Newsletter for members of the Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU

Volume XXVI | Number 3 | March 2014

Chairman’s Message Spring is in the air! We have just enjoyed a fantastic Night at the Museum, our Purim celebration, with many friends and supporters. We take a moment and review our past year’s hard work and successes. An example is Growers, Grocers, and Gefilte Fish, a massive exhibit about Florida Jews’ role in all aspects of the food and food service industries, on display through October 5, 2014. Food will always take center stage in the past, present and future of every people, community, or culture. The multiple events we have offered, like An Evening with Michelle Bernstein, utilized each of our senses, especially taste, to deliver its message. The families in our B’nai Mitzvah Membership Program enjoyed a fun event with a scavenger hunt, capped with an ice cream party from our friends at The Frieze. The connection of Jews as we travel and transplant around the world, creates completely original flavors. It is my favorite way to learn about history. I am so excited about how our museum engages us, the members and visitors, in so many innovative and recently delicious ways. We have the best, most dynamic staff, who continue to produce new reasons to visit, learn, and enjoy here every day. I know I speak for all the members when I say “thank you” for your tireless, thoughtful and creative efforts on our behalf. Everyone, please check the calendar of Programs and Events in this issue (pages 12 and 13) and take note – you will not want to miss any of it. Look forward to seeing all of you here! And, as always, JMOF– FIU Membership makes a great and unique gift for your friends, family and business associates.

“Breaking the Glass Ceiling” Awards The Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU announces the four winners of the 18th Annual “Breaking the Glass Ceiling” Awards for women who have been successful in fields generally dominated by men. The Award Reception and Ceremony features presentations made by the honorees describing the obstacles and inspirations they encountered on their individual journeys to success.

Iris Acker Iris Acker broke through the glass ceiling nearly 30 years ago, when she served as the executive producer and host of the local arts program “On Stage with Iris Acker.” She was also the first woman President of the South Florida Chapter of the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA), member of Screen Actors Guild (SAG), and a union representative for Actors’ Equity, all in an era before women were accepted within these organizations’ leadership roles. Iris is also an acclaimed actress and writer, whose career began on the New York Stage over five decades

Melissa Fronstin Melissa Fronstin is a forerunner in the facility management business, an industry that continues to be dominated by men. In 1987, she became the first Director of Sales and Marketing for South Florida’s original entertainment facility, Miami Arena, which was home to the Miami Heat, Florida Panthers and live entertainment events including concerts and family shows. Following 14 years in Arena Sales & Marketing, Melissa joined the Benihana Restaurant Group as National Public Relations Director, where she oversaw public relations for 26 Benihana properties and traveled

Iris’ role in The MarriageGo-Round with Julie Newmar introduced her to the South Florida theater scene. A few years later, she and husband Phil moved to Miami. Her current program, “Spotlight on the Arts,” runs each week on BECON TV. Iris has also been a long time judge for the Carbonell Awards, South Florida’s regional professional theater awards and an active board member of The Florida International Press Club. Her many awards include the Lifetime Service Award from the South Florida Theater League and Woman of Power from the National Council of Jewish Women.

In 2010, Melissa became Executive Director of the Boca Raton Centre for the Arts and produced the acclaimed 2011 Boca Raton Festival of the Arts. In 2011, Melissa’s career came full-circle, when she was named the first woman Arena Director for the 4,500 seat Don Taft Arena at Nova Southeastern University. Melissa continues to maintain her role as a leader in an industry where very few women have stayed the course and where she was recognized by the industry as an Outstanding Venue Professional. Melissa is also an active volunteer, mentor and role model. She served on the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, was a mentor for Women of Tomorrow, and served on the Board of Children’s Cancer Caring Center.

Kronick Susan Kronick’s 37 year distinguished retail career has encompassed a uniquely wide variety of retail management responsibilities, including merchandising, marketing, operations, finance, real estate and stores. She retired as Vice Chairman of Macy’s, Inc., a $25 billion dollar company, in 2010 where she was responsible for all Macy’s divisions and Bloomingdale’s nationwide. Her climb to the top of the corporate ladder began at Bloomingdale’s where she rose to Senior Executive Vice President of stores, followed by four years as president and chief operating officer of Atlanta-based Rich’s/Lazarus/Goldsmith’s. In 1997, she was named chairman and CEO of Burdines in Miami.

