In our beautiful countryside setting students thrive, building strong friendships, developing academically and personally, and enjoying a vibrant evening and weekend activity programme. Sports every day and a balance of lessons and activities empower students to approach all their commitments with a positive outlook. Nearly all (97%) students represent the school in sports fixtures, with no particular sport being compulsory. Lasting and fulfilling friendships are forged, and everyone has the chance to get to know one another. Class sizes are very small –

even by independent schools’ standards – so no one is overlooked or left behind. With one of the broadest curriculums in the independent sector, we offer a unique blend of traditional and vocational qualifications designed to inspire students and prepare them for positive futures. An innovative ‘carousel curriculum’ allows joining Third Form pupils to study core subjects throughout the year, while sampling a huge range of courses usually only available as GCSEs or BTEC Level 2. This helps them to make informed course choices for study in later years and to have agency in their academics. The Sixth Form provides a wide range of academic, technical, and vocational courses including A Levels and BTECs. We focus on developing not only academic skills but also the attitudes and habits that lead to lifelong achievement. Our dedicated teaching and boarding staff are committed to helping every student achieve their personal best, both inside and outside the classroom. At Milton

Abbey School, your child will be equipped with the skills to succeed in a fast‑changing world. Last summer our students headed off to an exciting range of university courses including Biochemistry at Warwick, Agriculture at Royal Agricultural University, Film Production at Winchester, Ancient History at King’s College London, Sustainable Design at Falmouth, Economics at York, Law at Exeter, Zoology at Bangor, Games Design at Howest in Belgium, Business at the University of Michigan and courses in Fashion with Conde Nast and Hotel Management at Les Roches, Switzerland, to name a few! We celebrate the individual and encourage them to follow their passions and find pathways that suit them beyond school life. Milton Abbey School is a deliberately small community of students, so that every child is known and can build lasting

friendships. Predominantly British, we are proud to welcome our international students come from over 24 nationalities, making up 30% of the school, which is proudly cosmopolitan in a stunning rural Capability Brown designed landscape. We award around £1 million of scholarships and bursaries each year to celebrate pupils who will be positive and active participants in Milton Abbey School life. Scholarships range from 10% to 95% for both day and boarding pupils, with all fee awards over 30% being subject to means-testing of family income. We offer full visits, introductory mornings, experience days and scholarship assessments for 10‑16 years olds and would be delighted to welcome your child into our unique admissions process. miltonabbey.co.uk

he Russell-Cotes Art Gallery & Museum, Bournemouth, is thrilled to announce the opening of Artists in Purbeck: Spirit of Place, the first exhibition dedicated solely to artists who captured the essence of Purbeck, Dorset, since the beginning of the 20th century. The Isle of Purbeck, Dorset, has captivated artists for centuries. It’s fascinating variety of landscapes has inspired a wide range of artistic styles and subjects. This groundbreaking exhibition, co-curated by Dr. Gill Clarke MBE (co-author of Shorelines: Artists on the South Coast) and the Russell-Cotes, will showcase a rich collection of artworks drawn from the museum’s permanent holdings, alongside significant loans from private and regional collections, including the Government Art Collection, Southampton City Art Gallery, and Pallant House Gallery. It also brings together works from local collections, including Dorset Museum, Poole Museum, Corfe Castle Museum, Langton Matravers Museum and Swanage Museum. The exhibition is organised thematically, exploring distinct aspects of Purbeck through the lens of the artists’ work, from quarries and quarrying to the advent of Purbeck as a destination for leisure and tourism. It will also focus on notable landmarks and villages, such as Corfe Castle, Clavell Tower overlooking Kimmeridge

Bay and the Great Globe at Swanage. In addition to the ‘manmade follies’, unique geological wonders like rock formations and dramatic cliffs provided a fascinating subject for artists interested in capturing the history and character of the natural Purbeck landscape. While curating the exhibition, curator Dr Gill Clarke remarked: ‘It’s no wonder artists have been attracted to and captivated by the spectacular coastline, varied landscape and picturesque villages.’ Beyond the visual feast, Purbeck offers a sense of peace and tranquillity, a stark contrast to the bustling city life many artists were accustomed to. This tranquillity fostered both introspective and evocative works that captured essence and the spirit of the place. Sarah Newman, Manager at the Russell-Cotes, said: ‘We are delighted to present this exhibition, which celebrates the rich artistic legacy of Purbeck. The artists featured in this show have captured the unique beauty and character of this region in a truly inspiring way. We invite visitors to join us on this journey through time and discover the extraordinary works of art that have been inspired by Purbeck.’ Featuring over 70 works, the exhibition provides a unique opportunity to explore the Isle of Purbeck over time, through the eyes of artists who capture its ever evolving beauty. Artists in Purbeck: Spirit of Place opened on Saturday 12 October 2024 at the Russell-Cotes Art Gallery & Museum, Bournemouth, and runs until 16 March 2025. russellcotes.com

