Descend on Aquarius: FIU runs the world’s only undersea research lab – Aquarius Reef Base. Chillin’ in the Arctic: In the summer of 2013, scientist and Ph.D. student Mark Barton went to Barrow, Alaska, to collect fish and invertebrates along the Chukchi and Beaufort coast. His research will help establish a baseline to measure environmental and anthropogenic change in the Arctic.
From MMC to Wall Street: Students train for a job in the financial services industry in the State Farm Financial Literacy Lab in the College of Business complex at Modesto A. Maidique Campus. This trading, research and teaching facility has 50 high-end, networked, workstations with dual-screen monitors and is equipped with advanced audio/visual systems, plasma screens and a ticker tape with real-time data..

Aneysis Gonzalez trained for two summers in the lab of Nobel Prize recipient Thomas Sudhof. Gonzalez investigated RIM binding protein, a type of protein that binds to other proteins but is not fully functioning in autistic patients.
We’ve got the only Wall of Wind you’ll find at a university. The massive machine generates wind speeds up to 157 miles per hour for purposes of testing the hurricane resiliency of everything from private homes to warehouses to light poles. By recreating Mother Nature’s fury, our researchers are helping build safer, storm-resistant communities around the world.

Have passport, will travel: In 2013 five Alternative Breaks (aB) groups traveled to Nicaragua, the second poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, to work on issues ranging from health advocacy to reforestation.
Whether it’s participating in Tuesday Times Roundtable discussions, where students get together over lunch to discuss New York Times articles on global issues, or spending time in a country you’ve never visited as part of the university’s popular Alternative Breaks (aB) and Study Abroad programs, you’ll have many opportunities to put into practice the lessons you learn in the classroom.

We think of these opportunities as life-changing. Our students describe them differently:
Best. Trips. Ever. FIYou in China: Many students spend a semester in China as part of the Marriott Tianjin China Program in hospitality management. It’s part of a cooperative venture between FIU and Tianjin University of Commerce, which is located in China’s sixth-largest city. Students pay FIU in-state tuition rates for their Study Abroad courses and may use their FIU financial aid. Students who are not majoring in hospitality management can complete a minor in international hospitality studies in just one semester.
Student Andrew Hofmeyer was introduced to the concept of microfinancing through the course “Women, Culture and Economic Development.” Inspired by what he learned and encouraged by his teacher, he interned with the Grameen Bank in Bangladesh, India.
That’s what greeted nine members of the university community who made FIU Alternative Breaks (aB) history in 2013 when they arrived in South Africa to work with children and adults with HIV/AIDS. Theirs was the first aB group at FIU to travel to the African continent.

In a remote jungle of Papua New Guinea, a tribe of former cannibals claims to be one of the Lost Tribes of Israel. Religious Studies Professor Tudor Parfitt, who has been tracking such Israelite movements around the world for more than two decades, took a group of students to Papua New Guinea in 2013 to continue his research with the Gogodala Tribe.

Heartthrob Danny Pino ’96 stars as Detective Scotty Valens in NBC’s Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. He also played Grand Marshal at our Homecoming parade in 2013.
In 2013, Richard Blanco ’91, MFA ’97 joined a very short list of great American poets, including Robert Frost and Maya Angelou, who have had the honor of being selected as inaugural poets. Blanco recited One Today, an original poem he wrote for President Obama’s second inauguration.
While still a student, Ximena Prugue ’14 founded Giving the Green Light, a non-profit that provides solar lanterns to communities suffering from energy poverty.

Carmen M. Reinhart ’78 is the Minos A. Zombanakis Professor of the International Financial System at Harvard Kennedy School. The New York Times has called her the most influential female economist in the world. Her work has helped inform the understanding of financial crises for more than a decade.