This device is credited with keeping tens of thousands of nutritionally challenged people around the world alive, including her husband, Warren Rodgers. A true philanthropist, Dr. Lansky has made significant contributions to organizations in the Tampa Bay area. She and her husband are co-founders of the annual Not for Profit Workshop, the largest nonprofit educational event in the state and she is a valued member of the Florida Holocaust Museum’s Leadership Council.

The Museum is proud to recognize these women as examples to others to aim for the stars, and to welcome them into our prestigious group of more than 80 “Breaking the Glass Ceiling” Honorees to date. As Tamra Sheffman, a chair of the committee almost since its inception, notes, “This event is always an uplifting experience. We especially encourage students to attend, as it is such an inspiration to hear these women’s personal stories of their often rocky paths to success.” The event will take place at the Museum on Sunday, April 27 at 2:00 pm, beginning with light refreshments. Education

Comics, Contests, and Cooking Connect Teachers, Students, and Families at JMOF-FIU One of the focal points of our Museum’s education program is facilitating teachers’ Professional Development workshops, based on themes of our core and current exhibits. On Sunday, November 17, our second of three Professional Development workshops for 2013-14 took place in conjunction with the exhibit Graphic Details: Confessional Comics by Jewish Women. Educator, artist and graphic novel aficionado, Gonzalo Battaglia, served as our keynote lecturer and offered a condensed history focusing on the origins of the now popular Graphic Novel format. The teacher workshop included a laboratory for collaboration, as the teachers worked in small groups to create a graphic novel based on the life of a famous American in history. - May Quach, an ESOL teacher commented, “I have learned many valuable ideas to help my students from this professional development. Since my students are limited in English (ESOL) the story board is a great Teachers presenting results of their collaborative efforts in creating way for my students to understand a story and express ideas without lesson plans for the use of graphic novels in their classrooms. getting bogged down in difficult reading.” -Neil Hornstein, a social studies teacher reflected, “Until this workshop, I thought comic books were merely a child’s or teen’s magazine about imaginary characters. It was surprising to learn of their history, artistry and Jewish heritage….comics have been a small mirror of history since the late 1800s. They continue to depict aspects of the overall society and have a strong place in our contemporary understanding.” One of the teachers who participated in the workshop, Jeffrey Marcus, who is a gifted art teacher in his own right, was so inspired by the day, that he offered to serve as the facilitator for our annual Winter Break Family Day. Marcus guided participants, including three generations of families, through the process of creating their own “Super Heroes” comic strips.

Students and families also participated in the program presenting the winners of our annual Creative Writing contest. The contest, in conjunction with the Growers, Grocers and Gefilte Fish exhibit, challenged middle and high school students to write about the foods that spell “tradition” in their homes. The winning entries, culled from nearly 400 statewide submissions, included memories of Hungarian kielbasa, Shabbat cholent and Grandmother Tang’s Chinese New Year Nian Gao. Each student’s class also received a free field trip to the Museum. The contest award ceremony was followed by a family Challah Bread Making Workshop, led by Yaeli Merenfeld of Anny’s Bread Factory, who donated her time, talent and prepared bread dough, as well as a team of Florida International University volunteers, who are part of the non-profit organization Challah for Hunger. As the children and their families twisted and braided the dough together, their lively discussions focused on each other’s traditional holiday and family celebrations and memories – all centered around food – and they even exchanged some of their favorite recipes.

An Important History Chronicled in Famous Movie Posters

Gentleman’s Agreement, 20th Century Fox, 1947.

“Lights, Camera, Action!” are the famous words associated with movie sets…however, the lights were dimmed dramatically for Jews in the industry during World War II. CINEMA JUDAICA, an unprecedented exhibition of iconic Hollywood film posters from 1939 to 1949, explores this time period, Nazi influence and the response from American movie studios. It illustrates how the motion picture industry countered America’s isolationism, advocated going to war against the Nazis, influenced post-war perceptions of the Jewish people and the founding of the State of Israel, and shaped the face of contemporary Jewish life. “The contributions of Jews in motion pictures is well known today,” says Jo Ann Arnowitz, JMOF-FIU Executive Director and Chief Curator, “however this exhibition sheds light on the industry’s politics during WWII, not only internally, but on a national and global level.” The exhibition begins with the Hollywood studios’ compliance with the Nazis’ control of the motion picture industry in Germany, the ban on Jews from employment within it, and their restrictions on the American distribution of films shown in Germany and throughout Europe. All but two of America’s eight largest studios complied with the 8

