Pilates with bump & baby
W
hen people hear the word Pilates, they often think of it as a celebrity fad or a superficial form of exercise reserved for super fit women drinking fruit smoothies and wearing Lycra. But the truth is Pilates isn’t for show. Pilates is specifically designed to strengthen the muscles you can’t see- the core muscles. Acting like a supportive corset, these muscles control your bladder, bowel, improve posture and maintain lower back strength. The son of a prize-winning gymnast, Greek-German born Joseph Pilates was a Physical-culturist who developed a series of exercises in the early 20th century that were designed to help improve body alignment and accelerate the process of stretching, strengthening and rehabilitation. “Patients are often surprised when they come to see me as a Physio and I recommend they come back to see me for Pilates” says Physiotherapist and professional Pilates Instructor, Sarah Gledstone. Sarah, who owns ‘Physio&Co.’ and runs a series of specialist Pre/Post Natal and Rehabilitative classes, has been teaching and recommending Pilates to her patients for over 10 years. “The results aren’t always instant, and some of the techniques require practice and patience – but the results are undeniable.” They also appear to be universal – benefiting people of all ages and abilities. Whilst it seems that most of Sarah’s patients are women, she is noticing that more and more men are becoming interested. “This may be due to the rise in popularity of Pilates in professional sport” speculates Sarah, referring to the Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs - who credits the longevity of his career to regular Pilates sessions. “Once my husband heard that footballers were doing it, he suddenly became much keener on doing some exercises with me.” Sarah adds. But it’s those who are less agile and who are suffering from lower back pain that Sarah prefers to focus on. “Some people are understandably nervous about aggravating or worsening their condition. But my classes are specifically tailored to 8 J U LY 2 0 1 5
help ease patients into a gentle exercise routine and, more importantly, they are designed to strengthen the body - which can help reduce the pain caused through injury and pregnancy.” Sarah treats a lot of new mums, in fact she has even developed one particular class that uses one very special piece of equipment to them regain their strength – their own babies! “I’m a new mum myself, so I totally understand how hard it is to get to classes and find childcare. So I combined the two and started tailoring different pelvic floor exercises to involve lifting and holding my son, and he loves it.” Having given birth in September, Sarah knows all too well the stresses that having a baby puts on the body and credits her own recovery not only to what she has done since giving birth, but also to all the work that she put in before her son was born. “People don’t realise that Pilates is preventative as well rehabilitative. It’s such a safe and effective way to exercise during your pregnancy as it helps maintain strength in your lower back, abdominals and pelvic floor muscles – all of which are imperative to aid the huge changes that occur in your body.” Having tried one of Sarah’s sessions I can confirm that it is also rather relaxing, but it’s not, despite popular belief, a form of yoga. “Both disciplines focus on developing strength, balance and a good breathing technique” says Sarah, who has also practiced yoga, “But Pilates doesn’t have the spiritual emphasis that yoga does.” So it seems whether you are a young athlete, new mum, low back pain sufferer or just someone who enjoys low impact exercise and relaxation, Pilates may be just the thing for you. Your pregnancy
Wbyeek Week 0-8 weeks 0-8 WEEKS PREGNANT
Three weeks after the first day of your last period, your fertilised egg moves along the fallopian tube towards the womb. By week 7 your baby’s brain starts to develop into three distinct structures. Week eight means the embryo is now a fully-fledged foetus, -and about one inch long, other body parts are beginning: Hands and feet are forming tiny webbed fingers and toes. And the tail your little one has been sporting starts to disappear. This is a critical period for arm and leg development. The legs have lengthened, and the buds that will eventually become the toes have started to sprout. Meanwhile, the arms have gotten longer and have begun to bend at the elbow.
9-12 weeks 9, 10, 11, 12 WEEKS PREGNANT
Celebrate this milestone by singing aloud to your bump! Week 10 means your little one is developing ears - so take advantage of the time you have together! Week 11 and your little one’s heart has been beating furiously for weeks, but it’s only just become loud enough for your health care provider to hear with a special listening device. Week 12, your baby weighs 0.3 to 0.5 ounce and measures around 2.5 inches the eyelids have formed and will close.
13-16 weeks
13, 14, 15, 16 WEEKS PREGNANT
At 13 weeks your little one is now about the size of a large plum, weighing less than one ounce and measuring anywhere 1 0 J U LY 2 0 1 5
from 2.5 - 4 inches. The head takes up half of that length, thanks to brain development. At 14 weeks, the baby is about 85mm long from head to bottom. Although you might not be able to see it, your little one is beginning to move his mouth and face. Week 15 is about your little one setting up the stage for a head of hair and maybe even some thumb sucking! Week 16 sees your little one moving her arms and legs more and strengthening muscles she’ll need to straighten herself out as time progresses. Don’t be surprised if you feel some wiggling!
17-20 weeks 17, 18, 19, 20 WEEKS PREGNANT
At 17 weeks, your little one starts to plump up a bit. The fat that’s acquired. helps produce and retain body heat. This is a time of tremendous growth: your foetus might measure up to 6.8 inches and weigh nearly five ounces. By week 18, your little one is most likely exploring your belly, and you might feel her move. Week 19 and get ready for a growth spurt! Aside from having developed genitals, your little one is rearing up for the second half of your pregnancy. Congratulations! Week 20 is the half-way mark! Inside your baby’s head, he is truly starting to experience the world around him - limited though it may be.
21-24 weeks 21, 22, 23, 24 WEEKS PREGNANT
As your baby continues to grow, you’ll start to observe signs of the life growing inside your tummy. Week 21 is about sleep and heartbeats. Your little one’s most likely getting more active with each day! In week 22, your little one’s most likely getting more active with each passing day. Your baby will spend this week exercising her body as well as putting on extra weight to help store energy. Week 23 is about using words and song to get her new ears familiarised with the sound of your voice. Week 24 is about feeling your baby inside your belly while making sure that everything’s in order with the rest of your body.
25-28 weeks
25, 26, 27, 28 WEEKS PREGNANT
Your baby’s brain is starting to wire itself up to allow her to feel and experience things during week 25. Week 26 sees the beginning of your little one refining some key reflexes and strengthening her muscles. Week 27 and your little one’s eyes open! She can recognise lights and shadows while you’re having vivid dreams when you snooze. By week 28, your baby’s beginning to respond to sounds - including the growling of your stomach if you’re hungry! 29, 30, 31, 32 WEEKS PREGNANT Week 29, marks an important milestone in your baby’s
brain development: The brain has matured to the point where it can help regulate body temperature, although not ready to do it all on her own yet, she still needs the warmth of your body to keep her toasty until birth. At 30 weeks, you enter the final ten weeks of your pregnancy, your baby weighs about three pounds and is a little more than 10.8 inches. Week 31 might very well be the beginning of your body going into its final preparations for the big day. At about 32 weeks the baby is usually lying with its head pointing downwards, ready for birth. Use this time to get everything in order, including packing a bag ready.
33-36 weeks 33, 34, 35, 36 WEEKS PREGNANT
Week 33 sees your little one refining all five senses. As her brain grows, her head does as well. Your little one now measures 16.5 inches and weighs more than four pounds. Week 34 is a good time for a refresher on your birth plan - only a month and a half to go! By Week 35, your baby’s arms and legs are getting chubbier as she continues to gain weight. This is it! The beginning of week 36 officially signifies the last “month” of pregnancy.
37-40 weeks 37, 38, 39, 40 WEEKS PREGNANT
Week 37 is all about making the final preparations for the birth. It’s likely that your baby is more than 19 inches long and weighs between 6 and 6.5 pounds, and nearing her final birth weight. Take week 38 as a time to mentally prepare yourself for the great introduction to motherhood that awaits you! Your baby is now considered to be full-term, even though your official due date is still two weeks away. 85% of babies are born within two weeks of their due date, so you’ll probably give birth sometime in the next four weeks! It’s 39 weeks, and your baby is preparing for her grand entrance! J U LY 2 0 1 5 1 1

