The Applied Research Center (ARC) at Florida International University specializes in solving real-world problems through multidisciplinary research. ARC connects government agencies, private companies and industry experts to our top researchers across all disciplines including the physical and social sciences and engineering. We foster the free-flowing exchange of ideas to ensure that creativity and innovation find application in the rapidly changing world. Focused on energy and environment, information technology, and policy innovation, ARC also provides workforce development programs and student internships to create a pipeline of graduating scientists and engineers that have hands-on experience, which is of critical importance to today’s employers. Valuing client relationships, ARC is committed to producing project deliverables on time and within budget. Since our founding in 1995, the center has executed more than 150 teaming or nondisclosure agreements including joint projects with the United States Department of Defense, Department of Energy, architectural and engineering firms, as well as small businesses. Services include business planning, certification training, project management training, mentored student internships, online training and leadership programs. Our staff consists of multicultural, multilingual professionals, many of whom are certified Project Management Professionals or Professional Engineers. Under the leadership of its executive director, ARC reports to FIU’s Vice President of Research. ARC has an external advisory board encompassing leaders from the private and public sectors. The FIU Applied Research Center Council, comprised of university deans, executives and faculty, guides the development of ARC’s myriad programs.

Energy and Environment FIU is a global leader in applied solutions for the environment and sustainability. The Applied Research Center – in collaboration with the university’s colleges and schools – has expertise, instrumentation, dedicated laboratories and pilot-scale facilities to tackle multidisciplinary problems pertaining to: • Environmental remediation, monitoring, instrumentation and management • Environmental and regional planning • Mechanics and materials specializing in composites • Radioactive waste processing and management • Water treatment, purification, management and distribution • Deactivation and decommissioning of nuclear facilities Further research in various areas of the environment and energy industry allows the center to be a key player in assisting federal and state agencies as well as private industry partners in areas that span applied research to engineering and implementing solutions. Research includes aerospace, sustainability and green energy (such as solar, wind and biofuels), nuclear sciences, marine science and coastal engineering. The center also has capabilities in ocean process studies, including deep water and coastal ocean-shelf-basin interactions and transport via tracers of different kinds. ARC also works in partnership with the School of Environment, Arts and Society in the College of Arts & Sciences on a joint marine sciences program, with an emphasis on pollutant dispersal in the ocean and the development of sensor and data networks. The school’s resources include the Aquarius Reef Base off the Florida Keys and labs at the Southeast Environmental Research Center, dedicated to research efforts in the threatened environments of the southeastern United States.

ARC is contributing to the security of cyber environments through sponsored research in cyberspace technology testing, infrastructure and workforce development. The research covers the specific areas of cyberspace architectures and frameworks, multi-agent systems for network monitoring and control, visualization concepts and technologies, cyber resilience, reliability, efficiency, information security management and data anomalies. ARC’s state-of-the-art information technology infrastructure provides support to various clients, including the Department of Defense’s Test Resource Management Center (DOD-TRMC) and the Department of Energy’s Office of Environmental Management (DOE-EM). The IT Group builds custom enterprise solutions, using multitier, service-oriented architecture on the Microsoft platform. Our clients include the U.S. Department of Energy, U.S. Department of Defense and various mentor-protégé programs, including Montgomery Watson, Earth Tech, Bell Helicopters, AECOM Technology Corporation, Jacobs, Northrop Grumman, SAIC and Battelle. We also support the administrative, research, instructional and outreach activities of the university in a risk-managed, costeffective and continuously improved environment. We develop intuitive and elegant mobile applications by providing the highest quality work product at every point within our software engineering processes. Workforce Development In an effort to maintain a pipeline of scientists and engineers for government and industry, ARC provides workforce development programs and student internships designed to train and mentor FIU students for future careers. ARC’s cyber-training program gives students hands-on research and internship opportunities under the guidance of expert faculty and professional staff mentors in the areas of firewall management, intrusion detection and prevention systems, security monitoring, log monitoring and retention, vulnerability management and unified threat management. Through our innovative DOE-FIU Science and Technology Workforce Development Program, ARC partners with the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Environmental Management to create specifically trained and mentored minority engineers, ready to enter the DOE workforce in technical areas of need. Known as DOE Fellows, students selected for this program perform research at FIU and at a DOE site, providing them with a unique opportunity to integrate course work, field work, and applied research at FIU into a well-structured professional development program. Designed to help address the DOE’s future workforce needs, this program brings together academic, government and contractor organizations to mentor future minority scientists and engineers in the research, development and deployment of new technologies addressing the DOE’s environmental clean-up challenges.
