Her television career has spanned more than 4 decades, and she has written over 40 best-selling cookery books. Her newest book, Mary Berry Cooks the Perfect is set to be released in September and she will be demonstrating recipes from the book at the BBC Good Food Shows. Writer, restaurateur, and TV personality, John Torode is credited as one of the main players in introducing Australasian food to the UK in the mid-1990s. The hugely popular and influential figure on the UK culinary circuit is best known as the straight-talking co-host and judge of BBC1’s MasterChef franchise, and his recent UKTV series John Torode’s Australia was a huge hit.

The brilliantly popular BBC2 series Proper Pub Food became a huge overnight success when it transmitted in September 2013 and his first book of the same title fast became a best seller.

In the Producer’s Village visitors will discover a wonderful range of speciality food and artisan produce that isn’t available on your supermarket shelf. 1ST-22ND NOVEMBER 2014 ST JOHN’S DOWNSHIRE HILL AND BURGH HOUSE

HAMPSTEAD ARTS FESTIVAL 2014

‘Handpicked, exquisite, special’

Appearing in the Evening Standard’s top 10 ‘best London opera and classical concerts 2013’, the Hampstead Arts Festival returns this year with another programme of highly imaginative, cohesive and unique concerts and talks. Our 2014 programme was planned with the same guiding principles as last year’s: each event should be beautiful, interesting and unique in London that season. Hampstead is a special corner of the city, but it’s also not far from the likes of Wigmore and the Southbank. We want our presentations to be competitive with the best on offer in London, and to attract both local North Londoners and people from further afield.” Eric Usadi, HAF Music Director HAF 2014’s concerts are held together by a few unifying themes. Half of the concerts are of Baroque music. British cellist extraordinaire Natalie Clein will be making her personal debut playing all of Bach’s six cello suites over two concerts. Piano superstar Angela Hewitt will lecture on, and perform, Bach’s complete Art of Fugue. And Mahan Esfahani, perhaps today’s most exciting and eloquent harpsichordist, will be launching his recording on Hyperion of the complete works of Rameau with a lecture-recital. Following the popularity of last year’s jazz concert, two concerts will be copresentations with the EFG London Jazz Festival. Mercury Prize finalist pianist Gwilym Simcock will team up (for the first time) with veteran guitar virtuoso John Etheridge, and there will be an acoustic quartet of sparkling up-and-comers led by trumpeter Freddie Gavita, whose luscious playing can be heard on Jeremy Sans’s score for the recent movie Le Weekend. The quartet also includes pianist Tom Cawley, bassist Calum Gourlay and drummer James Maddren. Simcock and Etheridge will also be leading the educational branch of HAF this year, holding a masterclass with young musicians in association with local Wac Arts charity which strives to help ‘gifted young people facing exceptional challenges to discover their talents and fulfill their potential’. Many of the musicians taking part come from disadvantaged 1 8 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 4

backgrounds and are considering a career in music. And finally, two concerts will feature Romantic and 20th-century music. The wonderful Prague-based Wihan String Quartet will be featured courtesy of the Cavatina Chamber Music Trust. And tenor Ben Johnson, who won the Audience Prize at the 2013 BBC Cardiff Singer of the World competition, will be joined by pianist Sebastian Wybrew, whom festival goers may remember from last year’s breath-taking recital by soprano Sophie Bevan. The ‘words’ side of the festival, led by Piers Plowright, will focus on politics and the arts. Guardian editor Michael Berkeley will be who will talk to Piers about HIS private passions. BBC master presenters Peter Stanford and Melvyn Bragg will be discussing, respectively, recent changes in the Catholic Church and the Radio 4 series In Our Time. Journalist Yasmin Alibhai-Brown will be talking about immigration and multiculturalism, and finally, a dose of pure arts, HAF will celebrate Dylan Thomas’s centenary with a discussion and readings led by James Roose-Evans, founder of the Hampstead Theatre. All events this year are concentrated into a three-week period in November ‘to lift the spirits between the lawn festivals of summer and the carols of winter’, says Usadi. After the success of last year’s festival – where Eric Usadi’s programming was hailed as a national success – London, national and international audiences have an enormous amount to look forward to this year. As Michael White, Telegraph, said; the concerts are ‘hand-picked, exquisite, special’. For details of concert dates and further visitor information, please visit www.hampsteadartsfestival.com

War & Peace

8th-23th Novem be 2014 r

at the Wimbledon International Music Festival 2014

W

imbledon International Music Festival 2014 has unveiled a highly thoughtful, creative and expansive programme for this year’s festival. Focusing on the theme of ‘War and Peace’, festival director Anthony Wilkinson has formed imaginative collaborations and partnerships once again, creating unique events and providing a platform for brilliant new generation artists. This year is Wimbledon’s most expansive year with a number of world class artists performing, including the much celebrated Borodin Quartet with Michael Collins, The Sixteen, The Philharmonia, Lawrence Power and The Katona Twins. Wimbledon’s concerts will also take place in venues such as St. John’s Church, Spencer Hill and Wimbledon Synagogue, venues with great acoustics that are definitely worth travelling to. A particular highlight is also the The Schubertiade - two concerts of Schubert with The Fibonacci Sequence with the option of a Viennese Dinner during the interval. A special Baroque menu will be served at the Light House Restaurant in Ridgway, a short walk from St John’s Church via Denmark Road. The War and Peace theme does not only serve to commemorate the centenary of WW1, as 2 0 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 4

the brilliant guitar duo The Katona Twins will bring a programme of Spanish music interwoven with the poems and prose of famous international writers who responded to the Spanish Civil War. The Philharmonia Orchestra will also perform Richard Strauss’s masterpiece ‘Metamorphosen’, composed in the final days of WW2. Wimbledon also has a reputation for imaginative new productions and this year will include a full length production of The Soldier’s Tale, with costumes by Wimbledon College of Art. This will also include dancers and narrators and will be performed by members of The Philharmonia Orchestra and conducted by Robin O’Neill. Wimbledon has also extended its jazz series this year in association with Maggie Black Jazz Promotions, and the unusual duo of Zhenya Strigalev and Liam Noble will be performing, as well as The Paris Washboard Band (traditional jazz) and the Marc Laferriere Quintet (New Orleans Jazz). Wimbledon has received funding from the Arts Council for this new jazz series. The Wimbledon International Music Festival is supported using public funding by Arts Council England. www.wimbledonmusicfestival.co.uk

REGENT STREET

REVS UP FOR MOTOR SHOW The UK’s largest free-to-view motoring extravaganza

London’s Regent Street will be packed with cars and motorbikes... but, for once however, they will all be on public display rather than bumper-to-bumper en-route to their next destination. From Piccadilly Circus to Oxford Circus, the capital’s world-famous shopping street will be closed to through traffic so it can, once again, host the annual Regent Street Motor Show. Last year, a record 400,000 visitors were able to pore over a huge variety of mouth-watering machinery embracing everything from motoring’s pioneers to the latest supercars. This year, there will be hundreds of cars on display in the middle of the temporarily traffic free street including performance cars, family cars, eco cars and racing cars. There will also be 100 veteran cars on display, all ready for the annual Bonhams London to Brighton Veteran Car Run, which starts from nearby Hyde Park the next day. The veterans, all built before 1905, will be taking part in the prestigious EFG International Concours d’Elegance and hoping to take overall honours ahead of the 60-mile trial to the coast. First held in 2005, the Regent Street Motor Show attracts a large number of manufacturers keen to display their newest products to an audience made up of enthusiasts and non-enthusiasts alike. “The Regent Street Motor Show is now recognised as a great day out for the family, whether they are car enthusiasts or just shoppers” said Annie Walker, Director of the Regent Street Association. “The huge variety of exhibits perfectly complements Regent Street, with an array of vehicles ranging from the horseless carriages to the cars of today all set in one of the world’s most prominent shopping streets. It adds a completely new dimension to a visit to the best shopping street in the West End. And best of all, it’s free!” For more details visit www.regentstreetmotorshow.com 2 2 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 4

ROYAL ROUTE

NOVEMBER

2014

FOR 2014 BONHAMS VETERAN CAR RUN

For only the second time in more than half a century, hundreds of veteran cars will start this year’s annual 60-mile adventure from London to Brighton by driving down The Mall, London’s ‘Red Carpet Drive.’

A

lthough a regular part of the route in earlier years, The Mall has only been used once since 1962 – that was in 1996 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the original Emancipation Run.

This year the pioneering horseless carriages, all built before 1905, will leave Hyde Park as normal before passing under Wellington Arch and heading down Constitution Hill towards Buckingham Palace. After rounding the Victoria Memorial in front of the Palace, the cars will drive along The Mall’s red asphalt before turning right into Horse Guards Road and then left towards Parliament Square, Big Ben and Westminster Bridge. A total of 442 entries – up from 389 in 2013 – have been received by the Royal Automobile Club for the 2014 Bonhams London to Brighton Veteran Car Run. As tradition dictates it takes place, come rain or shine, on the first Sunday of November (2 November), with the first cars leaving at sunrise, this year 06:56. The oldest car on the event is a c.1888 Truchutet, a 4hp open tonneau. The entry list includes some of pioneering motoring most famous names, such as Benz, Daimler, Vauxhall, Peugeot and Renault, while the entries includes steam-powered cars, electric cars, three-wheelers as well as petrol-powered four-wheelers.