Nazis’ restrictions. United Artists closed down its German exchanges rather than fire its Jewish employees, but it did accept German content restrictions and arranged for its films to be shown in Germany through another distributor. Warner Bros., however, was the only studio to withdraw from the German market entirely. As Jewish characters disappeared from American films, Harry Warner and his brothers committed themselves to making anti-Nazi movies to alert the nation to the Nazi threat. The exhibition further documents this time period and how Hollywood studios set up the Motion Pictures Producers and Distributors Association (MPPDA) and established a Production Code of Administration (PCA) that prohibited causing affront to foreign states, including Germany. Thereafter, films required a seal of approval from the MPPDA. At the same time, the PCA worked with the U.S. State Department to ensure that American movies did not violate a series of Neutrality Laws enacted by the Roosevelt administration to keep American citizens safe in European and other war zones. Thus, anti-Nazi screenplays and clearly defined Jewish roles, which would not pass the certification process, were transformed through allegory, character name

changes, and other disguises and glosses by Warner Bros. and other like-minded independent producers. At the end of 1938, the PCA approved Warner Bros. openly anti-Nazi script for Confessions of a Nazi Spy, closely based on the recent historical record of the government’s espionage case. The film was released in early May 1939. With the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 and America’s declaration of war, Hollywood produced patriotic movies, in the guise of “platoon” films, which reflected on the melting pot tradition of American ethnic diversity and helped instill a unified fighting spirit. In addition to Confessions of a Nazi Spy, featured films include Sons of Liberty, Pastor Hall, and The Great Dictator. Also included are posters for World War II espionage and concentration camp escape melodramas set in Germany or another Nazi-occupied country such as To Be or Not To Be, plus films about Nazi Germany’s accountability such as Address Unknown, Tomorrow the World, and Hotel Berlin. Following the war, were the “Exodus” films addressing the attempt by European war refugees to rebuild their

lives and cultures after the Holocaust include My Father’s House, The Illegals, The Search, and Sword in the Desert. Post-war Hollywood films also addressed antisemitism on the home front and the Christian Mobilizers, who blamed the Jews for the war and attacked Jewish citizens, stores, and synagogues in major northeast cities. These films, in which an Italian American or Irish American authority figure condemns antisemitism, stops an assault, or solves a racist murder, include The House I Live In and Crossfire, while Gentleman’s Agreement addresses the related subject of White Anglo Saxon Protestant antisemitism. Exhibition on loan from Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion Museum and is curated by Laura Kruger. Glitz and glamour were there from the start: Sandi was raised in upper class Jewish splendor in New York City and traveled with her father to Havana and Las Vegas. Bugsy Siegel and Lucky Luciano were family. Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby were friends with her father Meyer Lansky, and with Sandi as well. Sandi’s life, however, was not without heartbreak and tragedy. Her brother was cripplingly handicapped and she witnessed firsthand her mother’s downward spiral and struggle with mental illness. There was also the pain and confusion that came with being constantly followed by the FBI, seeing the 12

deaths of her beloved “Uncles” turned into headlines, and watching the government tirelessly hunt down her father. Free and open to the public. RSVP: 786-972-3175 or info@jewishmuseum.com

April

Sunday, March 30, 2014, 5:00 p.m. Film Screening – Imaginary Witness: Hollywood and the Holocaust

Sunday, April 6, 2014, 2:00 p.m. How are Jews Remembered in Morocco?

Imaginary Witness is a 2004 documentary film directed by Daniel Anker and narrated by Gene Hackman that examines the treatment of the Holocaust in Hollywood films over a period of 60 years and the impact of the films on public perception and thinking, and vice versa. It includes scenes from over 40 films and newsreels, and interviews with leading scholars, filmmakers, and Holocaust witnesses, to show how films portrayed Holocaust events, reflected public sentiment, or helped to shape it. It explores the question of how an industry that sells fantasy has dealt with one of the most horrifying episodes in modern world history, but also how the movies themselves reflect America’s everevolving relationship to the events of that era. Among the many films excerpted for the documentary are The Mortal Storm, The Great Dictator, The Diary of Anne Frank, and Schindler’s List. Co-Sponsored by JMOF-FIU and the Galbut Family Miami Beach JCC on the Simkins Family Campus, and Holocaust Memorial Miami Beach. $5 Admission; Free for Members of JMOF-FIU and JCC. RSVP: 786-972-3175 or info@jewishmuseum.com.

