LATE GEORGIAN CHAISE LONGUE
Decorative Antiques & Textiles Fair 21ST - 26TH JANUARY 2014 - BATTERSEA EVOLUTION, BATTERSEA PARK, LONDON SW11 4NJ Miss Austen At Home: From Mansfield Park to Chawton The current Jane Austen bi-centenary bonanza (Pride & Prejudice was published in 1813, Mansfield Park in 1814, Emma in 1815…) has inspired the Decorative Antiques & Textiles Fair to feature a display presenting two Regency interior styles the author would have been familiar with. Whilst Mansfield Park is fictional, Jane would have spent time in similar houses: her brother Edward inherited two quite grand properties. Her own home, a cottage in the village of Chawton, Hampshire, would have been furnished simply and in a more vernacular, ordinary English country style. Regency influences are still seen in contemporary furnishings; flock wallpaper patterns were first fashionable in the period, and ‘gothick’ style inspired by Walpole’s Strawberry Hill is currently found in Nicky Haslam’s furniture range for OKA. Miss Austen At Home will be curated by Helen Linfield of Wakelin & Linfield, one of the UK’s leading experts on 18th and 19th century furniture. The display will re-create two rooms of different social echelons, as they might have looked in Regency England when Jane Austen was writing. Whilst some items will be fashionable up-to-the-minute Regency design (1811-1820), in the main a collection comprising numerous earlier periods will demonstrate the layering of history typical to most homes of the time. The display will therefore include pieces from the late Stuart period through to 1817 the year of Jane’s death. All items, which are for sale, will be drawn from exhibitors at the Fair. The Fair is pleased to be working with specialist historical wallpaper makers Hamilton Weston. Excitingly for the Fair, they are producing for the first time a pattern dating to circa 1780 that will be used in the Chawton Cottage area of the foyer display. The ‘Mansfield Park’ element of the display will be a formal country house drawing room of circa 1800-1815, with a mix of periods as you might expect in a wealthy country home: a fine Georgian bookcase, writing desk, comfortable upholstered late-Georgian wing-back or Gainsborough-style chairs, a sofa and a few earlier pieces such as a pair of William & Mary carved-back elbow chairs and a large Aubusson rug. A screen-printed wallpaper by Hamilton Weston called Royal Crescent will be used in the ‘Mansfield Park’ drawing room, in shades of green, grey and white. The pattern of large but delicate swags and floral motifs was discovered in an 18th century parlour of a house in the Royal Crescent, 1 0 J A N U A RY 2 0 1 4
Bath. It is a direct imitation of a Robert Adam design of the period, and dates from around 1775 Chawton Cottage will be simpler, countrified and more sparsely furnished; an oak gate-leg table will serve for a dining area, with ladderback and Windsor chairs. Jane Austen wrote at a small pedestal occasional table. The walls will feature samplers, silhouettes and etchings of the late Georgian period and watercolours that may have been executed by the ladies of the house, and nautical sketches – two of Jane’s brothers were in the Navy. English ceramics, such as creamware and traditional metalware will finish the scene. Hamilton Weston will be supplying a paper for Chawton Cottage they will produce for the first time, based on a discovery from a housekeeper’s room of a property in central London - astonishingly, it was hung face down and appeared to have been used as a lining paper behind later wallpaper layers. The document’s original colouring was black and white on a grey ground. The design has been re-drawn by architectural historian Robert Weston from a pieced-together collection of tiny and incredibly fragile salvaged fragments. Now named ‘Dashwood’ (from the family in Sense & Sensibility), the design will be blockprinted for the Decorative Fair foyer using a grey background with white and black pattern details. Grey was a very popular colour for wallpaper (which was expensive) as it served to disguise discoloration from candle and wood-smoke. It is the first time the Fair has featured formal English furniture in a foyer display. The Organisers hope it will be an engaging demonstration of the wealth of fine Georgian design available, and that, amongst the inspiration the Decorative Fair brings, customers might view with a fresh eye. More than 140 dealers from the UK and Europe will participate in this Winter edition of the thrice-annual Fair. Interesting and unusual furniture, mirrors, lighting, accessories and works of art from the 17th to 21st centuries are displayed with flair for interior inspiration. Admission: £10.00 inc. catalogue, which gives free re-admission throughout the week Free Shuttle from Sloane Square www.decorativefair.com

GREAT SCOTLAND YARD TO BE TRANSFORMED INTO LUXURY HOTEL £100M REDEVELOPMENT OF THE FORMER HOME OF THE LONDON METROPOLITAN POLICE, WILL SEE IT REOPEN IN EARLY 2016 AS A LUXURY HOTEL
T
he historic Scotland yard building will take a new look as Londonbased developer, the Galliard Group together with the Crown Estate is all set to convert the building into either Mercer London or Chateau Marmont London, or an equivalent ‘Hollywood-level’ brand. Spread over 92,000 sq ft, the 235-bedroom hotel will open in 2016 and will boast of the capital’s most luxurious and expensive VIP suites, available for £10,000 a night. The new hotel will be located in a quiet and tranquil street with London’s most famous landmarks including Trafalgar Square, 10 Downing Street, the Mall and Buckingham Palace in close proximity. The Galliard Group have already acquired a 125-year lease on the building. Starting this month, the next 26 months will see construction in progress – costing over £50 million. Key features at the new hotel will include a grand entrance foyer, winter garden lounge, signature restaurant, cocktail bar and lounge, and a 120-seat main conference room. The new development will see the building extended with two new levels of basement and two new floors above the existing roof top. While the Imperial red brick and stone façade of the building will be retained, inside the building will be fitted with bespoke specification and state-of-theart technology, entertainment systems and security systems. The adjoining Edwardian office building at 1, Great Scotland Yard will be incorporated into the new hotel, with the space being used to create a VIP suite. Arranged over several floors, the suite will include a VIP bedroom suite on its own private floor complete with walk-in dressing rooms, day room and a spastyle main bathroom with living room, media room and other entertaining on other levels – making it one of the most luxurious and expensive hotel suites in central London. Stephen Conway, chief executive of Galliard Group said: ‘Our vision is to create one of London’s most outstanding 5-star hotels. It really is a blue-chip building with grand architecture, a fascinating history and large dramatic interiors.’The street is quiet and tranquil yet on the doorstep of London’s most

famous landmarks including Trafalgar Square, 10 Downing Street, the Mall and Buckingham Palace.’ Rich in history, the building at 3-5 Great Scotland began life as an Embassystyle dwelling for the Kings of Scotland when they visited King Henry VIII and Queen Elizabeth I at the neighboring Whitehall Palace. In 1829, Home Secretary Sir Robert Peel selected Great Scotland Yard as the headquarters of the newly founded Metropolitan Police force. It was where investigations into the likes of Jack The Ripper were centred, and featured in the novels of Charles Dickens and Arthur Conan Doyle. The building’s main entrance was at 4 Whitehall Place, but a public office was installed to the rear at 3-5 Great Scotland Yard, giving the headquarters their famous name. And in 1910, the current Edwardian building was constructed on the site and served as the British Army Recruitment Office and Royal Military Police headquarters. Further in 1982, a refurbishment introduced a new atrium and the building later became the Ministry of Defence Library until 2004. The Galliard Group are currently in talks with leading top hotel operators to create ‘the perfect luxury destination hotel’ at the address. The Galliard Group of Companies Founded in 1992 and with over 700 staff, Galliard is a property development, hospitality and management group overseeing mixed-use, residential, hotel and commercial projects across London and southern England with a £1.3 billion portfolio of over 5,900 homes, hotels, retail premises and commercial properties. In addition to 3-5 Great Scotland Yard, Galliard is currently undertaking three other hotel projects in London in Canary Wharf, Greenwich and Deptford providing a total of 284 bedrooms. Recent outstanding examples of Galliard hotel projects include the re-development of the 68 room/suite St James’s Club & Hotel, now one of Mayfair’s finest boutique hotels; the creation of the new 398 bed Park Plaza Hotel at County Hall and the re-development of the Grade II-Listed Jacobean Harte & Garter Hotel and Spa near Windsor Castle.

The Million Home LONDON HOUSE SET TO BECOME UK’S MOST EXPENSIVE PROPERTY
T
he six-storey Grade I listed Regency mansion boasts 50,000 sq ft of living space, nearly as large as a whole football pitch, making it one of the capital’s largest private homes. With a view of St. James’ Park and within walking distance of Buckingham Palace, Trafalgar Square and Piccadilly Circus. It is situated off The Mall, and is one of the most exclusive streets in London with few residential properties.
Reports have suggested that a ‘strictly confidential’ brochure, which describes 18 Carlton House Terrace as ‘probably the finest residence in London’ has been circulating among the super-wealthy. The property is registered in the British Virgin Islands, and said to be owned by a member of the Saudi Royal family. The secret brochure apparently shows interior photographs which were taken in the 1890s, because the current owner does not want to advertise the contents of his home for security reasons. Details on the interior are sketchy, but there is believed to be a magnificent double staircase and a huge ballroom. According to reports, the house has four storeys above ground and two below, that could be converted into a spa, cinema, and swimming area. The owner has reportedly spent millions restoring the town house to its former glory. Property expert Henry Pryor, who pointed out that the ‘nearest corner shop will be Fortnum & Mason’, said: ‘I think it will almost certainly be bought by a foreign buyer.’ The property is 1,537 times more expensive than the average house sold last month in the UK, which was worth £162,606. At the asking price, the buyer will face a £17.5million bill for stamp duty. Despite the shaky economic recovery, 2012 was a record year for sales in London worth more than £5million, according to research by estate agent Savills. Last year, more than 400 properties were sold over that threshold, up from 350 in 2011. With so many properties now fetching nine-figure sums, oligarchs might be tempted to move to Kensington’s Egerton Crescent, Britain’s priciest street - where they can pick up a bargain with the average house costing just £8million. If 18 Carlton House Terrace reaches its £250million asking price, it will be the UK’s most expensive home - but it is not the only super-pricey property to reach the market in the past year. Last autumn, a huge house at Rutland Gate overlooking Hyde Park was put on sale for £300million, although its price was slashed when it failed to find a buyer. Around the same time, 1 Cornwall Terrace, opposite Regent’s Park, was advertised for £100million, which estate agents said was the highest price ever asked for a terraced house. Outside Central London, Heath Hall in Hampstead was also marketed at £100million - which later had to be lowered to £65million. Cambridge House on Piccadilly, formerly home to the In and Out Club, is currently being renovated and could fetch more than £200million when it is sold. The previous record for a London sale is £136 million paid for a property at One Hyde Park in Knightsbridge.

