After 75 years Dr. Hans Sachs’ poster collection debuts at the museum page 8

President’s Message
JMOF-FIU Leadership
The fall has arrived and with it comes another exciting season for the museum. FIU classes kicked off, bringing in a new group of young minds alongside adult learners, for courses on religion and the Holocaust, using JMOF-FIU’s artifacts and exhibits as resources. The annual student writing contest is underway, introducing multicultural themes of Growers, Grocers & Gefilte Fish to students all across the state. After more than two years of research and sorting through thousands of photographs and artifacts, we have selected the gems for this exhibit, for a very nostalgic look at the people responsible for the foods we love. In November, Graphic Details will grace our walls and undoubtedly move you with its uncensored honesty about being a Jewish woman in the man’s world of comics. As the first museum in the U.S. to display a selection of the Hans Sachs posters, JMOF-FIU continues to receive accolades and press for the show. Several experts will convene at the museum during the week of Art Basel to talk about the subject of Nazi looted art and restitution. Of course our flurry of public programs keeps going: from music performances to films and walking food tours, there’s quite literally something going on each week. Don’t forget to clip out the program guide from this issue, so you won’t miss anything! We look forward to your continued participation in and support of all our activities.

JMOF-FIU celebrates 18 years For the Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU, celebrating its 18th year is an important milestone. In Jewish culture, there’s no secret to the number 18. It represents life. “Secular culture values round numbers like 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 50 in terms of measuring time and anniversaries,” said Oren Stier, associate professor of religious studies at FIU. “In Judaism, we have a different idea that relates to classic Jewish numerology, otherwise known as gematria.” This system of numerology, according to Stier, allows people to extract secret meanings behind Jewish words, phrases and texts. In the case of 18, the combined numerical value of letters het ( ) and yud ( ) spell chai — life. This is why many Jewish people will give monetary gifts in multiples of 18. Symbolically, they are giving the gift of life. For the museum, the symbolism of 18 years is about more than just its future. It’s also a time to celebrate its past. “Since opening its doors, the museum has offered more than 600 educational and cultural public programs, while also hosting thousands of school children and countless visitors from all across the world every year,”
said Jo Ann Arnowitz, executive director of JMOF-FIU. “The museum’s space has more than doubled, and its collections have expanded significantly.” In addition, the museum’s leadership initiated legislation for both an annual Florida Jewish History Month and Jewish American Heritage Month to celebrate the culture, traditions and contributions of the Jewish people to Florida and the nation. During its first 18 years, the museum also earned accreditation by the American Alliance of Museums, a distinction attained by less than 5 percent of the nation’s museums. With more than 70 temporary exhibits under its belt, the museum continues to promote understanding of and tolerance for all ethnic groups, as it ushers in a new era of interdisciplinary education and research as part of the FIU family. As the Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU looks toward the future, it continues to honor the traditions of gematria. Anyone wishing to permanently commemorate a milestone or honor a loved one can make a donation of $1,800 to dedicate a Chai Club plaque in the museum’s lobby. To learn more about this and other support opportunities, contact the museum at 786-972-3180 or by email at info@jewishmuseum.com or visit the museum online at www.jewishmuseum.com.

