WEANING, WATER AND THE POWER OF WATCHING

SARA KEEL

Babycup First Cups Sara is a member of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on a Fit and Healthy Childhood and Founder of Babycup, a British brand making feeding products with children’s health in mind. Babycup First Cups are available from Ocado, JoJo Maman Bébé and branches of Waitrose www.babycup.co.uk

I

f your child is weaning or in the first couple of years of solids, it’s time to sit down and have a drink. Just to be clear, that’s sitting down with your little one and them having a drink of water or milk! It’s no surprise that we are our babies’ role models and what we do is part and parcel of their learning process. But research suggests babies actually use a ‘body map’ in their brain, allowing them to observe people and imitate body movements. This really does mean the power of mimicking is invaluable and takes the saying ‘do as I do’ to another level. So, sitting down together and making weaning a shared experience is very helpful. Leading dentists and orthodontists are recommending Babycup First Cups for this magical time. Childhood dental health is big news, with shocking statistics for preventable decay, and orthodontic issues such as crooked teeth and incorrect facial growth. Dentists and orthodontists are encouraging the use of these British-made mini open cups. They do not need to carry a dental health warning about the dangers of prolonged sucking, the sipping action does not bathe the tooth enamel in liquid in the same manner as sucking, and proper sipping does not compromise teeth and facial development. Weaning is the perfect time to start introducing sipping and the perfect proportions of Babycup First Cups means little ones master the art more easily. No spouts, no seals, and no bucket-like proportions, these little cups are designed specifically to be perfect for babies and young children. At Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, Katherine Pearce, Principal Dental Nurse and Dental Department Manager agrees: “As oral health professionals at GOSH, we encourage children to

6 FEBRUARY/MARCH 2017

move to an open cup as soon as possible to reduce the risk of dental caries which are often connected to bottles or sippy cups. Babycup First Cups offer the perfect colourful tool for parents to start this process with their children.” Start with a tiny amount of liquid in the cup and help guide it to your child’s mouth. With encouragement they learn brilliantly and sometimes even get it straight away. Children often feel proud. It’s lovely to see. One thing’s for sure, by sitting down and joining them, and sipping on your own drink from an open cup, they’ve got the best chance of learning well. Model the actions, let them observe. Older siblings can get in on the action as babies love to watch bigger children too. Our mini diners are taking it all in. It seems there’s science behind making mealtime a joint experience or even just sharing time sipping water. Sip hooray!

STOP SMOKING IN

PREGNANCY

later in life. Children whose parents smoke are more likely to suffer from asthma and other more serious illnesses that may need hospital treatment. The sooner you stop smoking, the better.

PASSIVE SMOKE HARMS YOUR BABY

P

rotecting your baby from tobacco smoke is one of the most important things you can do to give your child a healthy start in life. Every cigarette you smoke contains over 4,000 chemicals, so smoking when you are pregnant harms your unborn baby. Cigarettes can restrict the essential oxygen supply to your baby, so their heart has to beat harder every time you smoke. Benefits of stopping smoking in pregnancy Stopping smoking will benefit both you and your baby immediately. Harmful gases like carbon monoxide and other damaging chemicals will clear from your body.

WHEN YOU STOP SMOKING: • You will have fewer complications in pregnancy • You are more likely to have a healthier pregnancy and a healthier baby • You will reduce the risk of stillbirth • Your baby is less likely to be born too early and have to face the additional breathing, feeding and health problems that often go with being premature • Your baby is less likely to be born underweight: babies of women who smoke are, on average, about 8oz lighter, which can cause problems during and after labour, • You will reduce the risk of cot death, also called sudden infant death Stopping smoking will also benefit your baby 10 FEBRUARY/MARCH 2017

If your partner or anyone else who lives with you smokes, it can affect you and the baby both before and after birth. You may also find it more difficult to stop if someone around you smokes. Second-hand smoke can also reduce birthweight and increase the risk of cot death. Babies whose parents smoke are more likely to be admitted to hospital for bronchitis and pneumonia during the first year of life. More than 17,000 children under the age of five are admitted to hospital every year because of the effects of second-hand smoke.

NICOTINE REPLACEMENT THERAPY (NRT) You can use NRT during pregnancy if it will help you stop smoking, and you’re unable to without it. NRT contains only nicotine and none of the damaging chemicals found in cigarettes, so it is a much better option than continuing to smoke. NRT patches should be used for no more than 16 hours in any 24 hour period. If you have pregnancyrelated nausea and vomiting, you should not use patches. Pregnant women are advised to avoid liquorice flavoured nicotine products. Although there is no known risk with small amounts of liquorice flavouring, the manufacturers advise caution, based on information on the adverse effects associated with excessive amounts of liquorice root. As other flavours are available, pregnant women are advised to select an alternative, such as fruit or mint. For more information, call the NHS pregnancy stop smoking advice line on 0300 123 1044

LABOUR SIGNS: THE EARLY

SYMPTOMS

Expecting a dramatic Call The Midwife-style birth? Relax… Your due date’s getting closer, but how will you know the labour signs to look out for? Even the most subtle changes can indicate your baby’s on the way.

HEARTBURN RELIEF As your bump grows, your baby will push your stomach upwards. This forces acid in your stomach into your windpipe, causing heartburn. Luckily, in the weeks running up to your due date, you may notice symptoms get slightly better. This is because your baby has dropped, which means he’s moved down into your pelvis ready for birth. You may also find that you can breathe more easily because your baby isn’t pushing against your lungs and decreasing their capacity.

YOU HAVE BACKACHE An ache in your lower back can mean your baby is rotating into the right position for labour. This can take a few days and may be painful, It could also be the start of your contractions – some women experience them more in their back than their stomach. Get through the discomfort by taking the recommended dose of paracetamol, then put your feet up, ask your partner for a back rub and have warm a bath.

patches on your clothes, buy some disposable breast pads that you can pop inside your bra.

DIARRHOEA The hormones that help your uterus contract can also sometimes cause diarrhoea in the hours before birth. If this happens, increase the amount of water you’re drinking and hold off on milk or sugary drinks, which can make diarrhoea worse. Try eating bland food such as rice to keep your energy levels up.

SWOLLEN DOWN BELOW Pregnancy has a tendency to leave you feeling swollen in different areas of your body, and that includes your labia at the entrance to your vagina. It can be disconcerting, but it’s very normal. It’s caused by the increase in blood volume in your body. When your baby moves down into your pelvis, generally after week 37, it also puts more pressure around your vagina, making it feel swollen. Ease any discomfort by placing an ice pack in a clean tea towel and resting it on the area.

YOU HAVE A ‘SHOW’

FREQUENT TOILET STOPS

A mucus plug covers your cervix in pregnancy and this may come loose up to a few days before labour starts. A brown, pink or red-tinged stringy or jelly-like discharge, it can come out either in one lump or more gradually over a few days. Speak to a midwife just to make sure you’re not bleeding. If it’s bright red or the discharge starts to look heavy, head to hospital. If your midwife is happy, just eat, sleep and relax before things really get going.

With a growing baby bump that presses on your bladder, you’ll find you need to pee more regularly during pregnancy. But this could increase even further in the final week before birth, as your baby positions himself in your pelvis. Carry on drinking water as you don’t want to become dehydrated, but avoid coffee, soft drinks and citrus fruits as these tend to irritate the bladder.