The topsy-turvy world of twins We explain why the complexities of a twosome is so intriguing...
W
hether you believe they have mysterious powers, or the notion that they are double trouble, twins never fail to provoke intrigue. It’s thought the increased availability of fertility treatment has seen multiple births soar by a third in a decade to 11,500 a year, the highest level since records began in 1940. As a rule, around a third of twins are identical, with the remaining non-identical births evenly split between samesex pairs and mixed. But despite them becoming more commonplace, why is our culture so fascinated with the complexities of being a twosome? It’s easy to think having two babies to look after simply means a double dose of everything from washing and nappies to coos from smitten passers-by, but raising twins is more than a straightforward numbers game. It can present some unique challenges. There’s a lot of pressure put on parents by the ‘identity police’ not to make twins appear ‘one’ by dressing them alike or making them partake in the same interests. Studies have shown that, from the age of seven, twins actively encourage each other’s differences, helping to develop their own individual identities. So putting them in matching outfits will do no harm. Teach your child about the wonders of being a twin with the heartwarming tale of a fairy named Tinkerbell who discovers she has a twin sister called Periwinkle. Addressing the role of twin sisters, but with lots of fun and action along the way, treat your twosome to Disney’s ‘TinkerBell and the Secret of the Wings TOP TIPS FOR LOOKING AFTER TWINS Having two lively babies on your hands can pose lots of challenges. So how can you tackle life with twins? Here are some handy hints to help you on your way: Follow a routine - Organisation becomes all the more important when you are dealing with two. Twins thrive on it and their life is all very much togetherness in those early years. 1 2 J U LY 2 0 1 5
Join a twins club - Feeling over-awed? Signing up to a twins club is your pass to a group of fellow sympathetic parents who know what’s like and can offer support and advice. Watch out for Twin Escalation Syndrome - There’s nothing like having a grinning companion to egg you on in your misdemeanours. One twin starts chucking their pasta, the other joins in. And the next thing you know it’s Little Italy all over the floor. Psychologists have dubbed this conspiratorial mischief-making Twin Escalation Syndrome, or TES. The solution? If the tested tricks of distracting and ignoring don’t work, you may have to separate your twins for a short time. Give individual attention - From their genetic make-up to their environment, twins share lots of similarities and so it’s unsurprising that they may have similar thoughts. However, it’s important to allow them room to develop their own individual personalities. Spending regular time on their own with either you or your partner will give them space to grow and find their own identity. Discipline the perpetrator and not the by-stander - If one twin is misbehaving and the other is not, it’s important that the other child doesn’t feel like they’re in trouble, too. If one twin is having time-out, the other twin can easily empathise with their sibling and feel upset. Ensure that this twin gets lots of positive attention from you. Carve out some me-time - Whether it’s treating yourself to a bath or just curling up with a good book while your partner takes the children out for a walk, it’s important you make time to relax. After all, recharging your own batteries means you’ll have the energy you need to for tomorrow. It may sound obvious, but creating time to spend alone with your partner is important, too, allowing you the opportunity to communicate and to simply enjoy being in each other’s company. Put a date in the diary to book a babysitter over for the evening.

lockPress is the venture of Kelly Penstone-Smith. The mum of two was keen to find a new focus, outside of practising as a solicitor, which would allow her to work around her young family. Kelly recognised a need for unique designs in both homeware and baby wear and set about establishing a business which produces individual pieces. BlockPress offers a range of textiles and stationery, hand printed by Kelly. Each design concept is sketched, cut, carved and then printed by hand with custom mixed paints. BlockPress’ range includes baby gifts such as bodysuits and muslin, children’s aprons, tea towels, canvas bags and greeting cards. The majority of BlockPress’ textiles and stationery can also be personalised. Their ethos is to enable each customer visiting www.BlockPress.co.uk to come away with a product which is tailored to their style or that of the intended recipient. For example, their blue ‘Super-Star” apron, could be purchased as a present for Harry’s 3rd birthday. The customer can request for the apron to be personalised by opting for green paint and for Harry’s name to be handprinted on the item. Furthermore, a matching greeting card with the number 3 printed in green stars, preceded by the personalisation ‘Harry is...’ can be purchased to complete the tailored gift. BlockPress’ personalised aprons have proven popular as gifts for siblings, given that they are available in toddler and child sizes and can be personalised to be different yet still matching. The baby gift sets designed by BlockPress have been created to make the gifting experience quick and hassle free.

