We provide continuous leadership development opportunities based on best-in-class research and practice: the building blocks of successful personal leadership philosophy. The Center is proud to present the 2014-15 Impact Report on fiscal year activities and accomplishments. Throughout, you will find testimonials from the alumni and participants of our programs. hat gets us excited at the FIU Center for Leadership is the potential for impact! Indeed, impact is a key theme that both motivates us and guides the direction of The Center, and we are thrilled to both see and hear about demonstrable ways that we have made a difference in the lives of individuals, teams, and in some cases, even organizations. In 2014-2015, the three pillars of The Center continued to frame the scope of our impact in leadership Research, Education, and Engagement through: 1. Cutting-edge research and dissemination of relevant findings that can be utilized by leaders, 2. Intensive leadership development programs where we focus on developable leadership behaviors/skills and self-insight, and 3. An open and free lecture series featuring world class leaders. One of the ways that most excites us about our impact is when we hear from leaders who have put into practice some of the skills, knowledge, and insights that they have learned through The Center. Just to give a few examples, we heard from a senior leader who begins to use proven techniques to clearly articulate an authentic vision, a student who is able to lead a project group more effectively by thinking more strategically, and a school principal who is able to work around a weakness more effectively and lead from a strength. At a more macro-level, The Center’s impact can be seen from some of the statistics from this past year, which are contained in this report. A few are worth highlighting below. During 2014-2015, The Center • Staff and affiliated faculty presented or published research in journals, magazines, and conferences 17 times. • Received 25 submissions from all over the world for our high-profile Alvah H. Chapman Jr. Outstanding Dissertation Award. The winner’s research has now been featured in dozens of news outlets in Europe, Asia, and North America. • Was once again among the top-ranked leadership development programs in the country in the Leadership Excellence annual rankings. • Increased student attendance at lectures and events with over 1,250 FIU students, up 275% from the previous year. • Achieved total registration of 3,604 for The Leadership Lectures and granted 400 Professional Development credit hours for FIU staff. We are excited about the coming year and the opportunity to continue to expand The Center’s impact more broadly within our university, within the greater Miami community, and nationally and internationally.

RESEARCH

Advancing leadership studies As industry, education, health care and governance evolve with new technology and globalization, the field of leadership studies is continually evolving. The Center for Leadership has established a national reputation for cutting-edge research that engages critical questions in the field to inform and transform leadership practice. Through collaboration with key strategic partners and academic thought leaders around the world, Center research encompasses the spectrum of leadership studies, from business and medicine to international relations and public administration. The 2014-15 fiscal year marked the most research productive and impactful in Center history, hosting three major research events, including the annual Leadership Research Colloquium, The Faculty Series and The Alvah H. Chapman Jr. Outstanding Dissertation Awards - all drawing participation from scholars from around the world.

The Alvah H. Chapman Jr. Outstanding Dissertation Award Narcissism and Leadership Ongoing research by University of Buffalo Assistant Professor, Dr. Emily Grijalva, shows for the first time that a mid-range of Narcissism can, in fact, be an optimal level for leadership effectiveness. Dr. Grijalva’s paper, won her this year’s Outstanding Dissertation Award given her research’s potential to contribute to leadership knowledge and future research in this area.

Drs. Mayra Beers and Nathan Hiller present Dr. Emily Grijalva with the 2014 Alvah H. Chapman Jr. Outstanding Dissertation Award. The presentation was made at the 2014 Academy of Management’s annual conference in Philadelphia. The Center’s partnership with the Academy of Management’s Network of Leadership Scholars (NLS) continues to foster collaborations between FIU faculty and others from around the globe, and our Center sponsored networking reception at the conference remains one of the most widely attended events with more than 250 academic professionals.

EDUCATION

Combining theory and application for better leaders Research continues to confirm that training and education are essential to cultivate innovative, effective and visionary leaders in every field. The Center for Leadership’s executive development programs provide the skills necessary to lead boardrooms and classrooms, hospitals and agencies, the military and government. Program participants represent an internationally diverse group of executives, enabling rich peer-topeer learning experiences and the development of powerful connections. In 2014-2015, more than 250 individuals from around the world participated in our immersive leadership programs, representing over 70 companies including seven (7) Fortune 500s. The participants consistently evaluated The Center’s programs between 4.70 and 5.0 on a fivepoint rating scale. Coupled with the undergraduate and graduate learning opportunities we provide, The Center’s education programs are making significant strides in strengthening leadership in our community and beyond.

