OUR FUTURE IS 4
FIU College of Communication, Architecture + The Arts
Unprecedented challenges afford us with unprecedented opportunities.
Located in the heart of one of the country’s most vibrant, diverse and creative cities, our academic disciplines reflect Miami’s zeal and the inclusive communities we serve. Composed of creative disciplines in three schools, eight academic departments, and five centers or institutes, the College of Communication, Architecture + the Arts (CARTA) prides itself on empowering students by assisting them to craft their vision, apply their imagination, and chart their future. We aim to equip our students with the knowledge and necessary skill sets to create a more empathetic, just, sustainable, and beautiful world. During a year of increased uncertainties, rapid transformations, and collective anxieties, it has been inspiring to witness the professionalism, optimism, and innovation of our students, faculty, professional staff, alumni and patrons – all uniting in support of one another and our core mission: student success. I firmly believe this past year has made us stronger, clarifying our focus and confirming our resolution. Our shared resiliency, student-centered focus, and empathy – all hallmarks of CARTA and our FIU – enabled us to pivot our mode of instruction and operation to a virtual environment, ensuring everyone’s safety while maintaining our commitment to experiential learning, engaged scholarship and creative activities, and our students’ uninterrupted progress toward their degrees and meaningful careers. I’m so proud to report this past year we achieved new heights in student retention rates (90%+), student graduation rates (75%+), and student employment upon graduation, with our Department of Architecture and the Department of Landscape Architecture + Environmental and Urban Design both ranking in the top 20 nationally. Throughout the COVID-19 crisis, CARTA remained in regular communication with all stakeholders, with an emphasis on listening and ensuring the needs of our students, faculty, staff, and community were met. We launched CARTA Cares to provide the CARTA community with updates, resources and prevention tips. As a college centered on experiential learning, we

fully embraced online learning and remote work, while identifying and pioneering pedagogies and expanding student internships and partnerships with industry. CARTA Miami Beach Urban Studios (MBUS) in response to a shortage of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) produced thousands of 3D-printed face shields for our communities’ first responders and healthcare workers. This past year, Dr. Herbert and Nicole Wertheim and the Wertheim Family Foundation announced a $10 million gift – the largest gift in the history of the college and the largest gift in Florida to a music school. The Wertheim’s gift will enable our School of Music to expand our arts in medicine and our music business programs. The Wertheim’s generosity and support of FIU are, without question, unparalleled and greatly appreciated. Our nationally recognized School of Architecture also received approval this past year from the Florida Board of Governors to launch our first doctoral degree, the Doctor of Design (DDes). The new STEM-focused doctoral degree is the only one offered in Florida and one of only five post-professional DDes programs nationwide, once again, positioning FIU and CARTA at the forefront of higher education. As you read through this year’s Annual Report and our many points of pride, I know you will join me in thanking and congratulating our exceptional faculty, staff, students, alumni, patrons and friends. It is the combined efforts of our incredible CARTA Family that has made this past year a stunning success. Yes, while this past year has been unprecedented in its challenges, it has afforded us with unprecedented opportunities! I remain humbled and honored to serve as the Dean of CARTA.

SPIRIT
Whether through the power of a paintbrush, production, model, song or story, CARTA is front and center bringing the Panther spirit to life. Our annual homecoming contests, live and virtual performances by music and theatre students, the Department of Architecture’s annual Walk on Water competition and graduations all help bring the FIU community a little closer and unite us in our mission of ensuring our students get the very best of what we have to offer. Our Panther pride guides us in everything we do and create here at CARTA.
Dean Brian Schriner, Dr. Herbert Wertheim and Department Chair Karen Fuller surrounded by Panther fans.
Inspiring through sound, craft and style A true staple of our CARTA community is the FIU Marching Band, led by Professor Barry Bernhardt. This close-knit group of more than 200 performers sets Panther spirit on fire year-round – and this year the band was the largest it’s ever been. Representing over 30 majors and disciplines, the band is a microcosm of FIU’s and Miami’s diversity.

Student-designed 3D-printed model of stadium helps police prepare for Super Bowl FIU students helped the Miami-Dade Police Department prepare for Super Bowl LIV by 3D-printing an exact replica of Hard Rock Stadium in CARTA’s Robotics and Digital Fabrication (RDF) Lab. Officers from the Special Patrol Bureau, which includes the Special Response Team and the Rapid Deployment Force, used the model for months leading up to the Super Bowl to get to know the 65,000-seat stadium for tactical planning and training in and around the stadium. The RDF Lab and projects like these are prime examples of how CARTA offers its students experiential learning opportunities to work on projects that have real-world applications while training them as experts in their field.