The safe way for babies to sleep Prepare your baby for a good night’s rest by wrapping him up in his very own cosy sleeping bag It is normal for babies to wake during the night, particularly in the first few months of life. However, research has shown that babies often wake because they wriggle about, kicking off, tangling in, or even slipping down under conventional blankets and duvets. As a result, babies can easily become too hot or too cold, and it is this discomfort that leads to distress and the inevitable crying. By replacing blankets and duvets with a Slumbersac baby sleeping bag, you can keep your baby at a safe and comfortable temperature throughout the night. Because your baby will be warm and snug in her Slumbersac, she will be less likely to wake in the night and more likely to go back to sleep if she does. When used as part of the bedtime routine, a sleeping bag is great for helping your baby to settle. After an evening bath, put your baby into his sleeping bag for a cuddle, and you’ll find it simpler and far less stressful when you put him into his cot. Night-time nappy changes are also easy because Slumbersac sleep sacks have an all-round zip.
Sleeping bags with feet! Slumbersac’s newest sleeping bag is specially designed for toddlers and young children. This clever design has holes at the bottom that children can put their feet through when they want to walk around, and then pull them back into the sleep sack when they go to bed to stay cosy and warm! As well as being super practical, these bags are also safe as they can help to prevent little ones tripping up, especially when they are learning to get about on their own for the first time! Personalised comfort Baby sleeping bags come in a wide range of sizes and togs. The tog size determines the thickness of the sleeping bag and therefore how warm it keeps your child. Whether it’s summer or winter, Slumbersac offers sleeping bags for every season, and a wide choice of designs featuring beautiful embroidery, appliqués and prints to suit boys and girls, and to coordinate with your baby’s nursery. All sleeping bags are made from – and lined with – 100% cotton. Padded with quick-dry, soft polyester fleece, Slumbersac baby sleeping bags are easily machinewashed and tumble-dried, and they make the ideal gift for babies and toddlers because they are both practical and attractive! And by choosing Slumbersac’s name embroidery option, you can also personalize your gift. THE DETAILS

lthough all babies cry sometimes, there are times when crying may be a sign of illness. Listen for sudden changes in the pattern or sound of your baby’s crying. Of-ten, there’ll be a simple explanation. For example, if you’ve been going out more than usual your baby might be overtired. If they seem to have other symptoms, such as a high temperature, they may have an illness. Your baby may have something minor, such as a cold, or something treatable. If this is the case, contact your GP or health visitor. Get medical attention as soon as you can if your baby: has a weak, high-pitched continuous cry seems floppy when you pick them up passes much less urine than usual vomits green fluid

