysterical fun,” studio engineer Keith Grant told the Sound On Sound website. “Keith Richards would come and play on somebody else’s records. Lennon’s Rolls Royce would often be outside...they used the place as a floating nightclub...” Grant worked on 120 top 20 hits with acts including The Rolling Stones, The Eagles, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and Dusty Springfield. The ceiling caught fire during the filming of The Stones’ movie Sympathy For The Devil, and Mick Jagger designed the door for Studio 2. It closed in 2009 and today is a successful cinema. Trident, 17 St. Anne’s Court, Soho “Trident Studio was the most important singular studio in the world at a time when music was the most important singular subject,” recalled Harry Nilsson on Radio 1. It’s where Nilsson cut the international smash Without You and forged the infamous drinking friendship with John Lennon. The Beatles used it for Hey Jude because it had the first eight track recording desk in London. The in-house 100 year old Bechstein piano was played on that hit and Elton John’s Your Song. Paul McCartney often block-booked Trident but seldom showed up. Some of his ‘down time’ was handed to Queen who used it to record Bohemian Rhapsody. Today Trident is renowned for voice overs. Established in 1934 PPL is a not-for-profit company which licenses recorded music for broadcast, online and public performance use in the UK and internationally on behalf of record companies and performers, ensuring that all those who invest their time and talent in making recorded music are paid fairly for their work. ppluk.com @PPLUK

Ronnie Wood collection at Canvas Gallery
H
25th July – 6th August 2014
e is one of the world’s most famous guitarists in one of the world’s most famous rock ‘n’ roll bands. But now you have the chance to view and buy a piece of art by rock legend Ronnie Wood. Canvas Gallery, Wimbledon is selling key pieces of Wood’s work from his collection, Raw Instinct. The collection is a breadth of work stretching from 1960 to 2012, featuring distinguished portraits of band mates Mick Jagger, Charlie Watts and Keith Richards, while ‘Skulls On Stage’ and ‘Big Bang Blue’ depict their high energy performances. For art lovers with more traditional tastes, there are also stunning landscapes and paintings of animals, such as ‘Wild Horses’ and ‘Irish Landscape’. “We’ve had a great reception to Wood’s work in the past, so we are absolutely delighted to have this collection here at Canvas Gallery,” said Chris Mabire, owner of the gallery in Wimbledon Village.“You only have to look at the incredible detail to see what a superbly talented artist he is, so we know this collection will be very well received.”

The 67-year-old, who trained at Ealing Art College, has long impressed the art world with his expressive brush work and strong, vibrant colour. Admirers of his work include artist Damien Hirst and art critic Brian Sewell – even his fellow Stones, who were once his toughest critics, profess to love their friend’s works. Ronnie Wood says: “In a secret sort of way, I like the people that I draw to see the way I’ve depicted them. Unlike music, it’s a solo effort. There’s no one else to blame. There is no kind of therapy like the one you have from starting and seeing a picture through to the end.” Wood’s acclaimed collection, which is being exhibited at the gallery comprises signed limited editions, which can be bought from as little as £600, and original paintings that sell for up to £40,000. Wood’s work can be viewed for free at Canvas Gallery, Wimbledon Village, SW19, seven days a week. For more details, telephone 020 8605 2229 or visit www.canvaswimbledon.com.

Iconic Warr’s Harley-Davidson dealership th
Celebrate 90 Anniversary
O
n June 1st 2014 Europe’s oldest and most well-known HarleyDavidson dealership threw its doors open to passionate riders, vintage bike fans and customisation enthusiasts from across the country, to become part of UK Harley history as it celebrates 90 years at the famous King’s Road dealership. In 1924 Captain Frederick James Warr opened a motor bicycle repair shop on London’s King’s Road. That same year he became an agent for the Harley-Davidson Motor Co. of Milwaukee, USA and Warr’s HarleyDavidson was born. At that time the flagship of the Harley range was the ‘Silent Gray Fellow’, which would have cost a princely £85. In 1949, F.J’S son Fred Warr left the Royal Air Force and went to work for his father. Although post-war business was very tough, by the 1960’s, Fred Jnr had become Britain’s Harley-Davidson distributor. In 1999 the company moved into a new purpose built 20,000sq ft dealership designed by architects Kilburn & Nightingale and built on the site of the original 1920’s store. In 2003 a further Harley dealership was opened in Mottingham, South London - just 10 minutes townbound from Junction 3 of the M25. In 2004 at a ceremony in California, Warr’s were honoured by the Harley-Davidson Motor Company for outstanding loyalty and dedication to the brand since 1924 – that’s exactly 90 year’s worth of Harley sales and services. From those early days to present day, Warr’s has been synonymous with Harley-Davidson as Europe’s oldest and certainly most successful

Harley-Davidson dealership Group. Today, Warr’s dealerships are still owned and operated by the Warr family. Former motorcycle racer John Warr has been Managing Director since 1990, and is also the founder and director of both Chelsea & Fulham and Meridian Harley Owners Groups, and a regular participant in the annual London to Brighton Pioneer Run, riding his 1914 ‘Silent Gray Fellow’ Harley Davidson. With a combined value of over £2million, the Warr’s Museum displayed the largest ever collection of historic Harleys this side of America. World War 2 WL model bikes, which inspired the Harley used in 2011 movie ‘Captain America’, as well as The Model K that shot to fame in the late-50s when a young Elvis Presley posed for the May 1956 cover of The Enthusiast magazine, and later for his “Return of The Rocker” album cover. For the first time ever, Warr’s Harley-Davidson revealed the most unique and innovative custom bikes that have been designed and built by their in-house experts, Kings Road Customs. With the likes of Formula One racing driver Jenson Button and Top Gear’s Richard Hammond amongst their devoted customer base, this is the ultimate destination for bespoke build custom Harleys in Europe. Volunteers queue to enlist outside a recruiting office in 1914
We Will Never Forget... 2014 marks the centenary since the start of the First World War. orld War 1, often known as the First World War, began on July 28, W 1914 when and lasted until November 11, 1918. D ifferences in foreign policies were to blame, although the immediate cause was the assassination of Austria’s Archduke Ferdinand. S oldiers fought largely in trenches, and thousands suffered death and serious injury, as well as fear and no doubt loneliness. The British and French trenches were often squalid, whereas the German trenches were almost luxurious in comparison, with bunks and decent cooking facilities. M any new weapons were invented or first used during World War 1. Big Bertha was one of the most famous; it was a 48 ton gun capable of firing a shell over 9 miles. It took 200 men several hours to assemble the gun. T anks were so called because of early attempts to disguise them as water tanks. Cannons and artillery were often extremely loud. In 1917, the explosives used to destroy a bridge in France could be heard over 130 miles away in London. The war drew in all the world’s economic great powers, which were assembled in two opposing alliances: the Allies (based on the Triple Entente of the United Kingdom, France and the Russian Empire) and the Central Powers of Germany and Austria-Hungary. Although Italy had also been a member of the Triple Alliance alongside Germany and Austria-Hungary, it did not join the Central Powers, as Austria-Hungary had taken the offensive against the terms of the alliance. These alliances were both reorganised and expanded as more nations entered the war: Italy, Japan and the United States joined the Allies, and the Ottoman Empire and Bulgaria the Central Powers. Ultimately, more than 70 million military personnel, including 60 million Europeans, were mobilised in one of the largest wars in history. Although a resurgence of imperialism was an underlying cause, the immediate trigger for war was the 28th June 1914 assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary, by Yugoslav nationalist Gavrilo Princip in Sarajevo. This set off a diplomatic crisis when Austria-Hungary delivered an ultimatum to the Kingdom of Serbia, and international alliances formed over the previous decades were invoked. Within weeks, the major powers were at war and the conflict soon spread around the world. On 28th July, the Austro-Hungarians fired the first shots in preparation for the invasion of Serbia. As Russia mobilised, Germany invaded neutral Belgium and Luxembourg before moving towards France, leading Britain to declare war on Germany on 4th August. On 21st August Private John Parr sets out on a cycle to scout near Mons. He is never seen again and becomes the first British soldier to die in the conflict. By the end of 1914, British casualties total 89,864. After the German march on Paris was brought to a halt, what became known as the Western 4 2 j u ly 2 0 1 4
Front settled into a battle of attrition, with a trench line that would change little until 1917. Meanwhile, on the Eastern Front, the Russian army was successful against the Austro-Hungarians, but was stopped in its invasion of East Prussia by the Germans. In November 1914, the Ottoman Empire joined the war, opening fronts in the Caucasus, Mesopotamia and the Sinai. Italy and Bulgaria went to war in 1915, Romania in 1916 and the United States in 1917. Two Army Zeppelins successfully bombed London on 7th–8th September 1915. SL 2 dropped bombs on the Isle of Dogs, Deptford, Greenwich and Woolwich, and LZ 74 was forced to drop weight on its approach and scattered 39 bombs over Cheshunt, before heading on to London and dropped bombs on Bermondsey, Rotherhithe and New Cross. Eighteen people were killed and 28 injured, property damage totalled £9,616. Fog and mist prevented any aircraft taking off, but anti-aircraft guns fired at LZ 74 with no effect. Although these raids had no significant military impact, the psychological effect was considerable. July 1st 1916 was day one of the Battle of the Somme. The first wave of the 100,000 men in the Kitchener battalions. For many of the young soldiers, their first taste of battle will be their last. By day’s end, the battlefield is littered with 57,000 British casualties, including 19,000 dead. In Britain, newspapers were listing the names of the victims for weeks to come. More raids on London was to follow and the sixth was on 24th–25th August 1916 when 13 Navy Zeppelins were launched and Heinrich Mathy’s L 31 reached London; flying above low clouds, 36 bombs were dropped in 10 minutes on West Ferry Road, Deptford Dry Dock, the station at Norway Street and homes in Greenwich, Eltham and Plumstead. Nine people were killed, 40 injured and £130,203 of damage was caused. L 31 suffered no damage in the attack but several weeks of repair-work were needed following a hard landing. 29th January 1918 saw the first raid undertaken by Giants unaccompanied by Gothas. Four aircraft from Rfa 501 took off, one turning back before reaching England. Casualties and damage were light. 80 defence sorties were flown, and one Giant was attacked by no less than five aircraft, one attack succeeding in disabling one of its engines. British fighter pilots’ efforts against the Giants were handicapped by poor intelligence work: although the existence of these aircraft was known, the information had not been passed on, and many pilots must have underestimated the range from which they were firing. Rfa 501 attacked by itself again on 16th February. Four aircraft reached England, one carrying a single 1,000 kg (2205 lb) bomb which, aimed at Victoria station, fell half a mile away on the Royal Hospital, Chelsea. A single aircraft attacked the following night, hitting St. Pancras station. 21 people were killed and 32 injured. Another all-Giant raid took place on 7th March: five aircraft reached England and again one was carrying a 1,000 kg bomb. This fell on Warrington Crescent near Paddington station: among the dead was Lena Ford, who had written the lyrics of the popular wartime song Keep the Home Fires Burning. The war approached a resolution after the Russian government collapsed in
f e at u r e