YOUR NIPPLES LEAK

If getting up off the sofa is about as much activity as you can manage for most of your last trimester, the sudden spurt of energy you get in the days before labour starts (and the urge to clean out your kitchen cupboards) is often a not-unpleasant surprise. Make the most of it! Sort out the house, organise your baby’s clothes and set up a few change stations ready for her arrival home.

It’s not just during breastfeeding that nipples can leak – it’s all throughout your final trimester. That said, you’ll probably notice it most in the last few weeks before your baby arrives. The milk you’re leaking is colostrum, a nutrient-rich liquid that will nourish your baby until your proper milk comes in a couple of days after the birth. If you’re getting wet 12 FEBRUARY/MARCH 2017

SUDDEN BURST OF ENERGY

WALKING DIFFERENTLY If your gait has started to resemble a cross between a cowboy and a duck, (attractive!) it could well be a sign your baby will soon be arriving. Your pelvis widens in preparation for birth, which can affect the way you walk. If your walk has changed and you’re also experiencing discomfort, it could be a sign of pelvic girdle pain (PGP). Talk to your GP who may refer you to a physiotherapist. They can teach you exercises or provide a special belt to help support your pelvis.

YOUR WATERS BREAK Otherwise known as the moment the sac of amniotic fluid surrounding your baby ruptures. This can happen as an all-in-one gush, or a slow trickle that lasts a few days. Your waters can break any time during labour or birth, or they may be broken by a midwife to help kick-start labour. Your waters can break any time during labour or birth. If your waters do break, call the maternity unit. Once your waters break, you’re at risk of infection, so the midwives may want you to go in. They will also ask you about the fluid: it should be a straw-like colour and have a sweet odour. If your waters are green, your baby may have emptied her bowels, a sign of distress, and you’ll need to go to hospital to be checked over.

CONTRACTIONS Firstly, are you sure these aren’t Braxton Hicks? ‘These short, painless, tightening sensations mean your uterus is gearing up for labour. Real contractions tend to start weak, perhaps feeling like period pain, then grow in frequency and intensity. Don’t rush to hospital, but do let the unit know what’s happening. Instead, take the recommended dose of paracetamol and try to chill out. Established labour is usually when you have three, one-minute contractions in the space of 10 minutes. When the contractions become so intense, you struggle to talk, you’ll know it’s definitely time to head to hospital.

PACK YOUR BAGS! What you’ll need for labour and birth

W

herever you’re planning to have your baby, you should get a few things ready at least two weeks before your due date. If you’re planning to give birth in a hospital or midwifery unit, your midwife will probably give you a list of what you’ll need to pack.

YOU MAY WANT TO INCLUDE: • Something loose and comfortable to wear during labour that doesn’t restrict you from moving around or make you too hot – you may need about three changes of clothes • Two or three comfortable and supportive bras, including nursing bras if you’re planning to breastfeed – remember, your breasts will be much larger than usual • About 24 super-absorbent sanitary pads • Your washbag with toothbrush, hairbrush, flannel, soap and other toiletries • Towels • Things to help you pass the time and relax – for example, books, magazines or music • A sponge or water spray to cool you down • Front-opening or loose-fitting nighties or tops if you’re going to breastfeed • Dressing gown and slippers • Five or six pairs of pants • A loose, comfortable outfit to wear after you have given birth, and to come home in • Clothes (including a hat) and nappies for the baby • A shawl or blanket to wrap the baby in

TRANSPORT Work out how you’ll get to the hospital or midwifery unit, because you could need to go there at any time of the day or night. If you’re planning to go by car, make sure it’s running well and that there’s always enough petrol in the tank. If a neighbour has said they will take you, make an alternative arrangement just in case they’re not in. If you haven’t got a car, you could call a taxi. Or call your maternity unit, which can arrange for an ambulance to pick you up.

HOME BIRTHS If you’re planning to give birth at home, discuss your plans and what you need to prepare with your midwife. Think about where in your home you want to give birth. You’re likely to need: • Clean linen and towels • Clothes (including a hat) and nappies for the baby •About 24 super-absorbent sanitary towels

IMPORTANT NUMBERS Wherever you’re planning to give birth, keep a list of important numbers in your handbag or near the phone. You need to include: Your hospital or midwife’s phone number Your partner or birth partner’s phone number Your own hospital reference number, which is on your card or notes (you will be asked for this when you phone in)

HEALTHY MUMS-TO-BE Being pregnant is really exciting, and having a baby is the most amazing thing that can happen in our lives.

H

ere is an essential guide to keeping you and your baby healthy throughout your pregnancy. When you’re pregnant, eating healthily is doubly important. That’s because every day your baby’s brain and organs are growing and it needs lots of the right nutrients to do this. Eating healthily during pregnancy can also help your baby after it’s born, reducing its risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes. And for you, being healthier overall can also help lessen the risk of depression after your baby is born.

EAT FOR YOU, NOT FOR TWO In the past, it was thought that you need to eat for you and your baby during pregnancy. But we now know that you only need to eat for you. Being pregnant doesn’t mean that you’ll automatically put on weight. Maintaining a healthy weight during pregnancy means it’s easier for you to carry your baby, and to have fewer complications at birth. It also means that your baby is more likely to be a healthy weight – both at birth and as they grow up.

FOODS TO INCLUDE Eating a variety of foods will help your baby to get the range of nutrients that it needs to develop and be healthy. • Fruit and vegetables: try to eat at least 5 portions of fruit and veg a day, to provide the vitamins, minerals and fibre your baby needs. 20 FEBRUARY/MARCH 2017

• Starchy foods (carbohydrates): Bread, potatoes, breakfast cereals, rice, pasta and noodles. Try to eat wholemeal versions if you can. • Protein: Meat, fish, poultry, eggs, beans, pulses and nuts. Protein provides the building blocks for your baby to grow. • Dairy products: Milk, cheese and yoghurt. These contain calcium, essential for healthy bones.

A HEALTHIER BABY

Being active during pregnancy means you’re likely maintain a healthier weight and be able to cope better with the physical demands of pregnancy and labour. It also reduces the risk of miscarriage, stillbirth, birth defects and diabetes. Being active can also prevent you from getting high blood pressure, which can result in a stillbirth.

AND A HEALTHIER YOU 150 minutes of walking a week makes it easier to get

back to your normal weight after your baby is born. It can also: • Give you more energy, help you sleep better, and reduce stress, anxiety and depression. • Make you stronger, so you can carry the weight of your growing baby. • Prepare your body for the physical challenge of labour. This can help to make labour quicker and reduce the risk of complications. • Help to lessen the risk of depression after your baby is born.

BABY ON THE WAY, QUIT TODAY!

If you smoke while you’re pregnant, your baby smokes too. If there ever was a moment for you and your partner to quit, it’s now. It’s the most important decision you can make for your baby. Know the risks It’s difficult to imagine when you can’t see your baby, but smoking when you’re pregnant is like blowing smoke in your baby’s face. Even other people’s cigarette smoke will pass into your bloodstream and from there into your baby. Smoking when pregnant increases the chances of miscarriage, stillbirth and cot death. A baby whose mum smoked is at least 25% more likely to die from cot death than a baby whose mum didn’t smoke. It may be that you know people who have smoked when pregnant and their baby has been fine – but you are gambling with your baby’s health.