2 4 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 4

Regarded as the world’s longest running motoring event, the Run celebrates the original ‘capital-to-coast’ Emancipation Run. This was held on 14 November 1896, and marked the Locomotives on the Highway Act, which raised the speed limit for ‘light locomotives’ from 4 to 14mph and abolished the need for these vehicles to be preceded by a man on foot waving a red flag. The first re-enactment of the Emancipation Run took place in 1927 and it has been held every year since, barring the war years and 1947 when petrol was rationed. Although famously not a race, there is a competitive element to this year’s Run with a Regularity Time Trial during the event. Participants will try to match their nominated ‘bogey’ time set for a 13-mile section between Crawley and Burgess Hill. The entire event is free to view for spectators, who line the whole length of the route to cheer on the hardy ‘automobilists’. The Run is the highlight of a long weekend of motoring nostalgia in the capital, much of it free to view. Other events include the popular free Regent Street Motor Show (Saturday 1st November) and the annual Bonhams Veteran Car auction (Friday 31st October). For more details of the Bonhams Veteran Car Run, the entries and the route visit www.veterancarrun.com

Celebrates 15 Year Anniversary

T

his October sees the Affordable Art Fair return to Battersea to celebrate its 15th anniversary. Now with 18 fairs in 14 cities across four continents, the Affordable Art Fair is proud to be bringing its unique vision of ‘art for everyone’ to Battersea Park, the place where the dream of democratising art began. Art lovers, art connoisseurs, and art novices alike are invited to discover an array of unique and stunning art all priced affordably between £100 - £5,000.

Celebrating 15 Years The popularity of the event has given both up and coming and established artists a platform to showcase their work to a wide audience. Founder of Affordable Art Fair Will Ramsay reflects; “I never believed 15 years ago that 1.6million people would have visited our fairs, buying 200,000 pieces of art around the world. The fair makes it easy to engage with art, to learn; we make art fun! Enjoy yourself and get involved in all we have to offer.”

15 Years Of Art For Everyone The Affordable Art Fair could not be a better platform for art-lovers and collectors to take a leap towards owning something really special. Situated in London’s Battersea Park beside the Thames, the Affordable Art Fair is a friendly and welcoming space to visit, an antidote to busy city life – making for a truly wonderful day out for the whole family. Children and adults 2 6 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 4

alike can take part in arty activities on a Carnival theme, from creating exotic birds out of sequins and feathers to making Carmen Miranda inspired sculptural hats! Younger children can also enjoy playing in the free crèche while parents browse, and there will be exciting and brightly coloured kids packs filled with arty activities for your own carnival party. This autumn, visitors can snap up pieces from well-known artists such as Anish Kapoor, Damien Hirst, and Marc Quinn. There is also the opportunity to see works from exciting emerging artists such as Kwak Seung-Yong showing with first time exhibitor Galerie GAIA from Korea and home-grown rising stars at the Recent Graduates’ Exhibition. As well as art made from traditional materials, the fair also showcases artists working with more contemporary methods, such as the Perspex sculptures of Douglas Jeal at Adam Gallery. Each piece of art is available to buy and take home the very same day making the fair perfect for those looking for a unique one-off purchase as well as more seasoned collectors looking to expand their existing collection. London Design Guide 2014/2015 Edition

edited by Max Fraser

London’s only comprehensive design guide returns with new content and contributors in this totally updated and rewritten third edition.

F

or fans of contemporary and vintage design and those looking to access it, London Design Guide gives a fresh insight into the city’s design retailers, galleries, museums and bookshops.

More than 150 new and established hotspots are compiled and reviewed, providing a tantalising viewpoint of the design capital of the world. Each entry is categorised by neighbourhood and accompanied by detailed maps to help navigate the best that the city has to offer. In each of the ten neighbourhood chapters, we’ve honed in on streets that demonstrate a healthy mix of independent shops and services and asked selected business owners to comment on their evolution and attributes, with contributors including Stephen Webster, Ally Capellino, Sam & Sam Clarke and Michael Anastassiades. Furthermore, restaurant, bar and café recommendations are featured for each area, selected as much for their design credentials as for the quality of food and service. Every edition of London Design Guide includes themed essays from

a variety of design experts and commentators. In this edition, we’ve examined the state of retail during a period when shops are undoubtedly struggling with a weak economy, tapered footfall, highrents and the great might of internet shopping. We ask retailers and analysts, including Sheridan Coakley (scp), Simon Alderson (twentytwentyone), Lina Kanafani (Mint) and Magnus Englund (Skandium), what’s the future trajectory of bricks-and-mortar shops? The 208-page London Design Guide is a snapshot of the design scene today, a celebration of creativity and a practical tool for Londoners and tourists alike. There’s no better incentive for exploring the wealth of design in the capital. About the editor... Max Fraser is a design commentator and author whose work broadens the conversation around contemporary design. Fraser is the founder of Spotlight Press, an independent imprint that publishes London Design Guide and other titles. He also works as the Deputy Director of the annual London Design Festival. The 208 page guide is launched on 12th September 2013, at a retail price of £12.

African Art Fair 1:54

, Europe’s leading international fair dedicated to contemporary African art, returns with an extensive programme following a hugely successful inaugural year. This year, the fair will embrace both the East and West Wings of Somerset House, and will once again provide an unparalleled showcase of the world’s finest Contemporary African Art. Spanning several generations and diverse artistic practices, 1:54 will showcase work from 27 selected galleries from territories such as Kenya, South Africa, France, Italy, Germany, UK and USA; presenting over 100 artists. 1:54 will feature a host of leading organisations from the global art scene who will gather in London to reveal a cross-sectional-insight into art from the continent. Taking place during Frieze Week, the new fair builds upon the burgeoning popularity of contemporary African art and presents a rare opportunity to explore the rapidly emerging African art market in an environment supported by some of the most influential people and organisations in the art world. With mediums spanning painting, sculpture, photography and installation the fair will present visual art in its many dynamic forms. This year, the fair is being exclusively redesigned in collaboration with award-winning architecture and design studio, RA Projects, established in 2009 by architect Rashid Ali. RA Projects has been widely recognised for their building projects as well as research activities, including being shortlisted for the prestigious Young Architect of the Year Award in 2008 and 2011.

Following the huge success of last year’s over-subscribed educational programme, 1:54 will be accompanied by a critical conversations series curated by Koyo Kouoh (Director, Raw Material Company in Dakar). The extensive programme will once again aim to stimulate discussion and debate with some of the art world’s most inspirational thinkers. The programme will comprise lectures, artist talks, film screenings and panel discussions presented by international curators, artists and leading experts in the field. Discussion topics will include the current trajectory of contemporary African art production and practice in a global context, and explore modes of existing, retrospective and theoretical artistic practice. Full details to be announced soon. Touria El Glaoui, Founder of 1:54 says: “The response to 1:54 has been incredible and it gives me great pleasure to increase the magnitude of the fair this year. With continued support from so many individuals and organisations, this year’s fair is set to be even more influential in encouraging the growth of contemporary African art in the international market place. 1:54 offers visitors the chance to experience and engage with contemporary art by both established African artists and with the rising talent from across the continent and the African Diaspora. This year we are expanding the fair to feature a wider range of artists - each of the highest calibre - we aim to act as a catalyst for generating momentum in this exciting emerging market.” For more details visit www.1-54.com 154artfair 154ContemporaryAfricanArtFair

Who, at some point in their lives, hasn’t desired

...their own island? The Osros floating Island is designed to offer the billionaire super-yacht lifestyle, for mere millionaire money. t’s hard to give a name to this unique structure — is it a boat or an island? The Osros floating island was designed as a way to have the best of both worlds. It is over 20 metres wide and more than 37 metres in length, and with about 400 m² on three floors, the Island offers up to 1,000 m² of living space. It boasts six luxury double bedrooms, with space for 12 residents and accommodation for up to four staff members. Buyers can tailor the interior and design to their individual needs. The sun deck area features sun roof loungers, a BBQ area, Jacuzzi, and a bar with seating for up to 15 people. There is storage for water sports and diving equipment and a mooring for motor boats along with a handy hatch for loading and unloading of provisions. The main deck hosts a spacious living room and lounge with exotic aquarium, regulated lighting and air supply.

