Respiration and Circulation Lab You will work in groups of 23 students on this lab activity, but everyone should complete their own labs to be turned in.

Procedure: 1 .Make sure you have a partner and a watch. 2. Measure your resting heart rate by counting the number of pulses in 30 second. 3. Walk down the hallway at a pace of approximately one step/second. Have your partner count off the seconds. 4. Measure your heart rate immediately after walking down the hallway. Measure your heart rate. 5. Wait five minutes and measure the resting heart rate again. 6. Run up two flights of stairs as fast as you can and measure your heart rate when you reach the top. 7. Wait five minutes and measure your resting heart rate. 8. If the weather is at least 5 degrees different from the temperature in your classroom, walk outside and walk around the building. You should remain outside for about 4 minutes. Measure your heart rate to see how temperature affected it inside and outside. 9. Wait five minutes and measure your resting heart rate. Can you think of anything else that might affect your heart rate? Check with the teacher first and then try out your own hypothesis. Note: One person must do all of the exercising to obtain consistent results. Graph: Create a graph to show how activities affect heart rates. Be sure to label your axis and provide a title. Create a bar graph with heart rates on the yaxis and the activities on the xaxis. You should plot the peak heart rate for each activity and make a bar for the resting heart rate next to each peek heart rate. Questions: 1. How did the activities performed in lab affect your heart rate? 2. Can you think of any other activities that would affect heart rates? 3. Think about all of the activities that you perform in one day. When do you think your heart rate is the lowest? 4. What kind of heart rate would people in good health have? Why?
