The opening of Bristol's first electric vehicle charging hub in Eastville Park SIGNIFICANT moves towards tackling air pollution in Bristol are under way - and research confirms that they can't come soon enough.

A new electric vehicle charging hub opened in Eastville Park last month and Bristol City Council is pressing ahead with two schemes: a ban on all privately-owned diesel vehicles in an area around the Centre,

Broadmead, Redcliffe and the Harbourside between 7am and 3pm, seven days a week and a charge on more polluting commercial vehicles for an area parts of Easton, St Philip's, St Paul's and Montpelier.

The RAC has warned that drivers seeking to avoid these zones could look for alternative routes, thus increasing congestion and exhaust fumes

in areas such as Fishponds.

Residents also fear that the new McDonald's drive-through will add to air pollution.

This comes as research reveals that children living near busy Bristol roads may have stunted lung growth because of air pollution, which is estimated to cause 47 to 61 early deaths a year in the east of the city.

Hunt continues for armed robbery suspect POLICE want to trace this man, who was seen escaping through a Fishponds estate after a knifepoint robbery at a travel agent.

Detectives are linking three raids on travel agents over the past few months.

The most recent was at the travel agent in Downend Road, Downend on Friday October 25, at 3.15pm. Afterwards the suspect made off across the nearby Dial Lane allotments and was later spotted cycling through the Oldbury Court area.

In all three incidents a man with his face covered threatened staff with a small knife before making off with cash.

The CCTV image was taken near the scene of the first robbery, which happened in Regent Street, Kingswood on June 7 at 2.15pm.

The second was at a travel agent in Thornbury High Street on October 22 at 5pm.

Appealing for information, an Avon and Somerset police spokesperson said: "We’d like to speak to the man in the image, as we think he may have information which could assist our inquiry."

Anyone who recognises him should call 101 and quote the crime reference number 5219 247 579.

n NEWS BRISTOL'S first electric vehicle charging hub has launched in Eastville Park.

It is the first of four planned for the region, each housing four to eight rapid-charge connections that can charge a vehicle up to 80 per cent in 30 minutes.

A new toilet block is also being installed, although its opening has been delayed,and bird and bat boxes and several new trees are being installed.

Friends of Eastville Park aim to soften the impact of the appearance of the transformer and fencing by introducing soft planting and artwork. The tree planting programme to replace those felled to make way for the hub will be undertaken by Parkwork.

The opening event, on November 20, coincided with the launch of Revive, a new councilowned public electric vehicle charging network in the West of England, taking over from previous network Source West.

Revive will serve electric vehicle drivers in Bristol, Bath and North East Somerset, South

by Bristol Energy, Bristol City Council’s own energy supply company.

Councillor Kye Dudd, cabinet member for Transport at Bristol City Council, said: “Revive will provide us with a critical service for residents and visitors reliable EV charging.

“The improvements will make it easier for more people to use electric vehicles, by providing more charge points across the West of England and a simplified payment system.

clubs, electric freight deliveries, more electric vans in council fleets and electric taxis. Electric vehicles also help us improve air quality in Bristol, as they do not produce tailpipe emissions when running.

A map of existing, planned and suggested charge point locations is now available.

Revive is funded by the Office for Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV), which awarded the four West of England authorities £7.1million as part of the Go Ultra Low West (GULW) programme. The project’s aim is to promote the uptake of electric vehicles, including plug-in hybrids, across the region.

Revive membership is free and charging will be on a pay-asyou-go basis.

Stoke Park carriage drive revival gets nod A CONTROVERSIAL mile-long path for cyclists and pedestrians following a historic carriage drive at Stoke Park has been approved.

Bristol city councillors voted unanimously for the route after hearing wheelchair users and parents with pushchairs cannot use the open space because of muddy fields.

Friends of Stoke Park member Stephen Bartle presented a 480-signature petition asking for the proposals to be thrown out on the grounds they would “visually harm the very thing that is so special” about the area and cause “conflict” between walkers and cyclists at the 267-acre park.

But a council planning committee agreed with officers’ recommendation to give the go-ahead to the 3m (10ft) wide path, which will run mostly north/south on the north west side of the park from Sir Johns Lane to Jellicoe Avenue, near

It will follow the former carriage ride created by 18thcentury landscape gardener Thomas Wright, who designed the estate.

There were 50 objections, mostly opposing any kind of development in the Stapleton

and Frome Valley Conservation Area as well as concerns about conflict between pedestrians and cyclists, and 19 comments in support of improved access.

A report to councillors said: “The proposed development of open space is found to be acceptable in this instance on the basis the proposed use would enhance recreational use of the park. The proposal is not found

to cause undue risk of conflict between users or result in dangerous conditions.”

Cllr Eleanor Combley (Green, Bishopston and Ashley Down) branded it “entirely unsuitable as a cycle route”.

She said: “There is already a suitable route around the outside of the park which could be refurbished without cutting into the green space and provide a much safer alternative for both cyclists and other park users.”

Harriet Bradley (Lab, Brislington West) said: “It is really important that disabled people and mothers with children have access to these green spaces. At the moment they have real difficulties with this park, so I am totally in favour of this plan.”

The part of the planned path in neighbouring South Gloucestershire is still awaiting planning permission.

Pupils play their part for Children in Need YOUNGSTERS from Chester Park infant and junior schools made the most of the chance to leave their uniform at home for a day – and raised hundreds of pounds for charity in the process.

The event for this year's Children in Need day included a visit from the national appeal's mascot Pudsey bear and raised more than £360.

Head teacher Mike McNama said: "The children of Chester Park had a special visitor recently as Pudsey turned up to help raise money for Children In Need.

