Following a sell out West End run, comic and musician Bill Bailey brings his live show DANDELION MIND to the BIC on 29 Nov as part of his national tour. Featuring Bill’s trademark musical interludes, observations and stories of the road, DANDELION MIND will be based loosely on the theme of doubt (or will it?), as we follow Bill from his real-life saga of being trapped by the ash cloud to his barely contained rants about celebrity, TV, creationism and Michael Winner. After an absence of more than 7 years to the UK stage the BIC are thrilled to welcome Duran Duran on 1 Dec who throughout their outstanding career have sold more than 80 million records, with 30 chart toppers in the UK, 18 American hit singles and a global presence that guarantees them huge concert audiences on five continents. e heat stays on during December when e Saturdays arrive with their first ever arena tour on 2 Dec, Canadian rock superstar Bryan Adams with his 20th Anniversary tour on 5 Dec and with over 13 million units sold worldwide, Louis Clark’s Hooked On Classics is back with a new live production . e legendary Louis Clark, former arranger for Electric Light Orchestra, will be conducting the 60 piece English Pops Orchestra featuring many

Log boat on display in the Poole Museum

The hisTory of Poole IMAGES FROM THE POOLE MUSEUM SERVICE

P

oole has a rich and fascinating history stretching back to prehistory. e 2,300 year old Poole Log boat is evidence of a maritime tradition that continued with medieval boats and Victorian yachts. It continues today with Sunseeker building some of the world’s most luxurious yachts here in Poole Harbour. THE IRON AGE e Iron Age has provided us with the first evidence of settlement around Poole Harbour. Pottery from this era was uncovered at Hamworthy in the 1920s. In 1964 the Log boat was accidentally uncovered during dredging work in Poole Harbour, this was crafted by Iron Age boatbuilders. e log boat dates back to 295 B.C and it is thought it could have carried up to 18 people. e log boat would not have travelled beyond Poole harbour but could have helped transport goods and workers to Green Island (in Poole Harbour) where bracelet and jewellery production was taking place. e log boat is now on display in Poole Museum and is a remarkable object as prehistoric boats are very rare finds. ROMAN TIMES e future Roman Emperor Vespasian used Poole Harbour as an invasion port for his Second Legion Augusta. A road was constructed from Hamworthy to Bradbury Rings and at the Lake Farm site there was a legionary fort of around 40 acres. is means that the shore base at Hamworthy must have received a huge quantity of military supplies. 1248 At this time the Longespee Charter was granted by the crusader knight William Longespee. Poole gained important

freedoms that formed the foundations of the prosperity of the town and port in the Middle Ages. One of the oldest buildings in Poole, the Town Cellars, dates from c.1300 and now houses Poole History Centre, part of Poole Museum. In 1405 fighting raged around the building when the town was attacked by Spanish raiders in retaliation for attacks by Harry Paye, the famous Poole Pirate. 1364 In 1364 the Winchelsea Certificate was granted by the Mayor and Barons of the Cinque Port of Winchelsea, this confirmined Poole’s admiralty, jurisdiction and boundaries. e ceremony of Beating of the Water Bounds comes from this charter. 1568 By the Charter of Queen Elizabeth I in 1568, Poole was created ‘one entire County Corporate in deed and name distinct and altogether separate from the County of Dorset’ and named ‘the County of the Town of Poole’. GEORGIAN POOLE Poole has some of the finest Georgian buildings in Dorset. Most of these were built on the profits of a transatlantic trade with Newfoundland which had huge stocks of cod off its shores. Poole merchants made vast profits from exporting salt cod to Spain, Portugal and Italy. is was also a period when smugglers were active in the area. A smuggling gang- the Hawkhurst Gang- raided Poole Custom House in 1747, an event that led to murder and execution!

NAPOLEONIC WAR e defeat of Napoleon at Waterloo and peace with France and the United States of America signalled the beginning of the end of Poole’s lucrative Newfoundland trade. Poole Harbour continued to import flour, meat, timber and skins. China clay mining then came to the Harbour for the Staffordshire potteries. THE GUESTS OF CANFORD MANOR Cornelia Churchill married Sir Ivor Guest at the age of 21 in 1868. e Guest family made their fortune by owning the largest ironworks in the world at that time. Ivor Guest became the 1st Lord Wimborne and after their marriage Lord and Lady Wimborne took up residence at Canford Manor. Lord and Lady Wimborne were philanthropists and gifted land and buildings to Poole. ese included the Cornelia Hospitalwhich opened 1907 and they also gifted 40 acres to the people of Poole; this became Poole Park and was officially opened by the Prince of Wales in 1890.

POOLE POTTERY Poole Pottery is known and collected worldwide. Its origin goes back to the Carter family who first came to Poole in the 1870s. Carter and Co.’s main business was architectural products, such as floor and wall tiles, but around 1900 Owen Carter began experimenting with making bowls and vases. During the First World War a decorative pottery section was formed. One of its products was an unglazed ware probably inspired by Romano-British pottery held in local museums. After the First World War, Cyril Carter concentrated on pottery production for Carter and Co. He was joined by Harold and Phoebe Stabler and John and Gertrude (Truda) Adams. ey formed Carter, Stabler and Adams in 1921 as a subsidiary of Carter & Co. Truda Adams (later Truda Carter) was the resident designer, soon supported by a group of skilled ‘paintresses’. In the 1920s and 1930s they developed a distinct look based on decorative hand-painting influenced by Art Deco. SECOND WORLD WAR Poole played a full part in the Second World War. It served as a major flying boat base and its boatyards built many landing craft and other vessels. Operation Overlord saw an armada leave Poole for the D-Day landings. 1975 Poole is probably unique in having two charters granted by both Queen Elizabeth. e Charter of Queen Elizabeth II confers Borough status and retention of its historic titles and privileges on the District of Poole created on 1st April 1974. 1ST APRIL 1997 Borough of Poole became a unitary authority. 1998 Poole celebrated its 750th birthday, marking the date when the Longspee charter was granted. TWIN SAILS e first bridge lasted until 1885 when concerns were raised about its safety. It was replaced by an iron girder swing bridge. e bridge had a gear system which was operated by hand. Both sides of the bridge were wound open separately until they were at right angles with the road. e third and present bridge was officially opened on Wednesday 9th March 1927. e town enjoyed a carnival atmosphere to celebrate 22

the first toll free bridge. Schools were closed for the day and shops closed early. e local newspaper reported that over a thousand people gathered to witness the ‘Excel’ sail through the bridge “amid deafening cheers, hooting of sirens and firing rockets.” e Twin Sails Bridge will open to the public in early 2012. e bridge, one of the greatest engineering projects in post-war Poole, is a world class design which reflects Poole’s maritime and industrial heritage. POOLE MUSEUM e rich history of the ancient port town of Poole is revealed in four floors of galleries housed in a 19th century quayside warehouse. e Museum was reopened in 2007 following a major redevelopment. Displays range from archaeology to art, from pirates to potteries. Highlights include the Iron Age Poole logboat, the finest collection of Poole Pottery on public display, and a replica hide where you can view the birds of Poole Harbour. With its stunning new entrance and atrium, Poole Museum’s new public facilities include a visitor lounge and terrace with magnificent views over Poole Harbour and the Old Town. Currently running is a temporary exhibition ‘e way we worked’. An exhibition focused on working in Poole in the 1950s and what you could buy with your earnings. Wages were low but so were many prices. Find out what life was like when you might earn only £5 a week but a loaf of bread cost less than 2p.

ARTIFICIAL REEF IMPROVEMENTS ALL AT SEA

Surfers have complained that the right-handed waves produced by the reef are ugly ‘slabs’ making them steep and short-lived and not the promised ‘peelers’ which provide a purer and longer, sustained ride. Remedial work by the reef ’s manufacturers, the global coastal and marine consulting firm ASR, is now looking unlikely due to the forthcoming seasonal poor weather and associated sea conditions.

T

he surfing world’s hopes have been ‘wiped out’ by the news of planned improvements to Europe’s first artificial surf reef off Dorset are unlikely to be completed by the end of the year. Born of an idea from as far back as 1999, work on the Northern Hemisphere’s only artificial reef didn’t start until 2008 after the government go-ahead was given in 2007.

e reef opened 12 months late and £1.3 million over budget in the winter of 2009 and locals voiced concerns that the reef had failed to deliver on its promises.

e £3.2m underwater reef at Boscombe is often exposed

during low tides and has been closed since March. It has been responsible for taking the fins off surfers’ boards and the decision to officially close the reef came after two sandbags were damaged by a boat. Seagulls can be spotted taking refuge of the reef ’s sandbags at low water and locals hope that the ‘affectionately’ named beached whale does not turn out to be a white elephant. It looks like the tide may have turned for this unique piece of marine engineering but for the moment it appears to be going out ■

Despite an expectation of the reef attracting more surfers to the area, increased tourism and an associated influx of capital to a previously run-down area, some hoteliers have been left high and dry.

