Hairstyles change with the seasons and there are always countless options to comb through. But don’t worry. We caught up with Sanjay Ramcharan, a top stylist belonging to the A-list of haute coiffure, to talk about cool hairstyles, beard maintenance and how to get a Mad Men cut.
SWINGING SIXTIES
The hair of the moment is a rugged, less coiffed take on the dandyish Mad Men look. ‘The slick side parts of the 60’s are truly back, but with a modern splash. Think of really short sides with roughly blown-back long tops and razored hairlines to highlight the side part. Shades of blond or brown hair colors with a matte finish can add an extra edgy vibe. But don’t overdo. Effortless cool is key’, explains Sanjay. When it comes to grooming, beards are the real deal. If you are inspired to rock one of your own, then make sure to keep it classy and fashionable. You don’t need to look like you’ve been living in the backwoods to meet the trend. Sanjay: ‘When sporting facial hair I recommend to stick with either some heavy ‘10-day’ stubbles or a well trimmed beard. And you’ll need the right tools. A clipper with multiple length settings or a pair of facial hair-scissors are essential for easy maintenance. And when trimming your beard, don’t edge it up or anything like that. WHAT DO YOU (TH)INK? Once a mark of rebellion for bikers, rockers and punks, now entered the mainstream. Tattoos are as desired and admired as an iPhone, a Nike Running shoe or one of those mountain-man beards. Soon it will be harder to find someone without a tattoo than with a tattoo. The tattoos people get will always vary regionally, culturally, across lines of gender etc. Whatever the case, a heart with ‘mom’ in it, anchors or other images chosen of the wall aren’t exactly a hot-ticket item today. And so are tribals and armbands dying down a lot. 32
So what’s trending in the ink industry these days? The trend is definitely custom stuff. A tattoo should be personal and represent how you feel about something, about your family or your life. They are, as much as they can be, unique and stand out from the crowd. Popular ‘new school’ tattoos are abstract, with bold colour and a lot of contrast, with a semi-realism style. Script-, letteringand quote tattoos are also on trend right now, just as skulls and symbols. Men are
getting their tattoos mostly on the chest, shoulders and arms (sleeves), but also hands and knuckles are really picking up. Everything considered, getting a tattoo is a serious decision. Scott Campbell, personal inker of Marc Jacobs, advises how to prep for the needle: ‘The best way to prepare is to not overthink it. When people don’t have that many tattoos, they feel like they have to summarize their entire identity into one symbol, which is way too much responsibility for one design. Just take a deep breath, clear your mind, and get what feels good.
