Dolce & Gabbana to design

Claridge’s Christmas Tree 2014 Dolce & Gabbana and Claridge’s, London’s iconic Mayfair hotel, have announced that they will celebrate Christmas together for the second time this year.

C

laridge’s legendary annual Christmas tree will be created by designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, long-time friends and guests of the hotel. The unveiling takes place on 19th November 2014. This year’s tree will be surrounded by a magical enchanted forest, and decorated with many woodland animals such as: foxes, deer and squirrels that gather near the fire. Adorning the tree will be hundreds of hand painted blown glass spheres that illustrate the cities’ most famous landmarks, symbolising the many Christmas traditions from all over the world. Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana are dedicating this tree to all the children of the world. By doing so they recall the many happy Christmases cherished from their own childhoods. The Claridge’s Christmas Tree has long been a festive landmark, drawing visitors and Londoners alike to marvel at its magnificent design. This is the fifth year that Claridge’s have invited a favourite guest to create and decorate the Christmas tree in their own inimitable style. Thomas Kochs, Claridge’s General Manager said “We are delighted to invite Domenico and Stefano to spread their special magic in our lobby once again. Our guests and staff loved their tree so much last year that we just know they will create something equally memorable and enchanting this time. Both Claridge’s and Dolce & Gabbana are synonymous with timeless glamour, innovative spirit and traditional family values that are so important during Christmas”

Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana said “Christmas is the happiest time of the year for children and we want to celebrate it with a tree that brings together all the different cultures from around the world. We thought of an enchanted forest where the real meets the unreal, just as it does the night before Christmas. It is a very special tradition because it helps spread our love for Italian craftsmanship around the world. It is our second year creating the tree at Claridge’s, a symbol of London that holds a special place in our hearts”

The greatest enchanted stories ever told at Selfridges this Christmas

T

he compelling storytelling qualities of arguably the greatest story ever told - Christmas - and the desire to escape into fantasy and enchantment at Christmas time, brings you Selfridges’ new festive season theme: Storytelling.

To celebrate, Selfridges has nominated what it considers to be the 25 most enchanted stories ever told, stretching across different eras as well as themes - they are not all about Christmas, but they all have enchantment in their tale and have been selected to be at least one generation old - so no Harry Potter in sight. The oldest story featuring within the top 25 is over 300 years old (Sleeping Beauty by the pioneer of the modern fairy tale genre, Charles Perrault) and the most recent to make the cut is Raymond Briggs’ The Snowman first published in 1978.

storytelling celebration’s most visible and most spectacular showcase. Several of the world’s best-loved tales including Cinderella, Snow White and Hansel and Gretel are told - all with a cheeky and contemporary twist. This won’t be the London store’s only masterful display visible from the street… A dazzling centrepiece installation will vie for attention atop the historic neo-classical Oxford Street canopy. Expressing storytelling in a 3D exhibit, it is made of a mix of polystyrene and aluminium and decorated with 1,000 metres of neon lights and over 10,000 LED lights. Called Destination Christmas, the canopy features universal fairy tale symbolisms with a little Selfridges twist, such as the Golden Goose wearing a monocle and a top hat. The installation is the biggest neon sign to be seen in London this Christmas.

Outside the top 25 most enchanted stories but within the wider context of the celebration of storytelling, Selfridges is also embracing a broader mix powerful, legendary, famous and compelling stories - including the great stories told through film. During the festive season, the Everyman cinema at Selfridges, the world’s first department store cinema, will show a series of enchanted tale-based films including Pinocchio and It’s A Wonderful Life.

Storytelling will continue within the store at every turn... The Selfridges Christmas story - entirely composed in rhyme - is a clever mash-up of a number of well-known stories which transform into a brand new tale, and is available to read in full and to listen to at Selfridges.com where pop-up online radio station extraordinaire, The Butcher’s Apron, has been invited to host regular storytelling slots, bringing some amazing tales to life.

Christmas at Kew As twilight falls...the magic begins...

C

hristmas at Kew is back! After last year’s hugely popular experience, Kew Gardens is offering a brand new, glittering trail a mile long, guided by snowflakes, which winds its way through the breathtaking landscape, creating a magical after dark experience.

This will be enhanced by a series of botanically inspired, large scale light installations, created by French design studio TILT. Their work has been seen at Bestival, and the renowned Festival of Lights in Lyon. The 27 individual pieces – the largest of which will be 12 metres by 12 metres – will look like fireworks frozen in time, including luminous lily of the valleys and imposing thistles. Wander between glowing waterside reflections, illuminated fountains and glorious glasshouses, as Kew’s stunning architecture and towering tree canopies are brought to life, drenched in Christmas colour. A shimmering tunnel of lights, twinkling holly bushes, Christmas trees festooned with lit up presents, and plumes of fire dancing to music inspired by The Nutcracker in-front of the iconic Palm House, make this one of the most Christmassy affairs in town. Not to mention romantic – visitors can steal kisses at ‘mistletoe moments’ – a secluded spot bathed in fairy lights and bedecked in mistletoe.

Keep warm under the stars with mulled wine, spiced cider, hot chocolate, toasted marshmallows, and other sumptuous traditional fayre. Kew’s tastefully curated shops at Victoria Plaza and White Peaks are the perfect place to pick up unique gifts for the whole family. There’s lots of fun to be had for the whole family both day and night. Father Christmas will be waiting for the children in his Snowflake Grotto, and a Victorian Carousel, family rides, and an outdoor adventure playground can be found by White Peaks Cafe. For Christmas at Kew visitors, a specially reduced entry price for an adult day visit to Kew Gardens (under 17’s go free during the day) can be purchased in addition to your trail ticket. Adam Farrar, Kew’s Head of Venue Hire and Events says: “After the success of last year’s Christmas trail, we have produced an after dark sensation that is even more beautiful, designed to really get you in the Christmas spirit. If you missed out on this much heralded night-time experience first time round, or if you loved what you saw and are curious about the new trail and the spectacular TILT light installations, wrap up warm, and head down to Kew Gardens, where you will see the landscape as never before.” For more information and to book tickets, visit www.kew.org/christmas or telephone 0844 995 9675.

The run, delivered in partnership with Cancer Research UK by Human Race - the UK’s largest organiser of running, cycling, triathlon and swimming events - will see runners gather at ‘Base Camp’, which will be set up by the River Thames on London’s Embankment. From there they will set off along a stunning looped course featuring views of the London Eye, St Paul’s Cathedral, Big Ben, the Tower of London and many more of London’s iconic sites. Areas of snow, being dubbed Snow-Zones, are anticipated to feature on the winter themed route, but runners won’t let that stop them making it to the finish as they conquer the cold in aid of Cancer Research UK. Clive Sanders, Head of Events at Cancer Research UK, said; “We’re delighted to be launching this exhilarating running event for London and we hope thousands of participants will unite to help beat cancer sooner. By taking part in the Winter Run men and women of all ages can give cancer the cold shoulder and demonstrate that the fight to keep more families together for longer is year-round.” The timing of the Cancer Research UK London Winter Run makes it

ideal to put those New Year’s resolutions into practice. For anyone aiming to get fit and healthy in 2015, the London Winter Run provides all the inspiration needed to dig out their trainers and see the city in the best possible way by foot, on safe closed roads with thousands of cheering supporters. It also gives runners hoping to maintain their fitness throughout the winter something fun to aim for and is an ideal distance to conquer as part of a spring marathon training plan. Nick Rusling, CEO of Human Race, said “The London Winter Run is part of our vision to get thousands of runners to take on the challenge or running in stunning central London in the heart of winter. To achieve this vision we will work with our partners Cancer Research UK and London in order to inspire people to keep active all around the year. We’ve organised many events in the winter before and they have a wonderful added sense of camaraderie and collective spirit which should make this event magical.” Get your friends together and show that you’re not the type to be put off by a little bit of winter weather! Tower Bridge Unveils World First!

The opening of a new glass floor across its highlevel walkways

T

ower Bridge Exhibition, one of London’s most iconic attractions, has unveiled a world first for its visitors with the opening of new glass floor across its high-level Walkways, 42 metres above the Thames. The West Walkway has being unveiled with the re-opening of the East Walkway set for 1st December. Measuring 11 metres long and 1.8 metres wide, the new glass floor will significantly enhance the attraction experience, allowing visitors to enjoy a unique viewpoint of the world-famous bridge lifts. Provided by the City of London Corporation and developed under the auspices of its Culture, Heritage and Libraries Committee, plans for Tower Bridge Exhibition’s new £1million glass floor has been underway for two years. With circa 600,000 visitors per year, the attraction now expects this exciting new feature to significantly increase visitor numbers. The flooring across each Walkway comprises of six panels, each weighing 530 kilograms, supported by a carbon steel framework weighing approximately 1,000 kilograms. The Walkways original steel lattice structure has been preserved under the glass. The installation took a 20-strong team to construct over a six-week period. In conjunction with the new look Walkways, Tower Bridge Exhibition has also launched its first ever state of the art Augmented Reality App for smart devices – the Raise Tower Bridge App. The FREE App takes visitors through an augmented reality window in the glass, allowing a full 360-degree panoramic video of the Bridge being raised. As the video begins to play, visitors will be able to find different angles to look through whilst moving around and experience the incredible drop to the water below. Free to download, the App is available from the attraction’s website, iTunes as well as Google Play Stores. Visitors without a smart device, can

make use of the assisted iPads available in the Walkways. Tower Bridge Exhibition tells the history of the Bridge through animations and displays, across its towers, high-level panoramic Walkways and the atmospheric Victorian Engine Rooms. With breathtaking vistas of the Capital, the experience of visiting the high-level Walkways will now be bolstered with the addition of three interactive touch screens showcasing how the Bridge raises in its modern context. Whilst the popular Great Bridges of the World exhibition has been refreshed, now featuring 40 of the world’s most revered bridges, each of which represents a breathtaking feat of engineering. Continuing with the experience, the atmospheric setting of the Victorian Engine Rooms, houses the beautifully maintained steam engines that were once used to power the bridge lifts. Christopher Earlie, Business and Marketing Manager said: “The opening of Tower Bridge marked the dawn of a legendary feat of engineering creating what is considered by many as the most famous bridge in the world. Today, 120 years on, we are extremely proud to unveil the new glass floor on the high-level Walkways – another astonishing engineering accomplishment. For the first time ever, visitors to the Exhibition will be able to experience a never seen before viewpoint of London – the Thames, road and pedestrian life, all moving at pace 42 metres below. Those who plan the time of their visit carefully, will be able to witness – from above the magic of the Bridge raising for a river vessel!” 2014 marks Tower Bridge’s 120th birthday, following its opening 30th June 1894 by the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII). www.towerbridge.org.uk

helsea is home to some of the most interesting places in London. The ever-hip King’s Road has something to offer for all generations. Our slightly older readers may well remember the area started “Swinging London” in the mid-60s, and saw the birth of punk in the 70s. The doyenne of punk fashion, Vivienne Westwood, still runs her first ever store at the so called ‘World’s End’ end of the King’s Road. Mary Quant caused a sensation when she opened Bazaar on the King’s Road in 1955. She broke the fashion mould when she launched the mini skirt in the early 1960s. Her boutique can now be found in Duke of York Square. Chelsea is adorned with fine historic buildings, rows of beautiful townhouses owned by footballers and property tycoons, exclusive and elegant boutiques, as well as well-known brand stores. Upmarket Peter Jones is situated in Sloane Square. Chelsea offers some of the most prestigious names in luxury shopping, most of which can be discovered on Sloane Street…London’s premiere shopping avenue for the world’s most revered luxury brands. From designer handbags, couture fashion and accessories Sloane Street offers an intimate shopping atmosphere in boutiques committed to world class service. With the world’s most sought after fashion brands lined up door to door, strolling between stores is a convenient and swift endeavour.

