BUILDING POWERFUL PUBLIC HEALTH ALLIANCES AT GLOBAL CONFERENCE The Global Health Consortium (GHC) at Stempel College hosted the 8th Annual International Global Health Conference at FIU in May 2018. Key players in public health developed relationships across borders as 130 experts from 27 countries participated. Attendees included representatives of the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization, National Institutes of Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Carlos Slim Foundation, four international scientific associations and many universities and professional associations.
ADVOCATING FOR CHILDREN WITH DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES Social work master’s student Tatyana Malinovskaya-Ward was selected to attend the Association of University Centers on Disabilities Trainee Policy Summit and Disability Policy Seminar in April 2018 in Washington, D.C., due to her internship efforts with the Dr. John T. Macdonald Foundation School Health Initiative. As part of her internship, she was required to create an advocacy project. A HEALTHIER WAY WITH SDA The Student Dietetics Association (SDA) plans and coordinates volunteer events with organizations and hospitals throughout the community. In 2017, SDA teamed with Baptist Hospital and Common Threads to create Recipes for Healthy Cooking classes (pictured here). In this initiative, SDA members assisted patients in preparing well-balanced meals. The group’s supermarket tours (see photo page 6), which show FIU students how to grocery shop like a nutritionist, is another popular initiative. Most recently, SDA worked with the Association of Graduate Students of Dietetics and Nutrition to introduce a career fair. The event brought together registered dietitians from the fields of pediatrics, sports nutrition, eating disorders and holistic nutrition, allowing students the opportunity to network with professionals and learn more about the profession.

SEE YOU ON CNN Social work student Daniel Alvarez was interviewed by CNN in September 2016 for his work on human trafficking and the importance of student involvement on the issue. Alvarez felt compelled to become active in social causes after returning from a service trip to Colombia in 2011 with the nonprofit Children Beyond Our Borders.
PH.D. CANDIDATE CURATES SHELTERING SURVIVORS Mitra Naseh was guest curator in 2017 for the exhibition Sheltering Survivors at the Coral Gables Museum. A doctoral candidate in social work, Naseh was born in Tehran during the Iran-Iraq War of the 1980s. She considered the exhibition an opportunity to start a conversation, beyond the academic context, about the world’s forced displacement crisis.
THREE EARN BILL AND MELINDA GATES FOUNDATION INTERNSHIPS Three students participated in a highly competitive, 12-week paid internship in the summer of 2018 that was sponsored by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Master of Public Health students Daniel Tirado (biostatistics) and Donald Yanogo (health promotion and disease prevention) and doctoral student Angel Algarin (epidemiology) worked alongside top-tier global health researchers who tackle the world’s most critical health inequities.
STEMPEL STUDENTS LEARN FROM HURRICANE EVACUEES In the aftermath of Hurricane Irma, social work and public health students were able to interact with Monroe County residents who evacuated to a special needs shelter at FIU. The opportunity provided insights into challenges faced by displaced persons in a natural disaster. The students also learned about career opportunities with the U.S. Public Health Services, which operated the shelter.

Research Highlights At Stempel College, our focus is nurturing promising and creative minds and encouraging the free and passionate exchange of ideas between faculty, post doctoral fellows and students. Maybe that’s why we’ve attracted a record number of sponsored research funding the past two years. Faculty win largest single grant in FIU history In fall 2017, faculty in Stempel College won a $13.1 million grant from the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) to build Florida’s first health disparities Research Center at a Minority Institution (RCMI). The FIU-RCMI at Stempel College will focus on reducing substance use problems and HIV and will work in partnership with South Florida Communities. Evaluating PrEP intervention for women of color in South Florida Dr. Jessy G. Devieux and Dr. Mario De La Rosa are co-principal investigators on a three-year grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA). The purpose of the grant is to help South Florida women of color understand and utilize pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), an oral medication used in high-risk populations, as a protective measure for maintaining sexual health and HIV-free lives. Studying the role of cocaine use in liver disease in people with HIV Dr. Marianna K. Baum received a $5.4 million multiyear National Institutes of Health (NIH) grant to explore the role of cocaine use in the progression of liver disease in people with HIV. Cocaine puts patients at risk for treatment failure, lower adherence to medications and may have an independent effect on liver disease. Examining long-term effects of ethnic discrimination among Hispanic adolescents Dr. Miguel Angel Cano received funding from the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) to understand and reduce alcohol use disparities among Latino teenagers 14 to 17 years of age.

Reversing long-term damage of chronic lead exposure in children As principal investigator of a study funded by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), Dr. Tomas R. Guilarte has discovered a potential therapy that could reverse lead’s harmful effects in children, including learning disabilities and behavioral problems. Studying neurodegeneration in Hispanic and white non-Hispanic older adults Dr. Shanna Burke was honored by the American Society of Clinical Psychopharmacology with its New Investigator Award for her exploration of “Cognitive and Functional Performance and Measures of Neurodegeneration in Hispanic and White non-Hispanic Older Adults” in Miami-Dade County. An adductomic approach to analyzing DNA damage A study by Dr. Marcus S. Cooke and two visiting research fellows in the department, Dr. Mu-Rong Chao and Dr. Chiung-Wen Hu from Chung Shan Medical University in Taiwan, that was published in the Archive of Toxicology described an optimized “adductomic” approach to the integrated analysis of the totality of cellular DNA damage. The study extends the adductomic analysis of cellular DNA to urine, which represents a novel procedure for examining the different varieties of DNA damage formed in the body following environmental exposures.

Once a Panther, Always a Panther Our alumni take an active role in helping prepare today’s students to become tomorrow’s leaders. Many alumni return to campus to speak with students about their respective fields and to offer career preparation advice. Additionally, two of Stempel College’s signature events feature alumni – the university’s Panther Alumni Week panel and round-table discussions. Both events bring graduates back to campus and provide current students and alumni with a valuable opportunity to network. Our alumni also serve as preceptors and internship supervisors for our students. Our graduates say this is one of Stempel College’s greatest strengths. And because our alumni know the strength of our programs, they let us know about job vacancies where they work because they prefer hiring graduates of programs that they graduated from.