"The children and the parents loved seeing Pudsey and dressing in non-uniform for the day. The schools raised £367.37.

"The School Council work hard to support a range of charities over the course of the year and have worked closely with the NSPCC to raise money through a sponsored spelling event, as well as supporting the Julian Trust through donations of food for the homeless.”

Overall this year's BBC Children in Need has raised around £48 million so far.

Since it was founded, Children in Need has given more than £2.1 million to Bristol projects, including £79,330 this year to Home-Start Bristol to fund weekly support sessions for families with children who are experiencing complex needs and parenting issues.

n NEWS CAMPAIGNERS are demanding action after experts found children living near busy Bristol roads may have stunted lung growth.

Roadside air pollution can also make asthmatic children more likely to cough and raise the risk of heart attack, stroke, heart disease, and lung cancer in all residents, according to a team who looked at the health of people living within 50 metres of a major road in nine UK cities.

In Bristol, the King’s College London research team found children living near busy roads such as Fishponds Road, Muller Road and Stapleton Road are predicted to have five per cent less lung growth than children living in the city’s quieter, less polluted streets.

Children with asthmatic symptoms living by a major road in Bristol may also be five per cent more likely to suffer “bronchitic symptoms” such as cough and phlegm.

I don't know if air pollution caused her asthma but it definitely makes it worse. We walk to school through toxic pollution.

"East Bristol fails to be on the council’s radar for any strategies to reduce air pollution.

“That I live in a time where cars are more important than people breaks my heart. We need politicians to stop talking about this and take decisive action.”

23 sent to jail after drugs crackdown A SIX-month police operation against crack cocaine and heroin dealing in East Bristol has seen 23 people sent to prison.

Avon and Somerset police said the crackdown was launched in response to offences of violence associated with class A drugs supply in communities in the east of the city.

Police said Operation Minimal targeted established drug dealing lines and those operating them, after intelligence showed that organised gangs were involved.

The force said the criminals involved were exploiting vulnerable people, including children, to supply and store drugs and money.

The youngest person locked up in a series of sentencing hearings at Bristol crown Court in November was 17, while the oldest defendant dealt with was 54. He was one of 12 people given non-custodial sentences after being arrested during the operation.

Bristol East Local Policing Commander Chief Inspector Paul Wigginton said: “This is a really great set of results and removes a significant number of individuals responsible for the supply of illegal drugs off the streets of east Bristol.

“Drug dealing is a blight on the community and we take the supply of illegal drugs extremely seriously. This operation was initiated following community concerns about drug dealing in the area and the success is the result of months of hard

work, dedicated officers and a coordinated effort working with Operation Remedy officers to catch and apprehend these criminals.

“We are continually working hard to remove drug dealers from our streets and I hope these sentences will reassure the local community and send a clear message to other criminals that drug dealing will not be tolerated in Avon and Somerset and we will continue to pursue those who decide to break the law.”

Those from the Fishponds area sentenced were: Michael Merchant, 53, of Grove Road, Fishponds, who was jailed for 5 years and 7 months, with a Criminal Behaviour Order for 5 years, for four counts of supplying crack cocaine or heroin and possession of cannabis.

Lewis Parker, 19, of Brentry Road, Fishponds, who received a two year suspended sentence, 180 hours of unpaid work and

four months on an electronic tag for supplying crack cocaine or heroin and possessing cannabis.

Shazeb Malik, 18, of Stanshaw Road, Frenchay, who was sentenced to 2 years 4 months in a young offenders’ institution for 11 charges of supplying crack cocaine or heroin.

Isaac Smith, 42, of

Stonebridge Park, Eastville, was given a two-year suspended sentence and a nine-month drug rehabilitation order for supplying crack cocaine.

Leon Phillips, 40, of Freemantle Gardens, Eastville, was fined £200 for offering to supply crack cocaine and fraud by false representation.

Until the election was called she served on both the environment committees, and chaired the All-Party Groups on Food Waste and on Sustainable Food and Farming.

She helped set up Feeding Bristol, which has the aim of eradicating food poverty in the city and gave out 53,000 free meals over the summer to children who might otherwise have gone hungry during the long holidays.

Kerry’s other political interests include vulnerable children; she

served on the recent Kinship Care Taskforce and was the first recipient of the Child Poverty Action Group’s MP of the Year Award. In the last parliament she successfully campaigned for life-saving drugs for cystic fibrosis patients on the NHS. She is also campaigning for better mental health provision, and regulation of the supported housing sector.

Locally her main priorities are public transport, affordable housing and investment in schools, social services and NHS.

n NEWS A FISHPONDS school has been praised for making “brave decisions” following an Ofsted report last year saying it required improvement.

The government education watchdog criticised the curriculum at Fishponds Church of England Academy and said it needed to improve in four out of five categories, including quality of teaching and outcomes for pupils.

At the time headteacher Debbie Coker said she was confident the school could get back on track.

Now the school has been praised in a church report for implementing a forwardthinking curriculum which has led to “dramatic” improvements at the school.

This came to light in a SIAMS (Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools) report following a visit by inspector Mike Graham in October.

SIAMS inspect every Church of England and Methodist school in the country every four years, in addition to inspections from

Mr Graham spent a day talking to children, watching collective worship, RE learning and meeting staff and parents.

He described the impact made by the school on the community as “remarkable”, giving an overall good judgement with an excellent rating for its effectiveness of religious education.

He said: “Brave decisions were made in the light of Ofsted’s ‘requires improvement’ verdict in 2018 to pursue an holistic and innovative curriculum… these decisions have been fully justified in that the progress measures from 2019 show dramatic improvements, with national expectations being met and in some cases exceeded.”

