t the FIU Nicole Wertheim College of Nursing & Health Sciences (NWCNHS), we make heroes. Our graduates have been on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic—from the nurses in
hospital emergency departments and ICUs to the physical therapists, occupational therapists, and speech therapists helping patients recover. Health Services Administration alumni coped with hospital capacity issues and provider burnout while athletic trainers adapted to the new world of telehealth to treat patients.
Our faculty and students also responded to the pandemic. They helped test more than 339,842 South Floridians at the COVID-19 testing site at Tamiami Park and provided training to military healthcare providers to prepare them to care for COVID patients at the Miami Beach Field Hospital. And they have helped administer more than 2,335 COVID-19 vaccines at our vaccine center on campus.
As Miami’s first and only public research university, it is FIU’s privilege and duty to educate future health professionals to serve the community. The College has over 2,500 students that mirror the diverse population of the region, with 86% identifying as minority. The majority of our graduates stay in South Florida where they fill a critical need for healthcare workers.
Now, we ask alumni and friends to partner with us in carrying out this essential mission. Your generosity today can help provide what it takes to make tomorrow’s heroes.

STAR CENTER During COVID-19, the College’s acclaimed Simulation Teaching and Research (STAR) Center allowed undergraduate nursing to pivot to increased simulated delivery of clinical training. The cutting-edge, 20,000-square-foot simulated hospital delivers healthcare scenarios in authentically recreated clinical settings, such as in the Jorge and Darlene Pérez Clinical Skills Lab.
DIANE RAMY FAULCONER CARE CENTER Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT), Occupational Therapy (OT) and Athletic Training students kept on track to graduation through the virtual and online offerings within the Diane Ramy Faulconer Collaborative Advanced Research & Rehabilitation (CARE) Center, a 16,000-square-foot facility focused on interdisciplinary healthcare and rehabilitation training, teaching, and research.
For the 2022 rankings, four of the College’s programs are included in U.S. News & World Report’s top 50 in the nation among public universities:

WHAT OUR HEROES NEED SCHOLARSHIPS In the 2019-20 academic year, the College awarded $745,319 to 233 students enrolled

in all NWCNHS programs. In nursing alone, the aggregate unmet need was $3.23 million, while the total unmet need for all students enrolled in the College was more than $19 million. Given the fact that federal aid does not fully meet the financial needs of students, scholarship support is vital in reducing their economic burden, thereby increasing retention, ensuring on-time graduation, and enabling NWCNHS to meet the increasing demand for minority healthcare professionals.
Your support can help fill this critical need. You can establish a scholarship open to all NWCNHS students or direct funds to students in a specific program. Scholarships focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) are welcome because they allow us to attract and graduate underrepresented students. These graduates help diversify the healthcare professions and care for the medically underserved in the community. Graduate nursing scholarships facilitate new nursing leaders who address the national shortage of nursing faculty and the changing needs in the healthcare workforce. Scholarships for health sciences students create the next generation of providers and leaders in cutting-edge rehabilitation care, enhanced modalities of therapies, and improved quality of life for their patients.

RESEARCH SUPPORT Participating in research is a requirement for all master’s and doctoral students. The experience prepares them to enhance patient care while also contributing to evidence-based practice, clinical and scientific literature, and educational and research design strategies. Endowed funds that support research help students undertake these critical investigations and build science in their practice fields. You can establish a research fund open to all NWCNHS students or restrict it to students in a program of your preference.
Miami’s only public research university, FIU holds the highest research classification—Carnegie Research 1 for Very High Research Activity.

ENDOWED FACULTY POSITIONS The marketplace for exceptional instructors and researchers is very competitive. Often, multiple institutions compete for a single outstanding faculty member. Gifts for endowed faculty positions, which support a faculty member’s research program, give NWCNHS an edge. They draw the very best faculty to the College where they mentor students and advance research in their fields. Their scholarly output lifts the quality and prestige of the program and contributes to increased national rankings and recruitment of top students.

member, providing top-level support for research, travel, and graduate assistantships. An endowed distinguished professorship enhances a faculty member’s research program by providing supplemental funds to support scholarly activities. A distinguished visiting professorship is occupied by a prominent scholar or executive on a rotating basis—typically for one year.
