Welcome to our July issue... Andy Murray defeats Novak Djokovic 6-4, 7-5, 6-4. The frenzied scenes witnessed during the 2012 Olympics last year were a once in a lifetime….or so we thought. It took just 11 months and Britain made sporting history at Wimbledon. An immense silence engulfed the Centre Court on Sunday 7th July. Three agonising Championship points had escaped Murray’s grasp, and now he had earned a fourth by rescuing a rally. He did not know it, but this was his time. No Briton had won the men’s Wimbledon title since Fred Perry in 1936. This summer you can enjoy a host of packages including Champagne and canapés, Wine and Tapas and the Night Cap with bespoke gin cocktails made by Sipsmith artisan distillers, to bring out the late night side of London. Sipsmith has devised four London influenced cocktails to enjoy on one of the special capsules including The London 75 with dry Gin, fresh lemon juice and Pommery Brut Royal Champagne and the London Negroni with London Dry Gin, Sipsmith Summer Cup and Campari, served with lemonade and seasoned fruits. The summery flavours perfectly compliment the spectacular London views aboard the London Eye. On Wednesday 12th June 2013, Chanel opened a new London flagship boutique at 158-159 New Bond Street, in the heart of Mayfair. This 12,600 square-foot boutique showcases the universe created by Karl Lagerfeld. The interior has been conceived by New York based architect Peter Marino who is renowned for his ability to re-interpret the aesthetic codes which embody the brand in the design of CHANEL boutiques worldwide. Peter Marino has embraced the inherent elegance, audacity and refinement of the legendary House with a timeless panache creating an exclusive, intimate and glamorous environment.

FILM4 SUMMER SCREEN AT SOMERSET HOUSE WITH AMERICAN EXPRESS ®
S
8th – 21st AUGUST 2013
omerset House stages London’s best-loved open-air cinema, Film4 Summer Screen this August with an extended programme of 14 nights of films, featuring classics, comedy, romance and thrillers, presented in the magnificent 18th century courtyard on a giant 17 x 8 metre screen with full surround sound. With early evening DJ sessions, food and drink and special live introductions to selected films, Film4 Summer Screen is the ultimate cinema experience and a highlight of the summer calendar. Tina Fey, Marlon Brando and Robert de Niro are some of the names who will grace the big screen this year, with season highlights including: MEAN GIRLS
A brash black-comedy written by Tina Fey that follows the teenage trials of Lindsay Lohan as she negotiates the clique-ridden world of the classroom. With bullying and backbiting making life a misery for those not amongst the chosen few, Lohan sets out to bring down the girls who think they rule the school. Swift and savage, with some of the sharpest gags in teen-movie history.
KES
Director Ken Loach’s unforgettable debut from 1969 follows the story of a young Barnsley boy who secretly keeps and trains a kestrel, the bird’s flight providing an inspiring symbol of escape amidst oppressive surroundings. A beautiful film now routinely considered to be a British classic, this is an intimate, human-scale film that really soars on the big-screen.
GUYS AND DOLLS
A bright and romantic musical classic, which splashes sensational Broadway style and swagger across the big-screen as it makes its way from a stylised New York to the swirling, seductive backdrop of Havana. Frank Sinatra, Marlon Brando and Jean Simmons are the stars of this streetwise favourite, with the sing-along set-pieces ranging from show-stopping group numbers to intimate torch songs.
THE UNTOUCHABLES
Thrilling action in a classical style – Brian De Palma’s tale of G-men versus gangsters in Prohibition-era Chicago reinvents the mobster movie for a modern

audience while retaining some old-school elegance. Robert DeNiro, Kevin Costner and an Oscar-winning Sean Connery provide the acting muscle, while Ennio Morricone’s score propels the viewer through to that memorable final showdown on the train station steps.
The full programme will be announced in May. For the third year running, American Express’ partnership with Film4 Summer Screen at Somerset House enables Cardmembers to benefit from presale and reserved tickets to all shows. Summer Screen Prints Exhibition To coincide with this year’s screenings, Somerset House and Film4 have teamed up with Dalston studios Print Club London to curate a one-off poster exhibition in the newly opened West Wing Galleries. Working with some of the biggest and best illustrators from the UK and USA, they will design and produce 17 new, original silk screen prints inspired by the roster of films screened at Film4 Summer Screen with American Express this year. Some of the illustrators include Kate Gibb (creator of Chemical Brothers album artwork), Anthony Burrill, Olly Moss (who recently designed a new set of Star Wars trilogy posters), James Joyce and Michael Gillette as well as newcomers Hattie Stewart and Serge Seidlitz. The prints will be editions of 200, each signed by the artist and for sale at £40. Somerset House is a spectacular neo-classical building in the heart of London, sitting between the Strand and the River Thames. Since opening to the public in 2000, Somerset House has produced a distinctive public programme that annually draws over 2.5 million visitors to the site, providing a stimulating environment for exploration and relaxation. The varied, year-round programme includes an open air film and concert season and ice rink, as well as temporary exhibitions focusing on contemporary fashion, design, art and architecture, family workshops and free guided tours. In September 2009, Somerset House became the new home of London Fashion Week. For more info visit somersethouse.org.uk

Summer Streets on Regent Street Celebrate a different view of London’s West End with four traffic-free Sundays
R
egent Street, London W1 is to become traffic-free every Sunday throughout July as part of the “Summer Streets” programme – the first of its kind in the UK – in partnership with the Mayor of London. Each Sunday, people can experience London’s iconic Regent Street as a traffic-free destination. Visitors will be able to relax and enjoy a creative programme of performances, fashion and installations, and participate in free exercise classes, games and sensory experiences. Summer Streets will make the area a more pleasant experience for residents and visitors alike, enhancing the environment for shoppers and sightseers to enjoy this central location in the heart of the West End. Originally inspired by ideas in the Mayor’s Air Quality Strategy and a similar initiative in New York City, Summer Streets will encourage shoppers to experience London’s finest retail venues in a different way. It will make the most of the international flagship fashion stores located on Regent Street, creating a fun showcase for the shopping experience every Sunday, when they will be able to enjoy the open space, relaxed atmosphere and cleaner air. Each weekend, visitors can enjoy and join in with the following activities: Join in on street free exercise classes on the first three Sundays at mid day run by The Third Space Soho. On Sunday 21st, visitors can dress up in their favourite outfit and walk the Regent Street catwalk, or bring their children for an architectural treasure hunt (booking essential via the event’s website) and on Sunday 28th July, relax in the Gardens of Regent Street when the street will become London’s innermost green space with flower stalls, gardening tips and bee keeping. The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, said: “Summer Streets is a fabulous way to experience one of the country’s finest retail destinations every Sunday in July. With its exceptional Nash design few areas can rival the rich history of Regent Street. We want to make shopping in the flagship stores and eating in the nearby restaurants even more enjoyable, turning a visit to this world-

renowned street in to the ultimate summer shopping treat.” With the street free from traffic and open to all, visitors can make the most of their visit by downloading the free Regent Street Walking Tour iPhone app from the App Store, which takes users on a step-by-step guide of the famous architectural and historic features of the street. If shopping is high on their agenda, visitors can also download the free Regent Street Shopping & Lifestyle iPhone app. Annie Walker, Director of the Regent Street Association, said: “Summer Streets provides a unique opportunity for pedestrians to experience Regent Street at its best, with its wide, open spaces and beautiful architecture. With over 75 flagship stores to explore, people can make the most of their time shopping with four consecutive traffic-free Sundays.” Regent Street provides a world class shopping experience and has many promotional initiatives in place, including the Regent Street gift card that is accepted in over 135 stores, hotels and restaurants, including the two Food Quarters, Heddon Street and Swallow Street. Regent Street’s Shopping App helps shoppers navigate the area, showcasing the street’s diverse shopping, fashion and lifestyle offer, as well as the Regent Street Walking Tour app, which gives users a fascinating guide to the renowned architecture of the famous curve. The newest service launched by Regent Street is ‘Hands-Free Shopping’ which allows customers to shop and have their bags delivered home or to their hotel for a flat fee of £30, within designated postcodes, allowing customers the freedom to make the most of their trip. facebook.com/RegentStreetOfficial twitter.com/RegentStOnline instagram.com/RegentStreetOfficial

Notting Hill to France and Spain
only 72 miles by car!
Notting Hill
Gateway to the continent and beyond
There’s a great range of routes on offer this summer from Portsmouth International Port - destinations in France and Spain that are really close to holiday hot spots, beautiful coastlines, and famous attractions. Brittany Ferries has a choice of routes to suit everyone; whether you want to relax on the beach, explore forests and mountains, or opt for a city break. Family camping holidays, first class hotels, or holiday rental properties are all just a short drive away. And by travelling in your own car you can even take the family pet on holiday with you too!
Pack your car and go
We all hope for a hassle free holiday, but who can really say that stress levels fall with a journey that begins at the airport? Baggage restrictions, charges to check in, a fight to get seats together – it’s not the perfect start to a getaway. The simple solution this summer is to put exactly what you want in your own car, and head to Portsmouth International Port. The Hindhead Tunnel makes the journey even quicker and easier than ever before – a gentle cruise down the A3 to Britain’s best-connected Port.
A calm getaway
Once you’ve arrived at Portsmouth International Port the holiday really starts. A new, modern terminal awaits – a stunning and spacious glass and steel masterpiece. Designed to promote calm, it’s also one of the most environmentally friendly public buildings in the country. Inside you’ll find a cafe with wonderful views of the harbour. There is also a shop, bureau de change, and all the other essential services you’d expect from a first class facility at an international travel gateway.
Luxurious cruise ferries
More like ocean-going cruise liners than cross channel ferries, the Brittany Ferries fleet will get you in the holiday mood. Onboard you’ll discover gourmet restaurants, cinemas, comfortable lounges, exclusive boutiques, family dining facilities and a range of luxury cabins to rest in. There’s the option of a “fast ferry” for those in a hurry, and two of the larger “cruise ferries” even have a swimming pool for passengers with more time to relax.

The Ham Polo Club Summer Party FRIDAY 26th JULY 2013
Ham Polo Club’s annual mid summer party will be taking place this year on Friday July 26th. The club holds a number of social functions throughout the year and this is the big one.
T
he event will take place at Ham’s beautiful clubhouse, set in between the two immaculate polo fields in Petersham near Richmond. Every year guests are treated to a full four course dinner with some elaborate dishes on the menu. Last year quail’s egg and smoked salmon scotch egg starters were served and when the party theme was ‘Alice in Wonderland’ the soup course had tiny hearts, clubs, spades and diamonds cut from carrots in it. At the start of the evening the polo crowd in their smartest black tie and evening wear will enjoy champagne and canapés in the clubhouse garden before moving through to sit down. The evening will of course include an auction after dinner; prizes will be up for grabs that you couldn’t usually get the opportunity to buy, many of them donated by the players themselves. Lessons with ’10 goalers’, unusual art and some trips to holiday villas in exotic locations will be amongst the list to bid on. Following dinner the clubhouse will erupt into full swing as the live band takes to the stage, Ham goes to great lengths to secure a top class act for this event and this year will be no different. As if this wont be enough entertainment there will even be a DJ set coming on after the band have exhausted themselves to keep the party going.
2 0 J U LY 2 0 1 3
The Ham midsummer party has become known throughout the polo world as one of the best shin digs to attend during the UK season. Most of the players disappear to warmer climates to follow the Argentine and US seasons as soon as the summer here finishes so this is a great opportunity to rub shoulders with this international crowd.
For information on tickets please contact the Ham Polo Office on 0208 334 0000. Tickets are £95 per person and will be limited this year. Head to www.hampoloclub.com for any further information on visiting the club on match days throughout the summer.

