The Applied Research Center (ARC) at Florida International University specializes in solving real-world problems through multidisciplinary research. ARC connects government agencies, private companies and industry experts to our top researchers across all disciplines including the physical and social sciences and engineering. We foster the free-flowing exchange of ideas to ensure that creativity and innovation find application in the rapidly changing world. Focused on energy and environment, information technology, and policy innovation, ARC also provides workforce development programs and student internships to create a pipeline of graduating scientists and engineers that have hands-on experience, which is of critical importance to today’s employers. Valuing client relationships, ARC is committed to producing project deliverables on time and within budget. Since our founding in 1995, the center has executed more than 150 teaming or nondisclosure agreements including joint projects with the United States Department of Defense, Department of Energy, architectural and engineering firms, as well as small businesses. Services include business planning, certification training, project management training, mentored student internships, online training and leadership programs. Our staff consists of multicultural, multilingual professionals, many of whom are certified Project Management Professionals or Professional Engineers. Under the leadership of its executive director, ARC reports to FIU’s Vice President of Research. ARC has an external advisory board encompassing leaders from the private and public sectors. The FIU Applied Research Center Council, comprised of university deans, executives and faculty, guides the development of ARC’s myriad programs.

About Florida International University Florida International University (FIU) is Miami-Dade County’s first public, four-year research university. With more than 52,000 students, 1,000+ full-time faculty members, and nearly 200,000 alumni, FIU is one of South Florida’s anchor institutions. FIU offers more than 180 bachelor, master and doctoral degree programs in its colleges and schools and is first in the nation in awarding bachelor’s and master’s degrees to Hispanics. Recently, the university has achieved several notable milestones, including the establishment of South Florida’s only public College of Medicine, and the accreditation of its College of Law. FIU is worlds ahead in its commitment to learning, research, entrepreneurship, innovation and creativity so our graduates are prepared to succeed in a global marketplace. We are dedicated to collaborative problemsolving in partnership with community advocates who share our commitment to effect change through the power of public higher education. FIU has more than 80 centers, institutes and core science facilities including the Aquarius Reef Base, the world’s only undersea research lab as well as the International Hurricane Center’s Wall of Wind, the largest and most powerful university research facility of its kind, capable of simulating a Category 5 hurricane. FIU also features the International Forensic Research Institute, which serves local and national law enforcement efforts in the application of scientific principles to the administration of justice, and the Latin American and Caribbean Center, which includes nearly 200 affiliated faculty focused on solutions for the dynamic region.

Energy and Environment FIU is a global leader in applied solutions for the environment and sustainability. The Applied Research Center – in collaboration with the university’s colleges and schools – has expertise, instrumentation, dedicated laboratories and pilot-scale facilities to tackle multidisciplinary problems pertaining to: • Environmental remediation, monitoring, instrumentation and management • Environmental and regional planning • Mechanics and materials specializing in composites • Radioactive waste processing and management • Water treatment, purification, management and distribution • Deactivation and decommissioning of nuclear facilities Further research in various areas of the environment and energy industry allows the center to be a key player in assisting federal and state agencies as well as private industry partners in areas that span applied research to engineering and implementing solutions. Research includes aerospace, sustainability and green energy (such as solar, wind and biofuels), nuclear sciences, marine science and coastal engineering. The center also has capabilities in ocean process studies, including deep water and coastal ocean-shelf-basin interactions and transport via tracers of different kinds. ARC also works in partnership with the School of Environment, Arts and Society in the College of Arts & Sciences on a joint marine sciences program, with an emphasis on pollutant dispersal in the ocean and the development of sensor and data networks. The school’s resources include the Aquarius Reef Base off the Florida Keys and labs at the Southeast Environmental Research Center, dedicated to research efforts in the threatened environments of the southeastern United States.

Information Technology The Applied Research Center’s information technology (IT) professionals have extensive experience in: • Enterprise application development

• Mobile solutions

• Database management

• Cyber security

• Business intelligence

• Geographic information systems (GIS)

ARC is contributing to the security of cyber environments through sponsored research in cyberspace technology testing, infrastructure and workforce development. The research covers the specific areas of cyberspace architectures and frameworks, multi-agent systems for network monitoring and control, visualization concepts and technologies, cyber resilience, reliability, efficiency, information security management and data anomalies. ARC’s state-of-the-art information technology infrastructure provides support to various clients, including the Department of Defense’s Test Resource Management Center (DOD-TRMC) and the Department of Energy’s Office of Environmental Management (DOE-EM). The IT Group builds custom enterprise solutions, using multitier, service-oriented architecture on the Microsoft platform. Our clients include the U.S. Department of Energy, U.S. Department of Defense and various mentor-protégé programs, including Montgomery Watson, Earth Tech, Bell Helicopters, AECOM Technology Corporation, Jacobs, Northrop Grumman, SAIC and Battelle. We also support the administrative, research, instructional and outreach activities of the university in a risk-managed, costeffective and continuously improved environment. We develop intuitive and elegant mobile applications by providing the highest quality work product at every point within our software engineering processes. We will work closely with your organization to ensure a successful delivery by leveraging our deep mobile experience and a proven delivery approach. ARC will help you to create a thoughtful development plan, provide recommendations, and deliver the right mobile application for you and your customers.

Policy Innovation The Applied Research Center harnesses FIU’s overall capacity in the physical and social sciences from its colleges, schools and centers to provide unmatched capabilities in the applied sciences and public policy agenda. ARC has a well-established global network of thought leaders and practitioners from industry, government and academic institutions. It offers decision-makers real-time research, assessments and analyses using a multidisciplinary and multicultural approach. Key areas include: • National Security • Cyber Security • Environmental Security • Clean Energy • Nuclear Science ARC’s programs and initiatives provide strategic insights and policy solutions to a wide range of securityrelated problems. ARC routinely hosts roundtable discussions and conferences that bring communities of interests together to produce actionable recommendations for government agencies and private sectors. Popular series have included: • Latin American Strategic Cultures Series • Western Hemisphere Information Exchange Technical Reports • Western Hemisphere Security Analysis Series • Western Hemisphere Security Colloquia Series ARC’s scientists also publish regularly in peer-reviewed journals, trade journals and mainstream media outlets.

Workforce Development In an effort to maintain a pipeline of scientists and engineers for government and industry, ARC provides workforce development programs and student internships designed to train and mentor FIU students for future careers. ARC’s cyber-training program gives students hands-on research and internship opportunities under the guidance of expert faculty and professional staff mentors in the areas of firewall management, intrusion detection and prevention systems, security monitoring, log monitoring and retention, vulnerability management and unified threat management. Through our innovative DOE-FIU Science and Technology Workforce Development Program, ARC partners with the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Environmental Management to create specifically trained and mentored minority engineers, ready to enter the DOE workforce in technical areas of need. Known as DOE Fellows, students selected for this program perform research at FIU and at a DOE site, providing them with a unique opportunity to integrate course work, field work, and applied research at FIU into a well-structured professional development program. Designed to help address the DOE’s future workforce needs, this program brings together academic, government and contractor organizations to mentor future minority scientists and engineers in the research, development and deployment of new technologies addressing the DOE’s environmental clean-up challenges. Upon graduation and completion of this fellowship, students apply to federal internship programs such as the Student Career Experience Program, National Laboratories, DOE Contractors or related fields.
