8 expert tips to beat the school bugs!

Help protect your family’s immunity

As a parent, daily school routines and work commutes can be a stressful time, not only is there lots to prepare, but we are also mindful of our little ones picking up those dreaded classroom germs. No parent wants their children to miss out on school due to being unwell, and many cannot afford time out of their busy schedules to take care of them. Luckily, there are plenty of things parents can do to help ensure the whole family stays resilient and ‘fighting fit’ for school. Here, Dr Jenna Macciochi PhD, immunologist and mum of two shares her expert tips on maintaining immune health.

EXPERT IMMUNOLOGIST TIPS:

4. Stay hydrated: Proper hydration is vital for overall health. It helps keep airways properly lubricated with the right amount and consistency of mucus to prevent infection, which is particularly important as our children start playing sports and games again during term-time.

5. Support your defences with Sambucol: Incorporate Sambucol into your family’s daily routine to fortify your immune system. Its rich blend of black elderberries, antioxidants, vitamin C, and zinc provides essential nutrients to help safeguard your health, especially during back-to-school season. And it tastes great too!

1. Prioritise prevention: Minimise the risk of falling poorly by practicing good hygiene habits. Encourage children to regularly wash their hands, sneeze/cough into their elbow or cover their nose with a tissue to help reduce exposure to germs.

2. Get plenty of rest: Ensure you and your children get sufficient sleep each night, as rest is crucial for a strong immune system. Prioritise a consistent sleep schedule to support your body’s natural defence mechanisms.

3. Balanced nutrition: Embrace a diet rich in fruits, vegetables with plenty of plant fibre, healthy fats and protein which provide your family’s immune system with essential nutrients.

6. Manage stress: Chronic stress can weaken your immune system, making you and your family more susceptible to infections which can be easily spread, especially if your children pick up a bug from school. Curate your own toolbox of stressrelief techniques such as meditation, breathwork as well as engaging in hobbies that bring you joy.

7. Exercise regularly: Incorporate physical activity into your family routine, as it can enhance your immune system’s efficiency. Even moderate exercise, such as walking or cycling to school, can boost your body’s natural defences.

8. Stay home when unwell: If the inevitable does happen and your children do fall unwell, be considerate and ensure they are kept off school to avoid spreading germs. Use Sambucol to help.

“As a family we take” Sambucol, an immunity supplement range featuring the antioxidant action of natural black elderberries combined with ingredients such as *vitamin C and zinc.

THE LONDON GENERAL PRACTICE

WHAT IS MENINGITIS?

Meningitis is a serious infection which affects the brain. It can occur at any age. It is usually caused by a bacterium, most commonly the meningococcus; this is the most serious infection but other bacteria such as pneumococcus, tuberculosis or haemophilus bacteria can be the cause. Meningitis can also be caused by a number of viruses including enteric, mumps or herpes viruses; infection caused by these viruses are usually less serious.

HOW WOULD I RECOGNISE MENINGITIS?

Meningitis starts with a high temperature, headache, neck stiffness, photophobia (dislike of light), nausea and sometimes vomiting. A fine skin rash that does not blanche on compression with a drinking glass then appears. Confusion, sleepiness, or convulsions also occur. Babies and small children may present with just being unwell, but neck stiffness is almost always present, inability to bend the neck forward while in a relaxed lying posture; this can apply to adults as well.

HOW IS MENINGITIS TREATED?

First and foremost, urgent admission to hospital where blood tests, throat swabs, a lumbar puncture to examine the spinal fluid. Other investigations will be done where the patient is not improving. Then intravenous antibiotics are given urgently as soon as immediate tests for infection have been completed. The patient might be in clinical shock, when life support measures will be introduced such as fluid infusions, steroid injections or oxygen.

IS THERE ANYTHING MORE I SHOULD KNOW?

Meningitis can be a very serious illness and the patient MUST be taken to hospital for confirmation of the diagnosis and treatment as quickly as possible because patients, particularly children, can deteriorate (go downhill) with alarming speed.

