your world.

INNOVATIVE IDEAS THRIVE AT FIU. We think differently. Our students, professors and alumni live in a world of possibilities. They see solutions. And they are creating a better world for us all. THEIR JOURNEY WILL BE YOUR JOURNEY. Unlike many institutions, our undergrads are in the trenches, conducting experiments and helping with top research. Together, your ideas will break through.

Create future technologies The Internet of Things (IOT) is changing the way we live, work and play. There will be more than 20 billion IOT devices in the next few years—smart devices such as sensors, appliances, phones, cameras, meters, wearable technologies and cars linked by a network. We are among the first in the nation to offer a bachelor’s degree that will prepare you for a career in this field. You will be an expert on hardware, software, wireless communications and cybersecurity.

Keisha Gamble, a junior information technology major and FIU cyber fellow

Train as a cyber warrior Previously, concerns about cybersecurity were confined to those working in IT fields. But in recent years, a cybersecurity industry has evolved as those who need to worry about hacking run all the way from governments and corporate executives down to public utilities, mom-and-pop businesses and ordinary individuals. In response, we offer degree programs and cybersecurity courses across disciplines to bring in business and criminal justice students, as well as the more traditional computing and engineering students.

The natural world may provide events, but we —human beings—are the ones who create the situations and conditions by which a natural event becomes known as a “disaster” or in some cases, a catastrophe. In our Extreme Events Institute, we are working on a multihazard and transdisciplinary approach to ultimately save lives.

Prevent disasters and save lives

Manuel Garcia - Havana, Cuba

A year after arriving from Cuba, I applied for a job as a custodial worker at FIU. My job—cleaning windows, bathrooms and hallways in the dorms. I also applied for admission and got accepted. As a full-time employee, FIU paid for seven credits, so that’s what I took. I’m now a student researcher at FIU’s Discovery Lab*, which developed “Hutch,” a telebot that allows disabled police and military personnel to serve as patrol officers. I worked on the communication systems that control Hutch’s movement.

Our Wall of Wind is the largest and most powerful university research facility of its kind. The facility helps researchers better understand wind effects on civil infrastructure systems to help prevent wind hazards from becoming community disasters.

Genius is one percent talent and 99 percent hard work. I try to focus—everything I do is to have a better future. It’s why I came here.” *This lab offers student-led research opportunities.

Explore

the unknown.

INSATIABLE CURIOSITY DRIVES US. We stand in awe of the natural world. We are compelled to explore its outer limits and search for answers to the unknown. OUR STUDENTS JOIN IN ON THE ADVENTURE. And our research is yielding results.

Our researchers frequently appear on the Discovery Channel ’s Shark Week!

Off the coast of Thailand, marine scientist Mark Bond examines the underside markings of a manta ray to determine species and sex. Our scientists are also leading the international GLOBAL FINPRINT, A MULTIMILLION DOLLAR INITIATIVE that will fill a critical information gap about the diminishing number of sharks and rays. We lead institutions from the U.S. to Australia conducting surveys that will improve our understanding of how sharks and rays influence coral reef ecosystems and how humans impact these species and their habitats.

The Brain Our scientists from across the disciplines — medicine, engineering, pyschology and physics — have dedicated their careers to studying mental processes in the healthy and the diseased human brain. The collaboration is making possible advances unheard of just a few years ago. • Cognitive learning • Language acquisition • Addiction • Toxic poisoning • High-tech neurology tools • Nanotechnology

Investigate Our professors are conducting original research in forensic science. They are providing scientific expertise to law enforcement and the legal community. • Arson and explosive residue analysis • Counterfeit currency detection • Detector dogs • DNA evidence and population substructuring • Drug analysis

Graduate student Rhett Williamson created an ink library database that will help investigators trace counterfeit currency.

Our on-campus MRI machine produces 120,000 times the Earth’s magnetic field.

We’re at the forefront of the largest long-term study of brain development and child health in the U.S., dubbed the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development, or ABCD.

We have the best seats in town for up-close encounters with the stars.

Catherine Catherine Guinovart - Key Largo, Florida

Growing up in Key Largo, I realized at a young age that we depend on the ocean. When I decided to attend FIU, I never knew that 60 feet below the surface, right in my backyard, was Aquarius Reef Base, the world’s only underwater research laboratory.