Deckchair Dreams Returns for Royal Parks Foundation’s 10th Anniversary The Royal Parks Foundation is celebrating 10 years of helping support the magic of London’s amazing Royal Parks with a stunning new collection of limited edition deckchairs. Ronnie Wood, Michael Craig Martin, Julia Bradbury and Miranda Richardson are among the luminaries supplying designs for the Bloomberg-sponsored Deckchair Dreams project, which has previously showcased work by Tracey Emin, Damien Hirst, Joanna Lumley and Alexander McQueen. This year’s collection, the fifth since 2006, will see 550 designer chairs grace the green spaces of five of London’s central Royal Parks. Almost 40 million Londoners and visitors enjoy exploring the eight Royal Parks each year. The Royal Parks are: Bushy Park, The Green Park, Greenwich Park, Hyde Park, Kensington Gardens, The Regent’s Park and Primrose Hill, Richmond Park and St James’s ParkBased on the theme of Nature’s Grand Designs, it features specially commissioned deckchairs by celebrities from the worlds of visual art, music, performing arts and design, who have drawn inspiration from the natural world. Bloomberg staff and local community groups have also had the opportunity to submit designs via a competition. Work from two local schools, an arts group and Age UK residents will all feature in the collection. This innovative public art adventure aims to bring art and design to the Parks’ visitors, and to raise awareness and funding for cultural, heritage, education and conservation projects across London’s eight Royal Parks. Since 2006, more than £250,000 has been raised via the sale of the designer deckchairs, helping to support a range of work from a fungus survey in Richmond Park to new swings for the Diana Playground in Kensington Gardens. Funds raised this year are intended to support the restoration of five children’s playgrounds and assist with smaller 2 4 J U LY 2 0 1 3
projects, such as bulb planting and habitat management. This year’s collection, which also includes designs by Harry Enfield, Martha Freud and Take That’s Howard Donald, will be out in Hyde Park, The Green Park, St James’s Park, Kensington Gardens and The Regent’s Park from July 4th until the end of October. Sara Lom, Chief Executive of the Royal Parks Foundation, said: “Deckchairs are such a wonderful British icon and a real feature of summer in the Royal Parks. We’ve received some wonderful interpretations of the theme - Nature’s Grand Designs - from this year’s artists, which will hopefully encourage visitors to think about the value of nature – as well as give them somewhere stylish to sit! We can’t wait to see the new designs out in the Parks.” This year’s designs are now available to view following the official launch earlier this month. For more information on Deckchair Dreams, or if you would like to buy a reproduction deckchair, please visit www.SupportTheRoyalParks.org About the Royal Parks Foundation The Royal Parks Foundation is the charity for London’s eight amazing Royal Parks. We reach out to make the Parks part of more people’s lives - raising funds for a wide variety of projects from wildlife conservation and landscape restoration, to community sport and art. The boutique also houses a selection of watches and Fine Jewellery as well as fragrance and beauty. The three floor space, which is articulated around a central atrium, is the latest luxury concept from Peter Marino. Using materials such

as soft gold and bronze and reflective surfaces like glass, marble, lacquer and mirror-glass, intriguing textures contrast the highly polished and architectural with the artisanal. Each floor comprises of a series of intimate areas with specially commissioned artworks and both contemporary and antique furniture feature throughout. Every artefact has been chosen to reflect the brand and Mademoiselle Chanel’s legacy as a passionate patron of the arts. Upon entering the boutique on the ground floor customers find a gallery inspired by the famed apartment at 31 rue Cambon and to the left of this an area dedicated to watches and an edited selection of Fine Jewellery. On the right one can find the latest statement accessories. Hand woven metallic white gold wall panels and quartz inlay floors create a luxurious and exceptional setting.

A ‘ribbon’ wall created from gold fabric inspired by Mademoiselle Chanel’s collection of Coromandel screens provides a beautiful showcase for handbags including the iconic 2:55, the latest editions of the Boy Chanel handbag and others from the most recent collections. Plaster wall panels by Marc Swanson and a bronze and leather box by Peter Marino underline the sense of the unique. The ground floor also houses costume jewellery, small leather goods and a wall dedicated to sunglasses. Two additional walls showcase scarfs and belts and a further selection of handbags are available in this area. Beauty ‘try – on’ counters furnished with upholstered highstools offer the full range of CHANEL fragrance and beauty products. The ascent to the first floor, by lift or by the marble staircase, delivers one to Ready-to-Wear and shoes. Decorated with an imposing antique fireplace, Jasper Morrison graphic marble display shelves as well as artworks by Karl Lagerfeld, Richard Deacon and Liza Lou amongst many more, the floor has a townhouse like intimacy. Selected pieces from the 2012-13 Métiers d’art Paris-Edimbourg collection, first presented at Linlithgow Palace, Scotland in December 2012, will take centre stage.
Artisanal Scottish knits and tweeds, fabrics that Mademoiselle Chanel embraced throughout her career, form the centrepiece of Karl Lagerfeld’s timely reinvention. Both Ready-to-Wear rooms have a series of exclusive try on salons and the expansive double shoe area has ample room to browse the latest collection. From the second floor, one is rewarded with a bird’s eye view of the atrium through which cascades a giant, twisting ‘pearlnecklace’ sculpture by renowned French artist, Jean-Michel Othoniel. The area is conceived as a gallery space with fine oils, rare prints, and sculpture on display and features antique Chinese carpets, consoles and burgundy lacquer walls reminiscent of Mademoiselle Chanel’s Rue Cambon apartment. Here, an intimate, third Ready-to-Wear space can be found. St James’s Concours of Elegance announces stellar line-up of cars 5th - 7th SEPTEMBER 2013 - ROYAL LAWNS OF ST JAMES’S, CENTRAL LONDON
L
ast year the Royal lawns of Windsor Castle, this year the Royal gardens of St James’s. Sixty rare motor cars are being lined up for the historic garden party of the year. In just one year, the UK’s Concours of Elegance has become one of the most talked about events in the international historic car calendar.
Organisers of the UK’s 2013 Concours of Elegance have announced its line-up of spectacular cars which will be on display at Marlborough House, in London’s historic St James’s, a 300-year-old Royal Palace adjacent to St James’s Palace and The Mall. With over 20 cars coming from the UK, 16 from Europe, 13 from the States and the rest from as far afield as Argentina, Mexico and Russia, many of these cars have never before been seen in public. Included in the line-up is the 1928 Bugatti Type 35B, winner of the first Monaco Grand Prix in 1929; the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL, the first super car of the post-war era, ordered by the “King of Hollywood” Clark Gable which he enjoyed until his death in 1960; and a 1954 Ferrari 375 MM Scaglietti once owned by Roberto Rossellini. Not to mention two World Speed Record holders and a number of other unique cars with notable histories both on and off the track. An extremely eclectic mix of rare cars, offering something for everyone. In keeping with the prestigious Central London address, the ambition is to ensure that the St James’s Concours of Elegance is a truly glamorous

occasion with the emphasis on style and elegance. Apart from being ‘the’ historic motoring social event of the year, it will have all the sophistication of a major social gathering. ‘A London happening’, a select group of guests from around the world. It is with great pleasure that Concours of Elegance can announce that HRH Prince Michael of Kent has agreed to become Patron of the Concours of Elegance. Prince Michael is a keen ‘hands on’ motoring enthusiast. As well as being President of The Royal Automobile Club and Patron of Benjafields Racing Club, His Royal Highness is also an Honorary Member of the Bentley Drivers’ Club and the British Racing Drivers’ Club, and will officially open the Concours as well as attending the event and meeting the owners and their guests. The very best in gourmet food and fine wine will be on offer in a specially constructed hospitality facility. The event aims to raise money for a number of charities working in the field of cancer care, support and research. Last year’s event raised in excess of £250,000 for charities, and for 2013, as part of the programme of Concours events, all Owners will be invited to a private gala dinner to celebrate our charity partnership and raise funds for our chosen cause. Any charitable donation will be gratefully received and will contribute significantly to the success of the St James’s Concours of Elegance. Provisions exist for making tax efficient donations both here and abroad.

The funds raised through the St. James’s Concours of Elegance will be granted to Marie Curie Cancer Care, Pilotlight, Rosetrees Trust, and Action on Bladder Cancer. The 2012 event raised over £250,000 for The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity, East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices, Marie Curie Cancer Care and Cancer Research UK. The ambitious target for 2013 is £500,000. Concours d’Elégance date from 17th century France where the aristocracy paraded their highly ornate horse-drawn carriages through the parks of Paris. In time the carriages became horseless and the gatherings became a competitive ‘beauty pageant’ for automobile owners. The success of a concours ultimately comes down to the excellence of the cars entered. The rarer and more significant the examples on show, the better the concours. A car’s history and provenance will not only make it more collectable but also make it more exciting to see on show. In reality a concours is an exhibition of priceless art. Automotive sculptures that stand as a lasting testament to the brilliance of pioneering engineers, innovative designers and skilled coachbuilders. Uniquely, as this is a British event, we are calling it a ‘Concours of Elegance’. For details of the prestigious cars on display and to purchase tickets in advance, please visit www.concoursofelegance.co.uk or by calling The Ticket Factory on 0844 338 8000.
Once again, Pullman Editions has designed the poster for this iconic Concours. Leading automotive poster artist, Charles Avalon, has depicted The Mall, London’s principal processionary route, embellished with ceremonial flags, with Buckingham Palace visible in the distance. To the fore are some of the stunning motor cars that will participate in the event, including the sublime 1932 Bugatti Type 50T Coupe Profilée leading the way. Pullman Editions designs, commissions and publishes striking original posters which capture the enduring appeal of Art Deco. Their exclusive editions portray the very essence of glamour from a bygone era, and reflect the call for stylish, decorative yet affordable Art Deco posters. After training in graphic design, Charles Avalon spent several years as an advertising agency art director before becoming a freelance illustrator working mainly on national and international advertising campaigns. He has always had a strong interest in Art Deco graphics and industrial design. Later, Charles decided to concentrate more on fine art, which he has been able to combine with his love of cars. Unlike many modern artists who work digitally, all of Avalon’s work is hand drawn and painted, mainly in gouache and sometimes acrylic. He is the principal house artist at Pullman Editions. The Angel of London Black Cabs
Hailo Black-Cab App
H
ailo is the world’s first black-cab app which allows users to hail a registered cab from their smartphone in just two taps. The app is available on iPhone and Android, and is The UK’s highest rated taxi app with over 10,000 5* reviews.
As taxis can be hailed straight from a user’s phone there is no need to stand on the street until a cab becomes available, and the quick and easy payment options mean customers can be dropped right at their door. This amazing app was counded 18 months ago by three London cabbies (Russell Hall, Gary Jackson and Terry Runham) and is now fully operational in London, Dublin, Cork, New York, Boston, Chicago, Toronto, Barcelona and Madrid with plans to launch in Tokyo in the near future.
The free app uses GPS to match the customer to their nearest available driver meaning you’re no longer left standing about on the streets waiting for a free taxi to pass by. There are no hidden charges – users still pay the same metered fare they always would – and Hailo’s secure payment system gives you the option to pay either by cash or card meaning there’s no need to worry about stopping off at an ATM midway through your journey. As well as being a handy piece of technology, the app also has significant safety benefits for women. As a black-cab service all Hailo drivers are independently registered and are required to display photographic identification in their vehicle, removing the unnecessary risk of unlicensed minicabs. 3 2 J U LY 2 0 1 3
Over 12,000 drivers are registered in London (half of all blackcab drivers in the city), with over 300,000 registered users in London alone (over half a million registered users worldwide)
A Londoner hails a Hailo cab every 7 seconds, with a typical arrival time is under 2 minutes from tap to taxi. @HailoLondon www.hailocab.com

