Chairman’s Message
JMOF-FIU Leadership
Happy Holidays. Holidays are a time to spend with your family and realize how lucky we are to be alive in this time in this place. As you look upon the generations around you during the holidays, make the effort to tell the story of your family’s particular history. Oral histories are powerful tools to connect the individuals in your family to each other over the many differences in the lives they are leading. Thanksgiving is one of the most powerful holidays in this country, however, it is only one day. This year we are uniquely lucky to begin our eight day Hanukkah celebration, the evening before Thanksgiving. What a great opportunity to take the time to share your family history in a more in depth manner, while not usurping all the time everyone is together. From the Museum’s standpoint, this is what we strive to do every day. Currently, we have a fabulous exhibit regarding the food service industry. Do you remember going to Wolfie’s when you were growing up? From farm families, to grocers, to restaurateurs, this exhibit covers the Jewish experience through the generations. Make a time to gather the generations of your family to come to our Museum home and we will provide the conversation starters. You can just take out the calendar in the centerfold of this issue of TILES and mark the many exhibits and programs that you will want to attend. We can’t wait to see you here! Also, membership is a wonderfully meaningful gift during these holidays. Thank you and have a safe, healthy and happy holiday.
Advisory Board Officers
Sincerely, Elliot N. Stone Chairman of the Board

Florida Jewish History Month Celebrates
Feature
Jews of Tampa The academic myth of Florida Jewish history was dispelled 30 years ago when the MOSAIC: Jewish Life in Florida project began asking questions. Scholars had conjectured that the history began on Miami Beach after World War II. But research revealed that Jews were allowed to settle in Florida in 1763, after Spain ceded the area to Britain, and they first came to Pensacola. In 1844, one year prior to statehood, Emaline Miley settled in Tampa Bay — 69 years before the first Jews arrived in Miami Beach. In honor of the Tampa settlers, the Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU will host a special event at 2 p.m., Sunday, January 5 as part of Florida Jewish History Month. The event will include a lecture by museum Founding Executive Director Marcia Jo Zerivitz. She will discuss the research for her newly released photo-documentary, “Jews of Tampa.” The 230 vintage images with historical captions capture the fascinating people, places and events that have shaped the history of the Jews of Tampa and their contributions to the development of the community. Before World War II, Tampa was the second largest Jewish community in the state, after Jacksonville. Most first came in the late 19th century to Ybor City, which had 84 Jewish-owned businesses. Over the decades, Jews participated in civic and Jewish organizations, the military, politics and in growing Tampa as a sports center. Herman Glogowski was Tampa’s mayor beginning in 1886. A century later, Sandra Freedman led the city. Jews own the city’s three professional sports teams. Today, with about 23,000 Jews in Tampa, there are fifth generation families who represent the continuity of a people who contribute vibrancy to all facets of the city’s quality of life. Initiated by the museum, Florida Jewish History Month has been observed since 2003, when Gov. Jeb Bush signed a bill declaring the statewide observance. Florida is the first state in the nation to have a month dedicated to the tremendous contributions of Jews in its growth and, in 2006, the concept led to the creation of Jewish American Heritage Month that is now observed each May.
Charter members of Rodeph Sholom Ladies Auxiliary, August 14, 1917. The group was organized to preserve traditional values and heritage and to assist the congregation, primarily in raising funds.
Artist Romero Britto created the official logo for the Florida observance. The museum’s curriculum is approved by the Miami-Dade County Public School Board and distributed to schools in Florida’s 67 counties. The educational materials for Florida Jewish History Month and a speech for anyone to deliver to a group can be found on the museum’s website: jewishmuseum.com. As part of the free public celebration on Jan. 5, Joe’s Stone Crab Restaurant is providing key lime pies, Florida’s official state pie. Jennie and Joe Weiss, the founders of Joe’s, were the first Jews to settle on Miami Beach in 1913. The business continues to be run by the family today. Please join us at the museum on January 5, 2014 to celebrate Florida Jewish History Month. Jews from Tampa will host the event. SOFI FOOD & FUN In conjunction with the museum’s year-long exhibit, Growers, Grocers & Gefilte Fish: A Gastronomic Look at Florida Jews & Food, JMOF-FIU has created a Jewish Food Walking Tour. Featuring Jewish-owned food businesses, past and present, the twice-monthly tours guide visitors through Miami Beach’s SOFI (south of Fifth Street) neighborhood. The tours are led by one of the museum’s volunteer docents, Howard Brayer, who follows a two-mile trek filled with a combination of food and history. Starting with an overview of the settlement of Jews on Miami Beach beginning in 1913 to its peak between 1970 and 1980, when 80 percent of South Beach’s population was Jewish, the stage is set for tour participants to imagine the streets filled with Jewish residents and institutions, including synagogues, delis and other kosher restaurants and Jewish owned retail establishments. Brayer serves up anecdotes of many of the popular Jewish-owned sites that are no longer in business, including Goldstein and Gilbert’s, a kosher restaurant that offered a 10-course chicken or duck dinner for 75 cents in the 1930s. There’s also
Al’s Restaurant, at the corner of Fifth and Washington. Opened in 1932 by Al Galbut, Al’s became a bustling allnight luncheonette and South Beach institution, drawing politicians, film stars and military men, and earning Al the nickname “The Mayor of South Beach.” Along the way, visitors will also learn about the Nemo Hotel, built in 1921 by Sam Magid, his brother-in-law Harry Goodkowsky and Harry’s brother.