March 1917 and a subsequent revolution in November brought the Russians to terms with the Central Powers. The last Zeppelin raid on Britain took place on 5th August 1918 when four Zeppelins bombed targets in the Midlands and the North of England. On 4th November 1918 the Austro-Hungarian empire agreed to an armistice. After a 1918 German offensive along the western front, the Allies drove back the Germans in a series of successful offensives and began entering the trenches. Germany, which had its own trouble with revolutionaries, agreed to an armistice on 11th November 1918, ending the war in victory for the Allies. By the end of the war, four major imperial powers—the German, Russian, Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman empires—ceased to exist. The successor states of the former two lost substantial territory, while the latter two were dismantled. The map of Europe was redrawn, with several independent nations restored or created. The League of Nations formed with the aim of preventing any repetition of such an appalling conflict. This aim failed, with weakened states, renewed European nationalism and the German feeling of humiliation contributing to the rise of fascism and the conditions for World War II. The armistice ending the slaughter is signed at 5.10am on 11th November 1918, hostilities will cease at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. But another 2,000 men die before the guns fall silent. By the end of World War One, nine million soldiers had been killed, and another 21 million wounded. Over a million soldiers were killed in the infamous Battle of the Somme alone, including about 30,000 in just one day. Back home, jubilant crowds flood the streets to celebrate the end of the war.
WE WILL REMEMBER… This long and insufferable conflict is remembered for being one of the worst in world history, claiming the lives of over 16 million people across the globe. In order to commemorate the centenary of this event, the UK government is working alongside partners including Imperial War Museums, Heritage Lottery Fund and the Commonwealth War Graves Commission to create a programme of cultural events and activities. In London there will be a variety of projects to raise awareness of the Great War including insightful lectures and talks, as well as workshops and art exhibitions. In addition structures and spaces will be specially created to honour the soldiers and civilians who died. The conflict’s Victoria Cross heroes will be honoured in the communities from where they set off to battle. Each one of the 430 men awarded the British Empire’s highest medal for military valour will have their name enshrined in a paving stone in their home town. They will be installed in prominent spots over the four years on the 100th anniversary of the action for which each medal was issued. Each will incorporate an electronic reader which passers-by will

be able to scan using their smartphones to learn more about the serviceman honoured. The first two slabs will be laid in August 2014 for Sidney Godley of East Grinstead, West Sussex, and Charles Garforth of Willesden Green in London. Visitors will discover the story of the First World War when the Imperial War Museum re-opens on 19th July 2014 with new permanent First World War Galleries where visitors can discover the story of the war, how it started, why it continued, how it was won and its global impact. The exhibition looks at the lives of those who experienced it on the front line and the home front and includes a recreated trench with a Sopwith Camel fighter plane swooping low overhead and a Mark V tank looming above. Visitors are immersed in trench live through periscopes, a dug-out, soundscape and projection showing what daily life was like for the troops just behind the front line on the Western Front. Part of the National Maritime Museum’s commemoration of World War One, Forgotten Fighters: the First World War at Sea explores the naval and maritime dimensions of the conflict in a new gallery display opening in August 2014. Through a wide range of objects including weaponry, photographs, medals and ship models, the epic scale of the war at sea is remembered. Forgotten Fighters puts the spotlight on the personal stories, from the heroism of merchant mariners to the realities of naval battle. The BBC is planning a First World War centenary season of around 2,500 hours of television, radio and online programming over four years. The programming will include documentaries, drama, arts and music, commemorative programmes and programmes for children and schools. Across the globe communities and individuals will come together to mark and remember the lives of those who lived, fought and died. Remembrance Day Remembrance Day is a memorial day which takes place every year so that countries in the Commonwealth can remember members of the armed forces who have lost their lives serving their country. Remembrance Day is always 11th November (11/11). It was on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, that combat in World War 1 came to an end in 1918. Remembrance Day has been observed since 1919. Why do we wear poppies on Remembrance Day? The poppy was one of the first flowers to bloom on the battlefields of Flanders during World War 1. Their bright red colour symbolised the blood shed during the horrific conflict, but also the hope of new life, and the poppy became the symbol of Remembrance Day. Today, poppies are worn on clothing in the days leading up to Remembrance Day, and poppy wreaths are placed on war memorials. In the UK, poppies can be bought from The Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal. The money raised goes to help veterans of the armed services. Heroic soldiers that in fighting for their country lost their lives, encountered catastrophic injuries, endured horror and fear, and lost comrades.

New exhibition at London Transport Museum to commemorate the centenary of the start of the First World War
major exhibition entitled Goodbye Piccadilly – from Home Front to Western Front is now showing at London Transport Museum. The exhibition presents London Transport Museum’s unique perspective on the First World War, exploring how the conflict accelerated social change, how it impacted on the lives of Londoners and the essential role undertaken by bus service staff and buses in the war effort, at home and abroad. A key theme of the exhibition is to examine the lives of women who were employed on a large scale to do the jobs previously occupied by men, including working as bus conductors and mechanics on London buses and as porters and guards on the Underground. The exhibition brings together objects from several collections for the first time, at the heart of which will be ‘Ole’ Bill’, a 1911 B-type bus No. B43 on loan from the Imperial War Museum. This bus was one of over 1,000 B-type buses to be requisitioned by the War Department in 1914 for use on the Western Front. After the war it was refurbished as a permanent memorial to the role played by London buses in the First World War.