In September 2010, within three weeks of permission being denied, more than a foot of bark appeared to have been stripped from the trees’ trunk. e pair denied the allegations, claiming that the

site was unsecured and that vandals, aggrieved creditors or locals wanting a better sea view had stripped away the bark. However, the supposed ‘miscreants’ had been particularly precise in their act of arboreal vandalism, having precisely cut 14-18 inches of bark from each tree and then cleared up after themselves. “Who leaves the pine-tree, leaves his friend, Unnerves his strength, invites his end.” Ralph Waldo Emerson ■

WIND BLOWS IN BEST WINDFEST IN 13 YEARS

W

indfest blew all other action sports festivals out of the water at this years event, as strong winds of over 30 knots helped competitors execute the extremist of stunts. e perfect combination of sunshine and wind pulled in the punters, who came in their thousands to compete or watch the action in the water, on the sand and in the air above Sandbanks Beach, Poole. Sponsored by Franklin & Marshall, the British Kitesurfing Association (BKSA) National Course Racing Championships and Freestyle Invitational especially benefitted from these ideal weather conditions. Steph Bridge proved why she

is the four times World Champion by winning the BKSA Course Racing for the second year in a row. Ned Taylor brought home the trophy for the BKSA Men’s Freestyle Invitational Championships with Sukie Robertson victorious in the Women’s Freestyle Invitational Championships. Hosted by Maverick Slacklines, the very first UK Slacklining Championships revealed the huge amount of talent that is already in the UK for this burgeoning urban sport. After a breathtakingly

close final, full of flips and highly technical combos, Jacob Hirsch-Holland was crowned king of the UK slackliners. Back on the water, both amateur and professional windsurfers battled hard for the UK Windsurfing Association National Freestyle Tour. With the standard at an all-time high, it proved very hard work for the judges, and in a couple of categories there was only a mere fraction of a point separating the winner. e gruelling British Stand-Up Paddleboarding (BSUPA) race around Brownsea Island, the BaySUP/BSUPA 'Battle of

the Paddle’, 14ft plus Class Time and the BaySUP/BSUPA Men on Men Sprints proved a staggering feat of stamina and strength for Paul Simmons, who was first across the finishing line in all four races. For the second year running, the Redbull Matadors’ aerial antics were a huge crowd thriller. eir daredevil acrobatics could be clearly seen against the backdrop of the big, blue sky as the two planes twisted and turned, trailing blue and white smoke behind. Old favourite, the Animal Bike Tour, never failed to attract the crowds, as riders Blake Samson and the former World Champion, Martyn Ashton tore up the ramps with

BILL WYMAN’S RHYTHM KINGS

R

ock and roll icon, author, restaurateur and photographer legendary former Rolling Stones bassist Bill Wyman brings his Rhythm Kings to Lighthouse, Poole’s Centre for the Arts on November 11th. Bill Wyman has seen it all and continues to live life to the full. For over thirty years he was part of the best rock n roll band in the world. His latest musical rebirth, as the driving force behind the fabulous Rhythm Kings, sees him return to his musical roots. is set of virtuoso musicians superbly bring back to life the kind of classic rhythm and blues that first inspired Wyman to pick up the guitar as a teenager. A show imbued with absolute quality. "e whole idea behind the band was to play music that we love and I think you can hear and feel that on our records. Playing live, doing gigs, means everybody in the band does it for the same reasons as I do; to have a good time and send the crowd home with smiles on their faces" says Wyman. Having spent much of 2010 touring Europe, Bill Wyman’s Rhythm Kings return to tour the UK and joining Bill are legendary musicians: Albert Lee, who’s lightning-fast speed has earned him a reputation as the guitarist's guitarist, also known as Mr Telecaster. Georgie Fame, rhythm and

blues, jazz singer and keyboard player, who released hit records in the 60’s such as: 'I Love My Dog', 'e Ballad of Bonnie','Clyde', 'Yeh Yeh', 'Get Away' Frank Mead, saxophonist, has played alongside Blues legends BB King, Albert Collins, Jimmy Rogers and Otis Rush. He’s appeared on records with the likes of Paul McCartney, Squeeze and Manfred Mann. Geraint Watkins, the legendary Rock and Roll, Boogie and Blues pianist who has given his skills to some of the biggest names in music during his 30 year plus career on both piano and accordion. From Van Morrison, Carl Perkins to Sir Paul McCartney. He’s Bob Dylan’s favourite pianist. Terry Taylor on guitar, ex Tuckey Buzzard and e Arrows, Terry has also performed with the legendary Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy and Junior Wells, amongst others. Graham Broad, on drums, has worked with artists including Roger Waters, Tina Turner and e Beach Boys. Nick Payn on sax, has performed with Lonnie Donegan, and e Gary Moore band, amongst many others. Beverley Skeete, who has been the featured Vocalist with Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings since the band's formation in 1997 has also recorded with acts ranging from Robbie Williams

to Elton John. “Former Rolling Stone teams up with a stellar cast of players. POOLE SAILOR JOINS EXCLUSIVE SURVIVORS’ CLUB AFTER T-BONE MISTAKE

P

oole Olympic star Annie Lush has become the latest ‘proud’ member of an exclusive group of mariners rewarded for accidents at sea. Acceptance into the South West Shingles Yacht Club is by invitation only and as its founder and Club Commodore, Poole’s David Latchford explained, it is for those who have made ‘mistakes’ at sea and survived to tell the tale. Annie’s membership came as the result of having T-boned a boat while sailing in Australia but her fellow crew members, sailing sisters Kate and Lucy Macgregor, have yet to ‘hit the mark’ to qualify. Annie is no stranger to accidents. In the build up to the Rolex Miami Olympic Classes Regatta earlier this year, she fell 10ft from her Elliot 6-metre boat while it was docked in the boat park. e Olympic hopeful

was rushed to hospital but fortunately her injuries were no more serious than concussion, a broken nose, dislocated fingers and a gash to her head requiring 25 stitches. Annie, along with Kate and Lucy, will be flying the flag for Team GB in the 2012 Olympics, competing in the Match Racing Class on the notoriously difficult waters off Weymouth. e exclusivity derived from being a member of the Survivors’ Club comes at a price and there is a certain amount of kudos associated with membership. Although the Macgregor sisters might enjoy the potential of the exclusive status “We don’t want them joining during the Olympics” explained David. David formed the Club almost 30 years ago. On 13th June 1984, while sailing his 30-foot Moody yacht from Yarmouth on

the Isle of Wight back to Poole, rather than ‘rounding’ the South West Shingles buoy he struck it while traveling at 10 knots. Coincidentally, about 100 miles away, Commander Colin Hamilton, captain of HMS Jupiter, was not enjoying plain sailing either and his 2,500-ton Leander class frigate struck London Bridge. Fortunately it did not fall down. e Club now boasts a membership of 160 famous and infamous mariners from all four corners of the Globe. e list includes various Tony Bullimore, whose was rescued in 1996 during the Vendee Globe single-handed race. Tony survived in the upturned vessel in the Southern Ocean inside an air pocket. High-ranking Royal Navy personnel are also listed, including Commander Richard Farrington, captain of HMS Nottingham whose destroyer struck Wolf Rock, off Australia’s

east coast in 2007. Additionally Commander Andy Coles, skipper of the Royal Navy’s Hunter/Killer submarine HMS Astute is also listed. e £1 billion nuclear submarine hit the World’s front pages when the ‘run ashore’ off the Isle of Skye last year didn’t quite go as planned.

David’s philosophical slant on forming the club is ‘It’s for people with like minds and attitudes. You made a mistake, it’s not the end of the world.” As the saying goes “worse things happen at sea!” ■

While we are all thinking about our autumn wardrobes and digging out our winter jumpers in an attempt to stay warm, designers were showcasing next year’s spring/summer collections during this month’s London Fashion Week. So what we will be wearing next Spring & Summer? Here are just a selection of those names that hit the catwalk! Over 1500 guests attended the Burberry Prorsum Spring Summer 2012 Womenswear show in London’s Hyde Park. Pippa Middleton, Kanye West, Samantha Cameron, Sienna Miller, Paul Weller were among the wellgroomed crowd of celebrities packing London Fashion Week’s glossiest event to catch a glimpse of Burberry’s spring/summer 2012 collection. Burberry Prorsum’s design chief Christopher Bailey wowed the starstudded crowd with dozens of variations on the luxury brand’s signature trench coat.Bailey, who has been at the helm of the historic British brand’s designs for a decade, has been credited with revitalising it and lifting its revenues. For the spring and summer 2012 season, he showed o a commercially-savvy collection that ensured the clothes suited all tastes. Neutrals were ditched for rich autumnal hues which dominated alongside colourful abstract prints and raďŹƒa was prominently used on tops, coats, belts and bags.Bailey said he wanted to celebrate traditional craftsmanship that is being forgotten and to juxtapose that with the digital technology that the brand is embracing. As for its digital innovations, the fashion house showed its Twitter fans each model’s look before they hit the catwalk. It also opted to stream the event in HD from both its own website and Facebook page. Clarity and optimism radiate from the SS12 Aquascutum collection, exploring the contrasting forms created by structure and drape, bringing a fresh sense of femininity and a glamorous sensuality to Aquascutum’s signature outer wear and tailoring. Aquascutum’s rich British heritage continues through the use of innovative technical fabrics, featuring an exclusively commissioned, laminated,British tweed and a playful exploration of coating silk georgette with a waterproof gloss ďŹ nish. Outerwear is made graphic with strips of bonded canvas and plastic trim. Luxurious and wearable accessories echo the palette and texture of the collection. Chic shoes combine attitude with supreme comfort and we introduce a