CREATE A DREAM NURSERY Designing your baby’s nursery is one of the most exciting and memorable projects a parent will do, and is the first step to welcoming your baby into your family.

I

t is important that it is a space of beauty, tranquility but also of practicality. Your nursery has to be functional as well, so before purchasing furniture think about safety and function but also style, the purpose, and the activities that will take place in there. Besides the obvious sleeping and feeding, consider storage and your lifestyle too. Start by measuring your space as it gives you an informed platform to build on. Nursery furniture comes in different shapes and sizes

22 FEBRUARY/MARCH 2017

so you need to take a lot into consideration like alcoves and awkward spaces.

YOUR TASTE

To prevent being overwhelmed with the plethora of cot styles, look at your home to determine your personal taste. Are you a city slicker or countryloving? Do you love nature and prefer natural woods or even eco-friendly furniture? If the rest of your house is sleek and

contemporary for example, there’s no reason why you can’t carry the look into your baby’s room. With careful thought, the colours, decorations and lighting can please young eyes and grown-up tastes alike. Be inspired by stylish designs and create a space both you and your little one can enjoy. Stay neutral - If the cot were removed from your nursery, would it still look like a nursery? That’s the ultimate test of creating a stylish room that goes with your home and grows with your child. Painted furniture gives you the flexibility to create a space that really coordinates with the rest of your décor.

KEEP IT SIMPLE

Babies need lots of stuff, but keeping surfaces free from clutter is key to a stylish nursery. Good storage makes sure essentials are tucked out of the way, while wooden flooring allows you to wipe up spills easily. To keep the simple mood, avoid lots of pictures and go for one striking, graphic decal to create an interesting focal point for your baby.

MAKE IT PERSONAL

Add personality to your nursery by going beyond predictable character themes. Incorporate treasured family mementos, to create an individual look. Let there be light - Babies are known to have scant regard for the fact that night-time is really for sleeping, but you can train your little one early on (to an extent…). So getting lighting right is essential – for both of you! You don’t want to blast your baby with 100w at 2am, so make sure you have soft lighting for night-time feeds. You will also need sufficient light by your feeding chair for reading. Don’t limit your choice to novelty designs: use the same type of floor and table lights you might choose for a living room or master bedroom.

NURSERY FURNITURE

The cot tends to carry the bulk of the design so choose that first. Most retailers sell nursery furniture as a collection. This means that you can purchase coordinating pieces like the changing unit, wardrobe, shelving etc. Some companies even supply single and double beds as part of the range so you only need to purchase one item later on and you’ll still have a coordinating bedroom. If space is limited consider purchasing dual purpose furniture, like changing units that have a removable changing top set atop a chest of drawers. This gives its use longevity and it carries on being used long after baby outgrows the nursery.

The cot will be the most important purchase in your nursery. You can choose from ‘classic’ and ‘modern’, to ‘vintage’ and it will set the theme for the whole room. Your choices range from wood or iron, antique, traditional or modern to natural finish, painted or eco-friendly. A rocking chair gives you yet another opportunity to add a design touch to your nursery. Functionality should come first, with design being a priority as you want this purchase to be enjoyed by you and your little one for the years ahead. If the chair you love does not fit your design story, why not have some fun with upholstery to make it work for you?

BABY BED LINEN

Nursery bed linen again comes in many shapes, styles and sizes and the same principle applies that we use to choose furniture. Traditional bed linen are quite easily identified, frills, checks, florals, etc. while contemporary baby bedding will be again rather fuss-free and simple. Think neutrals, geometric patterns and crisp predictable styles. For a true luxe design, go for bespoke bedding this is where you or your designer can select suitable fabrics in your chosen theme or colour.

“Babies need lots of stuff, but keeping surfaces free from clutter is key to a stylish nursery”

WALL COLOURS

Notice we haven’t talked about wall colours yet. This is because it is easier to match paint to bedding than the other way round. It is safer to choose your bed linen first because you wouldn’t choose one in a colour you don’t love. Once this is safely done, pick a colour from the bed linen. Go for a soft colour as you’re creating a serene space that you’ll be walking into at 2am in the morning! Plus of course your baby needs a relaxing space. If your favourite colour is a deep colour and your space is small, tone it down to a softer shade in the same colour palette. Bold colours pull the walls in and make a small space feel smaller. The reverse is also true; lighter colours make the walls recede.

FINISHING TOUCHES

Now that the mainframe of your nursery is formed, add the finishing touches to your design. Decorative accessories like a rug, artwork, clocks, etc all place a stamp on your baby’s space. A mobile hung above the cot are perfect to engage and calm a baby. Take time to select one that communicates your design message, pleasing you as much as your baby! FEBRUARY/MARCH 2017 23

WRITTEN IN THE STARS I

n the summer of 2016 something was happening, in a South West London office the exciting plans of a husband and wife team were met simultaneously by an alignment of the stars. Staring out to a beautifully dark night sky unblemished by bright city lights on a trip to Greece we dreamt of being able to harness the beauty of each shining light laid out in front of us and bring that bright, perfect star quality to every piece of our Sterling Silver, Rose Gold and Diamond range of jewellery. It was then that Cosmo the Rabbit was born, his job to catch falling stars so we can put that special piece of star quality in each of our lovingly designed pieces. With over 20 years experience designing market leading children’s jewellery at our core we have teamed up with manufacturers of the highest quality and ethical standards to bring you not only something that comes from our heart, but something we can also be proud of knowing will stand the test of time as your special memento. We know that every new life and the bond that makes is special and special occasions need to be marked. We therefore made it our work to find the perfect way to cherish not only the joy that new life brings, but also any special milestone through the growth of your special one whether that be a birthday, a first day at school or even the most important occasion of all, just say I love you.

Boost your Child’s Immunity I

f your little ones have started school, the last thing you want is for them to arrive with coughs and sneezes. With over 58% of all cases of children missing school due to illness, according to the Department of Education. But there are healthy habits you can adopt that will give your child’s immune system a boost…

BOOST IMMUNITY THROUGH THEIR TUMMY Try to get your kids to eat a variety of vegetables and fruits. Doing so will give them exposure to the widest range of different vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, as well as ‘train their taste buds’ to appreciate healthy foods, and help boost their immune system. Children often like fruit and can be willing to try new types. However, veggies can be more of a challenge. Make sure you give their vegetables plenty of flavour, with bright coloured vegetables that look a bit more inviting.

GET ENOUGH SNOOZING TIME Poor sleep can affect the immune system so it’s crucial that your bundle of joy is getting enough. Magnesium is known as ‘nature’s tranquiliser’ and is needed to relax our muscles and nerves, so it’s important to make sure your children are getting enough magnesium to help them fall into a peaceful sleep. It has been scientifically proven that magnesium can help not only initially get to sleep, but to stay asleep as it can improve the hormonal and neurotransmitters balance in the brain. To ensure your children are getting enough magnesium try and include plenty of magnesium-rich foods in their diet. Think: pumpkin and sunflower seeds, fish and leafy green vegetables. To help your children get their daily dose of magnesium it is worth looking at Natures Plus Animal Parade MagKidz (£13.95, www.naturesplus.co.uk), which provides a natural source of this essential nutrient, in a delicious cherry flavoured mix drink.