“It takes more than just a good set of exam results to get into the very best universities”
I
ndependent Sixth Form Colleges have come a long way since they first appeared in the UK as ‘crammers’ designed to coach students into Oxbridge. Now the 100 or so institutions of this type around the country show an awareness that it takes more than just a good set of exam results to get into the very best universities. Whilst these establishments still pride themselves on their high expectations of exam success, most have evolved into nurturing environments which foster personal development and career ambitions as much as they do academic ability. They also have a range of extra-curricular activities available to students, as well as dedicated programmes for entry into the more competitive degree courses like Medicine, Law and Economics. With an average class size of six, an Independent Sixth Form provides a transition point between school and university. Lessons become more like seminars where passionate subject specialists can give

students the individual attention they need to develop personal confidence and foster robust critical thinking skills. Students find that they are empowered to take more responsibility for their studies and their life choices. Principal James Eytle of Albemarle Independent College in Mayfair writes “We provide each student with their own Curriculum Manager and Personal Tutor so that their academic progress is closely monitored and they have the benefit of expertise with respect to career advice and university admissions. We see the learning process as a successful partnership between students, tutors and parents. When students leave Albemarle, they remain very much a part of our extended family, and they are able to call on us at any time for advice and support.” A list of Independent Sixth Form Colleges in your area can be found at www.sixth-form.com.

Sketch David Shrigley to create major new commission for sketch with interiors by India Mahdavi
Celebrated British artist, David Shrigley, has transformed the gallery restaurant at sketch as part of a long-term programme of artist-conceived restaurants at the iconic London venue. aunching on 6th June 2014, The Gallery at sketch has been refurbished by Paris based architect and designer India Mahdavi, who has created a backdrop for David Shrigley’s artwork. The project follows the huge success of Turner Prize-winning artist Martin Creed’s sketch restaurant commission in 2012. 239 new works will line the restaurant’s walls, forming the largest group of original drawings David Shrigley has ever exhibited. The drawings, touching on the grand themes of life, death and beyond, will offer points of departure for diners to muse on. The exhibition continues to the restaurant tables: Shrigley has understood the dining table as an auxiliary exhibition space, a platform for the presentation of new work by himself and Master Chef, Pierre Gagnaire. The work will comprise new ceramic tableware, manufactured by British heritage brand Caverswall featuring Shrigley’s distinctive mordant drawings and texts, in a holistic interaction with Gagnaire’s food. To give the drawings and ceramics room to breathe, India Mahdavi has conceived a clean, strikingly simple interior that updates an archetypal brasserie design with a very contemporary splash of pink on both walls and velvet-covered custom-made furniture. The classic, almost bourgeois design invites a deliberately playful contrast with the witty, outré art works; all is most certainly not what it seems. India Mahdavi was delighted to accept Mourad Mazouz’s invitation to create a new setting for David Shrigley’s installation. She says, ‘The location and space are the starting point of any of my projects and each project is like an open question, for which there is a unique answer. Each project tells that inner story.’

From July 2014, the newly transformed Gallery restaurant will open its doors to its new summer afternoon tea menu. The extensive range of delectable food offerings will be presented on beautiful ceramics designed by David Shrigley himself. Portraying his creativity and mordant humor, Shrigley’s selection of ceramic tableware will include plates demonstrating the restaurants’ location on Conduit Street and an assortment of bespoke afternoon tea accessories featuring a natural extension of the artist’s well known, deliberately limited, technique to combine art with words. ‘I’m delighted to be working with sketch on such an exciting commission. Amongst other things I intend to create all the ceramic tableware for the restaurant. It will be the first artwork that I have made that can go in the dishwasher. It will be very clean artwork.’ adds Shrigley. All ceramics are exclusive to sketch and available to purchase online through the sketch website. In addition, fashion designer Richard Nicoll has been enlisted to create bespoke uniforms for the Gallery restaurant staff to wear. For the girls, the design is a play on Nicoll’s signature T-shirt dress silhouette; for the boys, a smart, grey boiler-suit. The series of artist restaurants at sketch aims to establish a forum for artists’ imaginings and innovations in art, design and social space, creating playful propositions for interaction with art in the public realm. David Shrigley’s project is jointly curated by RSC Contemporary Ltd and Christopher Huynh. Auberge du Lac is the perfect destination for a romantic meal, celebration, business lunch or weekend treat. Overnight accommodation is available within the Brocket Hall estate, in the 16-bedroomed Melbourne Lodge, a converted Georgian coach house.
Describe your style Modern British. I grew up in Oxfordshire in a family of cooks. I have always loved food and am as British as they come! I try to use seasonal ingredients and local produce where possible. I really enjoy taking simple ingredients and turning them into something that tastes great. How do you decide your menu? I work with the seasons and take inspiration from my team. Lots of tasting! Which menu dish do you most enjoy preparing? I enjoy making all the dishes on the menu and don’t have a particular favourite although the Lobster Ravioli is great for the summer. What ingredient is most important to your cooking? Fruits as these create the balance between sweet and savoury dishes.
f e at u r e
lakeside setting overlooking the beautiful broad water with view of the Hall itself. What’s been your best culinary idea? I couldn’t pin down a particular idea but stumbling across foraging has changed my cooking. I love being able to go out for a walk on the estate, find wild herbs, plants and mushrooms and take them back to the kitchen and make something extraordinary out of them. Who did you train under and what did they teach you? I first trained under Gus Ashenford at Chavignol in Chipping Norton. He taught me the classic French techniques that I enjoyed using on local British produce. My time with Claude Bosi and Hibiscus in London taught me finesse in finishing my dishes. What’s your prediction for the next food trend? I don’t really have an opinion on food trends and don’t follow them. I am more interested in the seasons and what makes great tasting food. What’s in your fridge at home? Pots of pureed food and baby milk! I have a 7 month old daughter at home. Favourite quick meal? A great sandwich. Brie de Meaux, cured ham and red onion marmalade – delicious! Top three tips for amateur chefs? Buy best produce available, keep it simple and taste taste taste! Best cookbook? French Provincial Cooking by Elizabeth David

Posh picnics A pretty rug, a basket of mouth-watering foods and wines, and voilà, you’re good to go for some stylish al fresco eating. Once only reserved for wealthy hunters and country people out on their estates, it was the Victorians who popularised the picnic and made it commonplace.
T
here are so many opportunities for you to enjoy a lazy afternoon in the outdoor sun and enjoy a delicious feast at your ideal picnic spot. In a beautiful landscape such as a park, beside the river, the races, or at a public event such as an open air concert. Will you be having a family picnic or a romantic al fresco day out for two? For a slice of romance, pick the most secluded spot you can find. A real romantic hideaway. Do your research, and find somewhere with stunning views, just in case you tire of gazing into each other’s eyes! Go the whole hog and dress up in full evening wear (minus the high heels), nominate a butler and raise a toast to the great outdoors. Plan the menu with care and love. Strawberries are important, as they are romantic foods for a picnic. Have dainty sandwiches, delicate fruits, small cuts of meats and vegetables, some pickles and sauces, and some fine gourmet treats like caviar or truffles. Use real champagne (sparkling wine) glasses. This will mean careful carrying but glass is far more romantic than perspex. And be sure to bring the champagne or sparkling wine to fill those glasses. And don’t forget the bottle opener!
6 0 j u ly 2 0 1 4
Bring along music. Music is crucial to create a romantic atmosphere, if your venue allows it and doesn’t disturb others that prefer a quiet picnic. And for a full-scale Kids Picnic, try the forest for fairy parties and treasure hunts, the park for a mini sports day or the seaside for a picnic and a paddle.. Remember, wear them out and empty plates are guaranteed. No real glasses here! Perspex is certainly the order of the day when planning a children’s picnic. Easy but nutritional foods are a must, with a selection of different nibbles to keep the children interested in the food that you are presenting. Kids love to dip stuff, so this picnic is really easy. Simply buy a selection of dips and things to dip such as fruits and vegetables , bread, pretzels, cookies, and crackers. Don’t forget the wet wipes depending on the ages of your younger guests! Party and outdoor games are essential to keep them amused! You do need to decide whether you would like to create your own charming mix of delicious foods in a pretty basket, or save yourself some time and go with a traditional Fortnum & Mason type hamper. Your personalised hamper can be sourced, packed and delivered to you by a number of high-profile stores in London, with a
choice of luxury ready-to-go fine foods. Hampers ranging from £25 through to several hundred pounds are a big business for retailers, celebrity chefs and restaurants, who market them for weekends in the park, at outdoor movies, the races, or any number of summer outdoor events. That’s perhaps not as much fun as picking and choosing your own temptations from your local deli or farmers market: fill your hamper full of artisan breads, hand-made cheeses, hams, patés and salads, so you can rip, tear and share the food and hold your head high at the Proms in the Park. As for wines, they should be light, pink and preferably sparkling, and champagne for pure luxury! Or go with British tradition and have a tasty cool Pimms….just don’t forget the cool bag and the fruits! If you do have children in tow, a cool fresh lemonade or fruit juices are ideal. You and your guests will need to have something comfy to sit on, and this is dependent on the scale of your picnic – although you can’t beat the traditional picnic blanket, and a couple of fold-up stylish chairs. A parasol may be handy if you like a bit of shade. Bon appetite!