But let’s get into the details; they’ll have your mouth-watering in no time… Hungry guests can also take advantage of a small kitchenette with a bar and restaurant area with option to expand the space by opening the doors to the adjoining terrace. 4 4 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 4

Six 20m² state rooms, with en-suite bathrooms, are accessible through the living room, half a level lower, and boast large windows that afford a panoramic view of the surrounding area. There is what the manufacturers describe as an ‘autonomous power supply based energy system’ powered, both day and night, by a noiseless wind energy system, as well as more than 120 m2 of solar panels making the most use of daylight. Heat recovery from sea water is the basis for heating and air conditioning. Previous floating island designs have come with price tags in excess of US$100 million, but Orsos Island creator Gábor Orsós aims to combine the positive aspects of mainland real estate and luxury yachts at much reduced cost, albeit in comparison to superyachts. He explains: ‘In the beginning, my goal was to create an exclusive, high-quality hotel chain based on floating platforms. With the progress of the project it became clear that the attractive and unusual concept of Orsos Islands should not be limited to only a selected group of people.’Orsos Islands should reach a much broader audience, people with an awareness of modern life and a feeling of responsibility towards the environment.’ For more information about Orsos visit the website at orsosisland.com

Simone Rocha Simone Rocha took inspiration from quaint ‘50s housewives and gave them an edgy spin for SS15, resulting in a cool-girl’s guide to doing demure... Rocha has developed a signature style of full skirts, sheer fabric and asymmetric cuts. She didn’t stray too far from that, but this collection still felt fresh and new. In parts, there was something of the 1950s saucy housewife about it, with headscarves, fluffy mules, nightdresses and even sheer trench coats. Other looks were classic Rocha; sheer dresses with bold, floral applique designs in black, white or red. Footwear is always a highlight with Simone Rocha, too. She’s a fan of a chunky lace-up, often with the focus on a perspex or jewelled low heel. Next season we’re looking forward to her Derby lace-ups and Mary Janes. The new Rocha spin? A kitten heel. joy of an English country garden on a summer’s day. Floral prettiness is tempered by the ‘can do, can dig’ gardeners’ attire with practical pockets and utilitarian shapes. Laser-cut leather and substantial sandals contradict the delicacy of the intricate prints. The Mulberry Girl may be wearing the finest silk, but she remains cool, contemporary, and ready to enjoy herself whatever the English spring weather throws at her...

SORAPOL

Perennial English flowers, hand-sketched in the famous gardens of Kew, Sissinghurst and Great Dixter, inspire the new season prints. The delphinium appears as a grand monochromatic design on printed silk and lace. For an intricately woven jacquard this pretty floral is also contrasted with the uniformity of garden trellis. The colour palette works with White and Cream accented with Black and earthy Khaki, while rich Delphinium Blue offers a pop of colour. In true Mulberry style, prettiness is presented with an edge: dresses and skirts are paired with contemporary leather pieces, some with laser-cut perforations, and luxurious but casual lurex wool cardigans. Sleeves rolled up, our Mulberry girl’s style is inspired by the eccentricities of the English lady gardener. Skirts and pinafores with practical pockets nod to a gardener working in an idyllic country garden but ready for anything, tools in hand, unafraid of a bit of mud! The Mulberry Girl is wearing sandals inspired by classic gardening clogs. These practical and charming shoes are given a beautiful and fashion-forward makeover for this season’s Gardening Sandals, with soles carved from solid wood and criss-crossed leather straps. Natural Vachetta Leather is favoured for its natural and rustic finish; the perfect complement to the lavish prints and fabrics in the collection. Of course, no English country look can be complete without a Wellie, but this is no ordinary rubber boot. The upper of the new Mulberry Garden Wellie features the wild flower design, woven into a rich metallic jacquard.

Sophia Webster “Jungle is massive” For Spring/Summer 15, Sophia Webster played on different interpretations of ‘Jungle’. Finding basis in Henri Rousseau’s fantasy jungle world paintings and Henri Matisse’s whimsical leaf cut outs, Sophia metamorphoses leopard print, jungle flowers and plants with her own signature use of colour and print. Acid and techno colour palettes, coupled with Sophia’s own love of heavy rhythms and underground music, led her to invoke the hedonistic world of a 90s jungle rave. The collection is inspired by rave-wear: feminine clubcolour camo prints, fruity colours mixed with Aztec prints, girly-warrior embellishments and graffiti tags adorn caged booties, platforms and knee-padded thigh-high boots as well as speech bubble bags and fruity backpacks. Poppies by the Tower

‘Blood swept lands and seas of red’ Don’t miss the major art installation Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red at the Tower of London. By 11th November, 888,246 ceramic poppies will have been planted in the dry moat at the Tower of London, marking one hundred years since the first full day of Britain’s involvement in the First World War. This is an evolving artistic installation as a collaboration with ceramic artist Paul Cummins and theatre stage designer Tom Piper. The poppies are being planted by a team of volunteers. The last one will be planted on 11th November 2014.

Each poppy represents a British military man or woman who died during the First World War. The ceramic poppies are available to purchase for £25 each (plus post & packing), proceeds from which will go to six Service charities: The Royal British Legion, Confederation of Service Charities (COBSEO), Combat Stress, Coming Home, Help for Heroes and SSAFA (formerly the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association). Also, you can nominate a name to be read out at the daily playing of Last Post.

See the website for information about the installation, how to buy a poppy and how to nominate a name to be read out at Last Post. The poppies encircle the iconic landmark, creating not only a spectacular display visible from all around the Tower but also a location for personal reflection. The scale of the installation intends to reflect the magnitude of such an important centenary creating a powerful visual commemoration, whilst raising millions of pounds which will be shared equally amongst the six service charities.

Health & Safety

During Swimming Classes More so than any other swim school, at SwimWay we make health and safety a major priority in the way we run the company and our lessons. When dealing with swimming lessons for all ages and abilities it is extremely important to put safety first, and we do exactly that.

A

lthough it would be more cost effective for our company to run lessons with larger groups of children, health and safety and quality of lessons is so important to us, that we keep all our lessons as private or semi-private. This allows our instructors to focus fully on each child’s safety and needs within the lessons. Legal requirements dictate that instructors undergo CPR and other emergency training only once every two years. We recognised that this is incredibly insufficient. Thus we run a first aid course at the beginning of every term. That comes to three times a year instead of once every two years. We have also brought into the SwimWay team a specialised health and safety consultant – David Perry. With over 15 years’ experience in the industry, working with leisure centres and private swimming schools, as well as the STA (one of the UK governing swimming teaching bodies). David Perry brings a professional eye and mind to the health and safety concerns of our swim school.

David routinely runs the Termly first aid courses. He makes regular monthly pool visits to ensure our sites are up to spec. He also meets with the site owners and SwimWay management to discuss and resolve potential issues. He is our eyes and ears for the health and safety awareness of the company, keeping us on the forefront

6 2 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 4

of your children’s, and your own safety during our lessons. Please see the website for more information on David’s role as our Health and Safety Consultant. SwimWay is the leading home visit Swimming School in London, providing swimming lessons to babies and adults in exclusive private developments, homes, schools and gyms around London, as well as 7 sites open to general public located in Putney, Knightsbridge, Kew Gardens, Streatham Hill, Wimbledon/ Southfields, Bloomsbury and East Sheen. In the comfort of an exclusive venue, SwimWay will be providing half hour semi-private lessons and private lessons only without using any floatation aid except than a kicking board. These small classes ensure a more personal lesson, with more individual attention for each student in the class. SwimWay will open bookings for the Spring Term 2015 (January to March) to new clients on 12th November 2014, once the priority booking period for existing clients ends. For further information please email info@swimway.co.uk, call the SwimWay office on 0208 871 3972, or visit our website at www.swimway.co.uk

WIN a Micro Scooter for the whole family this Christmas

T

o encourage families to get scooting this Christmas and spend some quality time together, as well as work off some of those mince pies, Micro Scooters are giving away two adult scooters and two children’s scooters to one lucky reader! The winner can choose two adult scooters – up to the value of £160 each – and pick from a 3-in-1, Mini or Maxi Micro for two children. However, scooters have become much more than just a fun way to get from A to B. Going for a family scoot in a local park is a great way to make the most of a crisp winter day and keep fit at the same time. It is surprising how far you can go on a Micro Scooter, even in a relatively short space of time, so they are a great way to explore the local neighbourhood together, pick something up from the shops or head off to a favourite café to give your children a well-earned treat!

ummy in the City is written by Tine Farstad, a London mum mostly running around in Chelsea, Fulham, South Kensington and Battersea with her toddler in tow.

The blog, launched in August 2012, is focused on life with under 5s in South West London, and covers topics such as pregnancy and preparing for a new arrival, different stages of child development, travel with baby and toddler, fashion for baby and toddler, activities for young children in and around London and child-friendly London restaurants. Prior to becoming a mum, Tine worked as a financial journalist and editor for more than eight years. She now works as a freelance journalist and blogger, and is a regular blogger for online fashion designer sale site BrandAlley, children’s clothing company Sue Hill, and private antenatal course company New Baby Company. In addition, she’s started a new distribution venture. Her new family business has exclusive distribution rights for the baby travel mattress SkyBaby in Norway, Denmark and Sweden. Tine first tested SkyBaby to review on Mummy in the City, and after seeing how much easier SkyBaby made flying with her daughter in the first year, she established the new company and secured distribution rights for the product in Scandinavia.

Recent Blog Top places to visit in London with children in Autumn

As the temperature has dropped and rain is on the forecast, I’ve started thinking about autumn excursions for me and Baby Girl, and here are some of the places in Central and East London that I’m sure I’ll include on the agenda:

The Unicorn Dedicated children’s theatre The Unicorn makes it easy to introduce young children to performing arts. The modern theatre, which is located near London Bridge, has regular productions aimed at families with young children, and tickets for these shows may even include a bit of playtime. Young audiences at The Unicorn can typically enjoy performances with easy-to-follow storylines, covering topics the children can relate to. It’s great fun to see even toddlers getting enthusiastic about going to the theatre, and these shows tend to have a lively audience with lots of pointing, waving and talking throughout.