GUARD AGAINST GERM SPREAD Fighting germs doesn’t technically boost immunity, but it’s a great way to reduce stress on your child’s immune system. Make sure your kids wash their hands often -- and with soap. You should pay particular attention to their hygiene before and after each meal and after playing outside, handling pets, blowing their nose, using the bathroom etc. When you’re out, carry disposable wipes with you for quick clean-ups. To help kids get into the hand-washing habit at home, let them pick out their own brightly coloured hand towels and soap in fun shapes, colours, and scents.

UP THE GOOD BACTERIA Probiotics help keep the gut healthy, which in turn assists the immune system in functioning correctly. Give the kids vital nutrients every day before school 30 FEBRUARY/MARCH 2017

Probiotics help keep the gut healthy, which in turn assists the immune system

to help keep the lurgy at bay. Pro-Ven Probiotics Fit for School Stick Pads (Boots, £7.75) has been proven to half the days of illness. It gives them the vitamin C they try their best to avoid in fruit and veg. Most importantly for flu season, it provides billions of Lab4 friendly bacteria that help their immune system.

GIVE YOUR CHILDREN THE SUNSHINE THEY NEED We rely on the action of the sun on our skin for our main source of vitamin D, so our levels can go down when the days get shorter and darker. Even when outdoors with some skin exposed, very little vitamin D is produced due to the angle of the sun during these months. Most of us associate vitamin D with ensuring adequate absorption of calcium for our bones (which is one of its many important functions especially when our children are growing), but it also plays a crucial role in the normal functioning of the immune system.

WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR MENINGITIS

Based on some of your biggest worries, we have compiled a children’s health check to help keep your little ones safe and well

Many parents assume their child has been vaccinated against meningitis, but the jabs don’t protect against all forms of the disease. Symptoms can seem cold or flu-like at first, but young children and babies can become dangerously ill with hours. What to do: Look out for a high fever with cold hands and feet, drowsiness and confusion, continuous crying and a blotchy red rash that doesn’t fade when you place a glass over the top. Don’t wait for a rash to appear – seek medical help.

CHOKING

A recent survey showed that 58% of parents are worried about their children choking, but 79% wouldn’t know what to do if it suddenly happened. Choking is one of the highest killers of children under five. What to do: Symptoms are usually obvious in older kids – they grab their chest or neck and have trouble breathing. Lay the child face-down along your thigh, supporting their head, then give up to five sharp blows between their shoulder blades with the heel of your hand. If this doesn’t work, give up to five abdominal thrusts by holding the child around the waist, then pull upwards and inwards above their belly button. Repeat these steps, and call 999 if necessary.

MEASLES

Measles shouldn’t just be thought of as a normal part of growing up – it is potentially one of the most deadly childhood illnesses. What to do: Ensure your child gets the MMR vaccine – it’s safe and effective, and protects against mumps and rubella too. Babies are given one injection, then a second usually between 3-5 years. 32 FEBRUARY/MARCH 2017

ANAPHYLAXIS

This is a severe allergic reaction and can be brought on by anything from insect bites to eating nuts or shellfish. Children commonly develop a blotchy rash, swelling in the hands, feet or face, and have difficulty breathing. What to do: Anaphylaxis can be potentially fatal, as swelling blocks the child’s airway. Call 999 if your little one suddenly develops these symptoms.

BUMPS TO THE HEAD

Minor head injuries are part and parcel of everyday life for children. But it’s important to monitor any bump to the head for the next 48 hours, in case the injury is serious. What to do: In the first instance, apply something cold, like a pack of frozen veg, to reduce swelling. Symptoms to look out for over the next couple of days include difficulty staying awake, seizures, slurred speech, clear fluid coming from the nose or ears, and vomiting. Take them to A&E with anything that appears unusual.

BURNS

A massive 500,000 children are injured in the home each year, and 50,000 go to A&E suffering from burns. What to do: Put the burn under cold water for 10 minutes. Then cover it with something non-fluffy, like a tea towel or clingfilm. If it is a bad burn, call 999.

POISONING

Every day in the UK, an average of 58 children end up in A&E after being accidently poisoned with substances such as bleach. What to do: Find out exactly what they have swallowed, and if possible, the quantity so you can tell medical staff. Either call 999 or take your child straight to the hospital, remembering to take the offending bottle or container with you.

PARENTS URGED TO WATCH ST JOHN AMBULANCE’S NURSERY RHYMES VIDEO TO LEARN LIFE-SAVING BABY CPR

P

arents are being urged to watch a video that will teach them how to perform baby CPR. St John Ambulance created the animated video after discovering only one in four parents know what to do if their babies stop breathing. The video is part of their Nursery Rhymes Inc. campaign that features Incy Wincy Spider, Humpty Dumpty, Jack and Jill, and the Cat and the Fiddle learning CPR. Sue Killen, CEO at St John Ambulance, said: “We know that a major barrier to parents learning is that baby CPR frightens them, so we’ve removed the fear factor and made it reassuring and as easy as possible to learn. We hope the song will stick in everyone’s heads. We’re asking everyone to share the video so that all parents, grandparents and carers

can learn what to do in those crucial minutes after a baby has stopped breathing.” St John Ambulance’s survey of 2,000 parents, conducted by OnePoll, found an “unconscious child” is the most frightening scenario for 74% of parents. Most parents who know first aid (62%) learned it through a workplace first aid course, yet the charity said baby CPR is different to adult CPR. Only 26% of parents had learned first aid specifically for babies. The charity hopes the easy step-by-step video tutorial will teach baby CPR in a short, clear and reassuring way to help parents remember what to do in an emergency. To watch the video and find more information of baby first aid courses for parents, visit www.sja.co.uk

THE CHARACTERS OF NURSERY RHYMES INC. EXPLAIN THE STEPS TO SAVING A BABY WHO’S UNCONSCIOUS AND NOT BREATHING: 1. Call 999/112 for an ambulance. If you’re on your own, you need to give one minute’s worth of CPR before you can call for help, taking your baby with you.

2. 5 puffs. Put your lips around their mouth and nose, and blow steadily for up to one second. Give five puffs in total.

3. 30 pumps. Using two fingers placed in the centre of the chest, give 30 pumps at a rate of 100120 per minute

4. Repeat, but with 2 puffs followed by 30 pumps until help arrives. The video features the voices of comedians Adam Buxton and Tim Key.

IS YOUR TODDLER EATING TOO MUCH? BY LISA SALMON

I

t’s not easy to be sure how much food to serve to toddlers - and it seems some parents are getting it wrong. New research suggests more than 79% of parents routinely offer bigger than recommended portions to preschool children. And parents unwittingly giving their toddlers too much food is putting the youngsters at risk of obesity, warns the Infant & Toddler Forum (ITF), which carried out the survey of 1,000 UK mums and dads.