Londoners lack of wine wisdom leaves them blushing
D
espite consuming a whopping 1.59 billion bottles of wine a year, it would seem that British drinkers are far from confident when it comes to selecting, buying and recommending wine. According to new findings from a study commissioned by leading global wine educator, The Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET), London is a city of wine worriers – with 63% of drinkers in the city admitting that they lack confidence in their wine knowledge. The study revealed that 16% of London drinkers sometimes feel embarrassed by their lack of wine know-how and nearly a fifth (19%) of them admitted to pretending to know more than they do on some occasions. No doubt this is in part due to the findings that more than a quarter (27%) of drinkers consider wine knowledge an attractive trait in a potential date. It’s a similar story nationwide and we have become adept at covering up our lack of wine confidence, with nearly nine million2 of us employing the old trick of ordering the second cheapest wine on the menu, probably in a bid to appear more informed. Ian Harris, WSET Chief Executive, says: “There’s no shame at all in not knowing much about the wine in your glass, but it’s a real shame if a lack of confidence means you can’t enjoy it fully. Wine knowledge and the confidence that comes from it, opens the door to an amazing world of discovery, which no wine lover should feel is unobtainable. “There are WSET courses available all over the country, and indeed the world, to suit all levels of knowledge and empower people to experiment with wine and learn more about their individual preferences.” The results show that there’s a real desire for greater wine confidence in the city. Over a third (34%) of all London drinkers think that they would be more experimental with their wine choices if they were better informed about wine and 39% said they were interested in learning more. With enthusiasm like this, there is no reason London won’t soon become a city of confident wine buffs rather than wine bluffs.

Strike a pose in London he sixties were swinging, the seventies went hippie, the eighties spawned punk, the nineties got grunge and today? According to Gity Monsef, Creative Director of Fashion and Textile Museum, “the world is getting smaller - everything crossintegrates. London is a place of eccentricity and creativity and possibilities - it’s more about expression than anywhere else in the world.” The Capital is at the heart of designer and independent fashion with London Fashion Week leading the way. Organised by British Fashion Council and taking place twice a year at the historic Somerset House, prestigious designers present their next season’s collections to a star-studded audience, with high street brands following suite with their own take on new designs from the catwalk. Leading designer brands have made London their home with exclusive boutiques such as Alexander McQueen, Dolce & Gabbana, Burberry, Gucci, Emporio Armani, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Christian Dior and Prada, just some that you can discover on Mayfair’s Bond Street. he already boasts an e-boutique and sells in luxury stores all over the world, but it seems that’s not enough for Victoria Beckham. The designer is to launch the brand’s first flagship store in London’s Dover Street, just a short walk from Old Bond Street, in the autumn. The store will be situated at number 36 - which is currently occupied by sporting store Orvis. This places Victoria at the heart of the capital’s fashion district. Along with her main collection, the new boutique will also house sister range Victoria,Victoria Beckham, as well as accessories, eyewear and denim. Her designs have proved popular with the likes of Beyonce and Gwyneth Paltrow. Up until now, Victoria’s chic clothing line, eyewear and handbags have only been available online, in fashion outlets and department stores, but now her fans will only have to take a trip to Dover Street in order to browse her latest collections. This latest move in her fashion career comes as no surprise, as the 39-year-old star has made no secret of her desire to set up shop. “I think the time is now because I know

my customer,” Victoria Beckham says. “It will be the first time that the people will really be able to see the brand through my eyes. It’s young and cool. There are great galleries in the area. There’s Dover Street Market directly opposite of us, which is not a bad thing.” Spanning 7,000 sq ft over three floors, the superstar has enlisted architect Farshid Moussavi, whose credits include the Museum of Contemporary Art in Cleveland , to renovate the building. Plans include drilling a hole through the middle of the building to link the boutique’s three floors and creating a conceptual interior. Moussavi is a woman who loves fashion as well,” Beckham said “She has quite a conceptual eye, which I like. We want to make something different without making it overly complicated. I just want it to feel real for me.” Victoria Beckham has also revealed that Britain is her strongest market, followed by America - where she recently opened an office in New York. The 4,500 square feet space is for the US wholesale team and a seasonal showroom space. www.victoriabeckham.com

“Designing shoes is magicians work - a shoe should be visible but sometimes needs to be invisible”
Christian Louboutin
If you had to name one designer brand that every woman aspires to and desires more than any other it would have to be Christian Louboutin high heels. Worn by some of the most beautiful women on the planet, Christian Louboutin has become a byword for international glamour.
Maud Frizon, before launching his own first boutique in 1992, in Galerie Vero Dodat, Rue Jean Jacques Rousseau, close to the Louvre Museum. This was followed by New York in 1994, and in 1997, his first London boutique on Motcomb Street. Many more glamorous boutiques and top-end concessions followed.
Christian Louboutin has built one of the most successful shoe brands in the world with a blend of craftsmanship and a distinctive kind of glamour. From razor sharp stilettos and lace-up boots to studded sneakers and bejewelled pumps, Louboutin’s designs carry his unique signature. After leaving school, Louboutin worked at the famous Parisian music hall, the ‘Folies Bergere’. He watched the showgirls, captivated by their flamboyant costumes in which they performed effortlessly in towering heels. He would show up with drawings of shoes for all the dancers. “Ever since I was very young, I have been obsessed with spike heels. It’s all about the legs, how they carry themselves, the embellishment of the body. They are the ultimate icons.”
The designer’s goal has been to “make a woman look sexy, beautiful, to make her legs look as long as [he] can” While he does offer some lower-heeled styles, Louboutin is generally associated with his dressier evening-wear designs incorporating jewelled straps, bows, feathers, patent leather and other similar decorative touches. He is most popularly known for his red-bottom high heel shoes, commonly referred to as “sammy red-bottoms”. The coloured nails, sequins and leather clasp are a playful interpretation of vibrant floral pattern and pastel hues ideally reserved for all spring collections. Christian Louboutin’s footwear and bags for Spring/Summer 2014 collection shows off its sweet side of season.

e l y stHow war shaped menswear
How classic coats and jackets in a man’s wardrobe evolved from the very practical requirements of sport and conflict.
A
drenaline, adversity, adventure. It may surprise the modern man to learn that his everyday clothing was forged in the pursuit of innovative, exhilarating activities. In fact, it is something that Britain has excelled at over the past 100 years, inventing and then adapting clothing to different needs. Each menswear mainstay has its own subtle and often charming story. Some were invented by individuals; others by subcultures around an emerging sport.