• Led by Professor Nathan Hiller, the fifth cohort of The High-Potential Leaders Program included 27 high-impact executives, senior managers, directors and vice presidents from around the world. • The Women Leaders Program drew record enrollment of female executives in 2014-2015. Led by Dr. Joyce J. Elam, the program is based on The Center’s contemporary leadership competency model and has, since launched in fall of 2007, amassed more than 300 program alumni. • The 2014-2015 Principals Leadership Development Program (PLDP) led by Center Director Dr. Mayra E. Beers enrolled 30 participants from the Miami-Dade County Public Schools (MDCPS). The 7-day program utilizes cutting edge-research models developed by The Center for Leadership to empower principals to be change agents in their schools. The success of the PLDP program has led to a more immersive partnership with MDCPS, spurring 3 new custom programs including the Summer Leadership Institute (SLI) for aspiring principals, the Leadership Institute for Teachers (LIFT) designed for teacher leaders, and Mentoring for Leadership Effectiveness (MLE) to provide veteran principals with guidelines for providing impactful mentor/mentee experiences.

EDUCATION • The Center’s Leadership Competency Model, the basis for all our executive programs, also allows us to build Custom Leadership Workshops or presentations to meet company-specific needs. In 2014-2015, The Center provided custom programming for Hewlett Packard, The Federal Emergency Management Association (FEMA), the Department of Human Resources (FIU) and Miami-Dade County Public Schools. • The Leadership Labs for Miami Fellows was launched in 2013 after The Miami Foundation engaged The Center to provide leadership training for its Miami Fellows Program. Sessions were designed as an immersive leadership development component for young executives with a deep interest in civic engagement, and includes a three-day workshop, followed by a series of ongoing individual sessions. Cohort VIII which runs from the summer of 2014 to fall of 2015, marked the third cohort for The Center/Foundation partnership.

ENGAGEMENT

Inspiring community dialogue on leadership As we advance the research, teaching and practice of visionary leadership, The Center inspires dialogue within the community by showcasing influential leaders and leadership scholars at our lectures and special events. The Leadership Lectures series brings to FIU leadership luminaries from around the world, who share the latest ideas in the field of leadership research or from their own experiences at the helm of their organizations. More than 3,500 faculty, students and community members registered to attend the lectures, indicating our community’s desire to be at the forefront of leadership knowledge and best practices. Each lecture was recorded and made available on The Center’s website, providing the opportunity for even greater reach. The Center’s partnership with The Honors College at FIU ensures that leadership topics become a key part of the development of our graduates from all colleges at the university. For attending our lectures, students receive Honors Credits which are needed to graduate as an Honors Student. More than 850 honors students attended lectures during 2014-2015, resulting in more than 3,000 credits being awarded to students and cementing the lectures as a valued university resourse that engages the theory-to-practice continuum for students. With the generous support of Mercantil Commercebank, The Leadership Lectures remain free and open to the general public.

The Leadership Lectures 2014-2015 presenters

Barrington Irving, Founder, Experience Aviation, (February, 2015) “To make your mark in the world, you gotta have grit! Grit means sacrificing beyond what an ordinary person would do to achieve a dream. It means staying up until 3:00 a.m. and getting up at 6:00 the next morning. Grit is going and going — and going some more when you think you can’t. I’m showing students the real heroes – the innovation heroes, the scholars, the thinkers – who are doing brilliant work to make this a better planet. I want to empower students to master the knowledge they need to become the next innovators.”

Herminia Ibarra, Cora Chaired Professor of Leadership and Learning, Professor of Organizational Behavior, Institut Européen d’Administration des Affaires (INSEAD) (April, 2015) Boasting the largest number of registrants for the 2014-2015 lecture season, Dr. Herminia Ibarra was made to feel at home. With more than 550 individuals registering to attend her lecture, including over 200 community members and 180 students, many were eager to hear from the Cuban-American raised in Miami, and whose new book, Act Like a Leader, Think like a Leader, was then recently published. Her message was clear: “Be more playful with your own identity to stretch beyond your current selfconcept. The more you experiment with acting like a leader, the more you and others will perceive you as one. That’s the road to leadership!”

Special Events

The Priority Lecture: David Menasche Veteran educator David Menasche’s six year battle with brain cancer ended his time in the classroom in 2012. The years that followed saw him visiting hundreds of former students in more than 50 cities traveling more than 8,000 miles, and resulting his best-selling memoir, The Priority List: A Teacher’s Final Quest to Discover Life’s Greatest Lessons. The Priority Lecture, presented in partnership with The Honors College, was David’s opportunity to share with the Miami community what lessons his students found most valuable from his years as their English teacher at Coral Reef Senior High School. More than 700 people registered to attend his lecture within the first 24hours of its announcement, and would eventually become our lecture with the highest registration in history with over 1,200 RSVPs. Visibly weaker but still commanding, David shared candidly and frankly with the audience and stayed for over 3 hours to sign books and reconnect with students. A few weeks later, David succumbed to his illness and passed away in November of 2014. His legacy remains through his impact on hundreds in our community and around the world.