Wimbledon Highlights
Andy Murray wins the Championship in Historic Style Andy makes glorious history by winning Wimbledon 2013, nearly eight decades after Fred Perry won his last of three titles at The Championships in 1936. Andy Murray defeats Novak Djokovic 6-4, 7-5, 6-4 The frenzied scenes witnessed during the 2012 Olympics last year were a once in a lifetime….or so we thought. It took just 11 months and Britain made sporting history at Wimbledon.
a smile as wide as the sky. Murray celebrated with the crowds, so he could exchange high-fives. He moved to embrace Djokovic – and then sank to the turf, kneeling, his head on the ground as if in prayer. On this most public of stages, it was an intensely private moment.
Destiny was at Murray’s shoulder, and this would be history.
15,000 people in the Centre Court were chanting his name. By now the presentation party was all but ready, only now could Murray summon the strength to reach the people he cares about the most. Making the time-honoured climb to the players’ box, he embraced them all, an acknowledgment of a debt repaid by all sides to all others. He did not stop shaking his head until his fingertips touched the golden trophy. If his eyes saw the inscription upon the ancient cup, he will have read the words: “All England Lawn Tennis Club Single Handed Championship of the World.” It is the very grail of tennis, and it belongs to Andy Murray.
Moments later the air was torn apart by a roar like no other. All his life Andy Murray would have thought of the moment he became Wimbledon champion. The racket flew from his hand and he turned to the crowd with

Say it again! Say it 77 more times. Murray’s win is the first by a British man at Wimbledon in singles since Fred Perry won the title here in 1936. Virginia Wade was the last Briton to win in singles before Murray, doing so in 1977. Murray mania has hit Britain! Andy Murray after his victory win said “I understand how much everyone else wanted to see a British winner. I hope you enjoyed it, I tried my best. Before the final game I was thinking where I was going to put my first serve, because often when you’re serving for matches the first point of that game is crucial. Then I won the first three points – and it was the hardest game ever, the hardest few points I ever played. At the end of the match I didn’t quite know what was going on. It’s been a blur from then to now. Winning Wimbledon is the pinnacle of tennis.” Then Andy Murray shook his head, just as he had in the first moments of his victory. “I can’t believe it,” he said. “I can’t believe it.” “I know how much this means to him, his team and to his country. That makes his success even bigger. There are a lot of expectations on him. After being in the finals, he comes up with a championship run. I gave it my all, but it wasn’t enough.” -Novak Djokovic after his loss As well as the cheering crowds, there was a jam-packed Royal Box, which included British Prime Minister David Cameron, Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic, the Duke of Kent, Greg Rusedski, Stan Smith as well as Victoria Beckham, actors Gerard Butler and Bradley Cooper, football star Wayne Rooney and golf champion Justin Rose. The Scotsman partied that evening at the Wimbledon Championships 2013 Winners Ball, held at the Intercontinental London Park Lane Hotel in Mayfair. He was joined by his girlfriend Kim Sears, his mother and father, Judy and William, as well as several of the VIPs who watched him defeat Serbian player Djokovic on Centre Court.

There were of course other successes at Wimbledon 2013, understandably overshadowed by Andy Murray’s Championship victory…. The Wimbledon 2013 Ladies Singles Title Marion Bartoli, the nearly girl of the 2007 Championships, finally realised the dream she first had as a six-year-old by winning the Ladies’ Singles title. Her 6-1, 6-4 victory over Sabine Lisicki, while thoroughly deserved, was considerably eased by a nervy performance by her opponent until late in the second set. At 6-1, 5-1 Bartoli had three match points, a crisis which finally stirred Lisicki into a late, but eventually vain, rally. As she hammered down an ace on her fourth match point at 5-4, the 28-year-old Frenchwoman dropped her racket, fell to her knees and then rose to embrace her opponent at the net before setting off on the climb to the box occupied by her team, which included the only other Frenchwoman to have won Wimbledon in the Open Era, Amelie Mauresmo. Even when she was 4-1 up in the first set Bartoli was seeking ways to do even better, and she sent two of her rackets to her coaching team’s box to have them restrung. They were returned at a crucial time, just as Lisicki got back to 4-5 in the second set, and Bartoli promptly used one to serve out to love, ending with only her second ace of the match. Bartoli wrapped up the first set in just half an hour and though she was made to fight harder in the second set she embarked on another irresistible surge of five successive games and was resilient enough to fight off the German counter-attack. She is £1.6 million richer, but what matters to this woman of unique and assorted talent is that her childhood dream finally came true. At her news conference, Bartoli was still struggling to come to terms with her achievement.
F E AT U R E
“I still can’t realise I’m a Wimbledon champion, it’s just so overwhelming,” she said. As a pro your dream is to win a Grand Slam, you dream about it every single day, you think about it every single day. So when it actually happens you have achieved something you have dreamed about for millions of hours. You went through pain, you went through tears, you went through low moments. Then, once it happens, in those five, 10 seconds before you shake the hand of your opponent, you feel you’re almost not walking any more on earth. You’re really flying. Even in my perfect dream I couldn’t have dreamed a moment like that. That is beyond perfection. “I felt I played probably my best match of the Championships. It’s really amazing to win Wimbledon and to do it playing well, it’s just unbelievable. And to finish on an ace.” The Wimbledon 2013 Mixed Doubles Championship Was won by Daniel Nestor and Kristina Mladenovic. The No. 8 seeds in the mixed event, Nestor and Mladenovic overcame the top seeds Lisa Raymond and Bruno Soares 5-7, 6-2, 8-6. “It’s an amazing result,” said Mladenovic. “We just played twice and made both final and winning today. Daniel is such a good player. He has lot of experience. “I try to do my job, and he’s helping me a lot at the net. I think we play good at important moment. Many matches we manage to get through tough ones. You know, it’s just great. It’s going really well.” Raymond and Nestor could have just as easily been champions themselves, having two match points of their own when leading 6-5 in the third set. But 20-year old Mladenovic, the youngest player on court, showed composure beyond her years to hold her nerve and eventually her serve and tie the deciding set at six games apiece. “First was a good first serve, and then... he had the right decision going down the line but just didn’t make it, so we were happy for that,” explained Mladenovic.
Two crucial errors in the next game cost Raymond and Soares as first Raymond missed a volley then Soares sent a backhand careering into the net. With the vital final set break in hand, Nestor, who has 80 career doubles titles in his keeping, coolly served the match out. It was an especially difficult loss for Raymond who was hoping to defend the title she won with Mike Bryan last year. In the first set it was the top seeds who broke in the 12th game, off the back of a brilliant Soares backhand volley down the line, to take the set 7-5. Nestor and Mladenovic fought back in the second set as they brushed off the cobwebs to take control. Clean hitting and some sharp volleying from the Canadian-French duo saw them take the second set 6-2, sending the match to a deciding third set. The final set was a much tighter affair as Raymond and Soares raised their game. Both teams had their chances to break, first the top seeds in the fourth game, then Nestor and Mladenovic in the seventh game before the top seeds had two match points that they were unable to convert late in the match. After the match, Nestor was full of praise for rising star Mladenovic. “She’s going to be one of the top singles players eventually. Right now I’m catching her while she’s maybe not winning four or five matches in singles. She’s winning two or three, so hopefully that will change for her. “Right now, you know, she’s focusing on doubles and mixed. I think that will change one day. I caught her at the right time.” Britain is now celebrating Andy Murray’s amazing victory as the Wimbledon 2013 Men’s Champion, bring on the Pimms!