While a few have remained virtually unchanged, others have evolved almost beyond recognition. It would be easy to think that such innovation is dead. But models such as the Barbour style coat and the biker jacket are constantly evolving. And it only takes a new pursuit, a new subculture, to spark invention. This adaptation of clothing to particular tasks or pastimes was simple when clothes were made bespoke. Gentlemen had hunting jackets, made in dozens of different permutations, with varying methods for storing both shooting accessories and game. Tweed jackets today are still often made with poacher’s pockets – big, deep pockets on the inside of the jacket that are large enough to store a rabbit without attracting attention. Hunting jackets in Tuscany – the traditional centre of such sport in Italy –
always have a wide pocket across the back of the jacket instead. Savile Row tailors were well practised at dealing with the whims and inventions of clients. The more adventurous ones were at the forefront of exploration and colonialism, with Africa in particular requiring drastic changes in wardrobe. The safari jacket was a descendant of hot-weather military gear, with all the lining and structure stripped out in order to make it as light as possible. The big, external pockets with their bellows design have since made it an iconic style. Even the common business suit has practical roots – in the hunting jackets worn by the English gentry in the 18th century. They were cut with a high fastening and long vent to allow the jacket to spread easily over the back of a horse. Over the years the jacket has been adapted, with a slightly lower button placement and two vents more common than one. But that close fit in the waist and flared skirt is the reason a man’s navy three-piece is so flattering. The design is consciously aped today at tailors which draw their house style directly from the riding jacket. On occasion clothes have had to be invented from scratch to suit new activities. Those taking up the new sport of motorcycling in the 1910s and 1920s had to find or create a garment that served a similar purpose to the riding jacket, but had different requirements. Both enabled easy access to the pockets by slanting them, although one was flapped and the other more commonly zipped. But the real difference in the design of the coats comes down to speed. Even with a waistcoat underneath, a wool riding coat was never going to be sufficient to protect the rider of a motorbike. Leather is more practical – rugged and wind-resistant – and so at first flying jackets, which had been designed to deal with the cold of open cockpits, were co-opted to do the job.
fa s h i o n l i f e BURBERRY PRORSAM, AUTUMN, WINTER COLLECTION 2014
The problem with flying jackets was that their high, stiff collars weren’t suited to motorbike helmets or the forward, hunched position of a rider. The first manufacturers of motorbike clothing, therefore, went for a collarless jacket and a double-breasted design to provide greater protection against the wind. That double breast would evolve into one of the most iconic aspects of the leather jacket: the asymmetric zip. Today any jacket with that simple detail, the diagonal running raffishly across the body, instantly conjures countercultural associations. Whether it’s Marlon Brando in The Wild One or Sid Vicious with his low-slung bass guitar, the zipped-up attitude of the biker connotes danger and rebellion. Other jackets owe their enduring popularity to practical materials rather than designs – in particular, waxed cotton. Heavily waxed cottons were used by many companies in the first half of the 20th century. And even though the International motorcycle jacket was Barbour’s most famous innovation, it too evolved over the years. The first model in 1936, the A1, was a one-piece suit. In 1940 it was adapted for British submariners and divided into a jacket and trousers. After the war, it became the jacket of choice for riders taking part in the International Six Days Trial motorcycle race, and was worn by Steve McQueen when competing for the US. There were versions in PVC, and along the way the addition of the “drunk” breast pocket, whose angled opening made access to maps and time trial cards easier.

BURBERRY PRORSAM, SPRING, SUMMER COLLECTION 2014
While Barbour has evolved consistently, other designs such as the trench coat, which was also made of a treated cotton and adapted for military use during the First World War, remained virtually unchanged. Burberry still makes versions with the original D-rings and shoulder flaps – used respectively for attaching equipment to the belt and epaulettes. Some icons are created, others evolve. What they all have in common is invention born of necessity. And it would be easy to assume that there are fewer such needs today. Certainly there have been no wars on the scale of the last century and new, broadly popular sports are rare. But innovation continues. Bespoke clothing has enjoyed a renaissance in the past 10 years, and gentlemen the world over are rediscovering the joys of tailoring their clothing to their particular needs. Gieves & Hawkes, another old Savile Row name, has become a dab hand at new designs such as bespoke leather jackets and pea coats. Henry Poole has been regularly remaking old designs for a modern audience, such as its driving suit for the Aston Martin designer Marek Reichman. It has dedicated pockets for spark plugs, spanners and a tyre-pressure gauge. Rapha, which now dominates the market for highend cycling gear, has many similarities to earlier innovators. It has made use of unusual materials (merino wool, hairsheep leather) and created original designs that are specific to the needs of the commuting cyclist. Rapha’s softshell jackets are not as revolutionary as the trench coat or as rebellious as the biker jacket. But they are the latest in a long and peculiarly British tradition of buttoned-up, buckled-down, practical male kit.

The Fashion World of
From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk Barbican Art Gallery, London until 25th August 2014 The first major exhibition devoted to Jean Paul Gaultier, the celebrated French couturier, opens at the Barbican in April 2014. This dynamic installation of more than 140 cutting-edge couture and ready-to-wear garments explores Gaultier’s fashion world, from his witty and boundarypushing designs to his ceaseless interest in society, identity and a beauty borne of difference.
T
he exhibition includes costumes for film and performance including iconic pieces such as the conical bra and corsets Madonna wore during her 1990 Blond Ambition World Tour, stage costumes designed for Kylie Minogue as well as pieces created for the films of Pedro Almodóvar and Luc Besson’s The Fifth Element. The exhibition also features a wealth of photography by collaborators such as Miles Aldridge, Richard Avedon, David LaChapelle, Pierre et Gilles, Herb Ritts, Cindy Sherman and Andy Warhol, as well as footage of catwalk presentations, concerts, music videos, films, dance performances and Gaultier’s cult television show, Eurotrash. Jean Paul Gaultier said: “I am super excited that the show is coming to London for two reasons. The first reason is that I always want to go to London, because London, for me, is a special place. In England I’ve got so many souvenirs and I’ve had so many experiences and I must say that the English were the first ones to come to my shows and appreciate my fashion. If there is one place other than Paris that I should like to live in, it is London. I’ve got so many connections with London and feel at home there, even sometimes more than Paris. I like the spirit, the humour and little adventures that were funny, like Eurotrash. The second thing is the Barbican. It’s an honour for me because it’s a wonderful gallery and a wonderful place with extraordinary architecture and I think that showing my work there will be beautiful.” Designed as an installation rather than a conventional fashion retrospective, this theatrically staged exhibition presents pieces created between the early 1970s and now, many of which are being shown in Britain for the first time. Keenly interested in all the world’s cultures and countercultures, Gaultier has conceived a new kind of fashion in both the way it is made and worn. Through twists, transformations, transgressions and reinterpretations, he not only erases the boundaries between cultures but also the sexes, redefining the idea of androgyny or playing with subverting hyper-sexualized fashion codes. The Film World of Jean Paul Gaultier To complement the exhibition, the

The season also includes films which have inspired and influenced Gaultier’s life and work, such as Elia Kazan’s A Streetcar Named Desire (1951), Jacques Becker’s Falbalas (1945), Robert Hamer’s Kind Hearts and Coronets (1949), Stephen Frears’ My Beautiful Laundrette (1985) and Federico Fellini’s La Strada (1954) and Satyricon (1969). The quirkiness that is
Vivienne Westwood
Influential and eccentric British fashion designer Vivienne Westwood is well known for her influence on punk fashion and dressing the Sex Pistols, as well as causing a stir with her political opinions and outspoken attitude. It’s no surprise that Dame Vivienne Westwood’s 72 years on earth have included some interesting moments. We’ve compiled 10 little-known facts about the queen of punk that may surprise you:
1 Vivienne studied fashion and silversmithing at the Harrow School of Art in London at the age of 17, but left after one term saying that a workingclass girl could never make a living in the art world. She went on to work in a factory and then as a teacher before eventually opening her own fashion boutique in Chelsea.
2 She was awarded an OBE in 1992 for her services to British fashion and attended the ceremony and collected her award from the Queen without wearing any knickers. This stunt was repeated in 2006 when she was awarded the title of “Dame” by the Prince of Wales. 3 In 2007, Westwood was awarded the gong for Outstanding Achievement in Fashion Design at the British Fashion Awards. Popping out for a “loo break” caused her to be late to collect her award. 4 Westwood’s controversial and artistic style seems to have rubbed off onto
her two sons have also gone on to have successful careers in art and fashion – her first son Benjamin Westwood is an erotic photographer and her second son, Joe Corre, is the founder of lingerie brand, Agent Provocateur
5 Vivienne Westwood is well-known for creating the wedding dress for the
character Carrie Bradshaw in the Sex and the City movie that spawned a thousand replicas. The dress in the movie was available to buy as a kneelength version on net-a-porter.com and sold out within hours. This was not her first foray into bridal wear, however: The very first wedding dress she designed was for her first marriage to Derek Westwood in 1962, well before the creation of her own fashion label.
6 Westwood partnered with Ethical Fashion Africa in 2011. She used local
woman to produce bags from recycled materials, paying them a fair wage for their skills and time. However her efforts were criticised by some for profiting from poverty.
7 Her design skills are not limited to fashion. Dame Westwood also produced a line of stationery and interior textiles in her iconic prints in 2010.
8 Vivienne Westwood has long been known for her political activism and
using her brand to draw attention to causes such as climate change, nuclear weapons and human rights. She writes a blog about these issues as well as fashion news at climaterevolution.co.uk.
9 Westwood does not watch television or read newspapers or magazines.
She is uninterested in pop culture and celebrities and admitted to not knowing who Emma Watson was when she presented her with the award of Elle Style Icon in 2001.
10 Vivienne lived in a council flat in Clapham for 30 years until 2000, when her husband (and former student), Andreas Kronthaler convinced her to move into her current home, which once belonged to the mother of Captain Cook. 7 8 j u ly 2 0 1 4

