Baby Dior Autumn 2024 Collection presents

DIOR PARADISIO

WHITE DIOR

“This is paradise*!˝ exclaimed Christian Dior on one of his trips to Italy. Throughout his life and meteoric career, he succumbed to the thousand charms of the country’s landscapes, admiring the entrancing colors, curves and unique light of its havens of peace. As a tribute to the affinities woven between the House and that marvellous land, the Baby Dior Autumn 2024 collection – designed by Cordelia de Castellane – is permeated by the enchanting spirit of la dolce vita.

A dreamlike journey that unfolds through three idyllic ports of call. The first, Sweet Palazzo, is filled with the refreshing atmosphere of Florence’s palaces, offering an unprecedented invitation to venture away. Subtly echoing the art of the Renaissance, it unveils infinitely romantic creations: delicate floral motifs blossom on dresses and skirts in pastel shades while tops and jeans in washed denim add to the selection and, continuing the gentle, sunny interlude, jackets, T-shirts, and shirts are adorned with touches of blue or mint green, matched with models in cotton gabardine.

Named White Dior, the monochromatic beauty of the second theme evokes the stone walls of the trulli in Puglia. Exquisitely refined, the pieces are sublimated by poetic nuances of white and punctuated with textured plant details, while sweaters and pants are distinguished by the CD Coeur heart-shaped initials.

The final stop on this fascinating odyssey, the Cabana Days universe reveals a wardrobe inspired by the beaches of Forte dei Marmi in Tuscany. Terry cloth ponchos, elegant swimsuits and bermudas are aglow with vibrant, joyful hues. An irresistible celebration of the founding-couturier’s passion for the gentle art de vivre and delights of the Mediterranean.

Barbie turns 65: How the iconic doll secured her place in fashion history

A few ingredients are needed for a classic Barbie doll: confidence, bravery, legendary status, and impeccable style.

When inventor Ruth Handler first introduced the pint-sized plastic doll (made in the likeness of an adult) to the world at the 1959 Toy Fair in New York City on March 9, Barbie – whose full name was Barbara Millicent Roberts, named after Handler’s daughter, Barbara, and was from (fictional) Willows, Wisconsin – was wearing her now iconic black and white striped chevron swimsuit, with a pair of white retro cat-eye sunglasses in her hand.

Handler, who died in 2002 aged 85, had a revolutionary take on dolls and wanted to change the way children played with them.

“My whole philosophy of Barbie was that through the doll, the little girl could be anything she wanted to be,” she said of her revolutionary invention.

“Barbie always represented the fact that a woman has choices.”

Now, Barbie turns 65 – and there has been a whole host of incarnations over the years, including the 1977 Superstar Barbie and 1985 Peaches ‘n‘ Cream Barbie. Inspired by the milestone birthday, the 2024 Spring Fashionistas dolls pay homage to Barbie’s evolving fashion through the years by replicating her iconic looks into modern-day outfits.

The Barbie 65th Anniversary collection also revisits some of the most popular careers and fashion looks from Barbie’s archives.

The latest career dolls include a farm vet, pop star and astronaut – three of the most popular careers held by Barbie since her creation. One of the 65th Signature Anniversary dolls is inspired by the original 1959 Barbie, dressed in a classic white and black stripe scallop-edged ballgown, with a sheer underskirt paired with black gloves, in a nod back to that iconic swimsuit.

Barbie has always been a trendsetter. By Yolanthe Fawehinmi.

A lot of outfits are inspired by female trailblazers across various industries.

“This is seen through Barbie’s impressive closet and repertoire of 250+ careers – Barbie is never afraid to try new things and inspires her fans to live out their limitless potential,” said Kim Culmone, senior vice president and head of design for dolls at Mattel.

“We are committed to using her platform to share a multi-dimensional view of beauty with kids across the globe. We’re proud of our journey with Barbie to be reflective of the world children see around them–and we will continue to add representation through careers, fashions, hair textures, style and more.”