Tackles Parkinson’s with inspiring art exhibition UNTIL 31ST JULY 2013

n partnership with Business Environment, Tammy Gilbert’s debut exhibition in support of charity Parkinson’s UK launches with a private view at The Arts Depot in North Finchley. Gilbert, who suffers from Parkinson’s herself, draws her inspiration from everyday life to create beautiful watercolours that depict images as diverse as a ballerina from a stage show to a busy market scene. The pieces demonstrate Gilbert’s incredible talent and determination to continue to broaden her creative range despite living with Parkinson’s and the challenges the disease creates around things like drawing a straight line.
Commenting on her first solo exhibition, Tammy Gilbert says: “I am incredibly excited to be showcasing my work and hope that visitors will take as much pleasure in the paintings as I take in creating them. Parkinson’s UK is a charity very close to my heart and 20 per cent of all sales will be donated to the charity so it can continue to do its fantastic work in supporting people living with Parkinson’s. I am also grateful to my sponsor Business Environment, who has supported me in making my dream to exhibit a reality.” 4 0 J U LY 2 0 1 3
David Saul, Managing Director at Business Environment adds: “Parkinson’s UK is one of our principal charities and we are delighted to be supporting Tammy with her debut exhibition. Her work is testament to her creative flair and ability to overcome the enormous challenges that come with Parkinson’s disease.” Tammy Gilbert has been painting for over 12 years and is a student of The Hampstead Institute of Art. Her career has been varied starting out as a make-up artist working with members of the royal family and including time as a designer of her own fashion label. Tammy Gilbert’s exhibition runs until 31st July with 20% of all sales donated to Parkinson’s UK. City of London Festival 2013 F UNTIL 26th JULY 2013
ollowing its acclaimed and record-breaking 50th anniversary season, the annual City of London Festival has announced its full 2013 programme, promising once again to animate the Square Mile with its customary extravaganza of music, dance, art, film, poetry, family and participation events, transforming some of the City’s most iconic venues and outdoor spaces into a wealth of creative activity for everyone to enjoy. The 2013 Festival offers another entertaining but innovative and thoughtprovoking programme rooted in three main, interlocking themes: city walls – connecting the City of London with Derry~Londonderry and other historic walled cities from Utrecht to Jerusalem; conflict and resolution; and trees, sustaining the Festival’s artistic responses to the environment. The Festival will reflect on significant historical landmark anniversaries, including the 400-year relationship between the City of London and Derry~Londonderry, the 300th anniversary of the Treaty of Utrecht and the 100th anniversary of Benjamin Britten – one of Britain’s most important composers.
and beautiful Livery Halls, a particular highlight is promised: At Sixes & Sevens, a new choral and orchestral work by Mark-Anthony Turnage and poet Paul Muldoon commissioned by the City of London and The Honourable The Irish Society to mark the 400 year relationship with Derry~Londonderry will be performed simultaneously in both the Guildhalls of London and Derry. In Mansion House, a concert by the Britten Sinfonia will resolve the conflict between Apollo and Dionysius in music by Stravinsky, Britten and David Matthews, framed by Vivaldi’s evergreen The Four Seasons. In the squares and gardens of the City will be filled with a diverse programme of music, street theatre, circus and dance, free for all to enjoy.
Programme highlights include
Walks, talks and thought provoking debates: visitors to the Festival can experience a stimulating programme of walks, talks and debate that compliment this year’s themes Join together with a host of leading musicians, expert speakers, therapists, arts practitioners, neurologists, philosophers, historians and soldiers to explore the relationship between music and conflict.
World class concerts: great artists will appear in St Paul’s Cathedral for a series of high-profile ticketed concerts. An historic celebration of Handel’s Utrecht Te Deum and Jubilate, premièred in St Paul’s in July 1713, will frame the first performance of The Idea of Peace by Adrian Williams. In the final St Paul’s performance the London Symphony Orchestra and Tenebrae renew their acclaimed partnership in a programme which ranges from Josquin to Richard Strauss and concludes with a special, one-off combination of Barber’s iconic Adagio and Agnus Dei.
Free summer events programme: the Festival will continue to open up the outdoor spaces of the City and beyond to a wide range of audiences with over 100 free events programmed across a wide range of art forms. Highlights include a Family Day on Hampstead Heath entitled Irish Roots – a celebration of Northern Irish culture and heritage. Beoga, one of the most exciting new traditional bands to emerge from Ireland, headline the bandstand and activities include a Gaelic Games, storytelling inspired by the Northern Irish-born C S Lewis and Irish reeling around Parliament Hill Fields.
New commissions: once again the Festival will present a wealth of world premières and new work. A highlight this year – with the working title Trees, Walls and Cities – will feature a newly-commissioned song cycle for the Brodsky Quartet and soprano Loré Lixenberg, linking Derry~Londonderry, the City of London, Utrecht, Berlin, Vienna, Dubrovnik, Nicosia and Jerusalem in creative reconciliation. A theme running through the texts will be trees – symbolic of life, freedom, nourishment, environment, building and peace. The songs will be brought together in an interlocking suite of musical material, composed by Nigel Osborne, creating a coherent journey between the styles and characters of the songs and cities.
Mobile Orchard: a pop-up mobile orchard with real and manufactured trees will take root at a number of City locations throughout the Festival period. Part installation, part performance platform, passersby will be transported from the inner city to a leafy glade where they will be able to enjoy music, street theatre, dance and participatory activities as well as discovering more about native British orchards and the City’s trees.

It was really important to show a lifestyle rather than a show home”. e development is not only about luxury living, it also boasts a restaurant, café with decked sun terrace, members’ lounge, state of the art gym offering personal training expertise, a therapy room and a dry berth boatyard with 155 deep and shallow swinging moorings. Fortnum & Mason to open new landmark store For the first time in its 307-year history, Fortnum & Mason is opening a new store in Britain. The world-famous Piccadilly establishment is to be joined by a prestige outlet in the former ticket hall of London’s St Pancras International Station.
T
he new store will open this November, and represents a landmark in Fortnum’s development programme. The expansion will create 25 new jobs, and follows a confident performance from the retailer last year with a 17% increase in Christmas sales and a visit from three generations of British royalty. This move extends the Fortnum’s brand into a modern London growth area. As the Eurostar gateway to Europe, it makes the location an important strategic move for Britain’s oldest major retailer. “St Pancras is London’s Grand Central Station,” said Ewan Venters, chief executive of Fortnum & Mason. “It’s a great opportunity. We feel the centre of gravity in London is moving north and east from Piccadilly.” He added, “Thirty-five million people a year go through the station, and nearly a quarter of those people are going there to shop rather than to travel.” The Ticket Hall, a 2,000 square feet space, retains the old brickwork and vaulting of the original building, and the station’s heritage itself chimes with Fortnum’s own sense of tradition. As well as offering a range of Fortnum’s products, a tablecloth tea service will be provided in the store, with tables both inside and outside the store. There will also be an on-thego offering for passengers heading for the trains – a first for Fortnum’s.
5 4 J U LY 2 0 1 3
Fortnum’s will also be providing the possibility for customers to be able to design and order their hampers instore on iPads. Fortnum’s has been associated with travel ever since its foundation in 1707. The iconic hampers supplied groceries to customers worldwide – from sailors at Cowes Week and archaeologists in Egypt to Everest climbers. Fortnum & Mason, established 1707 in Piccadilly London, is one of the world’s finest stores renowned for wonderful hampers and a legendary Food Hall. Fortnum’s is synonymous with food, drink and celebration. Whilst food and drink remain the soul of the business, Fortnum’s history and reputation are also deeply rooted in providing the finest array of gifts, from the most exclusive and delicate to the most unusual.

Spice up summer barbecue season
with Jim Beam, the world’s number one bourbon Bring a flavour of the South to the UK and whip up a cocktail!
I
n Kentucky – home to 90% of the world’s bourbon, including No.1 Jim Beam – barbecues are a key part of the traditional Southern cuisine. The natural affinity between the smoky flavours of barbecued meat and the smooth, sweet taste of Jim Beam bourbon ensures a match made in epicurean heaven, and a guaranteed ‘wow’ factor for summer revelry with friends. Across the pond, Brits might be seasoned in the barbecue department, but many are still discovering this smoothest of spirits. As an unpretentious,
If you’re after a traditionally smooth, creamy bourbon, try Jim Beam White. It’s a classic which has never gone out of style, and has been produced essentially the same way by the same family for more than 200 years. Try it neat, on the rocks, served with a simple mixer such as cola or, for something more exotic, try the Harvest Cocktail.
For a sweet but refreshing variant, look no further than Jim Beam Honey. Jim Beam’s inspired distillers took the classic Jim Beam White and infused it with real golden honey and liqueur to create a whiskey with complex notes of caramel, oak and vanilla, and a rich finish of sweet honey. This member of the family is delicious chilled, neat or on the rocks, or have a go at mixing up Jim’s Honey Cooler.
straight-talking whiskey, with several different flavours, the powers-that-be at Jim Beam would never begin to tell you how you should serve and enjoy your bourbon. Indeed, in the words of seventh generation Beam family distiller, Fred Noe, Jim Beam is best enjoyed “any way you please”. So let us introduce you to the Jim Beam family, and offer inspiration on how to serve your bourbon at your next barbecue bash, so you can discover for yourself the possibilities of matching barbecue and bourbon, ensuring a summer to remember.
Red Stag by Jim Beam is another delicious flavoured variant of the classic four-year-old Jim Beam White. Through a slow infusion process, Jim Beam’s distillers infuse the bourbon with natural black cherry flavours, resulting in a distinctive smooth and well-rounded liquid like nothing you’ve experienced before. Red Stag is fantastic served chilled mixed with ginger or cola, or straight up. Or, if you fancy going a step further, try the Red Stag Summer Peach.
And, finally, the new kid on the block, and definitely one for bourbon aficionados. It’s an extraordinary new bourbon experience developed according to a proprietary process which extracts the rich whiskey trapped inside the barrel during ageing. This barrel extract is then blended with six year old bourbon to create a distinctly bold bourbon with a rich flavour of intense oak. Experiment with it neat, on the rocks, mixed with cola or as a cocktail to find the right serve for you.

The Pimm’s tradition is almost as entrenched in British culture as the cup of tea. All it takes is a prolonged period of good weather, and nothing beats a glass of Pimms on a summer’s day.
P
imm’s is most popular in Britain, particularly. It is one of the two staple drinks at Wimbledon, the Henley Royal Regatta and Ascot. A Pimm’s is also the standard cocktail at many polo matches. History of Pimms Rewind back to a London oyster bar in the 1840s where owner James Pimm, a farmer’s son from Kent, invented the thirstquencher. Using gin, quinine and a secret mixture of herbs, Pimm served up the brew as an aid to digestion, in a small tankard and the No. 1 Cup moniker was born. Pimm’s No. 1 Cup is based on gin and can be served both on ice or in cocktails. It has a dark tea colour with a reddish tint, and tastes subtly of spice and citrus fruit. It is often taken with “English-style” lemonade, as well as various chopped fresh ingredients, particularly apples, cucumber, oranges, lemons, strawberry, and borage, though nowadays most substitute mint. Pimm’s can also be mixed with champagne (or a sparkling white wine), called a “Pimm’s Royal Cup”.
5 8 J U LY 2 0 1 3
Pimm’s began large-scale production in 1851 to keep up with sales to other bars. The distillery began selling it commercially in 1859 using hawkers on bicycles. In 1865 Pimm sold the business and the right to use his name to Frederick Sawyer. In 1880 the business was acquired by future Lord Mayor of London, Horatio Davies, and a chain of Pimm’s Oyster Houses was franchised in 1887.
Pimms Recipes
After the Second World War, Pimms extended their range, using a number of other spirits as bases for new cups. Pimm’s No. 2 Cup was based on Scotch whisky. Pimm’s No. 3 Cup is based on brandy. Phased out, but a version infused with spices and orange peel marketed as Pimm’s Winter Cup is now seasonally available. Pimm’s No. 4 Cup was based on rum, currently phased out. Pimm’s No. 5 Cup was based on rye whisky, also currently phased out. Pimm’s No. 6 Cup is based on vodka. It is still produced, but in small quantities.
ENGLISH PASSION PIMMS NO.6 Take a shaker 2/3 full of ice and add 50ml of Pimms No.6, 25ml of Zubrowka vodka, flesh and juice of a passion fruit and a dash of sugar syrup. Shake well and strain into a tumbler full of ice. Garnish with a sprig of mint and two short straws.
The original No. 1 cup still reigns supreme in popularity.
TRADITIONAL PIMMS NO.1 Take one slice of orange, lemon, apple, cucumber per person and one sprig of mint and add to two parts lemonade to one part Pimms. TURBO PIMMS NO.1 As above but five parts lemonade, two parts Pimms, one part gin.
MAXIMUM VOLTAGE PIMMS NO.6 Take a shaker 2/3 full of ice, 50ml of Pimms No.6, 25ml of Zubrowka vodka and 25ml of Cointreau. Shake well and strain into a highball full of ice. Fill with soda water and garnish with mint. If mixing your own Pimms sounds too much like hard work, head to one of the many pubs and bars in London which serve up Pimms with a healthy dose of fruit, ice and garnished with a sprig of mint.