Make a splash with
Stylish Swimwear!
Shopping for swimwear is enough to bring a woman really out in a sweat. But there’s such a great range of styles, colours and flattering coverups available that everyone can look hot on the beach, no matter what their shape or size.
If you’re very slim If you have no waist and shoulders the same width as your hips, you can get away with pretty much anything bikini-wise, but make sure you go for one that makes you look feminine. Triangle bikinis look great on slim women, as do bikinis that fasten around the back of the neck (they flatter shoulders and rectangular shapes). Plus, tie bottoms look great on svelte legs. If you prefer a onepiece, go for one with geometric motifs to highlight your waist and give you shape. Choosing a simple style in an attention-grabbing colour is a good way to stand out from the crowd. If you’re full-figured And no waist, go for a one-piece swimsuit in a matte colour to highlight your décolleté. One-pieces camouflage little sins like tummies and flab. Balcony shapes are glam and sexy. If you go for a two-piece, avoid bikini shorts or high-cut bottoms which will weigh down your figure. If you’ve got a boyish, triangular shape If you have large shoulder and slim hips, balance out your figure and make it more feminine in high-waisted short bikinis that lengthen your legs (these are also great at hiding any hint of a tummy!). They widen your hips and make you look more in proportion. If you have a small chest Try push-up plunge bras to give you a bit of oomph. One-piece costumes suit you well, especially V-neck ones which widen your figure in the right places. Think Bond Girl! If you’re pear-shaped If you have big hips and slim shoulders, definately go for a bikini. Weigh out your bottom half with a balcony top that draws attention to your chest. Triangle tops tied behind the neck show off good shoulders, while low-waisted bottoms with little ties balance out your shape well. One-piece swimsuits highlight your waist, but they make your legs look shorter - or even heavier - than they really are. If you have well-proportioned curves If your shoulders and hips are the same width and you have a slim waist, you’re lucky enough to be able to wear pretty much any kind of swimwear. Take care with one-piece costumes, though. They have to fit perfectly: if they don’t hug your curves in the right places they flatten your shape and make you look heavier than you are. If you have little love handles, avoid tight strings that make you look like you’re squeezed into your bikini. Accessorise with simple jewellery and a pair of stylish sunglasses for a shortcut to A-List style! 8 0 j u ly 2 0 1 4

I think I’ve found a lump in my breast...
What Do I Do?
It is completely understandable that you might worry about the possibility of breast cancer if you find a lump, but remember; most lumps are not cancer. The most likely cause for a lump depends on your age. Women from 20s to 30s In women from 20 to 30 a definite lump is most likely to be a fibroadenoma. These are benign lumps that can sometimes be painful or enlarge but they are not cancerous and do not turn cancerous.
Women between 40s and 50s Between 40 and 50 breast cysts becom more common. These are also entirely benign. They are collections of fluid within the breast and although they can also be painful they are not dangerous.
Women aged 30 and onwards From the age of 30 onwards the gland tissue in the breast changes and it becomes more fibrous and nodular. The way the breast feels has been described as like a scaled down packet of frozen peas and occasionally, in just the same way that frozen peas can stick together to form a clump, so breast tissue can “stick together” to form definite nodular areas. These areas are also often tender but, once again, are not a sign of cancer. The rate of breast cancer begins to rise after the age of 40 and increases with age. Of course, breast cancer can occur at any age and I have seen cases in women as young as 19 and in their early 20s, but they are very, very rare. The important message is, if you notice a change in your breast please get it checked. Let’s go through what you need to do. The first thing to do is to see your GP and explain what you have noticed. They will examine you and in some cases may suggest a further check at a different time of your menstrual cycle. Some of the nodular areas can change with the cycle and this is actually a reassuring sign. If a discrete nodular area persists or your GP finds a definite lump, or is unsure, they will refer you to a breast clinic for a full assessment by the breast team. The team should consist of several consultants working together, and includes a surgeon a radiologist and a pathologist. The investigation of any breast problem revolves around, what is called, the triple assessment. It is like doing a jigsaw puzzle; pieces (of information) are collected and put together until the whole picture (the diagnosis) becomes clear. Indeed, this is often termed “the diagnostic jigsaw”. In some cases only 2 pieces may be needed, in others 4, but 3 (the triple assessment) is most common. Let’s have a look at what the pieces are. The first specialist you meet will often be the breast surgeon. They will ask questions about your symptoms (called taking your “history”). They will also ask about previous medical problems and your family history. They will then examine both breasts. How the breast feels when it is examined is the 8 8 j u ly 2 0 1 4
first part of the jigsaw. If there is a definite area of change then a fine needle aspiration may be carried out. This test uses a normal sized syringe and needle. The needle is placed into the area of the breast and “jiggled” so that a small amount of material is sucked into the syringe. This is sent away to be looked at under the microscope. More commonly now a test known as a core biopsy is done. A core biopsy takes a core of breast tissue about 1.5 cm long and 2 mm in diameter. The core biopsy is carried out by first putting some local anaesthetic into the skin of the breast. Once this has worked (it is quite quick) a small nick is made in the skin to allow the core biopsy needle, attached to the biopsy “gun”, to be placed into the breast. When the “gun” is “fired” (it is painless, but does make a noise rather like a large stapler) the needle takes the sample. This is often repeated a few times. The appearance of the cells that have been removed with a fine needle aspiration, or the result of the core biopsy, is the second part of the jigsaw. The final part of the triple assessment involves taking images of the breast. In ladies under 35 an ultrasound scan is the commonest way of doing this. In ladies over 35 they will have a mammogram as well. Full field digital mammograms are the most sensitive type available at the moment. What an area of the breast looks like on a mammogram or an ultrasound scan is the third piece of the jigsaw. If the triple assessment produces the same answer at each stage the result is said to be concordant and no further tests may be needed. For example, a lump in a 30 year old lady may feel like a fibroadenoma, look like one on an ultrasound scan and a core biopsy shows pieces of a fibroadenoma. An important part of the triple assessment that is not commonly mentioned is to watch how things change (or not) with time. It would not be unusual to check things a few months later, repeating some, or all, of the assessment to make sure nothing has changed. A thorough triple assessment may actually be a quadruple assessment! Once again it should be emphasised that in the majority of cases a triple assessment (or a quadruple one) will reveal that cancer is not present. Most symptoms are age related changes or benign lumps. However, it is important that any new change is thoroughly investigated by a specialist to make absolutely sure that all is well.

