Chairman’s Message The Museum has been my passion for over 25 years! This year, I continue to support my long-term investment of time and money in the Museum as part of the FIU family. The Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU is rising to greater prominence as one of the leading Jewish museums in America, not only as the academic center of the Florida Jewish experience, but as a unique architectural experience for visitors from all over the world. During 2019, our vision fulfillment continued under the energetic leadership of our Executive Director Susan Gladstone. With the assistance of an empowered staff, the Museum has produced outstanding programs, compelling exhibits, and exciting special events (see the Director’s Report). The Advisory Board has made personal commitments to “own” a part of the Museum’s future with both time and money. This past year, we embarked upon needed physical improvements to our architectural gem. We replaced the original copper dome, made structural repairs to the parapet, and replaced the roof on the 301 building. We began the redesign process for MOSAIC, our core exhibit, which will incorporate 21st century technology and interactive exhibit concepts to better tell the story of the Jewish experience in Florida. Looking forward, April 2020 will mark the 25th anniversary of the Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU! It will be a moment of celebration and great pride in our Museum. It will be a time to reflect on our past as well as our future. The dream of Marcia Jo Zerivitz has come a long way since 1995. I am looking forward to celebrating with you. To fulfill the Museum’s destiny, significant additional private and corporate support is needed to sustain the wonderful cultural and academic programs that are part of the JMOF-FIU experience. We need your personal commitment to “own” part of the Museum: Partake of the unique exhibits, enrich our collection of Jewish artifacts, support our academic programs, engage new friends with the Museum, and provide funds to fulfill our vision.

Executive Director’s Report It is an exciting time at the Jewish Museum of Florida–FIU. We are the Jewish museum for the entire state of Florida and one of only two Jewish museums in the country to be connected to a state university. As we look ahead to our 25th anniversary in 2020, we are developing a five-year strategic plan, one that furthers our mission of advancing the understanding and appreciation of Jewish culture; preserving and sharing the history and stories of Judaism in Florida; and contributing to FIU’s presence as a major international university. We strive to do all of this while also drawing on our values of heritage, creativity, culture, education, and inclusivity. We are proud to be part of FIU, which expands our reach and scope. Our collection is activated through many of the University’s academic programs, such as the Jewish Studies Certificate Program and the Holocaust Studies Initiative of the Steven J. Green School of International & Public Affairs. Spearheading these efforts—as well as the Museum’s world-class lecture series—is our Academic Director Dr. Tudor Parfitt, Director of the Global Jewish Studies Program at the Green School and Distinguished Professor of the University. We also benefit from partnerships with our sister museums, the Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum–FIU and The Wolfsonian– FIU. In addition, the Museum serves as an extended classroom for thousands of Miami-Dade County Public School students, inspiring them to explore their own cultural heritage and those of all ethnic groups in our multicultural society. Over the past two years, the Jewish Museum of Florida–FIU has made some notable new inroads—developing programming around Art Basel, for example. Shows such as “Subject to Interpretation” and “Daniel Chimowitz: Walking Canvases” are

IN 2019, JMOF-FIU RESTORED THE ICONIC COPPER DOME that capped the Beth Jacob Main Sanctuary since its construction in 1936. After many years of leaking and patching, we have a new copper skin handcrafted by one of the few copper roofing teams remaining in America today. The needed renovation was possible with assistance provided by the FIU Foundation. Bright and shiny right after installation, the copper began to acquire its patina immediately due to the moist salt air coming from the Atlantic Ocean. The dome was capped with a new copper Star of David built to withstand hurricane winds. The original Star of David and an original copper shingle were retained as part of the Museum’s Jewish artifacts collection. This was truly a team effort coordinated by FIU Facilities Management, its construction manager, DPR Construction and our general contractor, Design Build Construction. The workmanship in this project is incredible and the museum looks even more impressive than before. The entire neighborhood has been made more beautiful! Stop by the museum and see for yourself.

Coming in 2020 Judith Leiber: Master Craftsman Judith Leiber, legendary American handbag designer, was also a Holocaust survivor, master craftsman and the first woman to be admitted into the Hungarian Hand Bag Guild. Judith started her own brand in 1963 and went on to receive many awards throughout her career, including the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Council of Fashion Designers in 1994. Her bags are in private collections throughout the world, as well as in the Smithsonian, The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Victoria and Albert Museum. This exhibition brings together an astonishing collection of handbags she designed, along with a visual look at her life through historical photographs.