David Beckham buys £600,000 Damien Hirst painting… for his daughter’s new bedroom She may be just two years old but celebrity tot Harper Beckham is already on her way to developing a refined eye for art and fashion.
M
overs were spotted carrying a Damien Hirst painting into the Beckham’s new mansion in Kensington, London. The seven foot painting of a pink heart embellished with butterflies is aptly titled “Daddy’s Girl” and is valued at £600,000., dwarfing a similar artwork commissioned by them for daughter Harper’s first birthday in July 2012. Hirst, who recently painted a minimal Mickey Mouse for charity, is a friend of David Beckham and the Beckham residence is home to many of his works. A source was quoted as saying, “The removal firm was extra careful with the Damien Hirst. It was packaged up and no-one wanted to drop it and put a hole in such a valuable work of art.” This isn’t the first time that the Beckhams have splashed out for their only daughter. Harper’s legendary wardrobe includes outfits and accessories by top designers including Marc Jacobs, Chloé, Burberry and Stella McCartney. The couple, who are estimated to earn around £100,000 a day, paid £31.5million for the Grade II-listed property – and did not need a mortgage. The purchase went through in September, but was officially recorded only last month.

Apparently, their new home has seven bathrooms for its eight bedrooms and more than 9,000 sq ft of floor space, not including a 100ft Oriental garden. Interior designer Kelly Hoppen is believed to have been drafted in to help with plans to completely revamp the property. The couple will sleep in a huge master bedroom, there are three guest rooms, and the kitchen will be fitted to restaurant standards. As well as a large walk-in wardrobe/dressing room, Mrs Beckham, 39, will have a personalised manicure and hairdressing room which will have four nail bars, hairdressing chairs and mirrors surrounded with bulbs. There will be a playroom for the couple’s children – Brooklyn, 14, Romeo, 11, and Cruz, eight, and daughter Harper, now two – who will each have their own bedroom. Beckham, 38, has a personal ‘snug’ in the roof of the house which will be equipped with a bar and a pool table. The couple have a range of business ventures that have allowed them to buy their new home without the need for a loan. His company, Footwork Productions, showed a profit for 2012 of £14.7million, up from £13.4million. Beckham Ventures, which handles Victoria’s fashion business, posted a profit of £2million.

Your last single Valentines...
Valentines Dating Tips… • If you get invited, go! It could just be a one-off encounter, or you may even make a lifelong friend, but what if you find your life partner? What do you have to lose? • Fail to prepare, prepare to fail – This applies to all aspects of dating. A well groomed appearance, plenty of conversation topics and a great location are absolutely key. Ensure the basics are fool proofed and the chemistry will deal with itself. • Have confidence in the qualities you have to offer a partner, knowing yourself well never fails to be attractive. • Listen and be attentive, you might be missing something…or someone. • No one is perfect, be honest about your flaws and embrace others imperfections, it could open your eyes to a whole world of missed opportunities. After all, everyone has something unique but equally great to offer. • Be honest. Don’t spend hours with someone if you’re not interested in a relationship with them. Equally, you should handle rejection gracefully. Of course this can be hurtful, but what’s meant to be will always find its way…so sit back and enjoy the journey!

n fact, they were neighbours, at Mayfair’s 25 and 23 Brook Street respectively, albeit separated by a couple of centuries. Handel lived in Mayfair from 1723, while Hendrix took up residence in 1968. (He was seen buying a copy of the baroque composer’s Messiah at a record store in South Molton Street.) In 2015 Hendrix’s flat will be transformed into a permanent museum, celebrating the life and legacy of the musician. It is one of countless examples of how for centuries London has lured, captivated and inspired musicians - of every genre. We live in a city of music – something that the London-based music licensing company PPL is keen to preserve, ensuring that those artists who invest their time in making recorded music are paid fairly for their work - and you don’t have to look far to unearth the streets and sights, and the people and melodies of London life that underpin this creative bond. Who can stroll Baker Street without hearing the alto saxophone from

Their names are seldom uttered in the same breath, yet composer George Frideric Handel and psychedelic rock guitarist Jimi Hendrix have much in common. Gerry Rafferty’s 1978 chart topper, or cross Waterloo Bridge - in the footsteps of Terry and Julie - without hearing The Kinks’ epic Waterloo Sunset? Of course Kinks main man, Ray Davies, has immortalised many corners of London. From Soho (Lola) and Kentish Town (Dead End Street), to his hometown Muswell Hill HENDRIX IN HIS MONTAGU (The Village Green Preservation SQUARE APARTMENT, 1967 OTHER FAMOUS OCCUPANTS Society). Like Gershwin, lost in INCLUDE RINGO STARR, SIR the romance of A Foggy Day In PAUL MCCARTNEY, JOHN LENNON AND YOKO ONO London Town, and Noel Coward © AUTHENTIC HENDRIX LLC celebrating The Lambeth Walk, and Bertha From Balham, Davies, mined, honed, and polished the poetry of the streets the rest of us take for granted. Almost every inch of the capital is exalted: Greats from Glen Miller and Frank Sinatra to Rod Stewart have covered Maschwitz and Sherwin’s A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square; The Clash put Notting Hill and the Westway on the map, as did Squeeze with Clapham Junction; Suggs and Madness have honoured Camden Town; Linda

Lewis and Adam and The Ants, Hampstead; The Rolling Stones sang about the Chelsea Drug Store and the Street Fighting Men in Mayfair’s Grosvenor Square; and of course The Beatles, recalled The Fool On The Hill (on Primrose Hill). Not all musicians come to write about London. Some, Lou Reed and country rockers The Eagles, (who took up residency in Barnes while recording their eponymous debut set) come for the capital’s creative edge. North Londoners will recall Bob Dylan announcing some years ago that he was thinking of moving to Crouch End, after an extended recording spell, and by all accounts a few pints, with former Eurythmic Dave Stewart. Mozart was just eight years old when he completed his first symphony in a house off Sloane Square. The bricks and mortar, the very fabric of London have played their part. Bob Dylan shot the iconic promo for Subterranean Homesick Blues in the shadow of The Savoy, holding cue cards he and Donovan, the singer dubbed ‘the British Dylan’, had been up all night scrawling. And is there a more famous, or enigmatic, telephone box than the one David Bowie posed in for the cover of the 1972 album, The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars? To relax and unwind there is the Ian Dury memorial bench - that plays some of his tracks - in the glade he loved in Richmond Park.
Eel Pie Island in the River Thames at Twickenham, was known as a major jazz and blues venue in the 1960s. Famous names who performed at the dance hall between 1957 and 1967 include: Long John Baldry’s Hoochie Coochie Men (including Rod Stewart), David Bowie, Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones, The Tridents (featuring Jeff Beck) and The Yardbirds. The island and studios are opened twice yearly to the public. Rod Stewart himself was born and raised in Archway Road, Highgate. Ultimately, it was the Fab Four, who in a few short minutes walking back and forth across a zebra crossing in St John’s Wood, close to the studio where the Liverpudlians recorded some of the most enduring music of the 20th century, created the most iconic of all London music images, the cover of Abbey Road. Forty five years on (2014) it remains a potent shrine for music lovers from all over the world. Another beat, on another memorable street, in this city of music and recordings that are timeless. THE
MUSEUM PRESENTS…
Club to Catwalk: London Fashion in the 1980s UNTIL 16th FEBRUARY 2014
Club to Catwalk: London Fashion in the 1980s, will look at how the impact of underground club culture was felt far beyond the club doors, reinventing fashion worldwide. More than 85 outfits by designers such as John Galliano, Vivienne Westwood and Katherine Hamnett will be on display together with accessories by designers including Stephen Jones and Patrick Cox.
T
he ground floor gallery will focus on the young fashion designers who found themselves on the world stage for creating bold, exciting looks. The mezzanine gallery will concentrate on club wear, grouping garments by tribes such as Fetish, Goth, Rave, High Camp and New Romantics. This includes clothes of the type worn by Boy George and Adam Ant, as well as more extreme designs worn by Leigh Bowery. The Catwalk To provide a snapshot of the most fashionable and creative designers working in London in the 1980s, the exhibition shows a display of garments by influential 1980s designers, with a substantial amount of menswear designs by Jasper Conran, Paul Smith, Workers for Freedom and Willy Brown who dressed Duran Duran. Textile design played an important part of 1980s fashion, with designers such as Betty Jackson helping to create the archetypal early 80s silhouette of loose shirts and bold prints. Wendy Dagworthy utilized Liberty prints while English Eccentrics and Timney Fowler made print fashionable. There will also be sections dedicated to the energetic, bright clothes of Chrissie Walsh, Georgina Godley, Bodymap and John Galliano. In the early 1980s Katherine Hamnett pioneered the vogue for stylish, casual clothing. Her designs were often based on utilitarian boiler suits and army fatigues. She conceived a series of T-shirts emblazoned with slogans, using fashion as the platform for her Green politics. John Galliano graduated from St Martin’s School of Art in 1984. His degree Collection, Les Incroyables, was inspired by the French Revolution and he spent many hours studying the dress collections at the V&A. Two of Galliano’s menswear ensembles from the 1985 Fallen Angel collection will be on display, this section will also explore the emergence of knitwear as fun and fashionable. The Club London’s clubs in the 1980s acted as a site for the convergence of music and fashion and provided a safe environment in which young people
3 6 J A N U A RY 2 0 1 4
could experiment and mix with those of similar tastes. Examples will be displayed, ranging from the exaggerated, exotic styles favoured by the Blitz crowd, to the dance influenced looks of acid house. In September 1982, The Face observed a ‘hardening of attitudes in music and fashion’ that reflected the economic conditions of Thatcherite Britain: ‘Ubiquitous Levi’s worn into holes, leather dominating everything … big boots and no socks and espadrilles … T-shirts ripped and torn’. The ‘Hard Times’ look coincided with a revival of rockabilly style in clothing and music. Michiko Koshino’s first store in Covent Garden had a dance club atmosphere and included DJ turntables to complete the effect. In 1987, she began a line of menswear called Motorking, which was worn by David Bowie and Moby. Her club designs included garments made from inflatable plastic fabric that blurred the distinction between art and fashion. Rave and euphoric house nights, where the dance music created an atmosphere in which inhibitions were totally gone, changed dress once again. Following the summer of 1987, a number of DJs began to recreate the sound and atmosphere of the Ecstasy-fuelled Ibiza dance clubs. The atmosphere of friendly and fun clubs like Shoom began to be reflected in much more casual styles. The dressed-up aesthetic of earlier clubs, like Taboo, was replaced by ‘ponchos, dungarees, and loose T-shirts bearing the yellow Smiley motif’ as reported The Face in June 1988. A small club-like area will be created within the space to show film footage of clubs from the 1980s and stream music compiled by Jeffrey Hinton. There will also be unique garments made for club stars such as Leigh Bowery, Scarlett and Juliana Sissons. The clubs were a place to perform and shine and the clothes, worn by men and women, were extreme and made a statement. To book visit www.vam.ac.uk or call 020 7907 7073 (booking fee applies)