PRACTICAL Paediatric dietician Judy More, an ITF member, says: “Practical advice for parents on appropriate portion sizes for toddlers has been lacking, so it’s not surprising our survey revealed a significant lack of understanding about how much to feed toddlers. With new evidence linking larger portions to excess weight gain, it’s clear parents need practical advice.” In a bid to make the appropriate portion sizes clearer to parents, the ITF has launched the #rethinktoddlerportionsizes campaign, supported by 4Children, Family Lives and the Pre-school Learning Alliance. The campaign aims to encourage families to rethink how much is on toddlers’ plates and is calling for guidance on appropriate portion sizes for families of young children to be a key public health strategy in the fight against obesity. As part of the campaign the ITF, an independent, multi-disciplinary team of experts on infant and toddler nutrition, has created a guide to the recommended portion size ranges for children aged one to four years www.infantandtoddlerforum.org/ portionsizes

ADULT PORTIONS The ITF research found more than 10% of parents usually serve their child close to an adult-size portion of spaghetti Bolognese or sandwiches - yet 73% are more concerned their child doesn’t eat enough than that they eat too much. In fact, only 25% of parents worry their child might become overweight in the future. 36 FEBRUARY/MARCH 2017

However, just a quarter are ‘very confident’ about the amount of food to give their child.

FOOD RESEARCH There’s also a tendency for parents to use food or drink between meals as a pacifier, with 36% of parents offering food ‘treats’ to calm upset children. Experts warn that using food or drink as a reward to comfort and/or distract encourages young children to rely on food to deal with emotions, teaching them to continue this behaviour in later life.

Larger portions form our view of what’s an appropriate amount to eat, and this becomes the norm Larger portions form our view of what’s an appropriate amount to eat, and this becomes the norm. In other words, how much you offer often determines how much your child will eat, and habits learned in early life generally tend to persist, It’s never too early to start promoting healthy eating habits.

of shoes? A. When they start walking most of the day by themselves and ready to walk outside, they will need a pair of shoes to protect their feet.

Q:Why is it so important for children to have their feet checked and measured regularly? A. It is important to monitor the growth of your children’s feet and get advice if necessary. Many foot troubles in adults are caused by illfitting shoes in childhood.

Q. How fast do a child’s feet grow? A. This cannot be generalised. They grow faster in their early years but growth will not be at a regular rate, rather in spurts. Younger children can grow by up to 2.5 size a year.

Q. What is the benefit of going to a fitting specialist? A. Every pair of feet is different and requires special attention. A fitting specialist can recommend the right shoes that are comfortable and will allow the feet to grow healthily. Q. When do children need their first pair 42 FEBRUARY/MARCH 2017

Q. How often should a child have his/her feet checked? A. Every 6-8 weeks for infants and young children (0-4 years) and 10-12 weeks thereafter. Q. Do you have any other advice for parents? A. If you can go to a shoe fitter, do that rather than buy shoes on line. Also, don’t wear hand-me-down shoes. No two pairs of feet are identical.

CHILD MODELLING: A PARENT’S GUIDE

agency will have enough children applying to them not to advertise. • Don’t rush into signing a contract. Genuine agencies will always want to meet your child in person and will let you read any paperwork in your own time. • Visit the website of the National Network for Children in Employment & Entertainment (NCEE) for more information on the employment of school-age children. • Be realistic. If you don’t want your child to work during school time, she’s unlikely to get work as most shoots will occur during the working day. And above all, make sure everyone is enjoying it. If your child stops having fun - don’t continue just because you want them to.

D

o you think your child has what it takes to be a child model? Modelling can be a fantastic, social and fun experience for children of any age. Every parent thinks that their child is the most beautiful, but what if everyone else seems to thinks so too? Does that mean he or she is a potential child model? The world of child modelling isn’t all glamour. You need to be quite realistic about what a shoot involves. There is a lot of waiting around so parents should be well prepared with plenty of books and games. And even if your child gets a job, there is still no guarantee the pictures will be used. For commercials, they tend to book a variety of ‘types’ of children, not deciding until the day who they will use.

HERE ARE SOME MORE TIPS: • Choose your agency carefully. A good model agency will save you time and stress, and help your child’s modelling career, helping you find the best jobs for your child, making sure their needs are put first and the law is complied with. • Don’t waste money on professional photos when applying to agencies. A good model agency will need only to see snapshots to decide whether your child has potential. • Avoid agencies advertising for children; a genuine

Avoid agencies advertising for children; a genuine agency will have enough children applying to them not to advertise To find a reputable agency, it pays to do a little homework. Contact advertising agencies, magazines, catalogues and clothing companies to see which agencies they use regularly. If possible, visit the agency. Your agency will send the model book out to clients; set up auditions, or ‘castings’; organise payment (and take around 25% commission) and secure you a licence. The licence is a Government requirement for all children aged from six months to 16 years. It is applied for through your Local Education Authority regardless of whether your child has started school. LEA requirements can vary from area to area, but generally a licence will enable your child to work between 20 to 30 times over a six-month period. The money can vary – from £40 a job to thousands. The average rate is £40 an hour, but you will also get paid for castings (around £25). Advertising pays considerably more than editorial work but it is also much harder to get.

Q&A WITH KERIKIT’S KERI jewellery! My designs help you stay super organised and gain you those extra few minutes every day so you leave the house looking gorgeous. What was the journey like from idea to finished product? I won’t deny that at times it has been challenging. I did the designs whilst I was on maternity leave and while the twins were very small and sleeping, however it’s also been very rewarding. As with most mothers I seem to be a lot more emotional than before I had children and can easily be reduced to tears when I receive a testimonial from a customer. It’s not just that they have taken the time to write to me, it’s that they then go on to tell me all the benefits of their chosen style and how they love their KeriKit bag more than any of the designer bags they had previously.

Hi Keri, thank you for agreeing to be interviewed by us. Can you tell us a bit about yourself ? I am a mother of 3 young children: Jasper, my twins Charlie and Aryella and my new baby - KeriKit! I have a never ending list of things to do but I love my new life where I get to design beautiful handbags whilst watching my children grow up. It’s a juggling act and hard work but totally worth it! What is Kerikit? KeriKit is the new breed of handbags that are truly multifunctional and designed to change with you. The idea behind KeriKit came to me through a genuine frustration with the range of changing bags available during both my pregnancies. I needed a bag big enough for all our things but also stylish and high quality. Having worked as a designer and then a senior buyer for the past 25 years, I like and understand beautiful and well made pieces. This combined with my desire to find a career that could work around my family led me to create my debut range last year. As a Mum, your designs really appeal to me, because they don’t look like changing bags. What sparked the inspiration behind your designs? Exactly that. I wanted my bags to be desirable to everybody. Not just new mothers but business women and any lady that enjoys a little bit of luxury in their lives and understand the importance of quality. When you become a mother you can often feel like you’ve lost your identity. Everyone knows you by your child’s name and often by the time you have got your little ones up and out of the door you realise you didn’t have time to apply any makeup or 52 FEBRUARY/MARCH 2017

What is your favourite aspect of what you do? Being your own boss has its ups and its downs! I just ‘try’ to get the best out of it. I am able to make it work around my family which is the main reason for launching my own business. In my old career there was a lot of travel and the hours were long. The hours are still long but they are my hours and I can work them around my family and key events so I don’t miss them! I am really passionate about design and I am proud of the range I have created. They have not been made to conform to a price and as such every detail has been carefully thought through to ensure the person who buys a KeriKit bag is getting the very best value for money with the highest quality leathers and workmanship. What plans do you have for KeriKit over the next 12 months? We have now launched our personalisation service which everyone loves! It allows you to make your limited edition bag even more personal and unique to you and we love it when people get creative. We are thrilled to be venturing into America this spring as KeriKit is stocked in Nordstrom and we have a really exciting collaboration with Egg Strollers this year too but that’s all I can say right now! GUIDE TO ETIQUETTE FOR CHILDREN