“Growers, Grocers & Gefilte Fish” Explores Nearly 200 Years of Florida Jews in the Food Industry Members Opening on Monday, October 14 at 6 p.m.
J
ews in the Sunshine State are better known for serving up delicious corned beef on rye than for their work in the fields. However you may be surprised to learn that Florida is home to the “King of Citrus,” groves three times the size of Manhattan and even sixth generation dairy farmers, all businesses owned and operated by Jews. Growers, Grocers & Gefilte Fish: A Gastronomic Look at Florida Jews in Food spans nearly 200 years of history, with artifacts, figures and photographs that will feed your memories and tempt your taste buds, including produce growers, “ma and pa” grocers, gefilte fish distributors, butchers, bakers and world renowned chefs. The members-only exhibit opening will take place on Monday, October 14 at 6 p.m. The exhibit will open to the public on Tuesday, October 15 and remain on display for approximately one year.
“This exhibit has been a long time coming,” said Executive Director Jo Ann Arnowitz. “We’ve always known that we wanted to have an exhibit on food, but there’s so much material, we could have filled three museums just on this subject! What we have now is a sampling of the growers, farmers, markets, restaurateurs, chefs, bakers and others who’ve contributed to the foods and memories we share when we think of eating either at home or at a restaurant in Florida. We also included a few of the well known ‘foodies’ today, like Michael Schwartz and Michelle Bernstein, who continue to redefine the industry both here at home and on a national scale.” Growers, Grocers and Gefilte Fish is comprised of more than 400 photographs and 60 objects, and includes more than 250 Florida Jewish families and companies. The exhibit has also inspired a variety of public programs, including
Select highlights include photographs and artifacts from the following Floridian Jewish businesses or individuals: • Dr. Philip Phillips (Orlando): Named the “King of Citrus,” Phillips was the world’s largest citrus producer in the early 1900s. Phillips developed the revolutionary process of flashpasteurizing, enabling him to can juice without altering the taste. The American Medical Association even endorsed his orange juice label that read, “Drink Dr. Phillips Orange Juice because the Doc says it’s good for you!” • Joshua Groves (Arcadia): This grove was planted with three million orange trees, three times the size of Manhattan! It was a distinguishing landmark for astronauts who took aerial photos of it on the first manned satellite in orbit. • Davie Dairy (Okeechobee): A sixth generation dairy business with 960 acres and two milking facilities that produces 15,000 gallons of milk daily! Today, Davie Dairy is home to over 4,500 cows. 4

Restaurant Chains: • Royal Castle: William Singer opened the chain in the 1930s and by the time the company sold in 1969, it had 175 restaurants. • Burger King: Started by Ben Stein of Jacksonville in 1955. • Joe’s Stone Crab Restaurant (Miami Beach): Now in its 100th year, still family owned and operated by Jo Ann Bass, the granddaughter of Joe & Jennie Weiss, the first Jews to settle on Miami Beach. • Lewis Bear & Co. (Pensacola): Oldest privately held corporation in Florida (1876-present). Started as a grocery and chandlery, now Anheuser-Busch’s oldest continuous distributorship. • South Beach Wine & Food Festival (Miami Beach): Originally a one-day festival, Lee Schrager took over in 2002 and produced a four-day event that has become a national destination to over 65,000 guests. The show is known for showcasing the world’s most renowned chefs and culinary personalities.

ith more than 155 ethnic groups represented in local schools, it’s no wonder Florida is often called an ethnic melting pot. JMOF-FIU depicts the history, past and present, of Floridian Jews’ involvement in all aspects of the development of our state, while maintaining the rich traditions and customs of their heritage. It is an inspirational story for students of all backgrounds and cultures, as the thousands of participants who visit us on field trips can attest. They learn of the triumphs and challenges of one ethnic group as a universal example of every family’s immigration experience. The tour begins with a powerful introduction about the site of the museum, located in two restored buildings that were once synagogues for Miami Beach’s first Jewish congregation, built at a time when land deed restrictions prevented Jews from owning property just a few blocks north of the buildings. This provides the jumping off point for discussing topics of discrimination, prejudice, bigotry and how each student can play a role in ensuring a more tolerant society. “We have a two-fold mission
with our youth tours,” says Chaim Lieberperson, education manager. “One is to relate the story of the Jewish people in Florida from 1763 to the present and the other is to highlight the universal tendencies of all ethnic or minority groups. Since we all came from somewhere else, our ancestors all experienced very similar challenges of retaining tradition while moving to a new country and trying to fit in and be a part of the modern scene in America.” The museum experience is enhanced with a scavenger hunt, film and lesson plans for each of the changing art and history exhibits. The visit to JMOF-FIU often inspires the students to ask questions at home about their own family background – where did we come from, do we have any photographs of our ancestors, how did our family make a living in the “old country” and what customs did we maintain from there? At the end of the tour, students are presented a guest pass to return with their families, and many do, as well as teachers who book tours annually – proving that we make a real impact on the thousands of youth who visit JMOF-FIU each year.
Student Creative Writing Contest – Deadline November 15 To help expand our reach to students beyond the museum walls, we offer an annual contest based on the themes in our exhibits, open to students throughout the state. This year’s contest is in conjunction with our exhibit, Growers, Grocers & Gefilte Fish on Florida Jews in the food industry. In order to gain a better understanding of the role of food in passing down cultures and traditions, we ask students in grades 6-12 to submit a creative writing piece using the following prompt: “What foods spell ‘tradition’ in your home and why? Describe a meal you shared with family and/or friends that has special meaning for you and tell why was it significant.” Cash prizes are awarded for the winners. The complete contest details and application form can be downloaded from our website under the Education tab. All submissions must be received by mail or delivery by Friday, November 15, 2013, 5 p.m. For more contest information or to book a school tour, contact our Education Manager at 786-972-3187 or education@jewishmuseum.com.

Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU Debuts Dr. Hans Sachs’ Poster Collection Collection Returned to Family 75 Years After Being Seized by Nazis The Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU (JMOF-FIU) is debuting a newly curated exhibit featuring selections from the renowned poster collection of Dr. Hans Sachs. Confiscated by the Nazis in 1938, the posters were just recently returned to his son, Peter Sachs. The exhibit, which opened July 9, will be on display through December 15, 2013. Dr. Hans Sachs was a German Jewish dentist who amassed the largest and most significant private poster collection in the world at the time, totaling 12,500 posters in 1938. The extensive collection includes mostly small original print runs of art, propaganda, politics, 8
entertainment, travel, sports, consumer products, and scenes of war, some dating back to 1885. The collection features works by notable artists such as Mucha, Steinlen, Cassandre, Cheret, Bernhard, Edel, Gipkens, Klinger, Carlu, Schnackenberg, Dufau, Grasset, Fennecker, Hohlwein, Kainer, Pechstein, Scheurich, Biro, Leyendecker, Christy and Flagg among others. Dr. Sachs organized the first poster collecting society and in 1911, published Das Plakat (The Poster), an international magazine which quickly developed a devoted following. Before World War II, Sachs displayed the posters as mounted exhibits, open to the public, through

a society of friends. After Nazi occupation, Joseph Goebbels, chief of Nazi propaganda, sent police to Sachs’ home to confiscate the entire collection, telling him it would be transferred to a new museum. Years later, Sachs detailed the experience in a report. “The day after next, three giant trucks appeared. The blackest day of my life had begun. With my own hands, I took 250 aluminum arms, each containing 50 posters, from their supports, removed the bibliography with its 80 larger works and hundreds of single articles, carried 12 full card indexes boxes with 1,000 cards each and the entire miniature graphic to the
AUKTION 392 Leads to Sachs’ Exhibit In 2011, the Jewish Museum of Florida hosted the exhibit, AUKTION 392: Reclaiming the Galerie Max Stern, Dusseldorf. The exhibit was originally conceived, researched and curated by the Faculty of Fine Arts Gallery at Concordia University in Canada and toured and presented by the Ben Uri, Gallery of The London Jewish Museum of Art. The exhibit explored the fate of Dr. Max Stern’s art collections, which was looted by the Nazis during World War II. As JMOF prepared to present the exhibit, research revealed the struggles of Sarasota resident Peter Sachs to reclaim his father’s renowned poster collection. At the time, Sachs was engaged in a court battle for the return of the artwork. AUKTION 392 will be on display at the Cornell Fine Arts Museum at Rollins College in Winter Park, FL through December 8, 2013. Chapeaux Roche, J.F. Bubna, Dinse und Eckert, 1911.

trucks, where they were carried off – never to be seen again.” For the next 75 years, the Sachs family did not know the fate of the collection. When pieces were seen in East Berlin in 1966, the family began their pursuit to locate the posters and have them returned. However, each attempt was met with contention from the German art organizations and courts. Dr. Sachs died in 1974 without ever seeing his posters again. In 2009, his son won a test case at Berlin’s administrative court over one poster. But the German Historical Museum, which admitted to holding 4,000 of the posters, appealed. Previously, the
museum claimed possession of 8,000 of the posters. In 2010, the German judicial system affirmed that the posters belonged to the Sachs family, but said the collection must remain in Berlin. The case eventually went to the Constitutional Supreme Court of Germany where it found the family was the rightful owner. In 2012, the German Historical Museum finally released what remained of the collection, an estimated 4,259 posters. Some of the posters will go to museums, including the JMOF-FIU. Others will be auctioned off to the public. “There’s, of course, no practical way that I could frame and hang

