FIU has designated six PREEMINENT PROGRAMS A preeminent program is defined as a collaborative endeavor that demonstrates extraordinary success in providing unique learning opportunities, pioneering research and engagement while expanding FIU’s financial base. Designation as a preeminent program is recognition of outstanding contributions to advancing FIU’s BeyondPossible2020 strategic plan.

Bridge Engineering Program

The Bridge Engineering Program addresses one of the nation’s major infrastructure issues. There are more than 614,000 bridges in the United States, and roughly 23 percent need replacing or retrofitting. The Bridge Engineering Program has a national and international reputation for expertly tackling challenging engineering problems and providing industry and government with innovative and advanced technologies.

Center for Children and Families

The Center for Children and Families is a nationally recognized, multidisciplinary clinical research center committed to improving the lives of children and families struggling with mental health concerns. Its mission is to (1) study the causes and nature of children’s mental health problems, (2) develop intervention and prevention models for evidence-based, costeffective services, (3) provide services for children and families in clinical and community settings and (4) educate families, professionals and aspiring professionals in the United States and abroad regarding effective intervention and treatment.

Extreme Events Institute

The Extreme Events Institute comprises the International Hurricane Research Center and the Disaster Resilience and Climate in the Americas Program. It serves as a global hub for multidisciplinary research, education and training in natural hazards and disaster risk management. Over the past three years, funding from the United States Agency for International Development, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the National Science Foundation and other sources has supported work in wind engineering, storm surge modeling, economic loss modeling and disaster risk reduction in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Forensic Institute for Research, Service and Technology (FIU-FIRST)

The Forensic Institute for Research, Service and Technology brings together programs that establish FIU’s deep expertise in the arenas of forensic science, forensic services and justice administration. The innovative, multidisciplinary resource supports education, professional training, scientific research, technology transfer and legal and policy initiatives related to criminal, computer, nuclear and environmental forensics.

Institute of Water and Environment

The Institute of Water and Environment represents one of the largest groups of faculty and students associated with water and environmental science in the United States. Increased concern over the preservation of Florida’s natural areas has created a critical need for accurate, unbiased scientific information in support of decisions affecting the sustainability of fragile resources. Institute researchers are helping preserve freshwater and marine ecosystems for future generations.

STEM Transformation Institute

The STEM Transformation Institute is dedicated to advancing research and practice in evidence-based STEM education by impacting over 14,000 student enrollments on campus and over 5,000 K-12 students in Miami-Dade County. The institute draws upon local and national institutions as well as business and industry in support of creating a living laboratory for developing future STEM professionals, especially those from statistically underrepresented groups, as a response to the 2010 national call to train 100,000 new STEM teachers and an additional one million STEM workers by 2020.

With strategic support, an emerging preeminent program can build upon its distinctive merits, strengths and successes to earn the preeminent program designation.

Brain, Behavior and the Environment Program

The Brain, Behavior + Environment Program is a multidisciplinary initiative that unites the dynamic and diverse neuroscience community toward three goals: to create and empower research programs focused on environmental causes of neurological disease; to devise strategies and develop treatments for neurological disorders using novel neuroscience and engineering tools as well as pharmacological approaches; and to establish a rich educational resource in South Florida to educate students, clinicians, the public and health officials.

FIU Tropics

FIU Tropics’ core objectives are to provide a comprehensive assessment of tropical biodiversity and its associated societal values, and to conserve and manage critically threatened tropical species and ecosystems. The program studies new and underutilized crops and sustainable growing systems to improve food security and local livelihoods in South Florida and other tropical regions; develops products, including medicine and food, to improve health and generate employment opportunities; creates data-driven solutions for conserving tropical biodiversity; and trains biodiversity scientists.

Health Inequities and Disparities Program

The Health Inequities and Disparities Program is a multidisciplinary group of faculty and students committed to identifying and eliminating health inequities and disparities as well as healthcare barriers associated with race, ethnicity, gender and sexual orientation. They are dedicated to conducting community-based participatory research to determine the impact of ethnicity on the health outcomes of those who suffer with HIV or substance abuse; developing and testing culturally appropriate substance abuse and HIV prevention and treatment programs; and training the next generation of researchers.

The Kimberly Green Latin American and Caribbean Center is designated by the U.S. Department of Education as a National Resource Center on Latin America, recognizing it as one of the top Latin American and Caribbean centers in the world. The leading international center within the Steven J. Green School of International and Public Affairs, LACC promotes the study of Latin America and the Caribbean by forging linkages across the Americas. Its innovative education and research is aimed at better understanding the most urgent issues confronting the region.

Translational Molecular Discoveries

The Translational Molecular Discoveries program builds upon the university’s existing Biomolecular Sciences Institute to integrate basic and applied research in support of human health and wellness. It comprises the work of dozens of faculty in institutes, centers and laboratories across the university as well as collaborations with health organizations, research centers and other universities in Florida. Areas of focus include drug discovery to meet the urgent need for new therapies against cancer, antibioticresistant superbugs and neurodegenerative diseases.

The Wolfsonian Public Humanities Lab (WPHL)

The Wolfsonian Public Humanities Lab fosters research, teaching and outreach activities that encourage individuals and communities to reflect upon and celebrate diverse heritage, traditions and history. A collaboration of the Department of History, along with other humanities programs within the Steven J. Green School of International & Public Affairs, College of Arts, Sciences & Education and College of Communication, Architecture + the Arts, it takes advantage of FIU’s status as an urban research institution to capitalize on the creative, scholarly and teaching expertise of faculty and curatorial professionals.