THE BEST DRESSED GUEST The summer social season is in full swing. Here’s how to survive any soiree in style when expecting
T
he defining elements of the perfect party look when expecting? Style and comfort. Balance your bump and show off bare legs with a short A-line shape. An eye-catching hue or statement print imparts fashion-forward edge. Pregnancy can make you feel warmer than usual at the best of times – choose a design in lightweight silk or cotton to help you keep your cool. CHOOSE SHOES THAT WILL GO THE DISTANCE It is wise to select your footwear knowing that you will potentially be spending hours standing. If the size of your clutch allows, take a pair of flat pumps so you can discreetly switch shoes if your heels become unbearable. HAVE A BACK-UP PLAN When it comes to food it is best to be prepared. We’re not saying to pack an entire lunchbox but ensure you have sufficient nibbles in your clutch. That way if you aren’t able to eat the canapés or meal served, you won’t go hungry without so much as a glass of champagne to compensate.
USE COMMON SENSE If you are nearing your due date or are going away for more than a day, make sure you bring your hospital notes. It may not sound glamorous but knowing where the facilities are is also important. As you know, expecting means far more frequent trips to the bathroom. KICK UP YOUR HEELS! Pregnancy is not a restriction to having fun. Even if alcohol is off limits you can always dance, plus you can take smug pleasure in not suffering from overindulgence the next day when everyone else is feeling worse for wear. Meningitis Meningitis is swelling of the Meninges; the protective membranes of the brain and spinal cord, the inflammation usually results from an infection.
M
eningitis vaccine is currently part of the routine immunisations but it doesn’t cover all available strains. Meningococcal Group B is the most common cause of Meningitis and this vaccine will be available on the NHS later this year (it is already available privately). Meningitis and Septicaemia can happen to anyone of any age, but babies and toddlers account for 50% of cases. 1761 average cases of Meningitis B in UK per year 10% of survivors will have a major disability including amputations, brain damage and hearing loss 33% of survivors will have minor deficits including psychological disorders & reduced IQ Meningitis is usually bacterial or viral although almost any microbe can cause it. Viral meningitis can be very unpleasant but is rarely life threatening and most people make a full recovery. Bacterial meningitis is more serious and often life changing or fatal. Meningitis and septicaemia (Sepsis) can be hard to recognise at first as early symptoms are similar to flu and other common illnesses. Key signs of meningitis to look out for in babies and children: Pale, mottled skin. Cold hands and feet Symptoms can appear in any order, but the first symptoms are usually: Fever - particularly with cold hands and feet, vomiting, headache and feeling generally unwell – these early symptoms are extremely difficult to recognise as they are similar to many other milder illnesses. They may have a headache and in small babies the soft spot of their head (fontanelle) could be raised. They may have vomiting and diarrhoea and difficulty breathing Floppy, lifeless and drowsy A rash may not appear at all - but if the person is unwell and you see a rash which does not disappear when pressure is applied to it (the tumbler test) - CALL AN AMBULANCE
Other meningitis symptoms specific to toddlers and babies: Refusing to eat/feed Irritable, not wanting to be held/touched A stiff body, with jerky movements, or floppy, unable to stand up A tense or bulging soft spot on the head (fontanelle) A high pitched or moaning MENINGITIS RASH AND THE TUMBLER TEST DO NOT WAIT FOR A RASH Most rashes disappear when you apply pressure to the skin. With meningitis, the rash is different and remains visible when a clear glass tumbler is pressed over the skin (the tumbler test). Do not wait for a rash as symptoms can appear in any order and some may not appear at all. It can be harder to see a rash on dark skin, check the soles of the feet, palms of hands, roof of mouth and inside eyelids. Meningitis can kill in 4 hours. WHEN TO CALL AN AMBULANCE If the casualty is getting worse and you are seriously concerned Call an ambulance if you see a rash begin to appear and you are still able to see it if you apply pressure with the side of a glass. If they are seriously unwell and have some of the above symptoms Call your GP - if you cannot get to talk to the doctor immediately - get the casualty to hospital or phone an ambulance If you are sent home from the hospital or GP Surgery and the child gets worse. create a
dream nursery DESIGNING YOUR BABY’S NURSERY IS ONE OF THE MOST EXCITING AND MEMORABLE PROJECTS A PARENT WILL DO, AND IS THE FIRST STEP TO WELCOMING YOUR BABY INTO YOUR FAMILY.
I
t is important that it is a space of beauty, tranquility but also of practicality. Your nursery has to be functional as well, so before purchasing furniture think about safety and function but also style, the purpose, and the activities that will take place in there. Besides the obvious sleeping and feeding, consider storage and your lifestyle too. Start by measuring your space as it gives you an informed platform to build on. You will find that nursery furniture comes in different shapes and sizes so you need to take a lot into consideration like alcoves and awkward spaces. YOUR TASTE To prevent being overwhelmed with the plethora of cot styles, look at your home to determine your personal taste. Are you a city slicker or country-loving? Do you love nature and prefer natural woods or even eco-friendly furniture? If the rest of your house is sleek and contemporary for example, there’s no reason you can’t carry the look into your baby’s room.
Babies need lots of stuff, but keeping surfaces free from clutter is key to a stylish nursery 2 4 J U LY 2 0 1 5
With careful thought, the colours, decorations and lighting can please young eyes and grown-up tastes alike. Be inspired by stylish designs and create a space both you and your little one can enjoy. Stay neutral - If the cot were removed from your nursery, would it still look like a nursery? That’s the ultimate test of creating a stylish room that goes with your home and grows with your child. Painted furniture gives you the flexibility to create a space that really coordinates with the rest of your décor. Keep it simple - Babies need lots of stuff, but keeping surfaces free from clutter is key to a stylish nursery. Good storage makes sure essentials are tucked out of the way, while wooden flooring allows you to wipe up spills easily. To keep the simple mood, avoid lots of pictures and go for one striking, graphic decal to create an interesting focal point for your baby. Make it personal - Add personality to your nursery by going beyond predictable character themes. Incorporate treasured family mementos, to create an individual look. Let there be light - Babies are known to have scant regard for the fact that night-time is really for sleeping, but you can train your little one early on (to
an extent…). So getting lighting right is essential – for both of you! You don’t want to blast your baby with 100w at 2am, so make sure you have soft lighting for night-time feeds. You will also need sufficient light by your feeding chair for reading. Don’t limit your choice to novelty designs: use the same type of floor and table lights you might choose for a living room or master bedroom. NURSERY FURNITURE The cot tends to carry the bulk of the design so choose that first. Most retailers sell nursery furniture as a collection. This means that you can purchase coordinating pieces like the changing unit, wardrobe, shelving etc. Some companies even supply single and double beds as part of the range so you only need to purchase one item later on and you’ll still have a coordinating bedroom. If space is limited consider purchasing dual purpose furniture, like changing units that have a removable changing top set atop a chest of drawers. This gives its use longevity and it carries on being used long after baby outgrows the nursery. The cot will be the most important purchase in your nursery. You can choose from ‘classic’ and ‘modern’, to ‘vintage’ and it will set the theme for the whole room. Your choices range from wood or iron, antique, traditional or modern to natural finish, painted or eco-friendly. A rocking chair gives you yet another opportunity to add a design touch to your nursery. Functionality should come first, with design being a priority as you want this purchase to be enjoyed by you and your little one for the years ahead. If the chair you love does not fit your design story, why not have some fun with upholstery to make it work for you? BABY BED LINEN Nursery bed linen again comes in many shapes, styles and sizes and the same principle applies that we use to choose furniture. Traditional
bed linen are quite easily identified, frills, checks, florals, etc. while contemporary baby bedding will be again rather fuss-free and simple. Think neutrals, geometric patterns and crisp predictable styles. For a true luxe design, go for bespoke bedding - this is where you or your designer can select suitable fabrics in your chosen theme or colour. WALL COLOURS Notice we haven’t talked about wall colours yet. This is because it is easier to match paint to bedding than the other way round. It is safer to choose your bed linen first because you wouldn’t choose one in a colour you don’t love. Once this is safely done, pick a colour from the bed linen. Go for a soft colour as you’re creating a serene space that you’ll be walking into at 2am in the morning! Plus of course your baby needs a relaxing space. If your favourite colour is a deep colour and your space is small, tone it down to a softer shade in the same colour palette. Bold colours pull the walls in and make a small space feel smaller. The reverse is also true; lighter colours make the walls recede. FINISHING TOUCHES Now that the mainframe of your nursery is formed, add the finishing touches to your design. Decorative accessories like a rug, artwork, clocks, etc all place a stamp on your baby’s space. A mobile hung above the cot are perfect to engage and calm a baby. Take time to select one that communicates your design message, pleasing you as much as your baby! J U LY 2 0 1 5 2 5