Behind the Scenes of The New Forest

ehind the scenes of the New Forest there’s a dedicated and eclectic mix of people, each helping to care for the Forest’s landscape, wildlife and habitats. From commoners, ecologists and archaeologists to farmers, community volunteers and Forest keepers, they work tirelessly year-round to keep it the special place it is. The New Forest National Park Authority’s ‘Behind the Scenes’ campaign taps into this knowledge and passion, aiming to show a side of the New Forest that often goes unseen. Meet Forestry England ranger Charlotte Belcher: ‘The New Forest is such a special place because of the rich mix of habitats that we have here, from the ancient woodlands to the beautiful heathland that’s home to many rare species of wildlife. It’s got so much history and heritage behind it as well. And culturally, it has such a significance to many people who live and work in the area. ‘The role of the rangers is really at the forefront of trying to achieve that harmony between people and nature, helping people to connect with the outdoors and enjoy it in a responsible way. If people don’t experience and appreciate the wildlife that’s here, then they’re never going to want to protect it. ‘If everybody really wants to help protect this special place, then the most simple thing they could do is to follow the New Forest code.’ Catherine Chatters is the New Forest Non-Native Plants Officer at Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust. She said: ‘The New Forest is a very special place as it’s an extraordinary survivor of a medieval landscape and pastoral economy, supporting one of the greatest concentrations of wildlife in the lowlands of north-west Europe. ecologically rich and varied habitats including heathlands, ancient woodlands, grasslands, valley mires, rivers and ponds support an abundance of species. ‘In addition to the challenges caused by development and recreational pressures, the New Forest is threatened by the spread of invasive non-native plants, which can out-compete the native vegetation. ‘Working for Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust as the New Forest Non-Native Plants Officer I am privileged to play a part in helping to protect the New Forest, in partnership with landowners and our wonderful volunteers. ‘Everyone can help to stop the spread of invasive non-native plants by disposing of surplus garden and pond plants responsibly – please don’t dump them in the countryside.’ Volunteer Fair returns! Save the date! The area’s largest volunteering event, the New Forest Volunteer Fair, is back on Sunday 26 January 2025 at Brockenhurst Village Hall. RESIDENT THRIVES AT ‘JOYOUS’ NEW MARJORIE HOUSE CARE HOME NEAR SANDBANKS

RESIDENTS ENJOYING COFFEE ON THE BALCONY AT MARJORIE HOUSE’

A

resident at a new care home near Sandbanks is thriving in the ‘joyous atmosphere’ since moving in. June was one of the first residents to move into Marjorie House care home on Crichel Mount Road following its launch event in September this year. Formerly living in Poole and briefly in a London care home, June wanted to return to the stunning view she once enjoyed, coupled with round-the-clock care provided by the team at Marjorie House. June said: “It’s the nicest place I could imagine. I just sit in my chair on the balcony overlooking Poole Harbour, and I’m in heaven. The atmosphere here is joyous.” She praised the dedicated staff, highlighting their quick response and teamwork, saying “Nothing is too much trouble for them. They’re very good.” June, who experienced weight loss in her previous care home, now enjoys every meal at Marjorie House. “Here, I’m well-fed with nutritionally-balanced, beautifully presented meals. Breakfast often looks like a flower, and it’s delicious,” she said. Since her arrival, June has rediscovered her creativity. Inspired by 30 DECEMBER 2024

a conversation with one of the care home’s chefs, Leslie, she began painting and writing rhyming poetry. “I’ve been here three months, and at last, I’m getting my creativity back,” she added. Marjorie House features 50 ensuite, fully-furnished bedrooms in a variety of sizes, styles and beautiful views across Poole Harbour towards Brownsea Island. Each floor features dining and activity spaces, lounges with stunning views, and private areas. The first floor includes the Captain’s Club bar for residents and visitors, plus a hair and beauty salon. Outdoor options include balconies, terraced gardens, a courtyard, and a small putting green for relaxation and enjoyment. The restaurant doors were opened on 13th September 2023 after a total refurbishment of the premises. Thirteen features contemporary British cuisine combining seasonal locally sourced and freshly foraged ingredients, wherever possible, with innovative cooking techniques from around the world. The menu includes carefully sourced fish, meat and game but also celebrates the importance of vegetables, fruits and fungi. Many vegetables, fruits, edible flowers and herbs are sourced from our own kitchen garden at the restaurant. Numerous sauces and stocks will be based on vegetarian or vegan ingredients so dishes can easily accommodate dietary preferences with advance notice. We offer wine pairings with our tasting menus or diners can select wines from our wine list. Our evening service features a signature 13 plate tasting menu consisting of individual plates, starting with a series of snacks, followed by a selection of larger savoury plates, and concluding with desserts.

ROSEMEAD WINS PRESTIGIOUS NATIONAL AWARD Dulwich’s leading prep school triumphs at ISA awards for Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion

R

osemead Preparatory School and Nursery is delighted to reveal it has won an award at the prestigious Independent Schools Association (ISA) Awards 2024. The school, located in the heart of Dulwich, has been awarded for Excellence and Innovation in Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion at the ceremony which took place in November at the ISA Autumn Conference in Birmingham. Speaking about the award, Head Graeme McCafferty explained: ‘The whole school is thrilled to receive this award from the ISA. This recognition reaffirms our commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion, and I couldn’t be prouder of our school’s achievement. ‘At Rosemead, we are devoted to creating an inclusive, safe environment through quality first teaching and adapting resources. Cooperation and compassion allow our community to thrive. We aim to collaborate with our whole community to broaden our children’s experience and make learning accessible for all. Our goal is to create a sense of involvement, harmony, unity and membership.’ Rudolf Eliott Lockhart, Chief Executive Officer of the Independent Schools Association (ISA), added: “Once again, the ISA