“The efforts made by everyone to ensure that each

child has the best possible welcome and every possible barrier to learning removed are remarkable,” the report said.

“It gives the relatively high proportion of pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) very special care and support, and their progress is good overall and in many respects outstanding. Indeed, lives are being transformed through this exemplary work.”

The school's “exemplary” inclusion was among the report's key findings which also included “inspired and committed” Christian leadership from Mrs Coker.

The report went on to say: “Relationships at Fishponds are exceptionally loving, caring and supportive. The report also noted that attendance is now above 95 per cent and rising.

Mrs Coker said: “It is so refreshing to have an inspection that looks at the wider life of a school. The report clearly outlines what makes our school special. I am grateful not only for our amazing staff team who make this happen but also our fantastic army of volunteers - parents, grandparents and members of our local churches - who also serve our children and help to make Fishponds the special place it is.”

A letter to local residents...

The last few years have, politically, been the most difficult since I was first elected to Parliament in 2005. I share your frustrations. Things have to change – and now you have the chance to make your voice heard, by voting on December 12th.

Some people think politicians are out of touch and don’t live in “the real world”. They talk about “the Westminster bubble” or ivory towers. That we’re “all the same” and all in it for ourselves. Maybe that’s true of some. But I couldn’t do my job if I wasn’t rooted in the constituency I’ve been proud to represent for the last 14 years: visiting schools, businesses and community groups; working with residents who want to make things better in their neighbourhood; getting involved in local issues like traffic, planning applications and housing; and seeing people at my surgeries. I love the fact that wherever I go now people stop me to say hello, to tell me what they think, or to ask for help. Or, now that there’s an election on, to express their support - that’s always welcome!

I’ve always tried to be as accessible as possible. It’s important people know what I’ve been up to in Parliament and in Bristol: how I’ve voted, what I’ve said in debates, how busy I’ve been. I want people to feel they can approach me for help, or to share their opinions.

I’ve made clear my stance on Brexit: I support Labour’s policy of putting any deal to a public vote, and I would vote to Remain. I’ve consistently championed environmental issues in Parliament. And, having seen the devastating impact on our schools, police, NHS and social services, I’ve challenged the Tories over their cuts. But there is much more to do.

Despite the frustrations, I still believe that politics can be a force for good. That we can, working together, make Bristol East a great place to live, and a place where no-one is left behind. Your vote really matters at this election. I hope that on December 12th you will once again put your trust in me.

Euro contest is Lenny's latest goal A TEENAGER who has returned from competing in the World Futsal Cup has now set his sights on next year's European championships.

Lenny Johnson, a student at Bristol Metropolitan Academy in Fishponds, is back from Spain after representing GB in the fast paced tournament.

The team faced tough competition, particularly from South American teams Paraguay and Columbia, eventually finishing in ninth place.

The AMF Boys Futsal World Cup took place in Barcelona from October 27 to November 3, with Paraguay taking the top spot.

The championships have given Lenny, who lives in Whitehall, much-needed experience at performing at such a high level and now he is looking ahead to next year's Euro championships.

Futsal is a variant of association football and is played mainly indoors on a hard court, smaller than a football pitch.

It is played between two teams of five players, which include the goalkeeper, and the ball is smaller and harder than a normal football.

Football mad Lenny, pictured right, who is 13, plays for Bristol Futsal and is also a midfielder at Cheltenham Town Academy.

His ultimate ambition is to become a professional footballer, citing his favourite player as Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk.

Dad Reuben, who travelled to Spain with the squad, said: “Lenny played well especially as the team had only met up three or four times before going out there.

“They had a tough group. They beat Switzerland but lost to Paraguay and Columbia before going through to beat Switzerland again and France for ninth place.

“He really enjoyed it and is hoping to take part in the Euro championships in 2020.

That would be good because it was the South American teams who were the strongest.

They had two in their group so it was quite hard. The South Americans were really good – stronger, quicker and technically better.

They were a lot bigger too, physically those Paraguayans looked about 18!

“The team would have been placed higher if they had got into another group so Team GB would likely do well in the European championships.”

People help redesign Railway Path' PEOPLE who use or live near the Bristol and Bath Railway Path have been helping to redesign it.

Transport charity Sustrans has been given £1.1 million to improve the busiest stretch of the path and is inviting everyone from commuter cyclists to pedestrians and wheelchair users to have a say in how problems and conflicts can be sorted.

City councillor Ruth Pickersgill said improvements were needed as some residents no longer felt safe on the path.

In November three community "co-design" workshops were held at venues near the stretch of the path which has been earmarked for improvements, from Whitehall and Easton to St Philip's.

People were asked to suggest ways the path could be improved at five key areas: the bends at Clay Bottom, by Whitehall Primary School, Easton

Community Centre, Russell Town Avenue and the underpass below St Philip's Causeway.

As well as adding suggestions to hands-on maps of the areas, people at the workshops were encouraged to put themselves in the place of other path users.

Sustrans will now take the ideas away and come up with designs which can be refined with the public's help at more workshops, which will take place at the Rose Green Centre in Whitehall from 3.30-7pm on December 9 and at Easton Community Centre from 5-7pm on December 10.

People who cannot make either workshop can give their ideas online at qrco.de/Onepath.

Sustrans has also visited community and interest groups to ask for their input.

Councillor Pickersgill, who represents Easton ward, said: "I have seen the path change over the decades from one that was full of children and families walking, cycling and enjoying the green space, to one where many local residents –particularly those with young children, disabled and older people – are fearful of using it during the busiest times, due to the speed and behaviour of certain cyclists.