Armani Baby Boy (3-24 months) Armani Junior Boy (2-8 years, 8-16 years) WINTER CAMPUS The ‘Winter Campus’ theme reinterprets the classic yet sporty charm of college uniforms with a contemporary twist. Funny, glossy prints and graphic patterns add a touch of irony to a classic colour palette, decorating a fresh and contemporary choice of fabrics: check-print nylon for pea coats, textured piqué for shirts, a blend of nylon and fleece and “teddy-bear” faux-fur for outerwear
and check woollen cloth for reversible duffle coats. Looks are completed with classic campus-style accessories, including logoed wool hats and baseball caps. The range of colours includes grey tones - from heather grey to dark anthracite - royal blue, and bright colours such as sunglow yellow and lawn green. The line features high-impact, colour-block down jackets with micro-injection padding, and stone-washed jeans enriched by street-style-worthy ripped and creased accents. Strong and vibrant, rubberised, laminated and glossy prints wink knowingly at the world of social networks: intertwined with Armani’s institutional logo, the hashtag becomes a symbol. FREE SPIRIT The urban-inspired ‘Free Spirit’ theme chooses warm shades such as chocolate brown, terra cotta, ink blue and army green with hints of antique blue, and comes with stylish outerwear such as cut-and-sew camouflage jackets and leather and cloth coated nylon garments. The latest innovations include winter polo shirts, made with a mixture of piqué and knitwear, and t-shirts featuring graphic prints with an urban edge. DANDY COUTURE Designed for special occasions or for everyday wear, the ‘Dandy Couture’ theme fully embodies Armani’s signature sophistication and timeless elegance. Navy blue blends with pearl grey, charcoal grey with optical white, while a tiny, logo pattern embellishes shirts and details under the collar or the inner lining of jackets, waistbands and pockets to create gracefully refined garments. Fabrics like classic lightweight wool, innovative Prince of Wales fustian, fil-à-fil and stretch poplin provide maximum comfort, even when wearing dress suits.

SCIENCE MUSEUM This is one of the best museums to take your toddler to as there are two areas that are specifically toddler focused as well as other parts of the museum that are really fun for toddlers to see. Toddler focused area include the Pattern Pod and The Garden. The Pattern Pod offers a wonderful experience for small children. The exhibit is officially designated as being for 5 – 8 year olds, but there are many interesting, hands-on things for your toddler to investigate. Dress up clothes for children to try on and play around in. There are tiles that children can insert into a special display that projects different patterns on the ceiling, pattern puzzles and a pattern making art programme plus much more. The Garden is a real treat to take your children to, its wellhidden in the basement. The first thing you notice when you walk in are small children wearing orange protective aprons playing in the most elaborate water table you have ever seen. Filled with small boats that float down a cascading canal, children are able to work different levers and pumps to direct the water and boats. It is really great fun. Further along is a play area that suggests a building site,

Get outside with the kids for a summer garden party Let’s face it, kids’ parties can get a little chaotic, but they can be a lot easier to manage if they’re out in the garden as opposed to in the house.
W
hether it’s to celebrate a birthday, a special achievement or maybe just some school friends coming over to enjoy the holidays – if you’re thinking of hosting a garden party this summer, take a look at our checklist to ensure you’ve got everything covered! WHERE TO START? It can be a little daunting knowing where to begin on the party planning so to give you a sense of direction start by deciding on a theme for the occasion. For a girly gathering perhaps consider a ‘glamping’ party for a fun twist to camping with plenty of cushions, girly sleeping bags and some beauty treats for everyone to get involved with. Or for a fun family day how about creating your very own summer fete complete with different ‘stalls’ around the garden. Get the kids making some handmade banners and welcome signs, set up games like ‘guess the number of sweets in the jar’, giant chess and perhaps even hire a bouncy castle or candy floss machine for the day! Or for something really easy and summery, try a Hawaiian or pirate themed party and simply make it fancy dress with some fun decorations. Tip: Get the kids involved when thinking about party themes. They’ll love it. And when you send out the party invites make sure it’s nice and clear so everyone knows what’s planned and anything they should wear/bring. GETTING YOUR TIMINGS RIGHT 10 weeks – If you’re planning on hiring an entertainer now is the time to do it, as they get booked up quickly! Depending on the party theme you choose, think about a magician, clown or a singing and dancing entertainment group that the kids will love! 6 weeks – Sit down with your children and create a guest list. Think about who has invited them to parties recently so that all their friends are there and no one is left out. Give an RSVP deadline, so you have time to plan catering and activities. 2 weeks – Start thinking about party decorations, whether 4 0 J U LY 2 0 1 5
you’re buying them in or you’re getting creative and making something homemade with the kids. 1 week – It’s time for the big party food shop. Get it done early and if there’s anything you can prep then it’s one less thing to worry about nearer the time! 2 days before – If it’s a birthday celebration then don’t forget to pick up the cake, and make a final trip to get any fresh food items. ON THE DAY On the day of the party the main thing you’ll need to focus on is the food and refreshments. A bonus of summer parties is that you can serve up some great simple, fresh food that can be easy to prepare. Whether you decide on a barbeque, finger buffet or a big pasta dish; serve them up with a fresh colourful salad and you’re bound to please both the kids and the adults at the party. If you’re feeling creative, you can even get your chosen theme woven in to the food presentation with little twists on tried and tested recipes whether it’s the plates they’re served on right through to shaped sandwiches and biscuits. THE AFTERMATH For the clean-up, make your life as easy as possible! Sort the rubbish from the recycling as you go along with a bin bag and a separate receptacle for both glass and plastic situated outside the house. That way it will stop people coming through the house quite so often. If you have a large number of guests, you may well find yourself running short on party plates, bowls or glasses but don’t spend your time at the sink. Just round up all the dirty dishes and stick them in the dishwasher with some Fairy All-in-One dishwasher tablets and put on a 30 minute cycle. The tablets work quickly so everything will be clean and ready to use in just half an hour. So all that’s left is to get outside, enjoy the sunshine and share the party fun with everyone