4,300 posters, so I just didn’t see any other alternative than to do what we’re doing,” Peter Sachs recently told the Huffington Post. “But I don’t feel guilty in any way whatsoever — even with them being auctioned I think it’s far preferable that they will wind up in the hands of people who truly enjoy them and appreciate them rather than sitting in a museum’s storage for another 70 years without seeing the light of day.” The value of the collection is estimated to be between $6 million and $21 million. JMOF-FIU Launches Keys to the Collection From the Collections of the Jewish Museum of Florida, originated by Marcia Jo Zerivitz, founding executive director. JMOF-FIU is proud to have more than 100,000 items in its collection. The collection was formed as a basis for the traveling exhibit, MOSAIC: Jewish Life in Florida, which toured 10 Florida cities, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. From photographs of the first Jews from Pensacola to Key West, to passports and
immigration papers and uniforms worn by Floridian Jews in military service here and abroad, each item in our collection pieces together the story of Jews in the Sunshine State. As is the case for all museums, a limited amount of exhibit space keeps us from showing visitors everything we have. That’s why the
museum has introduced the Keys to the Collection series. Each month, we choose an interesting item in our collection that is not on display to share with the public through our website, Facebook and Twitter pages. This way, our audience from all across the world can get a glimpse of more of our treasures.
u In May, we featured a World War II counterfeit note from Operation Bernhard. This was the codename of a secret Nazi plan to destabilize the British economy by flooding the country with forged Bank of England £5, £10, £20, and £50 notes. The notes, produced by Jewish prisoners at Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp, were part of the largest counterfeiting operation in history.
u In June, we shared an image of Gamma Tau girls from 1945. At the time, Gamma Tau was the only high school sorority in Jacksonville (Duval County Schools) that permitted Jewish girls to join.
To learn more about these pieces and to see more Keys to the Collection, please visit the page on our website: www.jewishmuseum.com. It’s also important to remember that the museum would not have its extensive collection if it weren’t for so many of you who have graciously donated your family’s memorabilia to be preserved and available for future generations. The first-ever Jews of Asia and Africa class proved to be a major success for FIU and the Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU. Taught by two of the world’s leading authorities on Eastern Jewish communities — FIU research professors Nathan Katz and Tudor Parfitt — the Jews of Asia and Africa class expanded beyond the museum’s focus of the Jewish experience in the Sunshine State. This fall, two courses continue to broaden the discussion. Students were quick to sign up for REL 2011 and REL 3194 at the start of the semester. The first course, Religion: Analysis and Interpretation, is taught by Ivanessa Arostegui. It serves as an introduction to the study of religion, examining the different expressions and practices, focusing on religious experience in interdisciplinary contexts. The class leverages different techniques as a way of learning, including debates, lectures, personal assignments, videos, group assignments and guest speakers. The second course focuses on the Holocaust and is taught by Oren Stier. The course is not a history of the Holocaust itself, but rather a survey of historical, ethical and theological issues relating to the Holocaust — the systematic destruction of Jews and Jewish life by the Nazi regime during World War II. The class takes a closer look at the relationship between Jews and Christians before, during and after the Nazi era. Stier specializes in Jewish Cultural Studies, with a special emphasis on the contemporary period and all aspects of present-day Jewish life and thought. His current research focuses on Holocaust memory and representation. In the spring, FIU plans to offer three more classes including the Sociology of World Jewish Communities, Studies in World Religions, and Jerusalem. The course on Jerusalem will be taught by Parfitt whose research on the Lost Tribes of Israel was recently featured in several media outlets throughout Israel. Katz, who is director of FIU’s Program in the Study of Spirituality, spent many years living in South Asia.
Tudor Parfitt was director of the Jewish Studies Center at the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London.