"Most local residents I meet feel that the path in Easton is rightly designated as a ‘park’ rather than a ‘highway’ and that we need to find ways to make it feel like that again.

"I would like to see the redesign including signage and infrastructure changes that make it clear it is an urban park and a shared space, and that children

and frail adults may be using it and should be able to do so at their own pace in a safe way.

"I really commend all those who use cycling as their chosen method of transport for environmental reasons and to reduce congestion but I believe, as motorists now have to reduce their speed to 20mph in many built-up areas of Bristol, there should be a low speed limit for cyclists in this part of the path.

"My dream would be that it becomes safe enough for all children to walk, scoot or cycle to their nurseries, children’s centre and schools along the route, thus eliminating the need for all those school-run car journeys that add drastically to air pollution in the area and compromise children’s safety, and that it becomes a truly shared space which the whole wide range of residents in the area feel they can safely use."

n FRIENDS OF EASTVILLE PARK

A welcome for all seasons IT is fascinating to observe the vivid colours of autumn being slowly replaced with the greys and browns that accompany the onset of winter.

The change creates the perfect landscape backdrop for viewing the park’s wildlife.

The rich plumage of the kingfisher or the warm glow of a visiting goldcrest set against the thinning foliage are just a few of the amazing photographs we’ve seen on the Friends group page this month.

For folk who are not able to visit Eastville Park or for those who have moved far away, the photos are a source of wonder and of fond memories that help to create a sense of belonging and being part of the park ‘family’.

Over the coming year, the Friends are looking at some ideas that reach out to those who are unable to access the park, giving those who may be disabled or isolated the chance to explore and enjoy what the rest of us take for granted. We’ll be launching a programme of Community Engagement in the new year that will focus on small, regular activities.

Throughout this last year, volunteers have enabled us to do so much and we’re very much looking forward to building on our successes into 2020. A combination of our own efforts and the support of the new Parks Foundation volunteer co-ordinator has seen a healthy increase in people helping with activities around the park.

We’re excited to have a group of Bristol University students as ‘regulars’ now.

They have been involved with our Santa preparations,

cataloguing our second hand book store and with Parkwork on preparing wildflower beds and bulb planting on the verges.

We’ve just had the last of our pop-up cafes for this year and we’d like to thank everyone who visited and made it such a successful favourite amongst our park users.

A very special mention for June Pugsley, who ran the kitchen with military precision but never failed to create the warm and friendly feel of a home kitchen for the family of helpers! We will be back in 2020.

IT WILL have been hard to miss the publicity for our Santa’s Grotto event on December 8 and we’re all very excited that it’s almost upon us! The change of venue to the Old Bowling Green enables us to have all facilities on site and logistics far more manageable than at the lake. We’d love to have a few more volunteers on the day and we’ll be delighted to accept any offers of homemade soup or cakes right up to the day itself so please get in touch with us at our email address below if you’d like to be part of our Elf family fun!

by Friends’ funds and CIL money from BCC. I was very interested to observe a demonstration of battery powered park maintenance machinery earlier this week. A wide range of mowers and other machines were on display so we may soon see the retirement of the older combustion engine models in our park.

Staying with the topic of environmental impact; our chair, Sarah West attended the Bristol One City event looking at ways that Bristol can adapt and mitigate the impact of climate change.

Our park historians, Mo Lewis and Pam Bush are still working tirelessly putting together a history of the park and are keen to use any material that might help to tell the story. It was a lovely surprise earlier this week to spot on the group

Power blow: Bakery thanks neighbours THE owner of a bakery in Fishponds has thanked neighbours for their support after she was forced to set up a generator outside the shop.

Tracy Phillpott, who runs Cottage Bakery in Downend Road, was left without electricity after her supplier cut her off in a case of mistaken identity.

She had no choice but to install a generator in order to keep the business going until the dispute could be settled and normal power resumed.

However, the machine has upset several neighbours who complained about the smoke coming from it.

Tracy said she has been without power since the middle of October: “I had no way of baking that night ready for the next day. I have 50 to 60 wholesale suppliers so I couldn't let them down.

“I would have had to shut down the business and leave everyone around here without a

bakery.”

Tracey, who also runs a bakers shop in Chipping Sodbury also called Cottage Bakery, knew it wasn't an ideal solution but wasn't prepared for some of the criticism she received.

“I had one person who tried to turn the machine off - that's vandalism. It has thankfully been

the minority as I have had lots of people coming in to give me support.”

One neighbour was so understanding she took to the Fishponds Voice Facebook group Greater Fishponds News and Views to explain the full story.

Tracy said: “The neighbours in the house next door have been

so understanding and patient.

They were so cross at people coming in the shop and shouting at me that they posted a message explaining what had happened and how it wasn't my fault. They explained to people that if I hadn't installed the generator I wouldn't have a business.”

Tracy said she is now hoping the electricity supplier would get the matter sorted as a matter of urgency.

“I've now got around the issue of the smoke by adding a chimney and an additive to the tank so there is no smoke now.

“It's a silent generator so noise isn't an issue – our fridges inside make more noise.

“I don't want the generator there as much as anyone else doesn't. It's all above board and the council is happy with what I am doing. I am working hard to resolve the issue. I'd like to thank everyone for their support and patience and I will endeavour to get things sorted asap.”

Schools get into film to improve learning TEACHERS in two primary schools in Fishponds are learning how to use film in the classroom to improve children's reading and writing.

Chester Park Junior School and Fishponds Church of England Academy are among ten Bristol schools who have signed up for Film for Learning.

As part of the four-year project, teachers are being trained how to use film clips and film-related activities in the classroom, use film-related texts to improve reading and writing, and teach children how to make short films.