Museum of Childhood To make children really excited about visiting museums, it’s worth making a trip to Museum of Childhood in Bethnal Green. Admission is free, and the museum boasts an impressive collection of toys, dolls’ houses, games and more–all very exciting for little ones. The museum also offers special family packs with toys and activity suggestions, ensuring families can make the most of their visit, and throughout the year there are special events for children, workshops and classes, such as dance sessions for under 5s. Museum of Childhood is easy to get to by tube, but I drove last time I visited, and it was easy to find pay-and-display parking nearby. Look at the congestion charging zone map if you want to drive outside.

Waterstones Piccadilly Whether you’re shopping for new books or simply need a welcoming place to stop in central London, it’s worth taking the family to Waterstones on Piccadilly Road. The children’s books section in this huge bookshop includes several play areas, and it’s easy to keep little ones entertained here. There are crayons and colour-in sheets, books, and pull-along toys – not to mention an impressive selection of children’s books to buy.

We don’t treat any adult patients in our children’s unit, so your child’s hospital experience will be completely tailored to their needs. We find that this can relieve your child’s anxiety about visiting hospital and help them to make a speedy recovery. Do bear in mind that some private hospitals don’t offer any on-site critical care facilities. Our children’s unit is fully equipped with the latest medical technology and facilities. Should the need arise, we have a Paediatric Intensive Care Unit, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and Special Care Baby Unit staffed by a dedicated team of critical care experts. You’ll be pleased to know that you won’t need to join a queue for this exceptional service. Our convenient and rapid appointments give your child the care they need at a time that suits your family and your lifestyle, including during the summer holidays so none of the new school term will be missed.

The Garden is a real treat to take your children to, its well-hidden in the basement. The first thing you notice when you walk in are small children wearing orange protective aprons playing in the most elaborate water table you have ever seen. Filled with small boats that float down a cascading canal, children are able to work different levers and pumps to direct the water and boats. It is really great fun. Further along is a play area that suggests a building site, with giant blocks you move around a small climbing frame using wheelbarrows, bag and pulley rope, a chute or any other imaginative ways toddlers can derive. There is an area of soft toys with an amazing multi-sensory room and puppets. www.sciencemuseum.org.uk

Battersea Park and Children’s Zoo This small, charming zoo in the heart of pretty Battersea Park is family-run with the usual rabbits, goats, sheep and chickens and the more exotic (some endangered) species such as meerkats, monkeys, emus, tortoises, wallabies and talking mynah birds. Feeding sessions take place throughout the day The wonderful outdoor play areas feature a large sand pit, mini trampolines, a tree house, slides, tunnels and, appropriately, monkey bars. The zoo also has indoor play areas, shaded picnic tables, a coffee shop, nappy-changing facilities and a shop for picking up some inevitable souvenirs. Birthday parties can be booked for ages our and over. www.batterseaparkzoo.co.uk

ondon Mothers Club (LoMoC) is the creation of Kerrie Anne, Sophie and Lisa: an eclectic trio who bring music production and promotion, events, HR and economics to the mix, with the common denominator of insisting on enjoying some of what they enjoyed before having children! And that is what London Mother’s Club is: a luxury destination for savvy mamas to connect and embrace motherhood through fun and informative events. It started in May 2012 when KerrieAnne decided that she wanted to get out and meet mums who had similar interests to her. Being quite creative, and with the intention of starting a craft club, she invited 10 mums to join her for an afternoon of crafts. Things soon took off and before she knew it, she was running 3-4 events per month and hosting her first fashion show with over 150 mums in attendance! They collaborate with amazing brands in London to bring bespoke

events such as high-end brunches at Aubaine, lunches, secret suppers at Michelin starred restaurants, pamper afternoons with the likes of Whole Foods Fulham, QMS Medicosmetics and celebrity salon Smiths, ask the expert sessions, craft clubs, fashion shows and family days. For the last two years they have supported the Jeans for Genes charity through their mum-models fashion show and their amazing family event: London Mother’s Club does a family affair. Their website and blog keep members up-to-date with what they are doing, things they love, latest trends and people that inspire us. Not only do they connect mamas through their events but are also very active on social media with 7000 twitter followers. London Mother’s Club is a perfect platform for mums and the wider family network to have fun whilst forging new lasting friendships. www.londonmothersclub.com

Active Learning can offer incredible nursery and pre-school facilities - indoor and outdoor... including dedicated sports coaches

A

t Active Learning, they believe passionately in the need for young children to be healthy and active in a sporting and outdoor environment to the extent that they have made it an important feature of their curriculum. Outdoor play is essential in the development of muscles to enable children to write and become independent as they learn to take calculated risks. They are probably one of the only nurseries in the UK to employ full time, fully dedicated sports coaches in order to offer a full sports curriculum. In addition they are upgrading all of their gardens over a 2 year period to incorporate natural and sporting environments in order to meet all EYFS criteria in the provision of outdoor play and to maximise use of the outdoors. This means that they can teach other lessons outside too, especially in areas such as science and maths and allows great opportunities for extended vocabulary development. And they teach rugby too. Recently ex international Ben Clarke and Rob Henderson came and coached their 3 to 4 year olds from several of the nurseries. New gardens... developing muscles to help with writing and reading-readiness One of the important factors for school readiness is having a strong sense of movement and balance in relation to gravity and space and being able to control one’s body. Movement that uses each side of the body also helps to link up the two sides of the brain by developing the bridge nerves that connect them. This is now understood to be important for a wide range of functions, one of which is visually following lines of text across a page when reading, and so outdoor play stimulates academic learning at the most fundamental levels. For this, children need a huge amount of opportunity for crawling, 8 2 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 4

clambering, climbing, running, using steps and slopes and any other cross lateral activity. Active Learning’s new gardens are designed to allow for precisely this development with the incorporation of clamber rocks, climbing walls, tunnels, stepping stones etc. The development of the shoulder, elbow and wrist are critical for the functioning of the hand when learning to write. Their outdoor vegetable patches and mud kitchens provide excellent opportunities for this development. Risk Taking and Independence In a society which now overprotects children, they are now largely denied the freedom and opportunities to explore, learn, make mistakes, climb, fall and simply play as most of us did. Parents do not realise that this is a fundamental part of their academic learning too. Most boys need to learn a climb a tree before they are able to write. Children need to have the opportunity to take calculated risks within an environment that supports, values and understands the importance of risk taking, to sometimes make a mistake, fall and then learn why. Helping children to ask themselves ‘is this a good idea if I do this?’ means that they become aware of risk without being averse to it. Ultimately, it is important to realise that avoiding all risks may be the greatest risk of all. As adults we need to educate and trust our children to make the right decisions and indeed to trust them to succeed. B ROMLEY HIGH Aiming High SCHOOL Giving Girls a Leading Edge

A

t Bromley High School we teach girls to be properly ambitious: to aspire not simply to excel but to innovate and to lead. The education we offer is one of all round opportunity but perhaps the greatest inheritance from Bromley High’s long history has been the tradition of challenging girls to take on significant leadership roles. Fundamental to this philosophy, at the pinnacle of the school, is our Head Girls’ Team, sixth-formers who provide role models of creative, fun and dynamic female leadership which sometimes run counter to the representations of women which girls encounter in modern media. This year, our youngest pupils can look up to Prefects who row or run at National Level, who are applying for Sports Scholarships at Princeton, Politics at Oxford, Languages at Cambridge, who dance at a professional level, who sing and play to an exceptional standard. These impressive young women are at the heart of our school chairing the School Council; captaining sports teams; leading assemblies; organising our charitable, entrepreneurial and environmental initiatives. Enterprising, enthusiastic and outward looking, we believe that it is not just exceptional examination results which give Bromley High girls the leading edge. Enriching young minds

for a successful future For over 125 years Sydenham High School GDST has been educating girls aged 4 to 18 from across London, Kent and the South East to outstandingly high standards with excellent GCSE and A-Level results. This Summer’s results were no exception as students celebrated exam success, prestigious scholarships and university places.

A

level results brought a one hundred per cent pass rate, with three quarters of Sydenham High students achieving A*/B grades and over a third securing A*/A grades. At GCSE, 65 per cent of students gained A*-A grades and 29 per cent achieved specifically A*s, with three girls gaining the magic number of ten A* grades. Ninety-six per cent of passes were A-C. However, Sydenham High’s belief that a 21st century education is about more than examining its students is equally central to its success. The school’s most recent Inspection Report (2012) judged it to be outstanding for providing a first class education that allows pupils to be intellectually fulfilled whilst offering lively, stimulating enrichment beyond the classroom. That enrichment is embedded in school life, right from Junior School, where girls are nurtured through their formative years: encouraging enquiry, fostering a love of learning and establishing the values, disciplines and attitudes that are central to their success as both learners and wellrounded individuals. With small class sizes and individual attention, education at Sydenham High Senior School continues the focus on helping each student to aspire with realism and achieve her personal best. It may be in scuba diving or being part of the hockey team; organising a fundraiser or being in the chess club; producing a school show or leading a Duke of Edinburgh expedition in Morocco. Whatever her individual talent, the school will help her discover and harness it. Headteacher Kathryn Pullen is proud of this transformational approach: “Our girls are articulate, well-informed and open-minded. They are not afraid to accept a challenge and have the courage to try new things and the self-belief to see them through. So as well as being proud of our students’ excellent academic achievements and the fact that they gain places on the courses of their choice, be that Oxbridge, medical school or a Russell Group 8 8 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 4

university, we’re equally proud of our award-winning choir; our musicians; our theatrical productions; our creativity in art and design (recently praised by the head of Conran) and our excellent sport.” The school has a scheme to support and encourage its elite performers, starting with young athletes in Year 9 and above who train and compete at club level, aspiring to be future Olympians. Similar schemes are planned for music and drama, areas in which the school also excels with a number of girls in the National Youth Theatre and National Youth Jazz Orchestra and National Children’s Orchestra. Sydenham High prides itself on enriching young minds in a way that will endure when exam grades are forgotten - something the school’s new sixth formers can readily confirm. For example, on their Induction Day, the 16and 17-year olds were challenged to examine the causes of and potential solutions to political disengagement in a university-style day of lectures and seminars, led by a team from Southampton University. Kathryn Pullen sums up the school’s mission: “We say that what makes us different is the difference we make - to each and every girl. Our aim is to prepare them for what the future holds: by setting high expectations, providing a strong academic framework, instilling confidence and supporting every girl’s emotional development so that she gains our three R’s: resilience, resourcefulness and reliability – attributes that are vital to deal confidently with an ever-changing world.” Open Mornings will take place throughout October and November – see website for details. “Buy To Let Is For Mugs!”