For perhaps 2000 years, a small colony of Jews in Cochin, South India, enjoyed security and prosperity, fully accepted by the Hindu, Muslim, and Christian neighbors. In this most exotic corner of the Diaspora Jews flourished, yet when their two homelands attained independence from Britain – India in 1947 and Israel in 1948 – virtually all made aliyah to Israel. Learn their story from Professor Nathan Katz, arguably the preeminent scholar of Indian Jewry. Co-sponsored by the Initiative for Global Jewish Communities and the President Navon Professorship of Sephardi Mizrahi Studies. Free and open to the public. On May 13, 1939, the German transatlantic liner SS St. Louis sailed from Hamburg, Germany, for Havana, Cuba. On the voyage were 937 passengers, almost all Jews fleeing from the Third Reich. Most were German citizens, some were from Eastern Europe, and a few were officially “stateless.” The Cuban government turned away the St. Louis. After being refused safe haven in the United States as well, the ship returned to Europe. Over the years, this voyage has come to symbolize the world’s indifference to the plight of European Jewry on the eve of World War II. Enjoy this informative lecture by Dr. Scott Miller, director of curatorial affairs at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum For ten years, beginning in 1996, Scott Miller and Sarah Ogilvie of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum worked to uncover the fates of all 937 refugees aboard the St. Louis. Dr. Miller’s lecture will discuss their findings. It will be followed by a panel discussion on the Cuban and U.S. political contexts. This event is part of the Latin American Caribbean Center/ Jewish Studies Latin American Jewry Initiative. Co-sponsored by the Cuban Research Institute at FIU. Free and open to the public. RSVP: info@ jewishmuseum.com or 786-972-3175.

Academics

FIU Panthers Experience the Day to Day of Museum Work The Museum is not only a treasured resource for the community, but did you know we have opportunities for students to gain valuable experience, serving as docents and interns in various departments? Currently, two FIU students have become part of the JMOF-FIU family in the Education and Collections Departments.

Graduate Student Samantha Allen is pursuing Master of Arts in History. She connected with JMOF-FIU by way of a scholarship opportunity, offered through FIU’s Global Jewish Communities Initiative. Her assignment includes a weekly shift as a docent at the Museum. An average day as a docent includes welcoming guests and offering tours. After going through the training process and shadowing the Museum’s veteran docents, Samantha started giving tours on her own. “Every tour can be different,” says Samantha, “Sometimes guests are very engaged and desire to discuss aspects of the Jewish experience more in depth.” In this case, Samantha tries to explain the details to the best of her ability. However, in many cases, she ends up learning just as much as the visitors do, because they share their experiences and histories from cities all over the U.S and the countries throughout the world. Samantha is also fluent in Spanish, which is very helpful for guiding our many visitors. Currently, Samantha’s research is not necessarily associated with the Museum’s collection, however, she is writing a report on the legal culture among Jewish settlers in 19th Century Argentina. She has a special interest in this, because her family is from Argentina and she is first generation American. Samantha’s future plans include a career in higher education. Says Samantha, “This has provided me with various helpful experiences, such as public speaking, instructing history to the public, and aspects of museum operations.”

Carmen Ekert has a double Major in History and Biology, with a possible concentration on European History. She has a special interest in this area because her family is from Poland and she lived there when she was younger. Carmen is working as an intern in the Museum’s Collections and Research Department, earning course credit for the Spring 2014 semester. From her experience thus far, she has learned that collections archiving and storage is tedious. “You definitely appreciate the people who scan the documents and the whole process.” Carmen’s assignments include working with the Registrar scanning documents before they are properly stored in the archives and cataloging items in the Museum’s collections database, using key words so they are searchable for research and exhibit purposes. She is also assisting with exhibition installation and de-installations. Carmen, who is a senior, plans to pursue a Masters Degree and eventually a Ph.D. program. She would like to teach and possibly work in museum archives and collections. For more information on JMOF-FIU internships and the Student Docent program, please email: info@jewishmuseum.com

