Tell us a little about yourself and the program you are in.
I was born and raised in Veracruz, Mexico, and earned my bachelor’s degree in International Business in 2008. Life eventually brought me to Miami, Florida, where I embraced new opportunities and experiences. In 2024, I decided to return to school to pursue a Master’s in Human Resources Management at FIU.
Did you always plan on going to graduate school?
Honestly, no. After finishing college, my main goal was to move to a new city and start an independent life.
What made you pursue a graduate degree?
I recognized the value of earning a graduate degree—especially from a respected institution like FIU. It’s a rewarding investment in personal and professional growth.
Why did you choose your program, and how did you make the decision?
With over 10 years of experience in managerial roles, I became increasingly interested in the human resources side of my positions.
In many cases, I found myself more involved in HR-related tasks, which sparked my curiosity to learn more. I realized that gaining deeper knowledge in this area could open the possibility of transitioning into a dedicated HR career.
When I had the opportunity to work at FIU, I embraced it. I was going through significant changes in my life, and joining FIU was a pivotal part of that journey.
As the saying goes, change happens for a reason. Discovering that one of the benefits of working at FIU was a tuition waiver for graduate programs motivated me even more.
At first, I felt intimidated by the idea of balancing full-time work with graduate studies. I was also unsure about being admitted since my undergraduate degree was from another country. However, my directors encouraged me and supported me throughout the process, and the graduate admissions team made it incredibly smooth. When I researched FIU’s Master’s in Human Resources Management (MSHRM) program, I found it had exactly the curriculum I was looking for. Everything fell into place, and I knew it was the right decision. Now, I’m completing my first semester and aiming to graduate in 2026.
Don’t rush into a graduate program if you don’t feel ready, but don’t wait too long if it’s part of your plan. Earning a master’s degree or Ph.D. can undoubtedly open doors to better opportunities.
Requirements for admission vary depending on the graduate program at FIU. Unlike undergraduate admissions, graduate admissions decisions are made at the program level, so it is important for prospective students to contact a program representation directly. Once this has been done, prospective students should:
• Complete an online application by visiting admissions.fiu.edu and submit the $30 application fee.
• Submit official, original transcripts, certificates, and diplomas from all previous institutions. https://go.fiu.edu/transcripts
• Submit any program specific requirements (personal statement, GMAT/GRE, resume, etc.)