Earn 10% per year return for the next decade owning a dementia care home suite You rarely become wealthy by following the crowd and doing what everyone else does. And it’s clear that tens of thousands of people are entering the Buy To Let market in the belief that residential property is a one-way ticket to long term prosperity.

London Buy-To-Let Yields Are Now Below 3% That view is not born out by the facts. As prices continue to rise due to record low interest rates, net rental yields in London are falling to 3% or less. And that’s before you consider the hassle factor of being a private landlord. The market can go for decades with little or no capital growth, a historical fact ignored by many because they are too young to remember it.

This Commercial Property Yields 10% p.a. for 10 Years The good news is that a better alternative now exists for those savvy investors willing to be different to the madding crowd. Because it’s classed as commercial property, its value is based on its rental yield. There’s a huge social need which means demand massively outstrips supply in every area of the country. I’m talking about dementia care homes.

Helping Address the Dementia Epidemic With 820,000 dementia sufferers in the UK, it’s not surprising David Cameron has held two G8 Summits on the issue in London in recent months. One major local authority admits that only 12% of its care home stock meets the latest standards of the EU and the sector regulator, the Care Quality Commission. Yet our old friends the banks are still refusing to

lend against off-plan care home projects. So developers have had to get creative by enabling private investors like you and I to own individual suites on a 125 year lease. We lease the suite back to them for 10 years on a fixed rental return of 10% per annum, and there are a range of exit strategies during and after the 10 year period.

Savills Have Confirmed The Value & Feasibility Of the Project The dementia facility we can invest in is called Clifton Moor and its located near Wigan in Greater Manchester. It’s a 70 suite care home with every room overlooking the courtyard gardens or open fields. An independent report by Savills has confirmed the value of the home and its feasibility in the market, while KPMG have advised on the tax aspects for private investors. We can own a suite outright for £90,000 and receive £9,000 a year income, or place a deposit of £36,000 and take the remainder as an interest free loan paid back from rental income.

Watch This Video That Explains Why I’ve Invested In This Project I’ve recorded a detailed video to explain the whole concept and why I’ve invested in it myself. You’ll find it at www.CareInvest.co.uk When you understand the full details of this opportunity, I’m sure you’ll see why I believe that, in comparison, Buy-to-let is for mugs! Warm regards

AT YOUR SERVICE...

LONDON’S FIVE-STAR CONCIERGE CULTURE

N

othing is too much trouble for the new breed of highpowered property concierges in London. With half of the buyers of £1million + central London properties coming from overseas, having a top flight concierge to instruct you in the traditions and hotspots of the capital, perhaps book you a private helicopter, or simply show you how to switch on the washing machine, is an essential service that any property developer must provide these days. London concierges are a high-powered breed who will ensure a Rolls-Royce is waiting at your disposal, or sort out your family holiday to Mustique One new example is Rhodium, who are part owned by the Monaco royal family and work with developers including Finchatton and Candy & Candy. Their tasks have included organising a private Boeing 747 to take one family to Fiji, flying over 18 tropical fish from the Maldives and arranging for the Gipsy Kings to perform in a private apartment.

9 6 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 4

At NEO Bankside on London’s South Bank, where apartments start at £3.35m, concierge staff have been asked to play cricket outside on Christmas Day and rush to the airport with a forgotten passport. For owners renting out their properties, a high-end concierge service will add a 10% rental premium, but you’ll pay for the privilege. Service charges of £9 per square foot are not unusual, according to Marcus Bardbury-Ross from Prime Purchase, with owners of 9,000 sq ft flats at One Hyde Park paying up to £126,000 a year. The concierge’s natural habitat – the lobby – has also had a drastic image change, with double-height oases dotted with original contemporary sculptures and eclectic furniture now favoured. It’s all a case of “nothing is too much trouble” for today’s wealthy buyers.

A guide to the perfect Christmas Celebration We can help you create the perfect evening from a professional event organiser’s perspective, to ensure you deliver a real Christmas cracker of a party. 1. Set the date Christmas is obviously busy when it comes to social events, so diaries fill up very fast. You need to get a date agreed and a venue booked as early as possible. Ask the venue’s events team what is available and what you will need to hire in, such as furniture, entertainment equipment, staff on the night, Christmas decorations and a theme. If an overnight stay will be required, then find out about accommodation at the venue or nearby. 2. Establish a budget The size of your budget will ultimately have a huge impact on the type of Christmas party you organise, determining everything from food, drinks, the entertainment and the choice of venue. 3. What type of Christmas party are you organising? Is your Christmas party for your work colleagues, clients or friends? This has a bearing on how formal or informal you would like your party to be. Location, numbers attending, are partners invited? Do you want a bespoke or packaged Christmas party? A bespoke Christmas party is where you start from scratch, finding a venue and booking, organising and bringing together different suppliers for all the elements involved such as activities, themes and catering. A packaged Christmas party is generally organised by a venue. Often they will present a theme across an entire venue or function room, with the same entertainment and the same menu being served to different companies and parties each night.

catering or hiring in external caterers, if the venue allows this. Choose how you would like the food to be served. Would you prefer a buffet or a sit down threecourse meal with full silver service? Organise a vegetarian option if required and try to accommodate as many other dietary requirements as possible. Food can make or break an event so it’s important that you are confident in your choices. 6. Getting everyone in the party spirit! Choose arrival drinks. Festive favourites include Winter Pimm’s, mulled wine and Christmas cocktails, or you could even come up with a drink related to the theme of your night. Decide on whether you’re going to pre-order drinks or pay for what is consumed on the night. If you are concerned about spiralling costs you could narrow down the choices available or organise drinks vouchers Would you prefer waiter service or for guests to order from the bar? 7. Choosing the music and Entertainment The music is key to your party then make sure it is done properly. Hire a DJ, musician or live band. Coordinate between the venue, DJ and band to ensure you have all the kit required, such as stage, dance floor, and lighting. The entertainment can be one of the most talked about aspects of the whole event. Popular ideas include comedians, casino tables, magicians and caricaturists. You want to make sure you choose reputable suppliers and agree early on exactly what is in involved as you are relying on them to ensure your guests are entertained.

4. A theme for your party The theme is the heartbeat of your event and should be integrated throughout every aspect of the day or night. Some popular ideas include traditional Christmas, 60s, 70s, 80s, set colour or Hollywood film stars. Make a list of anything you would associate with the chosen theme. This should include physical focal points such as the entrance, the bar and table settings as well as the different stages of the party, for example, arrival, reception drinks, dinner, after-dinner dancing and drinking. You also need to account for any other elements of the festivities that can be included in the theme, such as the choice of music.

Adding that touch of extra Christmas sparkle You want your event to be enjoyable and memorable for all the right reasons. Here are some ideas for those little touches to help your event stand out: H ire a photographer. Many people will doubtless be snapping away on their mobile phones but hiring a professional will give you much better quality pictures and visual reminders of the event. P rovide a cloakroom – December is a cold month when large, heavy jackets are used, so take them off your guests’ hands when they arrive. I f security is required then make sure you book friendly staff. Those that will make your guests feel welcome will help make the whole event more pleasurable. M ake sure people can get to and from the venue and collect local taxi numbers so people can plan ahead.

5. The food Food is a key part of any party and can easily be incorporated into the theme you choose. Don’t feel like you have to stick with turkey! Depending on what type of venue you have chosen you will need to decide between using in-house

If investigating these ideas sound like a lot of hassle, you could contact an events company to do all the hard work for you, that way all you will have to do is select the best option. Some charge for their services and others just take a commission from the venue, event planner or the suppliers.

ANOTHER ROUND AT

THE SAVOY

Drinking places come and go but The American Bar at the Savoy has been a London institution since it first opened its doors in the late 1800s.