Covent Garden is famous for its markets and is often associated with flower seller Eliza Doolittle from My Fair Lady. Known for its entertainment and culture, Covent Garden also features a number of restaurants and bars and is the ideal place to unwind after a busy day shopping. King’s Road The area was made famous by a lively local scene during the ‘Swinging 60s’ and punk fuelled seventies. The doyenne of punk fashion, Vivienne Westwood, still runs her first ever store at the so-called ‘World’s End’ end of The King’s Road. Although the area has none of the character of that time, it is still full of famous faces and is one of the best and most varied places to shop and eat in London. For fashion, King’s Road offers high street regulars such as Jigsaw, French Connection and Gap but if you’re looking for something more original American Classics sell vintage Levi’s and tuxedos. At the Sloane Square end, crowned by Peter Jones, there is the pedestrianised Duke of York Square - full of modern shops and cafes, including Mary Quant and Yves Delorme. You can purchase anything from antiques to boutique designer fashions, taking in upmarket stores quirkily named R.Soles, Sweaty Betty and After Noah. Sloane Street With a similar profile to Bond Street, Sloane Street features flagship stores for the world’s most famous designer brands. Located near Knightsbridge, shoppers can choose from boutiques including Escada, Missoni, Dior and Jimmy Choo. Sloane Street became famous for the term “Sloane Rangers” named for the upper class women shopping its streets, including the late Princess Diana. London is a vibrant and bustling city with a variety of luxury boutiques and retailers featuring some of the world’s most exclusive products. Wherever you find yourself in the city, you’re sure to be only a few metres from a premium shopping destination. Swim in the sun
Whether you’re looking to swim yourself fit or simply escape the summer heat, nothing beats a refreshing dip in the open air. Luckily, London has many options with open-air facilities in every corner of the city. Hampstead Heath Swimming Ponds Open-air swimming is internationally famous on Hampstead Heath with the Ladies’ Pond, the Men’s Pond, the Mixed Pond and the Parliament Hill Lido. The Ladies’ and Men’s Ponds are unique in the United Kingdom in being the only lifeguarded open-water swimming facilities open to the public every day of the year. The pools are open to ladies, men and mixed groups (including accompanied children aged eight-15, at the lifeguards’ discretion) respectively. The Men’s and Ladies’ Ponds are open all year round but to use the Mixed Pond in the winter season you must join the Hampstead Heath Winter Swimming Club. Even in the summer the water is chilly. ampstead Heath Swimming Ponds Hampstead Heath, London NW5 1QR. H Tel: 020 7485 3873. www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/hampstead
Parliament Hill Lido Built in 1938 and refurbished in 2005, the Grade II-listed Parliament Hill Lido measures a generous 60 metres by 28 metres. It has a stainless steel pool liner (the only one in an outdoor pool in the UK) which gives the water a metallic shimmer – not that you’ll be able to tell when it’s packed full of people on a sunny day. The lido is unheated, but wetsuits are permitted at the lifeguard’s discretion. There are two sessions a day (7-9am and 10am-6pm) with an additional adults-only evening session on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays. There is also a paddling pool for under-fives and a cafe. arliament Hill Fields, Gordon House Rd, NW5 1LP www.cityoflondon.gov. P uk/hampstead
Park Road Leisure Centre At busy weekends and during holiday periods, separate sessions for lane and fun swimming operate at Crouch End’s 50-metre lido, formerly known as Park Road Pools.. Prime Purchase I
n these straightened times, adding to your watch collection may not seem to be a priority but the continued year-on-year growth of the UK watch market is evidence that many of us are doing just that. If we are to embrace this fascination with watches, there are still ways to save money, or maybe just to spend it more wisely. The last two years has seen explosive growth in the pre-owned watch market. Following the pattern set by the automotive industry, more consumers are realising that they have never bought a car as its first owner so why shouldn’t they take the same attitude with watches. This way the buyer can avoid the initial hit of VAT and depreciation enabling them to save money on their intended purchase or move up to a brand that they would otherwise be unable to afford. Once you stray from the watch brands’ official dealer network, there are risks of course. There are the watch equivalent of the backstreet car lot, selling pieces of dubious origin, put together from a variety of parts which may, or may not, be what they seem. Buying a watch from an auction house such as Fellows gives you piece of mind on this point. The large number of specialists within the watch department creates a wind ranging pool of knowledge across many brands and eras of production. This ensures that fakes are rooted out and that the rest of the watches offered for sale are described accurately, fully disclosing any aftermarket additions or alterations that may have been made. Fellows are famous for the depth and rigor of the condition reports that we produce for each watch. Eschewing a simple grading system which may be misleading, each watch is inspected under 10x magnification both inside and outside the case. Every mark, dent or scratch is noted to ensure that there are no unpleasant surprises. Bidders have such confidence in this approach that they are willing to bid from around the word on the
2 2 J U LY 2 0 1 3 6 8 J U LY 2 0 1 3
basis of these reports and the multiple high quality online images that Fellows produces. Another way to buy great value watches from auction is to take advantage of the breadth of brands on offer and the range of price points. For many watch brands there are similar – even related brands that share features but can be bought for much less than their coveted cousins. The Fellows Vintage and Modern Wristwatch Auction of 15th July 2013 provides three such examples, although many more may be found. The Omega Seamaster chronograph is rightly regarded as a quality prestige watch which holds its value well in the pre-owned market. Consider Lot 105 from Longines, Swatchgroup stable mate of Omega, who’s equally robust and wellmade Hydroconquest chronograph sells at auction for a quarter of the price. If you like the sparse Teutonic style of A. Lange & Söhne but don’t quite have the cash, take a look at Lot 60 by Glashütte Original, the Saxon neighbours have a very similar look but the Glashütte will relive you of a lot less cash. The Rolex Daytona is one of the most sought after sports chronographs in the world and their second hand values reflect this. If you want a Rolex-made case and bracelet but are happy with an ETA movement then the Tudor Oystersdate Chronograph is the budget option. At Fellows we are happy to share our knowledge and passion for watches to guide your purchase. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions you may have. T
he Home of Rolls-Royce Collection celebrates the meticulous design, engineering and craftsmanship employed in the production of every car that leaves Goodwood. and following the release of a design sketch illustrating the Bespoke design and conception process, a rare glimpse into the skill of the marque’s master craftspeople and unique manufacturing processes is presented today. “The Home of Rolls-Royce Collection showcases what makes Goodwood a unique centre of manufacturing excellence,” said Torsten Müller-Ötvös, Chief Executive Officer, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. “A perfect blend of traditional crafts, cutting-edge technology and world-class Bespoke design has driven our success over our first 10 years. craftsmanship. Individual pieces of wood veneer are laser-cut to ensure precision. A craftsperson then painstakingly assembles the sections, ensuring they perfectly express the vision of the marque’s Bespoke design team. A fastidious process of quality control follows, utilising the world’s most accurate measuring tool – the human eye. In 2012, a second successive record year for the marque, over 3,500 hand-built Rolls-Royce cars, exclusively created at Goodwood, were exported to all five continents. This is celebrated throughout the collection with a compass motif that expresses the Home of Rolls-Royce’s position as a global centre of manufacturing excellence. The pattern is also intricately embroidered into the armrests and console lid. 112,533 stitches are applied by precision embroidery machines that make 1,000 individual stitches per minute – however, such is the complexity of the pattern it takes over an hour to finish each individual piece. Co-ordinates engraved into tread plates, the bezel of the Spirit of Ecstasy and umbrella handles further express Goodwood’s place as the only manufacturing centre for the world’s pinnacle super-luxury marque. A hand-painted coachline, culminating in a half-compass motif completes the exterior. Forming

the final stage of a week-long, 22 stage painting process, coachlines are hand-applied by one highly-skilled craftsman using squirrel hair brushes. Normally this takes three hours – however the intricacy of this very special Bespoke design means the time taken to complete the process doubles. The Home of Rolls-Royce Collection cars are currently being hand-built at Goodwood. Final images of the completed cars will be released in the second half of 2013. However we have new details about the upcoming Home of Rolls-Royce Collection. The highlights of the collection are – 1 A compass motif expresses the Home of Rolls-Royce’s position as a global centre of manufacturing excellence. The beautiful motif on the glove box has been created from 11 different types of wood including Sycamore, Holly and Satinwood. These represent the different woods that have been used in Ghost and Phantom interiors since 2003. Each piece of virgin wood has been milled and sanded by hand before being carefully coated with 5 layers of lacquer. 2 20,000 wood veneer combinations are available in every Rolls-Royce. Each veneer created by the craftsman’s hand of the Bespoke team is totally unique to the customer. All of veneers are stored in a humidor which is kept at 25 degrees and 80% humidity to allow the wood to breathe and remain supple. Each veneer spends a minimum of 3 days in the humidor, before being fitted into a Rolls-Royce.
3 W hile continuing to use traditional woodworking skills, the craftsmen applied lasers to ensure total precision in the alignment of each of the 170 separate pieces of wood along with the metal inlay. 4 The Home of Rolls-Royce Collection Phantom embroidery comes to life with 112,533 stitches which are applied by precision embroidery machines that make 1,000 individual stitches per minute. But due to the complexity of the pattern it takes over an hour to finish each individual piece. 5 The Spirit of Ecstasy comes from the Home of Rolls-Royce Collection. cars, which highlight the exquisite craftsmanship found at Goodwood. The inscription on this special Spirit of Ecstasy references the position of their plant. 6 Each car undergoes a 22-stage process which uses more than 100 pounds (45.5kg) of paint. The Home of Rolls-Royce Collection offers 44,000 individual exterior paint colors to choose from. 7 I n all, 60 pairs of hands take 400 hours to construct every Rolls-Royce motor car. 8 A lso 450 individual leather pieces are cut and fitted to each Rolls-Royce Phantom. 9 And 672 metres of thread is used in every Home of Rolls-Royce Collection Phantom. 10 Lastly, there are precisely 58 layers to every Phantom wood part.