Awards have been a celebration of the innovative approaches to education from across the full range of our diverse membership. The broad selection of represented categories reflects the breadth of accomplishments by our schools; there is the potential for every type of school to excel within them. ‘A place among the finalists, as well as being highly commended, is a great achievement. This year featured an impressive range of entries, and the final nominees were strong.’ Last year, the school announced a merger with St Dunstan’s College joining St Dunstan’s Education Group. St Dunstan’s Group Head, Nick Hewlett, said: ‘The whole community is delighted with this ISA award for Rosemead. The award rightly recognises the outstanding work and ongoing commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion at the school. ‘Bringing our schools together has been a wonderful opportunity, allowing our staff and students to work closer together, learning from one another and enhancing our students’ educational journeys.’ This is the second prestigious award for Rosemead. Earlier this year, the school won best Improvements in EDIB (Equality, Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging) at the Education Choices Awards. A spokesperson for the Education

Choices Awards added: ‘We have been really impressed with the work that schools have been getting up to this year in order to envelop Equality, Diversity and Inclusion into their curriculums and work, and it has been really tough to decide each winner.’ The two awards follow the school’s ISI inspection that took place last year, and saw Rosemead become one of the first prep schools in the country to receive a ‘significant strength’ in its findings. ‘A highly customised approach to every pupil’s academic progress is a significant strength of the school,’ the report explained. ‘A customised learning programme in mathematics, English and reasoning caters for pupils in Year 4 and above. This, supported by an extensive enrichment programme and much support for individuals, impacts on all groups of pupils, enabling them to make good and often rapid progress over time.’ Rosemead’s early years’ provision was also praised in the summary findings. ‘Leaders in the early years effectively ensure staff have high expectations of the behaviour and achievement of children,’ the report found. ‘The positive relationships between adults and children in the

early years help children settle in quickly and feel safe and happy.’ It added: ‘Children in the early years achieve well from their varied starting points. Adults engage with the children effectively and use appropriate questioning to develop children’s vocabulary and understanding. Children from an early age become confident speakers and develop their reading skills well.’ Find out more about Rosemead’s award-winning education at their upcoming open morning on Tuesday 28 January 2025. Tragically 277 students and teachers lost their lives during the war. St Dunstan’s Rivers of Poppies display was once again installed at the front of the College featuring more than 750 poppies. The display is made up of two rivers of poppies hanging down the side of the front building. A day earlier, St Dunstan’s College Combined Cadet Force (CCF) attended the annual Lewisham Remembrance Parade, marking an especially proud moment as they formed a colour party for the first time. In full CCF uniform, the cadets marched alongside service personal and other community groups, paying tribute to the servicemen and women who sacrificed so much. Speaking about the parade, Contingent Commander Richard Davies said: ‘Leading their respective sections congratulations go to both the Coxswain and RSM

Special mention also goes to Imani and Alyssa who laid wreaths on behalf of the College after everyone observed a moment of silence, reflecting St Dunstan’s deep commitment to remembrance and to instilling values of respect and service in the next generation.’ Next year, St Dunstan’s CCF will travel to Ypres, Belgium, to take part in the daily Last Post ceremony at the Menin Gate Memorial. KATE MOSS’ NEW ZARA COLLECTION

The supermodel is collaborating with the Spanish high-street store to create a capsule collection. By Lara Owen 66 DECEMBER 2024

T

wo fashion power houses have collided as Nineties style icon Kate Moss and the highstreet retailer Zara collaborate for a series of high-profile capsule staples. The Zara X Kate Moss collection launches on 30th November in store and online, and will comprise of ready-to-wear pieces and accessories intended for a big night out. Styled by Katy England, a fashion stylist known for her extensive work for Alexander McQueen, the collection blends classic cuts and grunge glamour. Moss said that she wanted to create “the perfect party capsule [with] pieces that feel effortlessly chic, but with an edge.” This is the first time Moss has collaborated on a fashion collection in 10 years, since launching her second Topshop collection back in 2014. Since then, Moss has had various business forays, such as launching her eponymous talent agency in 2016 and a beauty brand called Cosmoss in 2022. Moss’ first clothing collaboration with a high-street store was in 2007, when the supermodel co-created and designed a fashion collection for Topshop that also sold through retailers including Barneys New York. The collection created a frenzy of fashion lovers. A Moss “countdown to launch” board was erected in Topshop’s Oxford Street store window, and on 30th April, Moss launched her line by briefly appearing in the window modelling a red dress from the collection. This collection was quintessentially Moss: featuring boho vests and one-shoulder minidresses alongside grunge-y skinny jeans and cropped leather jackets. Moss continued to design for the high street brand until 2010, when she turned her focus to more high-end retailers, such as designing handbags for the French label Longchamp. But following the monumental success of her first line, Moss returned to Topshop for a one-off collection in 2014, and on the day it launched she appeared at Oxford Street once again in a black and gold tuxedo suit. The event drew hordes of shoppers hoping to catch a glimpse of the supermodel – fans are undoubtedly crossing their fingers for a re-enactment for the 2024 Zara launch. With Moss’ Nineties party-girl past – there is no doubt that this collection will focus on the trademark slips, sparkles and bohemian blouses the model is famed for. As a partywear collection, Moss’ iconic leopard print will surely feature, whether it be in the form of clothing or accessories. Moss said this collection mixes “classic cuts with just the right amount of glam to take you through the party season.” There’s no doubt it will bring a new edge to this season’s party wardrobe. How your beauty products

are affecting your sleep Y our night time routine may consist of a quick cleanse and a dash of moisturiser – or perhaps it involves lighting a scented candle. However you prepare for bed, this night time ritual has a crucial impact on the quality of your

sleep. “The products we use in our evening skincare routines can influence not only the condition of our skin but also our ability to relax and wind down,” explains organic beauty expert and Green People founder, Charlotte Vøhtz. “Harsh products with synthetic fragrances or active ingredients like exfoliating acids can be overstimulating or irritating, which could make it more challenging to relax before bed.” Certified dermatologists and beauty experts break down the perfect beauty routine for a restful night’s sleep.

