The Britton District Building Survey 2019 Fall Semester Conducted by Students in Historic Preservation Planning En D 4893 (SERV), RCPL 5893, ARCH 5970 (SERV) Christopher C. Gibbs College of Architecture The University of Oklahoma NOTE: The class collaborated with the staff of the City of Oklahoma City Planning Department. Selected buildings in this district were based on those deemed to be “contributing buildings” in the “Survey Report, Intensive-Level Survey of Historic Britton Commercial District 2019.” The work in this course is meant to complement the previous survey work using Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps references, historic photographs, and current photographs, if available. Historic information was very hard to find for this area. We concentrated on the Route 66 years of the area when there was significant development, prosperity, and business. These years are from March 3, 1936, to March 2, 1953. The building is one story tall. Dimensions are 25’ wide and 50’ deep with a 4’ metal awning overhang on the front facade The building consists of light red, bark-faced brick with three decorative row blocks occurring periodically above the awning. The storefront has two large, aluminum frame curtain windows recessed by 6” on each side of a large, metal door at the center of the façade. There are four windows in total. A single metal awning spans over the entire windowfront and door with a colorful address sign at the center. Windowsills are cast stone inside but covered in metal outside. The building includes two raised parapets with cast stone caps, one on each side of the storefront. Between the parapets, the edge of the roof is lined with a metal cover. The storefront is labeled with a repurposed metal enamel sign that has been on the building at least since the mid-1940s. This uniquely shaped sign used to have a white border and neon lettering that spelled out “Britton Bakery.” Now the sign is completely black with the logo for the current business, Hideout Art, on each side; a new neon border lines the sign in pink, green, orange, blue, and purple. Currently, there are repurposed materials throughout the entire building from Gatewood Elementary School, including the wood floors, wood paneling, cabinetry, coat rack, soap dispenser, vanity, chalkboard, doors, and ventilation pipes. Inside, the ceiling is sloped with exposed beams; the walls consist of partially exposed tile and brick face with plaster, all painted white. The building consists mostly of one large, open room but also has a storage room and bathroom in the back. Between these two rooms is a hallway leading to the outside patio and deck behind the building.
