What’s On

Welcome to the Fitzwilliam Museum’s Summer 2012 programme of events

欢 迎 This summer the Museum will present its most ambitious exhibition to date, The Search for Immortality: Tomb Treasures of Han China. A core element of the Cultural Olympiad and a London 2012 Festival event, the exhibition will feature the most important group of Han royal treasures ever to leave China. Contemporary with the late Republic and early Empire of ancient Rome, the Han Dynasty represents one of the highpoints of Chinese art and civilisation, displayed here in works of exquisite craftsmanship and beauty. The Search for Immortality has been organised by the Fitzwilliam Museum and will be seen exclusively in Cambridge.

generating unprecedented press coverage and critical acclaim. It is very pleasing to see once again that it is not only in London that important exhibitions can attract such significant national and international attention. Recently installed on the front lawns of the Museum is the third Fitzwilliam Sculpture Promenade, featuring large-scale works by internationally acclaimed sculptors Helaine Blumenfeld, Peter RandallPage and Kan Yasuda, all of whom have worked in the Italian sculpture centre of Pietrasanta near the famous marble quarries at Carrara. This Promenade will be on display until January 2013. Other exhibitions to enjoy over the coming months include Edgelands: Prints by George Shaw and Michael Landy, Designed to Impress: Highlights from the print collection, and Ceramic Art, Craft

The Han exhibition comes on the heels of Vermeer’s Women, which proved an outstanding success on all levels, setting a new attendance record of over 150,000 visitors and

and Tales from Medieval Cyprus, drawn from the collection of the Leventis Municipal Museum of Nicosia, Cyprus. Finally, some of you may be aware from media reports that I will be leaving the Fitzwilliam to take up the directorship of the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles in September. By that time I shall have been at the Fitzwilliam for nearly five years, which I consider a great privilege. In the meantime the programme at the Fitzwilliam remains as busy as ever and will certainly keep me, and all of the staff here, fully engaged.

Exhibitions

Featuring over 350 treasures in jade, gold, silver, bronze and ceramics, The Search for Immortality is the largest and most important exhibition of ancient royal treasures ever to travel outside China. The pioneering exhibition compares the spectacular tombs of two rival power factions: the Han imperial family in the northern ‘cradle’ of Chinese history, and the Kingdom of Nanyue in the south. Discover their quest for immortality and struggle for imperial legitimacy in ancient China’s Han Dynasty, which established the basis for unified rule of China up to the present day.

The Search for Immortality: Tomb Treasures of Han China has been made possible through the generous permission of China’s State Administration for Cultural Heritage, Art Exhibitions China, Xuzhou Museum and the Museum of the Mausoleum of the Nanyue Kings. The exhibition is part of the London 2012 Festival. Look out for the special exhibition and events leaflet, available from May.

Major support for the exhibition has been provided by

Exhibitions Edgelands Prints by George Shaw and Michael Landy

Designed to Impress: Highlights from the print collection

Ceramic Art, Craft and Tales from Medieval Cyprus

27 March – 23 September Shiba Gallery (14)

3 April – 7 October Charrington Print Room (16)

3 July – 23 September Cyprus Gallery (Room 22)

Edgelands has been defined as that uncertain and overlooked zone, neither city nor countryside, lingering on the urban edge. George Shaw’s series, Twelve Short Walks (2005), is drawn from revisited scenes of his childhood on the Tile Hill council estate in the suburbs of Coventry. Michael Landy’s Nourishment, 2002, features life-sized images of weeds, or ‘street-flowers’ —the overlooked and neglected vegetation of edgelands.

Admire a selection of the Museum’s most spectacular prints not normally on public display. Masterpieces by some of the greatest Old Master printmakers, including Rembrandt and Dürer, will hang alongside prints by later artists such as Degas, Whistler and Picasso.

An exhibition of brilliantly coloured ceramics from Medieval Cyprus, together with related items from the Fitzwilliam Museum's own collection. The exhibition is held in honour of the late Mr Constantine Leventis and includes more than fifty cups and bowls from the Leventis Municipal Museum of Nicosia.

Exhibitions 6 March – January 2013 Museum Lawns Artists featured in the Fitzwilliam Museum’s third Sculpture Promenade are Cambridge based sculptor Helaine Blumenfeld, British sculptor Peter Randall-Page and Japanese sculptor Kan Yasuda. All three artists worked in the renowned sculpture centre of Pietrasanta, Italy, with the famous local Carrara marble. People are encouraged to interact with the pieces, as all three artists created their works with the aim of viewers being able to experience them as much through touch as visually.