Can I travel abroad if I am pregnant?
With the proper precautions, and armed with information on when to travel, vaccination and travel insurance, most women can travel safely well into their pregnancy.
W
herever you go, find out what healthcare facilities are at your destination in case you require urgent medical attention. It’s a good idea to take your medical records with you so you can give doctors the relevant information if necessary. Make sure your travel insurance covers you for any eventuality, such as pregnancy-related medical care during labour, premature birth and the cost of changing the date of your return trip if you go into labour.
end of your pregnancy. Check with the airline for their policy on this. After week 28 of pregnancy, the airline may ask for a letter from your doctor or midwife confirming your due date, and that you aren’t at risk of complications. Long-distance travel (longer than five hours) carries a small risk of blood clots (deep vein thrombosis, or DVT). If you fly, drink plenty of water and move about regularly – every 30 minutes or so. You can buy a pair of support stockings in the pharmacy over the counter, which will reduce leg swelling.
WHEN TO TRAVEL IN PREGNANCY Some women prefer not to travel in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy because of nausea and feeling very tired during these early stages. The risk of miscarriage is also higher in the first three months, whether you’re travelling or not. Travelling in the final months of pregnancy can be tiring and uncomfortable. So, many women find the best time to travel or take a holiday is in mid-pregnancy, between four and six months. Travel during pregnancy is a concern for many women, but if your pregnancy has no complications then there’s no reason why you can’t travel safely, as long as you take the right precautions.
Below are some tips to help you have a healthy and comfortable flight: Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. Do calf exercises – most airlines provide information on these. Don’t sit still for a long time – walk around the aircraft when possible. Wear loose, comfortable clothing. Adjust your seatbelt so the strap lies below your bump. Take an aisle seat where possible. It’ll give you extra leg room and make it easy to take short strolls and bathroom breaks.
FLYING IN PREGNANCY If this is your first baby, now’s your chance to enjoy the luxury of uninterrupted time alone, with your partner or with friends. It’s also a last opportunity to make the most of travelling light. For the next few years, you’ll have to take a car seat, pushchair, nappies and toys with you wherever you go! Flying is not harmful to you or your baby, but discuss any health issues or pregnancy complications with your midwife or doctor before you fly. The likelihood of going into labour is naturally higher after 37 weeks (around 34 weeks if you’re carrying twins), and some airlines will not let you fly towards the 4 2 J U LY 2 0 1 5
TRAVEL VACCINATIONS WHEN YOU’RE PREGNANT Vaccines are not recommended because of concerns that the virus or bacteria in the jab could harm the baby in the womb. You are generally advised to avoid travelling to countries where immunisation is required. However, if you must travel to areas requiring inoculation, you should get your jabs. The risk of catching an infectious disease far outweighs the risk from vaccination. Some anti-malaria tablets aren’t safe to take in pregnancy so consult your GP for advice. If you’re travelling to Europe, make sure you have a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), which entitles you to free treatment while abroad.

Learning the SwimWay S wimWay is the leading home visit Swimming School in London. Since 2005, the company has developed a reputation for providing high quality swimming lessons for parents & babies, children and adults. Locations include exclusive private developments, homes, schools and gyms around London, as well as 9 sites open to general public. SwimWay ‘Steps to Success’ have been developed to incorporate a series of stages in their swimming lessons. These enable all the students to develop and practice key techniques and skills. This approach ensures that all students learn to swim in small classes with others at a similar level. They progress as stroke and skill competency is achieved. SwimWay coaches continually assess all students to ensure they are progressing their swimming through the SwimWay programme. Their experienced team have a huge base of knowledge and experience of which they are incredibly proud. All instructors undergo constant training and development, ensuring they are the best they can be when it come to health and safety and teaching techniques. This enables SwimWay to provide you with fantastic swimming lessons that are also safe, and lots of fun! WHY YOU SHOULD CHOOSE SWIMWAY’S PROGRAMME? The most important aspects of the classes is the lesson quality, teachers’ enthusiasm, and the methodology they have developed and utilise. Of course, environment and 4 4 J U LY 2 0 1 5
water quality/temperature also play an enormous factor in the students’ progress. Because SwimWay specialise in private or semi-private lessons, the children receive full, direct support inside the water from their teacher. This allows them to use only kickboards as a floatation device without sacrificing any safety measures. Other swim schools often use backpacks, shark wings and noodles which delay the learning process. A good programme will work on fundamentals such as breath control, buoyancy, body position, gliding and correct leg kick action before introducing to the full stroke. Students that are given the correct core elements will thrive, and become good swimmers.

Strap on a Fin and Learn to Swim! We know how important learning to swim is for all family members. It’s a popular after school and recreational activity. SwimFin has been designed by a highly qualified UK swimming coach with over 30 yrs experience. It’s a vertical aid and suitable for children from 2 yrs+ of all abilities. SwimFin can be used on all 4 strokes and is the only aid to have been endorsed by the Amateur Swimming Association (ASA). We’re very proud of that fact and are pleased to be partnered with leading organizations around the globe. So how will it help your child to swim? It works in harmony with the body because it’s worn on the back providing total freedom around the arms and legs allowing for a natural swimming position, with the fin working like a boat’s keel in the water. Kids love SwimFin because the shark element appeals as a fun piece of kit and encourages them into the water. It appeals to parents because it makes learning to swim more of a game than a chore. Tests have proved that it can reduce the process by up to a third less time. It’s also perfect for taking on holiday as the fin is highly visible in a busy pool or on the beach!