When Bostonian Magid visited Miami Beach for the first time, he called it a “slender, low-lying offshore strip of shifting sand, roach infested palmetto groves and slimy mangrove swamps.” Undaunted, he built what became the first kosher hotel on South Beach. As the tour winds through the area, participants can sample a variety of ethnic foods and local favorites, from places such as My Ceviche, owned by
one of Miami’s best up-and-coming chefs, Sam Gorenstein. The native Colombian started cooking for his family when he was tall enough to reach the stove knobs, but his career took off shortly after he completed high school in Miami. His accolades include two James Beard Award nominations and a spot in Forbes’ “30 Under 30” list as a Rising Star Chef nominee. A taste of both history and heaven are combined with a slice of key lime pie at Joe’s Stone Crab, an institution now celebrating its 100th year of continuous ownership by the family of Joe and Jennie Weiss, the first Jews on Miami Beach. The tour ends at the the Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU with a look at the exhibit, featuring photographs and artifacts from many of the places on the tour including Joe’s Stone Crab’s receipts from visits by Caroline Kennedy and Kevin Costner and “thank you” letters from President Bill Clinton and (then) Vice President George Bush, written while he was aboard Air Force II. For tour dates, times and costs and to make a reservation, visit the calendar page on our website: jewishmuseum.com, or call 786-972-3175.
So, how did the participants enjoy the inaugural tour? Here’s one review: “ The Jewish Food Walking Tour at the JMOF-FIU on Sunday, November 17th was a blast. Miami Beach history...check. Interesting food...check. Camaraderie...check; and guide extraordinaire Howard Brayer made it happen. Five stars, don’t miss!” 4

Jonathan Symons B’nai Mitzvah Project Begins
T
he Jewish Museum of FloridaFIU recently hosted a special workshop and reception sponsored for recent b’nai mitzvah celebrants. The event brought together more than 35 students and their families from area synagogues to participate in a cartooning class taught by arts educator and graphic artist Gonzalo Battaglia. The student artwork created during the workshop will be assembled to create the first JMOF-FIU B’nai Mitzvah Comic Book. The comic workshop was the first in a series of special programs that are being offered exclusively to students through the Jonathan Symons B’nai Mitzvah Project. On the day of the bar or bat mitzvah, celebrants are presented with a one-year family gift membership to the museum, and they are included on the invitation list
for these special activities. The goal of the program is to bring together b’nai mitzvah celebrants and their families from various synagogues to meet each other and to enjoy creative programs based on the museum’s exhibits and educational themes. “The museum was so welcoming… the children were engaged during their comic strip writing project and they enjoyed looking at the exhibits,” said Cantor Julie Jacobs of Temple Beth David, who brought a group of her b’nai mitzvah students. “I know that our students are looking forward to the next program in December.” The December program will feature Danny Serfer, the 32-year-old chef and owner of Blue Collar Restaurant, who will talk about his journey from his mom’s kitchen to owning one of Miami’s hippest restaurants.