What can help you sleep

When you think of night time scents, perhaps lavender or chamomile spring to mind. This is for good reason, as these two flowers are both nervines (herbs that specifically help support the nervous system). Both lavender and chamomile are considered fragrant relaxants and contain essential oils that help relieve stress and support sleep. “Valerian, vetiver, clary sage, sandalwood and ylang ylang are also relaxing-inducing plants,” says skin expert and Ultrasun founder, Abi Cleeve. “Aromatherapy – be it in bath salts, pillow sprays or even candles – can massively help with relaxation,” says Lucy Goff, founder of LYMA – the skincare label coveted by the likes of Gwyneth Paltrow and Meghan Markle. Whilst what we breathe in is an important instigator for falling asleep, the quality of it also depends on what we ingest. “Supplements can improve sleep quality,” says Goff.

Minerals such as magnesium glycinate in particular relaxes both the nervous system and your muscles. “A clinical trial found magnesium could also reduce anxiety by up to 31%,” says dermatologist, Dr Sonia Khorana, from Hero Cosmetics. “Vitamin D, Valerian, melatonin and ashwagandha are also ingredients to look out for for improved sleep quality.” Having experienced sleep deprivation herself, Goff developed her own supplement, “It has key patented ingredients that enhance aspects of brain function to improve sleep quality,” she says, “it’s designed to move away from ‘knock-you-out sedatives’ that compromise daytime function.”

Products to avoid – from eye creams to exfoliants

We know that caffeine and blue light (emitted by phone and TV screens) can trick our brains into thinking it’s daytime by prohibiting the release of melatonin, the sleep hormone. But caffeine isn’t just found in coffee. SOME EYE CREAMS AND EYE PATCHES CAN CONTAIN CAFFEINE AND AFFECT SLEEP

“Some beauty products, like eye creams or serums, contain caffeine to reduce puffiness or dark circles,” says Vøhtz. “These products may interfere with your ability to fall asleep if applied too late in the evening.” It’s not just your eye cream that could impact your sleep; chemical exfoliants can also disrupt your rest. “Exfoliators containing AHAs or BHAs can make the skin more sensitive or irritated, especially at night,” says Vøhtz. “If your skin is inflamed or sensitised, it could prevent you from getting comfortable and might not be ideal just before bed.” Alongside harsh ingredients, scent is a crucial aspect of your products that can interfere with your natural sleep cycle. “Uplifting fragrances such as citrus and jasmine are big ones to avoid,” says Cleeve, “they are great for sleepy mornings though!” Vøhtz notes that synthetic ingredients can also overstimulate your senses: “Synthetic fragrances in skincare products can cause sensitivities or headaches in some people, further disrupting your ability to wind down.”

the skin.” (Collagen is what keeps our skin plump). “If you have dry skin, use a rich night cream with hydrators such as hyaluronic acid and ceramides which lock in moisture,” says Khorana. At the end of a long day, slaving over a laborious skincare routine may be the last thing you want to do, but investing time in relaxing rituals can improve your energy in the long run, as Vøhtz says, “beauty sleep is more than just a saying.

An expert’s beauty routine for a good night’s sleep

While this may have left you checking the labels on your night creams, there’s a simple solution to reclaiming your beauty routine for a better night’s sleep. “Your skin enters a reparative phase while you sleep, so an effective skincare routine is crucial,” explains Khorana, who advises blocking out blue light at least two hours before bed. “I have a no tech after 8pm rule,” says Goff, “otherwise I’d be responding to emails all night. Instead, I use that time to unwind – I double cleanse using the LYMA Laser to drain away the day, so my skin is replenished and can start repairing itself as I go to bed.” When it comes to products, the experts recommend double cleansing to give your face a draining massage and to extract all impurities. “I recommend starting with a cleansing oil or balm, then follow with a gel to ensure skin is soft and clean,” says Khorana. “Follow with a retinoid serum – also known as vitamin A – as retinoid promotes faster cell turnover and has anti-ageing properties that improve fine lines, wrinkles and improve collagen stimulation in 70 DECEMBER 2024