NEW YORK Make like Rita Ora, Jessica Chastain and Naomi Watts with the Tribeca trench by Terra New York, the much coveted raincoat of the moment...
T
erra New York is the first, smart and innovative designer rainwear company created by a duo of designers, marketing professionals, and bicycle lovers. The label offers fashion-forward, functional, designer rain gear for the style-conscious urbanite as well as the bikesavvy suburbanite.
Their rainwear products are crafted to withstand the heavy rain and other inclement conditions of city life all while projecting a sleek and stylish look. Terra New York raincoats are 100% water proof, using heat sealed technic for the seams to stop water seeping through though breathing openings in the sleeves and underneath flap storms provide comfort to the wearer. The brand was founded in New York by Yurika Nakazono and Marie Saeki, who began with one simple question: What can a fashionconscious woman wear when it’s raining? Since necessity is indeed, the mother of invention, months of research followed, leading Nakazono and Saeki to launch their own head-to-toe chic rain gear collection. The name Terra New York meaning is smart as it’s products, it stands for the number three in Latin TER (2 founders 1 vision) and the

METAR code for rain: RA (the most popular format in the world for the transmission of weather data). The collection is built on protection and the design for each rain wear piece is based on the vision and desire of the founders to push rain gear options for rainy days just a little bit further. For the first collection, Terra New York features materials such as heavy TPU/ Urethane to provide structure to the waterproof raincoats and uses the same material in varying weights for hats, bags, and shoes. DESIRE FAIR AN UNMISSABLE EVENT TO BE HELD AT CHELSEA OLD TOwN HALL | 7-9 FEBrUAry
C
helsea Old Town Hall will be the venue for the renowned Desire Fair from 7-9 February. This stunning mixed media jewellery and silversmithing event where visitors can purchase direct from contemporary designer makers selected from the best in the UK is an event not to be missed. Desire offers visitors a choice of around 80 individual jewellers and silversmiths who have been selected for their superb and innovative craftsmanship and have a genuine passion for the work they create. Visitors can see and purchase from an exciting range from both emerging British talent as well as more established designer makers. Exhibitors include jewellers working in gold, silver, platinum, palladium, aluminium, copper, brass, glass and bronze and incorporating felt, gemstones, seaglass, buttons, pearls, glass, enamelwork and beads into their work. Anyone celebrating a special occasion – maybe a birthday or anniversary - may also like to speak to many of the makers about commissioning bespoke pieces of jewellery or silverware. Several visitors in the past have commissioned engagement or wedding rings at the event and, by working with the designer maker, have been able to have input

into the design and come up with something that means so much more and is completely individual. Many of the makers will also be happy to speak about remodelling old jewellery to give it a more contemporary feel. It is also a fabulous opportunity for treating someone to something special for Valentine’s Day! Amongst the silversmiths exhibiting at the event is Rebecca Joselyn who was featured with her work on the Channel Four programme, Four Rooms. The work, inspired by today’s lifestyle of throwaway packaging is highly collectable and has been purchased by the Duke of Devonshire. Whether you are looking to treat yourself, purchase a unique gift for someone special or commission something for a special occasion, make a date to visit Desire at Chelsea.
MORE INFORMATION Opening times for the event are 10 am – 6 pm Friday, 10 am – 5 pm Saturday and Sunday. Admission is £5.00. For further information contact the organisers on 01622 747 325 or visit the web site at www.desirefair.com. Venue: Old Town Hall, King’s Road, London, SW3 5EE.

Too much Time on your hands?
O
nce upon a time a man would own one watch. It would be cared for, maintained and possibly only worn on special occasions rather than every day – especially if the owner worked in manual labour. I say ‘own’ rather than buy because this watch may have been passed down from father to son or bought as a gift for a significant birthday. Ladies often went without a watch altogether and if they wore one, the same rules applied as for men. Back then, watches were an important and relatively expensive purchase and the idea of a collection or ‘wardrobe’ of watches would have been out of the question. Things have changed and, despite the fact that the correct time is displayed all around us on computer monitors, mobile phones and even microwave ovens, watch ownership continues to rise. Whether they are Swatches or the finest haute – horology
43 26 JDAENCUEAMRBYE2 R 0 1 24 0 1 3
more of us have an increasing number of watches. Not that these are curated collections, carefully built up after careful consideration of each purchase – rather we accumulate watches, as gifts, pieces bought in our youth that we would never wear now, family bequests as well as current favourites. Our tastes evolve over time and the watches that fall out of favour end up at the back of the drawer gathering dust. What better way to offset the cost of the festive season than by having a little clear-out? While a drawer full of cheap and cheerful quartz may not pay off the bills – you never know what you might find. That watch you inherited but never wear may be a vintage classic. You might find that you only wear white metal now, leaving a collection of gold or gold-plated pieces bereft and ignored. What may be a dated and ugly watch to you may be a retro
gem to a collector – or maybe not. Fellows Auctioneers handle more watches per year than any other UK auction house and offer watches for sale at a wide range of values. Valuations for auction are free and can be requested through the Fellows website very easily. With over 35 watch and watch-related auctions per year you never have long to wait for your items to sell. The auction process is an increasingly popular way to sell watches and jewellery. The worldwide exposure of the sales through the development of online bidding means that your goods achieve their true market value while the auction charges are often much lower than the margin a dealer or retail shop would hope to make. If you think you might have some unloved watches in the back of a drawer or the bottom of a jewellery box, get in touch with Fellows. Our friendly and knowledgeable staff will let you know whether it would be suitable for auction and how much you might expect to make.

For peace of mind OPT FOR SPECIALIST ADVICE
IF YOU OWN HIGH VALUE PROPERTY, DRAW ON SPECIALIST ADVICE AND HIGH-NET-WORTH INSURANCE PRODUCTS TO STRIKE THE RIGHT BALANCE BETWEEN PRICE AND PROTECTION.
T
he rise of “price comparison” websites has arguably created a false impression that all home insurance policies are basically the same, and that “getting good value” equates to getting the best price. The reality is very different, particularly if you own a higher value property – usually defined as subject to a rebuild cost of more than £500,000. Price is only part of the picture, and getting good value means finding a balance between price, protection and personalised service. That is, while the cheapest standard policy may be adequate for the average three-bedroom home, it may be a false economy for high quality homes. In particular, the risks to your home and contents are likely to be more diverse, the potential losses more significant and the process of replacement or repair more involved – especially if you own expensive jewellery, fine art, antiques or bespoke furniture. As a result, you will almost certainly need the kind of tailored protection that standard household policies simply do not offer – and you will need to be sure that you have adequate cover in place to protect the full value of your property and its contents. Unfortunately, if you do get the balance wrong, you may not find out unless you come to make a claim, by which time it is already too late.
ABOUT MARSH As a global leader in insurance broking and risk management, Marsh is ideally placed to help you find a bespoke insurance solution designed with you in mind. Working with a specialist also helps overcome the issue of underinsurance. At Marsh Private Clients we work to ensure that high value homes and possessions are valued correctly and insured for the right sums, so you know from the outset precisely what is insured and for how much. To arrange your tailor-made insurance solution, Marsh works with specialist insurers who have the flexibility to adapt to even the most complex risk scenario.
INSURING A HIGH VALUE PROPERTY: COMMON PITFALLS TO DISCUSS WITH A SPECIALIST INSURANCE BROKER 1. Confusing price with value: Any savings made on your home insurance with a standard policy could prove a false economy if, later on, you lose thousands on a claim because you didn’t have adequate cover. 2. Under-estimating the value of your home or contents: Under-insurance is a serious problem, particularly if your home is worth more than the average. A survey found that one in two higher-value properties may be under-insured. 3. Banking on your insurance to cover you for all eventualities: Standard policies are likely to be ‘perils based’. This means you are covered only for loss or damage resulting from specified perils – such as fire, theft, storm and water damage. 4. Forgetting to check if your insurance policy is “warranty free”: Standard policies are likely to include an alarm clause or ‘warranty’ which invalidates theft cover should you, for instance, go out and forget to set the burglar alarm. 5. Letting an insurer dictate how you replace lost, stolen or damaged items: You may prefer to have cash or to replace a lost item with something slightly different, particularly if it was one-of-a-kind or had sentimental value.