PREPARING YOUR CHILD FOR THEIR FIRST DAY AT SCHOOL
Y
ou might be taking the children on holiday this summer but if your child is starting at their first school in September, the butterflies for you, and your child will start now. If you know of prospective classmates, meet up over the summer - familiar faces on day one will help. Your child’s first day at school is a big milestone. Yes, your little baby is no more - you’ve now got a school child on your hands!
5 4 J U LY 2 0 1 5
Starting school means a lot of changes for both you and your child, and it is perfectly understandable to have concerns about your child starting school. You’ve probably been working hard to reassure your child that school will be exciting and fun. But you may not feel so confident yourself. Don’t brush these thoughts under the carpet. Starting school is just as important a change for you as it is for your child.
So, with just weeks to go before hordes of newlyuniformed four-year-olds pass through classroom doors for the first time, what can parents do to prepare their children, and limit the potential for tears – theirs and yours – on the big day? There is plenty you can do to help your child adjust to new groups of people - a group activity such as a music or dance class. Free storytime sessions at your local library provide a great opportunity for your child to meet others of a similar age. Or simply take her to your local park, it’s an easy way for her to interact with children, big and small, that she hasn’t come across before. Teach your child ‘life’ skills like getting dressed and undressed, using the toilet independently, washing their hands and putting things away – every little bit of independence helps. Play ‘schools’. Take turns in being the teacher and the pupil. Practise saying ‘bye bye’ to Mummy and Daddy at the gate. Keep these games short and fun. Find some books in your local library that talk about starting school – ask your child questions about what they’d do in this situation or that – get them involved in the idea of being at school. Involve them. Let them help choose ‘school stuff’ like their backpack or pencil case. Label everything with their name – let them ‘help’ by suggesting where to write it or handing you the pens. Discuss your own happy memories of school (provided you have some!). Perhaps mention games you played at break time or how much you liked your first teacher. Get them into a routine that’s compatible with school
hours. They might need an earlier bedtime and waking up time. Move towards the new routine over a few days rather than starting it suddenly the day before. Double-check you’ve got everything you need on the uniform list and that all items are labelled with nametapes. As you say goodbye on your child’s first day, it may be hard not to shed a tear. If you do have a cry, try not to let your child see. It may make them anxious that you are sad. Even distressed children soon settle into school. If you are worried, ask your child’s teacher or teaching assistant about strategies they use to help children settle. If you want to find out more about your child’s school world, get involved. Many schools encourage parents to help with reading, cookery or a school trip. Put a special treat in their lunchbox – lots of kids love to have a little note from Mum as well. You will be excited to see your child at the end of his school day, but don’t overwhelm him with questions. Although you’re desperate to know how it went, try to keep your questions simple. Ask who he sat next to at lunch, rather than a run-down of your child’s day. Don’t worry if your child says “I don’t know”, or I can’t remember”. He’s had a lot to take in on his first day. Be prepared for your house to feel empty and quiet during the school hours. Focus on the extra time you now have for yourself... join a health club, meet up with friends for lunch or join a mother’s club – these will all help to keep you busy during the school day. Just be rest assured that your child’s school will support your child and help them to feel a valued participant in school life.

Learning disabilities:
HELP YOUR CHILD LEARN A learning disability affects the way a person learns new things in any area of life, not just at school.
I
f your child has a learning disability, their ‘special educational needs’ can be met either at school with extra support, or in a special school. From September 1 2014, a new system for supporting children with this condition, and their parents, came into effect, and aims to ensure that any support your child gets, from their school or other setting, such as their nursery or childminders, should meet their needs. If you’re concerned that your child has special educational needs, and may need extra help, a specialist can carry out a statutory assessment of your child. This will describe any extra support that your child will need. If your child is diagnosed with a learning disability, you’ll want to ask what any parent would ask, which is: “What would help my child?”
Supporting your child’s learning... Dyslexia is thought to be one of the most common learning difficulties. It’s estimated that up to 1 in 10 in the UK has a certain degree of dyslexia, affecting people of all ages. Those with dyslexia have particular difficulty with: Early reading and spelling development, is the ability to identify how words are made up of smaller units of sound, known as phonemes. Changes in the sounds that make up words can lead to changes in their meaning. Verbal memory is the ability to remember a sequence of verbal information for a short period of time. For example, the ability to remember a short list such as “red, blue, green”, or a set of simple instructions. Rapid serial naming is the ability to name a series of colours, objects or numbers as fast as possible. Dyslexia only affects some skills and abilities, and is not linked to a person’s general level of intelligence. Children of all intellectual abilities, can be affected by dyslexia. Similarly, the difficulty a child with dyslexia has with reading and spelling is 5 6 J U LY 2 0 1 5
not determined by their intelligence, but by how severe their dyslexia is. If you think your child has dyslexia, the first step is to speak to their teacher or the school’s special needs coordinator. Many schools identify children who are having difficulty learning in particular areas and offer additional support. The school may request a more in-depth assessment. It is also possible to request private assessments, directly from an educational psychologist. What causes dyslexia? The exact cause of dyslexia is unknown, but it’s seen more commonly in families. Six genes have been identified that may be responsible for the condition, four of which affect the way the brain is formed during early life. MRI scans could show there is reduced function of one area towards the back of the brain, called the occipito-temporal cortex. Children with dyslexia face challenges every day but even children who have severe dyslexia can go on to lead full and productive lives.

Is your child ready for the new school year? With the new school year within view, Isla’s Mum Kirstie, knew her daughter wasn’t ready for it by any means. Kirstie: “I remember one of her teachers saying Oh, it will be ok, she’ll catch up by the end of the year.” the That was at year. of this beginning ere nearing But as we w /April time, rch towards Ma n I said “No, e h that was w ding, get her rea we need to fore next year. e especially b going into e She can’t b o reading n Year 2 with skills.”
I
sla hadn’t been doing very well at school, at all. She was getting to her second year of school and she wasn’t reading very well. She wasn’t writing at all. Her attention was really, really poor and she was often getting in trouble for distracting people. She found it very difficult to listen. She’d had eye sight problems from when she was 6 months old. So I kind of put it down to that. But at the end of her reception year, I thought there must be something not quite right. She wasn’t
5 8 J U LY 2 0 1 5
grasping any reading. She would never pick up a book. She’d never want to let me read to her. Her elder sister loved reading, and she loved me reading to her. So I definitely knew then, that something wasn’t quite right. CHALLENGES AT SCHOOL
Her school picked up on her coordination, constantly knocking things over. But her teachers never actually said anything might be wrong. It was myself that picked up on that, from her level of reading and comparing her to her sister. They did say that she slightly struggled with reading & listening. But they never said it could be dyslexia or it could be ADHD or anything like that – never! HELP FROM DAD
My Dad had a card dropped through the door a couple of months ago and it was him that actually said, “Well what
about this centre? You know, just go for an assessment.” We started treatment a week after her assessment. Which was just brilliant. I didn’t realise they could fit me in so quickly. I was just over the moon, although quite apprehensive, because I didn’t quite believe all the stories I’d heard. But I thought it was well worth giving it a go anyway. The first treatment was absolutely fantastic. Isla really, really enjoyed it. She was very over excited, jumping around & she didn’t listen very well. After about 2 sessions it was getting to the stage where she couldn’t wait to go to her sessions, which was great! Before that she’d never really been bothered about school. She found lots of excuses to come home from school, often pulling a ‘sickie’. She’s been excited about doing the treatment, she’s loved the homework. After a couple of sessions, she actually asked to do the homework, which is quite bizarre!
SO, IS YOUR CHILD REALLY READY FOR THE NEW SCHOOL YEAR?
PROOF OF THE PUDDING
Vision, Reading, Comprehension, Spelling, Maths, Concentration, Confidence, Handwriting, Tiredness, Headaches, Motion Sickness and much more.
We noticed her improvement from the second session, where she moved up a book level in her reading. By the third session she’d moved up another book level. Then a couple of weeks later her teacher actually came up to me as I picked her up to take her to the sessions and said “I don’t know what’s happening, but her listening is just amazing. Her observation is improved, her coordination’s improved and also her patience and frustration is a lot better. I don’t know what’s happening but it’s just fantastic!” And that was her teacher, saying it to me. She used to try and read with a reading ruler, which was red and blue. From about half way through the treatment she didn’t read with it at all and she’s gone up now 3 book stages. I was just over the moon - three book stages in a matter of weeks! Her handwriting’s really improved too. She used to write really big, scrawly, mirrored letters a lot of the time. She’d often miss letters out. Now her writing is a lot smaller, it’s really, really neat. It’s just amazing! I feel like crying.