A WILDE OLFACTORY JOURNEY

N

early three centuries ago, Juan Famenias Floris crafted his first fragrance, recording the formula in a substantial leather-bound book. Over the years, he created personalised scents for his esteemed clientele including Florence Nightingale, James Bond creator Ian Flemming, Marylin Monroe, Queen Victoria and more, each new formula meticulously handwritten into this same book. This record, preserved for generations at 89 Jermyn Street, has inspired the Floris fragrances crafted today, forming an essential link to our origins. The Floris shop at 89 Jermyn Street in London’s St. James’s district has always been at the heart of the brand. Here, Floris and his wife, Elizabeth, began offering perfumes, combs, and shaving essentials to London’s elite. To this day, the shop proudly displays its original Spanish mahogany cabinets, purchased from the 1851 Great Exhibition. Now, nine generations on, Floris remains a proudly independent family brand, with its eighth and ninth generation at the helm. While Floris honours its heritage, our approach to fragrance creation embraces the contemporary, inspired by experiences that resonate with the present. We create emotions by layering fragrance oils like brushstrokes, finding harmony between timeless materials and modern inspirations. Heritage comes with the beauty of longevity and passion. It’s very rare to be able to step back in time without having the passing of eras decay and tarnish modern reinventions. Keeping integrity and compassion is an elegant dance between the then and now. A delicate balance shared between Floris and one of our beloved clientele, Oscar Wilde. Wilde visited the shop in the late 1800s to discuss with the family current local affairs and general happenings around Jermyn Street, and purchasing the original Malmaison Fragrance. Fashioned with dandy and finely polished sophistication, Wilde fastened a single green carnation to his lapel as the final accoutrement for the perfect soigné. A Parisian trend to identify oneself as homosexual. Wilde was a creative revolutionary of individuality, freedom and self. Forward thinking with ideals of the future that others had not yet thought about or embraced. His notions of love were expressed through his writing, most passionately, between himself and Sir Alfred Douglas, star-crossed lovers, forbidden to love. With the passing of time, the beauty of reincarnation, and the addition to the new Wilde Eau de Parfum, the Floris perfumers have also meticulously re-envisioned a staple of 19th century opulence and favourite of Oscar Wilde, Malmaison Encore. Malmaison Encore was inspired by the original Malmaison fragrance, an iconic scent which has remained one of the most popular fragrances in the Floris repertoire for almost 150 years. Malmaison Encore opens with a spicy blend of clove, cinnamon and zesty lemon, creating a warm and inviting top note. The floral bouquet of carnation, rose, and ylang ylang, build the romantic and sensual heart of the fragrance, while the base notes of cedarwood, musk and patchouli bring depth and sophistication leaving a lingering trail of captivating allure. JLo channels Princess Diana in Dior at London premiere of UNSTOPPABLE

THE ACTOR AND SINGER PAID HOMAGE TO DIANA’S FAVOURITE DESIGNER. BY LARA OWEN

J

ennifer Lopez sports quintessentially British style on the red carpet of her latest film, ‘Unstoppable’, in central London. The 55-year-old actor took to the premiere in head-to-toe Dior, wearing a white double-breasted overcoat, black polo neck and matching bucket hat. Lopez finished the look with a small black Lady Dior bag with gunmetal hardware, which takes its name from the late Princess of Wales. In true Lopez fashion, the star brought an edge to the outfit in backless, strappy kneehigh boots in black patent calfskin. The choice of bag was undoubtedly an homage to her habitat – sporting the same colour and design that Diana frequently carried around London. Introduced in 1995 by Dior, the Lady Dior was a signature piece of the Princess’ ensembles, and has remained one of the French fashion house’s perennial designs. Lopez’s chic and sophisticated style seems to be a product of her surroundings. The star wore a white turtle-neck Magda Butrym midi-dress with white Christian Louboutin pointed pumps and a Tyler Ellis pearl-white marbled Perry clutch at the film’s first London screening. Her pared-back and monochromatic approach conveys a new calm and confident era of fashion for Lopez. The actor’s clean lines and unfussy tailoring harks back to the sharply composed looks of Diana, such as her iconic ‘revenge dress’, which she paired with black pumps and white pearls. This is the Marry Me actor’s first film since filing for divorce from her husband, actor Ben Affleck, in August of this year. ‘Unstoppable’ is a biopic of the American wrestler, Anthony Robles, who won the 2011 NCAA individual wrestling national championship despite being born with only one leg. Set for a UK cinema release on December 6, JLo’s winter-themed ensemble perfectly sets the tone for the film’s seasonal debut.

SIENNA MILLER

DROPS NEW PARTY COLLECTION AT M&S

80 DECEMBER 2024

This is the British actor’s second collection with the high street retailer. By Lara Owen

I

n summer of this year, Sienna Miller launched the ultimate Boho-chic clothing line at M&S, with most pieces selling out within hours. Following its success, the 42-year-old actor has released a second collection with the British retailer, comprising of 35 partywear designs – arriving in stores just in time for the festive lead-up. Featuring romantic ruffles (quintessential to Miller’s free-spirited taste) luxurious satin, sequins and rich velvet, the designs are inspired by the days of disco and New York’s legendary nightclub, Studio 54. “I’d love to have partied with David Bowie,” says Miller, “back in the real heyday.” With animal print, wide-leg trousers and fitted waistcoats, the collection brings a retro edge to partywear. “No one partied like they did then,” Miller notes, “so I tried to capture that spirit.” Miller has long been hailed for her unique style, and has subsequently become the ‘it’ girl of Noughties Boho fashion. Her knack for styling led her to the launch of her own brand Twenty8Twleve in 2007 with her sister, Savannah Miller. The two later stepped down as cocreative directors in 2012. Yet Miller’s style influence continued long after the 2000s, with her red carpet and recurring Wimbledon looks garnering unparalleled attention. This collection therefore is anticipated to be another triumph for M&S, whose annual clothing and home sales have risen 5.3 per cent this year, increasing profits by 21 per cent. A shop once synonymous with trusty underwear and your grandparent’s wardrobe has undergone a rapid transformation thanks to it’s ‘quiet luxury’ and pared-back designs taking off among the under-30s. This collection is far from minimalist however, expressing the eclecticism and eccentricity of Miller’s own wardrobe. From cherry red dresses to tiger print clutches – there is sure to be a party piece for everyone in this hotly anticipated line. You can shop the line in M&s stores and online now.