The project has been devised by national film education charity Into Film and supported by local industry body Bristol City of Film, education charity Paul Hamlyn Foundation, city media company Boomsatsuma and the city council.

Teachers learn new ways that film can be used to help learning other teachers from each school is being trained as part of the four-year programme. They will share what they have learned with colleagues.

Bristol UNESCO City of Film Coordinator Natalie Moore said: “Weaving film into the education experience from an early age has been proven to be fantastically beneficial for young people, so I’m very excited that Bristol

schoolchildren will be receiving this experience.

"Film for Learning has been one of our key priorities from the outset, as embedding creativity into education is a key objective for the UNESCO Creative Cities Network."

Boomsatsuma creative projects manager Lyndsay Davies said: “The aim is to empower teachers to embed film

resources into their everyday literacy practices. With such engaging and diverse resources available, we hope the project will see students more active in their learning and inspired to know more about film.

"It’s also fantastic that we have such a wide cross section of schools across the city. One key aspect of the project’s development is that resources and learning will be disseminated to wider school communities. This will allow more Bristol schools to benefit from the project and make the outcomes even more meaningful."

Into Film learning coordinator Nichola Clarke said: “We’re looking forward to seeing a positive impact on the literacy and digital literacy skills of pupils from the 10 schools in the Bristol area."

How city's diesel ban could affect you THE streets covered by Bristol's planned diesel ban and clean air charging zone have been confirmed.

The Voice reported last month that the city council had decided to put forward two schemes to cut pollution in the city.

The first was a ban on all privately-owned diesel vehicles in an area around the Centre, Broadmead, Redcliffe and the Harbourside between 7am and 3pm, seven days a week.

The second was a clean air zone (CAZ) where more polluting commercial vehicles would be charged a daily fee of between £9 and £100 to enter an area including parts of Easton, St Philip's, St Paul's and Montpelier. Drivers of commercial vehicles who had paid to enter the CAZ could also drive through the central diesel ban zone.

The Fishponds area is not included in either zone. But the RAC has warned that drivers trying to avoid them could start looking for new routes.

Drivers of diesel cars would have to leave the inbound M32 at Easton junction 3, where it meets Easton Way and Lower Ashley Road, as the ban zone extends for the length of Newfoundland Street. It means diesel cars would not be allowed to access the Cabot Circus car park.

Private diesel cars would also be banned from Bond Street, Temple Way, Redcliffe Way and the A420 Old Market Street, inside the Midland Road junction.

The boundary of the CAZ for commercial vehicles would follow the railway line between Stapleton Road and Lawrence Hill stations through Easton, with the bottom

end of Stapleton Road, Easton Road, the Lawrence Hill roundabout and St Philip's Causeway inside it.

The final plan is due to be submitted to government in February 2020, and the deadline for implementation is March 2021.

The council has estimated that the plan will bring down the city’s nitrogen dioxide levels to within legal limits by 2025.

Members of Bristol City Council’s overview and scrutiny management board raised concerns that many drivers would skirt around the edges of each zone to avoid paying charges and penalties, pushing traffic congestion, parking problems and dangerous exhaust fumes outside the city centre.

Councillor Clive Stevens (Green, Clifton Down) said: “If we have a scheme that…is just pushing the dirty air around, that is not going to save lives at all.”

The RAC said the proposed diesel car ban would have an “unprecedented” impact on drivers of diesel vehicles.

Head of roads policy Nicholas Lyes said: “Major routes into, out of, and even around the city would become out of bounds, with diesel vehicles forced onto other roads, which risks causing congestion problems where they don’t exist at the moment.”

Anaesthesia in my pet – what happens?

A

NAESTHESIA has come a long way in the past 2 centuries with modern techniques being quite

safe.

Anaesthesia in veterinary patients is carried out on a daily basis and has many aspects to it. Our key goals are to provide excellent pain relief, eliminate awareness (make them unconscious) and relax their muscles whilst making it as stress free for our patients as possible!

The Journey: Patients are always health checked prior to an anaesthetic.

Sometimes we take a blood sample to check organ function.

It is important, particularly in older patients, as the liver and kidneys are involved with drug elimination.

We then give a pre-medication injection. It usually has 1 or 2 different types of pain relief plus a

sedative. We then place a cannula (IV line) into a vein and proceed to full anaesthesia by injecting a drug directly into the blood stream.

When they are asleep we put an endo-tracheal tube into their airway so we can move them to a gaseous anaesthetic. They are closely monitored for any changes to their heart or breathing rate/ pattern, oxygenation or blood pressure which requires a change in the anaesthetic dose or top up of pain relief.

When it is time to wake them up, we turn off the anaesthetic gas and move them to a warm kennel and monitor them closely. Once they are awake we will give them food and water and phone their owner with an update.

War memorial unveiled at rugby ground A WAR memorial honouring the lives of 62 men who lost their lives in the First World War has been unveiled at the Frenchay home of Dings Crusaders RFC. The tribute is in memory of members of the Shaftesbury Crusade, a Christian mission based in St Philips which led to the establishment of the rugby club.

The 62 men were among the 346 from the mission, set up to encourage young people from the Dings to take part in sport, who fought during the war.

The sandstone memorial was donated by the Sanigar family in memory of their brother Mike, a stalwart member of Dings Crusaders RFC. A service, conducted by former Dings player Rev Trevor Denley, took place during the unveiling on Saturday November 16, prior to the Dings home game against Taunton Titans.

Lees and Penny Bennett, the granddaughters of Dings Crusaders founder H.W. (Herbert William) Rudge, with around twenty relatives of those listed on the memorial in attendance.

