Doctor of Athletic Training The Athletic Training Department at Florida International University is part of the Nicole Wertheim College of Nursing & Health Sciences and is proud to be the first in the Southeast U.S. to offer a Doctor of Athletic Training (DAT) degree. Professional practicing athletic trainers enrolled in the FIU Doctor of Athletic Training (DAT) degree seek to advance their career opportunities by integrating the latest evidence for clinical practice leadership, embracing a diverse and global society, utilizing contemporary approaches for technology, incorporating best practices for life-long learning and educational endeavors, and igniting their entrepreneurial passion. The FIU DAT curriculum is comprised of 48 total credits, over 6 semesters, delivered predominantly online with supplemental face-to-face instruction during Innovation Residency weekend (Miami, Florida) and covers the following content areas: • Entrepreneurial Leadership (12 Credits) • Academic Leadership (12 Credits) • Athletic Training Globalization (3 Credits) • Applied Scholarship (9 Credits) • DAT Capstone Project (12 Credits)

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS Students are admitted to the FIU DAT program twice a year: Fall (August 1 deadline) and spring (November 1 deadline) semesters. Applicants for consideration are asked to submit the following: • Verification of a master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution with a minimum of 27 credits of graduate education* • Official transcript demonstrating a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) in graduate coursework • Proof of athletic training certification through the Board of Certification* • Proof of state regulation credential (if applicable in the student’s current state of residence/practice)* • Verification of 2-3 years of athletic training work experience (recommended) • Three professional letters of recommendation • Current resume or curriculum vitae • A statement of professional and personal goals to include your reasoning for wanting to obtain the FIU DAT *Athletic trainers who possess a Bachelor’s Degree as one’s highest degree may inquire about our bridge to the FIU DAT route. Health care providers practicing outside the United States may be considered for matriculation into the FIU DAT with documentation of having substantial equivalence of an athletic trainer as defined by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE).

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS ENTREPRENEURIAL LEADERSHIP CORE (12 CREDITS) Entrepreneurial Leadership in Athletic Training (3 credits): This course is designed to examine entrepreneurial leadership and business strategies specifically related to the profession of athletic training. Topics that will be covered include characteristics associated with entrepreneurism, innovation, and identifying niches. Successful Business Strategies in Athletic Training (3 credits): This course addresses the various strategies associated with establishing a business structure, creating a market for one’s business, management and leadership principles, and other critical components of starting and operating a successful business venture. Athletic Training Consulting (3 credits): This course identifies the various opportunities for athletic trainers to consult within and outside the profession by developing the skills required to successfully offer a service, product, or information to benefit others in return for equitable remuneration. Financial Planning for Athletic Training (3 credits): This course is specifically designed for the athletic training student to learn how to build a financial portfolio as it relates to professional and personal goals. ACADEMIC LEADERSHIP CORE (12 CREDITS) Navigating Academia in Athletic Training (3 credits): This foundational course introduces the athletic training student to the structure and governance of a college/ University academic setting. Common terms, titles, roles, expectations are discussed. The components of teaching, scholarship, service, advising and other critical expectations are included. Academic Leadership in Athletic Training (3 credits): This course addresses leadership styles most beneficial for athletic trainers working in a secondary school or college/University setting. Issues pertaining to human resources, personnel, supervision, performance appraisal, promotion and tenure, and others are discussed. Curricular Planning & Development in Athletic Training (3 credits): This course will introduce the athletic training student to necessary components of planning and developing a curriculum. Topics will include writing course syllabi, programmatic and regional accreditation, curricular sequencing, inter-professional education, and exam writing.

Teaching & Learning Strategies in Athletic Training (3 credits): This class focuses on common methods implemented the learning environment. Various teaching and learning style inventories will be introduced and analyzed for different settings and audiences. Students will have the opportunity to gain practical experience and reflect on best practices. ATHLETIC TRAINING GLOBALIZATION (3 CREDITS) Athletic Training Globalization (3 credits): Global initiatives are an important contemporary goal of the athletic training profession. This unique class prepares the athletic training student to develop competency in cultural awareness. Students develop a global awareness project that has the option of including International travel. APPLIED SCHOLARSHIP CORE (9 CREDITS) DAT Applied Scholarship I (3 credits): This course is one in a series of three courses designed to introduce one to applied scholarship. The purpose of this course is to critically analyze the components of translational research as it relates to clinical practice. Areas and types of research will guide one through understanding how clinically relevant research questions are developed, studied, and implemented into practice. DAT Applied Scholarship II (3 credits): This course is one in a series of three courses designed to introduce one to applied scholarship. The purpose of this course is to describe the publication process for poster and presentation submission for local, State, regional, National, and International journals and conferences. DAT Applied Scholarship III (3 credits): This course is one in a series of three courses designed to introduce one to applied scholarship. The purpose of this course is to prepare one to critically analyze both qualitative and quantitative literature as it relates to clinical practice and academia. Small Grant funding will also be introduced. DAT CAPSTONE PROJECT (12 CREDITS) DAT Capstone Project (12 credits): These sequential courses require students to develop a Capstone Project from either the Educational Leadership or Entrepreneurial Leadership Core track to deepen one’s understanding of the profession, enhance critical thinking ability, and further develop a specialized body of knowledge and skills under the guidance of faculty and leaders in the profession who are experts in specialty fields. These sequential classes culminate in a capstone project.

PROGRAM FEES The cost of tuition is $700 per credit hour and includes all University fees. This is the same for in-state, out-of-state, and foreign applicants.

RESIDENCY Students are required to attend a weekend residency annually on campus in Miami, Florida. During residency weekend, students enrolled in all cohorts will engage in challenging yet rewarding time with faculty and staff while sharing contemporary knowledge of athletic training. All expenses related to residency week are the responsibility of the student; however, the majority of meals will be provided by the program.