To date, more than 150 students and their families have been recipients of gift memberships through the Jonathan Symons B’nai Mitzvah Project from the following congregations: Miami-Dade County: Aventura Turnberry Jewish Center, Bet Breira Samu-El Or Olam, Temple Beth Am, Temple Beth Moshe, Temple Beth David, Temple Beth Sholom, Temple Bet Shira, Beth Torah, Temple EmanuEl, Temple Israel, Temple Judea and Temple Sinai; Broward County: Kol Tikvah, Temple Sinai of Hollywood, Temple Solel and Temple Kol Ami – Emanuel and Central Florida: Congregation Sinai. To have your congregation included as a participant in this exciting project, please contact Membership Director Nancy Cohen at 786-972-3164 or membership@jewishmuseum.com

Exhibit
GRAPHIC DETAILS: Confessional Comics by Jewish Women on display through February 16, 2014 An Intimate Look at Ourselves Graphic Details: Confessional Comics by Jewish Women is a groundbreaking exhibition that provides the first in-depth look at a unique niche of graphic storytelling – Jewish women’s autobiographical comics. The exhibit explores how Jewish women contributed to the history of comics, and to the genre of autobiographical comics they helped birth four decades ago. The question posed to these 18 international artists was, “Why unveil parts of yourself and your life in comics?” Their answers are depicted in this powerful group of writings, original drawings, full comic books and graphic novels, expressing the artists’ own pain, laughter, shame, triumphs and selfdoubts in a way that taps a collective nerve. The work is funny, outrageous, poignant and embarrassingly intimate. Graphic Details reflects each artist’s individual journey, refracted through a distinctively Jewish lens in a popculture art form. 8
The influential role of Jews in cartooning has long been acknowledged, with two high school boys from Cleveland, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster originating Superman. Featured in Action Comics #1 and kicking off the “Golden Age of Comics,” Siegel and Shuster were joined by fellow Jewish creators of Captain America, Batman, Spiderman and others. However, from its inception, the comics industry was a man’s world, with women seen only as characters that the men created as objects of fantasy. The role of Jewish women in shaping the medium has been largely unexplored. The first major graphic novel, The Adventures of Obadiah Oldbuck by humorist Rodolphe Toffler, was published in the United States in 1842. In 1895, the comic strip character Yellow Kid became a popular feature in newspapers, actually helping to increase sales and prompting the Hearst Syndicate to release Yellow
TILES | Newsletter of the Jewish Museum of Florida – FIU | December 2013
Kid cartoons in book form. This became the first financially successful graphic novel, however, though the term “graphic novel” wasn’t used until 1964. It was popularized within the comics community after the publication of Will Eisner’s A Contract with God in 1978, and it became familiar to the general public in the late 1980s after the success of the first volume of Art Spiegelman’s Pulitzer Prize winning Maus: A Survivor’s Tale (1992), the biographical story of Spiegelman’s parents in the Holocaust. As the industry experienced a downturn through the 1960s, new talent emerged injecting social awareness and topics like drugs and racism, to make comics more relevant. This era would birth the underground comic, or “comix,” a more edgy version comics. Many used satire to comment on political and social issues such as the Vietnam War and the Civil Rights movement.
Autobiographical graphic storytelling began in the late 1960s as a spinoff of these underground comix. Today, graphic novels are an increasingly important part of comic book publishing, with traditional bookstores and libraries carrying large selections. While female graphic novelists began ghost writing in the 1930s, and some comic shops employed women scripters openly into the 1940s, their acceptance into the world of graphic novels came decades later. Pioneers of the genre from the 1970s are featured in the exhibit, including Aline Kominsky-Crumb and Diane Noomin, who started “Twisted Sisters,” and Trina Robbins and Sharon Rudahl, who together with Crumb, created “Wimmin’s Comix.” Trina Robbins notes that, “Throughout history, Jewish women have been at the forefront of revolutions, from political radicals like Emma Goldman; sexual radicals like Gertrude Stein; and feminist radicals like Betty Friedan and Gloria Steinem.” To Trina, it is a natural progression that women should be at the forefront of confessional graphic novels. The contribution of women
to this medium serves another role, of debunking the male myth that to be powerful, you need to be superheroes. Aline Kominsky-Crumb describes the exhibit saying, “Hopefully it is entertaining and hopefully it’s so self-revealing that other people read and identify with it and it makes them have some kind of knowledge about themselves … and makes them feel less alienated. It serves a great purpose in the culture because people see themselves, and they see other people’s craziness, and it makes them feel less crazy.” Some of the artists in the show have distinctly Florida connections. Sarah Lazarovic was raised in South Florida and has drawn on her local experiences in some of her works, including an encounter with another famous Florida comic artist, Syd Hoff. The event would later be the foundation for a tribute to Hoff in Tablet Magazine after he passed away in 2012. Vanessa Davis was born in West Palm Beach, where she graduated from the Dreyfoos School of the Arts (then called Palm Beach County
School of the Arts) in 1996. Her mother ran the Palm Beach Jewish Film Festival for many years. This exhibit depicts people’s everyday fears, the often messy physicality of life, its daily difficulties, brief successes and awkward moments. It shows that we are all human, all of us have flaws, and there is almost a triumph of weakness over strength, where the ability to admit your own failures and mistakes is rewarded. Graphic Details is curated by Michael Kaminer and Sarah Lightman. Kaminer is a New York based journalist and editor who wrote the 2008 story in The Forward that inspired this exhibit. Lightman is an award-winning artist and curator who is researching a Doctorate at the University of Glasgow on Hurting and Healing in Autobiographical Comics. The traveling exhibition was developed by Yeshiva University Museum curator Zachary Paul Levine. Sponsors include Funding Arts Network and media sponsor the Jewish Daily Forward, who has supplied free catalogs of the show in the form of a newspaper insert.