You will be spoilt for choice with home furnishings in Chelsea - especially on the stylish Fulham Road, and within the iconic Design Centre Chelsea Harbour. There you will discover a wealth of prestigious showrooms and brands to suit all expensive tastes! If you need to take some time out from your tiresome shopping, there are many places to take a break... quirky cinemas, stylish pubs, upmarket restaurants and brasseries. And for those that are looking for extreme exclusivity there are a number of private clubs here, although membership is required. Chelsea still has a finger on the pulse when it comes to designer stores, with the added bonus of having a more laid-back feel than rival areas. Chelsea is still full of famous faces... as for people spotting, people do seem to be more beautiful here, and the rich and famous almost go unnoticed. Chelsea is indeed one of the most upmarket and most varied places to shop and eat in London, with a reputation for being one of London’s most fashionable shopping streets.

CONJURING UP A UNIQUE CHELSEA CHRISTMAS

04.12.14 DOVEHOUSE GREEN-KING’S ROAD-FULHAM ROAD

If there is one magical date you should mark in your festive diary, whether using an app or by quill-scrolling it into a Dickensian leather-bound book, it is the 4th December. The magic starts at 5pm and lasts until 9pm. For one night only, you can head to the western end of the King’s Road and into Fulham, where Sloane Stanley will conjure for you an evening of entertainment and unique delights along your path. For the second year running, Dovehouse Green will play host to a 7ft designer Christmas tree, a beautiful blend of technology and Tinkerbell wonderment as it sparkles against the inky, star-strewn London sky. This year there will be more spectacular lights to enhance the beauty of the tree. During the evening you will be mesmerised by human ice sculptures, stilt walkers will tower above you as they stride the London pavements and carol singers will bring the sense of traditional Christmas to you in song. Chelsea, always known for its individualism and sense of fun, will come alive with all manner of circus-inspired merriment and mischief.

However, Sloane Stanley do not simply wish to dazzle you with magical entertainment – it is also an event to help with the exhausting running around trying to get it all done element of the festivities. What better way than to offer a free horse-drawn Victorian style omnibus to take you from convenient stop to enticing shop on a trail for that elusive gift. You will then be greeted with a drink, some nibbles and a chance to peruse a plethora of potential presents. A beautiful scarf to hug away the winter blues? A piece of statement home décor? A booklet given to you on the night or downloaded from the Magic of Christmas website will be packed with tempting offers, so that it will be more fun to choose. Why not be taken gently from place to place, snuggled up with your loved ones while relaxing to the rhythmic sound of horses’ hooves. The omnibus is sublimely unique and the best form of transport for a twinkly London night. Don’t sell yourself short by racing from shop to shop with smoke on your heels like everyone else.

Chelsea’s

most exclusive department store

Peter Jones is not just for Christmas, or even the summer sales; it’s for life.

T

he famous Chelsea department store, owned by the John Lewis Partnership celebrating 150 years this year, is the shop to which many smart Londoners come, as if by instinct, to dress baby, make wedding lists, furnish homes and totally indulge.

The remarkable thing about Peter Jones is that it has successfully fused modern design with middle-class aspirations and upper-crust values over many decades. The original Peter Jones shop, established by a Welsh draper in the 1870s, was taken over by John Lewis in 1905. In the design of Peter Jones, it broke away confidently from the grandiloquent architecture of early London department stores - Harrods and Selfridges among them. Its success lies in its ability to be modern yet old-fashioned: entrepreneurial and well-mannered at one and the same time. Peter Jones, situated in Sloane Square, offers seven floors of the best in fashion, home and technology. Take a look at Peter Jones’ fashion floors. If you can’t choose from all of the fabulous famous fashion brands, including Ralph Lauren, Barbour, Levi, Nicole Farhi, DKNY, Calvin Klein, Wonderbra, Lejaby, Mulberry, Aquascutum and Ugg, ask the Fashion Advisor for a free consultation to help you achieve the look you want. Complete your look with stunning shoes, jewellery and handbags.

Keeping with tradition, the famous Sloane Square shop is still endlessly devoted to its more loyal customers and still has an extended china and soft furnishings section, together with the customary haberdashery and hats. They are now also attracting a more youthful clientele. A dazzling accessories section and some trendy cosmetic brands like Fresh, Molton Brown and Benefit are complemented by concessions dedicated to familiar fashion names like Warehouse, Coast and Hobbs. You can enjoy expert pampering in the relaxing beauty rooms and shop for all your favourite cosmetics and perfumes in the stunning beauty department. You’ll find exclusively designed souvenirs in the gift shop and stunning homewares as well as the latest technology. Don’t forget to visit the Top Floor restaurant, with its spectacular views over London. Although a longstanding London department store, Peter Jones manages to keep up with today’s fashions and tastes, altogether a very exclusive, chic appeal which is only fitting for the modish Kings Road surroundings. Project Kahn is the luxury Range Rover brand, producing bespoke vehicles using the highest quality materials, from carbon fibre components, to the finest leather upholstery, tailored to the precise specification of the customer and designed to maximise comfort and quality.

The personality behind the brand is founder and creative director Afzal Kahn, a hands on leader, personally involved in each product release and imparting his passion for every aspect of automotive design into each new project.

The Chelsea Truck Company, launched alongside the company’s move to London, is dedicated to “styling and refining the best off road activity vehicles in the world” - the Jeep Wrangler and Land Rover Defender - reimagining these off road icons as stylish and sophisticated city explorers.

utomotive fashion house Kahn Design opened its Chelsea location in 2012, and over the last two years has established itself well in the area. The company is understandably discreet about their clientele, but they are known to supply vehicles to some of the best known faces in business, sport, music and film, and the distinctive Kahn badge can be spotted at many a society event.

With over twenty-five years of experience in the industry, Kahn Design’s creative team of product designers, 3D modellers, graphic artists and material engineers spend thousands of hours developing and refining each vehicle to exacting standards of craftsmanship. Every alteration to the original is a carefully considered decision - not surprising when you consider the iconic status of the Land Rover, Range Rover and Jeep vehicles the company works with. Committed to investing in British industry and innovation, each of their bespoke creations is designed, tested and converted in the U.K. The boutique showroom displays an ever-changing line-up of beautifully finished vehicles from its two automotive brands, Project Kahn, and the aptly named Chelsea Truck Company.

THE ENDURING APPEAL OF

P

ART DECO

ullman Editions designs, commissions and publishes striking original posters which capture the enduring appeal of Art Deco. Their newly-commissioned posters feature glamorous travel destinations around the world, winter sports in the French and Swiss Alps, and the world’s greatest historic automobiles on the road and track.

The last decade or so has seen enormous growth in the vintage poster market, with prices growing steadily as demand increases for a product with only a finite supply. In the field of vintage Winter Sports posters for example, good posters from the 1920s and 1930s comfortably achieve five-figure sums at auction, with the finest posters reaching as much as £30,000 on the rare occasions they become available, excluding them to all but the wealthiest collectors. Posters – once described as ‘a visual shout’ – proved an attractive, effective means of promotion and ‘at-a-glance’ display. Poster display was never more inspired than in the Art 6 4 N OV E M B E R 2 0 1 4

Deco period when posters, largely produced by Swiss and French railway companies, graced station platforms and billboards to persuade affluent and adventurous travellers to enjoy the newly-fashionable modern luxury travel. The vast majority of these classic posters were destroyed when replaced by other posters - it is the handful of surviving vintage posters that today fetch such dramatic prices. Pullman Editions’ modern take on these Art Deco classics provide a more affordable way to decorate your home. Evoking memories of holidays and special occasions, their posters also make super original gifts. Having recognised the demand for stylish, decorative yet affordable posters, Pullman Editions is committed to designing and publishing new artworks to provide a modern alternative to the costly original Art Deco posters produced ‘in-period’. Executed by leading poster artists, each with their own unique ‘signature style’, their editions combine originality with the quintessential heritage and dramatic imagery of vintage posters.

Available in strictly limited editions of 280, the posters are printed using traditional techniques on the finest quality 100% cotton fine art paper. They are signed, hand-numbered and bear Pullman Editions’ embossed stamp of authenticity. Each poster is approximately 97 x 65 cms (38 x 26 inches), and they are supplied unframed in robust tubes, which can be shipped worldwide. A framing service is also offered for personal shoppers at the London gallery. Priced at £395 each including VAT (unframed), the limited-edition posters may be ordered online at www.pullmaneditions.com, or collected in person at the London gallery near Sloane Square in Chelsea, open 10am until 6pm Tuesday to Friday and between 11am and 5pm on Saturdays.

KINGS ROAD ON SALE FOR £3.5 MILLION THROUGH CHESTERTONS

THE BOLTONS, CHELSEA ON SALE FOR £39.5 MILLION

London property boom Chelsea becomes the most popular spot for the super-rich

M

ore than 34 houses worth in excess of £1 million are sold every day according to new figures released by the Land Registry. The House Price Index showed that in April 2014, 1,028 houses sold for seven figures, with 214 reaching in excess of £2 million.

Chelsea has become the most desirable spot to live in London among the super-rich, as Russian oligarchs drive a billionaire property boom in west London. In April 2014, 735 homes sold in the capital for more than £1 million. Of the mansions reaching seven figures, almost 200 of them cost more than £2 million. Over the past 12 months, there were 478 properties sold in Chelsea costing more than seven figures with 57 in excess of £5 million. According to these new figures, Chelsea is now far more desirable among oligarchs and billionaires than the traditional wealthy spots of Kensington, Mayfair and Knightsbridge. ensington was the second most popular destination for wealthy home K buyers, with 340 sales in the area - 44 of which cost more than £5 million. In third place was St John’s Wood, where there were 259 sales with 20 costing more than £5 million. Making up the top six were Knightsbridge, with 145 sales (45 were £5m+), Belgravia with 140 (29 at £5m+) and Mayfair, where there were 105 sales (19 at £5m+). The most expensive home sold in Chelsea was 11 Upper Phillimore Gardens, a seven bed mansion which fetched £28.5 million. 6 6 N OV E M B E R 2 0 1 4

A seven bedroom home on Cottesmore Gardens, which sold for £19.75 million, was followed by 50 Chelsea Square, a six bed pad that cost its new owner £13.5 million. Between them, the buyers of these three houses ended up paying more than £4.3 million in stamp duty. The Boltons in Chelsea, pictured, is currently on sale for £39.5 million which would cost a further £2.75 million in stamp duty for any prospective owner. Chelsea, which is made up of six ‘hamlets’ spread across almost 3,000 acres, is home to the likes of oligarch Roman Abramovich, socialite Amanda Eliyash and rock star Mick Jagger. The borough has the largest population of American citizens outside of the USA, making up 6.53 per cent of the current population of Chelsea. This is according to research by London estate agency Russell Simpson, which analysed statistics from LonRes. Alan Russell, from the agency, said: ”Chelsea is an area that is talked about globally. It is iconic, people from Britain and abroad aspire to live here, it has always been one of the most sought after areas in London. This has been highlighted in recent months, as Chelsea has outsold its prime Central London neighbours.” In the capital, house prices are increasing at 15 per cent, faster than they did at the height of the last boom in late 2009, while nationwide growth is nearer five per cent.

Carlow House Carlow Street, Camden Inspired by New York developments such as The Solaire, One57 and the Diane Von Furstenberg Studios where greenery and winter gardens are an integral design feature, Galliard Homes has launched London’s response; a stunning “garden focused” Manhattan loft-style scheme known as Carlow House on Carlow Street in Camden.

C

reated by award winning international designer Rabih Hage, the centerpiece of Carlow House is a vast communal glass roofed “winter garden”: the largest of its kind in a London housing scheme. This impressive glass roofed garden rises from ground to top fourth floor, with large windows, galleried landings and gangways, glazed internal balconies and planters filled with foliage looking into the atrium space on each level.