The Electric Cinema takes comfort to the next level
The Electric Cinema in Notting Hill are now offering six double beds in the front row providing a unique cinema experience for couples to watch films under a cashmere throw.
T
he historic and elegant interior of the Electric, a Grade II* Listed building, reflects the cinema’s 103 year long history. You can also view from a choice of sixty-five leather armchairs with footstools and side tables offering unparalleled comfort. In addition there are three 2-seater sofas at the rear of the theatre. The bed tickets are cheaper than the regular seats because they are on the front row, which also means no room for too much hanky-panky – or one can only hope! The beds will be sold in pairs for £18 per person, compared to £20 per person for regular tickets. The Electric Cinema first opened in London’s Portobello Road on 27th February 1911 and was one of the first buildings in Britain to be designed specifically for motion picture exhibition. It was built shortly after its namesake the Electric Cinema in Birmingham, which predates it by around two months. The Electric Cinema was retitled the Imperial in 1919, serving an avid local audience with three different double-bills a week, rather than the first-run films of the their grander cousins in the West End. A philosophy of rapidly changing programmes, and alternative choices, that has coloured the cinema’s reputation ever since. During the 20s and 30s the cinema would thrive, and by 1946 was attracting four thousand people a week. During World War I an angry mob attacked the Electric, believing that its German-born manager was signalling to Zeppelin raiders from the roof, after nearby Arundel Gardens was hit by a bomb dropped from a Zeppelin. The Electric weathered the initial wartime order for cinemas to close in fear of gathering crowds during the Blitz. But as London grew resilient to the raids, the day-to-day life of the cinema carried on. Indeed, if air raids commenced during a showing, an announcement would flash onto the screen and the audience would head for the nearest shelter collecting a refund on the way out. The Electric Cinema Club first formed under cover of night, using the Imperial for late night alternative shows on Friday and Saturday nights, commencing with Luis Bunuel’s The Criminal Life of Archibaldo De La Cruz.
4 4 J A N U A RY 2 0 1 4
So popular were these midnight showings, taking more than a whole week’s admissions, they expanded to take over the cinema. The Imperial was rechristened the Electric in the 1960’s, with new manager Peter Howden famously installing Winston Churchill’s old projectors. In 1970, the Club took over the whole premises, refurbishing the building to the tune of £50,000 and creating one of the finest repertory cinemas in the world. Curiously, when they replaced the screen, they were delighted to discover the original 1911 screen painted on the wall. In April 1998 the Cinema was sold to an unspecified buyer. In the meantime, Sasha Gebler of Gebler Tooth architects, had fallen in love with the Electric having seen it in a dilapidated state in 1997 after taking a look on behalf of the owners of The Travel Bookshop. The cinema was in need of a radical overhaul in order to bring it up to date with current cinema regulations. It reopened, in February 2001 just in time for the Cinema’s 90th birthday with 240 seats and a rep-based programme rather than first run and peppered with live music events. When the neighbouring shop became available, a plan was mooted to create a luxury cinema, members club and restaurant; a new lease of life for the Electric. With the original arch surrounding the screen protected by English Heritage, an ingenious expanding monitor was designed so visitors can see Cinemascope movies. The Cinema’s film programme comprises a mix of quality mainstream and art house films. It also shows classic titles that are critically acclaimed alongside eagerly-anticipated new-releases. The auditorium and bar open 10 minutes before the advertised programme time, serving cocktails, wine, beer and champagne. The Cinema, restaurant and an upstairs private members club Electric House have all enjoyed great success and the Electric is now one of London’s favourite cinemas. A COUNTRY EXPERIENCE SO CLOSE TO LONDON
P
etersham Meadows is a bucolic area of southwest London, part of a timeless view protected by Act of Parliament. Richmond Park is also famous for its wildlife; both border one of Richmond’s hitherto best-kept secrets The Dysart Petersham. This haven of great food and drink is located in a beautiful Arts and Crafts building sympathetically restored by its owners, the Taylor family, whose son Barny is the Manager. As well as being a popular venue, cosy in winter, airy and refreshing in warmer months, The Dysart Petersham is rapidly gaining acclaim for the fabulous food being served by its award-winning head chef, Kenneth Culhane. He serves contemporary British food, enhanced by a wealth of diverse influences gained while honing his skills in some of the world’s most famous kitchens. One of fewer than 30 chefs worldwide eligible to use the designation ‘Roux Scholar’, Culhane has been steadily gaining a band of loyal ‘foodie’ fans since his arrival in Petersham a year or so ago. What drew the owners to appoint him was his like-minded interest in, and understanding of, the value of sourcing top quality ingredients from known suppliers. These suppliers include a local forager who produces a steady supply of wild leaves, herbs, seeds and flowers that inspire the chef to draw upon the best from the richness and rhythm of the seasons. Balance and restraint are key – whether in the actual cooking or the support for traditional husbandry and ethical sourcing from animals and plants alike. In summer diners can eat al fresco in the lovely garden terrace overlooking Richmond Park. Reservations can be made for tables in the garden – part of which can also be reserved for private dining. The tree lights in the garden twinkle through the leaded windows on

winter evenings while diners inside enjoy the log fire and candlelit tables. ‘Christmassy’ ‘Romantic’ ‘Magical’ are words often used to describe this picturesque restaurant. With an excellent value set menu (£18.50 for two courses, £22.50 for three, lunch Monday-Saturday and dinner Monday-Thursday) The Dysart Petersham is popular with local residents and business people wanting to escape the bustle of Richmond or nearby Kingston. Many guests are choosing the Seasonal Tasting menu (six courses) that, at under £50, represents superb value. For £29.50 diners can augment this with matching wines by the glass (or beer match for £27.50), but there is also an excellent and very interesting wine list starting from £18.50 a bottle or by the 500ml carafe from £12.50. On Thursday to Saturday evenings live ‘understated’ background music is played in the restaurant (on the grand piano, classical guitar or lute) further adding to the atmosphere. There is a secluded alcove in the ground floor restaurant that seats up to 14 – this is also perfect for family or business celebrations over the festive period. There is also a lovely first floor room with its own bar, open fire and panoramic views across Richmond Park – ideal for a drinks party for up to 80 or a sit down meal for up to about 44 guests. Not surprisingly, word is getting around about this very special restaurant and booking is advisable, especially at the weekend.

Stretch your potential at Sydenham High
STRETCH! is the very apt name that’s been given to the newly expanded enrichment programme for year 12s at Sydenham High School. In line with the school’s ethos of going way beyond exams in providing an education for life, this varied programme offers the girls the opportunity to build new skills and hone existing ones alongside their academic studies. Course options include: photography, Raspberry Pi computer building, indoor rock climbing, first aid and cookery which takes place in the newly converted cookery room. Parents and friends have already tasted the fruits of the girls’ labours there, under the expert guidance of trained chef Mikkaila McKeever-Willis, including delicious home-made pasta and a variety of sweets and treats. The girls even helped to bake and build an impressive replica of the school entirely from gingerbread! Instilling the importance of community service is also embedded in a Sydenham High education and all girls entering the sixth form participate in some form of Community Service, be it work in the Junior School, assisting in local charity shops and libraries or at nearby St Christopher’s Hospice. Members of the sixth form have also recently joined forces with Dulwich College to take part in a Saturday School programme for local maintained junior schools. The girls received training at the start of last term and are now assisting with year 6 Saturday classes on a regular basis. Academic excellence from individual attention at Fine Arts College, Hampstead
F
ine Arts College is an independent sixth form college specialising in arts and humanities subjects at A level. It also offers a one-year GCSE programme in a range of subjects in Year 11 and a one-year Portfolio Course for students preparing for art school entry after A levels.
The Ofsted inspection in 2012 rated the College ‘outstanding’ in all aspects.
The College has around 150 students in total, which allows for small class sizes and a lot of individual attention. It prides itself on having a nurturing and co-operative atmosphere in which all the students are individually known and their progress monitored. A system of personal tutorials and internal reports means that students have a weekly opportunity to talk to a personal tutor about their work and any difficulties they may be having. The College was founded in 1978 by the present joint Principals, Nicholas Cochrane and Candida Cave, and aims to provide an opportunity to study in a mature and stimulating atmosphere that is a unique bridge between school and university. Virtually all students move on to higher education at a range of universities and art, music or drama schools. The College buildings are in Belsize Park, with the main site in a sunny 5 0 J A N U A RY 2 0 1 4
but secluded courtyard. Well-equipped classrooms each have their own specialist subject library and there are art, textiles, music, photography and media studios. The College is not academically selective and in the light of this its examination results are exceptional. In 2013, 86% of A level entries were graded A*- C and 36% were A* or A grades. Among the many success stories this year one student won a place at Oxford University to study English Literature, two others gained places at UCL to read History of Art and another is heading to Exeter University to study History. Some students take the creative route to study Fine Art, Graphics or Photography, for example. GCSE results were equally strong in 2013, with 85% of entries, including Maths and English, scoring A*-C and an impressive 48% of entries achieving A* or A grades. Admission at A level is based on an interview with the Principals, satisfactory GCSE results and a reference from a previous school. Admission at GCSE is based on interview and reference. Admission to the Portfolio Course is through an interview with the Principals and portfolio assessment. For more information contact the College on 0207 586 0312.