Aquascutum was founded in 1851 by high quality tailor John Emary with the mission to provide stylish protection from the unpredictable British weather. The name Aquascutum originates from the two Latin words ‘aqua’ (water) and ‘scutum’ (shield). Aquascutum has been part of London city life for nearly 160 years. As always the front row of Jasper’s catwalk show was packed with members of the fashion press and his family and friends who turned out in force for a look at what Jasper has in store for next season. Jasper’s Spring/Summer 2012 collection is lithe, sporty and feminine. Pitched from the shoulder, unrestricted yet precise. Innovation in construction and detail with wraps, straps, ties and the cleanest approach to cut. In summer wool, cotton piquĂŠ, polished cotton, crepes and silk the palette resides in black, white, silvered-grey and saturated geranium tones. Simple and controlled. Precision resin is layered in graphic shapes for boxy clutches, shoulder bags and components in clear, milk, and translucent black and red tones. Pattern is formed in weightless silk tulle and georgette. Pared down and unaected in a monastic black silk crepe tux. The back is bared in oor length dresses - singular in their bold purity. A distinctive air of ease highlights the disciplined lack of grandeur. The agship store at 36 Sackville Street occupies one of London’s ďŹ nest postcodes in the heart of Mayfair. It is just a stone’s throw from Fortnum and Mason, the Royal Academy of Arts and Saville Row. Jasper Conran blends contemporary with tradition, showcasing his bespoke womenswear, made-to-measure menswear, bridal, living and dining collections here. Next Summer’s spirits are high and heady with a relaxed, carefree collection that embraces Paul Smith’s modern, masculine aesthetic for women. Light-as-a-feather fabrics in deconstructed shapes are soft and airy giving layered pieces a cool simplicity. Mannish, tailored pieces in smooth fabrics are sleek and ďŹ tted; an owhite double breasted suit is elegant and sophisticated worn open at the neck. Silk handkerchief checks are attering in oversize proportions; shirts are tucked into slim trousers or drawstring pants worn low on the waist. Laced-trimmed georgette dresses add a touch of femininity, casually

wrapping around the waist to create a sensual silhouette. Pretty, soft-washed powder tones of blush, lavender and mauve sit next to a more masculine range of chambray blues and steely greys whilst vibrant shots of bright buttercup, jade and bordeaux bring optimistic block colour highlights to the palette. Hazy orals add depth, their petals inked with dark tones. For Spring/Summer 2012, Jaeger London is inspired by the glamour of the late 60s /early 70s jet set and their hideaways in far-ung, exotic destinations. This season sees the Jaeger London woman landing on the isle of Mustique, the exclusive playground of British rock stars and royalty. Imagine the back of a villa open onto the ocean, the billowing curtains blowing gently in the sea breeze. Her wardrobe epitomises the laid-back elegance of the island, blended with British colonial references, rich colours and textures and inspired by Jaeger’s iconic early 1970s advertising campaigns shot against backdrops of famous locations. Since 2005, Jaeger has focused on UK brand expansion, including its return to Harrods and Selfridges (the brand became the ďŹ rst retailer to operate independently within Selfridges in the 1930s). Jaeger has 45 premium UK freestanding stores, including the Jaeger London branded stores in prime London locations, and signiďŹ cant shop-in-shop presence in Harrods, Selfridges, Harvey Nichols, Fenwick, House of Fraser and John Lewis. The trend for 70s fashion continued at House of Holland where their spring/summer 2012 collection had a pastel punk edge. Inspirations were Skins and Punks, SKA revival and South Beach & Miami palette. Highlights included Oversized mobre leopard, lurex string knits, laser-cut ďŹ shnet leather, hand painted python belts and cus and Reworked House of Holland signature tartan. House of Holland’s collection is nothing shy of colour with mint, lilac, apricot and French Navy being featured - the clothes were fun and, as always, Henry isn’t taking fashion too seriously. Drawing inspiration from notions as diverse as mythical warriors, ďŹ shing on the Amazon, his ongoing fascination with the black lit paintings of Pierre Soulages, and the languid tones of Hank Williams. The Spring/Summer 2012 collection continues

John Rocha’s exploration of textures and structures and the stories they can tell. Blurring the senses between fragile and bold, wild and gentle, there is a certain duality in the collection, John creates an atmosphere of tough romanticism, his women appearing at once ďŹ erce and serene. John’s palette is, as ever, simply beautiful - essentially monochrome - black in all its depths, honey and soft gold, rose and broken white. Tints and hues are realised in uid silk georgette, crepes and linen, crisp in silk organza, cottons, and extraordinary surfaces. The modern silhouette is sculpted in structured volume, surfaces densely worked in patchwork crochets, leathers and hand tucked raďŹƒa, or slender draping the body in softly pleated asymmetry, easy tailoring and elongated skirts and trousers John’s Spring Summer 2012 collection is informed by his enduring love of structure, texture and form, and his particular view of strength and tenderness. Cool Earth has a plan to save the Rainforest. If we don’t save the Rainforest- Forget it! First we saved the Rainforest. Will they ever know we saved the planet? Most of you know that I’ve always used my fashion shows as a platform for my belief in the importance of social justice and the urgent need to ďŹ ght climate change. I introduce the Rainforest charity, Cool Earth, and a campaign that is very close to my heart - a plan to save the most vulnerable Rainforest areas by 2020. We must begin today - tomorrow is too late. Governments have been talking about saving the Rainforest for 40 years. Now, only half of it is left. Since launching in 2007, Cool Earth has worked with indigenous Rainforest people to protect 2.5 million acres in the Western Amazon and block the advance of illegal logging- the ďŹ rst stage in most Rainforest destruction. We plan to extend this eective community-lead model along the most critical arcs of deforestation in the Amazon, the Congo Basin and Borneo- the groundwork has already been laid. We need your help to continue. I am personally supporting Cool Earth and investing in our future. This show marked the start of our fundraising campaign for Cool Earth- we will have the oďŹƒcial launch in November. I’m inviting

my friends, celebrities and everyone interested in saving our beautiful world to join me. Think about getting involved. Find out more about playing your part at www.coolearth.org. Remember: No Rainforest, No Planet. We have less than 10 years to keep what is left! Inspired by tribal body paint and the work of contemporary artist Kim Joon, David Koma’s Spring/Summer 2012 collection focuses on the body as a canvas. Kim Joon decorates intertwining bodies with uid painting; David reinterprets this concept by using devore to act as a delicate second skin that conceals yet reveals the female form. Imitating the masterful artistry of Polynesian tribal tattoos, combinations of devore prints from small and intricate to large, abstract blocks reference the ‘Pe’a’, the traditional male tattoo covering the body from the waist to the knees. The bold ‘Pe’a’ symbolizes men respected for courage; David similarly designs for a strong and powerful female muse. The African zulu skirt and Dinka men’s corset are interpreted as handcrafted leather belts with fringing and pleats, that enclose a tailored and body conscious silhouette in light wools and silks. Combining the traditional Scottish kilt with tribal layering creates feminine, high waisted skirts with pleated panel eects. This season sees a continuation of David Koma’s third collaboration with Alain Quilici who has designed exclusive footwear for the collection. The Maria Grachvogel Spring/Summer 2012 collection is a feast of colour, print and texture. The palette is vibrant and fresh with bold shots of raspberry, apple and pristine white that sit alongside languid tones of blossom, clay and ash. Signature Maria Grachvogel pieces such as the beautifully cut magic trousers are given an innovative twist this season with the introduction of a skinny leg pant with a cool ankle drape and a wrap palazzo with a wide, uid leg. Maria’s iconic catsuit appears in fresh white crepe, blossom and snake print wool. This season sees the launch of Atalanta Weller for Maria Grachvogel; an exclusive footwear line and design collaboration featuring a statement, cut-away shoe boot in snakeskin, ash and blossom suede, and a sculpted spiked court. Maria Grachvogel also celebrates the opening of her new London agship store at 18 Culford Gardens, SW3. The store has been designed by Russell Sage, the designer behind the interiors at the Savoy Grill, the restaurant at Claridges, the Zetter Townhouse and Stapleford Park.

It isn’t so dierent from the women’s shows - there’s the clothes, the models, the celebrities - but it is more relaxed. London Fashion Week was brought to a stylish close as the men took to the catwalk for spring/summer 2012. The main attractions covered Mexican inuences, dapper suits, and exotic and paisley prints. This season, the Topman boy would not look out of place leaving a smoking Parisian jazz club during the early hours of the early 1950s. Time travel decadence aside, there were silk paisley shirts, tweed suits, lurex ďŹ sherman jumpers and fake fur. It went down a treat. Topman delivered a ďŹ ne show and the very heart of menswear day. SPG, that’s Sir Philip Green, not Sarah Jessica Parker - the billionaire was THE VIP at the Topman show. Christopher Shannon showed us that tassels could bring a whole new lease of life to the humble shirt, while James Small drew quite s celebrity crowd - including Kate Moss and Jamie Hince - to see his oral shirts and shorts and Oliver Spencer made coral the colour of the season. “Menswear fashion in London is alive and kicking and I’m always proud to wear British designers,â€? said actor Luke Evans, also seen at Pringle of Scotland earlier in the week, too. “Very interesting to see Alistair Carr’s new vision. His designs are strong and fresh. This has been my ďŹ rst London Fashion Week and it was great to have the opportunity to see two very British designers and their work,â€? he told us. Fashion Week is one of the highest proďŹ le fashion events in the world and one of the ‘big four’ international catwalk inuencers. The event is organised by the British Fashion Council (BFC) and funded by a number of sponsors (including Canon Europe current headline sponsor for seven consecutive seasons). London Fashion Week puts London and British Fashion ďŹ rmly on the global stage, generating orders in the region of ÂŁ100m; the event itself contributes ÂŁ20 million to the London economy in terms of direct spend and attracts visitors from over 25 countries including US, France, Italy, Russia, Middle East, China and UAE. The healthcare revolution is here!

