Biochemistry Ph.D. Program Florida International University (FIU) offers a Ph.D. in Biochemistry, providing students with educational
and research opportunities in diverse aspects of biochemistry. The program features first-rate teaching and
innovative training, preparing students to tackle contemporary issues in biology, biochemistry and medicine
[
with fundamental theories of biochemistry and molecular and cellular biology as well as biochemical and biomedical research techniques.
From personal experience, I can say that this program is designed to help students gain knowledge in a variety of scientific fields, acquire critical thinking and presentation skills through different in-class assignments as well as learn about research of other scientists through weekly seminars. First year rotations provide a great opportunity not only to participate in different interesting research projects but also to make new friends and choose the environment that suits your personality the most for further work. —Elena Shersher, 2016 Biochemistry Ph.D. graduate
Interdisciplinary, Collaborative and Innovative
The Biochemistry Ph.D. Program is an interdisciplinary program administered jointly by the Department of
]
Chemistry and Biochemistry, the Department of Biological Sciences and the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine. This structure allows for interactions between students, postdoctoral fellows and faculty across several disciplines. The curriculum provides:
• A firm foundation in the theory and techniques of biochemistry
• Full integration of the core disciplines of biochemistry, biology, biological chemistry and medicine • A variety of research techniques within the first year of study
• The opportunity for students to specialize in biochemistry or molecular biology • Access to cutting-edge research with excellent faculty mentors and collaborative research groups

With its world-class faculty leading the field in the areas
of teaching and scientific research, the program explores
collaborations with local, national and international agencies and research facilities. Students work closely with campus partners including the International Forensic Research Institute and the Southeastern Environmental Research Center.
Research Opportunities
With leading researchers in biochemistry and molecular biology, the program allows students to select their research group for
thesis work and participate in research beginning early in their graduate work, preferably in the first year of study. Concurrent with thesis research, students take classes in biochemistry,
molecular biology, cell biology and biotechniques. They can serve as teaching assistants and engage actively in broadly based research seminars and colloquium programs. Research opportunities including: • Protein structure and function relationship • DNA metabolism and genetic stability • Gene regulation
Admission Requirements All applicants must have a bachelor’s degree, or its equivalent, from a recognized institution of higher education. Applicants should have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 for undergraduate work or its equivalent and a minimum grade point average of 3.0 for all combined graduate work. Applicants
are also required to submit general GRE scores. Although there is no minimal score requirement, applicants with an average percentile of 62 will be preferentially considered. For additional requirements, including those for international students, visit biochemistry.fiu.edu.
Application Process
Applications for graduate study are submitted online.
For information about deadlines, supporting documents or to apply, visit the University Graduate School website at
gradschool.fiu.edu. In addition to completing the online
application form, supplemental materials may be required.
For a complete list of supporting materials and information about how to submit them, visit biochemistry.fiu.edu.