Walk over London and all over cancer at Shine 2013!
C
SATURDAY 28th SEPTEMBER 2013
ancer Research UK’s night time walking marathon, Shine, is returning to London for its third year! More than 10,000 men and women from across the UK are being challenged to light up the night and ‘walk all over cancer’ by signing up to the event and taking to the streets of London!
Starting and finishing at the iconic Battersea Power Station, participants can choose between walking a full (26.2 miles) or half marathon (13.1 miles) route and can personalise their sponsorship by choosing to fund research into treatments to fight one of 12 different cancer types, including children’s, breast and prostate cancers, or for all cancer types. The route will take in iconic London sights such as the Tower of London, London Bridge, St Paul’s Cathedral and the London Eye, which will be lit up against the night sky. Walkers, who will form a human road of light, are being encouraged to illuminate themselves with lights, glow sticks and sparkling outfits to symbolise the hope that Cancer Research UK’s scientists are bringing to the darkness of cancer and the progress that has already been made in the fight against it. Sarah Squire, Head of Shine, said: “Come rain or shine, the spotlight will be on Battersea Power Station on 28th September. We need ten thousand men and women to put their walking shoes on, get out their glow sticks and make Shine a sparkling success again this year. “We’re asking people to light up London and walk all over cancer. By taking part and fundraising, they will bring hope to many people affected by cancer now and in the future.”

Shine has already raised nearly £9million to help fund Cancer Research UK’s life-saving work, but it doesn’t stop there. This year, Shine is the flagship event for Stand Up To Cancer a joint national fundraising campaign from Cancer Research UK and Channel 4. It is hoped Shine participants will raise more than £2.8million for SU2C to fund the best pioneering translational research – turning breakthroughs in the lab into new treatments that will bring more tomorrows for families all over the UK. Shine 2013 is now open for entries, Enter at www.shinewalk.org and help beat cancer sooner About Cancer Research UK Cancer Research UK is the world’s leading cancer charity dedicated to saving lives through research. Christian Louboutin Opens men’s boutique in Selfridges Luxury French designer Christian Louboutin is pleased to announce the opening of a boutique within landmark London department store, Selfridges.
T
he 51 metres square space sits within the Men’s Shoes department - the largest retail space dedicated to men’s footwear in the world - on the store’s first floor, and offers a wide selection from the shoe collection alongside bags and small leather goods. The boutique is the second dedicated Men’s retail space for Christian Louboutin within the UK.
A wooden panelled wall in the signature Louboutin red welcomes visitors to the boutique and offers an enticing glimpse of the space inside via an internal window feature which also acts as display area for key seasonal styles. Marble, sourced in Morocco by Christian Louboutin, marks the threshold of the entrance – its high gloss finish contrasting with the soft leather and woven wilton carpet floor finishes throughout the boutique in signature red and deep grey tones.
Designer William Russell of Pentagram Design was commissioned to create a store concept which would deliver an immersive, masculine environment which also captured the spirit of the Christian Louboutin brand and celebrated the sense of theatricality seen in Louboutin’s designs.
The theme of contrast continues throughout the boutique with a combination of textures and materials employed to create a luxurious environment. At the rear of the space wood veneer walls and velvet upholstered seating soften and offer balance to the marble detailing found throughout and spiked metal detailing within display cases.

The space includes a central ceiling lighting feature, a bespoke design by Pentagram. Here, light travels directly down cut glass tubes to illuminate central display areas, whilst additional lighting is given from the back lit display shelves, featuring alabaster sourced from Spain. The collection is presented on a dynamic central display which utilises hand turned and carved wooden plinths of varying heights with integral red pony skin seats and houses both shoes and bags. A dedicated area was conceived for small leather goods with a glass display case framing a selection of wallets and electronic goods holders. The launch collection in store will include Spring Summer pieces taking inspiration from this season’s brights theme, including the brogue-inspired Golfito and the popular Louis Spiked high top trainer alongside exclusive styles. Highlights for Autumn Winter in store include updates on classic styles such as the Rollerboy, found in rich velvet for the new season and for the more adventurous dresser; a glittering toe cap on the Bruno Orlato dress shoe or all out statement wear in the glitter encrusted Dandy. Christian Louboutin Christian Louboutin was created in 1992 when Louboutin opened his first store at 19 Jean-Jacques Rousseau in Paris. The brand currently has 73 stores worldwide including a number of dedicated Men’s boutiques. Rojanatorn
Utterly original wearable works of art (and quite a lot of other things too)
R
WRITTEN BY MARK FODEN ojanatorn is an extraordinarily original shop - owned by an exceptional woman - selling some quite exquisite things. And if you have been there, you probably wouldn’t think this was overdoing it.
Owner, designer and inspirer Rojanatorn is named after the shop’s remarkable owner Rojanatorn Na Songkhla or ‘Candy’, as she insists on being called by anyone who has known her for more than 5 minutes. Candy is Thai, delightfully effusive and very engaging. She has been a well-known figure in the Bangkok fashion industry for nearly 20 years, owning a substantial jewellery business and several shops there. Her Narandha and GGub stores in the centre of the city are now extremely well known. Candy splits her time between Thailand and the United Kingdom and took the decision last year to set up Rojanatorn - an outlet for her work in London and also a companion online store. Many beautiful things There are four main product ranges – jewellery, handbags, shirts and home decorations. Jewellery is the mainstay of the business and Candy does much of the design work herself. The items are elaborate and quite beautiful, all very well made to one-off designs. Candy has many, as she calls them, ‘longtime’ customers for whom she designs and makes items to order. Handbags are an increasingly important part of the business. There are two types: hand-painted and fabric. The painted bags are usually leather and are done entirely by hand; each bag unique and signed by the artist. There are two ranges: one called “Rojanatorn” - designed by Candy herself – which
8 4 J U LY 2 0 1 3
tend to be more classical in style; and the other - called “Kongpat” – which is… er… extremely funky. These are by Kongpat Sakdapitak a good friend of Candy’s and a very well-known Bangkok artist. The fabric bag range, which Candy has labelled ‘Blossom’, has a floral theme (unsurprisingly): they are hand-stitched and again unique (and gorgeous). Rojanatorn’s shirts are unusual and individual. There are two sorts: Patch by Panod Shirts are often floral with contrasting sewn patches; the Kongpat shirts are decorated with cloth paints and quite unconventional. Both are hugely stylish. Home decorations are a recent addition to the business with items such as chandeliers, lamp shades and armchairs. Extraordinary things – some defying description! Everything in the shop really is a work of art: you would be hard pressed to find two items the same. A quite delightful shop The shop itself, a short walk from the New King’s Road, is charming. It’s on two levels with furniture and jewellery at street level and bags and shirts in the basement. It is highly mooch-able with nookfuls of extraordinary stuff and some very nice Thai people to show you what’s what. Rojanatorn is at 150 Wandsworth Bridge Road. You have to take a look. www.rojanatorn.co.uk

hat’s where Amanda Powell and her team of PAs come in. A West London mother with over ten years of Private PA experience, Powell started boutique company Private PA Ltd in 2006 after being inundated with requests for her services. Her aim in founding the company was to offer more clients an efficient and stress-free way to manage their lives. “I often feel as though I stand between my clients and the rest of the world,” Powell explains. “It can be overwhelming for them with so much to do and so little time. But with focused support and organisation, we can keep the chaos in check. The aim is to take the weight off our clients’ shoulders and put them back in control.” Her very personal service provides you with a dedicated assistant from a small team of PAs, all of whom are specifically chosen for both their executive and lifestyle experience. After an initial free one-hour consultation, your Private PA will create a plan specifically tailored to your needs and, before you know it, will be carrying it out. They can, and often do, work autonomously so you can confidently leave them to it. “As the relationship develops, we learn how our clients like things done and what to prioritise,” says Powell. “This allows us to deal with everything we can before going back to the client with the things that need their input.” With an innovative and intimate style of working, there’s not much they can’t do for you. From dealing with insurance claims to overseeing maintenance work, to getting household paperwork and holiday snaps in order, the Private

PAs are exceptional multitaskers. Whether in an executive or personal role, for a private client, established business or start-up company, they meet every task, whether large or small, with excellent focus and the highest standards, leaving satisfied clients across London and the Home Counties. As Powell explains, it’s a flexible service. “Every client is different so we do anything that is needed of us: whether overseeing a house sale or planning a holiday. Our aim is to keep things moving forward while freeing up clients’ time so they can get on with more important things.” Powell and her PAs don’t describe themselves as indispensible, because they create personalised systems that allow clients to lay their hands on anything they need when the PAs are not around. As they see it, there is no point leaving a client feeling as helpless as they did before, not knowing what has been done and where things are. Flexible and reliable, the Private PAs take the hassle out of everyday life, providing relief and support for clients who are struggling with a seemingly insurmountable list of tasks. They leave clients safe in the knowledge that they will come in and leave no stone unturned so that everything is covered and nothing is missed. Book them on a regular basis or for a one off job just to clear the decks. To find out more, visit PrivatePa. co.uk, email Info@PrivatePA.co.uk or call Amanda on 07714 100370

In this months article Healthy Balance Integrated Medicine practitioners share their advice on your health issues.
This issue, Cassandra Fullagar, Kim Pedrick and Angela Margetts contribute. I have had psoriasis since my teens. I was wondering if I could have a massage or if this is not advisable. The psoriasis is everywhere except for my head, palms and the soles of my feet. Psoriasis is really frustrating for you to put up with, making you uncomfortable, sore and self-conscious. It is linked to the immune system and needs careful management by your doctor. I’m sorry to say it is not advisable to have a full body treatment as the oils or creams and even the pressure itself can exacerbate the soreness and inflammation.
I have been suffering from tension type headaches for many years now. I take painkillers at least twice a week, however these have stopped working. My GP says that the painkillers may be making my headaches worse but I’m worried about stopping them as I don’t think I’ll be able to cope without them.
However, you can enjoy Indian head massage. As well as the scalp, this could be adapted to include the face, palms, and soles of your feet in the treatment as well. Reflexology would be another excellent option for you as it is only performed on the soles of your feet and can be incredibly relaxing. Naturopathic treatment might be worth pursuing too, so that any lifestyle factors that may be exaggerating the problem can be addressed. Do make sure you keep your GP informed of any complementary treatment you are thinking of having so that they can check it is safe to work alongside your medication.
Headaches are one of the most common neurological problems presenting to GPs and neurologists. They are painful and debilitating and an important cause of absence from work and school. One of the most common types of primary headache is a tension headache; however medication overuse headache also commonly occurs in people taking medication for a primary headache disorder. The National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) has now recommended acupuncture as an effective treatment for headaches and I would suggest that this would be a good treatment for you as you stop your painkillers and for future management of your headaches. Unlike some of the painkilling medications you have been taking, acupuncture treatment for headaches has no side effects. The British Medical Acupuncture Society (BMAS) website will give you information on Doctors and Physiotherapists in your area who use medical acupuncture for the treatment of headaches.
Cassandra Fullagar is a CIBTAC level, Champney’s qualified Massage Therapist.
Kim Pedrick is a chartered physiotherapist and medical acupuncturist with a special interest in the health of dancers.
Can reflexology help me have a healthier pregnancy?
Well done to you for being so proactive! A Healthy pregnancy pays dividends to your body and mind now and beyond the birth and so ultimately your baby will benefit. Reflexology has been known to relieve back pain, nausea, insomnia, fatigue, headaches and swollen legs. It can be used to kick start labour if the due date has been reached and gone beyond. It encourages contractions through relaxing the mum to be and it can get labour started. Midwives are warming toward these benefits but I’m glad you are thinking of discovering them for yourself. A reflexologist who has experience of treating pregnant women will be able to make you the most comfortable and get the most out of your treatment. Do have a look at the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council website at www.ctha.org.uk to find a reflexologist in your area.
Angela Margetts is a former oncology sister and IRHH nurse, now specialising in complementary therapy.