HOW TO STAY CHIC IN THE SNOW

COS CABLE KNIT WOOL FUNNELNECK JUMPER, £95

HERE ARE EXPERT STYLE TIPS FOR COLD-WEATHER DRESSING. BY LARA OWEN

D

ressing both stylishly and practically is a tricky task to perfect, but with temperatures forecast to drop further, fashion insiders reveal their top tips for staying warm and looking chic in the snow…

LAYER UP

When it comes to layering, the key lies in quality over quantity. In order to maintain a sleek silhouette, you’ll want to invest in high-quality thermals that allow breathability whilst keeping you warm, and won’t bulk out your outfit. “Opt for thin, fitted base layers and use mid-layers that cinch at the waist, such as belted cardigans or tailored blazers, to define your shape,” says style and trends expert, Karine Laudort. “Then balance out proportions by pairing oversized outerwear – such as puffer coats or capes – with slimfitting trousers or leggings.”

DON’T INVEST IN A TREND

It can be tempting to splash out on a new luxe pair of snow boots the moment temperatures drop, but perhaps designer Moon Boots aren’t the way forward for an item you’ll only wear twice a year. “A classic black or tan leather boot will always look good and is one of the most versatile items in your wardrobe,” says House of Bruar’s creative director, Tom Birkbeck. “You can pair them with anything from casual trousers to feminine dresses with tights and thick socks – just make sure your boot has a strong grip on the bottom to avoid any accidents!” Laudort recommends opting for neutral tones when it comes to practical footwear, “neutral tones and simple designs are best for investment pieces, leaving bold patterns and unusual silhouettes for trend-driven choices.” 82 DECEMBER 2024

MIX TEXTURES

The easiest way to look chic whilst being bundled up is to mix and match textures whilst keeping the same colour tone. Natural materials such as leather and wool provide breathability whilst adding a touch of sophistication. Faux fur trims are an easy way to elevate an otherwise simple coat or outfit. “Start with a neutral base by pairing leather leggings or trousers with a simple wool turtleneck,” suggests Laudort. “Then layer by adding either a faux-fur gilet or scarf for a luxurious touch.” Laudort emphasises the importance of proportions, “There should also be balanced proportions, so try to mix heavy textures with lighter ones – for example, a sleek leather midi-skirt with a chunky-knit sweater.”

TOP IT OFF

The non-negotiables lie in the accessories. “Chunky scarves and gloves in luxe fabrics like cashmere or merino wool add warmth and elegance to your winter look,” says Laudort. The leading accessories trend for 2024 seems to be a combination of the hat and scarf, coming in the form of a balaclava. Opting for a bold colour or pattern is a great way to inject personality into your outfit. Accessories tend to be the most affordable pieces of a winter ensemble, meaning they’re easy to swap in for trend-led items. But if you’re looking to invest, Birkbeck suggests focusing on the material more so than the style. “Synthetic fabrics such as polyester and nylon are not as hardwearing as natural fabrics, so looking for items with a high wool count, for example, will ensure you have winter pieces that are built to last and can be worn year after year.” DECEMBER 2024 83

Take note of what’s in your wardrobe The trick to finding any particular style is to look at what you gravitate towards. Take a look in your wardrobe, if you see a lot of long sleeves or V-necks, then you should incorporate those shapes into your partywear pieces. When it comes to incorporating this season’s trends, the key is to vary the silhouette to best tailor your personal style. “This party season the key look is YSL’s ‘Le Smoking’,” explains celebrity and brand stylist Clare Chambers. “The beauty of this tuxedo-inspired style is that there is an iteration that suits everyone. “Whether you choose an oversized and longer tuxedo jacket or a shorter, more fitted one, you can pair this with

84 DECEMBER 2024

trousers, a satin skirt, over a dress or even jeans,” says Chambers. Similarly with colour, if you gravitate to neutrals such as taupe, cream and navy, then opt for champagne sequins or bronzed metallics. If you wear a lot of pattern, test out black watch tartan or a Fair Isle knit. 2. Have a Christmas toolkit Once you know the styles, shapes and colours you gravitate toward, having a few festive favourites in your arsenal can help you throw together a great outfit at the last minute. “A Christmas toolkit is a festive essential and can easily transform a day to drinks outfit,” says fashion expert and founder of Modes and More Vintage, Susie Nelson. “For accessories, opt for large earrings or a sparkly belt, bag or shoes. Velvet hair bows and embellished hairbands can also help,” Nelson explains. When it comes to clothes and patterns, Nelson suggests plaid or tartan for those not keen on the sequin route. 3. Play with textures Festive prints such as sequins, plaid or tartan are more difficult to have in your all-year-round wardrobe. Nelson therefore suggests experimenting more with texture to bring a touch of festive glamour.