F

or once the despairing pundits, pollsters and commentators are in agreement: children’s manners are getting worse. Table manners are a thing of the past, respect for elders is out of the window, and so on. Yet many parents riposte that it is no longer a question of manners, it’s a question of natural behaviour. Their little darling may like to be louder than the town crier, may want to crawl round other people’s feet in a restaurant, may need to have their parent’s instant attention for their own important demands - but they’re just children, and who are we to say that these natural impulses should be cramped within our own narrow view of manners?

a go on the swing etc. Again, repetition is valuable. • Remind them of their ps and qs. This effectively means endlessly reiterations of “say please”, “say thank you”… • Teach your children not to interrupt when you’re speaking. Again, repeated reminders work best. • Teach your child to listen carefully. This might entail them getting rewards for sitting still and listening attentively. Listening well is an incredibly important social skill, which will prove invaluable when it comes to making conversations.

Why not try and find a compromise between old-school stiffness and laissez-faire carelessness? Follow these basic precepts: • Teach your child empathy from an early age. Keep reiterating remarks like “how would you feel if someone said that to you?”, and you’ll get your child into the habit of thinking about the impact their behaviour has on others. • Emphasise the importance of sharing. This doesn’t come naturally, so you have to actually tell children to offer sweets around, give other kids

Table manners are by no means natural. Eventually you will have to teach children to wield and knife and fork correctly, not slurp from a glass, and may even introduce them to the arcane mysteries of correct cutlery usage, tipping soup bowls way from you etc. Don’t get bogged down in these minutiae. Concentrate instead on the absolute essentials. And always bear in mind that if you get too uptight about manners, you will turn family mealtimes into an absolute purgatory that is dreaded by children

and adults alike. Repeated lectures about nagging remarks about shortcomings do not make for a convivial atmosphere. Absolutely Essential Table Manners • Wait until everyone has started before you do; if you are specifically invited to start immediately, it is acceptable to do so. • Always eat with your mouth closed. • Always use cutlery (fingers are for bread, fruit and barbecues) • Never reach across the table and help yourself to food; always ask for food to be passed to you (a please won’t go amiss). • Eat as much as you can, then put your knife and fork together on the plate to indicate you have finished. • Ask permission to leave the table, or wait until there is a general move to do so Debrett’s Cygnets, classes teaching dining etiquette for children from the age of 7. LEARNING YOUR

A,B,Cs

Our definitive guide to help you make all the right choices for your children

T

here are 2,500+ independent schools in the UK which are independent of local or central government control. Independent schools offer a wealth of facilities and high teaching standards that enable students to achieve great results year after year. Independent schools are in the unique position to provide a truly bespoke education for your child. Choosing the right school for your child is an important decision that takes plenty of time and research. There are a wide range of independent schools specialising in different age groups and needs.

PRE-PREPARATORY SCHOOLS (AGES 2 YEARS - 7 YEARS) Pre-preparatory schools - also called nursery schools or kindergartens - correspond to nursery and infants stages in local authority schools. In pre-preparatory schools children are taught to read, write, develop numeracy and learn to play. Pre-prep schools are often attached to specific junior schools.Pre-prep school is the first time most children will experience education, as opposed to the daycare provided by kindergartons. Children will have to learn the basics of mathematics, science and English, and a host of other subjects. Outside the classroom, many of the children will be having their first proper experience with team sports, music and/or choral tuition, and the arts.

PREPARATORY SCHOOLS (AGES 7 YEARS -11+ OR 13 YEARS) Preparatory or prep schools, have a full range of subjects leading to admission to senior schools at 11+ or through the 13+ Common Entrance Examination. As their name implies, the preparatory schools are focused primarily on preparing boys and girls for their senior education, and the important public exams that come with it.

74 FEBRUARY/MARCH 2017

Free of the National Curriculum, prep schools can differentiate their curricula according to what they think best prepares children for their later education. Most prep school children will be learning a foreign language from the very first year, and don’t be surprised to see subjects like Latin, Philosophy and Physics in the classroom, with cricket, rugby and tennis all on offer during games. As children reach the end of their time at prep school, most will look to the Common Entrance Exam as their gateway into the senior schools. It is during this transition process that senior schools are also looking for talented pupils for scholarships and other awards, so the very able students may be asked to attend further examinations/recitals/ matches &c, depending on where their particular strengths lie. In the state system, children are tested by the Government SATs, however many schools in the independent sector will have their own internal methods of measuring the performance of the children. There are around 499 prep schools in the Independent Association of Prep Schools, one of our constituent Head’s Associations, collectively educating over 134,000 children.

SENIOR SCHOOLS (AGES 11 YEARS -18 YEARS) Most of the pupils in independent education are in senior school, educating over 350,000 senior school students in almost eight hundred schools. Independent Senior Schools offer approaches to education, subjects, facilities and sports unparalleled in the state sector – students can study History of Art, Government, Russian and Japanese, and try their hands at Astronomy, Ceramics or Equestrianism. They could be on their school judo or sailing team, and take trips all over the world. Whatever your child’s particular strengths, passions and interests, there is almost certainly a school which can offer the chance to try all of them.

How to Create a Child Genius London parents are upping their game in pursuit of the perfect report card. From philosophy programmes to bilingual nurseries, we offer a guide for modern tiger parents.

SCHMOOZE OR LOSE As every London parent knows, your child is an extension of your personality: your little ambassador in the world. It’s not enough to hope that your children will be happy and well-adjusted. You need them to be happy, well-adjusted and much cleverer than the other children you know. That magical phrase ‘gifted and talented’ on the report card is so much classier than turning up at the school gates in Armani jeans and an Audi Q6. All this may look like middle-class one-upmanship masquerading as parental love, but let’s be honest: there is no greater love. We’re alchemising our own insecurities into the parenting rocket fuel that means our children will never have to suffer such insecurities themselves. Want to build a child genius? Then swot up on this...

Katie Hopkins left the nation aghast after declaring she wouldn’t let her children associate with kids named Charmaine, Chardonnay or Tyler. Nevertheless, ambitious parents do vet their kids’ pals. Perfect manners and a reading age of 15? Good playmate. Chews exercise books and likes setting things on fire? Discouraged. Hence Maggie & Rose, the UK’s first private members’ clubs for kids, with two branches in West London. Members can enjoy endless soft play, cookery classes, dance classes — and excellent social opportunities.

OK COMPUTER The modern parent hip to Steven Johnson’s Everything Bad is Good for You, knows that not all video games don’t rot the brain: they give it an IQraising cognitive workout. Look at the brilliant way digital publishers such as Nosy Crow incorporate problem-solving into storytelling, while apps such as Reading Raven are engaging ways to get children into the world of words.

TUNE IN Studies consistently prove that children who learn music show greater increases in IQ than those who don’t; research has shown that listening to Mozart produces a measurable increase in spatial reasoning. So seek out an instrument that will nourish your darling son or daughter’s mind and soul, and make your home intolerable during practice time.