In this month’s article Healthy Balance Integrated Medicine practitioners share their advice on your health issues. This issue, Steven Fullagar and Amanda Hart contribute. Q: I have been feeling generally quite achy and sore recently. I am wondering if this is just because it is winter and I am getting older or whether I should be more worried?
Q: I have enrolled in a weight-loss programme (again!) and I feel I need some extra help in sticking to it this time. Do you have any suggestions to make this year a success?
A. Whilst it is not uncommon to hear patients blame the wintery
A. Many people find it difficult to stick to diets as they end up
weather or their age making aches and pains worse, neither can necessarily be said to be the culprit. Aches and pains are likely to be experienced by most of us at some point in our lives. Usually these symptoms can be put down to a bout of flu or an overambitious new exercise regimen. However, in some cases they may be a clue to an underlying health issue that needs further investigation.
feeling deprived. Successful and sustainable weight loss requires the right mind-set as well as a very healthy eating plan. Healthy changes that are easy to adopt long term work better than drastic quick fix diets. And let’s not forget the importance of increasing activity.
So if you feel you are not getting better and you are unsure what has caused your aches then you would be sensible to make an appointment to see your primary healthcare physician. Sometimes simple blood tests will reveal the answer. For example, having said that your age or winter are not necessarily to blame, it is possible they can be contributory factors in putting you at risk of vitamin D deficiency which itself can be a cause aches and pains. A visit to a registered osteopath or physiotherapist can be a good place to start to help establish if they are being caused a biomechanical problem. Your GP is always a good port of call, especially if there are other symptoms that appeared at the same time.
To understand what healthy eating really means and to curb cravings, consider seeing a nutritionist who is registered with BANT (British Association for Applied Nutrition and Nutritional Therpay). A few sessions of hypnotherapy incorporating Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) can also help to get you into the right frame of mind to start your dietary changes and to keep you on track. It can also help to reinforce your ‘why power’ – your motivation for making the changes – which is usually far more effective than ‘will power’! Hypnotherapy helps many people to reach their weight loss goals, where other methods on their own may have failed, and it can also help to improve eating habits permanently. Good luck!
Steven Fullagar is an osteopath and naturopath and the director of Healthy Balance.
Amanda Hart is an APHP registered clinical hypnotherapist and BACP registered psychologist specialising in reducing phobias and negative habits.

IN A CLASS OF THEIR OWN... THE DEFINATIVE GUIDE TO EXERCISE CLASSES
Looking for a new way to keep fit for 2014? You have made the decision to get in better shape through exercise and like the idea of doing so in a group environment or fitness class. The camaraderie of a fitness class – along with the motivation, instruction and expertise of the instructor – can help to ensure you get the most out of your workout.
Here is a guide to the fitness class - which one is for you? Budokan Budokan is a mixture of martial arts and yoga that is slowly taking hold of the fitness world. Celebrities like Jennifer Aniston and Courtney Cox swear by the Japanese art that hones the physical self by way of concentration of the mind and slow concise yoga and martial arts movements. The workout aims to improve stamina, speed, agility and flexibility. On top of that, the meditation involved strengthens the inner mind. In one 90 minute session, you can shed around 800 calories, making this an all-over workout! Zumba Zumba is the new fitness craze! Originating from Latin dance styles, Zumba is a cardiovascular and aerobic exercise routine that infuses exercise with dance and choreography. The workout is alternates between fast-paced and slow-paced dance moves which are practiced in time to Latin rhythms. Among the dance form’s influences are salsa, hip-hop and rumba. This South American workout tones the body through its use of resistance exercises which effectively amount to interval training due to the varying speeds at which they are carried out. Zumba has gradually gained in popularity in the last decade, and is now at an all time high! Aerobics Aerobics has come a long way since Jane Fonda first donned her legwarmers! The basic premise remains, however: aerobics involves exercising to music, using repetitive patterns of movement to work the 6 6 J A N U A RY 2 0 1 4
cardiovascular system and burn calories. Many aerobics classes have moved more towards dance recently – and so aren’t the best choice for the choreographically challenged – but there is also a move back towards more simple movement patterns, where the focus is on getting a good workout rather than learning moves you can take to the dancefloor. Aerobics can be ‘high impact’ or ‘low impact’: ‘High impact’ aerobics simply means that the impact is greater, because moves in which both feet are off the floor simultaneously are involved – such as star jumps and jogging on the spot.‘ Low impact’ aerobics means that one foot is always in contact with the floor during a movement – such as when you’re marching on the spot, rather than jogging. Step aerobics Step aerobics has fluctuated in popularity since its introduction in 1989, but it never goes away. As with aerobics, step classes can range from an athletic but simple routine – involving various ways and combinations of stepping up and down onto an adjustable platform – to practically dancing over a step. The simple act of stepping up and down forms a solid aerobic workout that focuses on the muscle conditioning of the legs and bum. The step is also often used as a base for floor exercises at the end of the class. The names of the different types of step classes give a clue to their content – for example, ‘athletic step’ or ‘power step’ will involve more jumps and power moves, while ‘step ‘n tone’ is likely to focus more on the muscular endurance side of things, and may involve hand weights for upper body conditioning.

Aqua aerobics Aqua aerobics is an umbrella term for all kinds of fitness classes that take place in water. Aqua aerobics have got a bit of a reputation as being only suitable for pregnant women and old ladies – but this is far from the case. While the water does provide a supportive environment and minimises the impact of exercise on the joints, it also provides resistance to every move you make – so even marching on the spot in water is harder than it would be on land. Aqua aerobics is also a good option for those returning to fitness after an injury. Some aqua classes take the standard aerobics format and use music, while others are more akin to circuit training classes, where you move from one exercise to another with a short rest period between each. Circuit training Circuit training involves a number of exercises – or ‘stations’ – which are performed one after the other, with a short rest in between. The whole exercise circuit is usually repeated a few times. Exercises vary, but tend to include aerobic exercises such as shuttle runs, star jumps and burpees, along with strength moves such as push-ups, squats and lunges. The nature of a circuit training class means that, rather than raising your heart rate and keeping it high for the duration of the class, it gives you more of an ‘interval training’ effect, where you mix intense bursts of activity with recovery periods. It is a very effective way of improving aerobic fitness. Boxercise/Kickboxercise Boxercise and kickboxercise are derivatives of boxing and kickboxing and use the drills and techniques of their respective sports in a non-contact setting, usually in the form of a circuit. For example, you might find yourself shadowboxing, skipping, using punch bags or teaming up with a partner to punch or kick focus pads. Both are considered one of the best all-round high intensity exercise classes to get you in great shape. One study found that people felt more calm, more focused and less anxious after a kickboxing class. Taking out all that aggression on a punch bag can therefore be a great stress reliever! Pilates Pilates is a form of exercise which works on restoring correct posture and alignment (which are under constant attack from our seated, sedentary lifestyles), strengthening the muscles that stabilise the joints, and working particularly strongly on the abdominals and back. Pilates is named after Joseph Pilates, who developed a series of exercises to help dancers with injuries and muscle imbalances and weaknesses in the 1930s. The movement exercises are very precise, focused and controlled, and performed on an exercise mat in a class context. Yoga Yoga strengthens muscles, improves joint flexibility, and enhances
balance, coordination and posture through a series of diverse poses (or ‘asanas’).There are many types of yoga. For example, ashtanga yoga is more energetic than viniyoga. Yoga works on the whole body without favouring one side (unlike daily life!), and includes forward and backward bending, twists, balances and inversions. Movements are coordinated with the breath. Different types of yoga have very different focuses and approaches – so it’s best to watch a class or speak to the instructor before you take part. Pump/body pump The concept of a group strength training class using adjustable barbells and set to music has now diversified, and you may find classes with other similar names. Traditionally, ‘pump’ is pre-choreographed and set to music – so you might do lower body moves to one track, chest moves to another track, and a set of exercises for the arms to yet another different track. The good thing about pump class is that the weights available are heavy enough to invoke a strength training response (unlike body conditioning classes) – which is a good way of introducing yourself to the whole concept of strength training without having to set foot in the gym! The fact that you do so many repetitions of each exercise, and that you move swiftly from one muscle group to another, also gives each pump class a reasonable aerobic element. Tai Chi Tai Chi has been described as ‘meditation in motion’ – and one look at a Tai Chi class in action will tell you why. It is a slow, flowing sequence of movements, known as ‘the form’, which has been practised in China for centuries. There is a strong focus on how to breathe, and the movements are very precise. Well known for being a good stress reliever, research has shown that Tai Chi can help to lower blood pressure, improve the body’s immunity and alleviate back pain. Dance While it’s not strictly a fitness class, dance has permeated onto so many gym studios and fitness timetables that it cannot be ignored! The common factor of dance-based fitness classes is that they are derived from the pure form rather than being a lesson in it. In other words, ballet sculpt class won’t teach you to be a ballerina, and salsaerobics won’t give you the necessary skills to take to the floor like a dance champion! What they will do, though, is give you a taste of the benefits of dance and appeal of the ‘real thing’. Dance classes are a lot of fun and tend to be very sociable – plus the high concentration factor means you’ll hardly be aware that you are doing a ‘workout’. On the downside, though, you won’t actually get much of a workout if you spend half the class trying to figure out which way to spin or how to shimmy. That said, there are so many different types of dance to try that you are sure to get the hang of one of them.