A two-course lunch for the rugby club’s guests and supporters followed directly after the unveiling.

Derek Gunningham arranged for a mason to make the new memorial out of grey pennant sandstone with black lettering.

In 2018 Dings Crusaders RFC moved from their Lockleaze home of 70 years to a new purpose-built sport facility at Frenchay, named Shaftesbury Park in recognition of the club’s origins.

n NEWS A CARE worker has won recognition for her work with residents who are living with dementia.

Karolina Nowadczyk, a team leader at Brunelcare's Deerhurst care home in Soundwell, took home the Dignity in Care accolade at The Great British Care Awards.

Karolina said: “To be nominated for the Dignity in Care Award is very special to me, but to have won the award is a dream come true! I work really hard to maintain the dignity of residents living with dementia and it’s something I’m extremely passionate about. It's great to know that all my hard work is paying off.”

This was the first of two accolades for Bristol-based charity Brunelcare - Daniella Masarque, who works at Robinson House care home in Stockwood, won an award for Best Activity Coordinator at The Care & Support West Awards.

Award for dementia carer Centre's appeal

RESIDENTS are being invited to come and help shape the future of the Meadow Vale Community Association.

The charity holds its annual meeting on Monday December 16 at 1pm and is inviting people to come along, become members, volunteers and put forward ideas for the coming year.

People will also be able to find out more about the long-awaited plans to expand the Meadow Vale Community Centre.

The project has been awarded £200,000 by the city council to extend the building by building a hall behind it. The new centre would be able to hold up to 100 people instead of 35, providing a meeting place for young people and community groups, and could also feature a cafe.

Love Saves The Day move to Ashton Court confirmed ORGANISERS of the Love Saves The Day festival have confirmed its intended new home after it leaves Eastville Park next year.

The dance music festival is set to move across Bristol to the Ashton Court estate, where it will be able to almost double its capacity.

Organisers have secured a licence to bring nearly 40,000 revellers to Ashton Court in 2021.

They say planning is still in the early stages but they already have the backing of North Somerset Council, which is the licensing authority for the estate.

Bristol City Council, which owns Ashton Court, will also have to give its permission but a licence was granted on November 22 after North Somerset Council environmental health officers' concerns over staging the festival at Ashton Court were resolved.

Love Saves The Day has been in the 23,000-capacity Eastville Park since 2015 but organisers confirmed in September that next year's event will be their last there. They did not comment on reasons for the move but the new venue will allow 17,000 more attendees each day.

Tickets for the final festival in Eastville Park, which takes place on May 23 and 24 next year, went on sale on October 3 - and the first two releases of weekend and day tickets have already sold out.

The new licence allows festivals to be held at Ashton Court estate during the spring bank holiday in 2021, 2022 and 2023 between 11am and 11pm on the Saturday and Sunday, with 10 to 12 live bands each day.

In a recent statement, Tom Paine, one of the directors of Love Saves The Day, said: “All our focus right now is on Eastville Park for 2020 and making sure that next year’s show is the best one yet.”

n THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH

Are you feeling Christmassy yet?

“IT’S snowing!” came the shout up the stairs one morning in middle of November. Really? I thought, thinking the squeal of delight was slightly optimistic. But as I drew back the curtain, the snow was certainly falling on Fishponds.

The expectation that the snow might stick around for long was probably not going to be met, but nevertheless it did feel “Christmassy”.

“Christmassy” – is a word which requires a lot of unpacking.

It’s a word that is generally banned in our household until December 1st, and there is a fierce debate as to which films are “Christmas Ones”. “Christmassy” can mean a whole host of things for different people. Some people I know LOVE IT – they love everything about this season from the buying to the receiving, the end of year parties and celebrations. Some love the lights and the tinsel, the carols and the nativities, the mulled wine and

the mince pies. I am one of those people. I do love Christmas -which is a fortunate thing in my job.

Christmas can also be a difficult and hard time for people.

It can be lonely or bring back difficult memories. It can be stressful and the cause of many a family argument. The colder months can be difficult to manage and the dark nights can mean people are wary of venturing out as much. For some it can be a painful reminder of people who have died or who are no longer very near by. Christmas is above all complex.

Yet at the heart of Christmas is a story which the world has listened to for over 2000 years.

Sometimes that is told in the form of plays with small people, sometimes it is sung by the most majestic of choirs, sometimes it is whispered in the depths of our souls as we gaze into a candle in the middle of the night. For Christians it is the most

formidable story of God. A God who was found in a vulnerable tiny chid. A child who then had to flee to Egypt to escape the fury of Herod. It is the transformative story of hope, because it makes the bold claim that God comes to know and share the very life that we have as human beings. A God we might come to know a little about, because God knows a little of what it is to be one of us. That is a remarkable and bold claim.

The next few weeks leading up to Christmas are also set aside in the Christian pattern of life – a time of Advent – when each day is marked in time by a calendar.

Most Advent calendars now have a tiny chocolate behind each window – a little reminder of the treats which might come on the 25th. They help to build the sense of climax and expectation.

I try and read a little of the Christmas story each day when opening the windows, it has become a bit of a tradition –

Yet it is a glimpse, a moment set aside just to haul me back to the reality of what Christmas is about, and what it points to in this world. A God who made the most audacious gift. Cricket club earns national accolade FRENCHAY Cricket Club has received national recognition for its work coaching players.

It was named Coaching Club of the Year at the 2019 ECB Coach Awards.

Having been shortlisted for the award, representatives from the club were invited to attend a black tie dinner at Ashbridge House in Hertfordshire in November, along with club coaches from all over the country.