So What Is The Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU The Jewish Museum of Florida opened in 1995 in a former historic synagogue that housed the first congregation on Miami Beach. Built in 1936, the Henry Hohauser designed building that underwent a two-year restoration, boasts Art Deco features, a copper dome and 80 stained glass windows. In 2007, the museum expanded into the original 1929 synagogue next door after a one-year restoration, now The Jonathan Symons Building. Both buildings are on the National Register of Historic Places. In 2008, the two buildings were connected with a skylighted Bessie’s Bistro. The museum is much more than beautiful buildings. It is a place that presents its own and traveling exhibits, sponsors cultural and educational programs, houses a Collections & Research Center reflecting 250 years of Florida Jewish history, and communicates Jewish history, art, culture and values to Jews and non-Jews alike in an informal mode. The museum is also a place where Jews of all ages and stripes discover and reaffirm their rich heritage – thus helping to strengthen Jewish identity and ensure Jewish continuity. So how did all this get started? You may already know if you are among those who participated in and enjoyed the exhibit MOSAIC: Jewish Life in Florida that traveled to 13 cities (1990-94). Depicting Florida Jewish history from 1763 to the present, this was a statewide grassroots project to collect material evidence from the time Jews were first allowed to live in the Sunshine State. Thousands of photographs, artifacts and oral histories were gathered from families and this collection continues now in the museum, which was created as a result of the interest and support garnered from the original MOSAIC project. Where the traveling exhibit was the launch, the Jewish Museum of Florida further delves into the state’s rich Jewish history of yesterday and today – for the future. Historic Partnership with Florida International University (FIU) Following the approval of the museum’s Board of Directors, Florida International University’s Board of Trustees and the Florida Board of Governors, the museum became part of the FIU family. This historic partnership leverages the resources of the museum and FIU, igniting a new era of interdisciplinary education and research focused on the history of the Jewish experience in Florida, the ways in which Florida Jews influence and are influenced by the cultural dynamics of Florida, the nation and the world, and issues of discrimination against all peoples in Florida throughout history. A key component of the partnership is the relocation of a variety of FIU programs, including the Jewish Studies Certificate Program, to the museum’s facilities. The plan also includes the expansion of academic programs and research endeavors designed to educate FIU students, faculty and the greater Florida community about the challenges of the immigrant experiences shared by all ethnicities in the State. Whether your family has lived in Florida for eight generations, as some have, or just arrived – YOUR story is an important tile the MOSAIC. Join us!

Coming Soon Jews have had an extensive contribution to comics, but the focus has been mostly on male artists and their larger than life superhero counterparts. This fall, learn how women contributed to the history of comics, and in particular, to autobiographical comics, a genre they helped birth in Graphic Details: Confessional Comics by Jewish Women. The exhibit features 18 artists, whose writings and drawings depict their own pain, laughter, shame, triumphs and self-doubts in a way that taps a collective nerve. The Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU will host a members’ only exhibit opening on Monday, November 4 at 6 p.m. RSVP by October 25. Did You Know? JMOF-FIU is housed in two restored buildings that were once synagogues for Miami Beach’s first Jewish congregation — Congregation Beth Jacob. The first building was completed in 1929 and the second in 1936. The museum opened in the younger building in 1995 and expanded into the 1929 structure in 2007.
3rd Street
The buildings are located on the corner of 3rd Street and Washington Avenue because at the time of construction, Jews were not allowed to own property north of 5th Street.

The year Congregation Beth Jacob’s second building was designed, by famous Art Deco architect Henry Hohauser, who was a member of the congregation. The exact number of stained glass windows in the museum, designed by Rabbi Moses Mescheloff, fabricated in Hialeah, FL and installed in 1940.
The number of people the 1936 building could accommodate, with a women’s balcony and stadium-style seating that called for a slanted floor to improve sight and acoustics.
Each of the columns of the 301 building that supports the roof contain the 6-pointed Star of David, but the four half columns in the corners have only half a star. The year both museum buildings were listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