I think I’ve found a lump in my breast...
What Do I Do?
It is completely understandable that you might worry about the possibility of breast cancer if you find a lump, but remember; most lumps are not cancer. The most likely cause for a lump depends on your age. Women from 20s to 30s In women from 20 to 30 a definite lump is most likely to be a fibroadenoma. These are benign lumps that can sometimes be painful or enlarge but they are not cancerous and do not turn cancerous.
Women between 40s and 50s Between 40 and 50 breast cysts becom more common. These are also entirely benign. They are collections of fluid within the breast and although they can also be painful they are not dangerous.
Women aged 30 and onwards From the age of 30 onwards the gland tissue in the breast changes and it becomes more fibrous and nodular. The way the breast feels has been described as like a scaled down packet of frozen peas and occasionally, in just the same way that frozen peas can stick together to form a clump, so breast tissue can “stick together” to form definite nodular areas. These areas are also often tender but, once again, are not a sign of cancer. The rate of breast cancer begins to rise after the age of 40 and increases with age. Of course, breast cancer can occur at any age and I have seen cases in women as young as 19 and in their early 20s, but they are very, very rare. The important message is, if you notice a change in your breast please get it checked. Let’s go through what you need to do. The first thing to do is to see your GP and explain what you have noticed. They will examine you and in some cases may suggest a further check at a different time of your menstrual cycle. Some of the nodular areas can change with the cycle and this is actually a reassuring sign. If a discrete nodular area persists or your GP finds a definite lump, or is unsure, they will refer you to a breast clinic for a full assessment by the breast team. The team should consist of several consultants working together, and includes a surgeon a radiologist and a pathologist. The investigation of any breast problem revolves around, what is called, the triple assessment. It is like doing a jigsaw puzzle; pieces (of information) are collected and put together until the whole picture (the diagnosis) becomes clear. Indeed, this is often termed “the diagnostic jigsaw”. In some cases only 2 pieces may be needed, in others 4, but 3 (the triple assessment) is most common. Let’s have a look at what the pieces are. The first specialist you meet will often be the breast surgeon. They will ask questions about your symptoms (called taking your “history”). They will also ask about previous medical problems and your family history. They will then examine both breasts. How the breast feels when it is examined is the 6 8 J A N U A RY 2 0 1 4
first part of the jigsaw. If there is a definite area of change then a fine needle aspiration may be carried out. This test uses a normal sized syringe and needle. The needle is placed into the area of the breast and “jiggled” so that a small amount of material is sucked into the syringe. This is sent away to be looked at under the microscope. More commonly now a test known as a core biopsy is done. A core biopsy takes a core of breast tissue about 1.5 cm long and 2 mm in diameter. The core biopsy is carried out by first putting some local anaesthetic into the skin of the breast. Once this has worked (it is quite quick) a small nick is made in the skin to allow the core biopsy needle, attached to the biopsy “gun”, to be placed into the breast. When the “gun” is “fired” (it is painless, but does make a noise rather like a large stapler) the needle takes the sample. This is often repeated a few times. The appearance of the cells that have been removed with a fine needle aspiration, or the result of the core biopsy, is the second part of the jigsaw. The final part of the triple assessment involves taking images of the breast. In ladies under 35 an ultrasound scan is the commonest way of doing this. In ladies over 35 they will have a mammogram as well. Full field digital mammograms are the most sensitive type available at the moment. What an area of the breast looks like on a mammogram or an ultrasound scan is the third piece of the jigsaw. If the triple assessment produces the same answer at each stage the result is said to be concordant and no further tests may be needed. For example, a lump in a 30 year old lady may feel like a fibroadenoma, look like one on an ultrasound scan and a core biopsy shows pieces of a fibroadenoma. An important part of the triple assessment that is not commonly mentioned is to watch how things change (or not) with time. It would not be unusual to check things a few months later, repeating some, or all, of the assessment to make sure nothing has changed. A thorough triple assessment may actually be a quadruple assessment! Once again it should be emphasised that in the majority of cases a triple assessment (or a quadruple one) will reveal that cancer is not present. Most symptoms are age related changes or benign lumps. However, it is important that any new change is thoroughly investigated by a specialist to make absolutely sure that all is well.

Here is our guide to eating the right foods and restore your healthy wellbeing... Lemon Lemons are a staple of many detox diets, and there is good reason for this. Firstly, lemons are packed with antioxidant vitamin C, which is great for the skin and for fighting disease-forming free-radicals. Furthermore, the citrus fruit has an alkaline effect on the body, meaning that it can help restore the body’s pH balance, benefitting the immune system. Try starting your day with hot water and a slice of lemon to help flush out toxins and cleanse your system.

Ginger If too much fatty food or alcohol has caused problems for your digestive system, it may be worthwhile adding some ginger to your diet. Ginger is not only great for reducing feelings of nausea, but it can help improve digestion, beat bloating and reduce gas. In addition to this, ginger is high in antioxidants and is good for boosting the immune system. To give your digestion a helping hand, try sipping on ginger tea or adding some freshly grated ginger to a fruit or vegetable juice.

Garlic Garlic has long been known for its heart benefits, however the pungent food is also good at detoxifying the body. Garlic is not only antiviral, antibacterial and antibiotic, but it contains a chemical called allicin which promotes the production of white blood cells and helps fight against toxins. Garlic is best eaten raw, so add some crushed garlic to a salad dressing to boost its flavour and your health at the same time.
Cabbage Many celebs have resorted to the cabbage soup diet to help lose weight and get in shape quickly before a big event, however cabbage is not only good for weight loss - it is also an excellent detoxifying food. Like most cruciferous vegetables (including broccoli and sprouts), cabbage contains a chemical called sulforaphane, which helps the body fight against toxins. Cabbage also supplies the body with glutathione; an antioxidant that helps improve the detoxifying function of the liver.
Artichoke If you have recently been overindulging in fatty foods and alcohol, adding some steamed globe artichoke leaves to your meals is a great way to help get your body back on track. Globe artichokes are packed with antioxidants and fibre and can also help the body digest fatty foods. On top of this, globe artichoke is renowned for its ability to stimulate and improve the functions of the liver - the body’s main toxin-fighting tool.
Fresh fruit Fresh fruits are high in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fibre= and are also low in calories, making them an important part of a detox diet. If you’re after brighter eyes and skin, shinier hair and improved digestion, try boosting your intake of fruit and eating from a wide variety of different kinds. The good news is fruit is easy to add to your diet, so try starting your day with a fresh fruit salad or smoothie and snacking on pieces of fruit throughout the day.
Beetroot For those needing a quick health-boosting shot of nutrients, you can’t do much better than beetroot. Packed with magnesium, iron, and vitamin C, the vegetable has recently been hailed as a superfood due to its many reported health benefits. Not only is beetroot great for skin, hair and cholesterol levels, but it can also help support liver detoxification, making it an ultimate detox food. To enjoy its benefits, try adding raw beetroot to salads or sipping on some beetroot juice.
Brown rice If you want to cleanse your system and boost your health, it is a good idea to cut down on processed foods. Instead, try supplementing your diet with healthier whole grains such as brown rice, which is rich in many key detoxifying nutrients including B vitamins, magnesium, manganese and phosphorous. Brown rice is also high in fibre, which is good for cleansing the colon, and rich in selenium, which can help to protect the liver as well as improving the complexion.
Green tea While it’s not technically a food, no detox plan would be complete without regular consumption of essential liquids. Fluids are essential for keeping our organs healthy and helping to flush toxins from the body, and drinking green tea is a great way of boosting your intake. Green tea is not only a good weight-loss drink, but it is extremely high in antioxidants. Research has also suggested that drinking green tea can protect the liver from diseases including fatty liver disease.
Watercress Like most green herbs and vegetables, watercress is an excellent health-booster and detox food. Firstly, watercress leaves are packed with many vital detoxifying nutrients, including several B vitamins, zinc, potassium, vitamin E and vitamin C. Secondly, watercress has natural diuretic properties, which can help to flush toxins out the body. To reap the benefits of this nutritious food, try adding a handful of watercress to salads, soups and sandwiches.