Also in attendance were England director of cricket Ashley Giles, former chairman of selectors David Graveney and other past and present England coaches.

Youth chairman Matt Hunkin said: “We cater for over 200 boys and girls, along with other members of our community, including our disability squad the Frenchay Falcons.

"To receive a national award for our coaching set-up is a

reflection of the tremendous effort put in by the many volunteers who contribute in so many different ways."

One of the things that sets Frenchay apart is the degree to which they support coaches through coach education.

Over the last four years, 13 coaches from the club have achieved ECB Level 2 coaching qualifications, which could not have been done without a lot of hard work and invaluable support from South Gloucestershire Council and the Gloucestershire Cricket Board.

Matt added: “To see our ground full of happy young cricketers on a Friday evening suggests that we are doing something right.

“And with 23 junior members playing senior cricket last season and the same number representing Gloucestershire at various age-groups the future of the club looks bright.”

Frenchay Christmas Tree Farm celebrates 20 years

A

S the picture shows, Father Christmas visited Frenchay Christmas Tree Farm in person this year, during his relaxing summer holiday. He came to wish the Christmas tree growers a very happy anniversary: 20 years of growing and cutting Christmas trees. Not only did he hand out presents to a few lucky children, he also remarked how beautiful the trees were.

“Thousands of trees! Enough for everyone!”

Having started out as a fairly modest concern of 6,000 trees in 1999, production has steadily increased to 35,000 trees to date, hoping to rise to 40,000 trees by 2021. So there really is plenty for all. For the growers, Peter and Simon Maughan, it has also been a gradual learning experience. “We pick up a lot of tips and techniques from our colleagues at the British Christmas Tree Growers Association, but often we just learn the hard way – when things go wrong! Flooding in 2012, plagues of aphids in 2009, and drought in 2018. In each case we weather the storm and adapt accordingly.”

“One thing that I am particularly proud about,” explains Simon, “Is that we have stayed true to our environmental principles.” The farm was set up in 1999 with wildlife in mind. “While we are focused mainly on growing excellent Christmas Trees, I estimate that perhaps as much

as 60% of our land is not covered by tree foliage, and it is in places like these – in the hedgerows and in the spaces between trees – that native wildlife can exist.”

“With over 97% of the UK’s wildflower meadows lost since the 1930s, it is important that we do what we can to conserve these habitats. We mow between the trees, rather than spray with weedkiller, which allows wildflowers to grow, and we have a lot of insect and animal life as a result.”

2019 looks to be a promising year for Frenchay Christmas Tree Farm. The warm wet summer has boosted growth, producing fullbodied trees with good foliage, and the general appearance of the trees is very good. Most excitingly, a new fully biodegradable Christmas tree net will be on trial. The first of its kind, it will be a huge step towards keeping the farm free of plastic.

n PLANNING WITH CHRIS GOSLING

Future directions ALTHOUGH you may not be inspired or energised by it, you have probably noticed that a General Election is on the horizon. If you are reading this in the second half of the month, you will know the result (if any) but I am writing this in a state of November ignorance. It is an important time for the country, with the apparent opportunity to move in one of two directions.

The divergence between the two major parties also seems likely to have a big impact on planning. On one level, everyone is talking about increasing the supply of housing, although the emphasis on how affordable it would be is relatively absent from the camp with the blue rosettes. This has been the stock response to the lack of affordable housing, as if increasing supply has a simple relationship to price. Affordability has become an ever more important issue over a decade where wages have largely stagnated while house prices have

rocketed.

Making fewer headlines is what will happen to what I recently heard being called‚ very aptly "the shadow planning system“.

This title covers the range of changes that have been made to permitted development. Some of these require some details to be submitted instead of a full application, although the principle of the permission has already been made before that slimmed down application goes in. You may recall that the local case that I usually quote is Beacon Tower, the former DHSS building at the end of Lodge Causeway.

It is worth putting this shadow planning system into context. Many measures were introduced to bring about increased housing supply.

Over the period of 2014-18 the changes have led to the provision of 88,000 dwellings, without one planning application submitted. At the same time, although boosting housing stock at the cheaper end of the market, none of them have actually been affordable, because that can only negotiated as part of a planning permission. Affordable housing, simply put, is normally

provided for sale or rent through a housing association, where the price is kept below free market value. Whether you are concerned about the headlines of some of these being akin to rabbit hutches and extensions looming over neighbouring houses and gardens or not, the 88,000 figure speaks for itself, as does the timescale.

The downside of lack of planning scrutiny is seen as either collateral damage or undermining the reputation of planning among the general public. It is a result of politicians making decisions that they are fully entitled to make as our elected representatives. I wonder if there is any connection with the lack of esteem that politicians are currently held in. But with the moves to the right and left of the major parties what does that hold in store?

Labour are talking about reversing this shadow planning system that has grown up since the start of the coalition. The Conservatives seem more likely to de-regulate further, either moving more development into this grey area or simply making more development free from planning

oversight altogether. An idea that has been doing the rounds for 5 years is removing planning scrutiny for two storey, then reduced to one storey, now possibly two storey again extensions on top of existing houses. The complexity of the scope of this is possibly what has held the government back to date. Would this mean flats above houses, in which case how would access to them be achieved? A recent idea put forward is that councils should produce specific design guidance for such extensions so that adding another storey or two would be in keeping with the house and street. To date the implications and mitigation that would be required to facilitate this de-regulation has held up implementation of this idea. What lies in store for the future of planning, along with so much else, will be determined by voters. What seems likely however is that the next changes coming down the track are going to be radical changes. Always assuming of course that the politicians do what they promise.

