Chairman’s Message In January 2018, I re-assumed leadership of the Jewish Museum of FloridaFIU after serving as president from 2006 through 2008. My motivation was quite simple: I wanted to further support my long-term “investment” of time and money in the Museum as part of the FIU family. The Giller family arrived in Florida over 100 years ago and has been involved since the inception of the Museum and its predecessor, the MOSAIC traveling exhibit. My father, Norman M. Giller, was the Founding President of the Jewish Museum of Florida in 1992 and served as the guiding leader of the Museum for over 10 years. With the Museum’s creation, I became the architect and the general contractor for the development of the Museum, starting with the conversion of the original synagogue at 301 Washington Avenue into the Museum’s birthplace. I continued with the renovations of the Symons Building at 311 Washington Avenue. Finally, I added the skylighted connector gallery between the two buildings. The Museum has been my passion for over 25 years! My favorite part of the Museum is watching the sun shine through the stained glass windows. The vivid blues, reds, and yellows create a spiritual aura as the colorful patterns move across the Museum’s interior. Sometimes, they highlight an architectural element – the bimah rail, chandelier, or the former Ark – and sometimes they just blend together in an ephemeral glow. It’s symbolic of the Florida Jewish experience – highlighted individual experiences as well as the melded Jewish community’s diverse glow in the Florida sunshine. I envision the Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU rising to greater prominence as one of the leading Jewish museums in America, not only as the academic center of the Florida Jewish experience, but as a unique architectural experience for visitors from all over the world. During 2018, the vision fulfillment has begun under the leadership of Susan Gladstone, our new Executive Director. With the assistance of a re-organized staff, the Museum has produced outstanding programs, exhibits, and special

STAINED GLASS WINDOWS A
highlight of your visit to the Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU is the 80 magnificent stained glass windows that adorn the main gallery.
When the building was constructed in 1936, it originally featured clear glass windows. These allowed for ventilation and natural light but the open windows let in street noise and beach sand and the bright sunshine blinded the congregants. In the early 1940s, air conditioning was installed and the windows could remain closed, thus solving the noise and sand problem but not the bright sunshine. The congregation’s Rabbi Moses Mescheloff (1936-1954) came up with a solution—stained glass windows to filter and diffuse the light. Rabbi Mescheloff designed the 80 windows and on July 5, 1940 “took the sketches to Brown,” a fabricator in Hialeah. Each window contains symbolic imagery. The general design incorporates the pomegranate and grape clusters. The seeds of the pomegranate represent the 613 “Mitzvot” (Jewish commandments) and the grape clusters signify the physical blessing of the Promised Land of Israel. The large window above the Ark portrays a shofar or ram’s horn, announcing the coming of the Messiah (Isaiah 52:7) and the large one above the entrance depicts Mount Sinai. Visitors will notice the two sets of windows on the east wall, framing the Ark, that display “The Two Tablets of the Law” (symbolic of the Torah) and a parchment manuscript, “The Oral Law.” Along the north and south walls are four sets of three windows. The first set shows an oil lamp, a shofar and a bouquet of flowers. The lamp depicts the festival of Chanukah, the shofar denotes Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur and the flowers represent Passover, Shavuot and Succot. The second and third set of three on each side represent the twelve months of the year and each has its own Zodiac symbol and Hebrew name of the month. The larger windows between them illustrate the “Tree of Life.” The last set of three windows portray hands, symbolizing Avodah (Temple service), the hands raised in blessing, and grasping hands representing “the giving of loving kindness.” The fragile stained glass is protected on the building’s exterior.

Spotlight on Docents
Howard Brayer Docent and Walking Tour Guide In late 2011, Howard Brayer retired from the budget office of the Federal Department of Education in Washington, DC and moved to Miami Beach with his husband Donald Szumowski. Almost immediately, he looked for volunteer opportunities and became a docent at the Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU and a volunteer tour guide for the Miami Design Preservation League, conducting walking tours focused on the general history and architecture of Miami Beach. Within a few months, Howard used his love of history to create a Jewish themed walking tour of Miami Beach for JMOF-FIU. The two-hour tour includes an overview of more than 100 years of Jewish history of Miami Beach while participants walk the neighborhoods surrounding JMOF-FIU. Several months after the Jewish Walking Tours began JMOF-FIU presented an exhibition called Growers, Grocers & Gefilte Fish that highlighted Florida Jews in the food industry. In conjunction with the exhibit, Howard added stops at four restaurants, to create the Jewish Food Walking Tour. Both the Jewish Food Tour and the original Jewish Walking Tours continue to be very popular offerings throughout the year. To date more than 2,000 museum guests have taken Howard’s tours. Howard enjoys meeting people on the walking tours, imparting what he has learned about Miami Beach, and learning from them as they share their own family stories. “On the tours, people like to reminisce about visiting their grandparents during the Jewish hey-day on Miami Beach, in the 1960’s and 1970’s,” says Howard of his many guests. “Whether participants are intimately familiar with the city or are visiting for the first time, those days are relived through my words and pictures.”
About the The Jewish Walking Tour The 2-hour Jewish Walking Tour
When Howard and Donald moved to Miami Beach, they knew no one in the area. Now they feel part of a real Miami Beach community. Donald now works part-time in the Museum’s gift shop. Not only does Howard love being a museum tour guide, but the people who have taken his tour love him back. Here are some recent reviews from Trip Advisor:

About the Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU: The Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU is located in the heart of Miami Beach’s Art Deco District. It serves as a major cultural attraction and source of information for a wide audience of residents, tourists, students and scholars of all ages and backgrounds from throughout the state, nation, and the world. JMOF-FIU is the only museum that collects preserves and interprets the fascinating story of more than 250 years of Florida Jewish history, art and culture. The museum is housed in two beautifully restored historic buildings that once served Miami Beach’s first Jewish congregation. The original synagogue was built in 1929, and the second, built in 1936, was designed by Art Deco architect Henry Hohauser and features nearly 80 stained glass windows, a copper dome, marble bimah and many Art Deco features including chandeliers and sconces. The museum’s core exhibition is Mosaic: Jewish Life in Florida, originated by Marcia Jo Zerivitz, LHD, Founding Executive Director. In 2013, the museum entered into a historic partnership with Florida International University, igniting a new era of interdisciplinary education and research that combines a localized view of Jewish culture and history with the global expertise of faculty who specialize in the extraordinary and unparalleled diversity and plurality of Jewish communities all across the world. The Jewish Museum of Florida is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums.