Did you know that the first Jewish mayor of Sarasota, David Cohen, was also the former concertmaster of the Florida West Coast Symphony? Cohen, born in Philadelphia in 1910, was considered a child prodigy and started playing the violin at age 10. He gave his first professional performance at the age of 12. Though he won a scholarship to the Curtis Institute of Music in 1929, there were few jobs available for professional musicians during the Great Depression, so he abandoned his dream of a music career and went into business. He moved to Sarasota in 1948 and operated a candy and specialty shop. Cohen’s segue into politics began with his election as Sarasota City Commissioner in 1960, where he became a driving force behind the building of the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall. He was elected Mayor of Sarasota in 1964 and became known as “Mr. Sarasota,” though he never gave up his love of the violin, playing every day of his life, until his death in 1989.
Morris “Pop” Segal started his taxi business in 1927 with a “fleet” of two cars – his 1926 Studebaker and 1924 Hupmobile. Thirty years later, he and his sons William, Stanley and Norton were the owners and operators of the Yellow Cab System in Greater Miami, with a stock of 300 cabs, 500 rent-a-cars and 100 limousines, rolling up more than 15 million miles a year. Born in Russia, Pop Segal immigrated to the U.S. in 1907 at age 16 and settled in Boston. He moved to Coral Gables in 1924, where got into the real estate “boom,” but when the market slumped, he moved to Miami Beach and embarked on his taxicab career, using his two family cars to transport people in Miami and the Gables. By 1929, he founded the Segal Safety Cab Company, one of the first taxi operations in the area and he later absorbed cab companies such as Radio, White Line, Red Top and Checker, and he created the Yellow Cab System. Morris “Pop” Segal passed away in 1973 at age 83, but his sons continued in the business, expanding to include subsidiaries of Greyhound, American Sightseeing Tours and American Bus Lines. It’s also important to remember that the museum would not have its extensive collection if it weren’t for so many of you who have graciously donated your family’s memorabilia to be preserved and available for future generations. Museum seeks nominations for 2014 Breaking the Glass Ceiling Awards Nomination deadline is Friday, January 17, 2014 at 5 p.m. The Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU is proud to announce the opening of the nomination process for its annual Breaking the Glass Ceiling Awards. This award is presented to women who have broken the proverbial glass ceiling in professional fields that are normally dominated by men. Nominees are also judged based upon activities in the Jewish and civic communities and serving as role models for other women. The deadline for nominations is Friday, January 17, 2014 at 5 p.m. “While there have been outstanding strides made by Jewish professional women throughout the state, it is important that we continue to recognize these women as an inspiration to others to aim for the stars,” said Jo Ann
Arnowitz, director of Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU. “We encourage the Florida community to nominate women who they feel are worthy of this honor. Each year we receive a fascinating assortment of nominations of women from all over the state in diverse professions, from fire fighters to forensic artists.” The Breaking the Glass Ceiling Award was established by the Jewish Museum of Florida in 1995. To date, more than 75 outstanding winners have been honored with this distinction, from a wide variety of fields such as medicine, banking, accounting, academia, politics, law, aviation, journalism, sports and entertainment.
The 2014 Breaking the Glass Awards ceremony will take place on Sunday, April 27, 2014 at 2 pm, featuring the honorees discussing the obstacles they faced and how they broke through the glass ceiling. “The event is always an uplifting experience,” said Tamra Sheffman, who has been a chair of the committee almost since its inception. “We especially encourage students to attend this program, as it is such an inspiration to hear these women’s personal stories of their often rocky paths to success.” To submit a nominee for the Award, please visit www.jewishmuseum.com and download the nomination guidelines and application form, or contact Nancy Cohen, Membership Director, at 786-972-3164 or membership@jewishmuseum.com.