Panto treat for young carers – oh yes it is!

A CAMPAIGN has been launched by a Fishponds charity to bring some Christmas magic into the lives of young carers by treating them to a visit to a pantomime.

Carers Support Centre has set up a JustGiving page which aims to raise £1,390 for 20 youngsters to watch Dick Whittington at the Bristol Hippodrome.

The charity, based at the Vassall Centre in Gill Avenue, works with young people in Bristol and South Gloucestershire who care for family members at home.

Often their responsible role has a huge impact on their lives and can cause stress and depression as they struggle to juggle life at home with the demands of school and friendship circles. The centre helps by organising activities and workshops, giving youngsters the chance to meet others in the same situation.

Kama McKenzie, young carers service manager, said: “Caring is a huge responsibility that should only ever be expected of an adult.

Young carers do a fantastic job of caring for someone at home, but it has a big impact on a young life. Young carers struggle to keep up with schoolwork, are often bullied, and suffer with anxiety and depression.

“The trip is a chance for young carers to take a much-

needed break from their caring responsibilities and meet other young carers.

“This is the first time we’ve fundraised for the young carers’ pantomime using a JustGiving fundraiser. We’ve obtained funding through other means previously so are trying something new this year. Last year a group of young carers went to see the Cinderella at Bristol Hippodrome and the year before they saw Aladdin.

“Christmas can be a difficult

time for young carers, so this opportunity to connect with other young people in a similar situation and take some time out at the panto is so important to them. Without these funds, going to the pantomime would not be possible for them. Activities like this that allow them to just be a child are crucial for their wellbeing.”

A carer is someone who provides unpaid support to family or friends who could not manage without their help. This could be caring for a relative, partner or friend who is ill, frail, disabled or has mental health or substance misuse problems.

There are 40,138 carers in Bristol - or 13.5 per cent of the population - and 27,639 carers in South Gloucestershire, which is 14.7 per cent of the population.

Morgan is boxing club's latest champ

TEENAGER Morgan Baber has become the latest member of Downend Boxing Club to win a national boxing title.

The 16-year-old won through the England Boxing development championship rounds to the final which took place at the Spiceball Leisure Centre, Oxfordshire on October 27.

Morgan, who trains at the club's base in the Harry Crook centre, Fishponds, forced the pace against the taller Manisha Sanghera of Newcastle.

From the first bell Morgan threw an effective straight right hand, the classic answer to a southpaw boxer which prompted two protection counts from the referee in the all-action, threeround contest.

Taking a unanimous points decision, Morgan said afterwards: "I'm so, so happy.

"Thank you so much to everyone who’s supported me, and a massive thank-you to my Downend coaches for helping me

Morgan will now work towards the England Boxing open National Championships later in the season.

She won her place in the final courtesy of a semi-final win over Elizabeth Dunster of Evolve boxing club of Buckinghamshire in Swindon a week previously.

to give her opponent two protection counts, before taking a unanimous decision to win herself a place in the finals.

That bout came shortly after Morgan had represented Western Counties against an Irish side from County Mayo.

Taking on the vastly more experienced Irish international Aimee Carey, Morgan went for her taller opponent from

the first bell and scored some quality shots. But the Mayo girl’s experience came to the fore with skilful movement and using her long reach to land eye-catching blows, although she admitted afterwards that the contest was her hardest yet.

Former Downend boxers Jake and Ben Demmery have turned professional.

The twins, from Yate, made successful pro debuts under the Chris Sanigar stable at Whitchurch Sports Centre.

Ben and Jake had been with Downend for 12 years, amassing 120 bouts between them.

Born 6 minutes apart and 9 weeks early, the 23-year-old twins and unsurprisingly have always been close.

Although they are now looking to build careers in the sport there is one match they will always turn down - they have vowed never to fight each other.

Finally, we’re in our new home

W

E all know what’s it like when we find that dream property. You get an excited tingle and can’t wait to move in and make the place your own.

Well, it seems to have taken an age since I first thought about shifting our chiropractic business to just across the road in Mangotsfield. The old church school house in Cossham Street, built in the 1850s, needed a generous dose of TLC and a complete facelift really, to transform it into a bright new modern workspace.

Yes, there have been times when I thought the venture was completely mad and there’s been plenty of pitfalls and problems along the way. Sleepless nights, worrying about the new clinic, became all too familiar.

But now, eight months later and thanks to the hard work from a whole of host people connected with Cleve Chiropractic, we’re

up and running. And there’s definitely no looking back over our shoulders.

Since we opened the doors of the new clinic a week or so ago, I’ve known it was absolutely the right thing to do. But don’t take my word for it – the feedback we’ve had from patients and visitors has been amazing.

Everyone’s been impressed with our new space, where there’s more room for the latest in new equipment, from treatment beds to fitness facilities – and everything in between. We now have more treatment and consulting rooms to help keep you healthy and in better shape.

It’s the perfect place for all our chiropractors, physiotherapists and sport therapists to do what they do best – look after our patients.

We’ve added to our portfolio of expertise, too, with a new podiatry and chiropody service.

Pilates classes are already taking place in our new studio and

there’ll be yoga following soon. It’s all geared up to make our visitors feel “at home” in our new home and to have a fresh spring in their step when they leave us.

You may have heard that one of our first “patients” was something of a prickly customer… just a couple of days before we opened, our team of builders came across Hector the hedgehog curled up in the corner of one of the treatment rooms!

He probably thought it was the perfect place for his winter hibernation as it was so warm and welcoming. As much as we all love our local wildlife, we knew Hector couldn’t stay. I took advice from a vet I know and released him back into his normal habitat.