It is probably due to the engorgement of the breast tissue that occurs just before a period. This is under the control of the female reproductive hormones: oestrogen and progesterone. Towards the end of the cycle they have a
9 0 J U LY 2 0 1 3
histamine like effect on the blood vessels of the breast leading to an increase in the fluid in the breast tissue. This normally resolves once the period has started. However it can continue to varying degrees throughout the cycle becoming worse just before the period and never completely resolving. Cyclical mastalgia tends to occur in puberty or just before the menopause when the hormonal milieu is at its most unstable. Despite this it can occur at any age and may be related to external stresses that can affect the well being of the woman concerned. Non-cyclical mastalgia is unrelated to the period. This tends to occur in the post menopausal patient. A significant percentage
of patients are actually suffering from referred pain or chest related discomfort. Management Acknowledgement by the clinician that mastalgia is an important condition with significant impact on a woman’s quality of life is vital. A full history will be taken and a pain chart may be required so the woman can record the severity of the pain throughout the cycle in order to establish whether there is a pattern. The type of contraception is important with the Mirena coil as well as other hormonal contraceptives possibly playing a role. Imaging will be guided according to the results of the clinical assessment but usually involves mammogram and / or ultrasound to help exclude other causes for pain such as cysts.
H E A LT H & B E AU T Y
Treatment Cyclical Mastalgia A full range of treatments are available but it is imperative that the woman herself chooses which to take as the side effects can be worse than the pain and the woman is the only one who can decide as she is the one with the pain!
If on a hormonal contraceptive it may be worth changing this first and if perimenopausal and not on the pill it may be worth actually starting a low dose pill to regulate the hormonal situation as long as the risks are explained and the woman can make an informed choice.
Surgery is very rarely indicated and not always successful. If as a last resort it is being considered a second opinion should always be sort and also psychological counselling is mandatory.
Simple advice like reducing caffeine intake, wearing appropriate bra sizes (including perhaps a larger comfortable bra at the end of the cycle), a healthy diet and reducing external stress etc. would not be unreasonable as a starting point. There is some evidence that iodine can help so I normally advise some vitamin and mineral supplement. The evidence around gamma linoleic acid (GLA) and mastalgia is controversial. However I believe it is reasonable to try either Evening Primrose Oil or Star Flower Oil (this contains more GLA so you don’t have to take so many tablets) to give a dose of arounf 320mg of GLA a day. As it is a food supplement it can take a couple of months to work so in the mean time unless it is contra-indicated some ibuprofen or voltarol gel massaged into the painful areas of the breast twice a day may help. The massage may help reduce the congestion in addition to the pain relief in the gel. Those wishing to use more natural approach can try a Savoy cabbage leaf placed in a comfortable bra at night – there is evidence that this is as effective as the gels. If these measures do not work then the woman must decided on whether she wishes to explore more radical hormonal manipulation.
In the premenopausal woman with resistant mastalgia a trial of Zoladex injections could be used to stop her periods altogether and render her temporarily postmenopausal. Clearly this decision must be made in partnership with the patient.
Non – Cyclical Mastalgia. This type of mastalgia is much more difficult to treat as hormonal manipulation is less likely to work, especially in the postmenopausal woman – unless she is taking HRT. The basic advice remains the same and the clinician will pay particular attention to any signs of sites for referred pain or general rheumatological conditions such as fibromyagia.
Other options include the use of drugs such as Danazol. This acts like a male hormone and around 25% of women suffer side effects such as male pattern hair growth, weight gain, voice changes, aggression and increased libido. If this is unsuccessful then some women will choose a trial of Tamoxifen. This antioestrogen is not licensed for the treatment of mastalgia and although effective it has significant potential side effects which can be fatal and therefore should be fully explained.
Summary Mastlagia effects 85% of women during their lifetime. It is rarely associated with breast cancer. Cyclical mastalgia is the commonest type. It is generally self limiting and resolves without treatment. However, treatment is available although it is imperative that the woman herself decides on how far she wishes to go.

HAIR TO DIVE FOR GET THE MERMAID-INSPIRED LOOK THIS SUMMER WITH NATURAL, TEXTURED HAIR. LISA HAYNES REVEALS THE SHORT CUTS TO BEACH BEAUTIFUL.
Get the mermaid-inspired look this summer with natural, textured hair. Lisa Haynes reveals the short cuts to beach beautiful. Put down the straightening irons and smoothing balms, because the look of this summer is undone beachy waves. Take inspiration from the flowing locks of mythical mermaids. ink naturally beautiful hair with tousled texture that doesn't look like it's been styled or smothered with product. "Messy manes are a key look this season," says David Fletcher, senior creative director for Unite hair. "To achieve the look, work with your natural hair's texture and aim for natural, loose, beachy waves - not bouncy curls or dead straight hair." Hit the beach with tresses that turn heads. And if you don't have naturally mermaid-esque locks, fake it with amplifying potions. Here's how to tease, tousle and transform your hair for high summer.
9 8 J U LY 2 0 1 3
H E A LT H & B E AU T Y LONGER LOCKS Mermaids aren't known for their bobs or crops. Hair grows roughly an inch every two months, and if you're craving longer hair you need to review your maintenance. "e key to hair growth is scalp health and condition," says hair stylist Errol Douglas MBE. "It should be clean and neither too dry or oily. ere are lots of treatments available to correct and regulate the scalp." Trims are still essential but Douglas advises asking your stylist for a 'dusting' instead of a trim or cut. He explains: "It's literally a method where just the tiniest particles are removed from the ends. Foods rich in amino acids help the production of keratin, hair's natural protein, which will assist in it growing fuller and stronger." Hydrate the hair regularly to avoid breakage and use heat protectants every time styling tools are used. Length can be ageing as you get older but it's often the change in texture that's the giveaway. "If my clients are reluctant to let go of length, I advise face-framing layers that soften the face and break up the coarser texture of hair as we grow older," Douglas suggests.
TRIED & TESTED Create instant beachy hair texture with a salt spray. Our testers spritz with three products: TRESemme Texture Style Tousled Wave Spray, £5.50 e spray action felt untargeted and not a lot seemed to reach my hair. I liked the boosted beach texture, but my ends felt slightly sticky afterwards. 2/5
label.m Sea Salt Spray, £12.95 (labelm.com/uk) My hair felt bouncier and beachier immediately after a spritz of this and I loved the natural texture that didn't look or feel like I had used any product. Also comes in a handy travel-size to recreate the effect on an actual beach. 5/5 Catwalk by TIGI Session Series Salt Spray, £14.25 (www.tigihaircare.com) I loved the perfumed smell of this product. e spray was super-light and non-sticky in texture and resulted in instant loose waves after scrunching loosely with fingers. 4/5 n
TEXTURE TONICS Look to beach, salt or texturising sprays to help you achieve beachy waves in an instant. ey may have different names but they all do the same hair-boosting job as though you've been tumbling in waves. "ese sprays give a matte, earthy texture to the hair," explains Gill Berry, of Structure hair. "It's excellent on short, choppy styles, but also long, wavy and curly hair as it gives excellent volume, while adding strength and definition." e more spray you use, the more the hold factor increases. For a lighter finish, spray onto your hands and scrunch the product into your hair. For greater hold and texture, spray directly onto the hair. If your hair is uber-straight, promote a wavier look with curling tongs. Spritz a beach spray onto clean, damp hair and rough dry, then use a curling wand to wave random sections from the mid-lengths to the ends. Berry says: "You're not after a neat finish, more of a messy, slightly dishevelled look." BRAIDY BUNCH Look to plaits for practical beach style. ey scrape your hair off the face in the heat and unravel to reveal beachy kinks once they're undone. Go for braids if you also want to hide a multitude of hair sins, like greasy roots or frizziness once you've taken a dip. Norris Ogario, founder of Ogario London salon, says: "Braids and pretty plaits always make an appearance at this time of year but this season there's a shift towards multiple braids. "Very cute and easy to do, simply plait your hair when wet and leave until nearly dry. At this stage, loosen your locks to reveal soft casual waves and add in some plaits around the side of the face." To avoid looking too neat and 'done', mess up the plaits a little to give them a fluffy feel, leaving some of them looser than others. e tighter the plait, the tighter the wave. If you prefer a relaxed look, stick to one or two loose plaits.