HE PRINCESS OF WALES OFTEN WEARS FUR TRIMS TO INCORPORATE FESTIVE GLAMOUR INTO HER ENSEMBLES

SEASON STYLE This is a trick that the Princess of Wales often demonstrates on the annual Christmas Day service at St Mary Magdalene church, sporting velvet Alice bands and fur trims. Incorporating velvet, suede, corduroy or faux fur into your look can elevate an average winter outfit into some glamorous partywear. 4. Don’t compromise on comfort When someone says ‘partywear’ uncomfortable heels and scratchy sequins may spring to mind – but this needn’t be the case. “Focus on fabric and fit,” says London-based fashion stylist Karine Laudort. “Look for stretchy materials like jersey or luxe knits for a chic yet comfortable feel.” Laudort emphasises the importance of silhouettes, ensuring you opt for those you feel comfortable (and confident) in. “For example, midi dresses with a bit of stretch or wide-leg trousers with a tailored top are great options.” When it comes to footwear, Chambers suggests opting for flats or block heels, “As a general room of thumb, a pair of black suede block mid-heeled ankle boots are the most comfortable, because the fabric isn’t as restrictive as leather, and the block heel means that weight feels more evenly distributed. Plus suede seamlessly blends with black tights and is more flattering on bare legs.”

NEW LOOK BLACK BOW SEQUIN MINI BAG, £17.99 (WAS £23.99)

5. Never underestimate accessories “Most people have more outfits in their wardrobes and cupboards than they realise,” says Nelson. “With a bit of thought and imagination, nearly all outfits can be partied up with the addition of the right accessories”. It’s a universal truth that accessories are the quickest way to transform an outfit. “Think bold earrings, statement necklaces or a shimmering clutch to add instant glamour,” says Laudort. “The key accessory for party season 2024 is the sculptural hoop,” says Chambers. “Whether you choose gold or silver, this particular style of earring means that you do away with all other jewellery in order to let these be the impactful statement detail to your outfit.”

PRECIOUS TONES:

JEWEL INSPIRED FURNITURE

D

elve into the autumnal treasure chest with a bevy of soul achingly-rich, ultra-deep jewel tones that are adding some glamour to our interiors this season. Who needs gold, silver, platinum, or pearls when you can embrace the mesmerising allure of jewel tones? As the days grow shorter, we’re all about the deep, sumptuous hues of sapphires, emeralds and amethysts. These gemstone tones bring with them an undeniable sense of opulence, injecting rich colour into the home that elevates even the simplest of spaces as well as the murkiest of moods. An ideal antidote to the darker months, jewel shades not only exude luxury but also add a refreshing, mood-boosting vibrancy to rooms – far from the ordinary blues, greens, and purples, these tones offer an ultra-luxe take on colour that feels anything but traditional. Sapphire, with its deep, spellbinding blue, speaks of sophistication. Unlike classic dark blues, which can be cooler or more flat, sapphire tones add drama and elegance to a space. Whether in textiles,

96 DECEMBER 2024

accent pieces, or larger furniture, sapphire commands attention without overpowering, creating a serene-yet-stately ambiance. Its richness exudes grandeur, evoking images of sparkling crowns and heirloom jewellery as well as midnight skies and the depths of the ocean. Emerald, with its lush, natural quality, exudes a refreshing sense of vitality that echoes the beauty of nature. It’s a shade that’s simultaneously vibrant and grounding, bringing a verdant-yet-sumptuous mood to interiors. Especially effective in spaces which want to

evoke rejuvenation and calmness such as living rooms or bedrooms, emerald brings nature indoors with an indulgent twist. Amethyst offers a sweeter, more playful approach to the jewel palette. This rich purple hue introduces a touch of whimsy while maintaining an overall elevated and sophisticated ambiance, adding soft yet striking energy to a space. Whether used on accessories or larger focal points, amethyst in the home creates an enlivening sense of creativity and flair, its luxurious yet gentle vibe making it ideal for spaces which want to blend comfort with a touch of drama. Finally the rouge jewel in the crown. A colour long associated with royalty and riches, Ruby. A touch of scarlett magic can light a spark of excitement in any setting. Although its fiery flare often demands that it is used sparingly, ruby is the lifeblood of the home and cultivates a feeling of warmth whichever room it is used in. It is to be used at the ultimately homely hue and is best placed among the showstopping statement pieces. chaplins.co.uk

UNMATCHED HEALTH BENEFITS FOR MIND AND BODY

Winter often brings a drop in activity levels, which can leave you feeling sluggish, stressed and even prone to seasonal depression. This is where swimming steps in to save the day. Regular swimming offers excellent cardiovascular exercise, boosting circulation, heart health and overall fitness. The feeling of weightlessness in water reduces pressure on your joints, making swimming a gentle yet effective exercise, especially during colder months when outdoor activities tend to be more physically demanding. The rhythmic movements of swimming are also a fantastic way to clear your mind, helping you focus and calm your thoughts. Other noteworthy mental health benefits include improved sleep and reduced anxiety. Studies have shown that swimming helps release endorphins, the body’s natural mood elevators, fighting off the winter blues and leaving you feeling refreshed and energised.