or too long now the government has handed the running of the NHS to various parties, all with diering approaches and visions of steering our beloved NHS into a position of stability and greatness once again. In years gone by people of the UK were in an enviable position, having access to one of the best healthcare systems in the world and one that was free. Unfortunately, with time, the NHS has found itself coming under increasing pressures, both resourced based and ďŹ nancially, the results of which have lead to today’s experiences being both positive and negative. The question is, where do we go from here? Maybe the government will ďŹ nd a solution! In the meantime you could join the healthcare revolution and put your health in your hands! The current UK healthcare system is complicated and disjointed, making it work in a way that is right for you, is often fraught with anxiety and stress. Simply making an appointment to see your own GP, through to getting referrals and waiting for results, can be a nightmare. More often than not the ten minutes we have with our GP does little to inspire us with conďŹ dence but more worryingly can result in misdiagnosis which is something that is being reected more and more in evidence, reports and statistics. This is no reection on the skills of the GPs working in the NHS, in fact quite the contrary, our NHS GPs are highly skilled individuals that do the most remarkable job with the tools available to them. It is the system that is making their job so much more diďŹƒcult. If we could have unlimited time with their own GP, make same day appointments, could speak to him/ her on the telephone anytime, including evening and weekends and have a team of individuals working on our behalf to organise every aspect of our health requirements, our primary healthcare would be truly taken care of. With this level of service available to us, we would have ‘Our health in our hands’, and could begin to use the system to our advantage by taking ‘preventative’ steps, using our GP and his/her team to improve and maintain our health, instead of being there to ďŹ x us when something goes wrong. The trouble is this is a pipe dream, a fantasy that is unachievable by the NHS! However, it is happening and it is available here in the capital and for as little as ÂŁ30/month. Harley Street is world famous, establishing its reputation back in the 18th century for exciting, innovations and pioneering developments in medicine, becoming a centre of excellence for cutting edge medicine and that trend still continues today. Harley Street may be considered by many as somewhere only for the rich and famous with Doctors and Consultants charging enormous fees for every consultation, but despite this being the norm, it certainly is not the exception. The exception can be found at Galen Health, designed to give both ďŹ ve star luxury and an exceptional medical service without the excessive

price tag. Galen Health was founded by an exceptionally gifted GP who has worked with inspiring, world leading mentors from across the spectrum of UK healthcare. Dr Lidder leds a team of highly skilled GPs and nurses all at the pinnacle of their professions, and is supported by a team of ‘Healthcare Concierge Assistants’ who ensure that every aspect of care, and every treatment pathway that a Galen Health member receives is completely seamless, from simply organising appointments and referrals, chasing results and organising follow-up care, to organising Nutritionists, Osteopaths, Physiotherapists, Personal Trainers, Dentists, Orthodontists, Opticians and many more at excellent rates, most of which can be found on site at Galen Health along with MRI, CT, Ultra Sound, Cone Beam, Thermal Imaging and X ray. When this is combined with a dedicated pathology laboratory providing immediate results, Dr Lidder ďŹ nds himself at the helm of arguable one of the best and most advanced diagnostic centres in the UK, and as we all know, early diagnosis saves lives, emotions and ďŹ nance. As a Galen Health member, not only do you get outstanding day-to-day care, but you also have access to world class diagnostics getting to the route of any complications fast. There is no age or medical discrimination and you do not have to leave your NHS practice. If you already have private medical insurance you can nominate your Galen Health GP as ‘Your GP’ which makes obtaining accurate referrals quick and simple, as well as stress free, knowing that your healthcare assistant is organising everything for you. If, however, you do not have health insurance, your healthcare assistant will act on your behalf liaising with the NHS to ensure you get your referral as quickly as possible after establishing a ‘Shared care’ relationship. ÂŁ30/month gives unlimited FREE consultations with your own private Harley Street GP in person or on the telephone from 08:00 – 22:00 (24/7 for ÂŁ50/month members) plus your own personal ‘Healthcare Assistant’ and access to the full range of Galen Health services at a discounted rate.

Simply making an appointment to see your own GP, through to getting referrals and waiting for results, can be a nightmare.

FLYING TRAINING HELI AIR – HELICOPTER

H

eli Air, with its bases at Wellesbourne Aerodrome, Warwickshire, Wycombe Air Park and Denham Aerodrome, Buckinghamshire and within the Silverstone Race Circuit, Northamptonshire is a highly experienced helicopter flying training organisation offering training courses to suit individuals from all varieties of backgrounds. For any prospective pilot, a trial lesson followed by an introductory day spent flying the Robinson R22 or R44 is the most cost effective way to determine whether flying is something they wish to pursue, and for those who decide to take on the challenge of completing their Private Pilot Licence (PPL), any hours incurred during this initial period will automatically count towards the minimum requirement for their licence. Once qualified, the Private Pilot Licence allows individuals to fly their friends and family almost anywhere in the UK and across Europe. The PPL training course consists of a minimum of 45 hours flying time and the R22 helicopter is normally employed 52

for this purpose. The training will initially familiarise the student with the basics of flying, including flying straight and level, climbing and descending, turns, and the art of hovering. Further exercises dealing with potential emergencies prepare the student for his or her first solo flight where he or she will take off from the aerodrome, complete one circuit before landing safely and hover taxiing back to the instructor. The course culminates in a test whereby the student demonstrates his or her skills to an examiner and thereafter the pilot may self-fly hire helicopters

of the same type and share the experience with their family and friends. Having qualified as a Private Pilot, many individuals wish to upgrade their skills by learning to fly other helicopters. The obvious choice for most is to learn to fly the R44 which is a 4 seater version of the R22. With controls virtually identical to the R22, this can be achieved in as little as 5 hours and a test. Heli Air has expanded its training division by offering an advanced flying course to students who have their licence, yet wish to improve their flying and navigation skills. Flying

through controlled airspace, Military Air Traffic Zones, confined areas and advanced auto rotations all feature heavily during this modular course designed to turn the PPL novice into a more rounded and professional pilot. In addition, Heli Air also trains for night flying, instrument awareness and mountain flying, all designed to make the individual a better pilot. For those who decide to make a career of helicopter flying, Heli Air provides the right environment to achieve this goal, the Commercial Pilot Licence. Heli Air offers some outstanding packages for individuals to accumulate their flying hours for the CPL course at competitive rates. The Commercial course as its name implies is to turn the individual into a pilot capable of flying and navigating accurately, improving the efficiency of the

flight as well as maintaining costs. Having passed the Flight Test, this may allow a pilot to work for a helicopter charter company. Once qualified as a commercial pilot, there are two

further options to individuals, both of which are offered at Heli Air. Firstly a pilot may embark on the Flying Instructors course and having qualified, this will enable the pilot to teach students to fly and gain their Private Pilot Licence.

CHRISTMAS 2011

W

hen it comes to identifying that ‘must have’ product that will top Christmas lists everywhere, the iPad 2 easily earns the top spot. If you were thinking there might be a worthy competitor from an alternative electronic manufacturer then think again. Lets be honest, no-one wants to see their child cry on Christmas morning. I am of course bias, with a vested interest in Apple. Still the truth is universal, and it is universally acknowledged that the Apple iPad 2 is best. It doesn’t matter whether you are buying something for a 5 year old or a 75 year old. e iPad 2 spans generations in a way no previous electronic device ever did. You will still need to decide which iPad 2 to buy. Prices range from £399 - £699. You can choose between Wi-fi only, where you must download content at home (or Wi-fi hot spot) but can play anywhere. Alternative Wi-fi/3G models allow you to download content outside using a mobile data network

NOVEMBER2011

connection (Vodafone, O2, 3, Orange). is obviously costs money. I’d be cautious of signing long term contracts that tie you in for up to 24 months and does not include using your iPad abroad without incurring extravagant ‘roaming’ charges. e good news is the iPad 2 can also be used with a Micro ‘Pay As You Go’ sim. If this all sounds confusing, that is because it is. eir are subtle differences across the iPad 2 range spanning 12 models. Make sure you go to a store that can advise you correctly. My second choice for a Christmas present is the iPod touch. e latest iPod touch is a piece of technical brilliance. Lightweight, slim, tactile and beautifully presented, the iPod touch is fabulous value for money. Priced at £169 - £329 the iPod touch really belies its price and I just can’t think of anything else that is so good for anywhere near the same price. Remember Apple originally catapulted itself to fame and fortune with the iPod and this latest

incarnation still delivers smiles every Christmas. e secret to Apple’s success has much to do with how Apple has redefined user experience, carefully removing all the irrelevant buttons and unnecessary complications that bog down the competition. I only need glance at my collection of old school remotes, an ageing Hi-fi stack held together with a mile of cable and C:/ Why_wont._u/work operating systems to remind me. 19 years ago, when I left school, I headed straight to Apple to ask if I could start my own business with them. ey were a little shocked at my presumption, being just 20 years old at the time. Nonetheless they eventually said yes and I’ve never looked back. At the very core of Apple, imbedded in its DNA, thanks to Steve Jobs, is the desire to make sure things just work. It seems strange that for so long so many of us blindly accepted poor design, inferior

production methods and damn right obtuse interfaces that drove many of us too despair. Much like ‘the ghost of Christmas past’ I remember a Christmas where Dad was still sweating from an over indulgent portion of Christmas lunch trying to fathom out the Christmas gadget he so readily purchased without realising he’d require a crash course in computer programming. Up and down the country parents found themselves speed reading tiny multilingual booklets, knowing only too well, they were well out of their depth. Consequentially glancing around the room in the vain hope they might find someone to ‘pass the parcel’. is brings me to my third choice of Christmas present. Apple TV priced at just £99 is a great Christmas present for the person who already has a Mac, iPhone, iPad & iPod touch. e Apple TV plugs straight in to your big flat screen TV and joins your existing home Wi-fi network, without the need for a manual.

Solutions__ 21/10/2011 11:18 Page 2

GadGets ose clever people at Apple have actually made a Wi-fi device that works without any unnecessary complications.

iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, Mac to the device. Only one device can be paired at a single time but given most of us on the beach don’t have a vast array of equipment with us, the Bose SoundLink serves its purpose well.

Apple TV is one of those products that you need to see to really appreciate. Go to a store where you can see it working for yourself. It’s definitely worth a few minutes of your time. In short it integrates your Mac, iPod touch, iPhone and iPad with your TV, wirelessly.

What I really like about the Bose SoundLink is the fact that Bose make good solid products, well engineered & well thought out. e Bose SoundLink seems to share some of Apple’s design DNA. e SoundLink features Bose patented sound technology that reproduces good quality sound despite its compact size. Its easy to set-up and features a built in case. When you close the case the music stops and when you open the case, which doubles as a stand, the music starts up again. Simple elegant practical design. Brilliant. e Bose SoundLink is priced £259 - £299 and worth every penny.