FIU COURSES ARE OFFERED AT THE JEWISH MUSEUM OF FLORIDA-FIU A student can audit a course as a non-degree seeking student with the permission of the instructor teaching the course. To audit a course, students must fill out the Non-degree Seeking Application and the Registration Add/Drop Form. These forms, and the appropriate residency documents, must be submitted during the first week of courses. Tuition and fees for audited courses will be the same as courses taken for credit. All Non-Degree Applicants are assessed a $30.00 application fee upon enrollment. Persons sixty (60) years of age or older by the first day of the semester, who meet Florida residency requirements, may be allowed to enroll without payment of fees for audit grade. Enrollment is on a space available basis and with instructor’s permission. To audit a course using a Senior Citizen Fee Waiver, students must fill out the Non-degree Seeking Application and the Senior Citizen Fee Waiver Form. A staff person will be on-site at the start of the first class session to collect the forms and answer questions.

From a Coin Toss into Politics

September 16, 2014 – March 22, 2015

Coming Soon

From a Coin Toss into Politics: The Life of a Senator September 16, 2014 – March 22, 2015 Senator Richard B. Stone served as Florida’s second and most recent Jewish U.S. Senator (1975-1981). This colorful exhibit, including photographs, classified documents and artifacts, illustrates the Senator’s fascinating story, from growing up on Miami Beach in his family-owned Blackstone Hotel, to the elegant ball gowns worn by his “First Lady” Marlene at White House State dinners, to highlights from his prestigious Ambassadorships in Central America and Denmark. Stone’s foray into 40 years of public service began as Miami City Attorney, however, when a new Florida Senate seat was created in 1967, it was a winning coin toss that solidified his course in the political arena. 24

So What Is The Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU The Jewish Museum of Florida opened in 1995 in a former historic synagogue that housed the first congregation on Miami Beach. Built in 1936, the Henry Hohauser designed building that underwent a two-year restoration, boasts Art Deco features, a copper dome and 80 stained glass windows. In 2007, the museum expanded into the original 1929 synagogue next door after a one-year restoration, now The Jonathan Symons Building. Both buildings are on the National Register of Historic Places. In 2008, the two buildings were connected with a skylighted Bessie’s Bistro. The museum is much more than beautiful buildings. It is a place that presents its own and traveling exhibits, sponsors cultural and educational programs, houses a Collections & Research Center reflecting 250 years of Florida Jewish history, and communicates Jewish history, art, culture and values to Jews and non-Jews alike in an informal mode. The museum is also a place where Jews of all ages and stripes discover and reaffirm their rich heritage – thus helping to strengthen Jewish identity and ensure Jewish continuity. So how did all this get started? You may already know if you are among those who participated in and enjoyed the exhibit MOSAIC: Jewish Life in Florida that traveled to 13 cities (1990-94). Depicting Florida Jewish history from 1763 to the present, this was a statewide grassroots project to collect material evidence from the time Jews were first allowed to live in the Sunshine State. Thousands of photographs, artifacts and oral histories were gathered from families and this collection continues now in the museum, which was created as a result of the interest and support garnered from the original MOSAIC project. Where the traveling exhibit was the launch, the Jewish Museum of Florida further delves into the state’s rich Jewish history of yesterday and today – for the future. Historic Partnership with Florida International University (FIU) Following the approval of the museum’s Board of Directors, Florida International University’s Board of Trustees and the Florida Board of Governors, the museum became part of the FIU family in December 2012. This historic partnership leverages the resources of the museum and FIU, igniting a new era of interdisciplinary education and research focused on the history of the Jewish experience in Florida, the ways in which Florida Jews influence and are influenced by the cultural dynamics of Florida, the nation and the world, and issues of discrimination against all peoples in Florida throughout history. A key component of the partnership is the relocation of a variety of FIU programs, including the Jewish Studies Certificate Program, to the museum’s facilities. The plan also includes the expansion of academic programs and research endeavors designed to educate FIU students, faculty and the greater Florida community about the challenges of the immigrant experiences shared by all ethnicities in the State. Whether your family has lived in Florida for eight generations, as some have, or just arrived – YOUR story is an important tile in the MOSAIC. Join us!