Positioned around the atrium are a collection of 85 one and two bedroom Manhattan loft style apartments with sleek fittings and classic warehouse features and finishes. Funky and rich in character, the lofts have timber flooring, generous ceiling heights, exposed brickwork, tall doors, commercial-style light fittings and large industrial windows. The lofts have hardwood flooring throughout all the principal rooms, mood/dimmer lighting, LED lighting and contrasting finishes of brick, Matt, brushed metal and polished chrome. The result is what designer Rabih Hage calls the “roughlux” look; a combination of the rough and the luxurious in the form of bold, expensively finished, interiors that combine raw and polished finishes to create highly unique striking living spaces. All the lofts have a spacious reception room, an open plan designer kitchen with dark grey units, stone worktops and Smeg integrated 6 8 N OV E M B E R 2 0 1 4

appliances. The bedrooms have full height built-in wardrobes and some have luxurious ensuite facilities. The bathrooms have large format stone-effect porcelain floor files contrasting with mosaic-style high-gloss wall tiles, steel bath, vintage style shower, bespoke cabinetry, and underfloor heating. David Galman, Sales Director at Galliard Homes said: “In New York at present the most fashionable pads are loft schemes with greenery and glass roofed atrium gardens. The modern mews Originally built to house staff and horses, London’s mews houses are ripe for redevelopment into desirable family homes.

S

et in quaint cobbled streets that feel more country lane than city centre, London’s mews houses are a paradox. They often have the best locations and come with accordingly high prices. To cater for their new, smarter owners – including families wanting more space and international buyers who prefer the lateral look – mews houses are undergoing a transformation.. For decades mews houses have followed a very traditional internal treatment as they seem to be a very British preserve with the much sought-after private front door. But this new style also gives you all the internal glamour and finish of new apartment blocks. It is not just one-off mews houses that are getting the new look; whole mews projects are cropping up across London. Clay Street in Marylebone is a boutique project of five properties, costing from £4.15million, with textured brick and timber facades and loads of light with floor-to-ceiling windows and staircases relegated to the back of the house. Whether they pay a genuine nod to the idyll and architecture of the old-style mews street or are essentially creating gated new-build terraces that capitalise on buyers’ love of having “mews” in the name, developers are finding innovative ways to overcome the old mews problem of a lack of light and outdoor space. Some, where permitted, are digging down or building up; all are opening up the interiors to be bright, open-plan and minimalist. And mews houses are in short supply and high demand, particularly among traditionally-minded British buyers and also Europeans. Should you want to create a new mews house of your own, finding the unmodernised version with scope for reinvention is the holy grail for would-be boutique developers. “The last one I tried to purchase for a client was fiercely competitive. It saw 38 bids and achieved £500,000 over the asking price,” says Rachel Thompson, partner at The Buying Solution.

It’s enough to frighten the horses. 7 0 N OV E M B E R 2 0 1 4

f Monaco and St Tropez are indeed among the world’s capitals of luxury, then this was to be the ultimate press trip exposé into lavish living and indulgence. Arriving from Gatwick with Monarch airlines (www.monarch.co.uk), we swooped down onto the sun-baked tarmac of Nice airport to be welcomed by Rumble Romagnoli, our host and director of luxury web marketing firm Relevance (www.relevanceweb.com).

We were instantly escorted to Monaco for the final day of the 24th edition of the Monaco Yacht Show (www.monacoyachtshow.com). Bottles of champagne and expensive entrées were liberally supplied and everywhere visitors were cordially met with open arms. In particular Lisa Peck, the global marketing manager of Fraser Yachts (www.fraseryachts.com), who welcomed us aboard four of their superyachts. We firstly visited the frankly outrageous 54m M/Y Sea Force One. Its sleek silver and black exterior did little to betray what lay on the inside: beyond a decadent lounge area with sumptuous décor, a neon lit living area designed for lavish parties that no pen can describe in writing. Head humming from the giddy combination of Mediterranean heat and sparkling wine, we were fortunately offered a seat in the shaded terraces of the highly exclusive Yacht Club de Monaco for an exquisite buffet of gourmet food served in regal quantities (www.yacht-club-monaco. mc). Not a moment was spared as we were soon once again upon the bustling ports of the Mediterranean principality and aboard the supreme 46.7m M/Y Lady Petra with its modern living areas shared between a Jacuzzi and expansive lounge and dining decks. We were also introduced to the high-performance chase boat M/Y

YXT One and finally M/Y Ulysses, an altogether more traditional vessel with a neo-classical interior design across all the floors of its 56m body. Departing to the deafening roar of 150 superyacht horns ceremoniously signalling the exhibition’s end, we returned to Nice to dine on chef Jean Michel’s regional delicacies at the classy HANgoût restaurant, including an expertly rendered tender cut of beef. Seven contented journalists, stomachs full, stumbled back to the comforts of luxury four star Hotel Aston La Scala, to enjoy drinks and spectacular views over the Place Masséna from the rooftop terrace and bar (www.hotel-aston.com). The following morning, a chauffeured drive along the Cote d’Azur lay ahead, finally ending at the enchanting gulf of St Tropez’s natural terminus: the illustrious port of St Tropez. 28th September marked the second day of the famous ‘Les Voiles de St Tropez’ regatta

The host port is alive with the hum of celebrities mingling with billionaires in luxury beachside restaurants (www.lesvoilesdesaint-tropez.fr/en). The host port is alive with the hum of celebrities mingling with billionaires in luxury beachside restaurants and the sound of popping champagne corks and clacking camera shutters. Indeed everything is excess in the small port town, never more so than on the day of the regatta itself. Steeped in history, we crossed the port’s ancient ramparts to soak in the view of the rows of moored racing yachts, before heading to Relais Chateaux’s ‘Pan Deï Palais’ (www.pandei.com). The luxury hotel, a historic building itself, was originally constructed by a French general in homage to the beautiful Princess Bannu Pan Deï, and provided a fittingly romantic and extravagant setting for the final meal of our press trip. There was little antiquity to be admired in the fine four course meal we enjoyed there however. All of the dishes were irresistibly light and demonstrated the cunning of modern cuisine, with interesting and original flavour combinations in the Sea Bream wrapped in banana leaf, the Tiger tear steak with sweet potato and ‘jus’, and the sublime blackberry soufflé accompanied by pear sorbet for dessert. There was scarcely time to savour the Provençal cuisine however as we were quickly whisked aboard a Grand Banks boat with the nautical equivalent of front row seats for the thrilling regatta race. Chasing behind some of the

performance sailing yachts in action, the unadulterated excitement of Les Voiles de Saint Tropez was almost tangible. The heady heights of spectating the race from the top deck’s sun drenched seats were soon to become heightened further still, as we shortly found ourselves looking down upon the famed ports of the French Riviera through the window of our return flight home. Thus concluding a wonderful weekend of luxury on the magical Cote d’Azur.

“Buy To Let Is For Mugs!”

Earn 10% per year return for the next decade owning a dementia care home suite You rarely become wealthy by following the crowd and doing what everyone else does. And it’s clear that tens of thousands of people are entering the Buy To Let market in the belief that residential property is a one-way ticket to long term prosperity.

London Buy-To-Let Yields Are Now Below 3% That view is not born out by the facts. As prices continue to rise due to record low interest rates, net rental yields in London are falling to 3% or less. And that’s before you consider the hassle factor of being a private landlord. The market can go for decades with little or no capital growth, a historical fact ignored by many because they are too young to remember it.

This Commercial Property Yields 10% p.a. for 10 Years The good news is that a better alternative now exists for those savvy investors willing to be different to the madding crowd. Because it’s classed as commercial property, its value is based on its rental yield. There’s a huge social need which means demand massively outstrips supply in every area of the country. I’m talking about dementia care homes.

Helping Address the Dementia Epidemic With 820,000 dementia sufferers in the UK, it’s not surprising David Cameron has held two G8 Summits on the issue in London in recent months. One major local authority admits that only 12% of its care home stock meets the latest standards of the EU and the sector regulator, the Care Quality Commission. Yet our old friends the banks are still refusing to

lend against off-plan care home projects. So developers have had to get creative by enabling private investors like you and I to own individual suites on a 125 year lease. We lease the suite back to them for 10 years on a fixed rental return of 10% per annum, and there are a range of exit strategies during and after the 10 year period.

Savills Have Confirmed The Value & Feasibility Of the Project The dementia facility we can invest in is called Clifton Moor and its located near Wigan in Greater Manchester. It’s a 70 suite care home with every room overlooking the courtyard gardens or open fields. An independent report by Savills has confirmed the value of the home and its feasibility in the market, while KPMG have advised on the tax aspects for private investors. We can own a suite outright for £90,000 and receive £9,000 a year income, or place a deposit of £36,000 and take the remainder as an interest free loan paid back from rental income.

Watch This Video That Explains Why I’ve Invested In This Project I’ve recorded a detailed video to explain the whole concept and why I’ve invested in it myself. You’ll find it at www.CareInvest.co.uk When you understand the full details of this opportunity, I’m sure you’ll see why I believe that, in comparison, Buy-to-let is for mugs! Warm regards

The Ultimate Luxury Chocolate Gift for Christmas The Chocolate was born with a vision for the perfect synergy. A fusion of British Artisan & Italian Passion.

T

hey use award winning chocolate – Toscano Black, Amedei, Armand de Brignac champagne(Ace of Spades) voted No.1 Champagne in the world and create bespoke, handmade, champagne truffles. They have them enrobed, by hand, in edible pure 24 carat gold flakes and present them in contemporary, chic, Swarovski adorned boxes. “Thus providing the most luxurious chocolate experience in the World”.

What is it ?

In its simplest form we are talking about an amazing ‘experience’. Handmade truffles using an award winning, Italian chocolate, filled with champagne, flaked with edible, pure 24-carat gold all enclosed within bespoke handcrafted boxes encrusted with Swarovski Crystals inside and out. As all Swarovski are applied by hand no two boxes will ever be the same. The chocolate itself is 63% Toscano Black sourced from a tiny artisan chocolate maker based just outside historic Pisa. The cocoa beans are refined using a traditional granite stone mill and the result has been judged by the Academy of Chocolate as officially the best in the world. What experts call the ganache basically the mixture of cocoa, cream and a variety of other ingredients to form what consumers think of as, well, the chocolate – that forms ‘the Chocolate’ is a closely guarded secret but the Chocolate are happy to confirm that there are several glasses of champagne added to the normal recipe. “As we make everything freshly to order we can, of course, produce ‘the Chocolate’ without alcohol if required.”

You Eat the Gold?

It’s the world’s most expensive foodstuff and has been eaten for 7 6 N OV E M B E R 2 0 1 4

millennia. Although the Ancient Egyptians believed it gave them immortality no such claims are made for ‘the Chocolate.’ (yet). However other authorities do claim that gold has many attributes when eaten, including generating a higher IQ, managing rheumatoid arthritis, developing mystic power and contributing to a long and healthy life. More seriously it is authorised for use in food products in both Europe and the USA. High quality chocolate also has its enthusiasts. They claim that chocolate with over 60% cocoa content (‘the Chocolate’ has 63%) reduces blood pressure, decreases the chance of both diabetes and heart attack, improves the memory and even eases a persistent cough amongst a plethora of other attributes. Be that as it may the fact remains that ‘the Chocolate’ has a fantastic taste that will exceed the expectations of the wildest choccie enthusiast. And the memory of the experience will last and last.