A

rguably its most famous head bartender was Harry Craddock, who arrived in 1925 and presided over a heyday of daiquiris, manhattans, dry martinis and other “mixed drinks” as cocktails were sometimes known. Craddock set his bar wisdom – not just recipes for drinks but also apercus on sherry and champagne down in writing and it was published as The Savoy Cocktail Book in 1930. The book is a classic, its hundreds of recipes and art deco illustrations republished many times over the last nine decades, and it is about to be reissued again by Little Brown, updated with a new introduction and even more Savoy recipes. There are easy-to-reference classic recipes, from Pink Gin (simply, gin with a dash of Angostura bitters) to fizzes and cobblers but the evocative names of some that have long been forgotten. Take the Hoop La! (a version of a Sidecar with lemon juice, brandy, Cointreau and Kina Lillet) or the Old Etonian (ginbased, with orange bitters and crème de Noyau – which is an almond and peach-kernel liqueur). 1 0 0 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 4

A large number of these recipes use vermouth, an ingredient now coming back into fashion but unlikely ever to feature so heavily on any bar drinks list as it does here. Absinthe, too, appears in many recipes, such as the Peggy in which it’s mixed with vermouth, gin and Dubonnet. If you are a wine lover, you will particularly enjoy the short wine section, which is mostly about bordeaux, though burgundy, champagne, sherry, port and “hocks and moselles” do also get a mention.

The new edition of the Savoy Cocktail Book published by Little Brown is on sale now at £14.99

Dan Aykroyd launches Crystal Head Vodka

with “Use Your Head” artist collaboration Oscar-nominated comedian, actor, screenwriter, musician and entrepreneur Dan Aykroyd has returned to London to officially launch the new Crystal Head Vodka 3L Jeroboam.

T

he pure Canadian vodka superbly presented in an iconic glass skull makes it so much more than your average drink of choice. Since its release in 2008, Crystal Head Vodka has developed a cult-like following and is now stocked across the UK in premium retailers and bars such as Revolution, The Arts Club and Luggage Room. The ultra-premium spirit has been renowned for its additive-free purity (making it the perfect blank canvas for mixologists) while the insanely cool hand-crafted bottle (which was originally designed by fine artist John Alexander who is also co-founder of the brand) has proven to be the perfect blank canvas for fans who have filled and decorated it in many beautiful forms. This passion for the design inspired the “Use your Head” project which put the infamous skull into the hands of the UK’s most groundbreaking artists. Their brief was to customise a 3L Jeroboam of Crystal Head Vodka to create one-of-a-kind collector’s items. East London based Nick Gentry, who rose to fame for his floppy disk portraits, is one of the artists taking part in the collaboration. Much of Nick’s artistic output has been created using obsolete media that has been donated to him. His Crystal Head Vodka sculpture incorporates hundreds of small personal items that have been contributed by people across the globe ranging from jewellery, watches and ornaments to handwritten notes. “The Crystal Head Vodka “Use Your Head” project is an iconic concept and I value the fact that it dares to be completely original. For my artwork, the public are invited to contribute personal artefacts and materials. These everyday objects are ingrained

1 0 6 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 4

with memories and personal experiences, which are unique to each viewer. While these objects physically remain frozen in time, the meanings are constantly changing.” Nick Gentry

Nick’s artwork will be for sale and on display in Selfridges from October onwards. “The “Use Your Head” campaign is the perfect marriage where art meets art. The celebration intertwines when our exquisite vessel flourishes in the hands of highly talented artists. Whether through film, music and now the spirit industry, it is a great pleasure in continuing that creativity through Crystal Head Vodka. I’ve always respected the London art scene and the abundance of emerging artists who show no boundaries.” Dan Aykroyd Dan has also made a contribution to Nick Gentry’s artwork, donating a very personal item; “My maternal grandfather served in the Royal Canadian Mounted Police rising to the rank of Staff Sergeant. Therefore I have included a lead figure depicting an RCMP Constable riding a black stallion.” For those who’d like to get creative making cocktails or making art, Crystal Head Vodka 70cl is available at premium retailers from £49.99. The Crystal Head Vodka 3L Jeroboam is available at Selfridges, all leading spirit merchants and online retailers.

PA RT I E S A N D V E N U E S THE CLUB AT CAFE ROYAL

London’s new private members’ clubs The capital has recognised that their wealthy residents are still spending furiously on the best that money can buy. And that include exclusivity. Private members clubs offer just that and more, for the elite and affluent living or working in London. With another club from the Home House group now expected in central London next year, here’s our roundup of the latest openings you can already seek out.

The Club at Cafe Royal Stars of fashion and music are traditionally too cool to join stuffy members clubs but the Café Royal hotel is trying to change that with The Club on its first floor. Stephen Fry, actress Emilia Fox and models Daisy Lowe and Arizona Muse are already said to be on The Club at Café Royal’s list, with access to its grand entertaining and dining spaces, as well as the hotel’s spa, Domino Dining Room restaurant and Oscar Wilde Bar, open until 3am Thursday to Saturday. There is a £1,200 joining fee and a £1,200 annual membership fee.

68 Regent Street, W1, clubcaferoyal.com

Upstairs Club at L’Escargot Upstairs Club at L’Escargot

Soho’s reorientation from strip clubs to members’ clubs took another step forward last month with the opening of the Upstairs Club at London’s oldest French restaurant, L’Escargot. The 280-year-old town house now has six rooms for paying members, including a large, bright, barrel-vaulted room called the Salon Grande Siècle. Its founders — restaurateurs Laurence Isaacson, co-founder of Home House, and Brian Clivaz, the man responsible for the relaunch of Mayfair’s Arts Club — have spent big on art, with Dalí and Matisse on the walls. “Membership is defined by friendship with the owners, and a liberal attitude to the arts and sciences — and life as it should be enjoyed,” it says, and it costs £365, a pound a day. Jonathan Saunders and i-D magazine held their London Fashion Week afterparty at the club.

48 Greek Street, W1, lescargotrestaurant.co.uk

Soho House SOHO HOUSE GROUP - LITTLE HOUSE MAYFAIR

As if the “tieless classes” who frequent Nick Jones’s Soho House empire are not satisfied with clubs in Chicago, Mayfair, Miami, Berlin, Hollywood, Shoreditch and New York, another is opening on Dean Street in May 2015, a stone’s throw from the original. In a 1732 town house, the club’s furniture and fireplaces will look a little more traditional than the others. It will be linked to membership of the rest of the group (£1,400), and Soho Houseonly members (£800) can use it while their club is being restored next year. Think three bars, open courtyard and basement cinema.

72-74 Dean Street, W1, sohohouselondon.com

APM People who dislike the idea of a members’ club should try out APM (Always Past Midnight) at the top of the Centre Point building — a collaboration between the Zinc restaurant and FOUR Magazine, which aims to revolutionise “London’s early-morning dining and party scene”. For £350-£500 per annum members can stumble in from Soho between 2.30am and 7am on Fridays and Saturdays for dancing and fine dining on the 31st floor. APM AT ZINC

I THINK I’VE FOUND A LUMP IN MY BREAST...

WHAT DO I DO? It is completely understandable that you might worry about the possibility of breast cancer if you find a lump, but remember; most lumps are not cancer. The most likely cause for a lump depends on your age.

Women from 20s to 30s In women from 20 to 30 a definite lump is most likely to be a fibroadenoma. These are benign lumps that can sometimes be painful or enlarge but they are not cancerous and do not turn cancerous.

Women between 40s and 50s Between 40 and 50 breast cysts becom more common. These are also entirely benign. They are collections of fluid within the breast and although they can also be painful they are not dangerous.

Women aged 30 and onwards From the age of 30 onwards the gland tissue in the breast changes and it becomes more fibrous and nodular. The way the breast feels has been described as like a scaled down packet of frozen peas and occasionally, in just the same way that frozen peas can stick together to form a clump, so breast tissue can “stick together” to form definite nodular areas. These areas are also often tender but, once again, are not a sign of cancer. 1 1 2 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 4

The rate of breast cancer begins to rise after the age of 40 and increases with age. Of course, breast cancer can occur at any age and I have seen cases in women as young as 19 and in their early 20s, but they are very, very rare. The important message is, if you notice a change in your breast please get it checked. Let’s go through what you need to do. The first thing to do is to see your GP and explain what you have noticed. They will examine you and in some cases may suggest a further check at a different time of your menstrual cycle. Some of the nodular areas can change with the cycle and this is actually a reassuring sign. If a discrete nodular area persists or your GP finds a definite lump, or is unsure, they will refer you to a breast clinic for a full assessment by the breast team. The team should consist of several consultants working together, and includes a surgeon a radiologist and a pathologist. The investigation of any breast problem revolves around, what is

