Using 6 western-themed lessons, youth learn they are not powerless against bullies. The chains and component parts are made in the U.S. The chains and paint meet CPSIA lead requirements for children. Less expensive chains are on the market, but many rust, create skin discoloration at the wear site and have a poorer quality appearance. They are not as durable. BenchMARKS for Multiplication Tables (0 to 12) This innovation of the BenchMARKS (suggested by your colleagues) permits you to acknowledge pupils’ skills in learning their basic Times Tables. It is a classic example of benchmarks. For example, mastering a particular number, let’s say 6, is one step in the benchmark process. (6 x 0 = 0, 6 x 1 = 6, 6 x 2 = 12 etc.) When a number is mastered, a child is awarded that benchmark number. If an entire set of numbers 0 –12 is purchased, that means a child could potentially receive a BenchMARK for each of the “Times Table” numbers they master–13 in all.

SpeedStacking Some are using BenchMARKS numbers and Numbers 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 for Speed Stacking endeavors and challenges. Speed Stackers receive one of these numbers when they reach a certain goal. The various colors are also used for the different challenges of Speed Stacking. In the beginning, Numbers 30, 25, 20 and 15 are used. But as things get cooking, the BenchMARKS of 12, 11, 10, etc., are coveted. Young people love to show “how low they can go.”

The Challenge Series permits young people to participate in a one-half to one mile run/walk or, on occasion, longer distances. Participation and completion are the focus. The Challenge Series encourages young people to set a goal of walking/running a speciﬁed distance. Challenge Series 2 This run/walk program for youth combines additional imaginative monthly events and accompanying awards for enhanced physical activity. Challenge Series 2 is an outgrowth of Challenge Series® 1. While Challenge Series 2 follows a similar format to Challenge Series 1, it gives you greater flexibility and permits you to select 1 to 13 different fun-runs. For example, you may only want to launch Fall Foliage Fun Run.

The original Mileage Club Challenge Series (pp. 20-21) includes 9 runs and awards, as well as tons of helpful information on how to conduct fun runs at schools, clubs, youth agencies and in communities. The Challenge Series Kit 2 contains 13 supplemental fun runs based on Monthly Motivators™ 2 awards. These awards are shown on the next page and described on page 19. Walk for the Children of Kenya ™

The program’s aim (started some three years ago) was to help provide clean water to schools in the country of Haiti. This was to be accomplished by providing inexpensive, yet highly-effective ﬁlters to schools to curb salmonella, e-coli and more. As they say “the idea went viral”. This year we are focusing efforts on schools in Kenya.

In the fall of 2009 we launched Walk for Water for children in Haiti. The program’s mission was to have U.S. and Canadian children, when they walked for better health and performance, also raise money for school water filters in 53 Haitian schools. The idea caught fire and in an extremely short period of time a substantial amount of money was raised. Groups contributed mightily to water filters for schools. Thank you. The initiative was so successful, however, that the dollars contributed far exceeded the Haiti staff ’s capability of providing and training people to use the filters. Currently there is a back log on delivery and installation. Consequently, we are placing the Haiti effort on hold as the staff plays “catch-up”.” New Horizons Not wanting to diminish the enthusiasm for Walk for Water, we have decided to assist Kenya for the next few years. Upon talking with a representative from Kenya, there is a pressing need for filters to create drinkable water in schools and homes. Currently, almost every home or school boils its water. The result is precious money spent for charcoal, time and labor. Sadly, it also means polluting the environment and deforesting the land. Kenya looks fine now, but in time trees will be stripped bare of leaves and environmental degradation will follow. Kenya and its people need filters. The Land of Marathoners As you know, Kenya is a land that has produced some of the world’s greatest long distance runners. Mileage Club is helping train America’s future runners. The goal is to provide water filters for schools and homes. Each filter costs $50 (including shipping, duty and installation). These Sawyer filters have been proven to be the most cost-effective way of curbing salmonella, e-coli and more. To stimulate this humanitarian effort, we will match dollar-for-dollar, up to $5,000, any U.S. or Canadian school/classroom that contributes $50 to ICCM* via Mileage Club®, Lift-A-Ton® or Challenge Series® fund raiser (your choice). Help shape great future citizens. Simple to implement and effective in developing strong character traits in youth. The Character Bound program delivers on what its title proclaims “Helping Children Be Character Bound!”

Works: Character Bound is designed so that: Students receive new Character Bound lessons each year. All grades study the same character classiﬁcation of traits each year. In Year 1 the entire school learns about: Kindness. Grades 1-3 receive the lower level Kindness lessons; grades 4-6 receive the upper level Kindness lessons. In Year 2, the entire school learns Integrity. In Year 3, everyone learns Citizenship. This same pattern is repeated every three years, so teachers only teach three modules. Each program module is a one-month program (preferably at the start of a school year or semester) highlighting one character trait per week.

Z Paws for Reading

Actual Size Our Paw Print school staff members have told us that the use of Paw Prints has stimulated children to read more by emphasizing Paws for Reading—nice. These schools have been using our basic, traditional 8 school colors of the Paw Print to encourage children to read more frequently and widely. The Paw Prints are awarded for points scored in reading (Accelerated Reading), number of books read (Book-It®), number of minutes read (I ♥ to Read™), genre of books read and more! In some schools, when a child enters the program they receive a Paw Print of one of the school’s colors. When a child reaches appropriate achievements or goals, other awards are presented. At the achievement of the eighth goal or level, the child receives the other school color.