The Products

The large Boxes contain 15 chocolates with a minimum weight of 200 grammes. Large boxes start from £70 including postage and packing. Delivery of this unique hand-made product is within five days or can be expressed for specific delivery date.

here’s something at Chamberlain’s to please everyone. One of the City’s foremost fish restaurants, this thriving business in historic Leadenhall Market - owned by one of Billingsgate’s leading wholesalers, that supplies the top London hotels - has long had a flourishing lunchtime trade. And now it is becoming very popular in the evenings too; Chamberlain’s has recently introduced a five-course tasting menu, which is available at lunchtime and in the evenings and offers excellent value at just £49.50. Chamberlain’s award-winning executive chef, Andrew Jones, who has worked in some of London leading five-star hotel restaurants, has created the menu and is it already proving a great success with City-based foodies. Andrew Jones says: “The nature of the City is changing; we are finding that our traditional business is being augmented by a growing tourist and leisure trade. Chamberlain’s is now regarded as a destination restaurant. Clients have told us that they want us to extend their dining experience with a tasting menu. This is something we have always offered as a bespoke service to regular customers, but feel the time is right to include it on our main menu. “The tasting menu offers a great opportunity to try several dishes from our menu in one visit – it comprises smaller portions of dishes on the a la carte menu, and changes on a regular basis. We’ve kept it to five courses so that clients with limited time can enjoy it in around 90 minutes, fitting in with business lunches. And of course, it can be enjoyed over a longer period in the evening!” The menu changes seasonally, but currently starts with Cèpes Galette, a few ‘delicious, intense mushroomy

mouthfuls’ to whet the appetite, followed by Sautéed Foie Gras, garnished with pineapple chutney and spiced bread. Next, with a nod to the superb fish available from parent company, fish wholesaler Chamberlain and Thelwell, comes Baked Paupiette of Lemon Sole & Crab Mousse. This magnificent creation is artfully presented and served with butternut squash, forest mushrooms, spring onions and crab cream. Roasted Rose County Fillet Steak follows, then Crème Caramel, with baked figs macerated in Marsala. Wine pairing is available for an additional £35. And, as with all their menus, a full vegetarian alternative menu is offered and any special dietary requirements can be catered for on request. The business also has a very successful events catering enterprise, which caters for all manner of functions, from an intimate gathering in someone’s home to a sumptuous feast for 2000 people in one of the City livery halls. www.chamberlainsoflondon.com

he ‘Gigi’s’ is aimed squarely at the fabulously rich of Mayfair, where property regularly fetches over £40million. It is made with a vintage champagne and an ultra-rare Armagnac brandy that pre-dates the Boer War. The result is described as ‘liquid gold’ and will set the drinker back £8,888.

It was created for actress Grace Jones at the star-studded opening of Gigi’s restaurant in Mayfair last month, which the 007 star attended with her friend Boy George. Cesare Papagna, the restaurant’s manager, said he wanted to give the iconic film star something “truly special” to mark the occasion. The Gigi’s has the appearance of a traditional champagne cocktail which is usually laced with cognac and bitters. However it is made with a bottle of 1990 Vintage Cristal and a bottle of 1888 Samalens Vieille Relique Vintage Bas 8 4 N OV E M B E R 2 0 1 4

Armagnac, and topped with ‘lashings’ of gold leaf, to give it extra bling. Only the Angostura Bitters and sugar are bought ‘off the shelf’. The makers claim the Gigi’s tops the world’s most expensive drinks - beating Melbourne’s £8,167 ‘Winston’ into second place.

The cocktail’s hefty price tag includes the market value of each full bottle of alcohol, which will produce approximately 12 flute servings worth £708 per glass - or about £177 per glug based on four large mouthfuls. Cesare said: “We did not set out to create a cocktail for the fabulously rich but rather to give Ms Jones something memorable to thank her for coming. “The taste was magnificent, as you would imagine.” He said the Gigi’s will not be added to the restaurant’s drinks menu but will be available to other “discerning” guests from now on. He added: “The Gigi’s isn’t the kind of cocktail that you display on a blackboard - if you have to ask the price, you won’t be able to afford it.” 22 Woodstock Street (off New Bond Street) Mayfair, London W1C2AR Tel 0207 491 8638 reservations@gigimayfair.com www.gigismayfair.com

Rémy Martin to open it’s first ever private members club…

La Maison Rèmy Martin

R

émy Martin is opening its first members club, for two weeks only from 25th November – 6th December 2014, on 19 Greek Street in Soho. What this means for the capital’s cognac favouring populace is bespoke cocktails, creative workshops and an exclusive setting to experience both.

for a masterclass on Rémy Martin cognac, hosted by International Brand Ambassadors. The next story will host “L’Atelier Rémy Martin”, an exclusive space where Rémy Martin will collaborate with selected lifestyle brands to offer creative workshops.

The exclusive club will feature two bars and take over all four floors at 19 Greek Street in Soho.

The first floor has been selected for the VSOP Bar & Lounge, a space where five of London’s most talented mixologists, including Agostino Perrone from The Connaught Bar, Erik Lorincz from The American Bar at The Savoy and Alex Kratena from the Artesian will exhibit their respective talents. They’re going to create a unique, bespoke cocktail menu, especially for La Maison Rémy Martin. On the 2nd floor of the club, guests will find the “Cognathèque”. A rather interesting choice of name for a retail space that is to house an elegant seating area, besides, of course Rémy Martin cognacs, including special editions and a range of historical bottles. The Cognathèque, we hear, will also be used

They say the idea behind 19 Greek Street is to have a space for experimentation and advancement in design. So its only fair that the floor will also display selected pieces from the Rémy Martin-ECAL collaboration. Titled Futur Heritage project, it had ten graduate Master students explore the theme of mixology and create unique interpretations of the modern cognac consumption. Further up, the 4th floor is to have the Rémy Martin XO lounge, a bar at which guests can try Rémy Martin XO serves. La Maison Rémy Martin is an exclusive private members club. Members are personally invited and only members can access La Maison, book events and contact the Concierge directly. To apply for membership, please visit www.remymartin.com

For the first time, Annabel’s, the iconic luxury private member’s club in London, is being unveiled to the world in an incredible documentary film.

S

ituated on Berkeley Square in London’s exclusive Mayfair district, the Club is a world of elegance and style. There, members can relax with an expertly created cocktail in the intimacy of the bar, before moving through to enjoy an exquisite dinner in the beautiful dining room, with its Moorish ceiling and unique starlit dance floor. Ridley Scott Associates approached Annabel’s to produce a documentary opening the doors to its incredible history, the amazing people who have visited and the incredible staff who have made Annabel’s the place it is today. They worked for over a year on the material and interviews and have had access to the never before seen archive. The film includes interviews with high-profile celebrities including Kate Moss, Lady Gaga, Bryan Ferry, Goldie Hawn, Anna Wintour as well as the club’s staff from over the years. “I remember the first time I walked into Annabel’s, it was 1970 and I was making my second movie and I’d never been to London, and I remember going into this club and feeling like I was absolutely transported… it was like an extraordinarily designed and conceived place, where you never wanted to leave. It was warm, the colours, the reds, it had this elegance to it, and yet you felt that you could put your feet up’ Goldie Hawn “I really love it here at Annabel’s I started out playing in restaurants and bars and nightclubs so being here is a real treat for me because I get to do a more intimate type of performance where I can say what I like and do what I like….‘There is no trickery when it’s just a bitch and a piano. It is what it is, you have to really give it to them” Lady Gaga “Everybody knows everybody…”Hello, Miss Moss” Everyone arrives together but when they leave they are a little bit staggering’ Kate Moss

“It is the only nightclub that the Queen has ever been to…she drank gin martini, no lemon. I serve people from all round the world, movie stars, royalty from all different countries but to serve Her Majesty the Queen, Elizabeth, was the greatest honour I have ever had’. Abderrazat Mohammed Ghannam, Club Ambassador

Annabel’s can lay claim to a distinguished heritage that rivals that of luxury establishments across the world. Founded in 1963 by legendary entrepreneur Mark Birley, and named after his wife, it was the country’s first of its kind: a Members-only nightclub that catered to an exclusive clientele. Frank Sinatra was among the first to join and, since then, its illustrious clientele has included representatives of the British Royal Family – among them HRH The Prince of Wales, HRH The Duke of Cambridge; heads of state, such as Richard Nixon; and legends of the music and film industry, including Ella Fitzgerald, Jack Nicholson, The Rolling Stones and Dames Elizabeth Taylor and Shirley Bassey. Over the years, Annabel’s has hosted some truly wonderful parties, including a week of fashion shows – devised by the late Alexander McQueen and Simon Costin – featuring the largest collection of diamonds ever displayed in Britain; an exclusive dinner party with British royalty – Princess Margaret – and Hollywood royalty – Frank Sinatra; and the memorable fancy-dress hen party of Sarah, Duchess of York – one of her guests, dressed in the guise of a policeman, was the late Princess Diana. The documentary premiered on 28th October and runs at the Curzon Cinema in London over a period of approximately 6 weeks. Sydenham High girls take a stand to make a difference

S

ydenham High School GDST is rightly proud of its excellent academic success but the school is equally proud of the way in which its students constantly make a difference to others in the wider community, with a strong tradition in inventive charity fundraising.

When Year 8 decided they wanted to make a difference for Cancer Research UK, they took the title of charity’s latest campaign – Stand Up To Cancer - quite literally. Grace Rowney and Ester Schomberg (aged 12) came up with the idea of getting the entire year to hold a sponsored stand for at least four hours on Friday 17 October – the culmination of the campaign and date of its live TV fundraiser on Channel 4. The girls carefully worked out how to spread their standing time across the school day and then got the support of their teachers.

What makes us different is the difference we make... From scientific exploration to personal discovery, our outstanding education goes way beyond the curriculum Find out more at our open events: Junior Tuesday 4 November 9.30-11am Senior Wednesday 5 November 9.30-11am Tuesday 11 November 9.30-11am Closing dates for 2015 applications: 17 Nov (Year 7) & 12 Dec (Year 12) 020 8557 7004 admissions@syd.gdst.net www.sydenhamhighschool.gdst.net 15 & 19 Westwood Hill, London, SE26 6BL

Grace and Ester gave a class assembly to explain the campaign and inspire everyone to get as much sponsorship as possible. They also used the campaign’s catchphrase poster game and, on the day, rattled collecting tins to raise yet more money. The original fund raising target was £500 but with everyone’s efforts the girls are well on the way to making almost twice that amount to go towards the charity’s vital research work. Asked what had triggered their support, Grace said: “I did it because we all want to beat cancer sooner.” Ester added: ”On the day it was great fun and all of our year got behind it and supported it. Sarum Hall

l ves green! G WORDS BY CHRISTINE SMITH

oing green isn’t anything new to us. When Sarum Hall began in 1928 a green school uniform was chosen – which we still proudly wear today. Nearly ninety years on, we enthusiastically embrace being green in the modern sense of the word by doing all we can to be a sustainable organisation. We aim to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. We stick to these three R’s wherever possible and educate our families to do the same. We are delighted that we achieved first place in the Camden in Bloom competition this year. The hard work of our girls has also won us the title of ‘greenest school’, which is brilliant news. We were especially commended for encouraging our girls to be greener and for introducing ethical initiatives. It’s a fantastic title and we’re very proud. Our Eco - Club were lucky enough to be invited to collect the award from the Mayor of Camden. He was delighted to receive a basket of our home grown produce to enjoy (apples, grapes, tomatoes and courgettes – delicious). Being a London school we don’t have a massive amount of outdoor space but we do have a big passion for our environment, so we’ve certainly made the most of what we do have. It’s been wonderful to see just how much we’ve been able to achieve in a relatively short time; an environmental pond, calm and fragrant spaces, edible

herbs, bird and bat boxes, a fruit and vegetable garden and a wildlife habitat. We are amazed at the number of mini beasts, birds and small mammals that have moved in at Sarum Hall and the lifecycles we are able to observe. Our chef has enjoyed including our organic produce into our lunches – our broccoli was especially tender and tasty and our home grown salad leaves and herbs make delicious accompaniments to our meals. Our green-fingered gardening club have sown seeds, planted bulbs, plants and trees as well as colourful flower pots and window boxes. Our green girls are taking home their skills and knowledge, even if they don’t have access to a garden they have experienced the rewarding wonders of growing plants. As Headmistress at Sarum Hall, my greatest pleasure has been observing the genuine enthusiasm and awe the girls have developed whilst creating our green and pleasant environments. ‘Green is the prime colour of the world, and that from which its loveliness arises.’ Pedro Calderon de la Barca

ith Felices Erimus as its motto, happiness is at the heart of the philosophy at St John’s Wood Pre-Preparatory School and it works. Educating three to seven year-old boys and girls in a friendly and caring environment for over 30 years is its strength and proprietor Adrian Ellis believes that the excellent ratio of staff to pupils allows each child to reach their full potential. “Of course, together with parents, we look to establish each child’s unique qualities and particular talents and aim to develop them as fully as possible,” says Mr Ellis. “We want our children to move on to the right schools for them.” As a result St John’s Wood PrePreparatory has since 1982 been a ‘feeder’ to many of London’s top preparatory schools, among them Colet Court, Highgate, South Hampstead High School and University College School. “The sense of a whole-school community is evident in this small school,” adds Mr Ellis. “Size matters to St John’s Wood Pre-Prep. By limiting its numbers, most children know the rest of their fellow pupils throughout the school – an important element in building confidence and developing social skills. Hurtwood House is a boarding school with a difference