268 JUNE 2024 YUMMY MUMMY

How would Culmone describe Barbie’s evolving and effervescent style?

“Barbie’s style is about self-expression, aspiration and living authentically. Power dressing inspires confidence and empowers you to be unapologetically yourself.

“Barbie has played a role in the cultivation of personal style and expression across generations. Countless designers have used Barbie as a muse and likewise, Barbie is inspired by pop culture and fashion,” she added.

“Often, Barbie is a designer’s first introduction to fashion – as they dress and style her, they discover the power and delight of storytelling through her closet. Her style is unique as not only does she follow the trends, she sets them. One thing stays the same though – she is always a source of inspiration and creativity.

“She evolves with the times, never allowing her style to go stagnant. Her wardrobe is limitless. All in one day, Barbie can rock a glamorous designer gown to breakfast, wear an astronaut suit to space for work, and then transition to the latest street style for dinner. Barbie is at her best when her looks are reflective of what’s happening now in fashion.”

When Greta Gerwig’s Barbie movie –starring Australian actress and producer Margot Robbie, Canadian actor Ryan Gosling, American stars Issa Rae and America Ferrera, among others – came out last year, there was a sharp rise in the ‘Barbiecore’ trend, with hot pink having a moment.

The trend, which encapsulates Barbie’s largerthan-life pink aesthetic and idyllic way of living, often paired with nostalgic accessories, was sported by celebrities such as Florence Pugh, Lizzo and Vanessa Hudgens, and even made a mark on fashion runways – including the Valentino 2023 autumn/winter show in collaboration with Pantone Color Institute, which featured the bright Pink PP hue created exclusively for the Italian fashion house.

“I loved seeing fans lean into Barbiecore,” said Culmone. “We are seeing the world reclaim hyper-femininity, and Barbie is here for it. I’ve always said pink is not a passive colour; it’s a power colour.

“Pink has always been Barbie’s favourite colour – she even has her own signature ‘Barbie Pink’ Pantone shade (PMS 219). In the 1970s, the team strategically began to prominently [use] the colour pink in packaging. This creative shift contributed to the pink association with the brand. For Barbie, pink stands for limitless potential and is a symbol of empowerment,” adds Culmone – noting that a book, Barbie: The World Tour, will also be published on March 19, commemorating how movie star Robbie and stylist Andrew Mukamal brought some of Barbie’s most memorial outfits and curated vintage pieces to the red carpet during the film’s press tour.

“Barbie first stepped into the fashion scene 65 years ago,” Culmone continued. “Since then, she’s secured her place in history with her incredible wardrobe, amazing resume, and has been dressed by the world’s most famous designers – inspiring millions as their first fashion muse and strong female role model.”

“Often, Barbie is a designer’s first introduction to fashion – as they dress and style her, they discover the power and delight of storytelling through her closet”

Warner Bros. Studio Tour London – The Making of Harry Potter celebrates the 20th anniversary of

Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban

Return to Azkaban. Until 4th September 2024

Fans of the Harry Potter film series will be thrilled to hear that the Return to Azkaban feature has now opened at Warner Bros. Studio Tour London, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the cinematic release of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

When entering the Studio Tour, visitors are being regaled by the Hogwarts Frog Choir, conducted by Professor Flitwick, under an enchanted ceiling of over 100 floating candles in the Great Hall.

For the first time ever, the Divination classroom set is now on display at the Studio Tour, as seen when Harry, Ron and Hermione attend their first lesson with Professor Trelawney, allowing fans to discover the details up close. When creating the Divination classroom, Set Decorator, Stephenie McMillan and Production Designer, Stuart Craig, were inspired by tea shops from India and the Middle East. The room is draped in rich red fabric

and decorated with jewel-toned velvet pouffes, numerous patterned rugs and Arabian-style lanterns, creating a classroom in which eccentric Professor Trelawney would feel at home.

During filming, Set Decorators were tasked to visit markets, auctions and specialist dealers to source all the teacups needed for the classroom, including Harry’s Grim cup, made in the 19th century in Japan, which is now on display at the Studio Tour. As seen on-screen, the set is home to the 28-layered teacup tower that holds over 500 vintage cups and saucers.