As a junior working at the Medina Aquarius program, I visited the underwater habitat for the first time in the scientific diving course. A year later, I experienced what it is like to be an aquanaut and live underwater at Aquarius.”

STEAM.

Science + Technology + Engineering + ART + Math = STEAM

THE ARTS ARE ABOUT HUMAN EXPRESSION. They enrich our lives. They give us the opportunity to feel and find meaning. Our artists are creating significant works in music, fiction, theater, architecture and painting. WITH THEIR TRAINING AND MENTORING, YOU WILL FIND YOUR VOICE AND YOUR WORK CAN AND WILL HAVE AN IMPACT.

Dennis Lehane MFA ’01, writer of “Gone Baby Gone,” “Mystic River” and “Shutter Island.”

Write a Bestseller. Our creative writing program has yielded some of the most talented writers of our time. Housed at the Biscayne Bay Campus, major writers such as Campbell McGrath, Lynne Barrett, John Dufresne, Denise Duhamel, Julie Wade, Debra Dean and Les Standiford serve on the regular faculty. Some distinguished visiting teachers have included Richard Blanco ’91, MFA ’97 Jim Hall, James Jones and Maxine Kumin.

Learn from the masters.

Faculty member and renowned artist David Chang carries forward the classical painting tradition to future generations at our Academy of Portrait & Figurative Art, the first at a public university in the country. At the studio an artist and apprentices work together.

Graphic design major Vivian Carolina Rivera takes a break from studying to enjoy the iconic walls of Wynwood.

Set the beat. It’s not enough to love music. Our musicians live and breathe it. If they’re not practicing, they are performing. Our artistin-residence program offers students the opportunity to learn from some of the most accomplished artists out there.

Design. Act. Direct. Through a rigorous course of study in the classroom and participation in a diverse mix of productions, FIU Theatre guides students through the discovery of their unique artistic visions. Our students stand out nationally, winning Kennedy Center awards in directing, theatrical design, costume design and stage management.

Imagine yourself in the heart of the modern art world, Wynwood. Our students have access to 15,000 square feet of studio and lab space for architecture, design, art and communication within Mana Wynwood.

I enrolled as an architecture major and during my first meeting with my academic advisor I asked him if there was such a thing as “theatre architecture.” He sent me to the Theatre Department.

When you don’t grow up around the theatre, you don’t know that any of this exists. FIU Theatre has shown me parts of myself that I didn’t even know existed. I always appreciated the arts, but I didn’t know I had an artistic and creative side to myself.”

I got a full scholarship to attend the prestigious Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival!

ENTREPRENEUR.

Does this sound like what you are looking for? • the thrill of competition • the taste for adventure • the joy of creation • the satisfaction of team building • the key to achieve meaning in life

You are an entrepreneur at heart. Our university is full of resources to help you succeed in creating your very own business.

Learn from the pros. To be entrepreneurial, you must learn from successful entrepreneurs. Our College of Business faculty includes 150+ scholars and business leaders, representing 38 nationalities. They are internationally known experts. They will offer you a wealth of research and practical business savvy. A fifth of more than 55,000 of our business alumni own their own businesses. Some 70 percent work in Florida, in organizations that collectively represent a major part of the state's economy, and a large number work for international or multinational firms. You will follow in their footsteps.

At our Downtown Brickell location, in the heart of South Florida’s international business district, students get meaningful boardroom experience.

WHAT’S YOUR IDEA?

Create usable software at campus hackathons. Tech is not an industry. Rather, tech is a force that is disrupting every industry. Regardless of your major, you’ll have the opportunity to develop future technologies at our hackathons.

Collaborate and design. Our College of Communication, Architecture + The Arts is the only arts/design college in the nation to house a MakerBot Innovation Lab; it’s located at our Miami Beach Urban Studios. The college also supports social entrepreneurs at the Ratcliffe Art + Design Incubator at Biscayne Bay Campus.

“Every single place where there is a top innovation hub, there is a worldclass research institution. So to have a world-class research institution like FIU here, they’re providing the seeds of innovation.” - Jaret L. Davis, past-chair of the Miami-Dade economic development organization known as The Beacon Council

11,000 alumni are business owners.