A

...a big difference!

lthough it has all the facilities of a typical public school, it specialises exclusively in the sixth form and the age range 16-18. Changing schools at 16 opens up a whole new world of fresh experiences and challenges and provides the perfect steppingstone between school and university. Hurtwood House is young, exciting and dynamic and, most importantly of all, it is exceptionally creative with drama, media, art, textiles, dance, music and singing to die for. Famous former students include Oscar-winner Hans Zimmer (music for Gladiator, Rain Main, Lion King) and Golden Globe winner Emily Blunt (The Devil Wears Prada, Gideon’s Daughter) and watch out for Hollywood hot-tip Jack Huston (Factory Girl). Zara Brownless (winner of the first Young Apprentice) But marvellous as the performing and creative arts are, this school is definitely not a one-trick pony. It also caters for the budding entrepreneur, doctor, lawyer, architect, etc etc etc with a range of subjects which, though less eye-catching, are no less successful and inspirational. Small wonder, then, that the world is beating a path to Hurtwood’s door, and one of the first things to strike visitors is that it has a completely different “campus” feel about it – not like school at all. That’s because there are no juniors – everybody here is 16+ and they all join after they have taken 1 0 0 N OV E M B E R 2 0 1 4

their GCSE’s. In many ways, it defies definition - more public school than sixth form college, but smaller and less institutional – more boutique than department store. At the moment it’s in a class of its own but one suspects that one day soon there will be more schools like this, because five years is a long time to be in one public school, and so many boys and girls are now ready at 16 for a fresh challenge and a more stimulating life. A lot of parents agree wholeheartedly. As one satisfied customer puts it: “We have had four children through the public school system and I think that Hurtwood House is the only one which has really delivered what it promised.” Indeed, Hurtwood has a file of letters as thick as your arm from grateful parents, and clearly what they appreciate most is that Hurtwood has given their children the confidence to cope with anything in life and has fired up their enthusiasm. “Her mind was turned on,” says one, “and her appetite for learning is voracious. I want you to know that you lit the fuse.”

Frustrated by the uniformity of high-street jewellery, Rosita Heshmati’s discoveries inspired her to set up an online designer jewellery boutique. osita’s craving for quality and expressive unique designs for everyday wear and special occasions led to her buying jewellery directly from small designers during frequent trips to southern Europe. “I soon had a jewellery box full of these wonderful creations and became the envy of my friends who started asking me to choose items for them whenever business or pleasure took me back to this beautiful part of the world. Nothing makes me happier than scouring the small streets of Venice or Istanbul for undiscovered creative gems.” The realisation that many other women desire the same thing - jewellery that sets them apart with its originality and finesse that comes from centuries of traditional jewellerymaking, combined with a Mediterranean lyrical expressionism - prompted her to explore showcasing her collections and so Expressions Des Bijoux was born. “Men were also very much in mind when we set up the business”, Rosita commented. “There is little more intimate or seductive for a woman

than receiving a piece of jewellery as a gift, but men are often unsure about what to choose or how to go about it. We also have a section of our new website which guides men through the giftbuying process - and of course, we are always happy to help directly with suggestions too.”

Men were also very much in mind when we set up the business Rosita’s love of beauty and belief in the power of adornment began at an early age, when, during a childhood in her native Iran, she watched her mother create bespoke wedding gowns for brides-to-be. “I would sit quietly, for hour after hour, noting how a small cut or shape change could transform a dress and its wearer; how certain materials fell and draped; how handsewn pearls or beads added lustre and watching, mesmerised, as women were transformed before my eyes for their big day.” After moving to the UK, Rosita continued her

love of design into her own career as an interior designer, enjoying both the beauty of aesthetic arrangement alongside the drive and excitement of business and it is these skills she has brought together for her new enterprise, where jewellery across a whole range of tastes and prices features beautiful stones such as citrines, aquamarines, tourmalines and turquoise, alongside precious metals.

All your jewellery needs from one unique brand, bringing hidden treasures from Europe and the Mediterranean together for the first time ever… “My mission is simple” she said, “to give women access to stunning jewellery, reflecting a variety of tastes and styles from refined simplicity to luxurious drama. I believe that women can fill a whole jewellery box in one go with us and still know they will be the only ones in the board room, at the party or wedding, to be wearing these wonderful pieces.” ExpressionsDesBijoux.com EdesB.com

Cosmetic Dermatologist, Dr Ariel Haus Introduces...

Ultherapy an Uplift... not a Facelift!

The new non-invasive lifting and toning procedure that reaches the same tissue targeted in a facelift but without disrupting the surface of the skin. No downtime. Visible improvement usually seen after just one treatment.

B

razilian Dermatologist, Dr Haus is proud to offer the acclaimed non-surgical lifting procedure Ultherapy, which is the only FDA-approved non-invasive treatment for lifting the skin on the neck, chin and brow and to improve lines and wrinkles on the décolletage. Ultherapy uses focused ultrasound technology to stimulate collagen deep within the skin without downtime. The result? Tighter, betterfitting skin... even on the neck! What is unique about this procedure? Ultherapy is the only non-invasive treatment that can specifically target the deep foundation below the skin, that which is typically addressed in cosmetic surgery, but without cutting or disrupting the surface of the skin. It is also the only procedure to use ultrasound imaging, which allows the doctor to actually see the layers of tissue to target during treatment and ensure the energy is directed to precisely where it will be most effective. Dr Haus says, “Being able to offer my patients the ultimate skin technology that Ultherapy offers, allows them the opportunity to walk away with skin that they only remembered from their youth. It gives me great pleasure to see the difference in not just their outer appearance but their inner confidence too; they step out of my clinic with a bounce in their step.” Who can have the treatment? Ultherapy is safe and effective for all skin types and colours.

before treatment

after treatment

How long will the treatment take? In just one hour - and without any downtime - you will be well on your way to tighter, better-fitting skin. How many sessions would I need? Only one treatment is required; however, some patients may benefit from more than one treatment depending on how much laxity they have, and their body’s own biological response to the ultrasound and collagen-building process. How long do results last? Improvement following treatment is cumulative, and most patients treated with Ultherapy still have fresh young collagen a year following the procedure. How long until I see results? Patients may enjoy some initial effect but the ultimate lifting and toning will take place over 2-3 months, as tired collagen is replaced with new, more elastic collagen. As this collagen-building process continues, further improvements can appear up to 6 months following a procedure. Ultherapy lifts and tones your skin in one transforming treatment, minus the downtime! For Appointments Telephone 020 7323 6559 10 Harley Street, London W1G 9PF www.drhausdermatology.com

Get Ski Fit

I

How to get fit for your skiing trip

f you want to seriously get into the sport, you need to make sure your skiing fitness is up to scratch. So, to make sure that you’re not left nursing aching muscles – or worse – after your first day careering down the slopes, check out our guide to getting ski-fit. Flying down the slopes all day on two narrow strips of fibreglass with only a pair of thin poles for support will place unique demands on your body. To cope with these demands, you’ll need to focus on the following three key areas for your training to boost your skiing fitness:

SKIING STRENGTH Skiing demands specific training for improving your strength. The primary areas to focus on for skiing fitness strength are: Legs Focusing on the quadriceps muscles at the fronts of the thighs is particularly important, because maintaining the correct skiing position means that the quadriceps will be loaded the whole time. Triceps To maintain your balance when skiing, you will have to continually drive your ski poles back into the snow – and the specific muscles that facilitate this are the triceps at the back of the upper arms. Core muscles Your core muscles will keep you upright and help you to balance. Without good core strength, you will have no control on the slopes.

CARDIOVASCULAR SKI FITNESS You won’t be running or moving forward under your own steam for most of the time when you’re skiing, but that doesn’t mean you won’t need good cardiovascular (CV) fitness. Skiing requires total body control in order to stay upright – and this will place a continual demand on your CV system as you employ every muscle group in order to remain balanced.

1 1 6 N OV E M B E R 2 0 1 4

FLEXIBILITY TRAINING If you’re flexible, you will have a good range of movement, which is extremely important when it comes to skiing fitness. Additionally, being flexible in the calves and Achilles tendons (at the backs of the lower legs) is vital, because your ski boots will force you to ‘hinge’ at the heel, thereby stretching both the calf and the Achilles in each leg. If you’re tight in either of these areas, your risk of injury will be much higher.

HOW TO AVOID SKIING INJURIES The last thing that you want to do on your skiing holiday is get an injury – so the best thing to do is prepare your body correctly by building up your skiing fitness. For injury prevention, your main focus should be on flexibility training, particularly in the legs. As we have mentioned, the calves and Achilles tendons are important to your flexibility – but you should also ensure that you are loose and supple in the following two areas: Quadriceps (front of the thigh). Hamstrings (back of the thigh). However good your preparation is, though, one thing is certain when you go skiing: at some point or other, you’re going to fall over. So, to avoid common injuries such as broken collarbones, work on your all-round mobility as much as possible. This way you will be in control of your body, and so when you do fall over you will be able to position yourself quickly and easily – rather than be awkward and stiff in your movements – which will make you less liable to suffer an injury. Additionally, try to have a couple of sports massages as part of your après-ski routine, as these will flush out the waste products in your muscles from your day’s skiing and help to keep your muscles in tiptop condition throughout your holiday. Skiing is all about fun, and you certainly don’t have to be an elite athlete to enjoy the sport!

The reason behind the

Movember Movement O

ctober is known as Breast awareness month throughout the world and therefore highlights womens’ health issues. November has now become seen as men’s health month because of Movember. It’s been 11 years since Movember first burst onto the scene in Melbourne, Australia and in that time it’s grown to become one of the largest men’s health charities in the world. A mere 30 people first participated in 2003, a vast contrast to the 4 million who have fundraised since, the 20 countries taking part each year and the £346 million raised. But with November now upon us and with our moustaches primed and ready to blossom, can you actually explain who and what Movember supports or even some of the signs and symptoms to look out for in your adult life? Here is an overview of four of the more common men’s health problems.

Prostate Cancer The prostate is a small gland in the pelvis and is generally about the size of a walnut. It is located between the penis and bladder and its main function is to help in the production of semen. Prostate cancer remains the most common cancer in men. Each year in the UK men diagnosed with prostate cancer are estimated at 36,000. On most occasions the cancer usually causes no symptoms until it has grown to a size large enough to start pressuring the urethra. Some of the more common symptoms include... Frequent urination, most often during the night A constant need to rush to the toilet Difficulty urinating or taking a long time or weak flow Feeling of a full bladder after urinating While these symptoms may not suggest you have prostate cancer, it’s important to always visit your Doctor for investigation.

Testicular Cancer Testicular cancer remains an uncommon type of cancer that primarily affects younger men. The most common symptom is a painless lump or swelling in one of your testicles. Other symptoms can include... A dull ache or sharp pain in your testicles or scrotum A feeling of heaviness in your scrotum A dull ache in your lower stomach area A general feeling of being unwell and fatigued

1 1 8 N OV E M B E R 2 0 1 4

Research has shown that less than 4% of testicular lumps are cancerous but that doesn’t mean you should ignore a lump or swelling in your testicle, therefore it’s crucial to visit your Doctor as soon as possible.

