Monday, August 1, 2022, 10:00 a.m. Commencement Speaker The Honorable Jeanette M. Nuñez, ’94, ’98 Lieutenant Governor, State of Florida A Miami native, Jeanette M. Nuñez was elected Florida’s first Latina lieutenant governor in 2018. In this role, she oversees the Florida Department of Health and serves as chair of the board of directors of Space Florida, an entity responsible for all aspects of the state’s aerospace industry. Additionally, she is chair of both Florida’s Cybersecurity Task Force and Women’s Suffrage Centennial and is a member of the Statewide Council on Human Trafficking. Nuñez served as a state representative in the Florida House of Representatives from 2010 to 2018 and was named speaker pro tempore from 2016 to 2018. As a legislator, she was appointed chair of the Select Committee on Hurricane Response and Preparedness, was the vice chair of the Appropriations Committee and served on the Rules and Policy Committee. Prior to that, she chaired the Health Quality, Government Operations and Technology Appropriations, and Higher Education and Workforce Subcommittees. Notably, she was also a member of Florida’s Constitution Revision Commission in 2017. Nuñez began her healthcare career working at Jackson Health System in 2004 as the state director for government relations, handling all aspects of the hospital’s state affairs. In 2006, she was promoted to vice president of government relations where she oversaw local, state and federal affairs. She has served on numerous boards and healthcare organizations, including the National Association of Public Hospitals Fellowship Program. In 2010, Nuñez became vice president of community affairs for Kendall Regional and Aventura Hospitals and Medical Centers. In late 2013, she began her own consulting firm, OnPoint Strategies, providing Jackson Health System with strategic advice on service line and business development. Nuñez served on the U.S. Department of Education’s National Assessment Governing Board from 2016-2019. Over the years, Nuñez has demonstrated her ongoing commitment to the South Florida community with involvement in the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce, Leadership Miami and the Women’s Healthcare Executive Network, among other organizations. In 2007, she was named Hispanic Woman of Distinction. From 2007 to 2015, she served on the board of Kristi House, an organization dedicated to children who are victims of sexual abuse. Nuñez is a two-time graduate of FIU, having earned a bachelor’s degree in international relations and political science and a master’s degree in public administration. She also earned a Six Sigma Certificate from the University of Miami. Through the years, Nuñez has served as an adjunct professor and guest lecturer at FIU. She and husband Adrian Nuñez are the proud parents of three children – Megan, Justin and Jason. Summer 2022 Commencement 13

The Honors College The Honors College provides highly motivated students with a cutting-edge education that complements their majors and prepares them to successfully compete for graduate school or employment. The heart of the college is its creative, active, and supportive community of outstanding students, superb teachers, accomplished researchers, and dedicated staff. Honors College scholars are admitted competitively into a transformational environment featuring problem-based experiential learning, active mentoring, and interdisciplinarity. The curriculum emphasizes critical, integrative, and creative thinking; team and independent research; oral and written communication; and integration of class work with the world outside the university. Students choose from an array of advanced multidisciplinary seminars that complement their major studies; study abroad; and/or extended research through the groundbreaking Advanced Research and Creativity in Honors (ARCH) program. The College also provides unique, focused tracks in pre-med/health professions, innovation/entrepreneurship, and law, with Early Assurance Programs in law, medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, and osteopathy. Students can live in the Honors College Building, taking advantage of its extensive Honors living-learning community and co-curricular opportunities, with access to high-tech innovation and video labs, as well as IT support. The College’s Career Center guarantees an internship to any student seeking one, and provides training in real-world social and business skills. Honors students embrace civic responsibility, and engage in service-research that directly benefits external communities, such as the Worlds Ahead Honors-Sweetwater Partnership.

Phi Beta Kappa Phi Beta Kappa (PBK) is America’s most prestigious academic honor society. Since 1776, Phi Beta Kappa has championed education, fostered freedom of thought, and recognized academic excellence. PBK honors the best and brightest liberal arts and sciences undergraduates from 286 top schools across the nation through a highly selective, merit-based invitation process. PBK advocates for the importance of liberal arts and sciences education and equips members with information and tools to thoughtfully engage in American society as leaders, volunteers, and citizens. It is a distinct honor to be elected to PBK.