One-stOp dementia healthcare with Red & Yellow CaRe
A
revolutionary new dementia care service is now available in London and the South East. Red & Yellow Care is the UK’s only private healthcare provider fully dedicated to dementia. They provide personalised care of outstanding quality, putting the person with dementia and their family at the heart of everything. Dementia is a common condition affecting more than 800,000 people of all ages in the UK. It is estimated that by 2021 this number will have increased to around 1 million. Symptoms include memory loss, increased difficulty with thinking and planning, language difficulty, failure to recognise people or objects, a change in personality and depression. As the condition progresses, people typically develop multiple and complex health issues beyond the dementia symptoms. Red & Yellow Care believes that the way in which people with dementia are cared for could be greatly improved. The right clinical care can make a big difference, but few people with dementia receive the care they need; it can be difficult to access or is completely fragmented. Red & Yellow Care was set up by leading dementia specialists to overcome this fragmentation and uniquely provide integrated care across physical, mental and social health.

They provide both fast-track diagnostic assessments and a comprehensive postdiagnostic care service including: • Prompt consultations with world-class consultants, nurses and therapists who are all specialised in dementia • Bespoke healthcare packages led by a named dementia nurse who assesses, monitors and manages the individual’s health, supports the carer and family, and liaises with Red & Yellow Care’s multiprofessional team, the GP and other care providers • Treatment, care and support wherever needed - at home, care home, hospital or in their consulting rooms in London • Total peace of mind and continuity of care - Red & Yellow Care stay with the patient every step of the way
Red & Yellow Care developed this ground breaking approach to improve overall health and wellbeing, facilitate independent living, and enable people with dementia and their family to live life to the full. “There are many systemic barriers in the delivery of healthcare, notably between physical and mental health,” said Dr Bahbak Miremadi, Founding Director, Red & Yellow Care. “We have ignored the status quo and designed the ideal scenario; a care service that revolves around the individual. In other words, care without barriers.” To find out more about Red & Yellow Care or read their inspirational report ‘A Good Life with Dementia’, visit www.redandyellowcare.com or call 0203 7000 163.

Quinn Clinics’ Guide to Shopping for
Laser Hair Removal Laser hair removal is now one of the most popular non-invasive treatments in the UK, with more and more people discovering the benefits of permanent hair reduction. The increase in demand has inevitably led to a wider range of suppliers in the market with some offering very attractive prices, yet all laser hair removal is not the same.
S
kin expert Dr John Quinn, founder of professional skin treatment business Quinn Clinics is warning patients to choose their hair removal system and provider with care and to help them make the right choice, has created a comprehensive Guide to Shopping for Laser Hair Removal in order to explain the options so that patients can make safe and informed decisions. Dr John Quinn, founder and medical director of Quinn Clinics explains: “The appeal of laser hair removal is now quite widely understood – permanent hair reduction means that people have smoother, healthier skin without the need to shave daily.” “However, there is a plethora of laser hair removal systems available. These have differing features which can affect results depending on the individual’s own colouring and requirements as well as the skill of the laser therapist. It is really important for patients to make the right choice.” The bewildering array of technology is certainly one of the more confusing areas for those considering laser hair removal. Quinn Clinics’ Guide to Shopping for Laser Hair Removal breaks this down into a simple explanation of the two main systems – laser and IPL (intense pulsed light) – explaining how they actually work in non-technical language. The Guide also includes a very helpful 10-point comparison of the advantages of laser vs IPL. Dr John Quinn continues: “Safety should be a big concern for anybody choosing laser hair removal. Some systems are simply less likely to cause problems than others. Understanding this is important in a market where people are increasingly tempted to shop around on price alone.” “In addition, there is no legal requirement for practitioners or clinics/salons to be trained or registered in any way, but we help patients understand exactly what to look for in choosing a laser hair removal provider.”
9 2 j u ly 2 0 1 4
“By explaining the choices and giving patients advice about their options, we hope that people are able to use the information to understand their options and make the right decision for them.” Quinn Clinics is an independent, doctor-led company based in Greenwich/ Blackheath. The clinic offers laser hair removal with highly trained therapists and a choice of technologies. The latest addition is the new Candela elōs Plus with Motif - a pain-free laser hair removal system – as well as the Lumenis, which works on a very broad spectrum of hair type and skin colour combinations. Although many competitors charge for a consultation, Quinn Clinics offer a free appointment with a skin test to enable patients to assess the treatment without any cost or obligation. Quinn Clinics also offers an extensive range of cosmetic and medical skin treatments including popular anti-wrinkle injections, dermal fillers and lip filler treatments. The clinic is equipped with the latest advanced skin treatment technology, including IPL, laser, CO2 and radio frequency. They also tackle medical skin issues including acne, rosacea, thread veins and excessive sweating. The company enjoys an excellent reputation for customer service and has won a number of awards to reflect this as well as being fully registered with the CQC. JOHN BLY ANTIQUES
Ol’ Rockin’ Chair’s Got Me...
O
r rather a new one has. This is the star item in the Edward Barnsley Workshop Stand at the recent Masterpiece show in Chelsea. Now well established as a must-see part of the London Summer Season, Masterpiece enjoys an enviable reputation for its display of luxurious and collectable treasures from antiquity to contemporary. And there’s not much more luxurious than sitting in Edward Barnsley’s chair. I was honoured by having it lifted off its dais and placed in the main isle where I took my seat and gently rocked away. I did not want to get up, but crowds started to gather as I snoozed away, assuming I was part of the exhibit. The antiques section that is. The Barnsley chair is made of scorched oak and as an object of beauty it is a succession of curves without a single straight line; pure aesthetics. It was designed without computer programming, in the traditional way, and so it seems to fit any size to absolute perfection. Of course the very essence of any rocking chair is that it is comfortable
9 6 j u ly 2 0 1 4
and most are, but the balance created by the precise position and angle of the seat and legs to the rockers can make the difference between going to sleep or not. It is often said the rocking chair was invented by Benjamin Franklin, but while it was certainly a North American innovation, rocking chairs were born well before he grew out of short trousers. The first to arrive in England came around 1725 since when they have been made in every conceivable material and pattern, and in most European countries. Of these the Viennese Thonet bentwood version is among the best known but compared to Edward Barnsley’s even this can be quite hard work to get rocking. Thinking again of Edward’s consistent contemporary take on traditional objects I wonder if this is the first time we’ve seen a Mod and a Rocker in perfect harmony.….not something we would have thought possible in the 1960’s. LIGHT
THE DNA Once upon a time the only lighting we had was the flicker of a flame and the sun in the sky. But since we have now conquered that strange thing called electricity we can have all sorts of exciting lighting features like this the LED Spiral Helix. Reminiscent of the DNA helix but without any nucleotides, this incredible twirling lighting feature gently turns two tendrils covered with red and blue LED lights around and around. Hidden deep inside is a small motor which powers the tendrils to turn every 45 seconds keeping the motion continuously flowing. The rhythmic waves of red and blue lights create soothing patterns across your room as the helix continues spinning using its own kinetic energy. Hang this from the ceiling or alternatively use the stand (sold separately) for a freestanding floor light with a difference! Product Features Reminiscent of dancing DNA 2 threads of coloured LED’s Motor pushes tendrils every 45 seconds Optional stand for free standing option (sold separately) Creates soothing light patterns Perfect for the designer home or office, this original lighting solution will illuminate and transform your space. Spiralling silently to its own rhythm, the Helix lamp is unique in its field. The Led Spiral Helix costs only £98.85 from www.red5.co.uk/led-helix.aspx 9 8 j u ly 2 0 1 4