Even the wealthiest of James Bond villains doesn’t have as cool a set-up as I have at home. Admittedly I do not have an enormous shark filled fish tank but my Apple TV set-up runs a close second. I can run up to five Apple TVs in my home at once. I can watch five different HD movies in five different rooms at the same time. I can interrupt any of my five Apple TV’s whenever I like and simply push content from my iPad 2 to any Apple TV. I can do the same with my MacBook Pro and my wife can use her iPhone or MacBook to control whichever TV she prefers at the same time. We need never speak again, let alone fight over the remote. It’s worth taking time out to test your internet connection speed before you rush out and buy one or more Apple TVs. I would recommend using www.speedtest.net . is website provides a quick and simple test of your internet speed and so long as you are receiving a 4Mb+ download speed you should be good to go. New fibre optic based internet services from Virgin and BT are best and commonly provide 8Mb+ so its worth checking you have the latest, fastest service if you want to feel the full benefit of Apple TV. Fourth on my list of cool Christmas presents is the new Bowers & Wilkins Zeppelin

Air. A quality wireless speaker system that has Apple’s Airplay system built-in. is means you can use the Zeppelin Air on the same network as one or more Apple TV, iPod touch, Mac or iPhone. Bowers & Wilkins commitment to Airplay is encouraging as the Zeppelin has in recent years been the most popular choice, least in my own stores, and its good to see the British company Bowers & Wilkins leading their industry. When it comes to other docking speaker systems, and lets face it there are hundreds these days, the majority are poor quality systems designed and built by opportunist companies that none of us have ever heard of. Supermarkets, PC World, Curry’s and others all have their own “i” brands. As the majority of iPhone/iPod customers purchase speakers

without auditioning them, these retail giants simply push out rubbish products designed to maximise their profits. Sure they look attractively priced but they sound rubbish and often only last till Spring before they make their way to the local rubbish tip along with a mountain of other similar devices. My final suggestion for a Christmas gift is another wireless speaker system but well deserving of its place in this list. For years I’ve been waiting for a portable speaker system that I can take with me on holiday, in the garden, to the park or beach. Something well built, stylish and that sounds half decent. Its been a long wait but finally its arrived. e Bose SoundLink relies on a bluetooth connection for wireless connectivity. is means you must ‘pair’ your

So there you have it, five electronic products all of which are either made by Apple or rightfully deserve a place alongside an Apple product. ere’s something for almost everyone and every budget. If I was allowed a sixth product, please editor let me have a sixth, I highly recommend either a Wacom, Griffin or Just Mobile iPad Stylus. ese devices use a conductive rubber nib that allows you to more accurately draw and write on an iPad or iPad 2. Its not that I have abnormally fat fingers, I just find drawing with a stylus so much easier and better than with my fingers. Priced £15-£25 they make great stocking fillers. NEW SEASON

NEW LOOK

ALL EYES MIGHT HAVE BEEN ON THE FASHION CATWALKS RECENTLY, BUT THE MOST IMPORTANT TRENDS FOR DECORISTAS ARE THOSE EMERGING ON THE HIGH STREET. INTERIORS EXPERTS GIVE THEIR VIEW ON WHAT'S HOT AND WHAT'S NOT FOR AUTUMN AND PREDICT THE LOOKS THAT WILL STAY SMART INTO 2012.

utumn chills can easily be banished by the popular new trends in homeware emerging on the high street. ere's something for every taste from modern to vintage and, even if a complete makeover is beyond your budget, it's perfectly possible to echo styles in key, affordable pieces or accessories with impact. "Blame it on TV's Mad Men, but our appetite for all things Fifties and Sixties is insatiable," says Isobel McKenzie-Price, editorial director of Ideal Home magazine. "at's one of the key trends and at the other end of the scale, but equally strong, is the New Victorian decor, inspired by our yearning for the security and stability of past eras and a certain nostalgia." An eclectic country style, celebrating the beauty of one-off treasures, rustic wood and natural materials will also continue to charm, she predicts, while glamour, sparkle and shine is guaranteed to star in fashionable homes next year. "I think all these styles have real staying power - not just for the season but right through 2012," she predicts. Follow her guide to the four top trends for home decor.

MAKE IT MODERN Cool design classics from the Fifties and Sixties are enjoying a revival and are must-have pieces for contemporary rooms. "Mid-Century Modern is the perfect look for our time - simple, pared-back, elegant, and seriously stylish in an unassuming way," says McKenzie-Price. "It's a look that really is timeless, and perfectly suited to our smaller living spaces too, which is probably why it's such a winner." is time around, she says, it's interpreted in a pared-back Scandi-style, so avoid wacky graphics and kitsch colours, and simply allow statement furniture pieces to star, and team with a chalky neutrals colour scheme, subtle patterned wallpapers, and injections of moody ochre colours. Follow the trend: "You can always tell if a trend has staying power when the big retailers commit to it," says McKenzie-Price. "Mid-Century furniture is everywhere from John Lewis to House of Fraser and Marks & Spencer's new Conran range. STAG CUSHION, £165, PEDLARS 56

"Forget the bling - this season, it's all about sophistication and luxury with a contemporary twist," says McKenzie-Price. "It's the modern version of Marie Antoinette in Versailles - the world may be crumbling, so let's live for the moment!" Create this with a monochrome scheme based on geometric prints, she advises, and then add a pop of vivid colour to create instant glamour and focus. reetings to all of you, our new readers in a truly beautiful part of the world.

ZOLTAN'S

As a frequent visitor to the South Coast, I have very fond memories of Poole, Bournemouth, Christchurch, e New Forest and all the wonderful surrounding towns and villages. I have been writing monthly articles for Fish Media Group (the publishers of this magazine) since their launch in 2006. I have grown with their rapid development and am pleased to say that the response from readers in all of their groups of exceptional magazines covering the Home Counties, London and Channel Islands has been overwhelming, I hope you find them interesting down here too!

ZOLTAN'S SUNDAY AFTERNOON

If you have any questions or would like me to write a specific piece then please email me at john@johnbly.com or visit my website www.johnbly.com Some years ago I had a large oil-on-canvas portrait of a lady, obviously of noble background and, in her day – that is of the later 17century – of considerable beauty. It was a fine example of a typical set piece of time; she is holding, rather dramatically, a scantily clad child who clearly wants to play with a small dog, and all are within swathes of luxurious drapes. In a well-preserved condition and in its original carved wood and gilt frame, it was not long before it caught the eye of someone who recognises a good picture. A deal was struck and the picture was delivered and hung in a place just made for it. And so began one of those great friendships that grow from common interests, although this buyer had enjoyed a few more

60

NOVEMBER2011

interests than I, and I thought mine were varied enough. e customer and later to become friend was Laszlo Grof, a beguiling Hungarian who arrived in England in 1956 and without any English found employment first as a cook and then as a steel worker in an iron foundry, then into the mine as an explosives expert. Next came a spell as a furniture maker for Messrs Gomme in High Wycombe working on their famous ‘G Plan’ range, before turning his hand to running his own chicken farm. Settling down to become a qualified accountant Laszlo then went to Oxford to receive a degree with honours in history and has just completed his 8th tour of Transylvania lecturing on his

favourite subject, the history of cartography. In this field Laszlo is one of the leading authorities on ancient maps with a collection envied by museums and connoisseurs all over the world. In the field of music he is a keen jazz buff and has been in the audience on several occasions when I’ve been playing, both with a small group and with the Sticky Wicket Big Band Drum Spectacular which we put on at e Stables in Wavenden, the jazz Mecca established by the late and much lamented John Dankworth and his still-singing wife the fabulous Cleo Lane. So time spent with Laszlo is never silent and while visiting him last year I noticed and

remarked on two contemporary paintings hanging in the same room as the lady with the child and dog. ey had an instant appeal in the colourful and atmospheric representation of rural Hungary, full of light and shadows. Zoltan explained that the Impressionist movement had and still has an important influence in Hungary and a leading exponent is the artist Zoltan Grof – no relation – who painted the two I was admiring. Zoltan’s technique of using enamel-oil, give his paintings the power of colour achieved by traditional oils, with the luminescence of light and shade created by the modern medium of lacenamel. Zolton developed his skills and love of the medium as a student. e impressionist traditions of the famous Hungarian Nagybanya School which was founded as an artist’s colony in 1896 by Simon Hollosy, was the spark from which Zoltan developed his passion and skills to produce the vibrant and atmospheric paintings. In 2001 Zoltan was commissioned to create 24 large scale pictures for UNESCO, each commemorating the cities, towns and villages given World UNESCO status. His paintings are in numerous private collections in Hungary and abroad. At the time of writing we are holding an exhibition of Zoltan’s work in the grand Bedford Room at Woburn Abbey, the first we hope of many. We all meet fascinating people from time to time but there can be few occupations like mine where you have the opportunity to learn just how fascinating they really are and how they act as catalysts for other people with varying talents in such disparate fields.

ver the last twenty years every aspect of the home has been the subject of makeovers and upgrading. We have seen kitchens, bathrooms, conservatories, soft furnishings, gardens, sundecks, swimming pools: the list is endless. Or almost endless. e only area in a home that has not had the usual loving care is the garage: until now that is. After years of abuse, the lowly garage is finally getting a second chance thanks to GarageTek who are the leading garage storage and organisation company in America and have been operating in the UK for five years now. Alastair Broom, the Managing Director in the UK had been researching the options for garages for a number of years because, coming from a property background he could see the enormous potential that has been the garage.