CREATE YOUR PERSONAL WINTER WELLNESS RETREAT

Origin’s indoor pools don’t just focus on exercise; they create an atmosphere that fosters mental well-being, relaxation and stress relief. Integrating a sauna or steam room into your indoor pool area will take this experience to the next level, helping you relax, detoxify and improve your respiratory health—perfect for cold weather months. Origin’s pools provide a private, tranquil escape where you can prioritise your health and rejuvenate in peace. Whether swimming to release stress, practising yoga by the pool, or simply enjoying time with family, the benefits extend far beyond physical fitness.

Origin is committed to helping you make your home a sanctuary. INTERIOR TRENDS 2025:

STATEMENT MARBLE

S

tatement marble is set to transform interior trends for 2025. Dining furniture is being transformed with the introduction of stunning patterns and textures which evoke the beauty of nature. “When we talk about furniture styles in interior design - it’s usually always about the sofa. More recently, dining furniture is coming back into the spotlight. The introduction of statement stone and marble effect finishes are set to inspire homeowners looking to revamp their dining room in 2025. Dining tables are being transformed with the introduction of stunning patterns and textures which evoke the beauty of natural materials. The inspiration for these beautiful designs is the revival of neo-classical design in home décor. The Hellenistic Revival trend is heavily inspired by the style of Ancient Greece, which is opulent and extravagant. Think of accessories like classical busts, statues, oversized vases, Corinthian columns, all the fancy things you would see in an art museum. Marble or stone is a timeless material which simply emanates luxury - without much effort. It needs neither an introduction, or embellishment. The choice of endless colours and nuances in pattern make choosing a dining table, worktop or splashback a project - rather than a task. You can opt for classic Carrara marble with its glossy white backdrop and subtle

grey streaks. If you want to go bolder, then Calacatta Viola marble has maximum impact with its purple tinge and large, distinctive veins. In terms of colour everything from white to charcoal, creams and browns as well as contemporary green and blue marbles will be on trend for 2025. The organic texture of marble is enough to transform any dining room into a designer space. Renowned for its luxurious appeal and natural beauty, marble works equally well within minimal and grand, maximal interiors. A Calacatta Viola marble-effect dining table is the perfect accompaniment for period features within your room - such as wall panelling, coving or an ornate ceiling rose. Or you can create just as much impact by placing a black marbleeffect slab table within a minimal space - think soft minimalism with a boost of luxe. Whether you choose to underplay your statement marble table in a simple setting - or make it the hero - marble is guaranteed to elevate your interior. What’s more, it’s the perfect choice if you want your home to feel like a designer property - but without the high price tag.” furniturechoice.co.uk

With their distinctive original designs, the three fireplaces now offer a total freedom of installation and become “ready-to-install” models. Smokeless, with no need for an external flue outlet on the roof (if situation allows), this is the true advantage of Focus’ new bioethanol range: a fireplace that you can install anywhere you want! The Gyrofocus, Domofocus and Ergofocus can now take place in spaces where they were previously impossible to integrate: any floor of a house, any room of an apartment, under a mezzanine or in public places. partnership with Ignisial Paris, French specialist in high-end bioethanol burners. The aesthetics of the flames, the ceramic logs and the imitation embers create a convincing similarity with an authentic wood fire. At the touch of a button, the bioethanol hearths light up instantly and maintain a comforting, generous fire, true to their history.

Iconic and revolutionary design

Created in 1968, the Gyrofocus has become an international design icon, taught in architecture schools, and exhibited at the Guggenheim Museum in New York. In 1983 was born the Ergofocus with its pure lines and compact size that make it very easy to integrate in any space and made it the most popular fireplace in Focus’ range. The Domofocus was launched in 2015 and is the culmination of a double design quest: for a generous and welcoming organic shape, yet a more compact volume. Transforming Chaos into Harmony: A Fresh Take on an Entrance Hall

T

he entrance hall is the heart of first impressions. In our latest project, we took on the challenge of reimagining an entrance space that was, frankly, in disarray—a space that felt more like a storage closet than the welcoming embrace it should be. The hall was cluttered with boxes, shoes, and coats, and featured a small desk repurposed as an office space by the previous owner. Our mission? To turn this chaotic entryway into a harmonious, functional, and inspiring space. The new design pivots on creating a serene and inviting atmosphere through thoughtful use of colours and textures. We selected a soothing palette of greens and corals, reminiscent of nature and vitality, to brighten the space. One wall will feature a forest-inspired mural wallpaper with subtle textures that evoke tranquillity and depth. This feature wall will be balanced by coral accents that add warmth and energy to the room, creating a space that feels both elegant and vibrant. Given that the entrance connects to the kitchen, we envisioned a multifunctional area that balances aesthetics

11 2 D E C E M B E R 2 0 2 4

with practicality. A small table with four chairs will replace the clutter, offering a practical spot for kids to enjoy breakfast or work on their homework. This addition will not only streamline the flow between the entrance and kitchen but also bring a sense of purpose and unity to the space. To maintain a clutter-free environment, we have incorporated discreet storage solutions, such as built-in cabinets with a hidden shoe rack, a thoughtfully designed breakfast station, and a streamlined coat cupboard. Strategic lighting will further enhance the ambiance, ensuring the hall feels airy and welcoming even on the cloudiest London days. This transformation is more than a redesign—it’s about creating harmony. By balancing functionality without compromising style, this once-overlooked entrance hall will become a warm, purposeful, and beautifully cohesive space that sets the tone for the entire home. Let us help you turn your spaces into sanctuaries, one thoughtful design at a time. schneiderdesigners.co.uk