Theatre students pivot during the pandemic
IPAL allows students to earn accreditation and degrees simultaneously
When the coronavirus pandemic interrupted on-campus instruction, FIU Theatre students created a video blog (vlog) series, The Class Must Go On. Theatre students brought the FIU community along on their journey as they navigated remote learning, a new normal, and how they stayed motivated during the transition.
FIU’s Department of Architecture is one of only 26 NAAB-accredited programs nationwide and the only program in South Florida to provide the Integrated Path to Architectural Licensure (IPAL) initiative. IPAL makes it possible for architecture students to earn their diplomas and professional licenses in architecture simultaneously by providing a curriculum that incorporates professional experience and examination. On average, it can take up to 12.5 years to attain licensure in the U.S. FIU’s IPAL initiative cuts this time in half.

Art students hone their classical drawing and painting skills in the Academy of Portrait & Figurative Art
During a time that proves to be extremely difficult for many industries, FIU students still thrived in their craft. Student journalists from the South Florida Media Network (SFMN) produced an interactive multimedia map, which spanned a dozen countries and six U.S. states, to tell the stories of 34 individuals who were severely impacted by COVID-19. The project won the Society of Professional Journalists’ (SPJ) College Coronavirus Coverage (CCC) Award.
The Department of Art + Art History houses the Academy of Portrait & Figurative Art, the first of its kind at a public university. A studio where an artist and apprentices work together to produce fine art. The Academy is led by its founder, professor David Chang, a classically-trained artist, professor and chair of the department. It functions as an atelier —where pupils learn one-on-one with a master, in this case, Chang, to perfect their drawing and painting under his guidance. Courses offered include portrait, figure and landscape painting as well as classical drawing.

Ratcliffe Foundation renews incubator funds and inspires innovation The Ratcliffe Foundation seeks to bridge the gap between talent and entrepreneurship while promoting innovative art + design. The late Carole Ratcliffe was a staunch supporter of broadening access to education in business and entrepreneurship for students, particularly first-generation students who, otherwise, might not have the opportunity to learn the skills necessary to succeed in business. In support of CARTA’s mission and with major grants from the Ratcliffe Foundation, the Ratcliffe Art + Design Incubator was founded to help realize Ms. Ratcliffe’s and the university’s vision. The Ratcliffe Foundation has reaffirmed its agreement to support the Incubator through 2024 to continue inspiring the next generation of future entrepreneurs and to find new ways to push the boundaries of innovation and creativity. C A R TA C A R E S CARTA 3D-prints face shields for frontline workers In response to the shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE) due to the pandemic, the Miami Beach Urban Studios (MBUS) housed in CARTA, 3D-printed thousands of reusable face shields for frontline workers. The first printing of the prototype shields began in March just one day after the idea was presented to the staff and students. The face shields, made from non-toxic PLA (polylactic acid), are meant to act as a first line of defense and as a way to preserve the longevity of face masks which are worn under the shield. What initially began as a solution for healthcare workers experiencing PPE shortages quickly expanded to include first responders, local community members and frontline workers as well.

Keeping careers on track amidst COVID-19
FIU Music’s choir sings alma mater at first-ever virtual commencement
For many recent CARTA graduates, navigating the workforce during the coronavirus pandemic, which included new obstacles such as virtual interviews, was completely unchartered territory and slightly intimidating. That’s why CARTA career specialists banded together to provide new, current and graduated students with career advice, resources and opportunities amidst a newly changed job market, completely tailored to their majors.
At FIU’s first-ever virtual commencement, the School of Music’s virtual choir helped over 6,000 graduates celebrate the momentous occasion by performing the FIU Alma Mater for all to enjoy via Zoom. The choral ensemble was made up of students from the choirs and voice faculty who expressed interest in still bringing this time-honored tradition to FIU graduates even while remote. They were provided with the Alma Mater sheet music and a video file containing an audible click track and pitches while receiving guidance from conductor Maria Guinand. Singers recorded and uploaded their videos from their homes which were then synchronized and combined into one single performance to create the virtual choir. Since FIU moved to remote learning, the School of Music has found creative ways to teach, collaborate, arrange and record music remotely.