INTRODUCING PHYSICALWELLBEING CELEBRITY TRAINER
GARY OUSBY SPECIALIST IN BODY TRANSFORMATION
Ever wondered how A-listers look so good all of the time? …Well, wonder no longer! Gary Ousby has been a Health and Fitness Consultant for over twenty years, having worked with clients from the film, music and sportsworld, including England and Arsenal Football Clubs. Over the years, Gary has perfected The Ultimate Precision Body Transformation Programme, which is ideally based on a 3-month programme that will completely transform your body shape and function. However, Gary has devised a 6-week rapid weight-loss programme that will create significant results or alternatively, the intensive 2-week programme will ensure you get the building blocks in place to achieve the body you crave.
So how does it work and why does this program stand head and shoulders above the rest? Gary uses a unique sport science-based approach that is exclusively customised to your body composition and physiological DNA to ensure success, even where previous attempts may have failed. The start-point is an InBody Scan, which takes segmental analysis of your fat, metabolic rate, muscle imbalances and so much more. This is the first step on the road to discovering exactly what is happening beneath the surface of your body. Next, a DNA (saliva) swab will be sent off to the laboratory to determine what vitamins and minerals you are lacking, what foods you should be eating and most importantly the foods you need to stay away from to lose and maintain your weight. A breath analysis will then be taken to determine the exact state of your physical fitness and assess whether you have any cardiac related issues. This will provide the scientific information needed to customise the Ultimate Precision Programme for you, which will be made available for you to take away once your programme has finished. Gary’s food company will then take this information and design a food plan for you that is freshly cooked every day and delivered directly to your door every morning. The food is delicious, ethically sourced, organic and its’ calorie content is carefully calculated based on your metabolic rate. One of the Physical Wellbeing Sports Scientists will then meet with you to give you a toxicity test to understand the level of toxins in your body. You may be aware that high levels of toxicity increases your risk of cancer, and inhibits your body from functioning at its optimum level, which may be another reason why you’ve been unable to lose weight in the past. You will be measured again at the end of the programme, or at six week intervals to measure your progress. You will begin your fitness programme by meeting Gary or a member of his team at least three times a week for an hour and fifteen minutes per session at The Mayfair Gym, or at an approved location more convenient to you. You will wear specially-designed exercise suits, typically worn by athletes who need to 8 0 J A N U A RY 2 0 1 4
achieve their target weight in order to compete. These suits will rapidly enhance the weight-loss process. The training plan uses the most cutting edge exercise in sports science to achieve the fastest results. As you can imagine the training is intensive, so a physiotherapy stretching programme will be used after every session to make sure no injuries occur. Gary will closely monitor your progress using the InBody Analyser, and will use this information to adapt the programme to ensure the fastest possible results. Most excitingly, Gary has recently introduced the Life Pack, which is a combination of supplements that mimic your DNA and can turn back your body clock twenty years! It will help your body to function at its optimum level and most importantly keep you at this level for years to come, even after you’ve reduced the intensity of your exercise and are not on such a rigid food diet. Currently, the American Olympic team are using these supplements, which demonstrates how effective (and well regulated) they are! The Ultimate Precision Programme has taken years to perfect and anticipates every conceivable barrier encountered during the process of body transformation.

& TREATMENT FOR VARICOSE VEINS
H E A LT H & B E AU T Y
h ealt h beau ty
LEADING CONSULTANT VASCULAR SURGEON MICHAEL GAUNT OPENS A NEW PRACTICE AT THE LONDON CLINIC IN HARLEY STREET AND DISCUSSES THE TREATMENT OF VARICOSE AND THREAD VEINS… WHAT ARE VARICOSE VEINS? Varicose veins are a common problem affecting at least 20% of the adult population in the UK. ey occur when small valves inside the veins stop functioning correctly. Rather than blood flowing effortlessly back towards the heart, the blood stagnates within the veins causing aching,
Michael Gaunt tiredness and discomfort. At first, problem veins may not be visible but symptoms occur. Sometimes patches of blue thread veins may be the earliest signs of an underlying problem. Eventually, the abnormal veins may become swollen, enlarged and varicose. is condition can be embarrassing and painful. Varicose veins are usually blue or dark purple in colour and may also be lumpy or twisted in appearance. While any vein can be affected, varicose veins most commonly develop in the legs and feet – predominantly because standing and walking can put pressure on the veins in the lower body. WHY SHOULD I CONSIDER HAVING THEM TREATED? In the developing stages, varicose veins and thread veins may be primarily a cosmetic problem. However, if ignored, the condition can deteriorate and a variety of complications can occur such as leg swelling, pigmentation of the skin around the ankles and ulcers. Occasionally, veins can burst causing bleeding, or the blood within the veins can clot leading to the painful condition of phlebitis or even deep vein thrombosis. People who use air travel for work or holidays may be at increased risk particularly if those flights are long haul. IS THIS TREATMENT JUST FOR WOMEN? Certainly not, it can affect men just as much as it can affect women. Men tend to cover their legs up more, so the problem may be hidden away and ignored, with some men only seeking treatment when their veins become swollen and complications start to occur. It is important to target varicose veins before they become a problem, as without medical treatment some conditions may worsen. WHAT IS INVOLVED IN TREATMENT AND IS IT PAINFUL? Fortunately, modern, minimally invasive treatments can often be MR BYE 2R021041 3 8 328 J D A ENCUEA
performed under local anaesthetic as a walk-in, walk-out procedure. is leaves the patient with minimal postoperative pain with practically immediate return to normal activity. Michael Gaunt is a leading venous expert and has extensive knowledge of these procedures, having treated over 4,000 patients with the Endovenous Laser and ClariVein techniques. Both techniques are associated with considerably less pain, bruising and scarring than traditional stripping techniques. IS IT PERMANENT? Most modern techniques for treating varicose veins are associated with very good, long-term results. Patients are benefiting more and more from the advances in the treatments and the new procedures that are now available. HOW CAN I GET MY THREAD VEINS TREATED? Not all visible veins in the legs are varicose veins. Small veins underneath the skin, known as thread veins, spider veins or reticular veins, may become prominent due to a variety of different reasons. ey can cause symptoms of discomfort, itching and irritation as well as being unsightly. Often the appearance of thread veins is due to the effect of daily wear and tear on delicate skin and local treatments are effective. However, sometimes thread veins are an indication of underlying varicose veins which may not be visible on examination. Treatment of the thread veins will not be successful unless the underlying problem - for example the varicose veins - has been corrected first. erefore, a thorough venous assessment is necessary before initiating any local treatment for thread veins. is could include injection microsclerotherapy or VeinWave therapy. Once underlying varicose veins have been treated or excluded, local treatment of the thread veins is much more likely to be successful. VeinWave therapy is also very effective at removing unsightly facial red veins affecting the nose and cheeks. ONCE I’VE DECIDED TO HAVE TREATMENT, WHAT IS THE NEXT STEP? Make an appointment where we can assess your condition and discuss potential treatment and steps forward. ese no obligation consultations are offered at e London Clinic in Harley Street. If you would like to book a mini-consultation, including an ultrasound scan, for just £95, or if you would like to find out more about your treatment options call 01223 305858 or visit www.michaelgaunt.com ■