Pitch your ideas to real investors at StartUP FIU. Ideas alone can’t create change. Ideas need to be nurtured and refined. They need support to become more than just ideas. That’s where our StartUP FIU steps in, providing the guidance and support that help ideas find their way to the real world. StartUP FIU is a university-wide initiative to foster and develop innovation and entrepreneurship. These opportunities include the development of breakthrough technologies, the pursuit of enterprises that close social or environmental gaps and the creation of companies that can create meaningful jobs of the future.

215,000+ alumni

Stand out as a member of the Panther Network. Our alumni have been recruited to push the limits of the human experience in science, business, government and art. After years of studying and working toward a degree, these Panthers’ hard work paid off. They’ve slain the dragon. Check out how their FIU journey helped them land their dream job:

SpaceX came calling for Engineering major Daniella Bernal ’17, who started college at 16. “There was nothing more I wanted in the world than to be able to work on something that brings man to space. I got my job at Space X through all the baby steps I took here at FIU that prepared me for it. I got involved with student government and my engineering clubs and that really helped me learn to communicate better, learn how to have confidence in my design ideas.”

Google hired Krista Shuckerow ’17, a statistics and economics major with a minor in computer science, before graduating. “I think it has a lot to do with the fact that FIU students [are] making noise in the programming/hackathon community, and companies [are] noticing. I interviewed with a few companies, including Microsoft, Capital One and Google. In the end, after talking about it with my trusted peers, friends and family, I decided to accept the offer from Google.”

Ahmed Elsayed ’18 went to work for Boeing Research & Technology (BR&T) in Huntsville, Alabama, as an electrical and electronics design engineer right after graduation. “Through the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering within FIU’s College of Engineering & Computing, I was exposed to real energy storage and electric devices. The hands-on experience is a major asset in my current role.”

#GotMyFirstJob

Linda Flores ’17 went through a national competitive interview process to land her first job as an NBCUniversal Page. “The FIU School of Communication + Journalism, as well as FIU’s Division of External Relations, taught me how to produce, film and edit my own content. I am so thankful to all my FIU professors and internship supervisors that helped me get to where I am today.”

Outstanding Alumni Panthers are making a splash in the ARTS. Actor Danny Pino ’96 is known for his work in the TV shows Cold Case and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. He also played Grand Marshal at our Homecoming parade in 2013. On Broadway, actor, stage director and filmmaker Andy Señor not only played “Angel” in the awardwinning musical RENT, he also directed and produced the historic production in Cuba. Most recently, he was associate director for “On Your Feet!”—based on the lives of Gloria and Emilio Estefan. Before Johnny Rez was a contestant on The Voice, he played with his band Rezolution in the GC Pit at Modesto A. Maidique Campus. Teresita Fernández ’90 is an accomplished artist best known for her public sculptures and original use of materials. She is a 2005 John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation Fellow. Author Dennis Lehane ’01 has written several novels, including Gone, Baby, Gone, Shutter Island and Mystic River, which were later made into films.  Dawn Ostroff ’80 is president of Condé Nast Entertainment, focusing on the development, production and distribution of original television.

They’re creating their own opportunities building standout BUSINESSES. Panthers  Eddie Leon ’88, David Rodriguez ’12 and Jose Mallea ’16 likely produce your favorite local beers. Many students use a corner of a Chaplin School demo kitchen to cook up their homebrews and start serving them at beer festivals around town.

They’re NFL standouts. Former FIU Football star TY Hilton ’11 is now a wide receiver for the Indianapolis Colts. Johnathan Cyprien is a defensive back with the Tennessee Titans.

They’re leaders in HOSPITALITY.  Richard Brilliant’93 is the Chief Audit Officer for Carnival Corporation, the largest cruise company in the world. SOBEWFF® propelled alumnus Andrew Kaplan into a career with Rachael Ray as her vice president of culinary operations.

They’re leaders in GOVERNMENT.  Mercedes Viana Schlapp ’94 is the White House Director of Strategic Communications.

Shared adventures are always better. You will connect with kindred spirits who will help you discover what makes you come alive. Panthers lift each other up. We say, “Let’s try that crazy idea. Maybe it will work.” We rally around our fellow Panthers in the classroom and on the field.