Do you love proper furniture? (So do we, that’s why we’ve been importing it for over 50 years.)
Our Origins
people only dream of.
Wharfside Furniture was founded by Nathaniel Stewart in 1962. Originally a carpenter in the bustling furniture centre of Shoreditch, London, Nathaniel was one of the first to import dining furniture from Denmark.
We also have an M25 showroom, located in Leatherhead, Surrey. This shop, with its high street store-front and its friendly, experienced staff, is the ideal place to experience Wharfside Furniture. Our future
The Scandinavian aesthetic appealed to the UK market, as did the superb quality, and Wharfside became known as the direct source for Danish furniture. Today we have happy customers who first bought their dining suite as newly marrieds in the 1960’s. Who we are today Nathaniel’s son Jonathan took over the business in the 1980’s. Jonathan raised Wharfside to a new level of luxury. We now specialise in bespoke furniture; wall units, kitchens, dining, lounge and bedroom furniture designed and made to order. Since our factories are small and specialist, and our staff have years of experience, we are able to provide a level of service which is unparalleled. Jonathan introduced the award-winning Austrian company, Team7 to the UK. Team7 are known worldwide for their luxurious designs, the finest European hardwoods and an uncompromising commitment to the environment. Today, our warehouse is still located in Shoreditch, which is now the capital’s coolest district. With exposed brickwork, steel girders, and a glass roof, the large showroom is an icon in its own right. It also happens to be a treasure trove for lovers of luxury furniture. Take the time to explore and you will discover furniture most 1 ju l y22001144 7 0 0J U LY
Team7 solid wood bespoke kitchens have never before been seen in the UK. The solid European hardwood, finished only with pure natural oils, creates a healthy environment ideally suited for the kitchen. The designs are contemporary, the finish is superior and the options are extensive. We now sell worldwide. Our online presence means that we take orders from all over the world every day. We also have many happy customers who will use us to furnish their properties abroad as well as at home. Our third generation, Alex Stewart (http://www.alexnstewart.com) is a sculptor who has created an artists’ studio within the Shoreditch warehouse. Feel free to request a tour when you come to visit the showroom. So, what is proper furniture? By ‘proper’ we mean well-made, well-designed, and well... beautiful. We are passionate about wonderful furniture, and we believe that you could be too. Inspired? Come visit us in Shoreditch or Leatherhead or online at www.wharfside.co.uk. You won’t regret it.

Making an impression
“You never get a second chance to make a good first impression” ... so the saYing goes. from the grandest of countrY estates to the humblest of homesteads the same holds true
A
mong the first things a guest sees on a visit is the house name or number sign. A Lead sign from Redfields exudes true class, an understated style that would become both castle and cottage. Lead has a beautiful, blue-grey patina that mellows with the passing seasons, a natural hue that blends well with all colours of brick, stone and stucco. Lettering can be accentuated in complimentary colours and either burnished or antiqued at your request. Redfields signs are made to last, when wood rots, cast iron rusts and slate laminates, lead remains. Lead is renowned for its incredible durability, indeed some Roman lead plumbing is still in service to this very day. Lead’s malleability allows it to be easily bent to follow the curve of a wall or tree. Redfields signs are available in a variety of 12022 J jUuLlYy 22 00 11 44
shapes and sizes and they will happily quote for bespoke designs. Signs can be made double sided for hanging and they can supply beautiful English wrought iron brackets and posts to suit. Redfields signs are individually hand crafted from the purest refined lead at their Hampshire foundry. The signs are made from old wooden patterns in the traditional way. Letters and numbers are laterally inverted
(mirror image) and aligned by eye before the sign is moulded in sand. Redfields is a small company of craftsmen specialising in the design, manufacture and restoration of decorative leadwork. They catalogue a wide range of fantastic garden ornaments including statues, fountains, planters, cisterns and sundials. Redfields specialises in bespoke planters and window boxes, it is their greatest pleasure working with their customers from thumbnail sketch through to the installation of a unique garden feature. Paul Henson at Redfields says “there is nothing more satisfying than installing a beautiful statue and leaving it to patinate and mellow into its new home for generations”... Simple and elegant...
shutters are the perfect focal point for any room
I
t may be the simplicity of shutters that makes them so effortlessly stunning – it’s almost certainly what makes them fit beautifully with so many design schemes. Whatever trend or look you’re going for in your home, you’re sure to find a shutter in a style and colour to complement your room perfectly – whether you’re looking for natural wood or a clean and contemporary painted finish. But it’s not all about looks, shutters are incredibly practical too. As you’d expect, they provide excellent control over light and privacy, but there’s more to them than you might think. They also give fantastic insulation to windows – perfect for draughty homes – they’re easy to keep clean and they’re extremely hardwearing, so it’s not just their classic style that will stand the test of time. Spoilt for choice If you’re sold on shutters but you’re not sure whether they’re within your budget, think again. There are so many ranges, from hardwood through to LDF, which make shutters an achievable option for most. What’s more, there are a variety of shutter styles and finishes to choose from – you can even get bespoke shutters for shaped

CHELSEA FABRICS Chelsea Fabrics was established twenty years ago as producers and wholesale suppliers of Curtain and Upholstery fabrics.
A
t that time the most popular fabrics were printed designs and the Company sold its own exclusive designs not only to numerous shops and stores in the UK but exported to markets as diverse as Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, the UAE and Scandinavia amongst many others.
About three years later, the company set up a showroom in Fulham, West London, which included a retail department named The Curtain Fabric Factory, to sell its discontinued designs direct to the public at greatly discounted prices. Over the next decade, demand for prints diminished and plains and textures almost entirely took over the market. Such was the demand for discounted fabrics in the retail shop, that more emphasis was placed in that area and the offer was greatly expanded. Making excellent use of the contacts that the company had established overseas enabled a huge selection of fabrics to be sourced from the best Mills Worldwide, cutting out the middle man and offered at very keen prices. Other products and services were gradually introduced, including curtain tracks and poles of every description, including electric, remote controlled systems, Roman, Roller, Venetian and Vertical blinds, again including motorised systems, all fitted by the Companies expert fitters. Also a recently introduced upholstery service to compliment the huge range of upholstery fabrics on offer, all discounted of course. Over the years, the ranges of fabrics have been increased expedentialy, to 1 0 8 j u ly 2 0 1 4
the extent that the choice of colours, styles, qualities and effects, is probably the largest in West London. There are dozens of different types of plains and semi plains, ranging from pure silks to velvets, traditional florals to the latest themes in abstracts, jacquards, embroideries, satins, designs with horses, designs with maps, butterflies, flowers of every description, trees, animal skins, the list is virtually endless. And for clients who cant find their perfect choice in stock, there are thousands of samples from the Worlds leading Mills to browse through. The only criticism and one often repeated, is that the choice is too large ! But to help with this expert staff are on hand to advise with a no pressure, one to one service. It is no accident that a large percentage of customers are repeat ones or have been personally recommended. The stores somewhat unlikely location is in the middle of North End Road, Fulham at the junction with Lillie Road, just along from the famous fruit and vegetable market and within a short walk from West Kensington, Fulham Broadway and West Brompton Road tube stations or easy pay & display parking around he corner. The narrow entrance belies the 5,000 square feet of space crammed full of stock to which it opens up. If there was such a thing as a “Fabric Tardis” this is certainly it, and well worth a visit. L
ago is open to getting to know and exchanging ideas, so his path, is marked by the continuous interplay of influences from inside the company outwards and vice-versa. Participation and sharing are the keywords: a single-celled organism that becomes multicellular, feeding itself on many different individual personalities, enhancing them. LAGO’s inspiring vision can be summarised in a short but disruptive expression: Interior Life. As a matter of fact, if a person spends most of their time in settings of a higher quality, their quality of life will also be better. The kitchen is the place of participation and sharing for excellence: this is the reason why many of the new products presented at the 2014 Salone del Mobile, are part of the kitchen. The principles of modularity and customisation, still today the lynchpin of LAGO design, have their roots in 36e8, a piece 36.8 x 36.8 cm per side that, has revolutionized traditional industry metrics, giving the user infinite modularity and the chance to become the designer of their own space. To celebrate 10 years of 36e8, Lago presents 36e8 Kitchen - New Evolution, that include new Wildwood panels that pair old oak with

a 6mm aluminium profile for protection and support. The new steel countertop integrates the washbasin and the hob, while the vertical elements, dishwasher and oven are suspended. The tables “Lotus” and “Air”, are designed to accommodate the “last minute” guests. Air and Air Wildwood tables, so, are proposed in a new extendable version, for adding between 2 and 4 extra seats, with a groove that makes it easier to open the two table ends, which hides two drawers. “Loto Table”, instead, is unfolds like a flower, passing from seating for 4 to seating for 8! Four triangular extensions, painted in LAGO colours, hide beneath the Wildwood or painted tabletop. Finally, “Monolito”. A single piece of quartz for holding the hob and washbasin. It can be the same colour as the countertop or its interior can create a two-tone effect, picking up LAGO colours to create a dialogue with the kitchen panels.