The Defence Against the Dark Arts classroom aesthetics changed with each teacher that occupied it; for Professor Lupin, inspiration came from collections of archaeological objects including skulls and creatures under glass domes. A new section of the set can now be seen at the Studio Tour featuring the handcrafted, Art-Nouveauinspired Boggart wardrobe centrepiece, to recreate the fan-favourite moment where students learn to cast the Riddikulus spell.

Looking out of the windows of the Divination and Defence Against the Dark Arts classroom windows, visitors will notice intricate works of scenic art, a filmmaking technique used to bring the outside into a soundstage. Scenic Artists would take reference images of landscapes before hand-painting beautiful artworks of the Hogwarts grounds, based in the Scottish Highlands.

Visitors will also see The Monster Book of Monsters rampage in Harry’s bedroom at the Leaky Cauldron, complete with the original Tudor bed seen on-screen. Filmmakers originally hired the bed from a furniture company during production and were pleased to learn that it was still available 20 years later, bringing it to the Studio Tour for the Return to Azkaban feature. In the wizarding world, the Knight Bus acts as transport for stranded witches and wizards.

Tickets must be pre-booked at wbstudiotour.co.uk and cannot be bought at the attraction.

Brand new for the Return to Azkaban feature, a full cross-section of the bus interior is on display at the Studio Tour, complete with sliding beds and a swinging chandelier. During production, filmmakers created the Knight Bus’s frantic journey using some of cinema’s oldest techniques, shooting the bus travelling at normal speed while cars around it went at a snail’s pace. The footage was then sped up to create the appearance of the Knight Bus’s magically enhanced momentum. Return to Azkaban is a special feature running until 4th September and all new additions are included in the ticket price.

TREASURE FOREVER….

Imagine your newborn baby’s tiny hands and feet preserved forever, your fingers entwined on your wedding day, or even your furry friend’s paw print turned into a work of art. Wrightson and Platt bring these moments to life as pieces of sculpture, wall art and stunning jewellery.

Over the past 20 years, the London-based lifecasting specialists have built a reputation and loyal following due to the amazing craftsmanship and attention to detail captured in their wide range of beautiful designs.

The process starts with a casting appointment in the family home or maternity ward. Here, the moulds are made using skin-safe dental alginate which captures incredibly fine skin detail. The moulds are then taken back to the company’s studio in southeast London where the master casts are poured in high quality plaster. From just one set of casts, their customers can then order from a wide range of designs.

As Managing Director Alison Martin explains: “Unlike other life-casting companies, we keep the master casts in our archive for up to 10 years. This means our customers can come back and order surprise gifts or sibling designs when a new baby arrives.”

Their long-established partnership with London’s Portland Hospital has introduced the company to a whole host of household names

including royalty and A-list celebrities, but they won’t be naming any names; discretion is vital to their reputation, as Alison explains: “There’s always huge interest when the rich and famous have a new baby. We feel incredibly privileged to be invited into any family’s home at such a magical time and would never betray that trust, no matter who the client is!”

However, some customers are very happy to talk about the experience: “The whole casting experience in my room at The Portland was a very happy one” says Tamara Beckwith “but nothing prepared me for the joy at receiving my baby’s bronze 2-day old feet. All these years later, I still marvel at all the little creases and how small she was. Just holding them in my hands takes me back to a wonderfully happy, special time.”

‘WHY DO BABYGROWS HAVE ALL THESE POPPERS?’

This is a question most parents probably ask as they are dressing their newborn in the middle of the night.

As a Mummy of two very wriggly little boys I have first hand experience of the struggle to dress them, it’s like wrestling a lion cub trying to get them dressed after bath time. ZIPPYUP’s will make nappy and outfit changes so much quicker and easier.

With this in mind I got to work on making ZIPPYUP a brand that gives you not only useful but stylish babygrows.