62

NOVEMBER2011

THE WORLD’S CLEANEST GARAGE BY GARAGETEK “In many cases the garage is over 10% of the space in a house and yet owners have not had a sensible proposition to do anything with it. ey will happily leave their £50,000 Mercedes on the drive in all weather whilst there is probably £1,000 of odds and ends lying all over the garage floor. is really doesn’t make a lot of sense and I was determined to find a solution,” says Alastair Broom. “Added to that in a house with a value today of, say £750,000, 10% equates to the garage having a potential value of £75,000. Does it feel like that value to most owners? Why not increase its value and therefore the value of the house as well as making maximum use of the space?” THE BENEFITS OF GARAGETEK GarageTek will design and install a storage solution that gets everything off the floor and onto the walls in specially designed cabinets, baskets,

racks and hooks. e main benefits are that it is: n

Easy to keep clean and tidy

n

Gives a bright glossy look thereby increasing light

n

Easy to move and re-organise everything whenever you want

n

Weather-proof and bug-proof

n

Professionally designed and installed

n

Covered by a 10 year warranty

With options for the walls, floor, ceiling and over 80 different units there is clearly something for everyone. And there is no need to have the whole garage fitted: the system is so flexible that it is possible to have just one wall fitted, maybe with a new floor and the rest can be done at a later stage if that fits the budget better.

THE VALUE OF VERSATILITY e foundation of the GarageTek system is the patented TekPanel, a strong, attractive wall panel on which other system elements are attached. TekPanel is bright, strong and covers the walls of the garage and then a modular system of high performance cabinets, shelves, baskets and activity racks are added to the slotted walls with clip-on brackets. e GarageTek system can easily accommodate storage of various items. For example: n Sports enthusiasts can select activity racks specifically designed for stowing bicycles, fishing rods and tackle, sailing equipment, canoes, golf clubs and shoes, ski equipment or tennis equipment n Kids will love to have their own private lockers and racks for sports gear n Gardeners can organise their tools handily

Garage Tek__ 21/10/2011 11:23 Page 2

home i nterest

n Brackets, baskets and shelving handle household supplies, while lockable cabinets can keep paints and chemicals safe from young hands.

Woodworkers or hobby enthusiasts can create a well-organised workshop area with benchs, cabinets, part bins, tip-out bins, tool holders and hooks n

If storage needs or hobbies change, the beauty of GarageTek is its adaptability. Any layout changes are easy: the owner simply lifts and

slides the item to a new location. GarageTek also offers a choice of flooring system: an extraordinarily strong, stain resistant and easy to keep clean interlocking tile or a very popular seamless Resin coating that gives the garage a car showroom look. Like the entire GarageTek system, the flooring is custom designed

and versatile with a wide range of colours and patterns to choose from. CUSTOM DESIGN AND INSTALLATION When a homeowner is interested in a GarageTek system, the first step is a no strings attached free consultation where a GarageTek designer will create a custom rendering of the proposed garage organisation system using the Company’s own GarageVision software. e garage will be measured and designed to the owner’s needs and requirements and a

comprehensive colour layout and price structure is given to homeowners so that they can see exactly how their garage will look. “Whilst the do-it-yourself on a budget is not our core market we have sold a number of our systems and the owners will do the installation themselves” says Broom. “Our market is the homeowner who

understands value and wants the convenience and style of a GarageTek system which will create or enhance a lot of space in their home.” ENJOY THE GARAGE e final piece in the jigsaw is the enjoyment. It is the most important step. A GarageTek system gives so much more flexibility. Owners can re-configure the accessories anywhere on the walls at any time without the need for tools. If you need more accessories – no problem. GarageTek have them in stock and they can easily be added

Alastair Broom’s vision is for the garage to be considered on the same level of thinking as the rest of the home. “ In a few years I expect to see the GarageTek brand as a part of Estate Agents’ details in much the same way as the quality brands for kitchens are today.” One thing is clear: homeowners now have a serious and quality option for upgrading their garage to make it a highly usable space be it for storage, recreation or keeping that car in throughout the year. You can learn more about GarageTek and the

to the system at any time.

AND MOST IMPORTANTLY CUSTOMERS GENUINELY ENJOY USING THEIR GARAGE BECAUSE THEY ARE SUDDENLY A PLEASURE TO BE IN!

inter doesn't have to be drab and dreary when you've cleaned out your summer pots and put late summer bulbs such as dahlias into storage. ere's still time to plant spring bulbs in pots and if you're doing that, the best piece of advice is keep it simple.

ere are a few bits and pieces you can pick up from nurseries and garden centres to fill the gap. Pink heathers and cyclamen can make a pretty autumn planting scheme and quite an unusual hue from the normal burnt oranges, burgundies and yellows of autumn.

Choose one type of bulb for each pot and you're likely to have a more eye-catching display than if you mix your bulbs, which probably won't all flower at the same time.

Go for the heather Calluna vulgaris 'Annemarie', with pale pink buds which deepen as they open and are set off by pink-flowering Cyclamen hederifolium, with its pretty marbled leaves to lighten the scheme.

But there's a long time between now and spring, so how can you provide some colour?

Skimmia japonica 'Rogersii', planted nearby, will form clusters of red berries which last until the next flush of flowers, while the

WITH A LITTLE IMAGINATION, AUTUMN AND WINTER POTS CAN PROVIDE THAT MUCH NEEDED SPLASH OF COLOUR LONG AFTER ALL ELSE HAS FADED.

Alternatively, try the pink and purple shades of a variety of Aster novi-belgii, which is compact, bushy and suitable for container planting. If you have a galvanised bucket, the silver will go perfectly with the pinks, purples and bluey-green foliage shades.

Make the most of winter foliage by planting up hanging baskets with Mexican orange blossom (Choisya ternata Sundance), with its bright yellow leaves, contrasting with the dark foliage of Gaultheria procumbens, or wintergreen, which produces bright red fruit which lasts through the winter. Other colour can be added with violas, lamium and dark-leaved ivy. Some plants will be interesting now but will also flourish in 66

With a little imagination, autumn and winter pots can provide that much needed splash of colour long after all else has faded. BEST OF THE BUNCH RHUS (SUMACH) ey are grown for their brilliant autumn colours, their palm-like leaves turning rich orange, red or purple.

Other plants which look great in silver planters include the attractive purple evergreen Heuchera 'Stormy Seas', along with the silver-leaved Convolvulus cneorum and pink Cyclamen persicum which flowers in autumn or early spring. Container displays can be enhanced by berries of different colours. Try planting a gaultheria - a hardy, evergreen shrub with small oval glossy green leaves whose flowers in late spring are followed in autumn by clusters of bright, round fruits in shades of red and pale lilac, white, pink, purple or blue, depending on the variety.

e flowers of the rhus are insignificant but in late summer the female plants produce spikes of small crimson fruits. ese shrubs are often grown as small trees but need to be pruned regularly to stop them becoming leggy and untidy. e most common variety is R. typhina, the Stag's Horn Sumach, whose spreading branches will grow to 4m (12ft) or more if left to their own devices. ey do produce suckers, which will need removing to keep the plant under control. ey are best located in a woodland, as a background shrub or specimen and prefer to be grown in full sun in moist, well-drained soil. Another great addition is Rhus glabra, whose deep blue-green leaves turn a brilliant red in autumn.

Cyclamen Miracle series in a pot

e compact shrub Skimmia japonica 'Rubella' has oval-shaped, red-edged leaves and dark-red flower buds which form in autumn and winter, then open in late winter and early spring. A female clone, such as

hermaphrodite S. japonica 'Reevesiana', which can be planted on its own, produces clusters of bright red berries through the cooler months. Fun autumn colour in pots can also be provided by capsicums of all kind, planted up in

ey need a long, hot summer to fully ripen and develop their colour and plenty of watering when the fruits are swelling.

l Check bowls of bulbs planted for winter flowering indoors and don't let them dry out.

Pumpkins are frost-tender annuals, so should only be planted out after all danger of frost has passed. In cooler areas, sow the seeds direct at the end of spring or in modules indoors before planting out.

l Clear fallen leaves and save them to make leaf mould, which can be used as a mulch.

When three leaves have emerged, plant out the seedlings, which are sensitive to root disturbance. Plants need to be hardened off gradually under a cloche and planted in soil that has been warmed under a cloche beforehand. Pumpkins prefer a sunny spot in normal garden soil, mulched with a layer of compost. Each plant will need about three square metres (30 square ft) of space. e fruits are ready for harvesting when the stems dry and the skins harden, usually in mid-autumn. THREE WAYS TO... USE PLANT TEXTURES 1. Select shiny leaves, berries and fruits to reflect light into gloomy areas. 2. Use soft, downy foliage close to the front of a border, where you can brush past tactile plants, enjoying their full touchy-feely effect. 3. Plant trees with rough or peeling bark to create focal points in winter gardens. WHAT TO DO THIS WEEK l Continue to harvest fruit and vegetables. Apples and pears should be picked by the end of the month and maincrop carrots and potatoes lifted and stored for the winter.

l Net the pond to protect it from autumn leaves. l Bring in pelargoniums and half-hardy fuchsias growing in pots outdoors. l Plant garlic, spring cabbages and Japanese onions. l Lift gladioli corms for winter storage. l Cut back outdoor chrysanthemums as they finish flowering, lift them and store them in shallow boxes of compost. l As the likelihood of rain increases, cover alpine plants with hairy or downy foliage with a cloche or plastic supported on wire legs. l Remove the yellowing leaves of Brussels sprouts and firm the plants in with your feet. l Take pots of amaryllis, crinums and nerines inside to protect from frost and waterlogging. l In areas with established plants, top dress with well-rotted garden compost, but don't add fertilisers until early spring. l As the weather becomes colder, cover fruiting strawberries with cloches, tunnels of plastic sheeting or horticultural fleece to protect them at night. l

Repair worn lawn edges.