AND, WHAT ABOUT IMMUNISATION?

Meningococcus, pneumococcus, and haemophilus vaccines are an integral part of the NHS infant and children vaccination programme. Parents are strongly advised to have their children immunised.

The Secret Life of Reptiles & Amphibians at LONDON ZOO

Brand new experience opening Easter 2024

Get to know the planet’s most mysterious creatures at London Zoo, as the world-famous conservation zoo unveils a brand-new experience.

Home to some of the planet’s most fascinating yet threatened species – including one of the world’s largest frogs, jewel-coloured geckos, and turtles with heads so big they cannot fit in their shells - Secret Life of Reptiles and Amphibians will introduce visitors to wondrously weird creatures.

Visitors will first get a glimpse into the Zoo’s specialist breeding and animal care areas, with the ‘behind-the-scenes’ bought to the fore in the new space. Visitors will come nose-to-nose with one of the world’s largest frogs – as the breeding group of Critically Endangered mountain chicken frogs at London Zoo will be visible for the first time.

Secret Life of Reptiles and Amphibians has been meticulously designed to meet every need of its inhabitants – with each of its 33 species having individual, and very precise, requirements for temperature, humidity, water quality and lighting. The custom-built facility features 11 different climate-controlled zones and more than 50 aquatic systems, with each habitat providing shade, egg laying sites, basking locations and camouflage areas for the very particular residents.

“Visitors will first get a glimpse into the Zoo’s specialist breeding and animal care areas, with the ‘behind-the-scenes’ bought to the fore in the new space”

The Zoo’s 1.9metre long Philippine crocodile may be spotted basking on the banks of, or swimming in, its 30,000-litre pool, while young visitors can board a boat like the ones used by researchers to study the crocs in the wild. The army of mossy frogs will demonstrate their unparalleled camouflage skills in their leafy home, in contrast to the turquoise gecko, who well and truly stands out from the crowd with its electricblue skin.

Stunning Mangshan vipers and a striking King Cobra have tree trunks to coil around and leaves to shelter beneath, while the big-headed turtles will be keeping an eye on it all – because their shells provide no shelter for their supersized skulls.

A shadowy underwater home is hoped to provide the perfect love nest for the Zoo’s pair of Critically Endangered Chinese giant salamanders –the world’s largest amphibians, sometimes referred to as ‘living fossils’.

TREASURE FOREVER….

Imagine your newborn baby’s tiny hands and feet preserved forever, your fingers entwined on your wedding day, or even your furry friend’s paw print turned into a work of art. Wrightson and Platt bring these moments to life as pieces of sculpture, wall art and stunning jewellery.

Over the past 20 years, the London-based lifecasting specialists have built a reputation and loyal following due to the amazing craftsmanship and attention to detail captured in their wide range of beautiful designs.

The process starts with a casting appointment in the family home or maternity ward. Here, the moulds are made using skin-safe dental alginate which captures incredibly fine skin detail. The moulds are then taken back to the company’s studio in southeast London where the master casts are poured in high quality plaster. From just one set of casts, their customers can then order from a wide range of designs.

As Managing Director Alison Martin explains: “Unlike other life-casting companies, we keep the master casts in our archive for up to 10 years. This means our customers can come back and order surprise gifts or sibling designs when a new baby arrives.”

Their long-established partnership with London’s Portland Hospital has introduced the company to a whole host of household names

including royalty and A-list celebrities, but they won’t be naming any names; discretion is vital to their reputation, as Alison explains: “There’s always huge interest when the rich and famous have a new baby. We feel incredibly privileged to be invited into any family’s home at such a magical time and would never betray that trust, no matter who the client is!”

However, some customers are very happy to talk about the experience: “The whole casting experience in my room at The Portland was a very happy one” says Tamara Beckwith “but nothing prepared me for the joy at receiving my baby’s bronze 2-day old feet. All these years later, I still marvel at all the little creases and how small she was. Just holding them in my hands takes me back to a wonderfully happy, special time.”