Their stories of displacement, fractured identities, material losses, resettlement and integration in new societies are the project’s mission. With memories fading and elderly people passing on each day, this project provides the last chance to document this irretrievable period of Jewish history and the human stories, and establish an archive to preserve the Sephardi legacy. FIU student Anyeli Sylva didn’t know what to expect when a chicken coop she crafted out of pallet wood went on display at the Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU. “I went to the museum on the exhibit’s opening night and I had no idea what to expect. It was a great feeling to see people standing around the piece and talking about it,” said Sylva, a senior architecture major in FIU’s College of Art + Architecture. “This is my first work on display at a museum and I’m so happy and thankful for the entire experience.” The chicken coop is part of the museum’s food exhibit, Growers, Grocers & Gefilte Fish: A Gastronomic Look at Florida Jews & Food. Spanning nearly 200 years, it features artifacts, figures and photographs of produce growers, ranchers, “ma and pa” grocers, distributers, butchers, bakers and renowned chefs who have helped shaped Florida’s gastronomic culture and history. Sylva’s chicken coop is modeled after the wheeled chicken crate cart first fabricated by Ralph Gross in 1950. Coming Soon CINEMA JUDAICA: The War Years, 1939-1949 March 4, 2014 – August 24, 2014 This unprecedented exhibit of iconic Hollywood film posters from 1939-1949 illustrates how the motion picture industry countered America’s isolationism, advocated going to war against the Nazis, influenced post-war perceptions of the Jewish people and the founding of the State of Israel, and shaped the face of contemporary Jewish life. The exhibition begins with the Hollywood studios’ compliance with the Nazis’ control of the motion picture industry in Germany, the ban on Jews from employment within it, and their restrictions on the American distribution of films shown in German and throughout Europe. Only one studio, Warner Brothers, refused to comply with any of Goebbel’s demands and withdrew from the German market. Harry Warner and his brothers committed themselves to making anti-Nazi movies to alert the nation to the Nazi threat. Following the war, there were “Exodus” films addressing the attempt by European war refugees to build their lives and cultures after the Holocaust. Included are posters from classic films such as: Gentleman’s Agreement, Confessions of a Nazi Spy, and The Great Dictator. Exhibition from: Hebrew Union College – Jewish Institute of Religion. Members’ Opening Reception sponsored by the Robert Arthur Segall Foundation. 26

So What Is The Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU The Jewish Museum of Florida opened in 1995 in a former historic synagogue that housed the first congregation on Miami Beach. Built in 1936, the Henry Hohauser designed building that underwent a two-year restoration, boasts Art Deco features, a copper dome and 80 stained glass windows. In 2007, the museum expanded into the original 1929 synagogue next door after a one-year restoration, now The Jonathan Symons Building. Both buildings are on the National Register of Historic Places. In 2008, the two buildings were connected with a skylighted Bessie’s Bistro. The museum is much more than beautiful buildings. It is a place that presents its own and traveling exhibits, sponsors cultural and educational programs, houses a Collections & Research Center reflecting 250 years of Florida Jewish history, and communicates Jewish history, art, culture and values to Jews and non-Jews alike in an informal mode. The museum is also a place where Jews of all ages and stripes discover and reaffirm their rich heritage – thus helping to strengthen Jewish identity and ensure Jewish continuity. So how did all this get started? You may already know if you are among those who participated in and enjoyed the exhibit MOSAIC: Jewish Life in Florida that traveled to 13 cities (1990-94). Depicting Florida Jewish history from 1763 to the present, this was a statewide grassroots project to collect material evidence from the time Jews were first allowed to live in the Sunshine State. Thousands of photographs, artifacts and oral histories were gathered from families and this collection continues now in the museum, which was created as a result of the interest and support garnered from the original MOSAIC project. Where the traveling exhibit was the launch, the Jewish Museum of Florida further delves into the state’s rich Jewish history of yesterday and today – for the future. Historic Partnership with Florida International University (FIU) Following the approval of the museum’s Board of Directors, Florida International University’s Board of Trustees and the Florida Board of Governors, the museum became part of the FIU family. This historic partnership leverages the resources of the museum and FIU, igniting a new era of interdisciplinary education and research focused on the history of the Jewish experience in Florida, the ways in which Florida Jews influence and are influenced by the cultural dynamics of Florida, the nation and the world, and issues of discrimination against all peoples in Florida throughout history. A key component of the partnership is the relocation of a variety of FIU programs, including the Jewish Studies Certificate Program, to the museum’s facilities. The plan also includes the expansion of academic programs and research endeavors designed to educate FIU students, faculty and the greater Florida community about the challenges of the immigrant experiences shared by all ethnicities in the State. Whether your family has lived in Florida for eight generations, as some have, or just arrived – YOUR story is an important tile the MOSAIC. Join us!