Bowel Cancer The incidence of bowel cancer is on the increase however if caught early and the troublesome polyps are removed during colonoscopy it is easily treatable avoiding major surgery and with a very good survival rate. The common signs or symptoms that require investigation by a Specialist are... 1. Rectal bleed – especially dark stool and blood mixed in the stool 2. Black tar like stool 3. Change in bowel habit lasting more than 4 weeks ie diarrhoea / constipation 4. Mass / Lump protruding at anal verge 5. Symptoms and signs of anaemia eg blood test shows iron deficiency / anaemia 6. Positive faecal occult blood test 7. Faecal urgency - urge to defecate without relief 8. Faecal incontinence 9. Pain at / or discharge from anus 10. Pain at / or discharge / or lump in natal cleft

Skin Cancer (melanoma) Melanoma is one of the most common forms of skin cancer and refers to a mole that may change with time and have the potential to become cancerous (malignant melanoma). The vast majority of moles remain benign (non-cancerous) but a small number may change size, colour, become itchy, bleed or hurt and should be examined immediately by a Doctor if this is the case. Once the mole is observed it should be removed properly so it can be thoroughly examined for cancer. Most moles removed turn out to be fine, but please visit your Doctor if you have a mole that’s causing any sign of problems. There must be an easier way to weight loss?

Becky before

Becky’s story

L

osing weight is never easy, my weight fluctuated throughout my twenties but after having my children I really started to pile on the pounds. I tried everything from Boot Camp Yoga to running to the Dukan diet. Nothing worked. As my weight creeping up I found myself struggling to fit into size 16 clothes and began to feel more hopeless and desperate.

I have already lost 18 kilos and it hasn’t been a t a chore I love it. The help I have been given has helped dismiss loads of those negative thoughts I had around eating and losing weight. It made me see there was a different way, a smart and simple way that meant I could lose weight and keep it off, all I needed was the right help and encouragement. Now I feel so much more in control of other areas of my life as well.

Then I found out about Weightmedics through a friend. She had lost 10 kilos in a month and said that she could still eat what she wanted (within reason) I was desperate to lose weight and what really attracted me was the fact there were no humiliating group weigh-ins I would be seen privately by a doctor and the programme would be tailored to me.

Now I am closer to my ideal weight I want to try their latest in body sculpting technologies The 3D Lipomed. It is a revolutionary treatment that can treat stubborn pockets of fat. Effectively freezing and reducing unwanted flab it leaves you with an attractive, toned appearance. What’s even better is this procedure is entirely non-invasive.

My first consultation started with free 20 minute consultation with a patient care manager who took me through everything and helped me decide which programme to go for before I saw the Doctor.

So it will be goodbye for good to my muffin tops and bingo wings! Finally I found there is an easier way to lose weight and it’s called Weightmedics.

Before Treatment

Now I go for my expert consultations with the doctor every week and follow a weight loss programme around eating healthy meals along with some medication which helps with my cravings making it much easier to stick to my new regime. This costs me just £99 a month. 1 2 2 N OV E M B E R 2 0 1 4

JOHN BLY ANTIQUES

Yule W

hen Lord David died in 1929 Henrietta inherited £15 million, an unheard of sum at the time. Thereafter her interests ranged from big-game hunting, world cruising, stud farming, cattle ranching and film making.

Her money, flair and energy built a world famous breed of Arab horses, The Hanstead Stud, second only to Crabbetts in horse-breeding history, the first privately owned steam powered yacht, the S. Y. Nahlin, and an iconic film studio, for in 1934 it was Lady Yule in collaboration with J. Arthur Rank and John Corefield who founded The British Films Institute. Remarkably, all of the above still exist.

She also had a ranch called ‘Tecolote’ in Santa Barbara, California, which sadly does not. It was here she befriended the renowned Western artist Edward Borien whom she commissioned to paint frescos, large water colours and individual place cards for lavish dinner parties. 1 3 4 N OV E M B E R 2 0 1 4

While the impact of Lord David Yule’s production of jute and tea on the economic structure of India since the early 20th century cannot be overstated it is the story of his widow, Lady Annie Henrietta that holds the most fascination. In 1936 she further commissioned a large photograph album by the esteemed photographer Bert Clarke Thayer containing views of Tecolote and Lady Yule with her daughter Gladys and friends in Western and English attire together with ranch hands roping and branding cattle and a rare image of Edward Borein outside his studio in El Paseo de la Guerra. While taking this extended vacation Lady Yule made her yacht The Nahlin available to King Edward VIII and Mrs. Wallis Simpson for their ill-fated holiday in the Mediterranean. The yacht’s pennant and other significant fitments were presented to the Royal Maritime Museum in Greenwich London through the good offices of John Bly and remain there to this day. The S.Y. Nahlin has been fully refitted and is now in private ownership after an almost equally chequered career. John Bly, 533 Kings Road, Chelsea john@johnbly.com

E

Easigrass is the most trusted artificial grass company in the UK. And with good reason. This year alone, Easigrass has installed artificial grass at some of Great Britain’s most quintessential locations: from Wimbledon VIP areas and Hotel Café Royal balconies to supporting their valued retail partner, John Lewis, with an 150th Anniversary roof garden.

E Environmentally responsible: no Easigrass installation is completed unless a site has flora or fauna in the vicinity to help support The Wildlife Corridor in the form of a plant, tree, shrub or plant pot. Even the smallest of balconies can be transformed with a flash of Easigrass and a potted shrub or plant. A Accreditation: all Easigrass products are ISO:9001 and ISO:14001 certified and the Company is proud to be closely linked with respected horticultural and gardening societies including HTA (Horticultural Trade Association), SDG (The Society of Garden Designers), BALI (British Association of Landscape Industries), and RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects). S Safety: Easigrass products provide family safety as well as optimum quality, with the option of laying additional shock pad in wet or dry areas housing pools or trampolines. In addition, Easigrass products are pet friendly and make it easier to keep your pets and their environment clean, fresh and mud free. I Integrity: the Easigrass group prides itself on its commitment to excellence at all levels and guarantees that installations are carried out professionally, at the time of installation and in relation to maintenance and follow-up.

The Easigrass Group of Companies is rapidly expanding throughout the UK and overseas within UAE, South Africa, Spain and the Balaerics. So whether you seek an artificial lawn solution for your family or holiday home, there is only one option. The EASI option.

HOUSE & GARDEN

Time to make changes to the “Grey World” of design “Grey is the colour of the decade” according to a recent article in the Guardian and we can see the colour wherever we look: restaurants and shops paint their facades and walls in it, fashion magazines show clothing in the colour (even grey nail varnish is popular!) and home style magazines feature homes in grey. Grey has become our colour of choice and embodies the spirit of the post-boom era. It’s often said that the colours we choose to decorate our homes are a reflection of our collective psyche and, supposedly, the rise in the popularity of grey – which is a calming colour may have something do with the difficult economic conditions we’ve had in recent years.

which can be customized to your requirements. This includes sofas, chairs, benches, stools, ottomans and cubes. Unfortunately space is at a premium but we are able to have a few pieces on show in the new shop.

At Beaumont Interiors, we love grey for its versatility and the fact it works so well with many other colours. Mix it with aubergines and plums for a rich, sophisticated look or, for something brighter and fresher, use it with burnt oranges and lime greens. More recently we have used it in abundance with navys and blues. The walls of London houses are coated in Zoffany’s “Silver”, “Paris Grey” and “Harbour Greys ”or Little Greene’s “French Grey” and Fired Earth’s “Malm” and “Modernist White”. Today grey connotates sophistication and elegance and is no longer seen as drab or depressing.

A good designer will persuade you to step out of your comfort zone and away from the generic look we all go for, to show you colours and designs which are different from the safe colours used by the majority. Colour can affect our mood and can transform surroundings. If you feel timid about the introduction of rich or new colours, these can be brought into a space through accessories, rugs and furniture.

Our services cover the initial concept and architectural design of your home, whether it be a new build or extension, through the middle stages of detailed interior fittings and fixtures to the final phase of decoration and furnishings to complete the look for your finished home. Our associate architect and project managers at HOBAN DESIGN will take you through all the initial stages, with our design expertise alongside.

Interior designers will also show you how to get individuality in the look of your home using current trends. A designer will open your eyes to products and concepts you haven’t thought of before, show you how to use interesting lighting and how to best display accessories in your home. Often the final dressing of a room is as important as the overall schemes you choose.

But how long will our love affair with grey continue? We believe we’re beginning to see a shift away from it and, within the design world, there’s a definite trend towards other colours. Is this a sign of more confidence and hope returning to our economy? If you look at the new season’s fabrics, blue in all its shades (from deep midnight navy, through chalky mid-blues to the palest ice blue) has returned to the world of interiors, along with bronzes, golds and sumptuous shades of spices from the East.

If you’ve never used an interior designer but are looking to refresh your home, even if only in a small way, we would encourage you to give it a try. You might be tempted to step out of our grey world into a whole new world of colour!

We were tempted to use a grey-based theme when we undertook the refurbishment of our shop in Wimbledon village but we felt we should move on and show some of the new tones that are coming in which work with grey. We’d like to invite you to see our newly refurbished shop for inspiration and sit in comfort while viewing the new autumn/winter collections from all the fabric design houses. We also have a new range of bespoke furniture

THE PERFECT SOLUTION TO YOUR SPACE NEEDS

E

stablished in 2008, Estbury Basements have become one of the leading basement companies operating in and around the London area. Their growth and success has largely been down to their specialist knowledge and experience coupled with their personal client approach. The company has, and continues to be built largely on referrals and recommendations from past and present clients.

Estbury Basements was formed initially, when their owners were reconnected through a mutual friend some 6 years ago after not seeing each other for over 15 years. They originally met at school 20 years earlier! Danny had been working in basements the entire time and Richard had a building company that was looking to capitalise on the ever-increasing demand for basements. It made perfect sense to combine their knowledge and expertise. The idea was to create a company that could compete with the largest out there but strip it back, lose the sales staff and big offices and offering the clients a direct and personable approach without compromising on the workmanship and final finish. This meant that they could offer an excellent service for a very competitive price, which very soon propelled them into the company they are today. Still applying those rules as their foundation, Estbury Basements have built up a great team around them, including a full design department consisting of a highly experienced Architect, Engineer and Interior designer, all with proven backgrounds in basement designs.

1 4 6 N OV E M B E R 2 0 1 4

In addition to this they also have a very specialist and knowledgeable site management and personnel team but managing all the while to keep a close-knit team, they have resisted the urge to grow further and risk losing touch with their clients. Estbury Basements are proud of their highly experienced construction team and have a designated fit-out arm for the perfect finish. 2014 has seen the launch of their new division that caters just for waterproofing and specializes in transforming cellars into usable spaces. They can either offer a full bespoke turnkey service taking you through the planning stage, design, construction and fit-out through to hand over or manage each section separately. Either way they are confident they can help you transform your home Danny and Richard have seen a tremendous growth over the past few years in basement requirements due to the increasing cost of properties limiting the options to relocate so the demand for basements has never been greater. Please feel free to call Estbury Basements for a free no obligation consultation. Either Richard or Danny will be at the initial meeting and you will have constant contact with them throughout the whole process for complete piece of mind. LED BY DESIGN CONSTRUCTED FOR LIVING A ONE STOP SHOP FOR RESIDENTIAL REFURBISHMENT

W

hen embarking on a residential design project of any size, it is natural for people to want to spend their time thinking about how their home will be transformed, what it will look like and how it will be used, rather than focusing on potential problems and what their responsibilities will be throughout the project. This article argues the case for appointing a specialist, established design and build company that has the expertise to quite literally design out problems before construction starts, so that the build becomes a fully integrated phase of the total project, and an enjoyable experience from start to finish. Initially, people may show a preference for using personal contacts or a recommended architect and builder. This is the traditional design-tender-build approach, where numerous individual specialists including architects, interior designers, project managers, structural engineers and quantity surveyors, among others are appointed to put together a design package for construction. This route requires a high level of client involvement because all of these individual companies need to be managed and co-ordinated. Talk to people you know about their experiences and

1 5 0 N OV E M B E R 2 0 1 4

they will soon tell you mistakes are not just about cosmetic flaws that are easily corrected, but can be serious problems requiring considerable time and money to put right. As soon as responsibility is divided among individual companies the consequences can be a late running programme with increased costs and frustrations for the client.

this provides a single-point of accountability. Appointing a single entity means a fixed price can be given before work starts and the client has peace of mind that the team has considerable experience of working together in ways that will speed up the completion and guarantee success while minimising client risk.