DOUBLE UP Most London schools are attended by children who speak many languages. Naïve parents might think this is a good way for their child to pick up a few foreign words. Wrong. Instead, you want to aim for a nursery where they speak two languages deliberately, rather than lots by accident. French never hurts, and there’s a good number of French bilingual nurseries in London. To be extra chic, brave the waiting list for a place at the Azbuka Foundation’s Russian nursery in Richmond.

THINK OR SINK What could be more important than a five-year-old getting special help dealing with the things that are most fundamental to the history of Western thought. Most tots are struggling with whether ‘i’ comes before ‘e’. Get yours worrying instead about whether existence comes before essence. The P4C Co-operative (philosophy for children) — a 78 FEBRUARY/MARCH 2017

worldwide educational movement launched in 1972 by the American professor Matthew Lipman — offers, for a modest subscription (£35), a range of philosophy-teaching online resources for kids.

ACT UP Drama lessons are very important for building confidence, imaginative play, empathy and those healthy feelings of hating six-year-old Amelia because she beat you to Cordelia in the school production of King Lear, so you ended up having to play Goneril. It’s tough out there: best get them used to it early. The media yummy mummies of Crouch End swear by Perform and its high-energy productions: each term builds to a full ensemble performance, backed by bespoke apps and a swishy online costume shop.

LEARN THROUGH PLAY There’s oodles of research supporting it. Chess, of course, teaches basic game theory and pattern recognition. And Scrabble offers vocabulary and simple maths. But bridge, as well as being an opportunity for parents and children to bond, encourages complicated strategic thought, memory and communication skills. Andrew Robson’s bridge club in Fulham does children’s lessons.

TEST TASTES As they say in computer science: garbage in, garbage out. It’s all very well making sure that your children eat well at home, but what about when they’re with other children? Unless your child is properly trained, they could easily be tempted to accept Haribo Tangfastics, Dairylea Triangles or worse. So educate your progeny early to question the provenance of food — a friend’s child, for instance, politely declines supermarket sausages and expresses a preference for Parmesan over cheddar.

HOMEWORK IT Everyone knows that the key to learning is partnership. It’s no use leaving your little darling to struggle through writing a poem or drawing a dinosaur without guidance — especially when he/ she thinks Triceratops and Trilobites lived at the same time and were both pink, or that one sentence in two merits an exclamation mark. Here’s the chance for your child to watch — little brain soaking it all in like a sponge — as you build a diorama of a PreCambrian habitat or correct that dear little sonnet from Shakespearean to Petrarchan.

KEEP YOUR KIDS SAFE ONLINE C “There are plenty of services and software that promise to keep your child safe online. None of them are substitutes for good parental supervision and knowledge”

80 FEBRUARY/MARCH 2017

hildren of all ages love using the computer, learning to navigate the internet from their earliest days through exposure at home and school. It is of paramount importance to put safety rules and measures into place before allowing your child independent access to the worldwide web. According to Andrew Rogoyski, Vice President of Cyber Security Services at CGI UK, the main online dangers parents need to be aware of are people masquerading as children and forming inappropriate and hidden relationships with a child, as well as criminals acting to defraud, run scams, or clone an individual’s identity. He also warns of unscrupulous companies getting children to sign up to paid services and urges parents to explain to their kids about inadvertently exposing private and sensitive information to the public. Technology that suddenly goes on the fritz is also something to watch out for - if your computer starts to slow down, that can be a sign there is malware on the system, which can wreak all kinds of destruction, from erasing all of your files to capturing online banking details. “There are plenty of services and software that promise to keep your child safe online. None of them are substitutes for good parental supervision and knowledge,” Rogoyski says. Before allowing your child online, establish some ground rules: “When and how long they have ‘screentime,’ what applications they can use, what you, as parents, expect to have access to and what punishments will be imposed if problems occur. Such rules can be difficult to impose on mobile phones so think about how your child is going to use mobiles.” It’s key for parents to understand how their children are using technology and social media. Stay safe by enforcing privacy settings on social media and making sure your child is only interacting with people they know. Rogoyski recommends that parents check websites like www.cyberstreetwise.com and

www.getsafeonline.org to get tech-savvy and learn about installing security software and strong passwords to prevent hackers. They offer detailed information on topics from online gaming to preventing identity theft so parents can assess risks and take precautionary measures. It’s important to explain the risks of being online to children. Parents should educate children about filling in personal information (required for competitions, etc), responding to pop-ups, being aware about the photos and messages they post and the dangers of meeting strangers online. Most social media websites (Facebook, Instagram, etc.) have a minimum age of 13, while WhatsApp requires users to be 16 and Vine has a minimum age requirement of 17. These minimum age requirements can be breached, which is why parents need to be vigilant in monitoring their children’s internet use. Minormonitor.com helps parents track their children’s Facebook and Twitter accounts, allowing them to stay ahead of any potential issues involving bullying, drugs and sexual references. Apps can also give parents power over their children’s digital lives. K9 Web Protection Browser is an internet filter and parental control software which blocks websites in over 70 categories and Net Nanny is another customisable filter that lets you block porn, profanity and other undesirable content. Mobicip is a popular choice to ensure your children are only exposed to age-appropriate content. Think of it like a Safari that bans restricted content and puts a time limit on internet usage. A fun way to teach kids about online dangers and safety precautions is with The Cynja, a book series about a cyberspace superhero fighting digital baddies.”Encourage positive use of these technologies,” says Rogoyski. “If you can get your child interested in areas like programming, digital art, game design, music production, film making and writing, to name but a few areas where technology excels, then the darker side of the internet will be much less of an issue.”

IS YOUR CHILD BEING BULLIED? A

third of children reported being bullied in the last 12 months, and half of them don’t tell anyone about it. But a new survey that took place during Anti-Bulling Week in November, reveals more than a quarter of young people bullied in school say it impacts their mental health, and that they experience anxiety, depression, self-harm and suicidal thoughts,. The Anti-Bullying Alliance is urging young people, parents and teachers to Make a Noise About Bullying. Lauren Seager-Smith, national coordinator for the Anti-Bullying Alliance, says: “What has come across really strongly from both young people and adults is that young people need support to talk about bullying. About half of young people don’t report bullying to anyone when it’s happening, which is a really serious issue.”

MAKE A NOISE The key aims of The Anti-Bullying Alliance are: • To empower children to make a noise about bullying, whether it’s happening to them or to someone else, face-to-face or online. • To help parents have conversations with their children about bullying, both as a way of 82 FEBRUARY/MARCH 2017

preventing it, and to help children who are worried. • To encourage ‘talking schools’ where all children are given a safe space to discuss bullying and other issues, and are supported to report all forms of bullying. • To equip teachers to respond effectively when children tell them they’re being bullied. • To raise awareness of the impact of bullying on children’s lives if they don’t tell anyone it’s happening, with a focus on the impact on mental health.