Light up your home B Lighting can make a huge difference to a room, affecting how we use a space and whether it feels roomy or cosy. Here’s how to get it right…
efore installing or updating lights, think about how you use each room during the day. A lounge may double-up as an office, the children might need to do their homework on the dining table in the evening or you might use the guest bedroom as a hobby space at night. Multi-functional rooms need to offer ambient as well as task lighting, while open plan living areas may even use pools of light as ‘zones’ in the absence of walls. A flexible scheme where the focus and light levels can be adjusted throughout the day is key - dimmers are ideal as they create mood and allow the room to work from day to night. Kitchen lighting While a central pendant will provide general lighting, a kitchen requires good task lighting in work areas, especially where you’ll be cooking. Task lighting should be positioned to the side or behind where you’re working – not in front. Many modern kitchen cabinets and cooker hoods come with built-in lights but adding them to existing ones is relatively easy and needn’t be expensive. Mini fluorescent lights can be picked up at most DIY stores (an eight-watt bulb in warm white should work well) and look great when fitted underneath wall units. If you have a central pendant over a dining table, choose one with a flexible cord, which can be pulled down for task lighting when required. To avoid re-wiring, consider fitting a track system with directional lights to highlight the work surface and the sink. While they might take more work to install, ceiling downlights can be placed where needed and because they recessed won’t get covered in grease and dirt. Bathroom lighting In a bathroom, task lighting is important where you need to see clearly, but think about adding feature lighting to create atmosphere. Consider adding recessed LED 1w Lucca spotlights into alcoves or back-lighting an opaque bath panel. Light behind the bath with waterproof LED 1w Lucca Exterior uplights or use an LED Contour strip under a basin so that it appears to float or use it to backlight shelves. Just take care that any fittings used are completely encased and never be tempted to use a conventional light fitting that’s not intended for bathroom use. With a little imagination, the right lighting really can transform every room in the house. Living room lighting Background or ambient lighting plays the part of daylight and is most
1 0 4 J U LY 2 0 1 3
often provided by a central pendant light – but if used alone, can create a very flat effect. Think about layering the light. One ceiling light will cast shadows, whereas having lamps dotted around will highlight all areas and make the room more welcoming.” How to make a hallway warm. The lounge is where we’re most likely to use accent lighting - to show off an artwork, ornaments, or even a plant. Think carefully when positioning lights - don’t place downlighters at either end of a sofa if you may change the room layout. Similarly, wall lights are best positioned either side of a fixed feature, like a fireplace. A standing lamp can look good behind the sofa or next to an armchair. For reading, the light should be placed to one side, behind and above the chair and take a 60 watt bulb at least – remembering that a 60-year-old requires 15 times more light for reading than a teenager. Watching TV in total darkness can cause eye strain, so place a light behind or beside the television, avoiding anything too bright which could cause glare on the screen. To make a room appear larger, light all four corners with spotlights or table lamps, in addition to a main pendant light. Wall washers, which flood light on to the wall and ceiling, will make the room seem taller. To make a room feel longer place lights at one end, to attract the eye along it.” Hallway Halls are often dark and lighting can be used to make a warm and welcoming entrance, as well as ensuring safety on the stairs. Create drama by over-scaling a decorative pendant and dimming this for mood, used in conjunction with Polespring LED downlights. Try lighting the stairs themselves using recessed spotlights and ensure the main overhead light is at the top of the stairs rather than the bottom to reduce the risk of accidents. Bedroom lighting Most people like bedrooms to be bright in the morning and atmospheric in the evening. Use a High CRI Contour Strip to uplight above a wardrobe for a fresh bright effect that can be dimmed in the evening or use a run of Polespring LEDs to light the front of wardrobes or highlight the headboard. Don’t forget to have downlights on a separate control so you can turn them off from bed. Bedside table or wall lights are ideal for reading – choose shades that are white on the inside and a warm colour outside, and fit with a clear bulb to provide a warm glow.

Make an entrance! How to create a welcoming hallway E
The hallway is the first room guests see in a house. Make yours warm and welcoming with our inspirational design tips and advice…
ntrance ways tend to be dark and narrow but painting them white isn’t necessarily the best option. “Hallways, especially busy family ones, can take a lot of wear of tear and white be very unforgiving, as well as cold, so a better option, is to choose a light, bright colour in a warm tone. Choose a colour that is a shade or two lighter than the main room the hallway leads to, and it will help create continuity between the two spaces. As this room is primarily a walk-through, you can afford to make a strong design statement and be bold with colour and pattern. Patterned wallpaper with a slight shine will help reflect the light, while vertical stripes can create the illusion of height. If you’re concerned about knocks and scratches, a practical option is to have painted wood panelling on the bottom of the wall, with statement wallpaper above. Feature flooring Flooring in a hallway needs to be durable but choose wisely and you can create impact while being practical too. If you have a particularly long and narrow hallway, a chequerboard effect on the floor will create the impression of width - the wider the tiles, the wider it will look. Hallway runners are a great way to inject colour, while colourful striped carpet will instantly enliven a stairway. If you have bare wooden stairs, consider painting each step a different shade of the same colour or have fun with stencils to create patterns or words. Let the light in Hallways can often be dark, so getting the lighting right is essential. If you
1 0 6 J U LY 2 0 1 3
have a high ceiling, a large pendant light will act as a beautiful centrepiece and be the first thing that people see when they enter your home. If the ceiling is low, pendant lights will have the effect of making the room feel smaller, so wall lights are the better option. Mirrors are a good way to reflect natural light and give the illusion of more space. A large mirror placed at the end of a hallway instantly provides depth, making a hallway feel larger. Storage solutions Hallways can easily become cluttered so finding a space for coats, keys and shoes is a must. A wooden bench with storage If you have room, offers storage as well as a useful seating area. The more floor space you can see, the larger your hallway will seem and there are lots of great wall-hung cupboards available. Make a feature Hallways may be small but that doesn’t mean you can’t create a stunning focal point. A narrow console table with a pair of lamps and mirror above makes a pretty focal point - while a vase of fresh flowers or a scented cinnamon candle will create an inviting aroma. A group of family portraits is another great way to add interest and personalise the space. Generally, it’s best to hang fewer, larger pictures as opposed to several smaller ones, as it can make the space seem more confined and cluttered. With a little imagination and the right colours, storage and lighting, you can create an inviting entrance you’ll love coming home to and will want to show off.

The World’s Richest Splash out on properties in London’s most exclusive areas Owning a piece of London’s prime real estate is something most can only dream of or achieve by winning the Lottery.
T
he average price of a home in these areas is £1.12million, which given the average wage would take most people 56 years - without spending a penny on anything else - to pay it off. And yet, remarkably, at a time when the average wage is dropping in real terms, prime London property has pulled through the crisis with barely a scratch to show - regularly clocking double digit annual growth. In fact, the capital’s housing market has even been credited with single-handedly propping up the rest of the country. Property in the City of Westminster alone, the richest of the capital’s boroughs, is worth a staggering £95 billion, more than twice that of Edinburgh and almost three times more than Bristol. But where is all this wealth coming from, and why is it all being piled into London’s top homes? International lure In large, part the money is piling in from overseas. Agents estimate that around two thirds of the buyers snapping up homes are foreign. And more than £18 billion of international cash has been injected into the market since 2007, according to Savills. Russians, Italians,

French and the Chinese are the four largest investing groups. Many of these buyers don’t even have to leave their country to pick up a piece of prime property, as agents and developers set up overseas exhibitions marketing investments, particularly in the Far East. Contract lawyers are on hand so property can change hands in one swift transaction. As a result, Chinese and Pacific Asian make up around 80% of buyers new-build properties over £5 million. Meanwhile, heads of oil and gas rich states in the Middle East are a significant group alongside African oil traders and business tycoons, according to Peter Wetherell a West End property specialist. Royal families from the Middle East and Asia will typically spend between £50-£100 million on residential property in London’s West End, often owning up to a dozen residential properties with the largest and most modern being allocated to the head of the family.” The London status symbol Around half of buyers are looking for somewhere to live and want to be in London simply because of the connotations and opportunities it has.

In terms of political power, quality of life, economic activity and knowledge and influence, London is second only to New York as the most important city to the global rich, according to Knight Frank. And based on global sentiment and attitude alone, the British capital rises to top the tables, thanks to its closer proximity to wealth hubs in the Middle East and Russia. The small number of opportunities to buy has also bolstered demand. On average, property only changes hands once every 40 years in central London boroughs. In part this is thanks to strict planning and conservation laws in central London. Most buildings can’t be built any higher than surrounding levels. “The stock just isn’t available, people hold on to their property, which creates desirability,” said Naomi Heaton, chief executive of residential investment specialists London Central Portfolio (LCP). The cosmopolitan nature of the city is also important according to Heaton, whose clients are almost 100% international. “People like and feel welcome in London, in a way that they don’t in Paris or New York,” she said. In light of global financial problems, the economic and political stability of the UK has further boosted demand. On top of shaky markets, Heaton points to the Arab spring and Greek crisis as points when investors were fast looking to take money out of other countries and put it in haven. In a double lure, the value of sterling has plummeted, which means that the cost of buying has barely increased at all for some nationalities. Can it continue? The soaring property prices of prime London are having a knockon effect on the rest of the city – starting from the top down.
“Traditionally, ultra high-net worth international investors and sovereign funds only consider AAA addresses in Knightsbridge, Belgravia and Mayfair,” said Ollie Marshall from Brooks Gordon. “However, given the lack of investment opportunities in these postcodes, there has been a migration of wealth outwards to other prime locations such as Kensington and Chelsea, Westminster and beyond, which offer better value for money.” The concentration of wealth has created a chasm between London and the rest of Britain overall. The average property price in London overall is double the national average of £161,458. It also seriously affects the prospects of those trying to get on the ladder, resulting in the average first-time buyer in London now being aged 38, according to Moneysupermarket. But even if the average property price in Kensington and Chelsea now tops £1.12 million it seems demand for prime London property is showing no sign of tapering. “We have only seen the tip of the iceberg with the Chinese,” said LCP’s Heaton who also points to the strengthening currency of Malaysia and Thailand as bringing more buyers through the door.Property taxes and soaring prices in the Far East also make London seem like a relative bargain in comparison. Earlier this year, MPs rejected a so-called mansion tax on transactions worth £2 million or more, which many fared could deter the overseas cash flow. At least for the foreseeable future it seems there is little to stop the world’s rich splashing out on a pad in London. J U LY 2 0 1 3 1 1 5

The Rise of the Personal Property Assistant Toni Griffin, owner of Boutique Property Management based in Hampstead, discusses the booming London market and why investors are increasingly calling upon the services of a personal property assistant.
L
ondon’s property market is on the upswing, and figures show that foreign investors are driving this boom. London’s status as a global financial centre and world city makes it an attractive investment, with London recently topping the Christie’s International Real Estate index as the world’s most important city for luxury residential real estate. In fact, latest figures show that foreign buyers now outnumber Britons when it comes to London properties in the £2 million plus range. So why are foreign investors attracted to the London market? Toni explains that, “the UK is seen as having a relatively stable political system, a sound legal system and well regarded educational establishments. Added to this, the current weakness in sterling compared to other currencies is advantageous to overseas purchasers, and renting out property is achieving good rental yields”. The challenge she says “is that many property investors are time poor and managing their property portfolios can be hugely time consuming”. There are now several small niche businesses in London servicing clients who are maintaining or growing their property portfolios and require a bespoke approach to managing their property portfolios. Toni Griffin is one such enterprising individual who recognised the need for a personal property assistant service. “My clients don’t want high street estate agents or large concierge organisations, they want one point of contact, and they want someone they trust implicitly to look after their home or investment. My service is completely bespoke,

whether it’s a weekly house check (collecting mail, checking on security), preparing the house for the arrival of owners or visiting relatives, or managing tenants, I take care of a client’s every property need”. So who are the types of people demanding this service? Toni explains that the majority of her clients are time poor, internationally mobile, and juggling very busy lives. They expect one point of contact and require someone they can trust to take the initiative with their properties. “I have one client who travels constantly”, says Toni, “when she returns home, she wants the lights on, the house warm and food in the fridge”. Another of her clients only uses his second home during the summer months. “Essentially, I offer him peace of mind, rather than worrying about what might be going on with his property I update him weekly on what is happening. Even if it’s just to report that everything is fine, he likes to know that there is someone keeping a close eye on things”. Toni chooses to manage only a select number of properties to ensure that she delivers a truly personal service. She is currently accepting clients; you can contact her today to discuss your bespoke property needs.