But Kelly Hoppen has chosen to use her own home to demonstrate those highly successful techniques that have won her a host of famous fans, including Gwyneth Paltrow, Anthony Hopkins, Jude Law and Elton John. Her uber-luxurious sanctuary is a homage to her renowned ‘East Meets West’ style with its uncluttered, opulent rooms; a distinctive use of balance and symmetry, and trademark colour palette of neutrals, including her signature ‘taupe’ shade. “Each of the homes I have designed and lived in myself has been an on-going exercise - an experiment if you like - where I have tried to understand how we see things, what gives us contentment and what we are really trying to achieve,â€? she explains. The sophisticated, tranquil setting is the result of a painstaking renovation of her period home in London, during which she ensured the interior was perfectly tailored to suit her lifestyle. “Choosing your home’s style is a similar process to choosing a piece of couture clothing - it should ďŹ t you like a glove,â€? she says of the setting, which features in Kelly Hoppen Ideas, her new book that includes a foreword by Victoria Beckham describing Hoppen as “a very dear friendâ€?. her private life (her stepdaughter is ďŹ lm star Sienna Miller), says simply: “I think nowadays, whoever we are, we all want a nurturing retreat that feels safe, comfortable and easy to live in.â€? Her own homes, she says, have always been characterised by an eclectic element - mixing vintage, contemporary, ultramodern and antique styles. But whatever a person’s taste, she insists, the guiding principle must be that “your

Living rooms can be integrated into an open-plan design or be just as eective as a separate grand space, she says. Hoppen’s spacious ďŹ rst-oor living room has a ďŹ replace as its focal point and a chimney breast covered in a panel of black glass within which a television is set. “Always think about where the main seating will be, where the television will be be, to help you decide the layout,â€? she advises. “A monochromatic palette fulďŹ ls my aim to make the room seem like a stunning black and white picture.â€? Flooring, she advises, must be timeless - not a fashion statement - as it will be in place for a long time and expensive to change. Hoppen loves: Sheer curtains

Hallways are often, wrongly, neglected areas in the home, says Hoppen, and can ag up personal style. In her hallway, recessed strip lights on either side of the treads and risers of the staircase make it appear to â€˜ďŹ‚oat.’ The lighting also has the eect of appearing to widen the space. “Halls should impress as well as being practical. Whenever I come home, I look forward to experiencing the sense of wellbeing that my hall engenders,â€? says Hoppen. Eye-catching features include a pair of Sixties zinc wall mirrors hung above a shelf displaying ower arrangements and tea lights. Hoppen loves: Full-height doors that run all the way up to the ceiling to increase a sense of space, as well as bespoke door handles and

ooring and furnishings that echo the overall feel of the rest of the home. 3<B3@B/7<7<5 H=<3

Kitchens are now as popular as dining and entertaining areas, and Hoppen has devised her own streamlined recipe for the space. In her home this area extends over the majority of the ground oor and incorporates a dining area leading on to the garden. “It’s deďŹ nitely the theatre at the heart of my home,â€? she says. “To cook and entertain at home is now cool and I have a ďŹ replace up on the wall like a painting, which is a focal point, and cosy in winter. “As I’m always hosting dinners and love having guests drinking and chatting while I cook, I wanted this to be an open and alluring space for friends to relax. “The island bar is where everyone gravitates - it’s not only a ‘chill and chat’ zone, it’s a place to work, read and have breakfast and so upholstered comfortable chairs are an essential.â€?

The dining area has its own character deďŹ ned by a large oak farmhouse-style table which Hoppen designed. Hoppen loves: Maximising space with an island bar on double-sided central units, using reective surfaces such as glossy lacquer or silky polished plaster and employing the colour taupe - a perfect neutral which creates an atmosphere of harmony and calm. >3@A=</: @3B@3/B

whether it will also function as a dressing room and extra private lounging area, she says. In Hoppen’s compact bedroom, a low, wide headboard and integrated bedside units help give an illusion of more space. “A bedroom is a treasured place, the ultimate comfort zone, and should be designed to please all your senses,â€? says Hoppen. “It’s your sanctuary and must be warm and inviting with lots of texture. My own bedroom is my hiding place and I’ve used a calm, taupe palette and concealed lighting to give the room a warm, seductive glow.â€? Hoppen loves: Adjustable lighting which gives you the freedom to alter the atmosphere to suit mood, shutters that ďŹ lter daylight softly and allow privacy, and fabrics such as linen, velvet and satin for a luxury look, plus a dressing table for jewellery and treasured possessions. So what does Simon predict will be the next big trend in contemporary furniture design? “I’d like to think great interiors are timeless. An interior should reflect an individual’s personality and lifestyle more than current trends." Although Chaplins are very proud of their showroom in Hatch End, Middlesex they also appreciate that buying trends are changing and people are using the internet for both research purposes and to make the occasional purchase. e Chaplins website (www.chalplins.co.uk)

The Jewel in the

Crown

e first met our client, a Dorset property developer, when he called in at our stand at the RHS Chelsea Flower show,â€? explains Crown Pavilions’ in-house Garden Designer, Carl Hooper. “He explained that he had admired our products for some time - and browsing our website noticed we have our own landscaping company (which, incidentally, was awarded the much coveted Merit Award for Outstanding Presentation),â€? he adds. “He wanted a beautiful garden complete with spacious gazebo, all of which would reflect the unique character of the main house. All elements had to work together in harmony as well as forming a sumptuous back-drop for relaxing and entertaining. Day or night, winter or summer, rain or shine‌ he wanted a year-round sanctuary where he could work, rest and play.â€? Unfortunately ‘sanctuary’ wasn’t the first thing that came to mind when Carl and the design team arrived on site one cold, damp March morning. “We had to clamber across rubble, weeds and rubbish,â€? he recalls. “The soil was poor and the drainage atrocious. However to our landscapers it was the perfect blank canvas and at the heart of this canvas would be the jewel in the crown: a bespoke 12-seater cedar gazebo with luxury dining, seating and lighting, fully wired for media and internet – an ‘escape’ that could be a haven of relaxation one minute and a glorious pleasure zone the next.â€? Crown Pavilions and its sister company Crown 76

Carl explains. “But, increasingly, we were finding people wanted us to handle the landscaping too – after all, when you’re investing in a state-of-theart gazebo you want a setting that does it justice!â€? So Crown Gardens was born to work in parallel with its sister company - and scores of sumptuous gardens-andgazebos later, they’ve attracted the attention of some of the world’s most discerning clients – people like Duncan Bannatyne for his Bannatyne Spa Hotel in Hastings and Canadian businesswoman Gabriella Atkinson for her home and riding centre at Bedgebury Park. “We’ve also created stunning sanctuaries overlooking the Mediterranean where the gazebo is more about sheltering from the heat than the rain or snow,â€? says Carl.

Home i nterest But wherever the location, the accent is firmly on creating the perfect haven to relax and entertain, and which requires minimum maintenance. “It’s important that everything - from the smallest exotic shrub to the most intricate cascading rock waterfall, from the plump feather-filled cushions to the siting of the gazebo itself - must work in complete harmony.” But unlike a painting on a canvas, a garden never looks the same. “Not only does it change dramatically according to the season, it must look amazing from every angle.” From the house to the garden room and back again, it’s a 360 degrees 3-dimensional entity that needs to look stunning and serve a multitude of different purposes “whether you’re putting your feet up at the end of the day or welcoming guests to a glittering celebration.” Then there’s the weather to contend with. “Soft furnishings must be fade and insect-resistant for the summer and mould-resistant in the wet season. Structures must be sturdy and low maintenance. Lighting must complement each other. And, of course, you need heat so you can get the most from the garden room all year round.” Inspired by a string of triumphs “which includes the transformation of our property developer client’s ‘building site’ into a breathtaking garden retreat”, Crown is now setting its sight on making clients’ outdoor spaces even more versatile. “These days, people want a garden in which they can do everything,” says Carl “We already have a popular range of gazebos with hot tubs. Now we’re about to introduce a range of bespoke garden offices and outdoor kitchens, vastly extending the scope of how you use your garden.” Contact: Rees Gidley or Barbara Anne Barber Tel 01491 612820. ritish genius and luxury goods designer Stuart Hughes has yet achieved another amazing and unique product for an anonymous leading Malaysian business man, calling his project ‘History Supreme’, probably the world’s most expensive yacht, putting Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich’s swanky yacht in the shade. The billionaire’s 533ft Eclipse, which has its own missile defence system and escape submarine, is the world’s biggest private yacht - but at £750million it is a snip compared to this creation. The 100ft super boat took 3 years to complete, with the use of 100 tons of solid gold and platinum to design the deck, dining area, rails, anchor, making the exclusive project absolutely unique. While the base of the vessel is wrapped in gold, a thin layer was formed to embrace this huge section, the stunning main sleeping quarter is adorned with platinum accents of which included, wall feature, made from meteoric stone, with genuine Dinosaur bone shaved in from the raptor T-Rex. There is also a wall feature in the master bedroom that is made from meteoric stone and an aquarium made from 68kg of 24 carat gold. An additional jaw-dropping feature aboard the ultraexpensive ‘History Supreme’ superyacht - which is fitting for the ultimate billionaire lifestyle: a glass enclosed

atrium perfect for dining in the epitome of high-style. Also on board is a luxury liquor bottle featuring an 18.5ct diamond, one of the world’s rarest. Worth almost ten times more than Eclipse, the largest yacht in the world, this creation of the gorgeous yacht costs THREE BILLION POUNDS! Stuart, 40, a jeweller from Liverpool said: “It was probably the most mammoth task ever.” Stuart - who also made a £5million diamond-wrapped iPhone added: “I’ve covered all sorts of things in gold but this has got to be my most ambitious project yet. This will never be topped. Mr Hughes, who has also used gold to customise other luxury goods like iPads and iPhones, added: ‘He wanted a plane doing as well but the thing would never take off if we did. “So he said, ‘Can you do the yacht?’ and I said, ‘We’ll give it a crack.’ Then it was pretty much a case of can you make this gold, can you make that gold? “We just did what we were told and are delighted with the result.” The anonymous leading businessman from Malaysia probably won’t be that anonymous after getting on this beauty. The yacht was built in Italy and completed in Malaysia last month.