Family Photographer James Bignell speaks to the Life Magazines about his work.
W
hat makes a good family photographer? Well apart from the usual things you would expect like photographic experience, knowledge of light, equipment, composition etc. James thinks empathy is the greatest quality one can posses when photographing children and families. It is his 16th year as a specialist in this field and after photographing over 3000 families at their homes and on location he still finds the process a wonderful way to learn about people and how families operate. He has 4 children of his own and can understand how different each child can be. “I like to make people feel at ease, I make it a no fuss easy experience. We generally go for a walk in the park or on a beach, we chat away and find common ground. Before you know it I’ve taken around 1500 images and a couple of hours have gone past. And we are done.” Being creative is James’s life and always has been, with over 30 years experience as a professional photographer he has seen many changes but is excited by the future. “It is wonderful now with the latest equipment we very rarely miss a good shot like in the days of film. Then the process of working on the images gives you so many different creative paths to take. Because I used to print Black and White in the darkroom I know now how to get the same looks we used to use with print. With different tones and special techniques, I use the whole of my knowledge to get amazing prints of the images for my clients. “ James travels all over the world and has clients in the Middle 6 0 J U LY 2 0 1 5
East, America and most of Europe. “I feel like it’s my life’s work to try and capture special moments for families to treasure, to create those precious family heirlooms. I want to show the bond between mother and son, father and daughter. It is more than just photography to me; it is a way of giving something very special. I want my photographs to tell me something about that person, I’m not keen on the emphasis on how clever the photographer is if it’s at the expense of the subject, it is all about the subject to me” James looks after his clients personally and makes sure each step of the way they are taken care of, it is a truly bespoke service and he goes back time and again to the same clients. It is quite scary how quickly everyone changes, “ I have now seen children grow from babies into young adults and that really puts everything into perspective for me. “ “My eldest daughter has just finished her GCSE’S and my youngest turns 9 soon. It’s all about family for me; I put my heart into what I do because I know how much love we all have for our children. If I can move someone with my work or show that connection between parents and their children, I feel like I have given them something that is really priceless” THE DETAILS You can contact James through is web site at www.jamesbignell.co.uk or email him on info@jamesbignell.co.uk

Anxiety in children Just like adults, children and young people feel worried and anxious at times. But if it is starting to affect their wellbeing, they may need some help to overcome it.
C
hildren tend to feel anxious about different things at different ages. Many of these worries are a normal part of growing up. From about eight months to three years, for example, it’s very common for young children to have something called separation anxiety. They may become clingy and cry when separated from their parents. This is a normal stage in children’s development and tends to ease off at around age two to three. It’s also common for pre-school children to develop specific fears or phobias. Common fears include animals, insects, storms, heights, water, blood, and the dark…and when starting at a new school. These fears usually go away gradually on their own. WHEN IS ANXIETY A PROBLEM FOR CHILDREN? Anxiety becomes a problem for children when it starts to get in the way of their day-to-day life. Severe anxiety can harm children’s psychological and emotional wellbeing, affecting their self-esteem and confidence. They may become withdrawn and avoid situations that make them feel anxious. WHAT ARE THE SIGNS OF ANXIETY IN CHILDREN? When young children feel anxious, they cannot always understand or express what they are feeling. You may notice that they become irritable, tearful, clingy or have difficulty sleeping or eating. They may wake in the night, start wetting the bed or have bad dreams. In older children you may notice a lack the confidence to try new things, find it hard to concentrate and prone to angry outbursts.
HOW TO HELP YOUR ANXIOUS CHILD If your child is experiencing anxiety, there is plenty you can do to help... It’s important to talk to your child. reassure them and show them you understand how they feel. Focus on exploring solutions with your 6 2 J U LY 2 0 1 5
child, and help them plan ways to cope with them. With younger children... you could say, ‘I’ll take you to the party, knock on the door and talk to the mum or dad, then you can give your friend their present”. OTHER WAYS TO EASE ANXIETY IN CHILDREN Children of all ages find regular routines reassuring, so try to stick to regular daily routines where possible. If your child is anxious because of distressing events, such as a bereavement or separation, see if you can find books or films that will help them understand their feelings. Try not to become anxious yourself or overprotective. Practice simple relaxation techniques with your child, such as taking three deep, slow breaths, breathing in for a count of three and out for three. Distraction can be helpful for young children. For example, if they are anxious about going to nursery, play games on the way there, this is a way of focusing attention away from internal anxiety and worries. Turn an old tissue box into a ‘worry’ box. Get your child to write down or draw their worries and post them into the box. Then you can sort through the box together at the end of the day or week. WHEN SHOULD WE GET HELP? If your child’s anxiety is severe and interferes with their everyday life, it’s a good idea to get some outside help. Some children do grow out of anxiety but, if it’s not addressed in childhood, it can continue. A visit to your GP is a good place to start. If your child’s anxiety is affecting their school life, talk to their school as well. Parents can get help and advice around children’s mental health from Young Minds’ free parent helpline on 0808 802 5544 (Monday to Friday, 9.30am-4pm).