ince establishing the practice in 1991, a holistic design approach and a wealth of experience among Gregory and his team has led to the successful delivery of a wide range of residential projects from extension and refurbishment to new build dwellings, basements and swimming pools across London and the UK. While every project is unique; tailored to each clients’ lifestyle, aspirations and specific locations, a common thread is the exceptional quality and attention to detail which permeates the work and resulting homes. Throughout their portfolio of work, a balanced composition of spaces and relationship between inside and out is most evident and appealing – certainly to those wishing to create modern, contemporary environments full of clean lines and natural light. In conjunction with developing new layouts and creating new spaces, Gregory and his team are often engaged to carry out the interior design and selection of furniture and soft furnishings. This approach yields an integrated response to the client’s aspirations and an aesthetic which reflects the vision of the architecture. By engaging in a collaborative process, it is Gregory and his team’s aim to make designing and constructing their clients’ new homes and environments an enjoyable and rewarding experience. It seems that this approach yields great results for both the client and the practice with many of the projects going on to win prestigious awards from the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and publications such as Homes & Gardens and Sunday Times British Homes Awards. Clients are assured that these elements are incorporated into the designs at an early stage in a fresh and innovative way. With a significant portfolio of completed works behind them, current projects include an exciting new build dwelling in Shropshire which has just received planning permission, and a number of basement, extension and refurbishment projects on site across London in St Johns Wood, Hampstead, Holland Park, Chiswick and Wimbledon. First class cut glass N ot so much from a health point but because loosened tongues allowed indiscretions which resulted in blackmail by waiting-on staff. Part of the problem was Service a la Francaise wherein there were nearly as many servants as guests. The solution was an option to stop drinking so much or dispense with the staff as soon as the food had been delivered to the dining room. Obviously it was no race and from the 1750’s on we see the introduction of serve-yourself wining and dining accessories, many of which we use and take for granted today. Cupboards with metal lings to keep things hot or cold, - a sort of Chippendale Hostess Trolley idea - cheese trolleys which could be wheeled up and down the table, wine labels to identify the contents of decanters which now stood in decanter stands to protect the table and its cloth, and a small three-tiered table on tripod base with castors which held additional cutlery, napery and small plates. 9 0 J A N U A RY 2 0 1 4
By the middle of the 18th century excessive drinking at the dinner table, particularly by the young and affluent, had become a serious problem.
This could be passed behind the guests like a mute servant and was called a Dumbwaiter. An invention of the time. In all there are 32 different antique accessories connected with wine drinking that stem from this period. Some are more practical today and therefore more popular than others among which is the decanter. The latter half of the 18th century saw the development of the domestic glass industry in Britain and decanters reflect this in their shape, style and decoration. It seems hard to believe that an 18th century decanter, with all its character and history can be less expensive than a new one. And you never know, the antique one you are holding might have been held by a famous person, so buy one to start the New Year and ‘Bottoms Up’ I say. arshall & Stewart beds are synonymous with luxury, handmade in the UK by experienced craftsmen. Their workshops have been making beds for over a hundred years and they are constantly striving to improve their beds in line with sleep research and customer needs. This meticulous attention to detail has now been extended to bedroom furniture and accessories following an exclusive partnership with Simon Horn, London.
can choose from an extensive selection of bed legs and fabrics, or are welcome to provide a fabric of their choosing which can be used on the divan and headboard.
Over 40 years ago Simon Horn introduced the ‘lit bâteau’ to the UK and set the ball rolling for a successful revival of French period bed frames. Since then the company has maintained its enviable reputation for the innovation of classic and contemporary styles.
Every Marshall & Stewart bed can be created to the individual tension required by the customer, and the bed can even be dual tension ensuring it is tailor-made for the comfort of both people sleeping in it. The progressive spring system is surrounded by nature’s finest materials – layers of the softest cotton, luxurious blends of lambswool and cashmere and vast clouds of hand teased loose horsehair, and each Marshall & Stewart bed comes with a 25-year guarantee.
Simon Horn’s flagship showroom located on the stylish Kings Road is set on two floors, is a wonderfully light and airy space, combining polished concrete floors with bleached oak boards and is the only showroom in the UK displaying every model of Marshall & Stewart bed and every available tension. This breath taking showroom is managed by Marshall & Stewart owner and sleep expert Brent Cooper. Brent said ‘partnering with Simon Horn has bridged the gap between style and comfort and Simon Horn customers can now get not only the look they desire, but also the level of restorative sleep they require’. A Marshall & Stewart bed combined with sumptuous bedding makes for the most comfortable night’s sleep, providing superior comfort and unmatched luxury and while its comfort is paramount, its linens and overall aesthetic are also an important factor. Within the Simon Horn showroom, furniture and beds are accessorised with original vintage pieces specially selected for the store: softest cashmere throws, rich silk curtains and cushions. The walls are hung with modern art and beautiful limited edition photography. A complimentary in-store design service is provided at which clients
Brent and his team are also on hand to offer customers a personal bed consultation, ensuring the correct model and tension is chosen – making the third of a person’s life spent in bed as comfortable as possible.
Choosing a Simon Horn bed frame proves you have good taste and style, and selecting a hand made all natural Marshall & Stewart bed set makes it clear that you are just as serious about your sleep. Brent added ‘an investment in a quality bed will repay you with a sense of well-being you never thought possible. Quality, restorative, invigorating sleep is only achievable when you apply the same consideration you would give to exercise and eating fresh healthy food. Sleep is crucial for the body to operate effectively and at its best’. To book a complimentary bed consultation or for more information, visit www.marshallandstewart.com. CHELSEA FABRICS Chelsea Fabrics was established twenty years ago as producers and wholesale suppliers of Curtain and Upholstery fabrics.
A
t that time the most popular fabrics were printed designs and the Company sold its own exclusive designs not only to numerous shops and stores in the UK but exported to markets as diverse as Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, the UAE and Scandinavia amongst many others.
About three years later, the company set up a showroom in Fulham, West London, which included a retail department named The Curtain Fabric Factory, to sell its discontinued designs direct to the public at greatly discounted prices. Over the next decade, demand for prints diminished and plains and textures almost entirely took over the market. Such was the demand for discounted fabrics in the retail shop, that more emphasis was placed in that area and the offer was greatly expanded. Making excellent use of the contacts that the company had established overseas enabled a huge selection of fabrics to be sourced from the best Mills Worldwide, cutting out the middle man and offered at very keen prices. Other products and services were gradually introduced, including curtain tracks and poles of every description, including electric, remote controlled systems, Roman, Roller, Venetian and Vertical blinds, again including motorised systems, all fitted by the Companies expert fitters. Also a recently introduced upholstery service to compliment the huge range of upholstery fabrics on offer, all discounted of course. Over the years, the ranges of fabrics have been increased expedentialy, to 9 4 J A N U A RY 2 0 1 4
the extent that the choice of colours, styles, qualities and effects, is probably the largest in West London. There are dozens of different types of plains and semi plains, ranging from pure silks to velvets, traditional florals to the latest themes in abstracts, jacquards, embroideries, satins, designs with horses, designs with maps, butterflies, flowers of every description, trees, animal skins, the list is virtually endless. And for clients who cant find their perfect choice in stock, there are thousands of samples from the Worlds leading Mills to browse through. The only criticism and one often repeated, is that the choice is too large ! But to help with this expert staff are on hand to advise with a no pressure, one to one service. It is no accident that a large percentage of customers are repeat ones or have been personally recommended. The stores somewhat unlikely location is in the middle of North End Road, Fulham at the junction with Lillie Road, just along from the famous fruit and vegetable market and within a short walk from West Kensington, Fulham Broadway and West Brompton Road tube stations or easy pay & display parking around he corner. The narrow entrance belies the 5,000 square feet of space crammed full of stock to which it opens up. If there was such a thing as a “Fabric Tardis this is certainly it, and well worth a visit. ur showroom is based in Wandsworth, South West London. We have been established for over 40 years and our nationwide client base has grown due to our skilled and professional service. With a wealth of knowledge and over forty years of experience, we provide quality work for all our customers. We cater for homeowners, builders and architects. We are committed to the restoration and preservation of architectural features, combining traditional craftsmanship and modern techniques and materials to reproduce original features such as cornices, ceiling centres and corbels in precise detail and to an exceptionally high quality. Robert Adam, the 18th century designer and Architect, introduced cornice, Fibrous plasterwork or ornate mouldings into Great Britain. He incorporated into his ceiling decorations, plaster reliefs. He would then repeat these motifs in the furnishings, carpets and woodwork. The plaster reliefs formed no function except to embellish and beautify. Much the same as they do, today. There is an immense amount of ornate plasterwork in Great Britain in many different styles, from the finest town and country houses to 19th century railway cottages in Waterloo. London. Over the passage of time the ornate plaster mouldings has been destroyed, damaged, heavily painted or just ripped out because it became unfashionable. Our extensive knowledge and empathy with various eras of interior decor enables us to match any classical feature with great accuracy. We take pride in the competitive prices we offer so you can rely on us to restore your property cleanly and efficiently. Interior Mouldings Broseley London and the Classic Cornice Co. have collaborated on many projects over the last 30 years. Their project in Earls Court Sq. was both challenging and rewarding.

PART OF THE NEW CEILING
The ceiling in the main reception needed to be replaced, which meant that all the original ornate mouldings, would need to be replaced. The mouldings were removed and catalogued. Taken into the workshop to be cleaned, reproduced and then returned to the house to be installed. The result was a stunning ceiling, restored to its former glory. Exterior mouldings As the Company has grown we have been asked if the expertise we bring to the internal mouldings can be transferred to the exterior. With the introduction of a product called Jesmonite, a resin-bonded cement with have been able to adapt our skills and knowledge to produce high quality finishes to exteriors. The Advantage Basement Co. commissioned us to reproduce the external mouldings to the façade of the property in Richmond (below) to match the external mouldings next door. The Richmond Society’s top award of a brass plaque was presented for the transformation of this property in Richmond. They said, ‘The replacement of a 1950s semi, which itself was an infill resulting from bombing during the Second War, with a carefully designed reconstruction of a 19th century villa, completely in keeping with the existing historic townscape and being of the highest build quality. The judging panel had been particularly impressed with the care and consideration taken to reproduce the character and detail of the neighbouring villa.’ The Richmond Society Quarterly Newsletter, Winter 2013. Our company offers a full range of expertise from manufacturing the ornate plasterwork to the installation both externally and internally. Stairway to Heaven T
oday, flatweave runners are considered the smart way to finish halls and stairs. Whether an explosion of colour, or simple, sophisticated texture a runner will create a lasting impression. But it wasn’t always the way. Simple flatweave runners - a precursor to pile carpets that were popular in the early 19th century -were originally used to protect better quality carpets in grand country houses. When Roger Oates and his wife Fay began weaving in the Eighties flatweaving had all but been phased out in the UK. It was when they were asked to reproduce a nineteenth century flatweave fragment that their interest was piqued and they became determined to reintroduce this historic textile as a new decorative floorcovering. They discovered that flatweave carpets are ideally suited to staircases as the technique produces a textile that is similar in flexibility to upholstery fabric and can be fitted on almost any winder or turn. The clean edge finish also means that they can be joined to create highly distinctive area rugs and wall-to-wall carpets. Over the past 25 years Roger and Fay have turned runners into an art form. Their collection comprises over 100 stripe designs - everything from classic fine lines to bold, broad, bands. Several designs have a

border that is ideal for stairs with a complementary all over pattern for fitted carpets in halls and in landings. New designs are often inspired by old ones to maintain the ‘handwriting’ of the company. The connection between the old and the new is a large part of what characterizes the design and lends them a timeless quality. However, Roger and Fay are also inspired by travel, theatre, art and fashion – in their studio sketches are pinned up next to pages torn from travel, nature and fashion magazines and colour swatches. Roger Oates’ new collection of flatweave rugs and runners uses a British Cheviot Wool blend yarn created specially for these flatweave flooring designs. Through experimentation and development with English wool merchants and yarn spinners, a thread has been spun which not only provides good spring but also allows the clear bright colours of the designs to sing through. he new home, which replaces an existing home has been designed with respect for it’s surroundings. The new design steps down with the fall of the site and uses the level change in conjunction with the modularisation of the house to create intimate internal areas which echo the topographical context of the site. The design by Nicolas Tye Architects features white render, timber louvres and elegant glazing systems that encourage to blur the division between inside and out. Careful consideration was given to the choice of construction materials, using locally sourced materials, the architects also went as far as specifying natural paints and stains, both internally and externally. In keeping with it’s design philosophy, heat pumps, rainwater harvesting and grey water recycling systems were also specified to provide an energy efficient and environmentally friendly scheme. This exquisite building of high quality design and architecture has been created to form a fresh, modern single dwelling what respects the nature of the area and brings a coherent layout integrated with the site while presenting a modern yet timeless design concept.