BENTLEY CONTINENTAL GTC

THE LATEST SET OF WHEELS ARE TAKEN FOR A SPIN. THIS WEEK: BENTLEY CONTINENTAL GTC

good example of Bentley's confidence in its approach to making super-luxury cars. A new look inside and out to compliment the firm's flagship Mulsanne saloon is matched by a thorough revision of suspension, transmission and engine performance.

By Iain Dooley

I

t's only when you go barreling into a turn faster than you really should in Bentley's Continental GTC that you realise what an accomplished piece of kit it is. After leaning hard on the brakes to scrub off speed the steering remains accurate, communicative and uncorrupted by the sudden change in direction and the presence of any mid-corner bumps. For many this won't be the stereotypical image of a Bentley experience, though. Wafting along at a refined pace is the usual cliché, but since the arrival of the 'new' Bentley range under the Volkswagen Groups' stewardship unashamed performance and driver involvement have been key elements of the brand's philosophy. And this second-generation Continental GTC is yet another

Like the Continental GT coupe, the GTC drop-top boasts crisp exterior lines and fuss-free sheetmetal - much of it crafted using the latest manufacturing technology. Unlike the coupe it also boasts a large fabric folding roof that can be operated on the move and stows neatly behind the car's second row of seats. e four-seat GTC is not a small car, but now it has a wider track fore and aft to bolster its makers' claims of an improved driving experience. Revised suspension components, retuned steering and a 40:60 power bias to the rear (previously 50:50) and a faster responding auto gearbox all result in a more agile car despite its size. At the GTC's core is Bentley's familiar 6.0-litre 12-cylinder turbo petrol engine, with power going to all four wheels through a six-speed auto gearbox. Power has been upped slightly to 567bhp,

motors

while the engine's prodigious 516lb/ft of torque is what really impresses when out on the open road, and is a major reason behind the car's astonishing 4.5 second zero to 60mph time. Sprinting duties aside, you also notice the snappy nature of the GTC's gearbox, which is more responsive than of old and a beneficiary of technology found in the previous generation Supersports variant. e changes to the car's suspension, steering and track also add genuine value to the experience, with the car delivering a more engaging experience when you're in the mood to press on and better able to cope with road surface imperfections around town. Mind you, with the GTC's plush fabric roof up you'll struggle to hear much when sat in the car's supportive leather chairs. e overall experience is so good thanks to acoustic glass for the windows and better sound proofing that all

88

NOVEMBER2011

you can hear is the distant burble from the exhaust. at's a good thing if you want take it easy. Drop the roof and the situation changes; the exhaust's tone becomes more urgent and it's easy to hear the cackle and rumble when you lift of the throttle. You're still pretty well insulated from the elements, though. With the windows up and the wind deflector in place - do this and you will loose the rear seat space, however - and fast motorway driving is never a chore, plus you can still hold a civilised conversation. As with any Bentley the driving experience is only part of the story. e ability to personalise a car through different wood and fabric options is a key element of the ownership experience. e GTC's simple but elegant cabin design offers plenty of potential, and to the naked eye there's no complaints regarding the fit and finish of the various components.

Bently__ 21/10/2011 11:36 Page 3

motors

e GTC's cabin is also a modern one, with its clearly laid out controls and the dominant touch-screen sat-nav and entertainment display easy to use. is interface hides a powerful audio unit, phone and MP3 player connectivity and a fully-featured sat-nav function. You've also got all the safety-related mod cons plus driver adjustable suspension and a refreshingly grown up stability system that allows the you a little 'headroom' when you want to have some fun. All in all this second generation GTC is a useful step forward in terms of refinement, styling and performance. e car's evolutionary looks successfully complement the flagship Mulsanne saloon, while the available performance is staggering yet easily accessible. With Bentley bucking the trend with its sales figures, it's clear that the company is doing something right. It's also pioneering technologies and processes that will eventfully find their way into other Volkswagen Group cars, which is all the proof you need that it and its new GTC have a long and productive future.

They focused on ensuring that the Range Rover Evoque was agile and fun to drive, so particular attention was paid to steering precision and agility at lower speeds. As a result it offers a rewarding experience even during day-to-day urban driving but retains excellent body control and suffers no loss of poise. Taking ride and handling to the next level, Range Rover Evoque customers have the opportunity to specify a state-of-the-art new Adaptive Dynamics feature, which sees MagneRide™ dampers monitoring and adapting to vehicle movements 1000 times/second* to help minimise body roll and provide an even more balanced drive. These include the

When specifying the Adaptive Dynamics feature there is also an additional ‘Dynamic’ setting. For customers looking for reduced fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, the Evoque is the first Range Rover to offer a choice between the standard, full-time four-wheel-drive system and a front-wheel-drive option tuned to deliver the same agile handling. A choice of engines are available from a 150hp 2.2 litre turbo diesel eD4 engine that delivers less than 129g/km CO2 (in front-wheeldrive coupé form), to a 190hp SD4 version which gets from 0-60mph in 8.0 seconds when equipped with the automatic gearbox and a new 240hp 2.0 litre turbo-charged petrol engine capable of 0-60mph in just 7.1 seconds.

The Range Rover Evoque’s compact size has enabled engineers to minimise weight, improve aerodynamics and reduce the quantity of materials required to produce it. Each car also uses 16kg of recycled plastic material in components including wheel arch liners and the engine cover - diverting many tonnes of waste from landfill. The Range Rover Evoque represents desirable sophistication - priced from

A SPECIALIST SERVICE FOR LAND OWNERS IN PRIME LOCATIONS

S

ometimes you need an expert to make the most of an opportunity. Selling land to a developer is no exception and Lance Trendall, owner of e Land Office is in no doubt about his ability to offer specialist advice to land owners. e Land Office deals with prime locations and is turning its attention to Sandbanks, Branksome Park, Canford Cliffs, Poole, Bournemouth, Christchurch and the New Forest where the demand for development land is outstripping supply. With a long track record in property, including a period as a developer himself, Lance works with land owners to help them maximise the potential of their property when selling to a developer. “However successful someone has been in their career, when

they come to sell their home to a developer they are at a disadvantage unless they have someone like me on their side” comments Lance Trendall “Developers buy land all day long and know how to buy well and negotiate a very favourable deal, so it is worthwhile levelling the playing field by having an experienced land agent on your side.”

Lance maintains that a third party is really helpful as negotiating direct can result in accepting a low offer or failing to explore the terms of an offer thoroughly or getting the right deal. With such issues as overage, where you can get a share of the price achieved by the new homes built on your site above an agreed base price or an additional premium for deferring payment for land until new homes are sold, it is easy to see how complex land deals can become. Timing is another area where land sellers can fail to negotiate effectively. e Land Office were called in to help a land owner who had agreed a three year option with a buyer who never even made a planning application on the land. “It is fundamental to us to make sure there are performance-clauses requiring the land buyer to submit a

planning application within a certain time and a three year option is far too long and restrictive for the land owner.” With some amazing properties sold recently e Land Office has proven success, a recent sale of a single plot for £1.8 million resulted in a house being demolished to be replaced with a 10,000sqft new mansion, which e Land Office sold off plan with a guide price of £4.6M. e Land Office often sells the new homes following the land sale which can help the land owner claim any overage agreed with the builder. e ‘before and after’ photos show the improvement to the street-scene and the sort of house that is viable to develop in the right location. Mulberry House is another stunning home ‘coming soon’ through e Land Office, which enjoys an elevated 1.5

acre plot, making it really private and perfect for a celebrity, with 18,000sqft of beautifully designed accommodation. With the opportunity to buy this mansion off-plan, comes the chance to save tax as the buyer would only pay tax on the land, not the build contract, and have the house fully finished to their specification to create the dream palace! We wonder if a F1 driver might buy it as it includes a 10 car underground garage/showroom perfect for a collection of luxury cars. is property is in Beaconsfield, Bucks, another of the UK’s most sought after locations and is an example of the portfolio of clients looking for land through e Land Office. Your land may have development potential for an additional house on the plot or to be replaced with a mansion,

but even if it is a smaller plot where you can combine with a neighbour to create a building plot then e Land Office wants to hear from you.

for an impossibly large property that will never get planning approval so the deal may look good but will never happen.

“We work on all sorts of projects and have builders and developers calling us every day looking for land in prime locations. In addition to house and apartment builders, we have people looking for sites for care homes and retirement homes and even an American company wanting to build retirement villages in prime areas”

With the ethos of ‘experience, integrity and enthusiasm’ e Land Office tries to agree win-win deals that will proceed. “Having been a developer in the 1980’s, I understand the margins a developer needs, so I know how hard we can push on price and when to shake hands on a deal.” e Land Office offer a free initial appraisal for land owners so they can explore the development potential and discuss the various ways to harvest their land value which will compare the advantages of obtaining planning permission prior to selling or selling ‘subject to planning’ where the buyer pays all the architect and

Whilst e Land Office helps maximise the price for the seller, they are keen to explain that the deal must allow enough profit for a developer or it will never happen. Apparently some developers might be pushed too far on price and will need to apply

planning costs and purchases the land once planning is approved. is sounds a good place to start when you think you may be sitting on a goldmine of valuable development land. Whilst e Land Office is a Hertfordshire based company it has a site for sale with planning for 22 holiday lodges close to Loch Ness, was approached about a site for houses on the Isle of Man and is currently investigating a development opportunity in the Cayman Islands so Sandbanks is what they might call ‘within easy reach’. More information is available on e Land Office website www.thelandoffice.co.uk or you can ring them at their Hertfordshire HQ on 01582 461581.