Bernstein: The Power of Music is the first large-scale museum exhibition to illustrate Leonard Bernstein’s life, Jewish identity, and social activism. Audiences may be familiar with many of Bernstein’s works, notably West Side Story, but not necessarily with how he responded to the political and social crises of his day. Visitors will find an individual who expressed the restlessness, anxiety, fear and hope of an American Jew living through World War II and the Holocaust, Vietnam, and turbulent social change—what Bernstein referred to as his “search for a solution to the 20th-century crisis of faith.” The exhibition explores his Jewish identity and social activism in the context of his position as an American conductor and his works as a composer. It features interactive media and sound installations along approximately 100 historic artifacts, including Bernstein’s piano, marked-up scores, conducting suit, annotated copy of Romeo and Juliet used for the development of West Side Story, personal family Judaica, composing easel and a number of objects from his studio.

2020 will mark the 25th anniversary of the Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU. In celebration, the museum will feature exhibitions throughout the year showcasing the many and often diverse Jewish communities across the state, in conjunction with treasures from the collection.

Special Exhibition Photos by Gloria O’Connell

During the month of September, Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU Board member, Neil Dern, presented his photo exhibition, Out of the Ashes, at a special Round Table at Reagan House, the home of FIU President Mark Rosenberg. Having already been invited by Dr. Rosenberg to give the commencement speech for the spring 2019 Commencement of the Business School, he was then invited to put his exhibition on display at Reagan House in honor of the anniversary of 9-11. Neil is a survivor of the attack on the World Trade Center buildings and used the art of photography, specifically photographing the rebuilding of the buildings into a memorial, as a way to both heal himself, and to educate others about that day in our history. Neil’s description of his photography process and his personal experiences were very poignant and all guests at the event were very moved by his presentation.

The mission of FIU’s ambitious Next Horizon $750,000,000 fundraising campaign is to elevate the university to greater levels of excellence in teaching, research, entrepreneurship and public policy.

The graduates of FIU are making a real difference in today’s world, and helping shape tomorrow’s because of their academic experiences on this campus. From the day we opened our doors as Miami’s only public university, FIU students, faculty and alumni have been a mainstay of forward-thinking solutions and an engine of progress for Miami and beyond.

Among the campaign’s objectives is to increase student scholarships and lessen the financial burden of higher education, giving every student the opportunity to transform their lives and future.

Let’s reach the Next Horizon together to enhance educational experiences, optimize 21st-century teaching, accelerate research, and escalate discovery to enterprise so we can advance vibrant and healthy communities everywhere.

Jorge Bargman Following his retirement as a textile engineer, Jorge Bargman began volunteering as a docent at the Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU. Since then Jorge has volunteered more than 2,400 hours. It all began in 2001, when Jorge started looking for some sort of volunteer work where he could return to society what society had given to him. He found several things, which all seemed very fulfilling, and then the museum showed up in the Internet. He came in, trained to give tours and was then “thrown to the lions.” “What a wonderful Circus it became” said Jorge. Jorge was born in Montevideo, studied in the United States, and has lived in Miami Beach for the past 21 years. He is married for 58 years to his wonderful wife, Barbara and they have one daughter. The Bargmans have lived in many places including Uruguay, Venezuela. Puerto Rico, Boston, South Carolina and now in Miami Beach. “Volunteering at JMOF-FIU has been and continues to give me enormous satisfaction.” “To hear a Jewish visitor say “I didn’t know that!”, to watch the wonder in the faces of non-Jewish foreign visitors at the true stories we tell, to talk to U.S. Customs officers about our Jewish community, to receive a letter from a ten year old child thanking me for taking him around, that is the meaning of the word mitzvah.” “Add to that the opportunity to learn from our visitors, laymen, rabbis, priests, Jews, Gentiles, Muslims; they all add something which I then can tell future visitors” says Jorge of his museum experiences. Jorge is looking forward to returning soon and thanks the Museum for giving him the opportunity to serve, and have a lot of fun at the same time. The museum is

About the Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU: The Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU is located in the heart of Miami Beach’s Art Deco District. It serves as a major cultural attraction and source of information for a wide audience of residents, tourists, students and scholars of all ages and backgrounds from throughout the state, nation and the world. JMOF-FIU is the only museum that collects preserves and interprets the fascinating story of more than 250 years of Florida Jewish history, art and culture. The museum is housed in two beautifully restored historic buildings that once served Miami Beach’s first Jewish congregation. The original synagogue was built in 1929, and the second, built in 1936, was designed by Art Deco architect Henry Hohauser and features nearly 80 stained glass windows, a copper dome, marble bimah and many Art Deco features including chandeliers and sconces. The museum’s core exhibition is Mosaic: Jewish Life in Florida, originated by Marcia Jo Zerivitz, LHD, Founding Executive Director. In 2013, the museum entered into a historic partnership with Florida International University, igniting a new era of interdisciplinary education and research that combines a localized view of Jewish culture and history with the global expertise of faculty who specialize in the extraordinary and unparalleled diversity and plurality of Jewish communities all across the world. The Jewish Museum of Florida is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums.