SUPPORT “We can’t just have young people speaking out without teachers responding appropriately, and parents being supported around the conversations with their children about bullying and what they should do,” says Seager-Smith. “Children are often

“More than a quarter of young people bullied in school say it impacts their mental health”

quite worried about telling their parents, because of how they’re going to respond. If we don’t support children to speak out, schools aren’t responding appropriately, and parents aren’t supported to speak out about these issues, then children don’t tell anyone about bullying and there can be a really serious impact on mental health.” While more than 16,000 children are absent from school at any one time because of bullying, over half of 6-15-year-olds don’t know how to get help if they’re being bullied. This is compounded by the fact the Anti-Bullying Alliance survey found that teachers and GPs feel ill-equipped to support children with mental health issues related to bullying. Bullying is strongly linked to eating disorders, self-harm and suicide, and being a bullying victim increases the risk of being depressed later in life by more than half. And it’s not just the victims who feel the weight of bullying, as the bullies themselves are 30% more likely to become depressed as adults.

“Bullying is strongly linked to eating disorders, self-harm and suicide” RESTORATIVE Seager-Smith says that, in the past, there’s been a tendency to provide more services for victims of bullying than interventions with children who bully. But now restorative approaches, where bullies meet

TOP TIPS FOR PARENTS If your child is being bullied, don’t panic. Explain that the bullying isn’t their fault and together you’ll sort it out.

Bullying should always be taken seriously, and it’s never your child’s fault if they’ve been bullied.

Try and establish the facts. It can be helpful to keep a diary of events, and if the bullying is online, save or copy images and text.

Find out what your child wants to happen. Help to identify steps you can take; and the skills they have to help sort out the situation. Make sure you always keep them informed about any actions you decide to take.

You may be tempted to tell your child to retaliate, but this can have unpredictable results.Your child might get into trouble or get even more hurt. Instead, role play non-violent ways they can respond to the bullies. Show them how to block or unfriend people if the bullying is online and help them identify other friends or adults that can support them.

“If a child bullies at school and is then excluded, they’re being punished but not learning about the impact of their behaviour” their victims in a controlled environment and the devastating impact of their actions is much more evident, are being used very effectively. “Restorative approaches work,” says Seager-Smith. “If a child bullies at school and is then excluded, they’re being punished but not learning about the impact of their behaviour, what needs to change and why.The benefit of a restorative approach is that the child understands the damage that’s been caused and what needs to change, which is also much more helpful for the person on the receiving end of the bullying.” Overall, Seager-Smith stresses that children need to understand that it’s vital to speak out about bullying, whether it’s happening to them, or they’ve seen someone else being bullied. “It’s about breaking the taboo about bullying - there’s still a sense that if you tell, you’re a grass. Make a Noise is trying to break that, saying that if bullying’s going on, you’re not a grass - bullying is so serious that you could be saving someone’s life. “You shouldn’t stay quiet about it, but breaking the culture of not telling is a challenge.” For more information about Anti-Bullying Week, visit www.anti-bullyingalliance.org.uk

Encourage your child to get involved in activities that build their confidence and esteem, and help them to form friendships outside school (or wherever the bullying is taking place). FEBRUARY/MARCH 2017 83

HELPING CHILDREN COPE WITH BEREAVEMENT O

ne of life’s sad certainties is that we will all experience the loss of a loved one, but most parents struggle to explain it to their children. For many children their first real experience of death will be when a pet passes on. Many parents make the mistake of hiding the facts of death by pretending the cat has got lost or “the cat has gone to sleep”, but you’ll be doing your child a disservice. The death of a pet serves as an opening to talk about death in a clear way, thus preparing your child for dealing with the heightened emotions that will arise.

“Don’t feel you have to have a formal, sit-down talk with your child to explain the facts” Children are also extremely susceptible to imaginative concepts surrounding death, and believe that, like in the world of super heroes, people can die and magically come back to life, as in the fairy tale Sleeping Beauty. It’s important that your child understands the difference between fantasy and the real world. Don’t feel you have to have a formal, sit-down talk with your child to explain the facts. Rather introduce death into the conversation only when it’s appropriate, and make it clear to your child that death is a part of life. Of course the hardest loss to prepare for is that of a parent or sibling. Be prepared for questions and always take the time to sit down and answer them, in an honest and age-appropriate manner. One of the saddest worries a child may express is that they are somehow responsible - “Is Daddy going to die

because I’ve been naughty?” – so you must assure them this is not the case. One of the most positive things you can do to help your child is reminding them of all those wonderful shared experiences they have enjoyed and no one can take away those precious moments. You may like to create memory boxes filled with special things, photos and letters. – your child will be able to return to their box for comfort when they feel sad. All of these ‘physical’ items will help your child to connect with their loved one in the days, weeks and years after their death. Children express their grief in many ways, one minute they seem upset, the next they are fine. This can be quite distressing for a parent. Children often become angry - they are cross that a loved one has ‘abandoned’ them that they have done something bad to cause this. It’s important to let your child know that their anger is normal and that the person who has died would have stayed alive if they could. Children will experience the same grieving process as an adult, but they will express their feelings in a different way. There may be physical manifestations such as wetting the bed, and difficulty coping with everyday life, such as going to school. However your child’s grief manifests itself, it’s vitally important to acknowledge their feelings in a sensitive manner; let them talk when they want to talk, be quiet when they want to be quiet, play and laugh when they feel ready to do so. Just being there, ready to listen and support your child is vital. Your GP can help with any physical or mental manifestations of grief your child may be experiencing. They can also put you in touch with counselling services and child psychologists if you feel your child requires additional support to come to terms with their loss.

There are also several charities dedicated to helping children cope with bereavement, including the following:

WINSTON’S WISH Winston’s Wish is the leading childhood bereavement charity in the UK. Offering practical support and guidance for parents and their children, its services include a national helpline which each year supports around 3,500 families across the country. THE CHILD BEREAVEMENT CHARITY Child Bereavement UK is the UK’s leading charity that supports families, both when a child dies and when a child is bereaved. Every year the charity trains around 5,000 professionals across health care, social care, education, the emergency services and the voluntary sector. It also provides a support and information service and an interactive website with online forums. For more information visit www. childbereavementuk.org 84 FEBRUARY/MARCH 2017

A FOOD FOUNDATION A

s parents, we all want to give our children the best start in life. Developing healthy eating habits early on not only influences day to day mood, energy levels and general health, but it also shapes future palates. So it’s good news all round for you and your little ones! Too much sugar can dull children’s taste buds making them crave sweet treats more throughout later life. With current concerns about sugar and a web of tips and pieces of advice it is easy to lose sight of core food values. At Yeo Valley we want to celebrate simple, delicious organic ingredients. Our Little Yeos Fromage Frais range are little pots of mild, creamy, natural goodness. Perfect for weaning, they come in a 6 pot snap pack that you can keep in the fridge for any occasion. Pale but interesting, these fromage frais do not contain artificial sweeteners, colours or preservatives. Organic milk from British Family Farms is instead mixed with fruit puree and a drop of organic grape juice to stir up the dream snack for little ones. Our range also includes a plain natural yogurt – just the job for adding your own fruit or using as a dip with carrot sticks. Think outside the pot and mix into pureed fruit such as peach or pear, add a dollop to steamed veg or on to baby cereal for an ideal weaning meal. Enjoy one spoonful at a time, starting your children on a taste adventure with real goodness from real ingredients! Take a look at our recipes and fun stuff for kids at: www.yeovalley.co.uk/kids