For these reasons the traditional approach is now considered to be much riskier for the client, than the design and build route described below.

According to Red Square, potential clients find the design and build method preferable, particularly if they have encountered problems previously, using the traditional route. A recent client comments: “I needed a one stop shop for the design, planning and construction and Red Square were there to take care of everything. I enjoyed the collaborative nature of working on the design where they turned our vague ideas into realistic choices. Their attention to detail and their quest for perfection ensured we had a wonderful final product where all our original requests from the brief were somehow incorporated. The follow-up to the whole process has also been very helpful, leaving us very satisfied customers.

Design and build is a more cohesive and dynamic delivery system. Initially used in commercial construction, it is becoming increasingly popular in residential work. Design and build is a method of delivering a project where both the design and the build services are contracted to a single company. Red Square is an example of a firm that has used the design and build route for over fourteen years. Using its own team of interior architects, designers, builders and craftsmen, and by project managing the whole process, Red Square ensures the build is completed to the highest quality standards, on time and within agreed budgets. Because the same team handles the design development, construction and finishing,

FLOORING

GUIDE LONDON’S FINEST FLOORING SPECIALISTS

FLOORING GUIDE

How to choose your floor C hoosing a new floor is very exciting, but also a little bewildering. There are so many types of floor and so many designs, so many things to think about. You probably already have some ideas about the style you would like, but the following easy tips will help you make sure that you get the floor you want and need.

Abandon your preconceptions You may have decided that only wood will do. That laminate is easier to look after. Or that vinyl is more practical. But when you see the extraordinary range of finishes and styles you’ll realise that the possibilities are endless. Flooring now comes with the latest surfacing technology to ensure that they are beautiful to look at, easy to clean and hardwearing. So, put your preconceptions to one side and be prepared to open your mind to new ideas. Budget Measure the room or area to be covered and decide how much you can afford to spend. Make sure that you leave a little extra in your budget for additional items and accessories such as a vapour barrier, acoustic underlay, or mouldings and transport if you want home delivery. Look at the existing surface and decide whether you can lay a floor over it or whether it will have to be resurfaced - if so include that in your budget too. Which sub-floor? Floors can be installed over a variety of different surfaces: Concrete, tiles, stone and marble - vinyl, laminate & wood Wooden floor - vinyl, laminate and wood Very short pile carpet - vinyl, laminate and wood Embossed vinyl - laminate and wood, but must be removed or covered for vinyl Long pile carpet - must be removed for all new floors Which floor for which room? All floors benefit from innovative technology to ensure comfort, looks and the best performance. But different rooms have their own special requirements that you should consider when you make your choice. Entrance and hallway - People coming and going will bring dirt and damp into your home putting special demands 1 5 6 N OV E M B E R 2 0 1 4

on this part of the floor. Choose a hard surface that can stand up to moderate damp and is easy to clean. Living room - Often the centre of the home, you need a multi-purpose floor that reflects your style but can stand up to the challenge of a variety of activities. A tough surface that’s easy to clean and look after will reduce the time you need to spend keeping your living room looking good. Kitchens - Spills and dropped food and equipment are a fact of life however careful you are as a cook. Choose a floor that not only has good stain and traffic resistance, but that will also stand up to light moisture and repeated cleaning. Bathrooms - Water makes the bathroom a challenging environment and you must be careful to select a floor that is waterresistant. In addition, for safety you’ll need to be sure that the floor won’t be slippery when it’s damp and that it will be easy to clean. Bedroom - Your bedroom is often a very personal space so you’ll be looking at a wide range of decorative finishes. Don’t forget that looks are just part of the equation and that you’ll also want to be sure that it’s comfortable and warm for bare feet. Office - If keeping your office quiet for concentration and comfort is a top priority you should consider floors with good acoustic properties. You’ll probably want a tough surface that’s won’t be easily damaged by office furnishings or heavy use, if you expect a lot of visitors. Floors with anti-static properties can be a wise investment if you use a lot of electrical equipment.

Underfloor heating If you already have or are thinking of installing an underfloor heating system, then you must select a floor that meets the manufacturer’s requirements. Self-regulated underfloor heating systems are suitable for most vinyl, laminate floors, wood floors. However, maple and beech floors should never be used with underfloor heating because of their natural structure, which can cause cracks and develops gaps when they dry out too much. You should seek professional advice before making a purchase. Wear and tear No one wants to spend every minute worrying about stains and cleaning. By choosing a floor that suits the area, you’ll cut down on the cleaning and general care you have to provide. You should also select a floor with the best possible surface protection.

FLOORING GUIDE

The splendour of your kitchen

starts from the feet, up!

T

o put on a fantastic floor show, start by looking at the construction of your existing floor and make sure it’s suitable for the type of flooring you’ve got in mind. Heavy materials such as stone or terracotta tiles need a solid concrete base. If you’re laying a floor over wood, go for lighter materials such as lino, vinyl or wooden floorboards. Vinyl flooring Comfortable and warm underfoot, vinyl is one of the most costeffective flooring options and comes in a range of colours and patterns. For a durable surface that won’t fade, choose a vinyl with the colour running through - those with surface patterns tend to develop a patchy look over time. Your supplier can advise you on the correct grade for your kitchen and, if you have the budget, have it installed by a professional, as badly fitting vinyl will peel at the edges. To keep it looking pristine, sweep it regularly and clean with a non-abrasive cleaner. Stone or slate Consult an expert if you’re thinking of using stone or slate on a kitchen floor as its porous nature means it can stain easily. It’s also one of the most expensive floors you can buy, but it will add value to your home. To reduce the risk of staining, go for the less porous slate rather than marble or limestone and make sure you have it professionally sealed. Look at travertine too – a natural stone made in Italy from calcium carbonate. It has a pitted appearance, comes in many colours and stands up to most cleaning products, making it the durable choice. If you have kids and pets running around, natural stone may not be the best option for you.

1 6 2 N OV E M B E R 2 0 1 4

Laminate This is a great, cost-effective option that creates an authentic, real wood plank effect at a fraction of the cost of the real thing. These days, you’ll also find stone and ceramic tile effects too. Laminates are tough so they’re ideal for busy households with lots of traffic in the kitchen. To create the appearance of real wood floorboards, choose a laminate with bevelled edges that form a v shape between the planks when they’re butted up together. Even better, this flooring is designed to be clicked together so there’s no need for messy glue and you can even lay it yourself if you’re a competent DIYer. Hardwood A real hardwood floor is expensive, but will add value to your home. Treat it with a Polyurethane finish to make it easier to maintain and clean. Wipe spills up quickly though, as any water sitting for a length of time on the floor will result in warping. Unlike laminates, if your floor gets damaged, you don’t have to replace the boards – you can simply sand them down and treat them again. Ceramic tiles A popular choice for kitchens as they come in so many colours, textures and patterns allowing you to create your own unique look. You can even use a central colour and create a tiled border all around to frame the floor. Remember though, you need a solid concrete base for tiles as floorboards would shift underneath and cause cracks to form. Ceramic can be cold underfoot so consider installing underfloor heating. Choosing your kitchen flooring is as crucial as choosing the overall theme for your kitchen, so consult a specialist designer for further advice.

FLOORING GUIDE

BATHROOM Choosing the right flooring for your bathroom is a decision that shouldn’t be rushed. Whatever floor you choose will have to withstand humid and wet conditions and plenty of wear and tear. Avoid rot and warping by choosing flooring that is durable and suitable for use in a bathroom.

B

efore you make the leap and choose the floor for you, get a few samples to take home and try out to make sure you’re 100% happy with your decision. Consider design, texture and material when choosing your bathroom flooring, and you can transform a dated space into a stylish room with character. Stone Stone or slate is ideal for creating a natural, sophisticated look, like that of a health spa or luxury hotel. Unless you can afford underfloor heating, these materials can be cold underfoot in the winter, but so long as you have a bathmat to stand on, this need not be much of a problem. Different types of stone you could choose from are limestone, granite, or slate. Limestone is light in colour, making it ideal for smaller rooms. It is porous so needs to be sealed to avoid staining. Slate and granite are both dark in colour and naturally resistant to water. Limestone and slate are available from around £38 per square metre, while slate costs around £50. Rubber flooring Rubber is hardwearing, easy to clean, comfortable underfoot and available in a variety of colours. If you have a modern architectural bathroom suite, rubber is an ideal surface to complement this, creating an industrial, arty look. You can buy textured rubber with studs or other patterns which offers better grip, making it safer for wet feet. Beware of any texture with grooves, though, as this will trap the dirt. Prices start at around £43 per square metre. Vinyl tiles Like rubber, vinyl is hardwearing and very easy to keep clean which is why it is also a popular choice for kitchens. Available in a wide range of colours, patterns and effects, vinyl is a flexible option that can work with any colour scheme. Vinyl floors do not get cold, but they do need to be laid on an even surface. It usually costs between £24 and £40 per square metre. Ceramic tiles Ceramic or porcelain tiles are one of the most flexible options for bathrooms as there is such a great choice of colours and sizes. They are

1 6 4 N OV E M B E R 2 0 1 4

stain resistant and hardwearing but, like stone, they can be cold in winter. Salvaged antique tiles are perfect if you have a period bathroom design with an old-fashioned tub. Prices start from around £20 per square metre, but can be a lot higher for antique or specialist tiles. Lino Surprisingly, linoleum is made almost entirely from natural ingredients wood, flour, pine resin, linseed oil and natural pigment. It is easily cleaned, not cold underfoot and, despite its reputation as being a bit dated, is available in a fantastic range of contemporary designs. You need to ensure that you have a completely flat floor surface and be careful to avoid tearing it. You can buy tiles or sheets and it costs around £20 per square metre. Mosaic Moroccan style is currently extremely popular and there are some great ways to incorporate elements into your bathroom. If you want to go further than a few decorative Moroccan lanterns, try mosaic tiles. Sheets of small mosaic tiles can be bought from most tile stores or you could even use tile fragments to give you more flexibility with the design. Prices start around £24 per square metre for plain mosaic tiles. Is it practical to lay wooden flooring? There’s a lot of conflicting advice about the suitability of real wood flooring in a bathroom. The main thing to consider is the use of the space In a family bathroom, where there’s going to be a lot of splashing and water on the floor, wood might need a lot of maintenance and upkeep. In an en-suite, where it will only be used by careful adults, it will last much longer. If you lay very hard wood, such as teak or iroko, you don’t have to worry so much,’ says Hannah Withington, senior designer at Ripples. ‘These have been used to build ships for centuries and they are the best for a wet environment. I would always advise installing a tanking system before any kind of wood flooring is laid in a bathroom, to create a watertight floor. Protective varnishes are paramount; they don’t just protect from water, but also from any other chemicals that could affect the wood. Alternatively, there are some great porcelain tiles that look like real wood, but don’t need aftercare.’

FLOORING GUIDE

THE IMPORTANCE OF

THE RIGHT FLOORING Developers and interior designers understand the importance of the floor covering in a Domestic or Commercial area. The floor finish is crucial to the success of the room; it might not be as exciting as the latest kitchen gadget or remote controlled lighting but the flooring will have a far greater impact on the overall look and feel of a room than fancy gadgets or the latest technology.

I

nterior designers invest considerable effort into choosing the right flooring solution; one that injects colour and texture but also suits the architectural space, and one that will stand the test of time both physically, by it’s durability, and stylistically by not dating quickly. High street trends can quickly date but choose the right flooring, whether that is contemporary, urban or traditional, and it will have timeless appeal. Natural stone flooring is one such classic look with timeless appeal, whether it is marble, limestone or slate or any of the other myriad natural stone tiles available. Natural stone is, without doubt, beautiful and can be used to create a totally unique floor but it can be difficult and timeconsuming to maintain. Fortunately advances in tile manufacturing technology have meant that porcelain tiles can now offer a great alternative for domestic and commercial use. With not only the look of natural stone and the textures but durability that is hard to match. Responding to demand from the marketplace tile production technology has advanced significantly in recent years with porcelain tiles now available in textured wood effect as well as natural stone, metallic and leather effect finishes, all with the durability of porcelain. The subtle tonal variations and textures in porcelain tiles has encapsulated the naturally occurring variations of stone but the use of porcelain enables complete design flexibility because it can be used as both an interior and exterior tiling material and comes in large sizes (up to 1.2m square) which would not be practical with natural stone. Traditional stone and traditional materials are the source of inspiration but modern tile manufacturing processes have reinterpreted the natural product to be more suitable for the modern home and commercial installations.