Before promoting myself to the position of Mummy I had a background in textile design and fashion, a passion I didn’t want to be lost in the midsts of motherhood. I have taken the many years of experience and put it to good use by designing a babygrow that works well for both the wearer and the dresser.

ZIPPYUP products aren’t just well designed, they are beautiful quality. The collection has now expanded with an organic cotton range in a variety of colours, Winter fleece onesies are great for after swimming or just to keep cosy on strolls in the buggy…and now sleeping bags with legs. I personally source and work with the factories making ZIPPYUPs to get the best possible materials.

All ZIPPYUPs have concealed zips so they do not have contact with your baby’s skin and the tab at the neck ensures the zip puller doesn’t catch on any little chins.

Sleeves have turn back cuffs so you don’t need separate (often lost or odd) mittens.

There is a wide variety of prints and colour combinations including unisex colours such as aqua and pale grey along with traditional whites, pinks, blues and rainbows.

I am very excited to have also launched the new ZIPPYUP sleeping bag with legs and detachable arms. Select from 1 Tog and 2.5 Tog thickness, designed to be worn as a baggy fit so it can also be layered with a ZIPPYUP babygrow underneath for extra warmth. The sleeves simply zip on or off depending on your babies needs. Sizes are from 6-12 months up to 24-36 months.

New to the ZIPPYUP family this month is a subscription service, you can have a range of babygrows delivered straight to your door every month! Choose how many and what size you want in either girl, boy or neutral colours and we do the rest!

At ZIPPYUP we are always developing new designs, prints and colour combinations, I look forward to sharing these with you. zippyup.com

Cervical Screening

In females in the UK, cervical cancer is the 14th most common cancer, with 3200 new cases every year and 850 deaths each year.

99.8% of cervical cancer cases in the UK are caused by persistent High Risk Human Papilloma Virus (HR-HPV) infection. Cervical cancer is highly preventable through HPV vaccinations for 12- to 13-year-olds and cervical screening programme. Sadly, the figures show that only 70% of women invited for cervical screening take it up.

A recent study by Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust found that women who didn’t attend their smear test said that being embarrassed about their body, or feeling embarrassed that a stranger would be

examining an intimate area; or fear it will hurt as reasons for non-attendance.

Cervical screening is a very important test for early detection of cell changes of the cervix. Early testing can help prevent the development of cancer. Women in the UK between the ages of 25 and 64 years are invited for regular cervical screening under the NHS cervical screening programme.

At the cervical screening appointment, a doctor or nurse will take a sample of cells from the cervix using a small soft brush. This is not a painful procedure, and it can take less than one minute to take this sample. The sample is tested for highrisk human papilloma virus (HR-HPV). HPV is

a group of viruses, some of which can lead to cell changes in the cervix which can then lead to cancerous changes.

If your smear test shows that HPV is negative, no further testing will be needed, and the doctor will recommend when to schedule a repeat screening. It is unlikely you will develop cell changes or cervical cancer without having HPV. If HPV is found (positive results), then cytology is performed on the sample. This looks for abnormal cell changes in the cervical cells. If the cells look normal, then usually a repeat HR-HPV test will be recommended in 6-12 months.

If abnormal cell changes are found, those patients may be referred for a colposcopy. A Colposcopy is an examination where the cervix can be looked at in more detail, further samples can be taken of any abnormal areas and treatment given if necessary. Many cell changes go away on their own, but some may develop into cancer, a colposcopy helps identify which may need treatment.

There is a vaccine against HPV and is currently offered to girls and boys from the age of 12 on the NHS and can also be given in private clinics. If the vaccine is missed, you can still speak to your doctor about getting one. The vaccine aims to stop you getting some types of the HPV virus. It is still recommended that you continue to have smear tests if you are vaccinated as it does not protect against all types of high-risk HPV.

Cervical screening should not be delayed as it is one of the best ways to protect yourself against cervical cancer. So if you have received an invitation, or missed your last screening, don’t delay making an appointment as getting checked can save your life.