B R E A S T CA N C E R AWA R E N E S S M O N T H

called, the triple assessment. It is like doing a jigsaw puzzle; pieces (of information) are collected and put together until the whole picture (the diagnosis) becomes clear. Indeed, this is often termed “the diagnostic jigsaw”. In some cases only 2 pieces may be needed, in others 4, but 3 (the triple assessment) is most common. Let’s have a look at what the pieces are. The first specialist you meet will often be the breast surgeon. They will ask questions about your symptoms (called taking your “history”). They will also ask about previous medical problems and your family history. They will then examine both breasts. How the breast feels when it is examined is the first part of the jigsaw. If there is a definite area of change then a fine needle aspiration may be carried out. This test uses a normal sized syringe and needle. The needle is placed into the area of the breast and “jiggled” so that a small amount of material is sucked into the syringe. This is sent away to be looked at under the microscope. More commonly now a test known as a core biopsy is done. A core biopsy takes a core of breast tissue about 1.5 cm long and 2 mm in diameter. The core biopsy is carried out by first putting some local anaesthetic into the skin of the breast. Once this has worked (it is quite quick) a small nick is made in the skin to allow the core biopsy needle, attached to the biopsy “gun”, to be placed into the breast. When the “gun” is “fired” (it is painless, but does make a noise rather like a large stapler) the needle takes the sample. This is often repeated a few times. The appearance of the cells that have been removed with a fine needle aspiration, or the result of the core biopsy, is the second part of the jigsaw. The final part of the triple assessment involves taking images of the breast. In ladies under 35 an ultrasound scan is the commonest way of doing this. In ladies over 35 they will have a mammogram as well. Full field digital mammograms are the most sensitive type available at the moment. What an area of the breast looks like on a mammogram or an

ultrasound scan is the third piece of the jigsaw. If the triple assessment produces the same answer at each stage the result is said to be concordant and no further tests may be needed. For example, a lump in a 30 year old lady may feel like a fibroadenoma, look like one on an ultrasound scan and a core biopsy shows pieces of a fibroadenoma. What if the pieces don’t quite fit and the picture (diagnosis) is not initially obvious (the triple assessment is then said to be discordant)? For example, in a 50 year old lady a lump may feel like a benign nodular area but look odd on an ultrasound with a normal mammogram. In this case another piece of the jigsaw may be needed, such as an MRI scan or even, occasionally an operation to remove an area for full examination under the microscope. An important part of the triple assessment that is not commonly mentioned is to watch how things change (or not) with time. It would not be unusual to check things a few months later, repeating some, or all, of the assessment to make sure nothing has changed. A thorough triple assessment may actually be a quadruple assessment! Once again it should be emphasised that in the majority of cases a triple assessment (or a quadruple one) will reveal that cancer is not present. Most symptoms are age related changes or benign lumps. However, it is important that any new change is thoroughly investigated by a specialist to make absolutely sure that all is well.

Easigrass offers the definitive EASI artificial grass solution for home & away

E

Easigrass is the most trusted artificial grass company in the UK. And with good reason. This year alone, Easigrass has installed artificial grass at some of Great Britain’s most quintessential locations: from Wimbledon VIP areas and Hotel Café Royal balconies to supporting their valued retail partner, John Lewis, with an 150th Anniversary roof garden.

E Environmentally responsible: no Easigrass installation is completed unless a site has flora or fauna in the vicinity to help support The Wildlife Corridor in the form of a plant, tree, shrub or plant pot. Even the smallest of balconies can be transformed with a flash of Easigrass and a potted shrub or plant. A Accreditation: all Easigrass products are ISO:9001 and ISO:14001 certified and the Company is proud to be closely linked with respected horticultural and gardening societies including HTA (Horticultural Trade Association), SDG (The Society of Garden Designers), BALI (British Association of Landscape Industries), and RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects). S Safety: Easigrass products provide family safety as well as optimum quality, with the option of laying additional shock pad in wet or dry areas housing pools or trampolines. In addition, Easigrass products are pet friendly and make it easier to keep your pets and their environment clean, fresh and mud free. I Integrity: the Easigrass group prides itself on its commitment to excellence at all levels and guarantees that installations are carried out professionally, at the time of installation and in relation to maintenance and follow-up.

Easigrass allowed music lovers to ‘hang up their Hunters…’ back in 2013 during the Summer of Love at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park for the sell-out Live Nation gigs and Brits fell in love with ‘Oops A Daisy’ Gromit at The Gromit Unleashed Festival, raising essential funds for a Bristol Hospital.

The Easigrass Group of Companies is rapidly expanding throughout the UK and overseas within UAE, South Africa, Spain and the Balaerics. So whether you seek an artificial lawn solution for your family or holiday home, there is only one option. The EASI option.

asigrass is the UK’s No1 award-winning artificial grass company offering a one-stop-shop installation and maintenance service for both UK and overseas homes alike. The Easigrass range of luxurious artificial grasses are responsibly made, installed and maintained by a trained team of professionals who take pride in their craftsmanship. LIGHT-UP YOUR

OUTDOOR SPACE When you spend time outdoors, entertaining your family and friends, you’ll need adequate lighting to illuminate your outside space.

W

hether you’re sitting outside on your patio area, or you wish to place a spotlight on specific areas of your garden, outdoor lighting can serve these purposes. You have a variety of options to suit your individual tastes, the size of your outdoor space, and its purpose. It’s important to consider what you need and how you will use the lighting, and with so many benefits to outdoor lighting, you can add beauty, function and safety to your outdoor areas.

Primary points to deciding on your outside lighting are 1.SAFETY Use a combination of uplights as well as lights installed on outdoor structures to illuminate your seating areas effectively. Outdoor lighting can add safety in a variety of ways. Light pathways to ensure that people navigate these areas safely. Use zone lighting to illuminate areas of your garden and landscape for night-time use. Zone lighting can be effective for lighting your patio, swimming pool or outdoor seating area. Illuminate driveways, garages and entryways to keep your outdoor space safe after dark. The more lights, the safer your outdoor areas will be. 2.SECURITY A well-lit driveway and garden presents a feeling of security and maintenance. When you keep your outdoor areas illuminated, you present a feeling of care and involvement. Install lights with motion detectors so they illuminate when motion activates them. A dark garden can be splashed with bright lights when someone walks through – this can be helpful to deter would-be criminals from trespassing on your property.

1 2 6 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 4

3. COMFORT Extend your living area into your garden, particularly if you entertain outdoors on a regular basis. If you have a patio with seating, add comfortable and attractive lighting to enable you to use these areas after dark. The ambience of outdoor seating can be pleasant and inviting, especially when you feature attractive outdoor lighting that adds to your outdoor decor. Use a combination of lights installed on outdoor structures to illuminate your seating areas effectively. 4.DECOR Showcase and highlight specific areas with decorative lighting. By installing lights around your garden in various spots, you pull the eye to these areas and display them attractively. Lighting can be a wonderful way to display planting areas or flower gardens. Install mood lighting along outdoor buildings to add pleasant splashes of light. You can even add low-voltage exterior lights to trees and shrubs outdoors to illuminate planting areas and add beautiful accents to your exterior areas. 5.CURB APPEAL A well-lit home presents a cared-for impression to your neighbours and visitors. Your house will appear warm and inviting, and in contrast to a dark and drab home, your illuminated home will draw people in and offer a warm refuge for family and friends. Regardless of the purpose of your outdoor lighting, the benefits are all positive. From increasing safety and security to creating a warm and inviting environment, adding outdoor lighting will enhance and beautify your home.

THE IMPORTANCE OF

THE RIGHT FLOORING Developers and interior designers understand the importance of the floor covering in a Domestic or Commercial area. The floor finish is crucial to the success of the room; it might not be as exciting as the latest kitchen gadget or remote controlled lighting but the flooring will have a far greater impact on the overall look and feel of a room than fancy gadgets or the latest technology.

I

nterior designers invest considerable effort into choosing the right flooring solution; one that injects colour and texture but also suits the architectural space, and one that will stand the test of time both physically, by it’s durability, and stylistically by not dating quickly. High street trends can quickly date but choose the right flooring, whether that is contemporary, urban or traditional, and it will have timeless appeal. Natural stone flooring is one such classic look with timeless appeal, whether it is marble, limestone or slate or any of the other myriad natural stone tiles available. Natural stone is, without doubt, beautiful and can be used to create a totally unique floor but it can be difficult and timeconsuming to maintain. Fortunately advances in tile manufacturing technology have meant that porcelain tiles can now offer a great alternative for domestic and commercial use. With not only the look of natural stone and the textures but durability that is hard to match. Responding to demand from the marketplace tile production technology has advanced significantly in recent years with porcelain tiles now available in textured wood effect as well as natural stone, metallic and leather effect finishes, all with the durability of porcelain. The subtle tonal variations and textures in porcelain tiles has encapsulated the naturally occurring variations of stone but the use of porcelain enables complete design flexibility because it can be used as both an interior and exterior tiling material and comes in large sizes (up to 1.2m square) which would not be practical with natural stone. Traditional stone and traditional materials are the source of inspiration but modern tile manufacturing processes have reinterpreted the natural product to be more suitable for the modern home and commercial installations.

1 3 0 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 4

But porcelain floor tiles are not only available in natural effects – they are available in a range of finishes, colours and sizes from extra-large 1.2mt x 1.2mt to standard smaller sizes and high gloss white tiles through pretty much any colour and finish you can think of including muted shades and strong colour palettes. You can view a wide range of porcelain tiles at the Décor Tiles & Floors showroom in Watford. They hold extensive stocks of high quality porcelain tiles from over 40 top European brands such as Aparici, Casalgrande Padana, and Gardenia Orchidea, as well as designer tiles from Versace and Philippe Starck. Décor Tiles & Floors have developed close business relationships with the leading tile manufacturers across Europe over many years since the company was first established in 1976. Many of these manufacturers have embraced the principles of sustainability in order to preserve our environment, making the choice of porcelain tiles an eco-friendly one. And if you remain convinced that only a natural product would be right for you, then Décor also stock natural stone wall and floor tiles and a wide range of real wood flooring. Décor have many years of experience working with architects, interior designers and developers; their products can be found in high-end luxury homes throughout the UK. So if you need help finding the right flooring for any project whether it is a small residential project or a large commercial project simply call on 01923 248531 or take a look at their website www.decortiles.co.uk.