1 6 6 N OV E M B E R 2 0 1 4

But porcelain floor tiles are not only available in natural effects – they are available in a range of finishes, colours and sizes from extra-large 1.2mt x 1.2mt to standard smaller sizes and high gloss white tiles through pretty much any colour and finish you can think of including muted shades and strong colour palettes. You can view a wide range of porcelain tiles at the Décor Tiles & Floors showroom in Watford. They hold extensive stocks of high quality porcelain tiles from over 40 top European brands such as Aparici, Casalgrande Padana, and Gardenia Orchidea, as well as designer tiles from Versace and Philippe Starck. Décor Tiles & Floors have developed close business relationships with the leading tile manufacturers across Europe over many years since the company was first established in 1976. Many of these manufacturers have embraced the principles of sustainability in order to preserve our environment, making the choice of porcelain tiles an eco-friendly one. And if you remain convinced that only a natural product would be right for you, then Décor also stock natural stone wall and floor tiles and a wide range of real wood flooring. Décor have many years of experience working with architects, interior designers and developers; their products can be found in high-end luxury homes throughout the UK. So if you need help finding the right flooring for any project whether it is a small residential project or a large commercial project simply call on 01923 248531 or take a look at their website www.decortiles.co.uk.

Make an entrance! How to create a welcoming hallway The hallway is the first room guests see in a house. Make yours warm and welcoming with our inspirational design tips and advice…

E

ntrance ways tend to be dark and narrow but painting them white isn’t necessarily the best option. “Hallways, especially busy family ones, can take a lot of wear of tear and white be very unforgiving, as well as cold, so a better option, is to choose a light, bright colour in a warm tone. Choose a colour that is a shade or two lighter than the main room the hallway leads to, and it will help create continuity between the two spaces. As this room is primarily a walk-through, you can afford to make a strong design statement and be bold with colour and pattern. Patterned wallpaper with a slight shine will help reflect the light, while vertical stripes can create the illusion of height. If you’re concerned about knocks and scratches, a practical option is to have painted wood panelling on the bottom of the wall, with statement wallpaper above. Feature flooring Flooring in a hallway needs to be durable but choose wisely and you can create impact while being practical too. If you have a particularly long and narrow hallway, a chequerboard effect on the floor will create the impression of width - the wider the tiles, the wider it will look. Hallway runners are a great way to inject colour, while colourful striped carpet will instantly enliven a stairway. If you have bare wooden stairs, consider painting each step a different shade of the same colour or have fun with stencils to create patterns or words. Let the light in Hallways can often be dark, so getting the lighting right is essential. If you

1 6 8 N OV E M B E R 2 0 1 4

have a high ceiling, a large pendant light will act as a beautiful centrepiece and be the first thing that people see when they enter your home. If the ceiling is low, pendant lights will have the effect of making the room feel smaller, so wall lights are the better option. Mirrors are a good way to reflect natural light and give the illusion of more space. A large mirror placed at the end of a hallway instantly provides depth, making a hallway feel larger. Storage solutions Hallways can easily become cluttered so finding a space for coats, keys and shoes is a must. A wooden bench with storage If you have room, offers storage as well as a useful seating area. The more floor space you can see, the larger your hallway will seem and there are lots of great wall-hung cupboards available. Make a feature Hallways may be small but that doesn’t mean you can’t create a stunning focal point. A narrow console table with a pair of lamps and mirror above makes a pretty focal point - while a vase of fresh flowers or a scented cinnamon candle will create an inviting aroma. A group of family portraits is another great way to add interest and personalise the space. Generally, it’s best to hang fewer, larger pictures as opposed to several smaller ones, as it can make the space seem more confined and cluttered. With a little imagination and the right colours, storage and lighting, you can create an inviting entrance you’ll love coming home to and will want to show off.

FLOORING GUIDE

Choosing the Right Rug You have decided that you want to buy a rug - but do you know what sort of rug will work best for you and the environment in which it will be placed? Or maybe you know the sort of rug that you would like but having difficulty choosing a design? The following is a practical guide to help you when choosing a rug. Space and Environment These are key issues when it comes to choosing a rug, think about the space that it will be in and the effect that the design you have chosen will have on that space. Rugs can either open a space up or make a space seem a lot cosier. Depending on the atmosphere, look and feel that you wish to create, there are several key elements to take into account. If you want to create the feeling of space then light colours and simple patterns can achieve this, however if you are looking to make a space cosier then rugs that have darker colours and more ornate or dense patterns tend to work better. Most traditional rugs will lend themselves well to this job with their ornate dense patterns however there are also many modern rugs that will effectively make a space cosier. Size Believe it or not size is one of the most fundamental decisions to make when it comes to choosing your rug. The wrong size can make a room look cluttered or far too small. Rugs tend to come in standard sizes: Smaller rugs measure three feet by five feet (90cm x 150cm) up to approximately four feet by six feet (120cm x 180cm) Medium rugs measuring up to approximately eight feet by five feet (240cm x 150cm) Large rugs measuring up to approximately eleven feet (330cm) with anything larger classified as Extra Large.

Many rugs can be custom made, this is more expensive and can take a long time but the results can be amazing and in the end provide you with a rug that is the perfect size for the area required. Where is Your Room’s Main Focal Point? Furniture, Fireplace or Rug? Discover the focal point of your room before choosing a rug. Rugs can draw attention to certain areas of a room, compliment existing areas or even become a focal point themselves. For instance, if the furniture and surrounding décor is to be a focal point, then it’s best to choose a rug that is more subtle and subdued with little or no pattern or that compliments the colour of existing furniture. If the focal point of a room is a fireplace, then a subdued all-over pattern or a plain rug that compliments the surroundings is best. If the rug is to be the focal point of the room, choose a rug that is quite busy, bright or bold in design/colour, thus attracting attention to it and drawing attention away from the furniture and surrounding décor. 1 7 0 N OV E M B E R 2 0 1 4

Style, Texture and Colour A rug can really transform a room. Whatever your rug is for, the thing to remember is that it should always compliment the style and colour scheme of your room. In terms of colour, it is advised in general to match up a particular favourite colour in the room for example match the colour of your walls or your curtains. If you place a rug in a strategic area of a room that matches a certain wall or ceiling colour it can really set off a room and make your design come together. Textured rugs can add a certain depth to an otherwise flat room. Many shaggy and textured rugs can create depth where smooth walls meet smooth laminate floors. They can break up the monotony of smoothness in a room, adding depth and interest, giving your room body as well as form. Most wool rugs that are new will shed for a while because of the loose fibres, however, some wool rugs have been known to shed for months and even longer. If a rug that doesn’t shed is a huge factor then we would recommend that you do not choose wool. Saying that, Wool is far more resilient, more durable than synthetic man-made fibres and responds better to coloured dyes, i.e. it absorbs and maintains dyes better. Therefore you can often get a wool rug that is years old and still looks as good as new whereas its synthetic counterpart can look old and slightly faded. Wool is also naturally resistant to water, fire and stains as well as being resistant to dust mites. This is a great positive for anybody that has allergies. Wool is far more expensive than acrylic/man-made fibres due to its authenticity and durability. There really isn’t too much difference in the look and feel of some synthetic rugs these days. In fact synthetic fibres are that well-made now that we sometimes have to really look closely at acrylic to be able to tell that it isn’t wool. Wool is, and probably will remain, the most popular choice for a rug due to its traditional heritage and natural existence in a mostly man made world. If you are going to be putting your rug in an area that receives a high amount of traffic we would have to recommend wool due to its durability and natural resistance to stains. There is no exact science to choosing a rug and we all have different tastes and ideas about what will and won’t work in a room. We hope that you have found the information interesting and that it helps you narrow down the overwhelming choice of rug that you choose.

FLOORING GUIDE

EXPLORING THE BENEFITS OF

UNDERFLOOR HEATING High comfort levels, together with low running cost and environmental benefits, have resulted in a growing demand for underfloor heating systems.

U

nderfloor heating is the most comfortable form of heating because it is largely radiant, and people have evolved physiologically to prefer this form of heating. It is completely unobtrusive, and some people estimate that this gives an average of 15% more usable space in a room. It is completely safe and more hygienic than radiators. And it is more energy efficient.

Radiant energy from the floor is absorbed by the other surfaces in a room, which warm up and become secondary radiant emitters. We become surrounded by gently radiating surfaces, which is very comfortable. There are no floor draughts and the temperature in all parts of the room is even. Convective forms of heating, such as radiators, use the air in a room as the transport mechanism to move energy into the whole room from a small surface that must be very hot compared with the room air. The hottest air is at ceiling level and the coldest is at floor level. The air can become dry and cause dry eyes and stuffy noses. Convection circulation can also pick up dust from the floor and put it into the air we breathe. Energy efficiency Most new buildings can be kept warm with heating power in the range 35 to 75W/m2, which can be achieved with floor-surface temperatures of just 24 to 27°C. The maximum floor temperature should not normally exceed 29°C, although up to 34°C is acceptable for bathrooms. An underfloor heating system uses water at a much lower temperature than that required by radiators, making it ideal to be fuelled by alternative energy sources such as solar or geothermal energy. Depending on the conductivity of the floor, the water needs to be between 40 and 60°C to reach the design floor temperature. By contrast, radiators generally require the water to be at 70 to 80°C. When designing an underfloor heating system to heat an entire building, some modern boilers can supply the water at the low temperature required directly to the heating system. The internal pump of such a boiler can be used to circulate the water around the pipe circuits. Floor types If the boiler cannot supply the water at the required temperature, it is necessary to add a water-mixing control unit to reduce the water temperature before it enters the underfloor heating system. 1 7 2 N OV E M B E R 2 0 1 4

There are forms of underfloor heating to fit every type of floor construction (screeds, fully floating timber floors, battened and joisted floors), as well as floor constructions that incorporate acoustic components required to comply with Part E of the Building Regulations. Screed Before the screed is laid, edge insulation should be set all-round the periphery of the room to allow for thermal movement in the screed during the year. The heating pipe is fixed to the top of the insulation, just before the screed is laid. The pipe should generally be set at 200 mm spacing. This is close enough to guarantee best heating performance and minimises the length of pipe needed. The pipe can be stapled to firm insulation and fixed with screw clips to soft insulation. Another option is system plates. These vacuum-formed plastic panels have moulded pipe grippers to hold the pipe securely and at regular spacing. Timber floors (floating) Panels of insulation are used to support a timber floor deck. This is normally formed from tongued-and-grooved panels of chipboard or plywood. Floating-floor panels with pre-cut pipe channels and factoryfitted aluminium heat diffusers are available to be used instead of plain insulation panels to support a fully floating deck. These purpose-build panels have a higher conductivity and help minimise downward heat loss. Timber battens, joists and I-beams Battens are used where the floor loadings are to be higher than can be supported by a fully floating floor or where the floor deck is to be formed from planks to be nailed down to a support. Softwood joists are commonly used in intermediate floors, although manufactured I-beams are often used because they can be stronger and are more stable dimensionally. Pre-fabricated batten/joist panels are available from Wavin to fit between battens and automatically space these at nominal 400/600 mm centres or to be fitted between softwood joists. Underfloor heating is easy to install. The mechanism for fixing pipe or heating cable into the floor is simple. If it is planned to design and install a small area of underfloor heating, underfloor heating products available through merchants are easy to use. If the project is larger, it is better to seek the help of a professional underfloor heating supplier.