London Reclaimed The charity London Reclaimed has a much greater resonance across a wider spectrum than you might think. On the one hand it takes old, used and discarded London timber and creates new, handsome and functional furniture using traditional cabinet making skills combined with modern technology and machinery, which is why I’m interested to begin with. On the other and more important hand it is giving employment to young people from troubled backgrounds, giving them a purpose in life, a paid job and teaching them a trade skill to put them on the right road for the rest of their lives. These are the furniture craftsmen of the future.

stubborn to work with. Much the same as young people can be, and not every project and person has been an immediate success, but the Biddulphs do not give up and I cannot overstate the extraordinary achievements in producing great and characterful furniture and personalities. In the furniture they incorporate ancient decorative features such as the side of a drinks bar formed of old chapel pews or the legs of a coffee table being old bedposts, in the people they bring out the very best in souls that may well be otherwise lost.

This is the other reason I am interested, for the future of the antiques trade will depend on competent and well-taught restorers.

Obviously this registered charity needs funding with money, timber, materials, machines and commissions but this is not an appeal. I just wanted to put down my own admiration and wholehearted support.

This wildly aspirational idea was started in 2012 by father and two sons of the Biddulph family in a workshop in Peckham. In such a short time they have made huge progress with work completed including a restaurant kitchen and work in hand involving creating pieces for interior designers and private commissions. It has not been easy. Old once-used timber is difficult to reshape and

ny proud homeowner knows that keeping your home looking its best is just as important as keeping yourself wellgroomed. Redecorating your entire property can be costly in both time and funds, but subtle nods to the latest trends in interior design keep things looking and feeling fresh.

Here are the key interior trends for 2014 that you may want to think about incorporating: TREND 1 TURQUOISE The pastels and beiges of previous seasons are being firmly placed to one side as 2014 sees us embracing richer jewel tones. Turquoise is undoubtedly the must-have colour of the year; if you don’t want to commit to a full feature wall in the colour, then consider adding some accessories such as cushions, throws or rugs to bring in the trend. Be sure to choose shades that are rich as opposed to more subtle tones this look is all about opulence. TREND 2 MIXING TEXTURES The fashion world saw an explosion of texture in 2013 as quilted fabrics and leather became big news. In 2014, this trend seeps into the world of interior design. Leather cushions can be mixed with corduroy throws to add interest to your sofa, or add some excitement to the bedroom with blends of fur and satin. The key is to mix your textures to create an eclectic feel. TREND 3 SHEER DRAPES If you have read our blog post on how to make apartments look bigger, then you will know that light is an essential to making the most of your space. Luckily, in 2014 one of the most fashionable things you can do for your dwelling is to open up the space around your window by replacing heavy curtains with light, sheer fabrics. Choose sheer curtains

or simply pick up some fabric from a local market to drape over your curtain pole for a casual, bohemian look. TREND 4 OPULENT KITCHENS Minimalist kitchens were the height of interior fashion a few years ago, but simplicity takes a back seat in 2014 as glamour arrives on the menu. Don’t get glamour confused with gaudiness, however; this look is all about decorative, Eastern-inspired lighting, sparkling metals such as brass, and richly painted wood. Some quirky accessories such as ornate kettles and teapots add the perfect finishing touches for this trend. TREND 5 VINTAGE PIECES Tying in with the luxury that the other trends encompass, this season your home accessories should all have flair and originality. The best way to do this is by picking up vintage, one-off pieces that nobody else is likely to have A vintage armoire or chaise longue are the ultimate statement pieces, but you can also achieve the look with smaller items such as a vintage clock on the mantelpiece or some vintage movie posters. TREND 6 TRANSPARENT FURNITURE Certainly not a trend for the faint-hearted, in 2014 acrylic furniture is going to become big news in interiors. Fans of minimalism will adore the added space and light that transparent chairs and tables allows for in a room, while fashionistas will love the retro feel that it creates. If you’re not quite brave enough to go for full acrylic, then transparent legs on sofas or tables will create the same effect, though more subtly. TREND 7 HEXAGONS In 2014, things get very edgy. In fact, the more edges the better. Things that were traditionally square in shape – think tiles, tabletops and mirrors – are given a modern twist by appearing in hexagonal form.

athroom design has come a long way in the last 20 years. Whilst the importance of functionality remains; many more homeowners are now spending time and money to ensure striking aesthetics within their bathroom. Designer bathrooms are a common site in many homes and such a project can add real value to the property. If you are seeking to create a modern designer bathroom look in your home then the tips below will help you achieve that goal. A stylish bath

CREATE A

LUXURY

OASIS

We love bathrooms, especially beautiful and spa-like ones where we can create our own little oasis at home. Whether you have your own bathroom retreat or are looking to create a new one, you’re just a few ideas, products, and steps away from the bathroom of your dreams.

The first bathroom suite item to deal with is the bathtub. This is the piece of furniture that you will get the most enjoyment from and it is important to ensure that it provides comfort to the user. However, going for a practical model doesn’t mean that you have to sacrifice style and there is a vast range of bathroom models, from twin baths that allow two people to bathe side by side, to corner baths that serve to maximise available space. If you prefer the more traditional rectangle shaped bath, there are still options available that provide that designer feel. Going for a separate tap installation also serves to create a unique look. The shower option Whether you have enough space to install both a bathtub and a shower, or prefer to just have the latter in your bathroom; your choice of design will have a huge impact on the room. Quadrant shower enclosures that fit into the corner of the room with an arc shaped glass enclosing the two sides, give an elegant finishing look to the suite. If you are planning to splurge on your bathroom and you have the space, you might like to consider a walk-in shower enclosure. Walk-ins give you greater mobility and access, and look grand as well as plenty of space to really relax and unwind. It is a good idea to have glass on as many sides of the shower enclosure as the bathroom allows. This will greatly help to increase the light in the room, which will in turn give the illusion of spaciousness. An appealing basin Although you probably consider the bath or shower as being the most important of furniture in your bathroom, it is also the basin that acts as a central item in designer bathrooms. This is due to the fact that it will almost always have a mirror placed above it, which immediately draws the attention of anyone who enters the room. As such it is important to install a basin that looks fantastic. One option is to fit a vanity unit, with the basin sunk in so that it is flush with the surface. Alternatively you could add to the aesthetics by mounting the basin on top of the vanity unit and go for an unusual design, such as a funnel shaped basin. However, if you are going for an ultra-modern look and want to keep furniture down to a minimum, then a vanity unit may not be the right choice for you. In such instances a hovering sink with hidden pipes is a good option. If you have a big enough bathroom and enough wall space, you could even decide to go for the double sink, which not only look great, but are also useful in a busy household. Little luxury touches Carefully coordinate your towels with the colour of the walls and bathroom suite. Add a stylish looking towel rail electric element to heat up the towels for added luxury, which also comes with an added advantage of warming up your bathroom. Decanting your soap and shower products into matching bottles is a simple way to create a stylish look in your bathroom. Coordinate other accessories such as the toilet roll and toothbrush holder. Get a sleek and stylish cabinet or matching boxes to hide away less attractive products or those you don’t want to show. A well-chosen bathroom rug, a potted plant in the corner, or a framed picture hung on an empty wall; small pieces which can completely revamp the look of your suite. Strike a balance by picking just a few significant pieces of bathroom furniture which will contain a certain colour. Offset it by choosing a neutral or contrasting colour in other accessories. By ensuring that your accessories are attractive and functional, along with some good, soft lighting, you can create a calm and relaxing retreat, right inside your home.

intelligent design FOR LONDON HOMES

T

he Brayer family first started making furniture back in 1918. William Brayer, a cabinet maker who was a student of the Arts & Craft movement, opened his first workshop in Shoreditch. The Brayer family then specialised in manufacturing glass display cabinets in Art Nouveau and Art Deco styles. William’s great grandson Barry continued in the family tradition and today oversees the design, manufacture and installation of bespoke built-in furniture for residential refurbishments. Barry enthuses ‘I get an immense sense of pride knowing that the family name continues to be connected with beautiful furniture’. Barry’s workshop is now based in Surbiton, just outside of South West London. ‘The cost of running a workshop in central London meant that we needed to relocate’, Barry adds ‘We found the ideal premises just off the A3 which meant we could still be in central London within an hour....on a good day! It also meant that we had the space to open up a Showroom above the workshop’.

1 4 0 O C TO B E R 2 0 1 4

Brayer Design are mainly known for bespoke kitchens, bedrooms and libraries but have recently been commissioned to design, build and install wine rooms. ‘Wine rooms fit perfectly within basements and look amazing with glazed doors so that the wine is permanently displayed. The clever use of concealed lighting along with temperature and humidity control creates real wow factor and ensures the perfect conditions for storage’. Barry says, ‘As many people within London are choosing to extend their homes with basement and loft conversions, bespoke furniture, along with intelligent design, is of great importance. Clean, uncluttered lines are especially important when designing loft conversion furniture as it is often difficult to maximise the storage potential in these sometimes awkward angled spaces”. If you’re planning to embark on a refurbishment Brayer Design would be happy to discuss any aspect of your project with you.
